We herein report a very unusual case of small bowel obstruction caused by phytobezoar in a 69-year-old woman who consumed a large amount of bracken. The patient presented with nausea and vomiting. Computed tomography revealed an air-filled foreign body in the jejunum that had likely caused the small bowel obstruction. A fibrous foreign body diagnosed as a phytobezoar was detected using double-balloon enteroscopy. The obstruction was successfully resolved by crushing the phytobezoar repeatedly using a snare. Small bowel obstructions caused by phytobezoars are often treated with surgical interventions. However, endoscopic fragmentation using a snare is a minimally invasive treatment alternative.

Obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic alterations increase the risk of colorectal cancer and adenoma (CRA). Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or pancreatic disease (NAFPD) shares many risk factors with CRA that may have significant roles in its development; however, the relationship between CRA and NAFLD/NAFPD remains unclear.This cross-sectional study recruited 712 eligible participants without current drinking who had undergone total colonoscopy as part of a health checkup. These participants were classified into a CRA group (n = 236) and a control group (n = 439), which consisted of individuals without CRA and a history of polyp resection. NAFLD and NAFPD were diagnosed based on abdominal ultrasonography findings.Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was observed more frequently in individuals with CRA than in the control group (55.9% vs 41.6%, P 0.01). There was no significant association between NAFPD and CRA; however, serum pancreatic amylase (P-amylase) levels were significantly lower in individuals with CRA. Although NAFLD was one of the factors increasing the presence of CRA (odds ratio [OR], 1.50; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07-2.10), low P-amylase levels were significantly associated with the presence of CRA (OR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.04-2.88) independent of age, sex, current smoking, obesity, metabolic alterations including insulin resistance, and NAFLD.Low serum P-amylase levels were a possible independent risk factor for CRA in the present study. The latent pancreatic exocrine-endocrine-gut relationship was considered a novel pathway involved in obesity-related CRA development, in non-alcoholic individuals.

The typical macroscopic appearance of gastrointestinal follicular lymphoma (FL) are multiple white granules or small white polyps, called multiple lymphomatous polyposis type, and subsequent mass lesions with or without ulceration; however, an ulcer type with a stricture is extremely rare. We report a case of a 79-year-old male with severe jejunal stricture due to FL with an uncommon chromosomal translocation t(2;18)(p12;q21). The patient was treated with jejunectomy subsequent rituximab monotherapy with a favorable response. The presence of the stricture made its endoscopic diagnosis confusing; however, it was certainly accompanied by the distinctive white granules on the surface of the tumor as seen in typical FL. With the possibility of an FL with stricture in mind, it is important to collect subtle endoscopic findings of the surrounding mucosa carefully, in order to arrive at an accurate endoscopic diagnosis and eventually to the proper therapeutic option.

To assess the usefulness of linked color imaging (LCI), a recently developed image-enhanced endoscopy technique, in the endoscopic diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE).Thirty white light images (WLIs) and 30 WLI+LCI images collected from patients with and without EoE were randomly and blindly reviewed by 10 endoscopists, including four experts (Exs) and six non-Exs. Edema, ring, exudate furrows, and strictures were rated on the adjusted EoE endoscopic reference score; the diagnosis of EoE was assessed. Using the kappa value, inter- and intra-observer agreements were analyzed among endoscopists.WLI+LCI images had a higher diagnostic accuracy for EoE than WLIs (0.85 vs. 0.70, respectively), especially in non-Exs or endoscopists with no experience with EoE patients. Inter-observer agreement for WLI+LCI images statistically surpassed WLIs for furrows (kappa, 0.73 vs. 0.67, respectively;LCI can contribute to the improvement of the endoscopic diagnosis for EoE, with "moderate" to "substantial" consistency, by enhancing the visibility of abnormal findings, leading to reduced diagnostic disparities among endoscopists.

