We address the challenge of configuring a fiber laser cavity to enable efficient access to multi-pulse structures such as dissipative soliton molecules. We theoretically compare multi-pulsing routes in the parameter space of the laser. Although the temperature of a thermodynamic system is usually believed to be a positive quantity, under particular conditions, negative temperature equilibrium states are also possible. Negative temperature equilibriums have been observed with spin systems, cold atoms in optical lattices and two-dimensional quantum superfluids. Here we report the observation of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization of light waves to negative temperature equilibrium states. The optical wave relaxes to the equilibrium state through its propagation in a multimode optical fiber, i.e., in a conservative Hamiltonian system. The bounded energy spectrum of the optical fiber enables negative temperature equilibriums with high energy levels (high order fiber modes) more populated than low energy levels (low order modes). Our experiments show that negative temperature speckle beams are featured, in average, by a non-monotonous radial intensity profile. The experimental results are in quantitative agreement with the Rayleigh-Jeans theory without free parameters. Bringing negative temperatures to the field of optics opens the door to the investigation of fundamental issues of negative temperature states in a flexible experimental environment., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

The wave turbulence theory predicts that a conservative system of nonlinear waves can exhibit a process of condensation, which originates in the singularity of the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution of classical waves. Considering light propagation in a multimode fiber, we show that light condensation is driven by an energy flow toward the higher-order modes, and a bi-directional redistribution of the wave-action (or power) to the fundamental mode and to higher-order modes. The analysis of the near-field intensity distribution provides experimental evidence of this mechanism. The kinetic equation also shows that the wave-action and energy flows can be inverted through a thermalization toward a negative temperature equilibrium state, in which the high-order modes are more populated than low-order modes. Classical nonlinear random waves can exhibit a process of condensation. It originates in the singularity of the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution and it is characterized by the macroscopic population of the fundamental mode of the system. Several recent experiments revealed a phenomenon of spatial beam cleaning of an optical field that propagates through a graded-index multimode optical fiber (MMF). Our aim in this article is to provide physical insight into the mechanism underlying optical beam self-cleaning through the analysis of wave condensation in the presence of structural disorder inherent to MMFs. We consider experiments of beam cleaning where long pulses are injected in the and populate many modes of a 10-20 m MMF, for which the dominant contribution of disorder originates from polarization random fluctuations (weak disorder). On the basis of the wave turbulence theory, we derive nonequilibrium kinetic equations describing the random waves in a regime where disorder dominates nonlinear effects. The theory reveals that the presence of a conservative weak disorder introduces an effective dissipation in the system, which is shown to inhibit wave condensation in the usual continuous wave turbulence approach. On the other hand, the experiments of beam cleaning are described by a discrete wave turbulence approach, where the effective dissipation induced by disorder modifies the regularization of wave resonances, which leads to an acceleration of condensation that can explain the effect of beam self-cleaning. The simulations are in quantitative agreement with the theory. The analysis also reveals that the effect of beam cleaning is characterized by a repolarization as a natural consequence of the condensation process. The characterization of the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of optical beam propagation in nonlinear multimode fibers requires the development of advanced measurement methods, capable of capturing the real-time evolution of beam images. We present a new space-time mapping technique, permitting the direct detection, with picosecond temporal resolution, of the intensity from repetitive laser pulses over a grid of spatial samples from a magnified image of the output beam. By using this time-resolved mapping, we provide the first unambiguous experimental observation of instantaneous intrapulse nonlinear coupling processes among the modes of a graded index fiber., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Theoretical studies on wave turbulence predict that a purely classical system of random waves can exhibit a process of condensation, in analogy with the quantum Bose-Einstein condensation. We report the experimental observation of the transition to condensation of classical optical waves propagating in a multimode fiber, i.e., in a conservative Hamiltonian system without thermal heat bath. In contrast to conventional self-organization processes featured by the non-equilibrium formation of nonlinear coherent structures (solitons, vortices...), here the self-organization originates in the equilibrium Rayleigh-Jeans statistics of classical waves. The experimental results show that the chemical potential reaches the lowest energy level at the transition to condensation, which leads to the macroscopic population of the fundamental mode of the optical fiber. The near-field and far-field measurements of the condensate fraction across the transition to condensation are in quantitative agreement with the Rayleigh-Jeans theory. The thermodynamics of classical wave condensation reveals that, in opposition to quantum Bose-Einstein condensation, the heat capacity takes a constant value in the condensed state and tends to vanish above the transition in the normal state. We report on the experimental observation of a simultaneous threefold wavelength and spatial conversion process at telecommunication wavelengths taking place in a 6-LP-mode graded-index few-mode fiber. The physical mechanism is based on parallel and phase-matched frequency-degenerated intermodal four-wave mixing (FD-IFWM) phenomena occurring between the fundamental mode and higher-order spatial modes. More precisely, a single high-power frequency-degenerated pump wave is simultaneously injected in the four spatial modes LP01, LP11, LP02 and LP31 of a 1.8-km long graded-index few-mode fiber together with three independent signals in the fundamental mode. By means of three parallel phase-matched FD-IFWM interactions, these initial signals are then simultaneously spatially and frequency converted from the fundamental mode to specific high-order modes. The influence of the differential modal group delay is also investigated and shows that the walk-off between the spatially multiplexed signals significantly limits the bandwidth of the conversion process for telecom applications.

