Objective Yellow Korean native chicken (KNC-Y) is one of the five pure Korean indigenous chicken breeds that were restored through a government project in 1992. KNC-Y is recognized for its superior egg production performance compared to other KNC lines. In this study, we performed runs of homozygosity (ROH) analysis to discover selection signatures associated with egg production traits in the KNC-Y population. Methods A total of 675 DNA samples from KNC-Y were genotyped to generate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data using custom 60K Affymetrix SNP chips. ROH analysis was performed using PLINK software, with predefined parameters set for the analysis. The threshold of ROH island was defined as the top 1% frequency of SNPs withing the ROH among the population. Results In the KNC-Y population, a total of 29,958 runs of homozygosity (ROH) fragments were identified. The average total length of ROH was 120.84 Mb, with each ROH fragment having an average length of 2.71 Mb. The calculated ROH-based inbreeding coefficient (FROH) was 0.13. Furthermore, we revealed the presence of ROH islands on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 11. Within the identified regions, a total of 111 genes were annotated, and among them were genes related to economic traits, including PRMT3, ANO5, HDAC4, LSS, PLA2G4A, and PTGS2. Most of the overlapping quantitative trait locus regions with ROH islands were found to be associated with production traits. Conclusion This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of ROH in the KNC-Y population. Notably, among the findings, the PTGS2 gene is believed to play a crucial role in influencing the laying performance of KNC-Y.

Objective Carnosine and anserine affect the meat flavor. The contents of carnosine and anserine in meat are affected by genetic and environmental factors. This study aimed to discover the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the histamine-N-methyl transferase (HNMT) and histamine-N-methyl transferase-like (HNMT-like) genes and to associate them with the content of carnosine and anserine in Korean native chicken-red brown line (KNC-R). Methods This study used a total of 384 birds (males, n = 192; females, n = 192) aged 10 weeks old, for genotyping HNMT and HNMT-like genes. One synonymous SNP (rs29009298C/T) of the HNMT gene was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) methods whereas four missense SNPs (rs734406537G/A; rs736514667A/G; rs15881680G/A and rs316765035T/C) of the HNMT gene, and one missense SNP rs737657949A/C of the HNMT-like gene were genotyped by PCR allele competitive extension (PACE) genotyping technology. Objective The analysis of runs of homozygosity (ROH) has been applied to assess the level of inbreeding and identify selection signatures in various livestock species. The objectives of this study were to characterize the ROH pattern, estimate the rate of inbreeding, and identify signatures of selection in the red-brown Korean native chickens. Methods The Illumina 60K single nucleotide polymorphism chip data of 651 chickens was used in the analysis. Runs of homozygosity were analysed using the PLINK v1.9 software. Inbreeding coefficients were estimated using the GCTA software and their correlations were examined. Genomic regions with high levels of ROH were explored to identify selection signatures. Results A total of 32,176 ROH segments were detected in this study. The majority of the ROH segments were shorter than 4 Mb. The average ROH inbreeding coefficients (FROH) varied with the length of ROH segments. The means of inbreeding coefficients calculated from different methods were also variable. The correlations between different inbreeding coefficients were positive and highly variable (r = 0.18–1). Five ROH islands harbouring important quantitative trait loci were identified. Conclusion This study assessed the level of inbreeding and patterns of homozygosity in Red-brown native Korean chickens. The results of this study suggest that the level of recent inbreeding is low which indicates substantial progress in the conservation of red-brown Korean native chickens. Objective The major histocompatibility complex in chicken demonstrates a great range of variations within varities, breeds, populations and that can eventually influence their immuneresponses. The preset study was conducted to understand the major histocompatibility complex-B (MHC-B) variability in five major populations of Bangladesh native chicken: Aseel, Hilly, Junglefowl, Non-descript Deshi, and Naked Neck. Methods These five major populations of Bangladesh native chicken were analyzed with a subset of 89 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the high-density MHC-B SNP panel and Kompetitive Allele-Specific polymerase chain reaction genotyping was applied. To explore haplotype diversity within these populations, the results were analyzed both manually and computationally using PHASE 2.1 program. The phylogenetic investigations were also performed using MrBayes program. Results A total of 136 unique haplotypes were identified within these five Bangladesh chicken populations, and only one was shared (between Hilly and Naked Neck). Phylogenetic analysis showed no distinct haplotype clustering among the five populations, although they were shared in distinct clades; notably, the first clade lacked Naked Neck haplotypes. Conclusion The present study discovered a set of unique MHC-B haplotypes in Bangladesh chickens that could possibly cause varied immune reponses. However, further investigations are required to evaluate their relationships with global chicken populations.

