Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine whether premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) arising from the aortic sinuses of Valsalva (SOV) and great cardiac vein (GCV) have coupling interval (CI) characteristics that differentiate them from other ectopic foci. PVCs occur at relatively fixed CI from the preceding normal QRS complex in most patients. However, we observed patients with PVCs originating in unusual areas (SOV and GCV) in whom the PVC CI was highly variable. We hypothesized that PVCs from these areas occur seemingly randomly because of the lack of electrotonic effects of the surrounding myocardium. Seventy-three consecutive patients referred for PVC ablation were assessed. Twelve consecutive PVC CIs were recorded. The ΔCI (maximum - minimum CI) was measured. We studied 73 patients (age 50 ± 16 years, 47% male). The PVC origin was right ventricular (RV) in 29 (40%), left ventricular (LV) in 17 (23%), SOV in 21 (29%), and GCV in 6 (8%). There was a significant difference between the mean ΔCI of RV/LV PVCs compared with SOV/GCV PVCs (33 ± 15 ms vs. 116 ± 52 ms, p < 0.0001). A ΔCI of > 60 ms demonstrated a sensitivity of 89%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100%, and negative predictive value of 94%. Cardiac events were more common in the SOV/GCV group versus the RV/LV group (7 of 27 [26%] vs. 2 of 46 [4%] , p < 0.02). ΔCI is more pronounced in PVCs originating from the SOV or GCV. A ΔCI of 60 ms helps discriminate the origin of PVCs before diagnostic electrophysiological study and may be associated with increased frequency of cardiac events. Abstract: The microquasar 1E1740.7-2942, also known as the "Great Annihilator," was observed by NuSTAR in the summer of 2012. We have analyzed in detail two observations taken ∼2 weeks apart, for which we measure hard and smooth spectra typical of the low/hard state. A few weeks later the source flux declined significantly. Nearly simultaneous coverage by INTEGRAL is available from its Galactic Center monitoring campaign lasting ∼2.5 months. These data probe the hard state spectrum from 1E1740.7-2942 before the flux decline. We find good agreement between the spectra taken with IBIS/ISGRI and NuSTAR, with the measurements being compatible with a change in flux with no spectral variability. We present a detailed analysis of the NuSTAR spectral and timing data and upper limits for reflection of the high energy emission. We show that the high energy spectrum of this X-ray binary is well described by thermal Comptonization. © 2014. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.

Birth variables were collected by hospital chart review. Descriptive analysis of VSBE response rates and distribution of responses was conducted. An exploratory analysis of the potential association of demographic, birth, clinical, and magnetic resonance image characteristics with VSBE scores was conducted.Main outcome measures: The outcome measure used in this study is VSBE scale.Results: The majority of participants (97%) completed the scale, with responses to most questions skewed toward positive sexual/body esteem, with the exception of sexual enjoyment, where 38% indicated some interference due to genital changes. The scale showed high internal consistency (alpha =0.93). In the exploratory analysis of potential characteristics associated with VSBE, women with episiotomies had lower sexual/body esteem compared to those who did not (median VSBE scores 35 vs 42.5, P=0.01). Anal sphincter tear was not associated with sexual/body esteem (P=0.78). Additional study is indicated to further explore observed trends toward the association of severe levator ani tear, maternal age at childbirth, and forceps with VSBE scores.Conclusion: The VSBE is suitable for use to assess sexual/body esteem in women post childbirth. Most women in this sample did not indicate negative genital body image/sexual esteem. However, some indicated that the changes post birth negatively affected their sexual/body esteem, particularly those who had episiotomies. 5. Molecular taxonomy of Paracoccus halodenitrificans, Aeromonas salmonicida and Enterococcus seriolicida

