Naturally-derived proteins or peptides are promising biopolymers for tissue engineering applications owing to their health-promoting activity. Herein, we extracted proteins (~90%) from two-spotted cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) and evaluated their osteoinductive potential in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) under in vitro conditions. The extracted protein isolate was analyzed for the amino acid composition and the mass distribution of the constituent peptide fraction. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to determine the presence of biologically significant functional groups. The cricket protein isolate (CPI) exhibited characteristic protein peaks in the FTIR spectrum. Notably, an enhanced cell viability was observed in the presence of the extracted proteins, showing their biocompatibility. The CPI also exhibited antioxidant properties in a concentration-dependent manner. More significant mineralization was observed in the CPI-treated cells than in the control, suggesting their osteoinductive potential. The upregulation of the osteogenic marker genes (Runx2, ALP, OCN, and BSP) in CPI treated media compared with the control supports their osteoinductive nature. Therefore, cricket-derived protein isolates could be used as functional protein isolate for tissue engineering applications, especially for bone regeneration.

Background/purpose The impact-induced damage of composite structures induced by low-velocity impacts were evaluated to verify the damage evaluation concept using the “memory effects” of tin-coated FBG sensors. Methods Low-velocity impact tests for the composite cylinder with tin-coated FBG sensors were performed at three impact energies. Hoop ring tests for the composite cylinder including impact-induced damage were additionally undertaken in order to measure the burst pressure and to study the parameter correlations. The test results were compared with the numerical results obtained by a finite element analysis (FEA) based on a continuum damage mechanics (CDM) considering damage model. The parameter correlations among the impact parameters and the residual strains induced by tin-coated FBG sensors were investigated based on the tests results. Results Impact behaviors obtained by the tests and the numerical simulation were agreed well. It was found that tin-coated FBG sensors can monitor the strain of the composite cylinder under low-velocity impacts and their strain monitoring capability is comparable to that of normally used FBG sensors. The residual strains of tin-coated FBG sensors were correlated with the impact parameters such as the impact energy, the sensing position of the sensors, and the burst pressure of the composite cylinder. Conclusion The correlations among the residual strains and the parameters proved the damage evaluation concept for composite cylinders using the “memory effects” of tin-coated FBG sensors under low-velocity impact conditions; that is, the impact-induced damage, impact location, and burst pressure can be inversely evaluated by referring to the correlations.

Wind shear can strongly influence the cyclic loading on horizontal axis wind turbine blades. These load fluctuation causes a variation of power output and introduces fatigue load. Thus, individual pitch controllers have been developed that are focused on the load alleviations, however, comes at a price of actuator requirements for control. Moreover, these controllers are unable to apply to already existing wind turbines with active yaw and collective pitch control system. Therefore, the investigations for minimizing load imbalance through the adjustments of yaw misalignment and collective pitch angle are implemented for the rigid and flexible blades under the sheared inflow. By applying the optimization process based on a sequential quadratic programming approach, the optimal yaw and pitch angle can be estimated. Then, the numerical simulations for predicting the performance are performed. The results showed that the fluctuation range of the root flapwise bending moment for the rigid blades can be reduced by 84.5%, whereas the vibratory bending moment for the flexible blades can be reduced by up to approximately 82.4% in the best case. Therefore, the magnitudes of load imbalance can be minimized by the adjustment of the optimal yaw misalignment and collective pitch angle without any power loss.

The magnitude and temporal variations of wind speed considerably influence aerodynamic and structural responses of MW-sized horizontal axis wind turbines. Thus, this paper investigates the variations in airloads and blade behavior of a wind turbine blade resulting from operations in sheared and turbulent flow conditions. First, in order to validate the present methods, comparisons of aerodynamic results were made among the blade element momentum method, free-wake method, and numerical results from the previous studies. Then, the validated methods were applied to a national renewable energy laboratory 5 MW reference wind turbine model for fluid–structure interaction analyses. From the numerical simulations, it can be clearly seen that unfavorable airloads and blade deformations occur due to the sheared and turbulent flow conditions. In addition, it is clear that wake impacts are not as substantial at those of high wind speeds; however, the effects obviously affect the aerodynamic and structural behaviors of the blade at lower wind speeds. Therefore, it is concluded that the numerical results markedly indicate the demand for accurate assessment of wake dynamics for accurate estimations of the aerodynamic and structural responses for sheared and turbulent flow environments.