Abstract Targeting neovascularization in glioblastoma (GBM) is hampered by poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms and unclear linkages to tumour molecular landscapes. Here we report that different molecular subtypes of human glioma stem cells (GSC) trigger distinct endothelial responses involving either angiogenic or circumferential vascular growth (vasectasia). The latter process is selectively triggered by mesenchymal (but not proneural) GSCs and is mediated by a subset of extracellular vesicles (EVs) able to transfer EGFR/EGFRvIII transcript to endothelial cells. Inhibition of the expression and phosphorylation of EGFR in endothelial cells, either pharmacologically (Dacomitinib) or genetically (gene editing), abolishes their EV responses in vitro and disrupts vasectasia in vivo. Therapeutic inhibition of EGFR markedly extends anticancer effects of VEGF blockade in mice, coupled with abrogation of vasectasia and prolonged survival. Thus, vasectasia driven by intercellular transfer of oncogenic EGFR may represent a new therapeutic target in a subset of GBMs.

ABSTRACT: Histidine-containing dipeptides (HCDs), such as anserine and carnosine, are enormously beneficial to human health and contribute to the meat flavor in chickens. Meat quality traits, including flavor, are polygenic traits with medium to high heritability. Polygenic traits can be improved through a better understanding of their genetic mechanisms. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) constitute an effective genomic tool to identify the significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and potential candidate genes related to various traits of interest in chickens. This study identified potential candidate genes influencing the anserine and carnosine contents in chicken meat through GWAS. We performed GWAS of anserine and carnosine using the Illumina chicken 60K SNP chip (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA) in 637 Korean native chicken-red-brown line (KNC-R) birds consisting of 228 males and 409 females. The contents of anserine and carnosine in breast meat of KNC-R chickens were investigated. The mean value of the anserine and carnosine are 29.12 mM/g and 10.69 mM/g respectively. The genomic heritabilities were moderate (0.24) for anserine and high (0.43) for carnosine contents. Four and nine SNPs were significantly (P < 0.05) associated with anserine and carnosine, respectively. Based on the GWAS result, the 30.6 to 31.9 Mb region on chicken chromosome 7 was commonly associated with both anserine and carnosine. Through the functional annotation analysis, we identified HNMT and HNMT-like genes as potential candidate genes associated with both anserine and carnosine. The results presented here will contribute to the ongoing improvement of meat quality to satisfy current consumer demands, which are based on healthier, better-flavored, and higher-quality chicken meat.

Recent advances in the metaverse have revolutionized the way services are experienced, creating a virtual world that seamlessly blends real-life and digital experiences. While research on metaverse services has traditionally focused on technological advancements, recent efforts emphasize the need for a customer-oriented approach to evaluating service quality. However, few studies have explored this customer-oriented approach. To address this gap, this paper identifies and prioritizes nine service features that significantly influence customer satisfaction in metaverse services from a customer-oriented perspective. In particular, this study analyzed 437,527 online customer reviews of Roblox, Bitmoji, and VRchat by employing text mining and machine learning algorithms, such as topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and logistic regression. As a result, the ‘co-experience’ feature emerges as a crucial factor, closely aligned with user objectives when engaging with metaverse services. These findings provide valuable insights for service managers to enhance their offerings effectively, positioning them favorably in the evolving metaverse landscape.

Abstract Studying extreme ideas in routine choices and discussions is of utmost importance to understand the increasing polarization in society. In this study, we focus on understanding the generation and influence of extreme ideas in routine conversations which we label “eccentric” ideas. The eccentricity of any idea is defined as the deviation of that idea from the norm of the social neighborhood. We collected and analyzed data from two sources of different nature: public social media and online experiments in a controlled environment. We compared the popularity of ideas against their eccentricity to understand individuals’ fascination towards eccentricity. We found that more eccentric ideas have a higher probability of getting a greater number of “likes”. Additionally, we demonstrate that the social neighborhood of an individual conceals eccentricity changes in one’s own opinions and facilitates generation of eccentric ideas at a collective level.

Genetic diversity analysis is crucial for maintaining and managing genetic resources. Several studies have examined the genetic diversity of Korean domestic chicken (KDC) populations using microsatellite markers, but it is difficult to capture the characteristics of the whole genome in this manner. Hence, this study analyzed the genetic diversity of several KDC populations using high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype data. We examined 935 birds from 21 KDC populations, including indigenous and adapted Korean native chicken (KNC), Hyunin and Jeju KDC, and Hanhyup commercial KDC populations. A total of 212,420 SNPs of 21 KDC populations were used for calculating genetic distances and fixation index, and for ADMIXTURE analysis. As a result of the analysis, the indigenous KNC groups were genetically closer and more fixed than the other groups. Furthermore, Hyunin and Jeju KDC were similar to the indigenous KNC. In comparison, adapted KNC and Hanhyup KDC populations derived from the same original species were genetically close to each other, but had different genetic structures from the others. In conclusion, this study suggests that continuous evaluation and management are required to prevent a loss of genetic diversity in each group. Basic genetic information is provided that can be used to improve breeds quickly by utilizing the various characteristics of native chickens.