Abstract: The sequence of the 16S rRNA molecule has become accepted as a systematic fingerprint allowing the evolutionary history of an organism and its phylogenetic status at various taxonomic levels to be characterised. Collection of sequence data and their comparison under explicitly defined and widely, though tentatively, accepted algorithms provides much insight into the relationships between organisms. In the study of microbiology, classical taxonomy has been hindered by a paucity of morphological distinction between bacteria. With the acceptance of molecular systematics, many bacteria and groups of bacteria are now being reorganised into a system that reflects both their histories and their relationships, and is consequently more stable than heretofore. This thesis deals with the classification of three bacteria on the basis of their 16S rRNA sequences. * Paracoccus halodenitrifi cans Various chemotaxonomic and molecular data suggest that this species is generically misplaced. 16S rDNA sequence data place the type species, P. denitrificans, in the a-subclass of the Proteobacteria. 16S rDNA sequence analysis undertaken in this work places P. halodenitrifi cans within the family Halomonadaceae in the g-subclass of the Proteobacteria. * Enterococcus seriolicida A bacterial strain isolated from a Tasmanian salmon farm bears strong resemblance to E. seriolicida (ATCC 49156\$^T\$ = YT-3). In 1993, workers in Spain suggested that E. seriolicida and Lactococcus garvieae are synonymous by 16S rRNA sequence identity, though no sequence data for the former was published. Analysis of the 16S rRNA sequence of E. seriolicida in this work assigns the species to the genus Lactococcus. The sequence of E. seriolicida differs from the published 16S rRNA sequence of L. garvieae in only seven positions. These differences and their significance are discussed. * Aeromonas salmonicida A bacterial strain isolated on a northern Tasmanian fish farm from a skin lesion of the greenback flounder Rhombosolea tapirina was presumed an endemic atypical subspecies of the salmonid pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida. Clarification is necessary for an accurate assessment of its significance for the fishing industry. 16S rRNA sequence of this organism shows 100% identity with that of the species Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. masoucida and achromo genes, despite phenotypic differences between the bacteria. The genus Aeromonas has an unusually high degree of sequence similarity among the 16S rRNA genes of its members. This may make taxonomic clarification by this criterion dubious. The definition of a species on the basis of the sequence of its 16S rRNA molecule has ramifications beyond taxonomy. Synthetic oligonucleotide probes designed to complement specifically unique regions the 16S rRNA or rDNA can rapidly and accurately identify organisms for many purposes. The salmonid industry in Tasmania has been free of the major diseases responsible for devastating losses in overseas fisheries. However, two pathogenic bacteria have been isolated locally, Enterococcus seriolicida and a presumed endemic subspecies of Aeromonas salmonicida. Molecular probes directed against the rDNA of these organisms are required that will allow them to be identified rapidly, their occurrence investigated and their epidemiology traced efficiently should the need arise. A simple diagnostic assay, compatible with normal pathological laboratory routine, is necessary. Therefore these probes have been designed for use as primers in a PCR-based assay.

6. Metallothioneins of the South American opossum, Monodelphis domestica

Abstract: Metallothioneins are small, cysteine-rich, metal-binding proteins which occur ubiquitously throughout the animal kingdom. After several decades of research, a definitive function for these metallothioneins has yet to be clarified. Many metallothioneins have been characterised in the placental mammals (subclass Eutheria) and their occurrence in complex multigene families has been confirmed. Subtle differences in protein structure and expression exist between metallothionein isoforms but it has yet to be established whether the various isoforms play differing roles physiologically. Of the vertebrates, the mammals alone manifest complex MT gene families. The birds, by contrast, express one or rarely two metallothionein genes. The marsupials represent a mammalian subclass (Metatheria) distinct from the placental mammals. Gross differences in reproductive biology distinguish the two groups, but in other respects the marsupials differ only slightly from placental mammals in fundamental physiology. From several perspectives, characterisation of a marsupial MT should extend our understanding of the physiological role and the evolution of the mammalian metallothioneins. Marsupial metallothionein is identified here for the first time. Several independent marsupial MT sequences were isolated from both liver and brain-derived cDNA libraries. The predicted marsupial MT proteins do not conform closely to eutherian isoforms when the traits of cognate proteins are compared, and cannot therefore be accommodated within the current classification system. The tissue-specific expression of the marsupial metallothioneins was investigated to further clarify their relationship to the eutherian metallothioneins. Here too, no confident correlation is possible. The specific and predictable expression profile of MT in the perinatal eutherian was compared with that of the marsupial neonate, which is relatively and strikingly underdeveloped. Marked differences in these profiles were observed. Like the eutherian mammals, the marsupial mammals are here shown to express a complex family of metallothionein genes. Phylogenetic analysis of the vertebrate metallothionein gene family indicates that the amplification of ancestral genes into multiple isoforms occurred independently in both mammalian lineages. It can be inferred that the multiplicity of MT isoforms has arisen not just in response to the physiological requirements that distinguish the mammals, but to some stimulus that acted upon their particular physiology a considerable time after its establishment. Two metallothionein cDNA sequences from the echidna, an Australian monotreme of the mammalian subclass Prototheria, are included in the analysis and confirm these conclusions. It is shown that the mammalian metallothioneins have evolved from an MT3 homologue closely related to bird MT. The eutherian MT1 and MT2 isoforms arose subsequent to the separation of the eutherian and metatherian lineages, approx. 120 myrs ago. The position of the MT4 isoform is less clear but is likely to represent the most ancient of the metallothionein proteins.

