Abstract

The use of natural dyes as textile dyes is increasingly in demand since public awareness of the dangers of synthetic dyes has been increasing. Natural dyes produce a weak color intensity and require repeated dyeing to produce the desired color. This paper studied the effect of chitosan and catechin on the intensity and protection of fabrics in natural dyes from Peristrophe bivalvis expressed by parameters of UV protection factor (UPF) and color difference values (ΔE). The effects were observed between chitosan treatment and a combination of chitosan and catechin treatment of dyed cotton fabric in various concentrations. Cotton fabric treatment was applied before and after the dyeing process, and a combination of both. As a result, as the concentration of chitosan and catechin increased, the color intensity increased, as evidenced by the increase in the ΔE value. The best UPF value was obtained by combining chitosan and catechin on cotton fabric with the concentration of chitosan and catechin, respectively, 15 g/L and 0.5 g/L in the treatment before and after dyeing in a UPF value of 7.22 and a color difference (ΔE) of 36.09. The best lightfastness was obtained by a combination treatment of chitosan and catechin, with the results increased to 3-4 (good). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Preparation of porous carbon as ethylene adsorbent by pyrolysis of extraction waste Mangosteen rinds

Abstract

Mangosteen rind is an important source of natural antioxidants. Due to the growing interest in extracting this anti cancer substances from the Mangosteen rind, the amount of this lignocellulosic residu has been generated significantly as byproduct. In this research, extraction-waste Mangosteen rind (EMP) was used as alternative precusor for production of carbon-based adsorbent for ethylene removal. Steam was used as activating agent and the effect of carbonization time and temperature on the development of pore structure were examined. Pyrolysis process was carried out by heating the Mangosteen rinds powder (180 μm - 355 μm) from ambient temperature up to carbonization temperature of 848 K and kept for 3 hours then followed by heating up to 1123 K and kept for 15 minutes under flowing N2 and steam. This process was repeated for several pyrolysis temperature (1053 K, 1073 K, 1083 K and 1103 K) and carbonization time (0 hours, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3,5 hours). The carbon obtained was characterized in terms of its pore structure and ethylene uptake capacity. The results show that porous carbon obtained from pyrolysis of extraction-waste Mangosteen rind can be characterized as mesoporous carbon. The highest surface area of 1080 m2/g was obtained from pyrolysis of extraction-waste Mangosteen rinds with carbonization time of 3.5 hours and pyrolysis temperature of 1123 K. Furthermore, the mesopore portion and the specific surface area increased with the increasing carbonization time. From the ethylene uptake experiment, it was noted that the ethylene adsorption capacity of EMPC is 40.12 cm3/g.

Abstract

Chemical functionalization is carried out on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNT) to improve its surface interaction when used for final application such as for drug carriers. This research compared the effectiveness of ultrasonic treatment and stirring in the functionalization process. Both methods were conducted at room temperature. The functionalization processes were performed by using two different solvents which are nitric acid and a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid (3:1). The result of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra shows the appearance of carboxyl group at 1730 cm−1 for the sonication with mixed acid. Acid contents were determined by Boehm titration and the results show that acid groups are present. Both analyses indicate that the –COOH group is successfully attached on SWCNT surface. The study on density functional theory (DFT) was used to support the experimental results. DFT results show that the increase in the carboxyl group number improves the stability of SWCNT. Abstract

Indonesia has high potential for biodiversity of flora as a natural dye. Noja leaf (Peristrophe bivalvis) has potential as a red natural dye. The major component of the extract of its leaf is phenoxazine. The influence of mordant type, mordant concentration, and dyeing process temperature on the performance of the dyeing process was studied. The dyeing performances of the dyeing process were appreciated by measuring the colour strength parameter (K/S). Optimization of the dyeing process was done with Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Colour fastness to sunlight, washing, and rubbing was performed. Dyeing with noja leaf extract was done on a water bath with variation of mordant type used was alum (potassium aluminium sulphate), ferrous sulphate and calcium oxide with variation concentration 5%, 10%, and 15 % of the weight of the fabric at temperature variations of 50, 60 and 70oC. The optimum condition of fabric dyed with noja leaf extract is achieved at 61oC using ferrous sulphate as mordant with 10.96% concentration yielding colour strength value (K/S) of 0.597. The results of the sunlight, washing, and rubbing fastness test indicate that the natural dye from the leaves of the leaves is quite good as a natural textile dye. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The application of Indigofera tinctoria as natural dyes in textile industries has its own limitation. Exposure to sunlight can promote color fading in the fabric because ultra violet (UV) rays contained in the sunlight can damage the chromophore group in dye structure, especially for natural dye which has less stability structure compared to the synthetic dyes. Nano ZnO/TiO2 photocatalyst is a semiconductor material which has band gap that proportional to the wavelength of UV rays. This property makes this material is suitable for UV absorber. This study aims to improve the resilience of Indigofera tinctoria dye towards UV rays by utilizing nano ZnO/TiO2 as an additive. Methods of this research include the manufacture of nano ZnO/TiO2 by sonication method carried out in atmospheric pressure at temperature of 30°C for 30 minutes. The obtained ZnO/TiO2 nanoparticle was diluted in ethanol and applied on Indigofera tinctoria colored cotton fabric using simple dipping method. The independent variables in this study were variation of ZnO/TiO2 weight ratio (20, 21 and 22%), time of sonication ZnO/TiO2 (10, 20 and 30 minutes), and concentration of ZnO/TiO2 applied on fabric (75, 150, and 300 ppm). ZnO/TiO2 nanoparticle was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Evaluation of dye degradation on Indigofera tinctoria dye fabric was done by color strength analysis. The data obtained was analyzed by Response Surface Method (RSM) assisted by minitab18 software. Optimum operation condition were found to be 20% ZnO in ZnO/TiO2, 30 minutes of sonication, and 300 ppm ZnO/TiO2. The results from this study showed that nano ZnO/TiO2 were successfully synthesized and could be a potential candidate as an additive to increase the color stability of the dye. Abstract