Objective This study aimed to identify the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the dual-specificity phosphatase 8 (DUSP8) and insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) genes and to explore their effects on inosine-5′-monophosphate (IMP), inosine, and hypoxanthine contents in Korean native chicken -red-brown line (KNC-R Line). Methods A total sample of 284 (males, n = 127; females n = 157) and 230 (males, n = 106; females, n = 124) aged of 10 weeks old KNC-R line was used for genotyping of DUSP8 and IGF2 genes, respectively. One SNP (rs313443014 C>T) in DUSP8 gene and two SNPs (rs315806609A/G and rs313810945T/C) in IGF2 gene were used for genotyping by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and KASP methods, respectively. The genus Chamaecyparis comprises seven species (C. formosensis, C. hodginsii, C. lawsoniana, C. nootkatensis (Callitropsis nootkatensis), C. obtusa, C. pisifera, and C. thyoides). Accurate species identification is necessary for proper use and economic value of wood. Species identification of woods is generally based on anatomical analysis; however, C. obtusa and C. pisifera wood have similar microscopic morphology, which makes species identification impossible. Therefore, the molecular identification of species in wood of the genus Chamaecyparis is required. In this study, six candidate DNA barcode genes (trnP-GGG, ycf1b, clpP, accD, ycf2, and rps16) in the chloroplast of Chamaecyparis were identified with nucleotide diversity values higher than the arbitrary value of 0.02. Each gene was evaluated for species identification using phylogenetic analysis by genes registered at NCBI (42 sequences each for trnP-GGG, ycf1b, clpP, accD, and ycf2, and 50 sequences for rps16). The genes trnP-GGG, clpP, and rps16 could not be distinguished between C. pisifera and C. formosensis. However, ycf1b, accD, and ycf2 could be distinguished between all Chamaecyparis species. These results suggest the use of the chloroplast genes ycf1b, accD, and ycf2 as DNA barcodes for species identification in Chamaecyparis, including C. obtusa and C. pisifera, based on the reported genetic information to date.

Haemorrhage control during surgery and following traumatic injury remains a critical, life-saving challenge. Cellulose products are already employed in commercially available haemostatic dressings. This work explores sourcing cellulose from sugarcane trash pulp to produce micro- and nanosized fibres with hydroxyl, carboxylic acid, and trimethylamine functional groups, resulting in either positive or negative surface charges. This paper assesses the influence of these fibres on multiple blood clotting parameters in both dispersed solutions and dry gauze applications. In vitro blood clotting studies demonstrated the significant haemostatic potential of cellulose fibres derived from sugarcane waste to initiate clotting. Plasma absorbance assays showed that the 0.25 mg/mL cellulose microfibre dispersion had the highest clotting performance. It was observed that no single property of surface charge, functionality, or fibre morphology exclusively controlled the clotting initiation measured. Instead, a combination of these factors affected clot formation, with negatively charged cellulose microfibres comprising hydroxyl surface groups providing the most promising result, accelerating the coagulation cascade mechanism by 67% compared to the endogenous activity. This difference in clot initiation shows the potential for the non-wood agricultural waste source of cellulose in haemostatic wound healing applications, contributing to the broader understanding of cellulose-based materials’ versatility and their applications in biomedicine.

Mucosal immunity may contribute to clearing SARS-CoV-2 infection prior to systemic infection, thereby allowing hosts to remain seronegative. We describe the meaningful detection of SARS-CoV-2-specific nasal mucosal antibodies in a group of exposed-household individuals that evaded systemic infection. Between June 2020 and February 2023, nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) and acute and convalescent blood were collected from individuals exposed to a SARS-CoV-2-confirmed household member. Nasal secretory IgA (SIgA) antibodies targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were measured using a modified ELISA. Of the 36 exposed individuals without SARS-CoV-2 detected by the RT-PCR of NPS specimens and seronegative for SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG at enrollment and convalescence, 13 (36.1%) had positive SARS-CoV-2-specific SIgA levels detected in the nasal mucosa at enrollment. These individuals had significantly higher nasal SIgA (median 0.52 AU/mL) compared with never-exposed, never-infected controls (0.001 AU/mL) and infected-family participants (0.0002 AU/mL) during the acute visit, respectively (both p < 0.001). The nasal SARS-CoV-2-specific SIgA decreased rapidly over two weeks in the exposed seronegative individuals compared to a rise in SIgA in infected-family members. The nasal SARS-CoV-2-specific SIgA may have a protective role in preventing systemic infection.