7. Discovery of thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts in the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6–0814 observed with NICER and NuSTAR

Swift J1858.6-0814 is a recently discovered X-ray binary notable for extremely strong variability (by factors of >100 in soft X-rays) in its discovery state. We present the detection of five thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts from Swift J1858.6-0814, implying that the compact object in the system is a neutron star (NS). Some of the bursts show photospheric radius expansion, so their peak flux can be used to estimate the distance to the system. The peak luminosity, and hence distance, can depend on several system parameters; for the most likely values, a high inclination and a helium atmosphere, D = 12.8+0.8-0.6kpc, although systematic effects allow a conservative range of 9-18 kpc. Before one burst, we detect a QPO at 9.6 ± 0.5 mHz with a fractional rms amplitude of 2.2 ± 0.2 per cent (0.5-10 keV), likely due to marginally stable burning of helium; similar oscillations may be present before the other bursts but the light curves are not long enough to allow their detection. We also search for burst oscillations but do not detect any, with an upper limit in the best case of 15 per cent fractional amplitude (over 1-8 keV). Finally, we discuss the implications of the NS accretor and this distance on other inferences which have been made about the system. In particular, we find that Swift J1858.6-0814 was observed at super-Eddington luminosities at least during bright flares during the variable stage of its outburst.

Abstract: ABSTRACT We explore a disc origin for the highly blueshifted, variable absorption lines seen in the X-ray spectrum of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224−3809. The blueshift corresponds to a velocity of ∼0.25c. Such features in other active galactic nuclei are often interpreted as ultrafast outflows. The velocity is of course present in the orbital motions of the inner disc. The absorption lines in IRAS 13224−3809 are best seen when the flux is low and the reflection component of the disc is strong relative to the power-law continuum. The spectra are consistent with a model in which the reflection component passes through a thin, highly ionized absorbing layer at the surface of the inner disc, the blueshifted side of which dominates the flux due to relativistic aberration (the disc inclination is about 70°). No fast outflow need occurs beyond the disc.

9. The Soft State of the Black Hole Transient Source MAXI J1820+070: Emission from the Edge of the Plunge Region?

Abstract: The Galactic black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 had a bright outburst in 2018 when it became the second brightest X-ray source in the sky. It was too bright for X-ray CCD instruments such as XMM–Newton and Chandra, but was well observed by photon-counting instruments such as Neutron star Inner Composition Explorer (NICER) and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array(NuSTAR). We report here on the discovery of an excess-emission component during the soft state. It is best modelled with a blackbody spectrum in addition to the regular disc emission, modelled as either diskbb or kerrbb. Its temperature varies from about 0.9 to 1.1 keV, which is about 30–80 per cent higher than the inner disc temperature of diskbb. Its flux varies between 4 and 12 per cent of the disc flux. Simulations of magnetized accretion discs have predicted the possibility of excess emission associated with a non-zero torque at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) about the black hole, which, from other NuSTAR studies, lies at about 5 gravitational radii or about 60 km (for a black hole, mass is $8\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$). In this case, the emitting region at the ISCO has a width varying between 1.3 and 4.6 km and would encompass the start of the plunge region where matter begins to fall freely into the black hole.