Background and Aim Obesity affects the gut microbiome, which in turn increases the risk for colorectal cancer. Several studies have shown the mechanisms by which some bacteria may influence the development of colorectal cancer; however, gut microbiome characteristics in obese patients with colorectal cancer remain unclear. Therefore, this study evaluated their gut microbiome profile and its relationship with metabolic markers. Methods The study assessed fecal samples from 36 consecutive patients with colorectal cancer and 38 controls without colorectal cancer. To identify microbiotic variations between patients with colorectal cancer and controls, as well as between nonobese and obese individuals, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was performed. Results Principal coordinate analysis showed significant differences in the overall structure of the microbiome among the study groups. The α‐diversity, assessed by the Chao1 index or Shannon index, was higher in patients with colorectal cancer versus controls. The relative abundance of the genera Enterococcus, Capnocytophaga, and Polaribacter was significantly altered in obese patients with colorectal cancer, whose serum low‐density lipoprotein concentrations were positively correlated with the abundance of the genus Enterococcus; among the most abundant species was Enterococcus faecalis, observed at lower levels in obese versus nonobese patients. Conclusions This study demonstrated several compositional alterations of the gut microbiome in patients with colorectal cancer and showed that a reduced presence of E. faecalis may be associated with obesity‐related colorectal cancer development. The gut microbiome may provide novel insights into the potential mechanisms in obesity‐related colorectal carcinogenesis., This study demonstrated that a reduced presence of Enterococcus faecalis may be associated with the obesity‐related colorectal cancer development. Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is an uncommon disease characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract in the absence of secondary causes and presents with a variety of gastrointestinal manifestations. Important diagnostic evidence for EGE can be provided by endoscopy; however, the specific small-bowel capsule endoscopic (SBCE) findings remain unknown. We herein report the SBCE findings of three cases of EGE as well as those of the previous cases. The most common findings in patients with EGE were multiple erythema and erosions with surrounding redness on SBCE; these findings should be considered for the diagnostic evaluation for EGE.

Alcohol consumption and smoking pose a significant risk for esophageal squamous cell neoplasia (ESCN) development in males; however, ESCN is often diagnosed in non-drinking and non-smoking females. The mechanisms underlying these differences remain elusive, and understanding them can potentially identify novel pathways involved in ESCN development. We performed short-read sequencing to identify somatic variants on a cancer panel targeting 409 genes using DNA extracted from the superficial squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and adjacent non-neoplastic epithelium (NE), and immunohistochemical staining of the protein encoded by the target gene. All male patients (n = 117) were drinkers or smokers, whereas 45% of the female patients (n = 33) were not. Somatic variants were compared among three age-matched groups: 13 female ESCC patients with smoking and drinking habits (known-risk group, F-KR), 13 female ESCC patients without these habits (unknown-risk group, F-UR), and 27 males with ESCC and smoking and drinking habits (M-KR). In the NE, the frequencies of CDKN2A variants were significantly higher in F-UR than in F-KR and M-KR. In both ESCC and NE, p14ARF was significantly overexpressed in F-UR than in the other groups. In conclusion, CDKN2A might be important in ESCC development, independent of known risk factors.

Racemic α-monosubstituted cyclopentanones were converted to optically active forms by a thermodynamically controlled deracemization using TADDOL-type host molecule 1 in alkaline aqueous MeOH. The efficiency of this conversion was strongly influenced by the ratio of the solvent components (H2O/MeOH) and the functionality and architecture of the α-side-chain on the cyclopentanones. For example, (R)-2-(2-benzyloxyethyl)cyclopentanone (9) was obtained in 89% yield with 97% ee using a 7:3 mixture of H2O/MeOH as the solvent. X-ray analytical studies were also carried out and disclosed the nature of this chiral molecular recognition process in the solid phase.

The luminescence and structure of a water-soluble helicate Eu complex with LCOOH, which is a hexadentate ligand with COOH groups, were examined in solutions of various pH. The Eu complex EuLCOOH is more than eight-coordinated around Eu, and one of the two carboxylate groups is not bound, even in the powdered state, based on the FT-IR measurement. The synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction peaks of EuLCOOH broadened because of amorphous-like aggregation. EuLCOOH retains the ff emission of Eu in a wide pH range of 2.6–9.7 and shows spectral reversibility at pH = 1.9–11.9. From Horrocks' equation, the number of coordinated water molecules to Eu of EuLCOOH in the initial condition (3.0 × 10−5 mol cm−3; pH 2.6–9.7) was estimated to be 1, but it increased in both strongly alkaline and acidic solutions. Molecular structural changes in these solutions were assumed from the quantum yields and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry measurements. For instance, one carboxyl group of EuLCOOH could provide hydrophilicity in the initial condition, and the other would be released from Eu at pH 2.1–2.6. Furthermore, EuLCOOH decomposes below pH 1.9, but recovers with adjustments toward the initial pH. The ff emission of TbLCOOH with a coordinated water molecule also appears in the green wavelength region in the initial condition. The luminescence ability of TbLCOOH in water is higher than that in its powder. The luminescence processes of these complexes are discussed as an energy relaxation through the excited triplet state of LCOOH assigned from the phosphorescence band of GdLCOOH.

