Introduction/Objective. The objectives of the paper are to assess the causes of low vision (LV) in pediatric population in Montenegro and to evaluate the influence of low vision aids (LVA) on reading performance regarding the speed of reading and the understanding of the read text. Methods. A prospective study was conducted on 40 “treatable” LV children what represent all registered LV children in Montenegro. All participants read the same text before and after using LVA. Reading rate was calculated as the number of words read per minute. Functional speed of reading was calculated as the ratio of the rate of reading and the understanding of the read text multiplied by 100. Results. The study comprised 40 LV children with the mean age of 12.60 ± 4.06 years (20 boys and 20 girls). The most common cause of LV in children were premature retinopathy (10/40 or 25%), retinitis pigmentosa (8/40 or 20%), optic nerve anomaly (5/40 or 13%), degenerative myopia (4/40 or 10%), macular dysgenesis (4/40 or 10%), Stargardt disease (3/40 or 7%), optic nerve atrophy (2/40 or 5%), and albinism (2/40 or 5%). Nystagmus was found in 11 LV children or 28% of the group. LVA were prescribed to all of them. Reading speed before vs. after LVA use was 36.58 ± 35.60 vs. 73.83 ± 27.05 words/minute (p < 0.001), while functional reading was 26.00 ± 30.43 vs. 59.41 ± 29.34 (p < 0.001). Conclusion. LV children demonstrate a significant improvement in reading performance by using LVA.

Tributyrin, a prodrug of natural butyrate, has been evaluated with an aim to overcome pharmacokinetic drawbacks of natural butyrate as a drug, i.e., its rapid metabolization and inability to achieve pharmacologic concentrations in neoplastic cells. We studied the effects of tributyrin on growth, differentiation and vitamin D receptor expression in Caco-2 cells, a human colon cancer cell line. Tributyrin was more potent in inhibiting growth and inducing cell differentiation than natural butyrate. The effect was further enhanced after addition of physiologic concentrations of dihydroxycholecalciferol [(OH)2D3]. The synergistic effect of tributyrin and (OH)2D3 in Caco-2 cells was due to tributyrin-induced overexpression of the vitamin D receptor, as measured by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Treatment with tributyrin increased binding of (OH)2D3 to its receptor 1.5-fold, without any change in receptor affinity. We conclude that tributyrin may, at least in part, exert its growth-reducing and differentiation-inducing effect in Caco-2 cells by an upregulation of the vitamin D receptor; this may provide a useful therapeutic approach in chemoprevention and treatment of colorectal cancer by the two nutrients occurring naturally in human diet. Influence of the composition of pyrotechnic mixtures based on organic fuel (ascorbic acid) on the burn rate, heat of combustion and ignition temperature was examined. Results have shown that all of the tested mixtures meet the quality requirements for application as gas generators for Base Bleed projectiles. The composition of the pyrotechnic mixture with the highest values of heat of combustion and burn rate and the lowest ignition temperature is selected as the most suitable for this application.

Background. Amyloidosis represents a group of different diseases characterized by extracellular accumulation of pathologic fibrillar proteins in various tissues and organs. Severe amyloid deposition in the liver parenchyma has extrahepatic involvement predominantly in the kidney or heart. We evaluated the effect of ursodeoxycholic acid, in four patients with severe hepatic amyloidosis of different etiologies, who presented with increased alkaline phosphatase and γ-glutamyl transferase. Case report. The study included four patients who presented with amyloidosis-associated intrahepatic cholestasis. Three of them had renal amyloidosis which developed 1-3 years before cholestasis occurred, the remaining one having intrahepatic cholestasis as the primary sign of the disease. Amyloidosis was identified from liver biopsies in all patients by its specific binding to Congo red and green birefringence in polarized light. The biochemical nature and the class of amyloid deposits were identified immunohistochemically. In addition to their regular treatment, the patients received 750 mg ursodeoxycholic acid per day. After 2-4 weeks all patients had a significant decrease of serum alkaline phosphatase and γ-glutamyl transferase, and their general status significantly improved. Conclusion. Treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid may be beneficial in patients with hepatic amyloidosis, and do extend indications for the use of ursodeoxycholic acid in amyloidotic cholestatic liver disease.
