Search

The latest generation of Galactic-plane surveys is enhancing our ability to study the effects of galactic environment upon the process of star formation. We present the first data from CO Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey 2 (CHIMPS2). CHIMPS2 is a survey that will observe the Inner Galaxy, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), and a section of the Outer Galaxy in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $(J = 3\rightarrow2)$ emission with the Heterodyne Array Receiver Program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The first CHIMPS2 data presented here are a first look towards the CMZ in $^{12}$CO J = 3$\rightarrow$2 and cover $-3^{\circ}\leq\,\ell\,\leq\,5^{\circ}$ and $\mid$b$\mid \leq 0.5^{\circ}$ with angular resolution of 15 arcsec, velocity resolution of 1 km s$^{-1}$, and rms $\Delta T_A ^\ast =$ 0.58 K at these resolutions. Such high-resolution observations of the CMZ will be a valuable data set for future studies, whilst complementing the existing Galactic Plane surveys, such as SEDIGISM, the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane Survey, and ATLASGAL. In this paper, we discuss the survey plan, the current observations and data, as well as presenting position-position maps of the region. This paper presents a survey of microwave front-end receivers installed at radio telescopes throughout the World. This unprecedented analysis was conducted as part of a review of front-end developments for Italian radio telescopes, initiated by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics in 2016. Fifteen international radio telescopes have been selected to be representative of the instrumentation used for radio astronomical observations in the frequency domain from 300 MHz to 116 GHz. A comprehensive description of the existing receivers is presented and their characteristics are compared and discussed. The observing performances of the complete receiving chains are also presented. RX J0046.5$-$7308 is a shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We carried out new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2) observations toward the SNR using Mopra and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. We found eight molecular clouds (A-H) along the X-ray shell of the SNR. The typical cloud size and mass are $\sim$10-15 pc and $\sim$1000-3000 $M_{\odot}$, respectively. The X-ray shell is slightly deformed and has the brightest peak in the southwestern shell where two molecular clouds A and B are located. The four molecular clouds A, B, F, and G have high intensity ratios of $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2) / $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) $> 1.2$, which are not attributable to any identified internal infrared sources or high-mass stars. The HI cavity and its expanding motion are found toward the SNR, which are likely created by strong stellar winds from a massive progenitor. We suggest that the molecular clouds A-D, F, and G and HI clouds within the wind-blown cavity at $V_\mathrm{LSR} = 117.1$-122.5 km s$^{-1}$ are to be associated with the SNR. The X-ray spectroscopy reveals the dynamical age of $26000^{+1000}_{-2000}$ yr and the progenitor mass of $\gtrsim 30$ $M_{\odot}$, which is also consistent with the proposed scenario. We determine physical conditions of the giant molecular cloud LIRS 36A using the large velocity gradient analysis with archival datasets of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array; the kinematic temperature is $72^{+50}_{-37}$ K and the number density of molecular hydrogen is $1500^{+600}_{-300}$ cm$^{-3}$. We carried out new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2) observations of a N63A supernova remnant (SNR) from the LMC using ALMA and ASTE. We find three giant molecular clouds toward the northeast, east, and near the center of the SNR. Using the ALMA data, we spatially resolved clumpy molecular clouds embedded within the optical nebulae in both the shock-ionized and photoionized lobes discovered by previous H$\alpha$ and [S II] observations. The total mass of the molecular clouds is $\sim$$800$ $M_{\odot}$ for the shock-ionized region and $\sim$$1700$ $M_{\odot}$ for the photoionized region. Spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy reveals that the absorbing column densities toward the molecular clouds are $\sim$$1.5$-$6.0\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, which are $\sim$$1.5$-$15$ times less than the averaged interstellar proton column densities for each region. This means that the X-rays are produced not only behind the molecular clouds, but also in front of them. We conclude that the dense molecular clouds have been completely engulfed by the shock waves, but have still survived erosion owing to their high-density and short interacting time. The X-ray spectrum toward the gas clumps is well explained by an absorbed power-law or high-temperature plasma models in addition to the thermal plasma components, implying that the shock-cloud interaction is efficiently working for both the cases through the shock ionization and magnetic field amplification. If the hadronic gamma-ray is dominant in the GeV band, the total energy of cosmic-ray protons is calculated to be $\sim$$0.3$-$1.4\times10^{49}$ erg with the estimated ISM proton density of $\sim$$190\pm90$ cm$^{-3}$, containing both the shock-ionized gas and neutral atomic hydrogen., Comment: 18 pages, 4 tables, 8 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

