Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been recommended as a practical surrogate of insulin resistance (IR). However, the association between the TyG index and hyperuricemia among adults with hypertension remains to be elucidated. Methods: We included and analyzed 3134 HTN patients and 4233 non-HTN participants from the cross-sectional 2013–2018 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to explore the association between the TyG index and hyperuricemia. Stratifed analyses were performed to assess the association in populations with different subgroups of hypertension. Results: The prevalence of hyperuricemia was higher in HTN patients (28.00 %) than in non-HTN participants (12.47 %). The multivariable logistic regression showed that the TyG index was significantly associated with hyperuricemia. After multivariable adjustment, higher TyG index levels were found to be associated with a higher prevalence of hyperuricemia in HTN patients (OR: 2.39, 95 % CI: 1.37–4.17, Ptrend 0.05). Radar forward-looking super-resolution imaging is a hot spot in the field of radar imaging research. Restricted by Doppler bandwidth and platform size, traditional high-resolution synthetic aperture imaging and real aperture imaging are not suitable for forward-looking imaging, so a deconvolution-based radar forward-looking super-resolution imaging technology is proposed. The traditional methods currently used in the field of forward-looking deconvolution super-resolution imaging of scanning radar have poor ability to recover the texture details of the target image direction, but simply describe the errors of all measurement data uniformly, which leads to an increase in the result error and have poor ability to adapt to different scenarios. So, this article proposes an improved Tikhonov regularization direction total variation (DTV) deconvolution super-resolution algorithm based on Rayleigh entropy. The algorithm introduces the DTV operator to more accurately restore the edge texture details of the image, and adds a weight matrix to the loss function to more accurately reflect the error degree of each measurement value in the loss function. The entropy enhances the applicability of the algorithm in different scenarios, and significantly improves the radar's ability to recover targets in a low signal-to-noise ratio environment. Finally, the simulation data and measured data processing results show that compared with the traditional method in the field of scanning radar forward looking deconvolution super-resolution imaging, the algorithm proposed in this article is better.

The UNESCO Agenda 2030 emphasizes the preservation of cultural heritage sites, focusing on coastal heritage preservation, which still poses substantial difficulties. While earlier studies have addressed the overall consequences of natural hazards along the Alexandria coastline, there is a gap in how they specifically affect coastal heritage sites, e.g., the Qaitbay citadel (our case study). This work seeks to bridge this gap by assessing the critical hazards faced by the Qaitbay citadel, including crustal deformation due to tectonic events, earthquakes, and Sea Level Rise (SLR) resulting from climate change. To comprehensively assess these challenges, a stack of Sentinel-1 SAR datasets (2017-2021) was processed using the Persistent Scatterer InSAR (PS-InSAR) technique to conduct spatial and temporal deformation variations of the citadel's site and its buildings. GPS measurements of Alexandria's (e.g., ALX2) station were correlated with InSAR results within the same period. Furthermore, satellite altimetry data from 1993–2021 covering the citadel and surroundings were processed to highlight long-term SLR trends. The findings indicate 1) A subsidence rate of $-$1 $\pm$ 0.2 mm/yr, associated with the citadel's foundational structures and identified through the PS-InSAR analysis, was caused by load-bearing effects and sand migration beneath the citadel, 2) a vertical displacement of $-$1.3$\pm$0.6 mm/yr obtained from ALX2-GPS station, consistent with the LOS velocity rate of PS-InSAR time series analysis at that specific location, 3) a SLR trend of +3.96 mm/yr, with notable peaks potentially related to episodes of Northern Ionian Gyre reversal, that could result in changes in water mass redistribution in the surrounding region.

Previous research has found that prolonged eye-based attention can bias ocular dominance. If one eye long-termly views a regular movie meanwhile the opposite eye views a backward movie of the same episode, perceptual ocular dominance will shift towards the eye previously viewing the backward movie. Yet it remains unclear whether the role of eye-based attention in this phenomenon is causal or not. To address this issue, the present study relied on both the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) techniques. We found robust activation of the frontal eye field (FEF) and intraparietal sulcus (IPS) when participants were watching the dichoptic movie while focusing their attention on the regular movie. Interestingly, we found a robust effect of attention-induced ocular dominance shift when the cortical function of vertex or IPS was transiently inhibited by continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS), yet the effect was significantly attenuated to a negligible extent when cTBS was delivered to FEF. A control experiment verified that the attenuation of ocular dominance shift after inhibitory stimulation of FEF was not due to any impact of the cTBS on the binocular rivalry measurement of ocular dominance. These findings suggest that the fronto-parietal attentional network is involved in controlling eye-based attention in the ‘dichoptic-backward-movie’ adaptation paradigm, and in this network, FEF plays a crucial causal role in generating the attention-induced ocular dominance shift.

A high-precision three-dimensional hydrodynamic model based on the Semi-implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model (SCHISM) was constructed to investigate the characteristics of residual currents in the Qiongzhou Strait during spring and summer. Results reveal an overall westward transport in the strait during spring and summer. However, the results also support the potential occurrence of transient eastward Eulerian residual currents, which should be evident predominantly at the surface in the central and eastern sections of the strait and mainly characterised by subtidal oscillations. The direction and intensity of these residual currents indicate a pronounced influence of pressure gradient forces on both sides of the strait. The eastward flow observed in spring may represent a compensatory mechanism resulting from the relaxation period of long-term easterly winds, whereas the generation of eastward residual currents in summer is influenced by wind stress curl differences in both the western and eastern areas of the strait. The direct impact of the summer monsoon on the flow field in the strait is relatively weak. Additionally, the direction and intensity of the residual currents in the strait exhibit potential interannual variations that are directly associated with interannual wind variations. This study provides valuable insights in relation to the ongoing discourse on the dynamics of residual currents in the Qiongzhou Strait.