Increasing demand of energy forces human to develop new energy sources. Biogas comes as a reliable option of sustainable energy fulfilment. Biogas consists of methane and some impurities such as CO2 and H2S. CO2 removal from biogas guarantees an elevation of biogas heating value. CO2 removal can be achieved by integrated absorption-desorption process using certain absorbent. Regeneration of absorbent is a necessity to recover CO2 absorption capability of used absorbent. This paper focuses on the study of CO2 desorption from glycerol absorbent using N2 as stripping gas. Effect of desorption temperature and N2 flow rate is studied. Three neck flask equipped with water bath is filled with 750 mL of glycerol. Waterbath temperature is set at 40°C. Absorption starts with flowing 1 LPM gas mixture of 40% CO2 to absorbent through sparger. CO2 concentration of outlet gas is analyzed using gas chromatograph every 10 seconds. Gas flow is stopped when outlet CO2 concentration reaches inlet concentration. Desorption process is conducted as follows, 0.1 LPM nitrogen is flowed through sparger to absorber. Samples of outlet gas are taken at several time. Samples are analyzed with gas chromatograph. The same experiments are conducted for temperature variation of 60°C and 80°C and nitrogen flow rate variation of 0.2 LPM and 0.3 LPM. The model of batch desorption process by gas stripping is developed. Mass transfer coefficient was determined by curve fitting. Abstract

Pencemaran lingkungan yang ditimbulkan oleh limbah cair industri tahu di sentra industri tahu Desa Tempelsari, Kecamatan Kalikajar, Kabupaten Wonosobo sudah melebihi kadar maksimum yang diperbolehkan oleh Peraturan Daerah Propinsi Jawa Tengah Nomor 10 Tahun 2004 tentang Baku Mutu Air Limbah, yaitu pH 6,0 sampai dengan 9,0; BOD 150 mg/l; COD 275 mg/l dan TSS 100 mg/l. Data pengujian limbah cair tahu yang dilakukan di BBTKLPPM Yogyakarta dengan sampel limbah cair tahu dari Pabrik Tahu “Sari Barokah” adalah pH 6,7 , BOD 1250,1 mg/l, COD 3440 mg/l, TSS 383 mg/l. Dalam rangka menanggulangi masalah di atas, maka diperlukan Instalasi Pengolahan Air Limbah, untuk itu akan dilakukan pra rancangannya. Dengan melihat karakteristik air limbah tersebut di atas serta melihat kondisi geografis daerah Wonosobo maka dipilih pengolahan dengan reaktor UASB (Upflow Anaerob Sludge Blanket).Metoda pelaksanaan Pra-Rancangan IPAL dari Pabrik Tahu “ Sari Barokah” ini dimulai dengan mengetahui karakteristik limbahnya, menghitung debit air limbah yang dihasilkan, menentukan desain unit-unit pengolah limbahnya , menghitung dimensi unit pengolah limbah serta menghitung anggaran biaya pembuatan IPAL.Perhitungan neraca massa dari unit-unit pengolah limbah yang terdiri dari Bak Saringan Kasar, Bak Grit Chamber, Bak Ekualisasi, Reaktor UASB dan Septic Tank diperoleh Enfluent Limbah dengan kadar BOD 129,4 mg/l , COD 240 mg/l dan TSS 36 mg/l , sehingga telah memenuhi baku mutu limbah cair tahu. Dengan dimensi unit-unit pengolah limbahnya sebagai berikut : Bak saringan kasar panjang 0,6 m, lebar 0,6 m kedalaman 0,6 m. Bak grit chamber, panjang 0,9 m, lebar 0,0,45 m, lebar dasar 0,15m, kedalaman 0,63 m. Bak ekualisasi, panjang 3,8 m, lebar 1,8 m dan kedalaman 2,7 m. Reaktor UASB, tinggi 4,5 m, diameter 1,78 m, luas penampang 2,4 m2, luas separator gas 0,6 m2. Bak Septic Tank, panjang 4 m, lebar 2 m dan kedalaman 1,4 m. Pembuatan IPAL ini membutuhkan biaya sebesar Rp.17.568.360,00.

