We perform a systematic comparison between photoelectron momentum distributions computed with the rescattered-quantum orbit strong-field approximation (RQSFA) and the Coulomb-quantum orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA). We exclude direct, hybrid, and multiple scattered CQSFA trajectories, and focus on the contributions of trajectories that undergo a single act of rescattering. For this orbit subset, one may establish a one-to-one correspondence between the RQSFA and CQSFA contributions for backscattered and forward-scattered trajectory pairs. We assess the influence of the Coulomb potential on the ionization and rescattering times of specific trajectory pairs, kinematic constraints determined by rescattering, and quantum interference between specific pairs of trajectories. We analyze how the Coulomb potential alters their ionization and return times, and their interference in photoelectron momentum distributions. We show that Coulomb effects are not significant for high or medium photoelectron energies and shorter orbits, while, for lower momentum ranges or longer electron excursion times in the continuum, the residual Coulomb potential is more important. No, we cannot! The concept of Wigner time delay was introduced in scattering theory to quantify the delay or advance of an incoming particle in its interaction with the scattering potential. It was assumed that this concept can be transferred to ionization considering it as a half scattering process. In the present work we show, by analyzing the corresponding wave packets, that this assumption is incorrect since the wave function of the liberated particle has to satisfy the incoming-wave boundary condition. We show that the electron released in photoionization carries no imprint of the scattering phase and thus cannot be used to determine the Wigner time delay. We illustrate our conclusions by comparing the numerical results obtained using two different methods of extracting the photoelectron spectra in an attoclock experiment., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

Above-threshold ionization spectra from cesium are measured as a function of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) using laser pulses centered at 3.1 $\mu$m wavelength. The directional asymmetry in the energy spectra of backscattered electrons oscillates three times, rather than once, as the CEP is changed from $0$ to $2\pi$. Using the improved strong-field approximation, we show that the unusual behavior arises from the interference of few quantum orbits. We discuss the conditions for observing the high-order CEP dependence, and draw an analogy with time-domain holography with electron wave packets.

Over the last three decades numerous numerical methods for solving the time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation within the single-active electron approximation have been developed for studying ionization of atomic targets exposed to an intense laser field. In addition, various numerical techniques for extracting the photoelectron spectra from the time-dependent wave function have emerged. In this paper we compare photoelectron spectra obtained by either projecting the time-dependent wave function at the end of the laser pulse onto the continuum state having proper incoming boundary condition or by using the window-operator method. Our results for three different atomic targets show that the boundary condition imposed onto the continuum states plays a crucial role for obtaining correct spectra accurate enough to resolve fine details of the interference structures of the photoelectron angular distribution.

The strong-field approximation can be and has been applied in both length gauge and velocity gauge with quantitatively conflicting answers. For ionization of negative ions with a ground state of odd parity, the predictions of the two gauges differ qualitatively: in the envelope of the angular-resolved energy spectrum, dips in one gauge correspond to humps in the other. A new scheme for a double-slit experiment in the time domain is presented. Phase-stabilized few-cycle laser pulses open one to two windows (``slits'') of attosecond duration for photoionization. Fringes in the angle-resolved energy spectrum of varying visibility depending on the degree of which-way information are observed. A situation in which one and the same electron encounters a single and a double slit at the same time is discussed. The investigation of the fringes makes possible interferometry on the attosecond time scale.