Abstract During the past decade, cognitive neuroscience has been calling for population diversity to address the challenge of validity and generalizability, ushering in a new era of population neuroscience. The developing Chinese Color Nest Project (devCCNP, 2013–2022), the first ten-year stage of the lifespan CCNP (2013–2032), is a two-stages project focusing on brain-mind development. The project aims to create and share a large-scale, longitudinal and multimodal dataset of typically developing children and adolescents (ages 6.0–17.9 at enrolment) in the Chinese population. The devCCNP houses not only phenotypes measured by demographic, biophysical, psychological and behavioural, cognitive, affective, and ocular-tracking assessments but also neurotypes measured with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain morphometry, resting-state function, naturalistic viewing function and diffusion structure. This Data Descriptor introduces the first data release of devCCNP including a total of 864 visits from 479 participants. Herein, we provided details of the experimental design, sampling strategies, and technical validation of the devCCNP resource. We demonstrate and discuss the potential of a multicohort longitudinal design to depict normative brain growth curves from the perspective of developmental population neuroscience. The devCCNP resource is shared as part of the “Chinese Data-sharing Warehouse for In-vivo Imaging Brain” in the Chinese Color Nest Project (CCNP) – Lifespan Brain-Mind Development Data Community ( https://ccnp.scidb.cn ) at the Science Data Bank.

Abstract Observational studies have identified the potential prognostic value for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) viral load and anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 antibodies in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). However, viral load in nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs produced inconsistent results in prognostic analyses, and the prognostic value of viral load or antibodies has not been confirmed in large clinical trials. COVACTA and REMDACTA were double‐blind, randomized, controlled trials with a combined enrollment of 1078 patients hospitalized with COVID‐19 treated with tocilizumab or placebo in COVACTA or tocilizumab plus remdesivir or placebo plus remdesivir in REMDACTA. We assessed the potential prognostic value of NP and serum SARS‐CoV‐2 viral load and serum anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 antibodies at baseline as biomarkers for clinical outcomes in patients enrolled in these trials. In adjusted Cox proportional hazard models, serum viral load was a more reliable predictor of clinical outcomes than NP viral load; high serum viral load was associated with higher risk for death and mechanical ventilation/death and lower likelihood of hospital discharge (high vs. negative viral load hazard ratios [95% confidence interval {CI}] were 2.87 [1.57–5.25], 3.86 [2.23–6.68], and 0.23 [0.14–0.36], respectively, in COVACTA and 8.11 [2.95–22.26], 10.29 [4.5–23.55], and 0.21 [0.15–0.29], respectively, in REMDACTA) and high serum viral load correlated with levels of inflammatory cytokines and lung damage biomarkers. High anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein antibody (ACOV2S) levels were associated with higher likelihood of hospital discharge (high vs. below the limit of quantification hazard ratios [95% CI] were 2.55 [1.59–4.08] for COVACTA and 1.54 [1.13–2.09] for REMDACTA). These results support the role of baseline SARS‐CoV‐2 serum viral load and ACOV2S antibody titers in predicting clinical outcomes for patients hospitalized with COVID‐19.

Internal migrants with chronic diseases (IMCDs) are a specific subgroup of the internal migrants, but few studies have focused on health service utilization among this group. Social integration is an essential element in the maintenance of health and well-being in migrants. However, the measurement of social integration remains inconsistent. This study aimed to measure social integration more comprehensively and evaluate the association between social integration and National Basic Public Health Services (NBPHS) utilization among IMCDs in China, thereby providing theoretical support for health promotion among IMCDs. The data of this study were obtained from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) in 2017. A total of 9272 internal migrants who self-reported hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes were included in the analysis. Four factors were extracted through exploratory factor analysis to measure the social integration of IMCDs: psychological identity, community involvement, social security, and sociocultural adaptation. The results show the IMCDs underutilized NBPHS, with 26.80 % stating that they have not used any of the services in the NBPHS. We confirmed the positive association between social integration and NBPHS use among IMCDs. The social integration of IMCDs in developed regions was relatively worse than in developing regions, further exacerbating the underutilization of NBPHS in developed regions. Therefore, targeted government measures and supportive policies are necessary, especially in developed regions, to encourage IMCDs to participate in social organizations and community activities and stimulate their active participation in the NBPHS.