Tin-coated FBG sensors, which can be used to evaluate the maximum strain experienced by host structures through the quantity of residual strain induced by the tin coating, were fabricated by a dipping method. The residual strain development of the tin-coated FBG sensors was quantitatively investigated by performing increased cyclic loading tests, and compared to that of bare FBG sensors. It was found that the quantity of residual strain showed a quadratic relationship with respect to the maximum strain experienced by the tin-coated FBG sensors, while the quantity of residual strain of bare FBG sensors was negligible. Moreover, after increased cyclic loading tests, the tensile failure strength of the tin-coated FBG sensors was additionally examined using Weibull failure statistics and compared to that of bare FBG sensors. The median failure strength of the tin-coated FBG sensors was 111.8% greater than that of the bare FBG sensors, and the Weibull moduli of the bare FBG sensors and the tin-coated FBG sensors were 13.5 and 8.1, respectively. The static mechanical characteristics of the tin-coated FBG sensors, i.e., residual strain development and the failure strength, can be used as a basis and guidelines for the installation of tin-coated FBG sensors into structures in actual applications.

Wake effects of a horizontal-axis wind-turbine blade on aeroelastic characteristics were investigated under normal operational conditions. A structural analysis was performed employing a nonlinear beam model based on the large deflection beam theory. For inflow analysis on rotor blades, a free-vortex wake method was employed. An advantage of the present approach is its ability to calculate directly the induced velocities from the wake. Also, for the predictions of aerodynamic loads, a fully turbulent flow solution is invoked in FLUENT, where the k-ω SST turbulent model of two-dimensional airfoils is adopted for transient analysis. To verify and validate the aerodynamic model for wind turbines, the wake geometry and the aerodynamic coefficients from the present simulation are compared with measurements and numerical results of previous studies. The warm-season hydroclimatology stemming primarily from the monsoon and typhoons in East Asia is an important determinant of sustainable water supplies for coupled human and natural systems. Therefore, in this study, we develop an empirical approach to the separation of summer rainfall into typhoon and monsoon types. In addition, exploratory analysis is conducted for regional patterns of summer precipitation across the Korean Peninsula (KP) to determine changes in the various types of temperature gradient. The results show that atmospheric thermal transitions lead significant and consistent changes in rainfall during the boreal summer season (June–September) in South Korea. For positive land–ocean contrast years, statistically significant positive anomalies of summer precipitation were exhibited in the interior and eastern river basins. In contrast, for negative years, suppression of seasonal precipitation patterns was detected. Moreover, during years of positive meridional temperature gradient, summers tended to be wetter relative to the long-term average. Although the time window of typhoon impacts may vary for different episodic typhoon events, the obtained positive anomalies of seasonal precipitation were more significant after removing the effects of tropical cyclones over the KP.

Horizontal axis wind turbines operate under yawed conditions for a considerable period of time due to the power control mechanism or sudden changes in the wind direction. This in turn can alter the dynamic characteristics of a turbine blade because the flow over the rotor plane may trigger complicated induced velocity patterns. In this study, an aeroelastic analysis under yawed flow conditions is carried out to investigate the effects of yaw error on the blade behaviors and dynamic stability. A beam model including geometric nonlinearity coupled with unsteady aerodynamics based on a free-vortex wake method with the blade element theory is employed in the present study. The aerodynamic approach for a horizontal axis wind turbine blade under yawed flow conditions is verified through comparison with measurements. It is also shown that the present method gives slightly better results at high yaw angles than does the method previously published in the literature. The dynamic instabilities of a National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5 MW reference wind turbine have subsequently been investigated for various wind speeds and yaw angles. Observations are made that yaw effects induce considerable changes in airloads and blade structural behavior. Also, the aeroelastic damping values for this particular blade under yawed flow conditions can be reduced by up to approximately 33% in the worst case. Therefore, it is concluded that the impacts of yaw misalignments adversely influenced the dynamic aeroelastic stability of the horizontal axis wind turbine blade.