The FUGIN CO survey with the Nobeyama 45-m Telescope revealed the 3D structure of a galactic shock wave in the tangential direction of the 4-kpc molecular arm. The shock front is located at G30.5+00.0+95 km/s on the up-stream (lower longitude) side of the star-forming complex W43 (G30.8-0.03), and composes a molecular bow shock (MBS) concave to W43, exhibiting an arc-shaped molecular ridge perpendicular to the galactic plane with width $\sim 0^\circ.1$ (10 pc) and vertical length $\sim 1^\circ \ (100\ {\rm pc})$. The MBS is coincident with the radio continuum bow of thermal origin, indicating association of ionized gas and similarity to a cometary bright-rimmed cloud. The up-stream edge of the bow is sharp with a growth width of $\sim 0.5$ pc indicative of shock front property. The velocity width is $\sim 10$ km/s, and the center velocity decreases by $\sim 15$ \kms from bottom to top of the bow. The total mass of molecular gas in MBS is estimated to be $\sim 1.2\times 10^6 <_\odot$ and ionized gas $\sim 2\times 10^4 M_\odot$. The vertical disk thickness increases step like at the MBS by $\sim 2$ times from lower to upper longitude, which indicates hydraulic-jump in the gaseous disk. We argue that the MBS was formed by the galactic shock compression of an accelerated flow in the spiral-arm potential encountering the W43 molecular complex. A bow-shock theory can well reproduce the bow morphology. We argue that molecular bows are common in galactic shock waves not only in the Galaxy but also in galaxies, where MBS are associated with giant cometary HII regions. We also analyzed the HI data in the same region to obtain a map of HI optical depth and molecular fraction. N103B is a Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We carried out new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2) and $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) observations using ASTE and ALMA. We have confirmed the existence of a giant molecular cloud (GMC) at $V_\mathrm{LSR}$ $\sim$245 km s$^{-1}$ towards the southeast of the SNR using ASTE $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2) data at an angular resolution of $\sim$25$"$ ($\sim$6 pc in the LMC). Using the ALMA $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) data, we have spatially resolved CO clouds along the southeastern edge of the SNR with an angular resolution of $\sim$1.8$"$ ($\sim$0.4 pc in the LMC). The molecular clouds show an expanding gas motion in the position-velocity diagram with an expansion velocity of $\sim5$ km s$^{-1}$. The spatial extent of the expanding shell is roughly similar to that of the SNR. We also find tiny molecular clumps in the directions of optical nebula knots. We present a possible scenario that N103B exploded in the wind-bubble formed by the accretion winds from the progenitor system, and is now interacting with the dense gas wall. We present an unbiased large-scale (9 deg$^2$) CN ($N$=1-0) and C$^{18}$O ($J$=1-0) survey of Cygnus-X conducted with the Nobeyama 45m Cygnus-X CO survey. CN and C$^{18}$O are detected in various objects towards the Cygnus-X North and South (e.g., DR17, DR18, DR21, DR22, DR23, and W75N). We find that CN/C$^{18}$O integrated intensity ratios are systematically different from region to region, and are especially enhanced in DR17 and DR18 which are irradiated by the nearby OB stars. This result suggests that CN/C$^{18}$O ratios are enhanced via photodissociation reactions. We investigate the relation between the CN/C$^{18}$O ratio and strength of the UV radiation field. As a result, we find that CN/C$^{18}$O ratios correlate with the far-UV intensities, $G_0$. We also find that CN/C$^{18}$O ratios decrease inside molecular clouds, where the interstellar UV radiation is reduced due to the interstellar dust extinction. We conclude that the CN/C$^{18}$O ratio is controlled by the UV radiation, and is a good probe of photon-dominated regions., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, ApJS accepted

We carried out $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) observations of the Galactic gamma-ray supernova remnant (SNR) Kesteven 79 using the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m radio telescope, which has an angular resolution of $\sim20$ arcsec. We identified molecular and atomic gas interacting with Kesteven 79 whose radial velocity is $\sim80$ km s$^{-1}$. The interacting molecular and atomic gases show good spatial correspondence with the X-ray and radio shells, which have an expanding motion with an expanding velocity of $\sim4$ km s$^{-1}$. The molecular gas associated with the radio and X-ray peaks also exhibits a high-intensity ratio of CO 3-2/1-0 $>$ 0.8, suggesting a kinematic temperature of $\sim24$ K, owing to heating by the supernova shock. We determined the kinematic distance to the SNR to be $\sim5.5$ kpc and the radius of the SNR to be $\sim8$ pc. The average interstellar proton density inside of the SNR is $\sim360$ cm$^{-3}$, of which atomic protons comprise only $\sim10$ $\%$. Assuming a hadronic origin for the gamma-ray emission, the total cosmic-ray proton energy above 1 GeV is estimated to be $\sim5 \times 10^{48}$ erg., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

