Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in semi-enclosed gulfs are influenced by physical and biochemical processes, which haven’t been well understood. This study aims to investigate the spatial distribution and vertical profiles of dissolved PAHs in the Beibu Gulf (BG) and adjacent waters of the South China Sea, along with hydrological, meteorological, and biochemical variables. Particularly relevant are the effects of atmospheric pressure, salinity, ammonium, chlorophyll-a, as well as riverine inputs (RI), sea currents, and upwelling. In surface seawater, the total concentrations of eight dissolved PAHs (∑8PAHs) were 7.76 ± 2.16 ng/L, with a distribution pattern of western Guangdong waters (WGWs) > BG > Qiongzhou Strait (QS). ∑8PAHs in the northern BG (9.10 ± 2.00 ng/L) was significantly higher than that in the southern BG (6.65 ± 1.54 ng/L) (p < 0.01), suggesting that local anthropogenic activities and unique environmental characteristics significantly influenced PAHs distribution. In water column, PAHs in BG displayed enrichment in surface and bottom but decreased in medium water, while those in WGWs and QS decreased with increasing depth. Source apportionment concluded that PAHs in QS and WGWs were primarily from petroleum sources, and PAHs in BG were mainly from coal combustion. RI, combined with circulation, coastal current, and intrusion of SCS water influenced the surface PAHs distribution in BG, with eddy impacts observed. Specifically, regarding the surface PAHs distribution, differences in atmospheric pressure may influence the air-sea exchange of PAHs, especially positively affecting 4-ring PAHs. Salinity factors further corroborated the contribution of RI to 3-ring PAHs, followed by the regulation of PAHs through biological pumps (ammonia and chlorophyll-a). Moreover, upwelling-induced biodegradation and resuspension affected the vertical distribution of PAHs. While most PAHs posed a negligible risk, coking-generated fluorene posed a moderate risk to ecosystems due to changes in the energy structure, warranting further investigation into its toxicological impacts.

Coastal estuaries and adjacent continental shelf seas constitute vital global carbon reservoirs, and the sources and transformations of organic carbon in these regions are crucial to global biogeochemical cycles and climate change. This study investigated the total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), black carbon (BC), and their stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ15NTN, δ13CTOC, δ13CBC) in the surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and its adjacent northern South China Sea (NSCS) aiming to assess the impact of human activities on organic carbon dynamics in these areas. Results showed that the highest TOC concentrations occurred in the inner PRE due to intense human activities, and decreased seaward. The west side of the PRE exhibited higher TOC levels than the east side, which was attributed to differences in hydrodynamic processes and human activities. The westward flow of the Pearl River diluted water, which carried terrestrial organic matter inputs due to the influence of the Coriolis effect and intense local human activities, was a primary contributor to higher TOC levels on the west side (terrestrial source). In contrast, increased productivity and intensive mariculture activities on the east side predominated as sources of organic matter (marine source). Similar to the TOC, BC and TN sources were mainly influenced by human activities. δ15NTN distribution shows that TN in the east side of PRE mainly originated from industrial wastewater input from the Pearl River, while in the east side TN was mainly from domestic sewage discharge. Additionally, BC sources have shifted from primarily biomass combustion in the 1990s to fossil fuel emissions presently. Isotopic analysis revealed that over 70% of BC originated from fossil fuel inputs and C3 plant combustion, highlighting the significant influence of human activities in the PRE and adjacent NSCS, and underscoring the need for effective management and protection of the eco-environment in these regions.

Concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr) in surface soils and sediments collected in 2008 from 37 sampling sites in the Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island were detected by atomic absorption spectrometry. The total contents of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr ranged, respectively, from 61.36 to 562.2 mg/kg, 0.52 to 1.95 mg/kg, 54.61 to 577.9 mg/kg, 0.04 to 3.76 mg/kg and 6.83 to 25.9 mg/kg in soils and from 58.55 to 498.3 mg/kg, 0.60 to 2.51 mg/kg, 56.22 to 345.9 mg/kg, 0.07 to 5.77 mg/kg and 7.76 to 39.5 mg/kg in sediments. The geo-accumulation index and the pollution load index were calculated to evaluate the environmental effects of heavy metal pollutants, Cu, Zn and Cd, in the study area. Soils and sediments from Ardley Island were found to be moderately polluted with the studied metals. Pearson’s correlation analysis and principal component analysis were applied to assess the distribution pattern and potential source of heavy metals. The results suggest that Cu, Zn and Cd in the study area originated from both the lithogenic sources and penguin guano, while Pb and Cr were probably derived from lithogenic sources.