The concept underlying metal-coated optical fiber sensors (MCOFSs) is to evaluate the maximum strains previously experienced by host structures from the residual strains induced by an elasto-plastic metal coating. The performances of MCOFSs are altered by the selection of an adhesive as well as the geometric parameters of the adhesive layer. To investigate their effects on sensor performance, a finite element (FE) model was proposed and verified by experiments involving three different adhesives using metal-coated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The strain transfer coefficients, the residual strains, and the sensitivity coefficients for the strain level were calculated to examine the influence of the parameters through a finite element analysis (FEA). We found that the nonlinear and plastic properties of the adhesive should be considered to achieve accurate estimation when evaluating the maximum host strains from the residual strains. Moreover, small underlying adhesive thickness and short bonding length are favorable for a MCOFS with 10 mm gauge length. Finally, we presented a relationship (among the residual strain, bonding length of MCOFSs, and the maximum host strains) that helps to quantitatively evaluate the maximum host strains from the residual strains.

In this study, the thickness optimization for uni-directional (UD) glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates of the spar cap of composite tidal blades was performed under the tip deflection constrains. The spar cap was composed of GFRP composites and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The stress distributions in the blade as well as its material costs for the optimized results were additionally investigated. The optimized thickness was obtained by interacting a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm and an ABAQUS software to calculate an objective function. It was confirmed that the thickness of UD GFRP increased with a decrease of the restrained tip deflection when a thickness of UD CFRP laminates was constrained to 9 mm. The weight of the optimized spar-cap increased up to 96.2% while the maximum longitudinal tensile stress decreased up to 24.6%. The thickness of UD GFRP laminates increased with a decrease of the thickness of UD CFRP laminates when the tip deflection was constrained to 126.83 mm. The weight increased up to 40.1%, but the material cost decreased up to 16.97%. Finally, the relationships among the weight, internal tensile stress, and material costs were presented based on the optimized thicknesses of the spar cap.

Morphing aircraft capable of varying their wing form can operate efficiently at various flight conditions. However, radical morphing of the aircraft leads to increased structural complexities, resulting in occurrence of dynamic instabilities such as flutter, which can lead to catastrophic events. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to investigate and understand the changes in flutter characteristics of morphing wings, to ensure uncompromised safety and maximum reliability. In this paper, a study on the flutter characteristics of the folding wing type morphing concept is conducted, to examine the effect of changes in folding angles on the flutter speed and flutter frequency. The subsonic aerodynamic theory Doublet Lattice Method (DLM) and p-k method are used, to perform the flutter analysis in MSC.NASTRAN. The present baseline flutter characteristics correspond well with the results from previous study. Furthermore, enhancement of the flutter characteristics of an aluminum folding wing is proposed, by varying the outboard wing folding angle independently of the inboard wing folding angle. It is clearly found that the flutter characteristics are strongly influenced by changes in the inboard/outboard folding angles, and significant improvement in the flutter characteristics of a folding wing can be achieved, by varying its outboard wing folding angle.

In general, a conventional flap on an aircraft wing can reduce the aerodynamic efficiency due to geometric discontinuity. On the other hand, the aerodynamic performance can be improved by using a shape-morphing wing instead of a separate flap. In this research, a new flap morphing mechanism that can change the wing shape smoothly was devised to prevent aerodynamic losses. Moreover, a prototype wing was fabricated to demonstrate the morphing mechanism. A shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuator was used for the morphing wing. The specific current range was measured to control the SMA actuator. The deflection angles at the trailing edge were also measured while various currents were applied to the SMA actuator. The trailing edge of the wing changed smoothly when the current was applied. Moreover, the deflection angle also increased as the current increased. The maximum frequency level was around 0.1 Hz. The aerodynamic performance of the deformed airfoil by the SMA wire was analyzed by using the commercial program GAMBIT and FLUENT. The results were compared with the results of an undeformed wing. It was demonstrated that the morphing mechanism changes the wing shape smoothly without the extension of the wing skin.