IntroductionModeling work on binocular rivalry has described how ocular opponency neurons represent interocular conflict. These neurons have recently been considered to mediate an ocular dominance shift to the eye that has viewed a backward movie for long during which time the other eye is presented with a regular movie. Unlike typical short-term monocular deprivation, the visual inputs are comparable across eyes in that “dichoptic-backward-movie” paradigm. Therefore, it remains unclear whether the ocular opponency neurons are also responsible for the short-term monocular deprivation effect which is prevalently explained by the homeostatic compensation theory. We designed two experiments from distinct perspectives to investigate this question.MethodsIn Experiment 1, we mitigated the imbalance in the activity of opponency neurons between the two eyes during monocular deprivation by presenting video stimuli alternately. In Experiment 2, we directly evaluated the response of opponency neurons before and after monocular deprivation using SSVEP techniques.ResultsConsistent with each other, both experiments failed to provide reliable evidence supporting the involvement of ocular opponency neurons in the short-term monocular deprivation effect.DiscussionOur results suggest that ocular opponency neurons may not play an essential role in the short-term monocular deprivation effect, potentially due to interference from the homeostatic plasticity mechanism.

Objectives Early identification of fracture risk in patients with osteoporosis is essential. Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a promising technique to predict the risk, whereas its predictive performance remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the predictive efficiency of ML for the risk of fracture in patients with osteoporosis.Methods Relevant studies were retrieved from four databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science) until 31 May 2023. A meta-analysis of the C-index was performed using a random-effects model, while a bivariate mixed-effects model was used for the meta-analysis of sensitivity and specificity. In addition, subgroup analysis was performed according to the types of ML models and fracture sites.Results Fifty-three studies were included in our meta-analysis, involving 15 209 268 patients, 86 prediction models specifically developed for the osteoporosis population and 41 validation sets. The most commonly used predictors in these models encompassed age, BMI, past fracture history, bone mineral density T-score, history of falls, BMD, radiomics data, weight, height, gender and other chronic diseases. Overall, the pooled C-index of ML was 0.75 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.78) and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.71, 0.78) in the training set and validation set, respectively; the pooled sensitivity was 0.79 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.84) and 0.76 (95% CI: 0.80, 0.81) in the training set and validation set, respectively; and the pooled specificity was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.75, 0.86) and 0.83 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.90) in the training set and validation set, respectively.Conclusions ML has a favourable predictive performance for fracture risk in patients with osteoporosis. However, most current studies lack external validation. Thus, external validation is required to verify the reliability of ML models.PROSPERO registration number CRD42022346896.

ObjectiveTo evaluate whether the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) can serve as a predictive factor for inpatient outcomes in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) patients.MethodsA retrospective cohort study was conducted on 59 CDH patients at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics from January 2020 to August 2022. Echocardiography was performed at least three times: within 2–3 h after birth, pre-operatively, and post-operatively of CDH surgery. Based on the direction of the PDA shunt in the first echocardiogram, patients were classified into three groups: left-to-right shunting or closed PDA (L-R), bi-directional shunting, and right-to-left shunting (R-L).ResultsThe mortality rate was 15.3% (9/59), with all non-survivors having R-L shunting and group mortality of 39.1% (9/23). Summary: Altered myeloid inflammation and lymphopenia are hallmarks of severe infections. We identified the upregulated EN-RAGE gene program in airway and blood myeloid cells from patients with acute lung injury from SARS-CoV-2 or other causes across 7 cohorts. This program was associated with greater clinical severity and predicted future mechanical ventilation and death. EN-RAGEhi myeloid cells express features consistent with suppressor cell functionality, including low HLA-DR and high PD-L1. Sustained EN-RAGE program expression in airway and blood myeloid cells correlated with clinical severity and increasing expression of T cell dysfunction markers. IL-6 upregulated many EN-RAGE program genes in monocytes in vitro. IL-6 signaling blockade by tocilizumab in a placebo-controlled clinical trial led to rapid normalization of EN-RAGE and T cell gene expression. This identifies IL-6 as a key driver of myeloid dysregulation associated with worse clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients and provides insights into shared pathophysiological mechanisms in non-COVID-19 ARDS.

Osteoporosis is a prevalent chronic disease that often goes unnoticed in postmenopausal women. Early identification of risk factors for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women is essential. This study aimed to develop predictive models for osteoporosis-related factors among postmenopausal women in the U.S. and explore the influencing factors. In this cross-sectional study, we included 4417 postmenopausal women from the NHANES (2009–2010, 2013–2014, and 2017–2020). Through multiple regression analysis, we found that age, minutes of sedentary activity, prednisone or cortisone usage, arthritis, bone loss around teeth, and trouble sleeping were risk factors for osteoporosis after menopause. Conversely, height, BMI, and age at the last menstrual period were identified as protective factors. The findings from the Bayesian network analysis indicated that several factors influenced osteoporosis, including age, BMI, bone loss around teeth, prednisone or cortisone usage, arthritis, and age at the last menstrual period. On the other hand, minutes of sedentary activity and height might have indirect effects, while trouble sleeping may not have a significant impact. Both logistic regression and Bayesian network models demonstrated good predictive capabilities in predicting osteoporosis among postmenopausal women. In addition, Bayesian networks offer a more intuitive depiction of the intricate network risk mechanism between diseases and factors.