Microplastics and heavy metals are the two main contaminants that are often found in aquatic environments and can lead to major issues for aquatic organisms. Polystyrene (PS) is a type of microplastic that is commonly found in aquatic environments. Hard clams are one of the organisms that are often used as a bioindicator of water pollution, and they can live in a certain salinity range. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of PS particles as heavy metal vectors in M. lusoria influenced by differences in salinity. The result showed that the highest increase in concentrations of all heavy metals in hard clams was found in those placed at higher salinities. The peripheral rivers of Dhaka city became highly polluted because of industrialization and urbanization to a greater extent in the last few decades. Thus, an attempt has been taken to measure 48 elements in water of the river Buriganga using the ICP-MS method for the first time. Accordingly, it could be the reference values for future research in Bangladesh. Out of the 48 elements, the following metals are given more attention because of their detrimental effects on living organisms and for discussing their aquatic chemistry in polluted water body: Be, Na, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ba, Hg, Pb, Bi and U. Results revealed that metals’ concentrations in water in the monsoon were less than that of the winter, however, Cr and Fe were found at below detection limits in the winter that is unexpected. Physicochemical parameters of the river water such as pH, dissolved oxygen play vital roles for hydrolysis reactions in the stagnant water body. Hydrolyzed products of metal ions having low values of solubility products ( K sp ), for example, iron(III)hydroxide, chromium(III)hydroxide, phase out through precipitation reactions. This study also detects and quantifies total concentrations of Hg and U in water of the river Buriganga for the first time. PCA and correlation matrix results provided potential sources of the relevant metals. Mechanisms of hydrolysis and precipitation reactions for metal ions in the polluted river water are also discussed.

The dietary supplementation of Haematococcus pluvialis is a natural, safe, and sustainable method for fish pigmentation. However, astaxanthin-rich H. pluvialis cysts have a poor effect in pigmenting salmonid flesh due to their rigid and thick cell wall. H. pluvialis thin-walled motile cells have recently attracted attention due to their potential advantages in maintaining compound stability, easy digestion, enhancing the bioavailability of carotenoids, and reducing production costs. This study aimed to investigate the effect of various nitrogen concentrations and light intensities on astaxanthin production in motile cells. We first investigated the effect of four different concentrations of nitrogen on astaxanthin accumulation in motile cells. According to the results, the motile cells had the highest astaxanthin concentration and content under the 0 N condition. Then, we compared the differences in astaxanthin production in motile cells under three different light intensities under 0 N conditions. The results showed that after four days of treatment, the protoplasts of the motile cells in the medium light (ML) group and the high light (HL) group had distinct granularity. The cell mortality rate in the HL group reached more than 15%, which was significantly higher than that in the low light (LL) and ML groups, indicating that high light intensity was not suitable for inducing motile cells to accumulate astaxanthin. There were no significant differences between the LL and ML groups in astaxanthin content, motile cells percentage, and cell mortality rate. Considering these indicators, we recommended inducing motile cells to produce astaxanthin under low light conditions because it is more economical in terms of electricity consumption. This study added to the knowledge that nitrogen and light affects the accumulation of astaxanthin in H. pluvialis motile cells. The results would help determine the optimal nitrogen and light conditions in astaxanthin production from motile cells.

Accumulating evidence indicates that aquatic organisms ingest microplastics (MPs), which may be a threat to essentially the entire global ecosystem. In current detection methods, even in cutting-edge nanoplastic technology, a major challenge for detecting microplastics (MPs) in aquatic organisms is removing complex biological matrices, such as fat. Herein we report combining HNO3 and H2O2 to form a binary digestive reagent system to determine MPs in biological tissue. With insights obtained from a Gaussian model, the adding manners of two reagents were discussed. Thus, in the final protocol, we mixed MPs and tissue with 20 mL of 30% (v/v) aqueous H2O2, 10 mL 0.5 M NaOH,1 mL 5 mM Fe2+, and 40 mL 11.5% (v/v) aqueous HNO3, in sequence at different time intervals. What’s more, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ultrasound—alone or together—were explored to solve the problem of removing fat residues and thus membrane blockage during filtration. In this paper, we used the O-PTIR microscope to verify the feasibility of the protocol. Compared with traditional detection methods, the O-PTIR spectroscopy can significantly improve the lateral resolution, down to sub and super-micrometer, and the ability to quickly obtain high spatial resolution far-field non-contact infrared spectra, which provide a novel method for qualitative analysis of MPs. In field applications, in our attempt, the fixed wavenumber image by O-PTIR can realize sub and super-micrometer MPs in situ, far-field measurements. The present method is highly efficient, and facilitates the identification of plastic particles.

