We studied the microstructure formation mechanisms of spinodal Fe–10%Cu alloys (mass%) fabricated using electron-beam powder bed fusion with various scanning speeds. Cross-correlation electron backscattered diffraction analysis was utilized to investigate the crack initiation and propagation mechanisms related to dislocation density and residual stress in the as-built Fe–10%Cu alloys. The as-built alloys with low scanning speeds have equiaxed microstructures with coarse grains, including Cu particles. As the scanning speed increased, the grain size and Cu particle size decreased, and micro-cracks initiated at the edge of lack-of-fusion defects and then grew along the grain boundary parallel to the built direction (BD). In addition, coarse Fe3O4 particles formed on the boundary caused a decrease in thermal conductivity and tensile strength. A strong compressive residual stress parallel to the BD acts as a driving force for micro-crack propagation. The rapid cooling rate enhances local dislocation density, and lattice rotation also causes micro-crack growth, thereby deteriorating mechanical and thermal properties. Therefore, the scanning speeds should be controlled below 2000 mm/s for good strength and superior conductivity of the spinodal Fe–Cu alloy.

We report 850 μ m continuum polarization observations toward the filamentary high-mass star-forming region NGC 2264, taken as part of the B -fields In STar forming Regions Observations large program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data reveal a well-structured nonuniform magnetic field in the NGC 2264C and 2264D regions with a prevailing orientation around 30° from north to east. Field strength estimates and a virial analysis of the major clumps indicate that NGC 2264C is globally dominated by gravity, while in 2264D, magnetic, gravitational, and kinetic energies are roughly balanced. We present an analysis scheme that utilizes the locally resolved magnetic field structures, together with the locally measured gravitational vector field and the extracted filamentary network. From this, we infer statistical trends showing that this network consists of two main groups of filaments oriented approximately perpendicular to one another. Additionally, gravity shows one dominating converging direction that is roughly perpendicular to one of the filament orientations, which is suggestive of mass accretion along this direction. Beyond these statistical trends, we identify two types of filaments. The type I filament is perpendicular to the magnetic field with local gravity transitioning from parallel to perpendicular to the magnetic field from the outside to the filament ridge. The type II filament is parallel to the magnetic field and local gravity. We interpret these two types of filaments as originating from the competition between radial collapsing, driven by filament self-gravity, and longitudinal collapsing, driven by the region's global gravity.

Cerium is a rare-earth metal commonly used as a dopant in various metal oxides to enhance their performances or provide optoelectronic properties. Cerium oxide (ceria) is particularly valuable owing to its unique properties and applications in various fields, such as biomedical research, photovoltaics, and industrial catalytic processes. This review focuses on the use of cerium and ceria doping in the synthesis of SiO2 and ZnO. Studies have shown that Ce-doped SiO2 thin films exhibit luminescence properties and proton shielding capabilities, and that Ce-doped ZnO has potential applications in gas sensors. In this review, we highlight the potential for controlling the luminescence and optical characteristics of these materials via cerium doping, opening up possibilities for various technological advancements and potential applications of cosmic ray shielding in space photovoltaics.

Blood pressure measurement is required to monitor the cardiovascular state of a person, and it is commonly conducted in a noninvasive way using oscillometry-based blood pressure monitors (BPM). Blood pressure can be estimated by analyzing the oscillometric waveform (OMW) in the BPM, and many methods have been examined to increase their estimation accuracy. In this study, we proposed a new method that enhances estimation accuracy and requires no external user information, such as age and gender, in the test phase. In the method, the entire OMW was considered as an input to reduce information loss via feature extraction, and convolutional neural networks were utilized to effectively analyze the high-dimensional input. Additionally, the proposed method included a novel ensemble method to further increase the estimation accuracy. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated and compared with other studies via subject-independent tests considering real situations in which it is difficult to obtain preliminary information on a test subject. Data from 64 subjects were used in the test. The mean absolute error of the proposed method was 3.12 and 3.98 mmHg for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively, which was superior to those reported in other studies conducted in similar conditions. Individuals can measure their blood pressure with higher precision using the proposed method with improved estimation performance. This can aid in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Most stars form in multiple-star systems. For a better understanding of their formation processes, it is important to resolve the individual protostellar components and the surrounding envelope and disk material at the earliest possible formation epoch, because the formation history can be lost in a few orbital timescales. Here we present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observational results of a young multiple protostellar system, IRAS 04239+2436, where three well-developed large spiral arms were detected in the shocked SO emission. Along the most conspicuous arm, the accretion streamer was also detected in the SO _2 emission. The observational results are complemented by numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulations, where those large arms only appear in magnetically weakened clouds. Numerical simulations also suggest that the large triple spiral arms are the result of gravitational interactions between compact triple protostars and the turbulent infalling envelope.