Summary: High interleukin (IL)-6 levels are associated with greater COVID-19 severity. IL-6 receptor blockade by tocilizumab (anti-IL6R; Actemra) is used globally for the treatment of severe COVID-19, yet a molecular understanding of the therapeutic benefit remains unclear. We characterized the immune profile and identified cellular and molecular pathways modified by tocilizumab in peripheral blood samples from patients enrolled in the COVACTA study, a phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the efficacy and safety of tocilizumab in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19. We identified markers of inflammation, lymphopenia, myeloid dysregulation, and organ injury that predict disease severity and clinical outcomes. Proteomic analysis confirmed a pharmacodynamic effect for tocilizumab and identified novel pharmacodynamic biomarkers. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that tocilizumab treatment leads to faster resolution of lymphopenia and myeloid dysregulation associated with severe COVID-19, indicating greater anti-inflammatory activity relative to placebo and potentially leading to faster recovery in patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Using integral field spectroscopic data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey, we investigate the spatially resolved properties and empirical relations of a star-forming galaxy and a non-star-forming galaxy hosting counterrotating stellar disks (CRDs). The DESI g , r , z color images reveal no evidence of merger remnants in either galaxy, suggesting that gas accretion fuels the formation of CRDs. Based on the visible counterrotation in the stellar velocity field, we can fit a spatial boundary to distinguish the inner and outer regions dominated by two stellar disks in each galaxy. In the inner region of the star-forming CRDs, stars are corotating with ionized gas, and the stellar population is younger. Comparison of the star-forming main-sequence relations between the inner and outer regions reveals enhanced star formation in the inner region. Given the abundant preexisting gas in the star-forming galaxy, collisions between preexisting and external gas efficiently consume angular momentum, triggering star formation in the inner region. Conversely, in the outer region of the non-star-forming CRDs, stars are corotating with ionized gas, and the stellar population is younger. Comparison of the stellar mass–metallicity relations between the inner and outer regions indicates enriched gas-phase metallicity in the outer region. Considering the less abundant preexisting gas in the non-star-forming galaxy, external gas could preserve angular momentum, fueling star formation in the outer region. Overall, gas accretion exhibits different influences on the evolution of star-forming and non-star-forming galaxies.

Background: A goal of 10,000 steps per day is widely advocated, but there is little evidence to support that goal. Our purpose was to examine the dose–response relationships between step count and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease risk. Methods: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, OVID, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for studies published before July 9, 2021, that evaluated the association between daily steps and at least 1 outcome. Results: Sixteen publications (12 related to all-cause mortality, 5 related to cardiovascular disease; and 1 article contained 2 outcomes: both all-cause death and cardiovascular events) were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. There was evidence of a nonlinear dose–response relationship between step count and risk of all-cause mortality or cardiovascular disease (p = 0.002 and p = 0.014 for nonlinearity, respectively). When we restricted the analyses to accelerometer-based studies, the third quartile had a 40.36% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 35.05% lower risk of cardiovascular event than the first quartile (all-cause mortality: Q1 = 4183 steps/day, Q3 = 8959 steps/day; cardiovascular event: Q1 = 3500 steps/day, Q3 = 9500 steps/day; respectively). Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggests inverse associations between higher step count and risk of premature death and cardiovascular events in middle-aged and older adults, with nonlinear dose–response patterns.

Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is a kind of multi-factor mediated diseases, currently accepted DR environment that is caused by chronic high blood glucose metabolic abnormalities caused by, but it is regulated by the genetic factors, is considered to be a classic case of complex diseases, can be attributed to genetic factors, environmental factors and the interaction of the results. Genetic studies on the occurrence and development of DR have achieved some results, but the specific pathogenic genes and their pathogenesis are still not clear. In this study, potential DR susceptibility genes and their polymorphisms have been identified so far, so as to provide reference for further study of DR pathogenic genes and their pathogenesis.

Due to the independence of azimuth invariance and high implementing efficiency, a fast time-domain algorithm has significant advantages for airborne bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) data process with general geometric configuration. In this article, the practical problem of unexpected motion errors of the airborne platform is carefully analyzed under a fast factorized back-projection (FFBP) framework for a general BiSAR process and a coherent data-driven motion compensation (MOCO) algorithm integrated with FFBP is proposed. By utilizing wavenumber decomposition, the analytical spectrum of a polar grid image is obtained where the motion error can be conveniently investigated in image spectrum domain and the coherence between azimuthal phase error (APE) and motion-induced nonsystematic range cell migration (NsRCM) can be perfectly revealed. Then, a new data-driven MOCO method for both APE and NsRCM correction is developed with the FFBP process. Different from the data-driven MOCO in most frequency-domain algorithms, the residual NsRCM introduced by the FFBP process is particularly analyzed and addressed in the MOCO, which significantly improves the image quality in focusing. Promising results from both simulation and raw data experiments are presented and analyzed to validate the advantages of the proposed algorithm for the airborne BiSAR process.