10. Radius Constraints from Reflection Modeling of Cygnus X-2 with NuSTAR and NICER

Abstract: We present a spectral analysis of NuSTAR and NICER observations of the luminous, persistently accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-2. The data were divided into different branches that the source traces out on the Z-track of the X-ray color–color diagram; namely, the horizontal branch, the normal branch, and the vertex between the two. The X-ray continuum spectrum was modeled in two different ways that produced comparable quality fits. The spectra showed clear evidence of a reflection component in the form of a broadened Fe K line, as well as a lower-energy emission feature near 1 keV likely due to an ionized plasma located far from the innermost accretion disk. We account for the reflection spectrum with two independent models (RELXILLNS and RDBLUR* RFXCONV). The inferred inclination is in agreement with earlier estimates from optical observations of ellipsoidal lightcurve modeling (RELXILLNS: i = 67° ± 4°; RDBLUR* RFXCONV: i = 60° ± 10°). The inner disk radius remains close to the NS (Rin 1.15 RISCO) regardless of the source position along the Z-track or how the 1 keV feature is modeled. Given the optically determined NS mass of 1.71 ± 0.21 Me, this corresponds to a conservative upper limit of Rin 19.5 km for M = 1.92 Me or Rin 15.3 km for M = 1.5 Me. We compare these radius constraints to those obtained from NS gravitational wave merger events and recent NICER pulsar lightcurve modeling measurements.

Abstract: We present X-ray, UV, optical, and radio observations of the nearby ($\approx78$ Mpc) tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2021ehb/ZTF21aanxhjv during its first 430 days of evolution. AT2021ehb occurs in the nucleus of a galaxy hosting a $\approx 10^{7}\,M_\odot$ black hole ($M_{\rm BH}$ inferred from host galaxy scaling relations). High-cadence Swift and NICER monitoring reveals a delayed X-ray brightening. The spectrum first undergoes a gradual ${\rm soft }\rightarrow{\rm hard}$ transition and then suddenly turns soft again within 3 days at $\delta t\approx 272$ days during which the X-ray flux drops by a factor of ten. In the joint NICER+NuSTAR observation ($\delta t =264$ days, harder state), we observe a prominent non-thermal component up to 30 keV and an extremely broad emission line in the iron K band. The bolometric luminosity of AT2021ehb reaches a maximum of $6.0^{+10.4}_{-3.8}\% L_{\rm Edd}$ when the X-ray spectrum is the hardest. During the dramatic X-ray evolution, no radio emission is detected, the UV/optical luminosity stays relatively constant, and the optical spectra are featureless. We propose the following interpretations: (i) the ${\rm soft }\rightarrow{\rm hard}$ transition may be caused by the gradual formation of a magnetically dominated corona; (ii) hard X-ray photons escape from the system along solid angles with low scattering optical depth ($\sim\,$a few) whereas the UV/optical emission is likely generated by reprocessing materials with much larger column density -- the system is highly aspherical; (iii) the abrupt X-ray flux drop may be triggered by the thermal-viscous instability in the inner accretion flow leading to a much thinner disk., Comment: 35 pages, 21 figures, accepted by ApJ

Abstract: ABSTRACT The Galactic black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 had a bright outburst in 2018 when it became the second brightest X-ray source in the sky. It was too bright for X-ray CCD instruments such as XMM–Newton and Chandra, but was well observed by photon-counting instruments such as Neutron star Inner Composition Explorer (NICER) and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array(NuSTAR). We report here on the discovery of an excess-emission component during the soft state. It is best modelled with a blackbody spectrum in addition to the regular disc emission, modelled as either diskbb or kerrbb. Its temperature varies from about 0.9 to 1.1 keV, which is about 30–80 per cent higher than the inner disc temperature of diskbb. Its flux varies between 4 and 12 per cent of the disc flux. Simulations of magnetized accretion discs have predicted the possibility of excess emission associated with a non-zero torque at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) about the black hole, which, from other NuSTAR studies, lies at about 5 gravitational radii or about 60 km (for a black hole, mass is $8\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$). In this case, the emitting region at the ISCO has a width varying between 1.3 and 4.6 km and would encompass the start of the plunge region where matter begins to fall freely into the black hole.