SUMMARY Accurate temperature control of brain tissue during hypothermia treatment is necessary in order to prevent secondary brain damage and to avoid various side effects. Thus, the visualization of the intracerebral temperature distribution in hypothermia treatment was studied at the fundamental level. For this purpose a virtual reality technology was used to create a mathematical model that reflects metabolic heat production and Fourier heat conduction in a brain with the necessary parameters based on various clinical models. In the present study, an experimental system was developed to examine a mathematical simulation of the blood flow in a human head by using a solid brain model constructed using silicon rubber in the shape of a brain based on MRI data, taking into account the metabolic heat given off by three film heaters and including six sensors for the measurement of regional brain temperature. The mathematical simulation describes the internal temperature distribution in a brain with a similar structure to the brain solid model. The results of mathematical simulations and experiments using the brain solid model were quite consistent in the steady state, including control of regional temperature. This allows for the performance of heat conduction experiments under conditions similar to those of a living body, in which the internal temperature is clinically difficult to observe. Thus, the mathematical simulation is confirmed to be useful together with experiments using the solid model for the study of future brain hypothermia treatment. C⃝ 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We previously found that surprisingly many V2 neurons showed selective responses to particular angles embedded within continuous contours [M. Ito & H. Komatsu (2004)Journal of Neuroscience, 24, 3313-3324]. Here, we addressed whether the selectivity is dependent on the presence of individual constituent components or on the unique combination of these components. To reveal roles of constituent half-lines in response to whole angles, we conducted a quantitative model study after the framework of cascade models. Our linear-non-linear summation model implemented a few subunits selective to particular half-lines and was fitted to neuronal responses for each neuron. The study indicates that the best-fitting models well replicate the selectivity in the majority of V2 neurons and that the angle selectivity is dependent on a linear combination of responses to individual half-line components of the angles. The implication is that optimal angles are given by a combination of two preferred half-line components and the selectivity is sharpened by introducing suppression to non-preferred half-line components, rather than a specific facilitatory interaction between two preferred half-line components. The study indicates the participation of the gain control of responsiveness according to the number of half-line components. We also showed that the selectivity to acute angles depends on a combination of responses to one preferred component and weak responses to another component. Therefore, we concluded that the angle selectivity is dependent on selective responses to individual half-line components of the angles rather than a unique combination between them, whereas neurons could be selective to various angle widths at area V2.

Previous electrophysiological, neuroimaging and lesion studies have suggested that the anterior part of the monkey inferior temporal (IT) cortex, or area TE, plays an important role in colour processing. However, little is known about how colour information is distributed in these cortical regions. Here, we explored the distribution of colour-selective activity in alert macaque monkeys using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with two types of stimuli: a multicoloured ('Mondrian') pattern and an isoluminant colour grating. These two types of stimuli are both commonly used in human fMRI studies, but Mondrian stimuli, which contain a richer variety of hues and hence might be more suitable for activating higher-order areas than grating stimuli, have not been used to examine colour-selectivity in higher-order areas in earlier monkey studies. With the Mondrian stimuli, we observed that areas along the ventral pathway, V1, V2/V3, V4 and the IT cortex, responded more strongly to colour stimuli than to luminance stimuli. In the IT cortex, we found that colour-selective activities are not distributed uniformly, but are localized in discrete regions, each extending several millimetres in the anterior or posterior part of the IT cortex. The colour-selective activation in the anterior IT was observed only with the Mondrian stimuli, whereas the colour-selective activation in the posterior IT was observed with both the Mondrian and grating stimuli, with little overlap. These findings suggest that there are multiple subregions with differing stimulus selectivities distributed in the IT cortex, and that colour information is processed in these discrete subregions.