Summary: Background: In COVACTA, a randomised, placebo-controlled trial in patients hospitalised with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), tocilizumab did not improve 28-day mortality, but shortened hospital and intensive care unit stay. Longer-term effects of tocilizumab in patients with COVID-19 are unknown. Therefore, the efficacy and safety of tocilizumab in COVID-19 beyond day 28 and its impact on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) clearance and antibody response in COVACTA were investigated. Methods: Adults in Europe and North America hospitalised with COVID-19 (N = 452) between April 3, 2020 and May 28, 2020 were randomly assigned (2:1) to double-blind intravenous tocilizumab or placebo and assessed for efficacy and safety through day 60. Assessments included mortality, time to hospital discharge, SARS-CoV-2 viral load in nasopharyngeal swab and serum samples, and neutralising anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in serum. ClinicalTrials.gov registration: NCT04320615. Findings: By day 60, 24·5% (72/294) of patients in the tocilizumab arm and 25·0% (36/144) in the placebo arm died (weighted difference –0·5% [95% CI –9·1 to 8·0]), and 67·0% (197/294) in the tocilizumab arm and 63·9% (92/144) in the placebo arm were discharged from the hospital. Serious infections occurred in 24·1% (71/295) of patients in the tocilizumab arm and 29·4% (42/143) in the placebo arm. Median time to negative reverse transcriptase–quantitative polymerase chain reaction result in nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal samples was 15·0 days (95% CI 14·0 to 21·0) in the tocilizumab arm and 21·0 days (95% CI 14·0 to 28·0) in the placebo arm. All tested patients had positive test results for neutralising anti–SARS-CoV-2 antibodies at day 60. Interpretation: There was no mortality benefit with tocilizumab through day 60. Tocilizumab did not impair viral clearance or host immune response, and no new safety signals were observed. Future investigations may explore potential biomarkers to optimize patient selection for tocilizumab treatment and combination therapy with other treatments. Funding: F. AbstractRock slopes with intermittent joints in open-pit mines are complex geological bodies composed of intact rock and discontinuous structural planes, and their stability analysis are necessary for mine disaster prevention. In this study, a series of base friction tests were performed to determine the failure process and displacement field evolution of rock slopes with intermittent joints using the speckle technique of a noncontact measurement system. Next, stability calculation models of the slopes were established from the energy perspective using the plastic limit analysis theory, and the effects of the joint inclination angle and coalescence coefficient of rock bridges on the slope stability were evaluated. The four main conclusions are as follows: (1) The failure of rock slopes with intermittent joints shows the feature of collapse-lower traction-upper push. (2) Based on the failure modes of rock bridges in slopes, the failure of rock slopes with intermittent joints could be divided into three types: tensile coalescence (type A), shear coalescence (type B), and tensile–shear coalescence (type C). (3) Among the three slope types, the stability of the type A slope is significantly influenced by rock cohesion, whereas that of the type B slope is significantly influenced by joint cohesion. The stability of type C slope is significantly influenced by the joint inclination angle and joint friction angle. (4) The local-stable slope is unstable while the first through-tensile crack in the zone of the potential sliding body higher than the critical instability height appeared. This study guides the stability evaluation and instability prediction of jointed rock slopes in open-pit mines.

To protect vulnerable trees from native and invasive wood wasps, the mating behavior of these two woodwasp species (S. noctilio and S. nitobei, respectively) and factors influencing this behavior were investigated in cages outdoors. Male-produced pheromones were identified in both woodwasp species. Compared with the native species S. nitobei, the invasive species S. noctilio showed stronger mating ability, including mating frequency, time, and duration. The mating behavior of both species mainly occurred from 9:00 to 17:00 each day, peaking at 11:00 and 12:00. The daily mating behavior of both species was most directly related to light intensity. Both female and male S. noctilio and S. nitobei were capable of mating upon emergence, and most individuals mated at 2 days of age. For both species, a female-to-male ratio of 5:15 was most conducive to mating, and individuals with a larger body size were preferred as mates by males and females. (Z)-3-decenol was present in solid-phase microextraction extracts of both species. Two reported minor reference components, (Z)-4-decen-1-ol and (E, E)-2,4-decadienal, were not identified in either woodwasp species. The peak of male pheromone release occurred from 11:00–12:00 for 2-day-old individuals.

There are a large number of non-penetrating collinear cracks in the rock slope of an open-pit mine. The timeliness of cracks in the rock mass is a problem that cannot be ignored in terms of slope engineering safety. Based on the superposition principle and fracture mechanics, the stress intensity factor of the rock mass crack tip with collinear fractures under biaxial compression was calculated in this study. A mechanical model of rock mass crack propagation with collinear fractures under constant load was established according to the Charles equation. The effects of loading time, crack penetration rate, and crack dip angle on crack propagation along the direction of the rock bridge were analyzed theoretically. The variations in crack propagation with time in the rock mass were examined using a LS-DYNA creep numerical model. The results show that the fracture growth rate changes in three stages over time, progressing through a stable stage, a decreasing stage, and an abrupt stage. A higher crack penetration rate and a larger crack inclination angle cause a higher rock bridge penetration rate in the rock mass. When the crack penetration rate exceeds 74% or the fracture inclination angle is about 60°, the crack expansion directly enters the abrupt stage, and the rock bridge is penetrated. The theoretical analysis results are in close agreement with the numerical results of this work, which validates the proposed age expansion mechanical model for rock masses with non-penetrating collinear fractures.

Due to their location, malignant brain tumors are one of humanity's greatest killers, among these tumors, gliomas are the most common. The early detection of gliomas can contribute to the design of proper treatment schemes and, thus, improve the survival rate of patients. However, it is a challenging task to detect the gliomas within the complex structure of the brain. The conventional artificial diagnosis is time-consuming and relies on the clinical experience of radiologists. To detect gliomas more efficiently, this paper proposes a noninvasive automatic diagnosis system for gliomas based on the machine learning methods. First, image standardization, including size normalization and background removal, is applied to produce standard images; then, the modified dynamic histogram equalization is implemented to enhance the low-contrast standard brain images, and skull removal based on outlier detection is presented. Furthermore, hybrid features, including gray-level co-occurrence matrix, pyramid histogram of the oriented gradient, modified completed local binary pattern, and intensity-based features are extracted together from the enhanced images, and their dimensions are reduced by principal component analysis. Kernel support vector machine (KSVM) combined with the particle swarm optimization is eventually adopted to train classifiers; in this paper, brain magnetic resonance imaging images are labeled with normal, glioma, and other. The experimental results show that the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the proposed method can reach 98.36%, 99.17%, and 97.83%, respectively, which indicates that the proposed method performs better than many current systems.