We report the discovery with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of narrow emission and absorption lines during photospheric radius expansion (PRE) X-ray bursts from the ultracompact binary 4U 1820-30. NICER observed 4U 1820-30 in 2017 August during a low-flux, hard spectral state, accumulating about 60 ks of exposure. Five thermonuclear X-ray bursts were detected, of which four showed clear signs of PRE. We extracted spectra during the PRE phases and fit each to a model that includes a Comptonized component to describe the accretion-driven emission, and a blackbody for the burst thermal radiation. The temperature and spherical emitting radius of the fitted blackbody are used to assess the strength of PRE in each burst. The two strongest PRE bursts (burst pair 1) had blackbody temperatures of ≈0.6 keV and emitting radii of ≈100 km (at a distance of 8.4 kpc). The other two bursts (burst pair 2) had higher temperatures (≈0.67 keV) and smaller radii (≈75 km). All of the PRE bursts show evidence of narrow line emission near 1 keV. By coadding the PRE phase spectra of burst pairs 1 and, separately, 2, we find, in both coadded spectra, significant, narrow, spectral features near 1.0 (emission), 1.7, and 3.0 keV (both in absorption). Remarkably, all the fitted line centroids in the coadded spectrum of burst pair 1 appear systematically blueshifted by a factor of 1.046 ±0.006 compared to the centroids of pair 2, strongly indicative of a gravitational shift, a wind-induced blueshift, or more likely some combination of both effects. The observed shifts are consistent with this scenario in that the stronger PRE bursts in pair 1 reach larger photospheric radii, and thus have weaker gravitational redshifts, and they generate faster outflows, yielding higher blueshifts. We discuss possible elemental identifications for the observed features in the context of recent burst-driven wind models.

Abstract: ABSTRACT We explore a disc origin for the highly blueshifted, variable absorption lines seen in the X-ray spectrum of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224−3809. The blueshift corresponds to a velocity of ∼0.25c. Such features in other active galactic nuclei are often interpreted as ultrafast outflows. The velocity is of course present in the orbital motions of the inner disc. The absorption lines in IRAS 13224−3809 are best seen when the flux is low and the reflection component of the disc is strong relative to the power-law continuum. The spectra are consistent with a model in which the reflection component passes through a thin, highly ionized absorbing layer at the surface of the inner disc, the blueshifted side of which dominates the flux due to relativistic aberration (the disc inclination is about 70°). No fast outflow need occurs beyond the disc.

25. X-ray reflection from the inner disc of the AGN Ton S180

Abstract: We analyse a long archival XMM-Newton observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ton S180, using the latest reflection models to explore the high quality X-ray spectrum. We find that the iron line is relatively narrow and sharp, and the soft excess is extremely smooth. We cannot find an acceptable reflection model that describes both components, and conclude that the soft excess cannot be produced by relativistic reflection. Fitting the 3-10 keV band with relativistic reflection to model the iron line strongly prefers low spin values (< 0.4), with the exact value depending on the model and not well constrained. We then model the broad- band spectrum with a two-component Comptonization continuum plus relativistic reflection. This gives a much better fit than a pure reflection model, which again prefers a low spin value. The photon index of the reflection component is intermediate between the two Comptoniza- tion components, suggesting that both illuminate the disk a similar amount and therefore both contribute to the reflection.

27. Genomic analysis of morphometric traits in bighorn sheep using the Ovine Infinium® HD SNP BeadChip

Abstract: Elucidating the genetic basis of fitness-related traits is a major goal of molecular ecology. Traits subject to sexual selection are particularly interesting, as non-random mate choice should deplete genetic variation and thereby their evolutionary benefits. We examined the genetic basis of three sexually selected morphometric traits in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis): horn length, horn base circumference, and body mass. These traits are of specific concern in bighorn sheep as artificial selection through trophy hunting opposes sexual selection. Specifically, horn size determines trophy status and, in most North American jurisdictions, if an individual can be legally harvested. Using between 7,994-9,552 phenotypic measures from the long-term individual-based study at Ram Mountain (Alberta, Canada), we first showed that all three traits are heritable (h2 = 0.15-0.23). We then conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) utilizing a set of 3,777 SNPs typed in 76 individuals using the Ovine Infinium® HD SNP BeadChip. We found suggestive association for body mass at a single locus (OAR9_91647990). The absence of strong associations with SNPs suggests that the traits are likely polygenic. These results represent a step forward for characterizing the genetic architecture of fitness related traits in sexually dimorphic ungulates.