Microplastics are regarded as ubiquitous pollutants in the ocean and have attracted worldwide concerns. Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), one of typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), is commonly detected in marine environment. Once coexisted, the microplastics and B[a]P may interact with each other and result in combined toxicity to organisms, and these remain to be systematically elucidated. Thus, this study aims to investigate (i) the effects of single micro-sized polystyrene (mPS), polyethylene terephthalate (mPET), and B[a]P on cell growth of Chaetoceros muelleri; and (ii) the interaction of microplastics and B[a]P, and their combined effects on C. muelleri. The results showed that both single microplastics and B[a]P at a high concentration of 150 μg/L inhibited the growth of C. muelleri. For single treatment of microplastics, stronger inhibition effects on microalgae was caused by mPET than that of mPS, with the highest IR of 25.23 and 11.17%, respectively. This may be attributed to the obvious surface roughness of mPET. By comparison, the combined effects of microplastics and B[a]P significantly inhibited the growth of C. muelleri as compared with the single treatment of B[a]P (P < 0.05). Synergistic effect was found in the combination of microplastics with B[a]P at high concentrations of 150 μg/L. Interestingly, the antagonistic effect on C. muelleri was observed in the combined treatment of microplastics and B[a]P at low concentrations of 10 μg/L. In addition, the pollutants reduced the content of photosynthetic pigments in microalgal cells. The SOD and MDA content of microalgae increased in the early stage of exposure to pollutants (e.g., Days 1 and 5), but decreased in the later stage (Day 15) compared with the control group. The decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity in single and composite systems may indicate that the antioxidative enzymatic system of microalgae has been inhibited or destroyed. This study will be helpful to further explore the ecological threats of microplastics and PAHs to the marine ecosystem.

The Fuyun Fault is a typical intraplate, slow-slipping fault, but has been repeatedly ruptured by surface wave magnitude (Ms) ≥ 8.0 earthquakes. The 11 August 1931 Ms 8.0 Fuyun earthquake resulted in more than 10,000 casualties in the sparsely populated Fuyun area. Cosmogenic 10Be dating of offset landforms produced by prehistoric Ms ≥ 8.0 earthquakes yields an average recurrence interval of 9,700 ± 3,300 years, much longer than previously estimated 2,000–4,500 years, clouding our understanding of the timing and recurrence behavior of past earthquakes originating from the Fuyun Fault. Reflection seismic data reveal widely distributed subaquatic faults in Yileimu Lake, implying high sensitivity of the lake sediments to paleoearthquakes originating from the Fuyun Fault. Two new long sediment cores (Y20A: 267 cm; Y20B: 890 cm) together with previously published two short cores (Y19: 71 cm; Y20: 31.5 cm) from the depocenter and nearshore zone of Yileimu Lake are used for stratigraphic correlations and analyses of sedimentary structures, grain-size distributions, magnetic susceptibility, elemental composition and carbon content. The mass-wasting deposits with underlying soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) in the Y20B core indicate six siliciclastic-enriched sandy sediment fluxes from earthquake-triggered landslides of granitic rocks, and isolated SSDS record three additional earthquake-induced in situ deformations. Turbidite-like deposits with sorting indices >3 and Si contents >700 counts per second (cps) are comparable to those of the seismic mass-wasting deposits, and are thus interpreted as seismites from earthquake-induced re-deposition of nearshore sediments. There are a total of 20 seismic events recorded by the Y20B core. Seismic intensity calculation results, combined with historical seismic data, provide potential magnitudes of Ms ≥ 8.0, Ms ≥ 7.0, and Ms ≥ 5.5 for the earthquake-triggered mass-wasting deposits, SSDS, and turbidite-like seismites, respectively, in Yileimu Lake, generally consistent with previously published magnitude thresholds. Radiocarbon dating and stratigraphic correlations constrain the timing of these past earthquakes to ∼28 cal kyr BP. This unique, long lacustrine paleoseismic record suggests a weakly periodic pattern with recurrence intervals between 2,317 and 7,830 years and an average of 5,303 years for potential Ms ≥ 8.0 earthquakes, and reveals an unprecedented high frequency of potential Ms ≥ 7.0 earthquakes originating from the Fuyun Fault in the last 5 kyr, demonstrating the urgent need for an improved assessment of seismic hazards and risks in the Fuyun Fault zone.