The total solar fluxes at 1, 2, 3.75, and 9.4 GHz were observed continuously from 1957 to 1994 at Toyokawa, and from 1994 until now at Nobeyama, Japan with the current Nobeyama Radio Polarimeters. We examined the multi-frequency and long-term datasets, and found that not only the microwave solar flux but also its monthly standard deviation well indicates the long-term variation of solar activity. Furthermore, we found that the microwave spectra at the solar minima of Cycle 20~24 agree with each other. These results show that the average atmospheric structure above the upper chromosphere in the quiet Sun has not varied for half a century, and suggest that the energy input for atmospheric heating from the sub-photosphere to the corona has not changed in the quiet Sun despite significantly differing strengths of magnetic activity in the last five solar cycles., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present $Spitzer$/IRS mid-infrared spectral maps of the Galactic star-forming region M17 as well as IRSF/SIRIUS Br$\gamma$ and Nobeyama 45-m/FOREST $^{13}$CO ($J$=1--0) maps. The spectra show prominent features due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at wavelengths of 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, 12.0, 12.7, 13.5, and 14.2 $\mu$m. We find that the PAH emission features are bright in the region between the HII region traced by Br$\gamma$ and the molecular cloud traced by $^{13}$CO, supporting that the PAH emission originates mostly from photo-dissociation regions. Based on the spatially-resolved $Spitzer$/IRS maps, we examine spatial variations of the PAH properties in detail. As a result, we find that the interband ratio of PAH 7.7 $\mu$m/PAH 11.3 $\mu$m varies locally near M17SW, but rather independently of the distance from the OB stars in M17, suggesting that the degree of PAH ionization is mainly controlled by local conditions rather than the global UV environments determined by the OB stars in M17. We also find that the interband ratios of the PAH 12.0 $\mu$m, 12.7 $\mu$m, 13.5 $\mu$m, and 14.2 $\mu$m features to the PAH 11.3 $\mu$m feature are high near the M17 center, which suggests structural changes of PAHs through processing due to intense UV radiation, producing abundant edgy irregular PAHs near the M17 center., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, ApJ accepted

We have performed VLBI and single-dish monitoring of 22 GHz H$_{2}$O maser emission from the high mass young stellar object G353.273+0.641 with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) and Tomakamai 11-m radio telescope. Two maser flares have been detected, separated almost two years. Frequent VLBI monitoring has revealed that these flare activities have been accompanied by structural change of the prominent shock front traced by H2O maser alignments. We have detected only blue-shifted emissions and all maser features have been distributed within very small area of 200 $\times$ 200 au$^{2}$ in spite of wide velocity range (> 100 km s$^{-1}$). The light curve shows notably intermittent variation and suggests that the H$_{2}$O masers in G353.273+0.641 are excited by episodic radio jet. The time-scale of \sim2 yr and characteristic velocity of \sim500 km s$^{-1}$ also support this interpretation. Two isolated velocity components of C50 (-53 \pm 7 km s$^{-1}$) and C70 (-73 \pm 7 km s$^{-1}$) have shown synchronised linear acceleration of the flux weighted $V_{\rmn{LSR}}$ values (\sim-5 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$) during the flare phase. This can be converted to the lower-limit momentum rate of 1.1 \times 10$^{-3}$ M$_{\sun}$ km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. Maser properties are quite similar to that of IRAS 20126+4104 especially. This corroborates the previous suggestion that G353.273+0.641 is a candidate of high mass protostellar object. The possible pole-on geometry of disc-jet system can be suitable for direct imaging of the accretion disc in this case., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aims: We aim at deriving the excitation conditions of the interstellar gas as well as the local FUV intensities in the molecular cloud surrounding NGC 3603 to get a coherent picture of how the gas is energized by the central stars. Methods: The NANTEN2-4m submillimeter antenna is used to map the [CI] 1-0, 2-1 and CO 4-3, 7-6 lines in a 2' x 2' region around the young OB cluster NGC 3603 YC. These data are combined with C18O 2-1 data, HIRES-processed IRAS 60 and 100 micron maps of the FIR continuum, and Spitzer/IRAC maps. Results: The NANTEN2 observations show the presence of two molecular clumps located south-east and south-west of the cluster and confirm the overall structure already found by previous CS and C18O observations. We find a slight position offset of the peak intensity of CO and [CI], and the atomic carbon appears to be further extended compared to the