Angles and junctions embedded within contours are important features to represent the shape of objects. To study the neuronal basis to extract these features, we conducted extracellular recordings while two macaque monkeys performed a fixation task. Angle stimuli were the combination of two straight half-lines larger than the size of the classical receptive fields (CRFs). Each line was drawn from the center to outside the CRFs in 1 of 12 directions, so that the stimuli passed through the CRFs and formed angles at the center of the CRFs. Of 114 neurons recorded from the superficial layer of area V2, 91 neurons showed selective responses to these angle stimuli. Of these, 41 neurons (36.0%) showed selective responses to wide angles between 60 degrees and 150 degrees that were distinct from responses to straight lines or sharp angles (30 degrees ). Responses were highly selective to a particular angle in approximately one-fourth of neurons. When we tested the selectivity of the same neurons to individual half-lines, the preferred direction was more or less consistent with one or two components of the optimal angle stimuli. These results suggest that the selectivity of the neurons depends on both the combination of two components and the responses to individual components. Angle-selective V2 neurons are unlikely to be specific angle detectors, because the magnitude of their responses to the optimal angle was indistinguishable from that to the optimal half-lines. We suggest that the extraction of information of angles embedded within contour stimuli may start in area V2.

Attention in early visual processing engages the higher order, context dependent properties of neurons. Even at the earliest stages of visual cortical processing neurons play a role in intermediate level vision — contour integration and surface segmentation. The contextual influences mediating this process may be derived from long range connections within primary visual cortex (V1). These influences are subject to perceptual learning, and are strongly modulated by visuospatial attention, which is itself a learning dependent process. The attentional influences may involve interactions between feedback and horizontal connections in V1. V1 is therefore a dynamic and active processor, subject to top-down influences.

Brightness discrimination thresholds and facilitation by lateral interaction were measured in five human observers and two monkeys. The subjects judged the brightness of one of four peripherally seen lines against a reference. This experiment was performed both when the observer was cued to the position of the test line (focused attention) and when there was no cue (distributed attention). Discrimination was better with focused than with distributed attention. When the test line had a collinear flank, its brightness was enhanced; this enhancement was four times more prominent with distributed than with focused attention. After training, thresholds improved and collinear facilitation decreased under distributed but not under focused attention. The findings show that there are fewer benefits from contextual interaction once attention is directed toward a visual location, and that the attentional effects are subject to training.

Cells in adult primary visual cortex are capable of integrating information over much larger portions of the visual field than was originally thought. Moreover, their receptive field properties can be altered by the context within which local features are presented and by changes in visual experience. The substrate for both spatial integration and cortical plasticity is likely to be found in a plexus of long-range horizontal connections, formed by cortical pyramidal cells, which link cells within each cortical area over distances of 6-8 mm. The relationship between horizontal connections and cortical functional architecture suggests a role in visual segmentation and spatial integration. The distribution of lateral interactions within striate cortex was visualized with optical recording, and their functional consequences were explored by using comparable stimuli in human psychophysical experiments and in recordings from alert monkeys. They may represent the substrate for perceptual phenomena such as illusory contours, surface fill-in, and contour saliency. The dynamic nature of receptive field properties and cortical architecture has been seen over time scales ranging from seconds to months. One can induce a remapping of the topography of visual cortex by making focal binocular retinal lesions. Shorter-term plasticity of cortical receptive fields was observed following brief periods of visual stimulation. The mechanisms involved entailed, for the short-term changes, altering the effectiveness of existing cortical connections, and for the long-term changes, sprouting of axon collaterals and synaptogenesis. The mutability of cortical function implies a continual process of calibration and normalization of the perception of visual attributes that is dependent on sensory experience throughout adulthood and might further represent the mechanism of perceptual learning.

To explore the role of primary visual cortex in contour integration, we measured the contextual sensitivity of human contrast thresholds and of superficial layer complex cells in monkey V1. An observer's contrast detection was 40% improved by a second suprathreshold bar; the effect was decreased as the two bars were separated along their axis of orientation, were displaced from colinearity, and had their relative orientation changed. Recordings from V1 showed that 42% of complex cells demonstrated facilitation for a second bar outside their classical receptive fields with a similar dependency on relative location and orientation. Both effects were eliminated by an orthogonal line between the two iso-oriented lines. Multiple randomly placed and oriented lines in the receptive field surround often caused a reduction in a cell's response to an optimally oriented stimulus, but this inhibition could be eliminated by changing the orientation of a few of these elements to colinearity with the centrally located target.