Abstract: We present a detailed spectral analysis of $\small \textit{XMM-Newton}$ and $\small \textit{NuSTAR}$ observations of the accreting transient black hole GRS 1739−278 during a very faint low hard state at ~0.02% of the Eddington luminosity (for a distance of 8.5 kpc and a mass of 10 $M_\odot$). The broadband X-ray spectrum between 0.5 and 60 keV can be well-described by a power-law continuum with an exponential cutoff. The continuum is unusually hard for such a low luminosity, with a photon index of $\Gamma$ = 1.39 ± 0.04. We find evidence for an additional reflection component from an optically thick accretion disk at the 98% likelihood level. The reflection fraction is low, with $\mathcal{R}_\text{refl}$ = 0.043$^\text{+0.033}_\text{ -0.023}$. In combination with measurements of the spin and inclination parameters made with $\small \textit{NuSTAR}$ during a brighter hard state by Miller et al., we seek to constrain the accretion disk geometry. Depending on the assumed emissivity profile of the accretion disk, we find a truncation radius of 15–35 $R_\text{g}$ (5–12 $R_\text{ISCO}$) at the 90% confidence limit. These values depend strongly on the assumptions and we discuss possible systematic uncertainties., We thank the schedulers and SOC of XMM-Newton and NuSTAR for making these observations possible. 29. Malaria risk: estimating clinical episodes of malaria

Abstract: Estimates of the disease burden caused by malaria are crucial for informing malaria control programmes. Snow and colleagues claim that their estimate of 515 million cases of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum globally is up to 50% higher than that reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), and 200% higher for areas outside Africa. However, this comparison refers to the WHO's estimates from 1990 and 1998, and not to the range of 300 million to 500 million that the WHO has used since 2000 (ref. 2). Both groups agree that the burden of malaria disease outside Africa, especially in South Asia, is greater than was estimated in the 1990s.

Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Abstract: We present an analysis of ionized X-ray disk winds observed in the Fe K band of four stellar-mass black holes observed with Chandra, including 4U 1630-47, GRO J1655-40, H 1743-322, and GRS 1915+105. High-resolution photoionization grids were generated in order to model the data. Third-order gratings spectra were used to resolve complex absorption profiles into atomic effects and multiple velocity components. The Fe XXV line is found to be shaped by contributions from the intercombination line (in absorption), and the Fe XXVI line is detected as a spin-orbit doublet. The data require 2-3 absorption zones, depending on the source. The fastest components have velocities approaching or exceeding 0.01c, increasing mass outflow rates and wind kinetic power by orders of magnitude over prior single-zone models. The first-order spectra require re-emission from the wind, broadened by a degree that is loosely consistent with Keplerian orbital velocities at the photoionization radius. This suggests that disk winds are rotating with the orbital velocity of the underlying disk, and provides a new means of estimating launching radii -- crucial to understanding wind driving mechanisms. Some aspects of the wind velocities and radii correspond well to the broad-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei, suggesting a physical connection. We discuss these results in terms of prevalent models for disk wind production and disk accretion itself, and implications for massive black holes in active galactic nuclei., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: The evolution of galaxies is connected to the growth of supermassive black holes in their centers. During the quasar phase, a huge luminosity is released as matter falls onto the black hole, and radiation-driven winds can transfer most of this energy back to the host galaxy. Over five different epochs, we detected the signatures of a nearly spherical stream of highly ionized gas in the broadband x-ray spectra of the luminous quasar PDS 456. This persistent wind is expelled at relativistic speeds from the inner accretion disk, and its wide aperture suggests an effective coupling with the ambient gas. The outflow's kinetic power larger than 10(46) ergs per second is enough to provide the feedback required by models of black hole and host galaxy coevolution.