Wind turbine aerodynamics remains a particularly challenging and crucial research for wind energy industry. The blade element momentum theory is the most widely used in predicting the performance of wind turbine, since the method is simple and fast numerical algorithm. The flow field generated by rotary wing is considerably important and complicated, however, the BEM method has some limitations to model the unsteady effects. To overcome these limitations, the aerodynamic analysis using a time-marching free-vortex wake method was performed in this paper. Moreover, the inboard region of the blade experience a delay in stall and enhanced values of the normal force coefficient because of rotational boundary layer augmentation and three-dimensional effects. For this reason, Raj-Selig stall delay model was applied in this research. The numerical results were compared with experimental data, and the present results show excellent agreement with experiment.

The wake effects on aeroelastic deflections and aerodynamics for the isotropic and composite rotor blades have been investigated. To take into account the large deflections and rotations of rotor blades, a large-deflection beam modelwas used. A free-wake model basedon vortex-lattice method wasused to obtain the aerodynamic forces while considering wake effects. Newton–Raphson iteration method was applied to the aeroelastic analysis to obtain the numericalsolutions.The flap,lag,andtorsiondeflectionsconsideringwakeeffectsbyusingthefree-wakemodelwere investigated and compared with the results using two-dimensional quasi-steady model. Finally, aerodynamic changes after aeroelastic deflections were investigated.

The quasi-steady airload model based on the blade element method has been coupled with dynamic inflow model developed by Peters and He. The nonlinear steady response to periodic motion is obtained by integrating the full finite element equation in time through a coupled trim procedure with a vehicle trim for stability analysis. The aerodynamic and structural characteristics of dynamic inflow model are validated against other numerical analysis results by comparing induced inflow and blade tip deflections(flap, lag). In order to validate aeroelastic stability of dynamic inflow model, lag damping are also compared with those of linear inflow model.

Aeroelastic analysis of hingeless rotor blades in hover was performed. Large deflection beam theory was applied to analyze blade motions with effects of geometric structural nonlinearity. Aerodynamic loads for aeroelastic analysis were calculated through a three-dimensional aerodynamic model which is based on the unsteady vortex lattice method. Wake geometry was described using a time-marching free-wake method. Lead-lag damping ratio and frequency were calculated to evaluate aeroelastic stability of hingeless rotor system. Numerical results of aeroelastic analysis for hingeless rotor blades were presented and compared with results based on experimental data and two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory in which uniform inflow model was used. It was shown that wakes significantly affect the steady-state deflections and aeroelastic stability.

The fourth trigger station composed of 144 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) is currently being constructed to enhance the efficiency of muon triggers in the end cap regions of the CMS detector. All new CMS end cap RPCs gaps are produced in accordance with QA at Korea Detector Laboratory in Korea. The qualified gas gaps passing QC have been delivered to three assembly sites; CERN in Switzerland, BARC in India, and Ghent University in Belgium for the RPCs detector assembly. We report the status of the detector production and performance of RE4 RPCs including the sophisticated test procedures for the selection of qualified detectors.

We report a systematic study of detection rate capability of phenolic four-gap resistive plate chamber (RPC) in use of high-energy physics experiments. In the current study, a prototype phenolic four-gap RPCs were tested for cosmic muons and gamma rays irradiated by a 150 mCi 137Cs source. The efficiency plateau of cosmic muons measured by the four-gap RPCs with a proper threshold was about 600 V. Furthermore, the shift in the operation high voltage caused by a gamma rays background rate of 3.0 kHz cm−2 was measured as about 400 V, which was smaller than the size of the measured muon efficiency plateau. We conclude from the present study that the four-gap RPCs are capable of high-rate triggers in high-η region of the CMS experiment.

