Measuring the structure's displacement plays a very important role in ensuring the safe operation of railway bridges in general and urban railway bridges in particular. In Vietnam, traditional methods using high-precision mechanical gauges have been used to measure the displacement of railway bridges. However, these methods need a lot of effort in installation and traffic control during implementation. These methods are based on the static principle: The test loads are placed on the bridge structure, and then the structure's displacement is observed. The safety assessment and analysis results are guaranteed by multiplying the dynamic coefficients, leading to some assessments that may not be close to the actual exploitation of the bridge structure. Therefore, the current study presents a new solution for measuring the displacement of railway bridge structures. This method uses Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) sensors to record the continuous displacement of the structure during the time the train passes over the bridge. Through field measurements combined with a finite element analysis model, the research focuses on developing and applying LVDT sensors in urban railway bridge structure health monitoring. At the same time, the potential of developing this method in Vietnam in the future is evaluated.

The nonlinear buckling and postbuckling of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforcement composite (FG-CNTRC) plates resting on the nonlinear effect of elastic foundation under combined load including external pressure and axial compression loads with uniformly distributed temperature rises are fully investigated in this paper. The FG-CNTRC plates are reinforced by FG-CNTRC stiffeners and the plate-foundation interaction is modeled using a nonlinear model. The higher-order shear deformation plate theory with the geometrical nonlinearities of von Kármán is applied to establish the basic formulations. Additionally, by using the anisotropic higher-order shear deformation beam theory, a new smeared stiffener technique is successfully developed for FG-CNTRC stiffeners. Galerkin's method is used to achieve the equilibrium equation system in the nonlinear algebraic forms, and the critical load and postbuckling load–deflection curve expression are explicitly determined. The numerical investigations discuss the influences of FG-CNTRC stiffeners, hardening/softening nonlinear elastic foundation, uniformly distributed temperature rises, geometrical and material features on nonlinear stability of stiffened FG-CNTRC plates. The nonlinear vibration and dynamic responses of functionally graded graphene‐reinforced composite (FG‐GRC) laminated cylindrical, parabolic, and sinusoid panels stiffened by FG‐GRC stiffeners in the uniformly distributed temperature variation are presented in this paper. An improved smeared stiffener technique is used to model the added stiffnesses of stiffeners to the total stiffnesses of panels. The higher‐order shear deformation shell theory (HSDT) with the geometrical nonlinearities of von Kármán is applied to establish the governing formulations. The stress function form is estimated using the approximated technique for complex curvature panels. Lagrange function and Euler‐Lagrange equations are applied, and the Rayleigh dissipation function is taken into account to obtain the nonlinear equation of motion. Numerical examples are investigated using the Runge‐Kutta method to obtain the dynamic responses of panels, and the critical dynamic buckling loads of panels are considered using the Budiansky‐Roth criterion. Some significant remarks on the nonlinear vibration and dynamic buckling responses of three types of stiffened panels can be recognized from the numerical examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study aimed to identify the location of the optic foramen in relation to the anterior sphenoid sinus wall, which is essential information for surgeons in planning and performing endoscopic transnasal surgery. Methods: Computed tomography scans of 200 orbits from 100 adult patients with no abnormalities were examined. The results included the location of the optic foramen in relation to the anterior sphenoid sinus wall and the distance between them, as well as the distance from the optic foramen and the anterior sphenoid sinus wall to the carotid prominence in the posterior sphenoid sinus. Results: The optic foramen was anterior to the anterior sphenoid sinus wall in 48.5% of orbits, and posterior in the remaining 51.5%. The mean distance from the optic foramen to the anterior sphenoid sinus wall was 3.82± 1.25 mm. The mean distances from the optic foramen and the anterior sphenoid sinus wall to the carotid prominence were 7.67± 1.73 and 7.95± 2.53 mm, respectively. Conclusion: The optic foramen was anterior to the anterior wall of the sphenoid sinus in approximately half of the orbits examined in this study, and posterior in the remaining half. The mean distance from the optic foramen to the anterior sphenoid sinus wall of the sphenoid sinus was 3.82± 1.25 mm. Nonlinear buckling and postbuckling of longitudinally compressed carbon nanotube‐reinforced (CNTR) cylindrical shells stiffened by longitudinal or circumferential CNTR stiffeners in thermal environments surrounded by elastic medium are presented in the present study. Five linear distributions of CNT are considered for the shell‐stiffener structure system and they are modeled by innovation homogenization technique for CNTR stiffeners. Based on the classical Donnell thin shell theory with von Karman's nonlinearities and the Galerkin procedure, the governing equations can be built to analyze the critical buckling compression and postbuckling compression‐deflection and compression‐shortening behavior. The noticeable effects of volume fraction of CNTs, shell‐foundation interaction stiffnesses, uniformly distributed temperature, and geometric properties of stiffened cylindrical shells on the critical buckling compression and compression‐deflection and compression‐shortening postbuckling behaviors of stiffened CNTR cylindrical shells are obtained and remarked in numerical examinations. Nonlinear buckling analysis for honeycomb auxetic-core sandwich toroidal shell segments with CNT-reinforced face sheets surrounded by elastic foundations under the radial pressure is presented in this study. The basic equation system of shells is established based on the von Kármán–Donnell nonlinear shell theory, combined with Stein and McElman approximation. Meanwhile, the foundation-shell elastic interaction is simulated by the foundation model based on the Pasternak assumption. The Galerkin procedure is utilized to achieve the pre-buckling and post-buckling responses for the shell, from which the radially critical buckling load is determined. Numerical analysis shows the various influences of auxetic-core layer, CNT-reinforced face sheets, and elastic foundation on the pre-buckling and postbuckling behavior of sandwich shells with CNT reinforced face sheets.