30. ANALISIS PELUANG PENGEMBANGAN INDUSTRI ARANG AKTIF DI KABUPATEN OGAN KOMERING ULU

Abstract

Nowadays, the need of activated charcoal as adsorbent and purification materials is increasing. In Ogan Komering Ulu regency has a lot of biomass waste which can be processed to be activated charcoal. Therefore this potency will be analysed comprehensively in order to develop the activated charcoal comodity.Based on field study in Ogan Komering Ulu regency, the potency of biomass waste as activated charcoal raw material can be analysed. Based on the field study at activated charcoal factory Palembang and Bogor, the data of activated charcoal process production and production cost can be collected. From the litrature study and the data collected of the field study, the opportunity to establish the activated charcoal factory in Ogan Komering Ulu regency can be investigated.The biomass waste in Ogan Komering Ulu consist of the wood residue in logged forest is 6.428 m3, the sawmills waste is 3.806 m3, the coconut shell is 75.506 tons, the palm shell is 15.520 tons, the rice husk is 69.103 tons. If the biomass waste above will be processed to be charcoal, therefore the big amount of charcoal from coconut shell is 22.652 tons. The activated charcoal from coconut shell has higher adsorptive capacity of iodine than other raw material. The analysis of supply and demand showed the value of market share was 96 %. Based on the assumption that activated charcoal factory will be operated for 10 years, to establish the activated charcoal factory need investment capital Rp.128.000.000,-. Based on the financial evaluation the profit will be Rp. 32.972.000,- every year. Pay back period after tax is 3 years 1 month, Net Present Value is (+) Rp. 20.230.196,-, Internal Rate of Return is 22 %, and Break Event Point is 52 %. Sensitivity analysis shows 10 % increasing raw material’s price, the Net Present Value will be positive by Rp. 11.981.048,- and 10 %, decreasing of product’s price, the Net Present Value will be negative by Rp 41.638.414,-, therefore the factory is more sensitive to the product’s price. Based on the research and evaluation, the activated charcoal factory is feasible.

32. Laju Reaksi Hidrolisis Herbisida Glifosat di Tanah Jenuh Air

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to find out the parameters of the hydrolysis reaction rate (k,,) and partition coefficien (Kr) of glyphosate herbicide in saturated soil system, to identify the variables affecting those parameters, and to develop the empirical equations corelating those parameters to the pertinent variables.The experimental work or physical simulation in laboratory was conducted in a batch reactor. The sterilized soil 5 gram put into a 1000 cm3 of Erlenmeyer glass and 500 cm3 of glyphosate solution with 8 g/1 concentration was added. The Erlenmeyer mouth was covered with plastic film and the entire Erlenmeyer surface was covered with aluminium foil to minimize vaporization and photolysis reaction. The solution was mixed continuously with magnetic stirrer. At the initial time and selected time intervals, 5 cm3 of the samples were taken with syringe. The samples were centrifuged and filtered, 1 cm3 of the filtrate were analyzed its glyphosate concentration with UV- VIS. The experiments were conducted for various soil types, and the empirical correlation between the hydrolysis reaction rate (k,,) and partition coefficien (Kr) with the affecting variables can be developed.Based on the laboratory data and the simulation of mathematical model, it could be concluded that the empirical correlation between the Kr and kh values with the affecting variables could be represented in the equations:Kr =11.035 (%organic matter) + 0.25 (%clay mineral) mL gramkh =1.0810 (%organic matter) + 1.5310-5 (%clay mineral) min-1

35. CO2 Absorption from Biogas by Glycerol: Conducted in Semi-Batch Bubble Column

Abstract

Biogas is a renewable energy source that has been developed recently. The main contents of Biogas itself are Methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) where Methane is the main component of biogas with CO2 as the highest impurities. The quality of biogas depends on the CO2 content, the lower CO2 levels, the higher biogas quality. Absorption is one of the methods to reduce CO2 level. The selections of absorbent and appropriate operating parameters are important factors in the CO2 absorption from biogas. This study aimed to find out the design parameters for CO2 absorption using glycerol that represented by the overall mass transfer coefficient (KLa) and Henry's constant (H). This study was conducted in semi-batch bubble column. Mixed gas was contacted with glycerol in a bubble column. The concentration of CO2 in the feed gas inlet and outlet columns were analysed by Gas Chromatograph. The variables observed in this study were superficial gas velocity and temperatures. The results showed that higher superficial gas velocity and lower temperature increased the rate of absorption process and the amount of CO2 absorbed.