Abstract: UNLABELLED: Objective: Patients with diabetes mellitus are at increased risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and its complications. HBV vaccination is recommended for adults with diabetes in the United States and other countries. However, few studies have assessed safety and immunogenicity of hepatitis B vaccine in such patients. We assessed the safety and immunogenicity of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine in subjects with and without diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Prospective, multi-country controlled study in 21 centers ( www.clinicaltrials.gov NCT01627340). Four hundred and sixteen participants with Type-2 diabetes and 258 controls matched for age and body mass index (BMI) (2:1 ratio) received 3-doses of HBV vaccine (Engerix-B™, GSK Vaccines, Belgium) according to a 0, 1, 6 months schedule. Antibodies were measured against HBV surface antigen and expressed as seroprotection rates (anti-HBs ≥10mIU/mL) and geometric mean concentration (GMC). RESULTS: The median age and BMI in patients with diabetes and controls (according-to-protocol cohort) were 54 y and 32.1 kg/m2, and 53 y and 30.8 kg/m2, respectively. Seroprotection rates (GMCs) one month post-dose-3 were 75.4% (147.6 mIU/mL) and 82.0% (384.2 mIU/mL) in patients with diabetes and controls, respectively. Age-stratified seroprotection rates for patients with diabetes were 88.5% (20-39 years), 81.2% (40-49 years), 83.2% (50-59 years), and 58.2% (≥60 years). The overall safety profile of hepatitis B vaccine was similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Hepatitis B vaccine is immunogenic in patients with diabetes and has a similar safety profile to vaccination in healthy controls. Because increasing age was generally associated with a reduction in seroprotection rates, hepatitis B vaccine should be administered as soon as possible after the diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract: Lärm und ototoxische Substanzen wie Aminoglykosid-Antibiotika bewirken einen irreversiblen Hör- und Haarzellverlust. Die Schädigung der sensorischen Zellen beruht auf apoptotischen Mechanismen, die in der Folge eine Degeneration der Spiralganglienzellen (SGZ) induzieren. Studien zeigten, dass sowohl neurotrophe Faktoren (NTF) als auch eine elektrische Stimulation des Auditorischen Nervs (AN) die Vitalität und Regenerationsfähigkeit der SGZ beeinflussen. In dieser Studie wurden Genexpressionsanalysen von Mitgliedern der glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)-Familie, der transforming growth factor-beta (TGFß)-Familie und der nerve growth factor (NGF)-Familie und deren Rezeptoren im Innenohr elektrisch stimulierter Ratten durchgeführt. 5 Tage nach der Ertaubung von Ratten durch Neomycin wurden Platin-Iridium-Elektroden in das Innenohr implantiert und der AN für 21 d stimuliert. Zur Untersuchung des Genexpressionsprofils mittels RT-PCR wurden Colliculus inferior (IC) und Modiolus (Mo) entnommen und deren RNA extrahiert. Zusammengefasst zeigten sich außer für GFRalpha1 keine signikanten Änderungen der mRNA-Expressionslevels im IC infolge der Ertaubung und nach der elektrischen Stimulation. Im Mo jedoch wurde die GDNF-, Artemin (ART), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)- und TGFß2- sowie die trk B-, TGFß1- und -2-Rezeptor-Genexpression signifikant nach der Implantation angehoben. Die Ergebnisse der Expressionsstudien zeigen, daß insbesondere ART, BDNF und GDNF eine große Bedeutung in der Streßantwort nach ototoxischem Trauma und Erhaltung der Funktionsfähigkeit des auditorischen Systems zukommt.

Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final downselection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supranuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1° collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Abstract: A pooled analysis was conducted of 1257 toddlers who received a fourth dose of Haemophilus influenzae type b-Neisseria meningitidis serogroups C and Y-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (HibMenCY-TT) or Hib conjugate vaccine (Hib polysaccharide conjugated to N. meningitidis outer membrane protein) coadministered with measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) and varicella (VAR) vaccines (NCT00134719/NCT00289783). Noninferiority of immunological responses to MMR and VAR was demonstrated between groups and incidences of MMR- and VAR-specific solicited symptoms were similar, indicating that HibMenCY-TT can be coadministered with MMR and VAR.