We present observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μ m from the L43 molecular cloud, which sits in the Ophiuchus cloud complex. The data were taken using SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as a part of the BISTRO large program. L43 is a dense ( ${N}_{{{\rm{H}}}_{2}}\sim {10}^{22}$ –10 ^23 cm ^−2 ) complex molecular cloud with a submillimeter-bright starless core and two protostellar sources. There appears to be an evolutionary gradient along the isolated filament that L43 is embedded within, with the most evolved source closest to the Sco OB2 association. One of the protostars drives a CO outflow that has created a cavity to the southeast. We see a magnetic field that appears to be aligned with the cavity walls of the outflow, suggesting interaction with the outflow. We also find a magnetic field strength of up to ∼160 ± 30 μ G in the main starless core and up to ∼90 ± 40 μ G in the more diffuse, extended region. These field strengths give magnetically super- and subcritical values, respectively, and both are found to be roughly trans-Alfvénic. We also present a new method of data reduction for these denser but fainter objects like starless cores.

Models of the protostellar source, B335, are developed using axisymmetric three-dimensional models to resolve conflicts found in one-dimensional models. The models are constrained by a large number of observations, including ALMA, Herschel, and Spitzer data. Observations of the protostellar source B335 with ALMA show redshifted absorption against a central continuum source indicative of infall in the HCO ^+ and HCN J = 4 → 3 transitions. The data are combined with a new estimate of the distance to provide strong constraints to three-dimensional radiative transfer models including a rotating, infalling envelope, outflow cavities, and a very small disk. The models favor ages since the initiation of collapse between 3 × 10 ^4 and 4 × 10 ^4 yr for both the continuum and the lines, resolving a conflict found in one-dimensional models. The models underpredict the continuum emission seen by ALMA, suggesting an additional component such as a pseudo-disk. The best-fitting model is used to convert variations in the 4.5 μ m flux in recent years into a model for a variation of a factor of 5–7 in luminosity over the last 8 yr.

We study the H ii regions associated with the NGC 6334 molecular cloud observed in the submillimeter and taken as part of the B -fields In STar-forming Region Observations Survey. In particular, we investigate the polarization patterns and magnetic field morphologies associated with these H ii regions. Through polarization pattern and pressure calculation analyses, several of these bubbles indicate that the gas and magnetic field lines have been pushed away from the bubble, toward an almost tangential (to the bubble) magnetic field morphology. In the densest part of NGC 6334, where the magnetic field morphology is similar to an hourglass, the polarization observations do not exhibit observable impact from H ii regions. We detect two nested radial polarization patterns in a bubble to the south of NGC 6334 that correspond to the previously observed bipolar structure in this bubble. Finally, using the results of this study, we present steps (incorporating computer vision; circular Hough transform) that can be used in future studies to identify bubbles that have physically impacted magnetic field lines.

We present BISTRO Survey 850 μ m dust emission polarization observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect nine of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarization, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field dominated to being matter dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 yr.

Support vector machines (SVMs) utilize hyper-parameters for classification. Model selection (MS) is an essential step in the construction of the SVM classifier as it involves the identification of the appropriate parameters. Several selection criteria have been proposed for MS, but their usefulness is limited for physiological data exhibiting inter-subject variance (ISV) that makes different characteristics between training and test data. To identify an effective solution for the constraint, this study considered a leave-one-subject-out cross validation-based selection criterion (LSSC) with six well-known selection criteria and compared their effectiveness. Nine classification problems were examined for the comparison, and the MS results of each selection criterion were obtained and analyzed. The results showed that the SVM model selected by the LSSC yielded the highest average classification accuracy among all selection criteria in the nine problems. The average accuracy was 2.96% higher than that obtained with the conventional K-fold cross validation-based selection criterion. In addition, the advantage of the LSSC was more evident for data with larger ISV. Thus, the results of this study can help optimize SVM classifiers for physiological data and are expected to be useful for the analysis of physiological data to develop various medical decision systems.