In this paper, a parallelogram set-membership estimation (PSME) algorithm is proposed to perform osteotomy trajectory estimation in two dimension plane with high accuracy to achieve high-precision osteotomy by an orthopedic surgery robot and meet the safety requirements of the osteotomy. First, to realize the tight envelope of the estimated set on the osteotomy trajectory, a parallelogram envelopment expression is proposed that describes the state set and the observation set. Second, a minimum-area parallelogram envelope method is applied to quickly converge the osteotomy trajectory estimation set to a reliable range. Moreover, the unknown but bounded noise model solves the robustness problem of the algorithm under non-Gaussian conditions, and realizes the accurate estimation of the osteotomy trajectory in any noise environment. Finally, the simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the estimation accuracy and anti-noise performance of the PSME algorithm are better than other estimation algorithms. In the osteotomy experiment, the average osteotomy error is less than 1 mm, which meets the safety requirements of the osteotomy. Furthermore, PSME holds great potential in other estimation problems.

The arterial mechanical microenvironment, including stiffness, is a crucial pathophysiological feature of vascular remodeling, such as neointimal hyperplasia after carotid endarterectomy and balloon dilatation surgeries. In this study, we examined changes in neointimal stiffness in a Sprague-Dawley rat carotid artery intimal injury model and revealed that extracellular matrix (ECM) secretion and vascular stiffness were increased. Once the endothelial layer is damaged in vivo, activated platelets adhere to the intima and may secrete platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (pEVs) and communicate with vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). In vitro, pEVs stimulated VSMCs to promote collagen secretion and cell adhesion. MRNA sequencing analysis of a carotid artery intimal injury model showed that ECM factors, including col8a1, col8a2, col12a1, and elastin, were upregulated. Subsequently, ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) was used to examine the possible signaling pathways involved in the formation of ECM, of which the Akt pathway played a central role. In vitro, pEVs activated Akt signaling through the PIP3 pathway and induced the production of Col8a1. MicroRNA (miR) sequencing of pEVs released from activated platelets revealed that 14 of the top 30 miRs in pEVs targeted PTEN, which could promote the activation of the Akt pathway. Further research showed that the most abundant miR targeting PTEN was miR-92a-3p, which promoted Col8a1 expression. Interestingly, knockdown of Col8a1 expression in vivo abrogated the increase in carotid artery stiffness and simultaneously increased the degree of neointimal hyperplasia. Our results revealed that pEVs may deliver miR-92a-3p to VSMCs to induce the production and secretion of Col8a1 via the PTEN/PIP3/Akt pathway, subsequently increasing vascular stiffness. Therefore, pEVs and key molecules may be potential therapeutic targets for treating neointimal hyperplasia.

Adaptation can optimize information processing by allowing the visual system to always adjust to the environment. However, only a few studies have investigated how the visual system makes adjustments to repeatedly occurring changes in the input, still less about the related neural mechanism. Our previous study found that contrast adaptation attenuated after multiple daily sessions of repeated adaptation, which was explained by the habituation of either the adapter’s effective strength or the adaptation mechanisms. To examine the former hypothesis, in the present study we used the frequency tagging technique to measure the adapter-elicited steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) amplitudes. Participants repeatedly adapted to the same contrast adapter in a top-up manner for six continuous days, which was called training of adaptation. The behavioral adaptation effect and SSVEP response to the trained adapter and an untrained control adapter were measured before and after training. The psychophysical results showed that the effect of adaptation in the trained condition significantly reduced after training, replicating our previous finding. Contradicting the prediction of the hypothesis that repeated adaptation attenuated the effective strength of the adapter, the SSVEP amplitude was unchanged after training, which was further confirmed by an equivalence test. Taken together, the results challenge the account of habituation of adapter in repeated adaptation, while leaving the account of habituation of adaptation mechanism to be tested.

Little is known about how geometric cues affect cell function and gene expression in 3D settings. Here the authors use microniches of different geometries to control cell volume and shape, and by extension cell phenotype and lineage.

Moving ship refocusing is challenging because the target motion parameters are unknown. Moreover, moving ships in squint synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images obtained by the back-projection (BP) algorithm usually suffer from geometric deformation and spectrum winding. Therefore, a spectrum-orthogonalization algorithm that refocuses moving ships in squint SAR images is presented. First, “squint minimization” is introduced to correct the spectrum by two spectrum compression functions: one to align the spectrum centers and another to translate the inclined spectrum into orthogonalized form. Then, the precise analytic function of the two-dimensional (2D) wavenumber spectrum is derived to obtain the phase error. Finally, motion compensation is performed in the two-dimensional wavenumber domain after the motion parameter is estimated by maximizing the image sharpness. This method has low computational complexity because it lacks interpolation and can be implemented by the inverse fast Fourier translation (IFFT) and fast Fourier translation (FFT). Processing results of simulation experiments and the GaoFen-3 squint SAR data validate the effectiveness of this method.