Riverine outflow is one of the major pathways for microplastic transportation to coastal environments. Research on the output of microplastics in small- or medium-sized rivers will help accurately understand the status of their marine loads. In this study, we used both trawling and pumping methods to collect microplastics of different sizes in the Jiulong River Estuary and Xiamen Bay. We found that the abundance of small microplastics (44 μm–5.0 mm) was at least 20 times higher than the large particles (0.33–5.0 mm). The abundance of the large particles ranges from 4.96 to 16.3 particles/m3, and that of the small particles ranged from 82.8 to 918 particles/m3. Granule was the dominant shape (>60%), and polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the most common components. The riverine flux of small microplastics (44 μm–5 mm, 472 ± 230 t/y) was at a medium level and was eight times greater than that of large particles (0.33–5.0 mm, 61.2 ± 2.6 t/y). The behavior of the large microplastics was relatively conservative, whose abundance had a significant correlation with salinity (R2 = 0.927) and was mainly influenced by physical factors. In contrast, results of statistical analysis revealed that more complicated factors influenced the small microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are two major types of pollutants that interact with each other, but they are poorly understood. Polystyrene (PS) is one type of MPs that is often detected in aquatic environments. In this study, we examined the adsorption capacity and release rate of heavy metals with respect to different particle sizes of PS, heavy metals, initial heavy metal concentrations, and salinities. Virgin (new) PS with diameters of 20, 50, 130, and 250 μm was used in this study, and four heavy metals (lead, cadmium, copper, and zinc) were used. The results showed that larger PS particle sizes adsorbed more heavy metals even though it took longer to achieve equilibrium adsorption. An increase in heavy metal concentration caused the adsorption capacity (μg g–1) of PS particles to also increase, but the adsorption rate (%) decreased. Increased salinity of the heavy metal solution resulted in a slower adsorption time and a lower adsorption capacity and release rate from the surface of PS particles. Different heavy metals also had different adsorption capacities. Pb was consistently more highly adsorbed by MPs, followed by Cu, Zn, and Cd. Larger PS sizes released heavy metals faster than smaller PS sizes, and the amounts of heavy metals released were higher. The heavy metal with the highest release rate was Cd, followed by Pb, Cu, and Zn. Finally, our findings highlight the interactions between PS and heavy metals and strongly support that PS particles can act as vectors for heavy metals in aquatic systems.

Although perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are ubiquitous in the Arctic, their dominant pathways to the Arctic remain unclear. Most modeling studies support major oceanic transport for PFASs in the Arctic seawater, but this conclusion contradicts the rapid response of PFASs to global emissions in some biota species. Sediments, which act as important PFAS sinks for seawater and potential PFAS source to the benthic food web, are important for interpreting the fate of PFASs in the Arctic. Here we investigate the occurrence of 9 PFASs in one core (1945–2014) and 29 surface sediments from the Bering Sea to the western Arctic. Total PFAS concentrations (0.06–1.73 ng/g dw) in surface sediments were dominated by perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorobutyl sulfonate (PFBS), with higher levels in the Bering Sea slope and the northeast Chukchi Sea. Historical trends in PFASs varied among individuals, with PFOS declining in the early 2000s while PFNA showing an increasing up-core trend. Analysis of positive matrix factorization model identified that the major PFAS sources in the sediment core were dominated by the atmospheric oxidation of consumer use of PFOS precursor-based products (45.0%), while the oceanic transport of fluoropolymer manufacture of polyvinylidene fluoride (mainly PFNA) exhibited an increasing trend over time, becoming dominant in surface sediments (42.8%). Besides, local input of possible aqueous fire-fighting foams (mainly PFOS and PFBS) also acted as an important source currently (30.1%) and historically (34.9%). Our study revealed that the pathways of PFASs in Arctic sediments varied greatly for individuals and the conclusion of PFOS originating from mainly atmospheric oxidation was different from seawater modeling results. This, together with the high possibility of sediments as direct source to Arctic food web (supported by similar PFAS compositions and temporal variations), help provide additional evidence regarding PFAS pathways to the Arctic.