A concise and expeditious approach to the total synthesis of broussonone A, a p-quinol natural compound, has been developed. The key features of the synthesis include the Grubbs II catalyst mediated cross metathesis of two aromatic subunits, and a chemoselective oxidative dearomatizationin the presence of two phenol moieties. Especially, optimization associated with the CM reaction of ortho-alkoxystyrenes was also studied, which are known to be ineffective for Ru-catalyzed metathesis reactions under conventional reaction conditions because ortho-alkoxy group could coordinate to the ruthenium center, resulting in the potential complication of catalyst inhibition.

This paper presents a robust continuous control set model predictive control (CCS-MPC) method to control the output voltage of a three-phase inverter in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). A robust disturbance observer (DOB) is proposed to estimate the load current of the three-phase UPS without a steady-state error, taking the effect of model uncertainties into account. A CCS-MPC is designed using the DOB for reference voltage tracking purpose, and input constraints are considered in the controller design to calculate the optimal control input. Model uncertainties are defined using polytopic uncertainty class, and a linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization method is used to compute the optimal observer gain matrix. Another robust controller (RC) is designed based on the DOB and compared with CCS-MPC. The effectiveness of the proposed method (the DOB based CCS-MPC) is evaluated for resistive, inductive, and nonlinear loads then compared with other control methods using a three-phase 5-KVA laboratory experiment UPS system.

We introduce a technical approach for reducing three-dimensional infrared (IR) spectroscopic data generated by integral field spectroscopy or slit-scanning observations. The first part of data reduction using IRAF presents a guideline for processing spectral images from long-slit IR spectroscopy. Multichannel image reconstruction, Image Analysis and Display (MIRIAD) is used in the later part to construct and analyze the data cubes which contain spatial and kinematic information of the objects. This technic has been applied to a sample data set of diffuse 2.1218 μm H2 1-0 S(1) emission features observed by slit-scanning around Sgr A East in the Galactic center. Details of image processing for the high-dispersion infrared data are described to suggest a sequence of contamination cleaning and distortion correction. Practical solutions for handling data cubes are presented for survey observations with various configurations of slit positioning.

Electrocardiograms (ECGs) can be conveniently obtained using capacitive ECG sensors. However, motion noise in measured ECGs can degrade R peak detection. To reduce noise, properties of reference signal and ECG measured by the sensors are analyzed and a new method of active noise cancellation (ANC) is proposed in this study. In the proposed algorithm, the original ECG signal at QRS interval is regarded as impulsive noise because the adaptive filter updates its weight as if impulsive noise is added. As the proposed algorithm does not affect impulsive noise, the original signal is not reduced during ANC. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can conserve the power of the original signal within the QRS interval and reduce only the power of noise at other intervals. The proposed algorithm was verified through comparisons with recent research using data from both indoor and outdoor experiments. The proposed algorithm will benefit a noise reduction of noisy biomedical signal measured from sensors.

Non-intrusive electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring has many advantages: easy to measure and apply in daily life. However, motion noise in the measured signal is the major problem of non-intrusive measurement. This paper proposes a method to reduce the noise and to detect the R peaks of ECG in a stable manner in a sitting arrangement using non-intrusive sensors. The method utilizes two capacitive ECG sensors (cECGs) to measure ECG, and another two cECGs located adjacent to the sensors for ECG are added to obtain the information on motion. Then, active noise cancellation technique and the motion information are used to reduce motion noise. To verify the proposed method, ECG was measured indoors and during driving, and the accuracy of the detected R peaks was compared. After applying the method, the sum of sensitivity and positive predictivity increased 8.39% on average and 26.26% maximally in the data. Based on the results, it was confirmed that the motion noise was reduced and that more reliable R peak positions could be obtained by the proposed method. The robustness of the new ECG measurement method will elicit benefits to various health care systems that require noninvasive heart rate or heart rate variability measurements.