Diabetes mellitus is a well known and important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure. A new model of Type 2 diabetes, Tsumura Suzuki Obese Diabetes (TSOD) mice, was introduced recently into the research field of diabetes. The cardiac functions of TSOD mice were studied in comparison with Tsumura Suzuki Non Obesity (TSNO, non-diabetic control) mice, for the first time. In vivo cardiovascular functions were measured by echocardiography and cardiac catheterization at 7, 12 and 18 months old. TSOD mice had no deterioration of cardiac function despite the long-term persistence of severe obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and hyperlipidemia, including high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol. No histopathological abnormalities were observed in the heart of TSOD mice, while several histological abnormalities were observed in the pancreas and kidney of TSOD mice. To investigate vascular endothelium function at 7 months old, intravenous injection of acetylcholine (ACh; 1, 3, 10 microg/kg)- and N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 50 mg/kg)-induced mean blood pressure (BP) changes were used. ACh decreased whereas L-NAME increased BP, and no significant differences in BP changes were observed between TSOD and TSNO mice. Moreover, ACh-induced relaxation of the thoracic aortae isolated from TSOD and TSNO mice with intact endothelium were not significantly different. These findings suggest that vascular endothelial cells in TSOD mice are not impaired. It was clearly demonstrated that despite obvious diabetes, cardiac functions of TSOD mice were not impaired even at 18 months old.

Experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM)-induced heart failure in rats is used to study the pathogenesis of heart failure. Based on a proteomic analysis of soluble (S) and membranous (M) fractions extracted from ventricles of rats with a stable chronic form of EAM-induced heart failure, we assessed changes in protein levels and their correlation to heart functions to gain insights into the pathogenesis and to explore new targets for the treatment of heart failure. Proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and silver stained spots were analyzed. In the S-fraction, 274+/-3 spots were detected in the normal (N)-group and 273+/-6 in the heart failure (HF)-group. In the HF-group, 26 of the spots were increased and 15 were decreased in intensity. In the M-fraction, 277+/-3 spots were detected in the N-group and 277+/-2 in the HF-group, with 20 spots increased and 10 decreased in intensity. We analyzed relationships between the expression of these proteins and 11 parameters of heart function, and found all the significantly changed spots to correlate with at least one of the parameters. We analyzed 49 spots that correlated with over 9 parameters of heart function using mass spectrometry, and identified 15 as proteins with increased expression including glucose regulated protein (GRP)78, an endoplasmic-stress related protein, and heat shock protein (HSP)90beta, a molecular chaperone, and 4 spots as proteins with decreased expression. It is suggested that in the heart failure model, GRP78 and HSP90beta play a role in the protection or deterioration of the heart and may be new targets for treatment.

Neuronal activity in the early visual cortex has been extensively studied from the standpoint of contour representation. On the other hand, representation of the interior of a surface surrounded by a contour is much less well understood. Several studies have identified neurons activated by a uniform surface covering their receptive fields, but their distribution within the cortex is not yet known. The aim of the present study was to obtain a better understanding of the distribution of such neurons in the visual cortex. Using optical imaging of intrinsic signals, we found that there are a group of surface-responsive regions located in area 18, along the area 17/18 border, that tend to overlap the singular points of the orientation-preference map. Extracellular recordings confirmed that neurons responsive to uniform plane stimuli are accumulated in these regions. Such neurons also existed outside the surface-responsive regions around the singular points. These results suggest that there exists a functional organization related to the representation of a uniform surface in the early visual cortex.

In the early stages of the visual cortex (areas 17 and 18), it is well known that neurons respond to bar and contour stimuli. However, several recent studies reported that some neurons in this stage respond to uniform plane stimuli that cover the classical receptive fields [1, 2]. In order to better understand the neuronal mechanisms underlying surface representation in the early visual stages, we explored the distribution of activation to the uniform plane stimuli by using optical imaging of intrinsic signals and extracellular recordings from areas 17 and 18 of anesthetized cats. We also intended to examine the distribution of such activities in relation to the orientation preference map in the same areas.

The response properties of cells in the primary visual cortex (V1) were measured while the animals directed their attention either to the position of the neuron's receptive field (RF), to a position away from the RF (focal attention), or to four locations in the visual field (distributed attention). Over the population, varying attentional state had no significant effect on the response to an isolated stimulus within the RF but had a large influence on the facilitatory effects of contextual lines. We propose that the attentional modulation of contextual effects represents a gating of long range horizontal connections within area V1 by feedback connections to V1 and that this gating provides a mechanism for shaping responses under attention to stimulus configuration.