45. The safety profile of Haemophilus influenzae type b-Neisseria meningitidis serogroups C and Y tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (HibMenCY)

Abstract: The safety profile of HibMenCY was compared with licensed Hib conjugate vaccines in a pooled analysis that included more than 8,500 subjects who were administered a four-dose series of HibMenCY or commercially available Hib vaccines at 2, 4, 6 and 12-15 mo of age in two primary vaccination and two fourth dose phase 3 studies. In all studies, HibMenCY or Hib vaccine was co-administered with age-appropriate, routinely recommended vaccines. In one primary and one fourth dose study (n = 4180), local and general symptoms were solicited using diary cards for 4 d after each dose. Serious adverse events (SAEs) and the occurrence of adverse events (AEs) indicating new onset of chronic disease (NOCD), rash, and conditions prompting Emergency Room (ER) visits were reported from dose 1 until 6 mo after dose 4. The incidences of solicited local and general symptoms were similar following HibMenCY and commercially available Hib vaccines. For some solicited symptoms (pain at the injection site and irritability), rates were lower in the HibMenCY group compared with the Hib control group (p value < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between groups in the incidences of SAEs, NOCDs, rash, or AEs leading to ER visits, with the exceptions of anemia and viral gastroenteritis, which occurred significantly less frequently in those receiving HibMenCY than those receiving commercially available Hib vaccines. In this pooled safety analysis, the safety profile of HibMenCY was similar to the safety profile of licensed monovalent Hib vaccines, despite the addition of meningococcal antigens. 46. Genetic linkage map of a wild genome: genomic structure, recombination and sexual dimorphism in bighorn sheep

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The construction of genetic linkage maps in free-living populations is a promising tool for the study of evolution. However, such maps are rare because it is difficult to develop both wild pedigrees and corresponding sets of molecular markers that are sufficiently large. We took advantage of two long-term field studies of pedigreed individuals and genomic resources originally developed for domestic sheep (Ovis aries) to construct a linkage map for bighorn sheep, Ovis canadensis. We then assessed variability in genomic structure and recombination rates between bighorn sheep populations and sheep species. RESULTS: Bighorn sheep population-specific maps differed slightly in contiguity but were otherwise very similar in terms of genomic structure and recombination rates. The joint analysis of the two pedigrees resulted in a highly contiguous map composed of 247 microsatellite markers distributed along all 26 autosomes and the X chromosome. The map is estimated to cover about 84% of the bighorn sheep genome and contains 240 unique positions spanning a sex-averaged distance of 3051 cM with an average inter-marker distance of 14.3 cM. Marker synteny, order, sex-averaged interval lengths and sex-averaged total map lengths were all very similar between sheep species. However, in contrast to domestic sheep, but consistent with the usual pattern for a placental mammal, recombination rates in bighorn sheep were significantly greater in females than in males (~12% difference), resulting in an autosomal female map of 3166 cM and an autosomal male map of 2831 cM. Despite differing genome-wide patterns of heterochiasmy between the sheep species, sexual dimorphism in recombination rates was correlated between orthologous intervals. CONCLUSIONS: We have developed a first-generation bighorn sheep linkage map that will facilitate future studies of the genetic architecture of trait variation in this species. 47. Sub-Parsec Supermassive Binary Quasars: Expectations at z < 1

Abstract: We investigate the theoretical expectations for detections of supermassive binary black holes that can be identified as sub-parsec luminous quasars. To date, only two candidates have been selected in a sample comprising 17,500 sources selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Catalog at z < 0.70. In this Letter, we use models of assembly and growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in hierarchical cosmologies to study the statistics and observability of binary quasars at sub-parsec separations. Our goal is twofold: (1) to test if such a scarce number of binaries is consistent with theoretical prediction of SMBH merger rates and (2) to provide additional predictions at higher redshifts and at lower flux levels. We determine the cumulative number of expected binaries in a complete volume-limited sample. Motivated by Boroson & Lauer, we apply the SDSS quasar luminosity cut (Mi < -22) to our theoretical sample, deriving an upper limit to the observable binary fraction. We find that sub-parsec quasar binaries are intrinsically rare. Our best models predict ∼0.01 deg-2 sub-parsec binary quasars with separations below 104 Schwarzschild radii (v orb > 2000 kms) at z < 0.7, which represent a fraction ∼6 × 10-4 of unabsorbed quasars in our theoretical sample. In a complete sample of ∼10,000 sources, we therefore predict an upper limit of ∼10 sub-parsec binary quasars. The number of binaries increases rapidly with increasing redshift. The decreasing lifetime with SMBH binary mass suggests that lowering the luminosity threshold does not lead to a significant increase in the number of detectable sub-parsec binary quasars. © 2009.