We experimentally demonstrate spatial beam self-cleaning and supercontinuum generation in a tapered Ytterbium-doped multimode optical fiber with parabolic core refractive index and doping profile when 1064 nm pulsed beams propagate from wider (120 micrometers) into smaller (40 micrometers) diameter. In the passive mode, increasing the input beam peak power above 20 kW leads to a bell-shaped output beam profile. In the active configuration, gain from the pump laser diode permits to combine beam self-cleaning with supercontinuum generation between 520-2600 nm. By taper cut-back, we observed that the dissipative landscape i.e., a non-monotonic variation of the average beam power along the MMF leads to modal transitions of self-cleaned beams along the taper length.

We report experimental results, showing that the Kerr beam self-cleaning of many low-order modes in a graded-index multimode fiber can be controlled thanks to optimized wavefront shaping of the coherent excitation beam. Adaptive profiling of the transverse input phase was utilized for channeling the launched power towards a specific low-order fiber mode, by exploiting nonlinear coupling among all guided modes. Experiments were carried out with 7 ps pulses at 1064 nm injected in a five meters long multimode fiber operating in the normal dispersion regime. Optimized Kerr beam self-cleaning of five different LP modes is reported, with a power threshold that increases with the mode order.

We experimentally demonstrate Kerr beam self-cleaning in the anomalous dispersion regime of graded-index multimode optical fibers. By using 90 ps duration, highly chirped (2 nm bandwidth at -3dB) optical pulses at 1562 nm, we demonstrate a 2 decades reduction, with respect to previous experiments in the normal dispersion regime, of threshold peak power for beam self-cleaning into the fundamental mode of the fiber, accompanied by more than 65% nonlinear increase of intensity correlation into the fundamental mode. Highly efficient self-selection of the LP11 mode is also observed. We report the experimental observation of Kerr beam self-cleaning in a graded-index multimode fiber, leading to output beam profiles different from a bell shape, close to the $LP_{01}$ mode. For specific coupling conditions, nonlinear coupling among the guided modes can reshape the output speckle pattern generated by a pulsed beam into the low order $LP_{11}$ mode. This was observed in a few meters long multimode fiber with 750 ps pulses at 1064 nm in the normal dispersion regime. The power threshold for $LP_{11}$ mode self-cleaning was about three times larger than that required for Kerr nonlinear self- cleaning into the $LP_{01}$ mode., Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures

Over the past decade, the rogue wave debate has stimulated the comparison of predictions and observations among different branches of wave physics, particularly between hydrodynamics and optics, in situations where analogous dynamical behaviors can be identified, thanks to the use of common universal models. Although the scalar nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) has constantly played a central role for rogue wave investigations, moving beyond the standard NLSE model is relevant and needful for describing more general classes of physical systems and applications. In this direction, the coupled NLSEs are known to play a pivotal role for the understanding of the complex wave dynamics in hydrodynamics and optics. Benefiting from the advanced technology of high-speed telecommunication-grade components, and relying on a careful design of the nonlinear propagation of orthogonally-polarized optical pump waves in a randomly birefringent telecom fiber, this work explores, both theoretically and experimentally, the rogue wave dynamics governed by such coupled NLSEs. We report, for the first time, the evidence of a group of three dark rogue waves, the so-called dark three-sister rogue waves, where experiments, numerics, and analytics show a very good consistency.

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the process of seeded intermodal four-wave mixing in a graded index multimode fiber, pumped in the normal dispersion regime. By using a fiber with a 100 micron core diameter, we generate a parametric sideband in the C band (1530-1565 nm), hence allowing the use of an Erbium-based laser to seed the mixing process. To limit nonlinear coupling between the pump and the seed to low-order fiber modes, the waist diameter of the pump beam is properly adjusted. We observe that the superimposed seed stimulates the generation of new spectral sidebands. A detailed characterization of the spectral and spatial properties of these sidebands shows good agreement with theoretical predictions from the phase-matching conditions. Interestingly, we demonstrate that both the second and the fourth-order dispersions must be included in the phase matching conditions to get better agreement with experimental measurements. Furthermore, temporal measurements performed with a fast photodiode reveal the generation of multiple pulse structures.

We experimentally study the competition between Kerr beam self-cleaning and Raman beam cleanup in a multimode air-silica microstructure optical fiber. Kerr beam self-cleaning of the pump is observed for a certain range of input powers only. Raman Stokes beam generation and cleanup lead to both depletion and degradation of beam quality for the pump. The interplay of modal four-wave mixing and Raman scattering in the infrared domain lead to the generation of a multimode supercontinuum ranging from 500 nm up to 1800 nm.

We experimentally demonstrate that pumping a graded-index multimode fiber with sub-ns pulses from a microchip Nd:YAG laser leads to spectrally flat supercontinuum generation with a uniform bell-shaped spatial beam profile extending from the visible to the mid-infrared at 2500\,nm. We study the development of the supercontinuum along the multimode fiber by the cut-back method, which permits us to analyze the competition between the Kerr-induced geometric parametric instability and stimulated Raman scattering.