Cells in the anterior part of the inferotemporal cortex (anterior IT) respond to moderately complex stimulus features of object images. To study dependency of their responses on contrast polarity of stimulus images, we selected cells with optimal stimuli that were defined only by shape and not related to texture or color, and examined effects of reversing the contrast of the image or removing it except for edges between dark and bright parts of the image ("outlining"). The contrast reversal produced a reduction of the response to the optimal stimulus by > 50% in 60% of tested cells; the outlining, in 70%. When the two transformations were considered together, 94% of the cells showed a reduction by > 50%. Effects of the transformations on shape selectivity were also studied by comparing responses to several different shapes each of whose contours were expressed in different ways. Statistically significant changes in relative effectiveness of the different shapes as a function of contour expression were observed in more than half of the cells. These results suggest that responses of individual cells in anterior IT carry information about contrast polarity as well as about shape.

The present study was performed to clarify whether or not structural plasticity of synaptic connections underlies classical conditioning mediated by the red nucleus (RN) in the cat. Conditioned forelimb flexion is established by pairing electrical conditioned stimuli (CS), applied to corticorubral fibers at the cerebral peduncle (CP), with a forelimb skin shock (the unconditioned stimulus, US), but not by applying the CS alone or by pairing the CS and US at random intervals. In our previous study, it was shown that the firing probability of rubrospinal neurons (RN neurons) in response to the CS was well correlated with acquisition of the conditioned forelimb flexion and that the primary site of neural change underlying establishment of the conditioned forelimb flexion was suggested to be at corticorubral synapses. In the present study, we investigated corticorubral excitatory postsynaptic potentials evoked by CP stimulation (CP-EPSPs), in order to identify the neuronal mechanism underlying establishment of classical conditioning. In normal cats, CP-EPSPs had a typical slow-rising phase, which has been attributed to the distal location of corticorubral synapses on the dendrites of RN neurons. In contrast, in animals that received paired conditioning, subsequent CP stimulation evoked potentials with a fast-rising time course. In control groups of cats that received CS alone, CS randomly paired with the US, or only the same surgical operations as the conditioned animals, most of the CP-EPSPs displayed slow-rising EPSPs that similar to those observed in normal cats. The mean time from onset to peak of the potentials in the conditioned animals was significantly shorter than that seen in other groups. Therefore, the appearance of a fast-rising potential correlates well with acquisition of the conditioned forelimb flexion. The amplitude of the fast-rising potential was gradually changed with stimulus intensity. It had a short onset latency following CP stimulation (0.9 ms), which was similar to that of the slow-rising EPSP in normal cats. It followed high-frequency stimulation up to 100 Hz. These results suggest that the newly appearing, fast-rising potential was a monosynaptically evoked EPSP. Fast-rising EPSPs were also induced by stimulation of the sensorimotor cortex (SM). Since the SM-EPSP was occluded by the CP-EPSP, the SM cortex is, at least in part, a likely source of fast-rising EPSPs. Fast-rising SM-EPSPs were also observed at the unitary level. The SM-EPSPs in the conditioned animals exhibited somatotopical representation in their cortical origin, as has been described in normal cats. The electrotonic length was calculated from the voltage transient responses to current steps injected into the RN neurons. There was no concomitant change in the electrotonic length following the classical conditioning. Furthermore, the fastrising EPSPs were often observed as if they were superposed on the slow-rising EPSPs that were observed in normal animals. These observations suggest that the appearance of fast-rising EPSPs is due to the formation of new corticorubral synapses on the somata or the proximal dendrites of the RN neurons, and not as a result of a reduction in the electrotonic length of the RN neurons. The present study provides further evidence that this type of structural plasticity of synaptic connections underlies establishment of the classically conditioned forelimb flexion.

At early stages of the mammalian visual cortex, neurons with similar stimulus selectivities are vertically arrayed through the thickness of the cortical sheet and clustered in patches or bands across the surface. This organization, referred to as a 'column', has been found with respect to one-dimensional stimulus parameters such as orientation of stimulus contours, eye dominance of visual inputs, and direction of stimulus motion. It is unclear, however, whether information with extremely high dimensions, such as visual shape, is organized in a similar columnar fashion or in a different manner in the brain. Here we report that the anterior inferotemporal area of the monkey cortex, the final station of the visual cortical stream crucial for object recognition, consists of columns, each containing cells responsive to similar visual features of objects.