molecular material. We used the HIRES far-infrared dust data to derive a map of the FUV field heating the dust. We constrain the FUV field to values of \chi = 3 - 6 \times 10^3 in units of the Draine field across the clouds. Approximately 0.2 to 0.3 % of the total FUV energy is re-emitted in the [CII] 158 {\mu}m cooling line observed by ISO. Applying LTE and escape probability calculations, we derive temperatures (TMM1 = 43 K, TMM2 = 47 K), column densities (N(MM1) = 0.9 \times 10^22 cm^-2, N(MM2) = 2.5 \times 10^22 cm^-2) and densities (n(MM1) = 3 \times 10^3 cm^-3, n(MM2) = 10^3 -10^4 cm^-3) for the two observed molecular clumps MM1 and MM2. Conclusions: The cluster is strongly interacting with the ambient molecular cloud, governing its structure and physical conditions. A stability analysis shows the existence of gravitationally collapsing gas clumps which should lead to star formation. We studied star formation activities in the molecular clouds in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We have utilized the second catalog of 272 molecular clouds obtained by NANTEN to compare the cloud distribution with signatures of massive star formation including stellar clusters, and optical and radio HII regions. We find that the molecular clouds are classified into three types according to the activities of massive star formation; Type I shows no signature of massive star formation, Type II is associated with relatively small HII region(s) and Type III with both HII region(s) and young stellar cluster(s). The radio continuum sources were used to confirm that Type I GMCs do not host optically hidden HII regions. These signatures of massive star formation show a good spatial correlation with the molecular clouds in a sense they are located within ~100 pc of the molecular clouds. Among possible ideas to explain the GMC Types, we favor that the Types indicate an evolutionary sequence; i.e., the youngest phase is Type I, followed by Type II and the last phase is Type III, where the most active star formation takes place leading to cloud dispersal. The number of the three types of GMCs should be proportional to the time scale of each evolutionary stage if a steady state of massive star and cluster formation is a good approximation. By adopting the time scale of the youngest stellar clusters, 10 Myrs, we roughly estimate the timescales of Types I, II and III to be 6 Myrs, 13 Myrs and 7 Myrs, respectively, corresponding to a lifetime of 20-30 Myrs for the GMCs with a mass above the completeness limit, 5 x 10^4 Msun., Comment: accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. 20 figures and 4 tables. We have made multi-epoch VLBI observations of H2O maser emission in the massive star forming region IRAS 06061+2151 with the Japanese VLBI network (JVN) from 2005 May to 2007 October. The detected maser features are distributed within an 1\arcsec$\times$1\arcsec (2000 au$\times$2000 au at the source position) around the ultra-compact H {\small\bf II} region seen in radio continuum emission. Their bipolar morphology and expanding motion traced through their relative proper motions indicate that they are excited by an energetic bipolar outflow. Our three-dimensional model fitting has shown that the maser kinematical structure in IRAS 06061+2151 is able to be explained by a biconical outflow with a large opening angle ($>$ 50\degr). The position angle of the flow major axis coincides very well with that of the large scale jet seen in 2.1$\:\mu\rmn{m}$ hydrogen emission. This maser geometry indicates the existence of dual structures composed of a collimated jet and a less collimated massive molecular flow. We have also detected a large velocity gradient in the southern maser group. This can be explained by a very small (on a scale of several tens of au) and clumpy (the density contrast by an order of magnitude or more) structure of the parental cloud. We have carried out sub-mm 12CO(J=3-2) observations of 6 giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with the ASTE 10m sub-mm telescope at a spatial resolution of 5 pc and very high sensitivity. We have identified 32 molecular clumps in the GMCs and revealed significant details of the warm and dense molecular gas with n(H2) $\sim$ 10$^{3-5}$ cm$^{-3}$ and Tkin $\sim$ 60 K. These data are combined with 12CO(J=1-0) and 13CO(J=1-0) results and compared with LVG calculations. We found that the ratio of 12CO(J=3-2) to 12CO(J=1-0) emission is sensitive to and is well correlated with the local Halpha flux. We interpret that differences of clump propeties represent an evolutionary sequence of GMCs in terms of density increase leading to star formation.Type I and II GMCs (starless GMCs and GMCs with HII regions only, respectively) are at the young phase of star formation where density does not yet become high enough to show active star formation and Type III GMCs (GMCs with HII regions and young star clusters) represents the later phase where the average density is increased and the GMCs are forming massive stars. The high kinetic temperature correlated with \Halpha flux suggests that FUV heating is dominant in the molecular gas of the LMC., Comment: 74 pages, including 41 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS
