Abstract

Despite motion artifacts are a major source of noise in fNIRS infant data, how to approach motion correction in this population has only recently started to be investigated. Homer2 offers a wide range of motion correction methods and previous work on simulated and adult data suggested the use of Spline interpolation and Wavelet filtering as optimal methods for the recovery of trials affected by motion. However, motion artifacts in infant data differ from those in adults' both in amplitude and frequency of occurrence. Therefore, artifact correction recommendations derived from adult data might not be the optimal for infant data. We hypothesized that the combined use of Spline and Wavelet would outperform their individual use on data with complex profiles of motion artifacts. To demonstrate this, we first compared, on infant semi-simulated data, the performance of several motion correction techniques on their own and of the novel combined approach; then, we investigated the performance of Spline and Wavelet alone and in combination on real cognitive data from three datasets collected with infants of different ages (5, 7 and 10 months), with different tasks (auditory/visual and tactile) and with different NIRS systems. To quantitatively estimate and compare the efficacy of these techniques, we adopted four metrics: hemodynamic response recovery error, within-subject standard deviation, between-subjects standard deviation and number of trials that survived each correction method. Our results demonstrated that (i) it is always better correcting for motion artifacts than rejecting the corrupted trials; (ii) Wavelet filtering on its own and in combination with Spline interpolation seems to be the most effective approach in reducing the between- and the within-subject standard deviations. Importantly, the combination of Spline and Wavelet was the approach providing the best performance in semi-simulation both at low and high levels of noise, also recovering most of the trials affected by motion artifacts across all datasets, a crucial result when working with infant data. 12. The impact of increasing education levels on rising life expectancy: a decomposition analysis for Italy, Denmark, and the USA

Abstract

Significant reductions in mortality are reflected in strong increases in life expectancy particularly in industrialized countries. Previous analyses relate these improvements primarily to medical innovations and advances in health-related behaviors. Mostly ignored, however, is the question to what extent the gains in life expectancy are related to structural changes in the populations due to increasing education levels. We decompose changes of the total populations’ life expectancy at age 30 in Italy, Denmark, and the USA, over the 20-year period between 1990 and 2010 into the effects of education-specific mortality changes (“M effect”) and changes in the populations’ educational structure (“P effect”). We use the “replacement decomposition technique” to further subdivide the M effect into the contributions by the individual education groups. While most of the increases in life expectancy are due to the effect of changing mortality, a large proportion of improvements in longevity can indeed be attributed to the changing structure of the population by level of education in all three countries. The estimated contribution of the P effect ranges from around 15% for men in the USA to approximately 40% for women in Denmark. This study demonstrates strong associations between education and overall population health, suggesting that education policies can also be seen as indirect health policies.

Item does not contain fulltext, A central assumption in the perceptual attunement literature holds that exposure to a speech sound contrast leads to improvement in native speech sound processing. However, whether the amount of exposure matters for this process has not been put to a direct test. We elucidated indicators of frequency-dependent perceptual attunement by comparing 5-8-month-old Dutch infants’ discrimination of tokens containing a highly frequent [hɪt-he:t] and a highly infrequent [hʏt-hø:t] native vowel contrast as well as a non-native [hɛt-hæt] vowel contrast in a behavioral visual habituation paradigm (Experiment 1). Infants discriminated both native contrasts similarly well, but did not discriminate the non-native contrast. We sought further evidence for subtle differences in the processing of the two native contrasts using near-infrared spectroscopy and a within-participant design (Experiment 2). The neuroimaging data did not provide additional evidence that responses to native contrasts are modulated by frequency of exposure. These results suggest that even large differences in exposure to a native contrast may not directly translate to behavioral and neural indicators of perceptual attunement, raising the possibility that frequency of exposure does not influence improvements in discriminating native contrasts.

Abstract

Previous studies conducted in Western countries suggest that obesity at older ages affects length of life as well as active life expectancy (ALE). However, we know little of the relationship between BMI and ALE among older adults in Asian countries partly because lack of studies. We use the Nihon University Japanese Longitudinal Study of Aging, a nationally representative sample of older adults age 65 and over at baseline with interviews conducted in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2009, and a mail survey was conducted in 2013. We compute BMI based on self-reported height and weight at baseline in 1999 and ALE as no difficulty in any of 5 ADLs (bathing, eating, walking, transferring and toileting) or 5 IADLs (preparing own meal, using a telephone, managing own money, shopping personal items and medication). Using multistate life tables we estimate life expectancy and ALE by sex and BMI category.

Abstract

Abstract Background Calcium channel blockers and angiotensin II receptor blockers are commonly prescribed to treat hypertension. Massive overdoses can cause both distributive and cardiogenic shock because of their effects on vascular smooth muscles and severe myocardial depression. Case Presentation We present the case of a 46‐year‐old man who was brought to our emergency department after ingesting 1210 mg amlodipine and 936 mg candesartan. The patient's hemodynamic status deteriorated despite treatment with vasopressors, calcium gluconate, and hyperinsulinemia‐euglycemia therapy with mechanical ventilation. Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was initiated for refractory shock. The patient was weaned off extracorporeal membrane oxygenation on day 5 and discharged on day 18 of hospitalization. Conclusion When medical therapies are ineffective, aggressive venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation should be considered for the management of refractory shock in the setting of calcium channel blocker with angiotensin II receptor blocker overdose.

Abstract

The PF-AR is a full-time single-bunch light source for SR experiments in the X-ray region. Electrons are injected at 3.0 GeV and ramped up to the final energy of 6.5 GeV for normal user operation or 5.0 GeV for medical application. The typical initial beam current is 55 mA at 6.5 GeV and the beam lifetime is 15 h at 50 mA. The initial single-bunch impurity better than 10-8 was achieved, however, degradation of the impurity during the users’ run has to be solved. Since the present emittance of 290nm·rad is not satisfactory, we are making an effort to realize the minimum attainable emittance of 160nm·rad. The high quality of pulse X-ray has brought us abundant occasions to do time-domain and/or time-resolved measurements. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new project for upgrading the 2.5-GeV Photon Factory (PF) storage ring is now being undertaken to create six new short-straight sections and to lengthen the existing eight straight sections. The short-straight sections will provide an opportunity to install short-period narrow-gap undulators, while the extensions of existing straight sections will be taken advantage of updating current insertion devices to the latest models in future. To this end, the lattice configuration around the straight sections is modified by replacing old quadrupole magnets with new shorter ones and placing them closer to the near-by bending magnets. Necessary replacement of the vacuum ducts and the beamline front ends will be carried out together.
