Abstract

Cluster compounds represent an important class of molecules that lie between the bulk metal and conventional chemistry based on single metal centres. They contain three to 150 metal atoms bonded together by covalent bonds in a polyhedral arrangement that does not necessarily conform to that found in the bulk metal. Their electronic structure has been interpreted using free-electron spherical harmonic models that relate the polyhedral features to the total number of valence electrons in the molecule. The occurrence of these molecules raises interesting questions regarding the transition from metallic to non-metallic properties.

Abstract

A theoretical investigation of the photooxidation of iron pentacarbonyl by dioxygen in an argon matrix, which generates several intermediates while producing the final product iron trioxide, uses the density functional theory technique to examine these intermediates. The geometry optimizations and electronic ground states of five oxoiron carbonyl intermediates, are analyzed.

Abstract

Metal clusters with trigonal-bipyramidal structures of the type (HgX 2 Pt3 u2-CO 3 L3) were studied using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray crystallographic analysis. These complexes were formed from the reaction of (Pt3 u2-CO 3 L3) with mercury halides. The results revealed that the complexes in solution existed as monomers but in the solid state they take a dimeric structure with two Hg2Pt3 units.