Objectives Recently, several authors reported that Tc-99m DMSA renal scan frequently showed cortical defects of the involved kidneys even in the patients with acute pyelonephritis who did not show abnormal findings in the ultrasonography and intravenous pyelography (IVP). Methods In order to evaluate the utilities of Tc-99m DMSA renal scan and the clinical meaning of cortical defects in the Tc-99m DMSA renal scan of the patients with acute pyelonephritis, ninety two patients with acute pyelonephritis, from March 1991 to February 1994 in Chungnam National University Hospital(CNUH), were included in this study. Patients were subdivided as Group A:Patients showing normal Tc-99m DMSA renal scan (n = 42) and Group B:Patients with definite cortical defects on the Tc-99m DMSA renal scan (n = 50). We compared clinical characteristics such as age and sex, recurrency, duration of fever, bacterial culture study, incidence of renal insufficiency and the results of renal ultrasonography and intravenous pyelography between the two groups. Results Fifty four percents of 92 patients with acute pyelonephritis showed a significantly longer febrile period after admission, higher positive rates on the urine and blood culture studies and higher incidence of renal insufficiency than those of the Group A patients. Sixty nine percents of Group B patients showed normal results in ultrasonography or IVP study. Conclusions Tc-99m DMSA renal scan was a more sensitive imaging test than ultrasonography in kidneys and IVP to detect pyelonephritis lesions and may be useful to predict the patient group with a severe disease course. These patients may need more careful management and further studies to evaluate the possibility of complications.

In this study, the aeroelastic analysis of rotorcraft in forward flight has been performed using dynamic wake model to handle unsteady aerodynamics. The quasi-steady airload model based on the blade element method has been coupled with dynamic wake model developed by Peters and He. The nonlinear steady response to periodic motion is obtained by integrating the full finite element equation in time through a coupled trim procedure with a vehicle trim for stability analysis. The aerodynamic and structural characteristics of dynamic wake model are validated against other numerical analysis results by comparing induced inflow and blade tip deflections(flap, lag). In addition, mechanism of aeroelastic instability will be investigated by evaluating the aeroelastic stability using different linear inflow and dynamic wake models at a low advance ratio. As the influences of nonlinearity result in significant differences in the blade deflection behavior and aeroelastic characteristics, an appropriate analysis is required to capture these attributes. The dynamic wake model is more accurate than the linear inflow model is at low advance ratios (0.0 ≤ µ ≤ 0.15) yet more time-effective than 3-D aerodynamic models. Thus it is most suitable for aeroelastic analysis in the preliminary design of a helicopter.

In general, high aspect ratio structures such as wind turbine rotor blades are more likely to get damages from unexpected loads. To maintain those structures stably, studies on the reduction of deflections should be performed for the design of wind turbines. The newly developed large wind turbine blades have result in more flexible in which geometric structural nonlinearities become crucial factor. For these reasons, nonlinear beam theory model is used for the structural analysis. Furthermore, as wind turbines become lighter and flexible, aeroelastic problems have become considerably important issue and analyses of comprehensive systems are needed to evaluate and understand the complex interaction of the elastic deformations of large blades and the aerodynamic forces acting on them. Therefore, aeroelastic analyses of wind turbine blades were conducted using the vortex method in this paper. It concerns the effects of steady-state deflections of a large isolated blade on its aeroelastic stability.

Today, controversies continue with regards to the potential impact of obesity or increased body mass index (BMI) on actual pathological features of prostate cancer and/or clinical outcome after radical prostatectomy (RP). Moreover, a paucity of relevant data exist in the literature regarding Asian or Korean men. For the first time to our knowledge, the study demonstrated that although higher BMI was significantly associated with extracapsular extension of tumour, BMI did not significantly enhance ability to preoperatively predict extracapsular extension of tumour and was not significantly associated with PSA outcome as well as other objective pathological outcomes in Korean men undergoing RP, who are generally leaner than Western counterparts.• To investigate the impact of increased body mass index (BMI) on pathological features after radical prostatectomy (RP) in Korean patients.• We reviewed the records of 1000 Korean patients who underwent RP for prostate cancer and assessed the differences in pathological outcomes and biochemical recurrence-free survival after RP according to BMI of subjects via univariate and multivariate analyses. • A multivariate logistics regression model, the performance of which was analysed from a receiver operator characteristics curve, was applied to assess the predictive capacity of variables shown to be significant predictors of adverse pathological outcome.• Among our subjects, only 17 (1.7%) men had BMI ≥30 kg/m(2). After adjusting for various clinical variables, BMI (highest quartile vs others) was shown to be significantly associated with extracapsular extension of tumour (P= 0.014) and positive surgical margin (P= 0.019), but not with high pathological Gleason score (P= 0.912) and seminal vesicle invasion (P= 0.191). • Meanwhile, the addition of BMI to a multivariate model devised for preoperatively predicting extracapsular extension of tumour did not significantly increase predictive accuracy of the model (P= 0.319). On multivariate analysis, BMI was not shown to be a significant predictor of biochemical recurrence-free survival (P= 0.201).• Although higher BMI was significantly associated with extracapsular extension of tumour, BMI did not significantly enhance the ability to preoperatively predict extracapsular extension of tumour and was not significantly associated with PSA outcome or with other objective pathological outcomes in Korean men undergoing RP, who are generally leaner than their western counterparts.