Background: Ebstein's anomaly (EA) has various spectrums in clinical and anatomic features. This study aimed to report the experience of two-dimensional intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (2D-ITEE) during the EA surgery and to analyze the characteristics of the tricuspid valve (TV) by comparing the data from 2D-ITEE with the results from the surgery. Methods: 2D-ITEE data of 164 patients with EA who were operated in the First Hospital of Tsinghua University between July 2004 and April 2014 were retrospectively analyzed in this study. 2D-ITEE was applied in all patients. Downward displacement distances were measured, and the numbers of downward displacement or absent leaflets were compared with that of the surgery and with that of the two-dimensional-transthoracic echocardiogram (2D-TTE). Data comparison was performed using the Chi-square test. Results: The anterior leaflet partial or total downward displacement was 37.76 ± 17.50 mm in 54 cases, absent in one patient; septal leaflet downward displacement was 29.07 ± 12.34 mm in 134 cases, absent in 17 cases; and posterior leaflet downward displacement was 43.18 ± 19.16 mm in 115 cases, absent in 34 cases. Statistically, there was no significant difference between the results from 2D-ITEE and that of 2D-TTE. The consistency rates of 2D-ITEE with operation for septal and posterior leaflets were 93.2% and 96.1%, respectively, while the rate for anterior was only 40.1%, which was significantly different. Color Doppler flow image showed severe regurgitation in 150 cases and moderate in 14 cases. After surgical correction, moderate regurgitation of TV was found in 58 cases with 2D-ITEE, repair was performed again until the effect was satisfied. No complication occurred relating to the use of 2D-ITEE. Conclusions: 2D-ITEE could help diagnose anterior leaflet, evaluate the effect of TV repair, increase operational success rate, and reduce complication.

Haemonchus contortus is one of the most important parasitic nematodes of small ruminants around the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The control of haemonchosis relies mainly on anthelmintics, but the excessive and prolonged use of anthelmintics is causing serious drug resistance issues in many countries. As benzimidazole (BZ) anthelmintics have been broadly used in China, we hypothesized that resistance is widespread. Given the link between three known single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs, designated F167Y, E198A and F200Y) in the isotype-1 β-tubulin gene and BZ resistance, our goal here was to explore the presence of these mutations in H. contortus from small ruminants (sheep and goats) from eight provinces in China using PCR-coupled sequencing. In addition, the genetic diversity and genetic relationship of isotype-1 β-tubulin sequence haplotypes were also investigated. Among 192 H. contortus adult individuals representing the eight populations, we identified six distinct sequence types, five of which had SNP E198A (GCA) and/or F200Y (TAC). Sequence analysis showed that the frequencies of SNPs E198A and F200Y were 0–70% and 0–31%, respectively. SNP F167Y (TAC) was not detected in any population. In addition, high haplotype diversities (0.455–0.939) and nucleotide diversities (0.018–0.039) were calculated. A network analysis of the isotype-1 β-tubulin gene sequences showed that SNPs E198A and F200Y occurred in multiple distinct groupings, suggesting multiple independent origins of these SNPs. The findings of this first study of SNPs in the isotype-1 β-tubulin gene of H. contortus populations suggest that BZ resistance is prevalent in some regions of China, and that any control strategy might focus on monitoring BZ resistance in this country.

Background Pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma (PSH) is a rare tumor that usually develops in middle-aged Asian women. PSH has four histological types (hemorrhagic, sclerotic, solid, and papillary) and often grows slowly in a lower lobe of the lung. Preoperative misdiagnosis frequently occurs because of the absence of specific clinical manifestations and imaging findings. Few reports have described PSH in women of advanced age. Case presentation: A 75-year-old woman presented to our hospital in China with a 5-day history of productive cough and intermittent hemoptysis. Computed tomography indicated bronchiectasis and a large mass in the left inferior lobe of the lung. Treatment of the bronchiectasis provided no symptom relief. The hemoptysis resolved following left lower pulmonary lobectomy, and PSH was pathologically diagnosed following surgery. At the time of this writing (after 6 months of follow-up), the tumor had not recurred, no metastases had been detected, and close follow-up was ongoing. Conclusions Both bronchiectasis and PSH can cause hemoptysis. This case demonstrates that PSH should be included as a differential diagnosis of hemoptysis in women of advanced age. For patients with chronic hemoptysis, the diagnosis of PSH should be considered if the therapeutic effect of bronchiectasis is poor.