Natural astaxanthin helps reduce the negative effects caused by oxidative stress and other related factors, thereby minimizing oxidative damage. Therefore, it has considerable potential and broad application prospects in human health and animal nutrition. Haematococcus pluvialis is considered to be the most promising cell factory for the production of natural astaxanthin. Previous studies have confirmed that nonmotile cells of H. pluvialis are more tolerant to high intensity of light than motile cells. Cultivating nonmotile cells as the dominant cell type in the red stage can significantly increase the overall astaxanthin productivity. However, we know very little about how to induce nonmotile cell formation. In this work, we first investigated the effect of phosphorus deficiency on the formation of nonmotile cells of H. pluvialis, and then investigated the effect of NaCl on the formation of nonmotile cells under the conditions of phosphorus deficiency. The results showed that, after three days of treatment with 0.1% NaCl under phosphorus deficiency, more than 80% of motile cells had been transformed into nonmotile cells. The work provides the most efficient method for the cultivation of H. pluvialis nonmotile cells so far, and it significantly improves the production of H. pluvialis astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin from H. pluvialis is an antioxidant and presents a promising application in medicine for human health. The two-stage strategy has been widely adopted to produce astaxanthin by the Haematococcus industry and research community. However, cell death and low astaxanthin productivity have seriously affected the stability of astaxanthin production. This study aims to test the effect of cell transformation strategies on the production of astaxanthin from H. pluvialis and determine the optimal initial biomass density (IBD) in the red stage. The experimental design is divided into two parts, one is the vegetative growth experiment and the other is the stress experiment. The results indicated that: (1) the cell transformation strategy of H. pluvialis can effectively reduce cell death occurred in the red stage and significantly increase the biomass and astaxanthin production. (2) Compared with the control group, the cell mortality rate of the red stage in the treatment group was reduced by up to 81.6%, and the biomass and astaxanthin production was increased by 1.63 times and 2.1 times, respectively. (3) The optimal IBD was determined to be 0.5, and the highest astaxanthin content can reach 38.02 ± 2.40 mg·g−1. Thus, this work sought to give useful information that will lead to an improved understanding of the cost-effective method of cultivation of H. pluvialis for natural astaxanthin. This will be profitable for algal and medicine industry players.

In order to assess the bioaccumulation of metals associated with gender, tissues, and their potential ecological risk, four species of fish were collected from the Yongshu Island in the Southern South China Sea. Metals and stable Pb isotopes in their tissues (muscle, gill, liver, intestine, and ovary) were determined. The concentrations of metals (mg/kg, dry weight) in these species were ND–21.60 (Cd), 1.21–4.87 (Cr), 0.42–22.4 (Cu), 1.01–51.8 (Mn), 0.30–3.28 (Ni), 6.04–1.29 × 103 (Zn), 14.89–1.40 × 103 (Fe), and 0.22–3.36 (Pb). In general, the liver and intestine absorbed more metals than the other tissues. Metals accumulation can be influenced by gender and feeding behavior and in fact, female fish and dietary exposure are more prone to accumulate metals. In addition, Pb isotopic ratios indicated that all species had significant biological fractionation, which may not make them good tracers for source identification. The metal concentrations of most samples were lower than the national standard values of the FAO (USA), which suggested that human consumption of these species may not cause health risks. However, since the surrounding areas are developing rapidly, the potential environmental risk of metals will intensify and should receive more attention.

Haematococcus pluvialis, as the best natural resource of astaxanthin, is widely used in nutraceuticals, aquaculture, and cosmetic industries. The purpose of this work was to compare the differences in astaxanthin accumulation between motile and nonmotile cells of H. pluvialis and to determine the relationship between the two cells and astaxanthin production. The experiment design was achieved by two different types of H. pluvialis cell and three different light intensities for an eight day induction period. The astaxanthin concentrations in nonmotile cell cultures were significantly increased compared to motile cell cultures. The increase of astaxanthin was closely associated with the enlargement of cell size, and the nonmotile cells were more conducive to the formation of large astaxanthin-rich cysts than motile cells. The cyst enlargement and astaxanthin accumulation of H. pluvialis were both affected by light intensity, and a general trend was that the higher the light intensity, the larger the cysts formed, and the larger the quantity of astaxanthin accumulated. In addition, the relatively low cell mortality rate in the nonmotile cell cultures indicated that the nonmotile cells have a stronger tolerance to photooxidative stress. We suggest that applying nonmotile cells as the major cell type of H. pluvialis to the induction period may help to enhance the content of astaxanthin and the stability of astaxanthin production.