BACKGROUND: Tumor vascularity is a potential predictor of treatment outcomes in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), and contrast enhancement of tumors in computed tomography (CT) is correlated significantly with microvessel density. In this study, the authors investigated whether tumor enhancement in contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) is useful for predicting outcomes in patients with mRCC who are receiving antiangiogenic therapy. METHODS: Attenuation values were reviewed retrospectively on CECT images of all metastatic lesions in 66 patients from February 2007 to November 2008. All patients received a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (either sunitinib or sorafenib). Tumor response was evaluated on CECT studies every 12 weeks. The authors analyzed the association between contrast enhancement and treatment outcomes, including objective response, tumor size reduction rate, time to response, and time to progression. RESULTS: In 46 patients, 198 metastatic lesions were assessed. Tumor size was reduced in 140 lesions (70.7%) and was increased in 58 lesions (29.3%). The mean reduction in size was 23.8%. The overall mean time to response and the time to progression were 8.6 months and 16.4 months, respectively. In multivariate analyses, tumor enhancement and enhancement pattern were associated with objective responses (P = .003 and P = .028, respectively). In addition, tumor enhancement was associated with tumor size reduction (P = .004). In Cox proportional hazards models, only tumor enhancement was associated significantly with the time to size reduction and progression-free survival (P = .03 and P = .015, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Tumor enhancement on CECT images was associated with treatment outcomes and was identified as a potential predictor of treatment outcomes after antiangiogenic therapy in patients with mRCC. Modern horizontal axis wind turbine blades are long, slender, and flexible structures that can undergo considerable deformation, leading to blade failures (e.g., blade-tower collision). For this reason, it is important to estimate blade behaviors accurately when designing large-scale wind turbines. In this study, a numerical analysis considering blade torsional degree of freedom, geometric nonlinearity, and gravity was utilized to examine the effects of these factors on the aeroelastic blade behavior of a large-scale horizontal axis wind turbine. The results predicted that flapwise deflection is mainly affected by the torsional degree of freedom, which causes the blade bending deflections to couple to torsional deformation, thereby varying the aerodynamic loads through changes in the effective angle of attack. Edgewise deflection and torsional deformation are mostly influenced by the periodic gravitational force on the wind turbine blade.

Estimating the deflection of flexible composite wind turbine blades is very important to prevent the blades from hitting the tower. Several researchers have used fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors—a type of optical fiber sensor (OFS)—to monitor the structural behavior of the blades. They can be installed on the surface and/or embedded in the interior of composites. However, the typical installation positions of OFSs present several problems, including delamination of sensing probes and a higher risk of fiber breakage during installation. In this study, we proposed using the bonding line between the shear web and spar cap as a new installation position of embedded OFSs for estimating the deflection of the blades. Laboratory coupon tests were undertaken preliminarily to confirm the strain measuring capability of embedded FBG sensors in adhesive layers, and the obtained values were verified by comparison with results obtained by electrical strain gauges and finite element analysis. We performed static loading tests on a 100 kW composite wind turbine blade to evaluate its deflections using embedded FBG sensors positioned in the bonding line. The deflections were estimated by classical beam theory considering a rigid body rotation near the tip of the blade. The evaluated tip deflections closely matched those measured by a linear variable differential transformer. Therefore, we verified the capability of embedded FBG sensors for evaluating the deflections of wind turbine blades. In addition, we confirmed that the bonding line between the shear web and spar cap is a practical location to embed the FBG sensors. (Some figures may appear in colour only in the online journal)