Due to the independence of azimuth-invariant assumption of an echo signal, time-domain algorithms have significant performance advantages for missile-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) focusing with curve moving trajectory. The Cartesian factorized back projection (CFBP) algorithm is a newly proposed fast time-domain implementation which can avoid massive interpolations to improve the computational efficiency. However, it is difficult to combine effective and efficient data-driven motion compensation (MOCO) for achieving high focusing performance. In this paper, a new data-driven MOCO algorithm is developed under the CFBP framework to deal with the motion error problem for missile-borne SAR application. In the algorithm, spectrum compression is implemented after a CFBP process, and the SAR images are transformed into the spectrum-compressed domain. Then, the analytical image spectrum is obtained by utilizing wavenumber decomposition based on which the property of motion induced error is carefully investigated. With the analytical image spectrum, it is revealed that the echoes from different scattering points are aligned in the same spectrum range and the phase error becomes a spatial invariant component after spectrum compression. Based on the spectrum-compressed domain, an effective and efficient data-driven MOCO algorithm is accordingly developed for accurate error estimation and compensation. Both simulations of missile-borne SAR and raw data experiment from maneuvering highly-squint airborne SAR are provided and analyzed, which show high focusing performance of the proposed algorithm.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play an essential role in various applications, such as transportation and intelligent environmental sensing. However, due to camera motion and complex environments, it can be difficult to recognize the UAV from its surroundings thus, traditional methods often miss detection of UAVs and generate false alarms. To address these issues, we propose a novel method for detecting and tracking UAVs. First, a cross-scale feature aggregation CenterNet (CFACN) is constructed to recognize the UAVs. CFACN is a free anchor-based center point estimation method that can effectively decrease the false alarm rate, the misdetection of small targets, and computational complexity. Secondly, the region of interest-scale-crop-resize (RSCR) method is utilized to merge CFACN and region-of-interest (ROI) CFACN (ROI-CFACN) further, in order to improve the accuracy at a lower computational cost. Finally, the Kalman filter is adopted to track the UAV. The effectiveness of our method is validated using a collected UAV dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our methods can achieve higher accuracy with lower computational cost, being superior to BiFPN, CenterNet, YoLo, and their variants on the same dataset.

Abstract Background Studying genetic variation within and among Haemonchus contortus populations can inform some aspects of this parasite’s population genetics and epidemiology. However, almost nothing is known about such variation in China. Methods Adult males of H. contortus (n = 184) representing seven distinct populations in China were collected, and genetic variation within and among these populations was explored using eight distinct microsatellite markers. Results Genetic parameters, such as heterozygosity and inbreeding coefficient (F IS ) indicated that all eight microsatellites were highly polymorphic. Various analyses (AMOVA, F ST , phylogenetic, structure, mantel test and population dynamics) revealed high within-population variation, low population genetic differentiation and high gene flow for H. contortus in China. Conclusions This study provides a first snapshot of the genetic substructuring of H. contortus populations in China using polymorphic markers, and might provide a starting point for assessing genetic changes over space and time during or following the implementation of particular treatment or control strategies, or changes as a consequence of environmental, management and climatic factors.

Background: Bipolar electro-coagulation has a reported efficacy in treating epilepsy involving functional cortex by pure electro-coagulation or combination with resection. However, the mechanisms of bipolar electro-coagulation are not completely known. We studied the acute cortical blood flow and histological changes after bipolar electro-coagulation in 24 patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. Methods: Twenty-four patients were consecutively enrolled, and divided into three groups according to the date of admission. The regional cortical blood flow (rCBF), electrocorticography, the depth of cortex damage, and acute histological changes (H and E staining, neuronal staining and neurofilament (NF) staining) were analyzed before and after the operation. The t-test analysis was used to compare the rCBF before and after the operation. Results: The rCBF after coagulation was significantly reduced (P < 0.05). The spikes were significantly reduced after electro-coagulation. For the temporal cortex, the depth of cortical damage with output power of 2-9 W after electro-coagulation was 0.34 ± 0.03, 0.48 ± 0.06, 0.69 ± 0.06, 0.84 ± 0.09, 0.98 ± 0.08, 1.10 ± 0.11, 1.11 ± 0.09, and 1.22 ± 0.11 mm, respectively. Coagulation with output power of 4-5 W completely damaged the neurons and NF protein in the molecular layer, external granular layer, and external pyramidal layer. Conclusions: The electro-coagulation not only destroyed the neurons and NF protein, but also reduced the rCBF. We concluded that the injuries caused by electro-coagulation would prevent horizontal synchronization and spread of epileptic discharges, and partially destroy the epileptic focus.

The leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus) is a species of significant economic importance. Although artificial cultivation of P. leopardus has thrived in recent decades, the advancement of selective breeding has been hindered by the lack of comprehensive population genomic data. In this study, we identified over 8.73 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) through whole-genome resequencing of 326 individuals spanning six distinct groups. Furthermore, we categorized 226 individuals with high-coverage sequencing depth (≥14×) into eight clusters based on their genetic profiles and phylogenetic relationships. Notably, four of these clusters exhibited pronounced genetic differentiation compared with the other populations. To identify potentially advantageous loci for P. leopardus, we examined genomic regions exhibiting selective sweeps by analyzing the nucleotide diversity (θπ) and fixation index (FST) in these four clusters. Using these high-coverage resequencing data, we successfully constructed the first haplotype reference panel specific to P. leopardus. This achievement holds promise for enabling high-quality, cost-effective imputation methods. Additionally, we combined low-coverage sequencing data with imputation techniques for a genome-wide association study, aiming to identify candidate SNP loci and genes associated with growth traits. A significant concentration of these genes was observed on chromosome 17, which is primarily involved in skeletal muscle and embryonic development and cell proliferation. Notably, our detailed investigation of growth-related SNPs across the eight clusters revealed that cluster 5 harbored the most promising candidate SNPs, showing potential for genetic selective breeding efforts. These findings provide a robust toolkit and valuable insights into the management of germplasm resources and genome-driven breeding initiatives targeting P. leopardus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