One way that bacteria develop antibiotic resistance is by reducing intracellular antibiotic concentrations through efflux pumps. Therefore, enhancing the efficacy of antibiotics using efflux pump inhibitors provides a way to overcome this type of resistance. Notably, an increasing number of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus strains have efflux pump genes. In this study, the extract from Corydalis ternata Nakai tuber (Corydalis Tuber) at 512 mg/L was demonstrated to have an antibiotic synergistic effect with ciprofloxacin at 2 mg/L and tobramycin at 1024 mg/L against methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid identified in Corydalis Tuber, was identified as contributing to this effect. Ethidium bromide efflux pump activity assays showed that Corydalis Tuber extract and berberine inhibited efflux, suggesting that they are efflux pump inhibitors. Molecular docking simulations suggested that berberine binds to S. aureus efflux pump proteins MepA, NorA, NorB, and SdrM. Additionally, berberine and Corydalis Tuber extract inhibit biofilm formation, which can confer antibiotic resistance. This study’s findings suggest that Corydalis Tuber, a traditional herbal medicine, and berberine, a medicinal supplement, act as S. aureus efflux pump inhibitors, synergistically increasing the efficacy of ciprofloxacin and tobramycin and showing promise as a treatment for antibiotic-resistant S. aureus infections, including MRSA.

The composition of fatty acids determines the flavor and quality of meat. Flavor compounds are generated during the cooking process by the decomposition of volatile fatty acids via lipid oxidation. A number of research on candidate genes related to fatty acid content in livestock species have been published. The majority of these studies focused on pigs and cattle; the association between fatty acid composition and meat quality in chickens has rarely been reported. Therefore, this study investigated candidate genes associated with fatty acid composition in chickens. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed on 767 individuals from an F2 crossbred population of Yeonsan Ogye and White Leghorn chickens. The Illumina chicken 60K significant single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype data and 30 fatty acids (%) in the breast meat of animals slaughtered at 10 weeks of age were analyzed. SNPs were shown to be significant in 15 traits: C10:0, C14:0, C18:0, C18:1n-7, C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, C20:0, C20:2, C20:3n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3, C24:0, C24:1n-9, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). These SNPs were mostly located on chromosome 10 and around the following genes: ACSS3, BTG1, MCEE, PPARGC1A, ACSL4, ELOVL4, CYB5R4, ME1, and TRPM1. Both oleic acid and arachidonic acid contained the candidate genes: MCEE and TRPM1. These two fatty acids are antagonistic to each other and have been identified as traits that contribute to the production of volatile fatty acids. The results of this study improve our understanding of the genetic mechanisms through which fatty acids in chicken affect the meat flavor.

This study reported an application of Au nanogap substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements to quantitatively analyze melamine and its derivative products at trace levels in pet liquid food (milk) combined with a waveband selection approach, namely variable importance in projection (VIP). Six different concentrations of melamine, cyanuric acid, and melamine combined with cyanuric acid were created, and SERS spectra were acquired from 550 to 1620cm−1. Detection was possible up to 200 pM for melamine-contaminated samples, and 400 pM concentration detection for other two groups. The VIP-PLSR models obtained correlation coefficient (R2) values of 0.997, 0.985, and 0.981, with root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) values of 18.492 pM, 19.777 pM, and 15.124 pM for prediction datasets. Additionally, partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to classify both pure and different concentrations of spiked samples. The results showed that the maximum classification accuracy for melamine was 100%, for cyanuric acid it was 96%, and for melamine coupled with cyanuric acid it was 95%. The results obtained clearly demonstrated that the Au nanogap substrate offers low-concentration, rapid, and efficient detection of hazardous additive chemicals in pet consuming liquid food.

Self‐assembled colloidal nanostructures enable various interesting fabrication alternatives to current top‐down lithographic approaches for supporting localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Recently, there have been numerous efforts to manipulate the LSPR in structural or compositional engineering using clustered nanoparticles (NPs). However, creating heterogeneous colloidal clusters comprising two or more types of NPs requires a complicated chemical synthesis of the linker molecules on the NP surfaces. Moreover, the traditional assembly methods pose several challenges to 3D manufacturing. Herein, a fountain pen‐inspired open‐microfluidic approach demonstrating an exquisite balance between evaporation and capillary action is reported. This approach enables the direct writing of binary NP clusters. Microcapillaries are designed to precisely control the evaporation and capillary action of the binary NP suspension ink at the tip. This approach effectively guides the growth of NP clusters along the out‐of‐plane direction to fabricate a freeform microarchitecture. The growth characteristics are theoretically explained using a simplified balancing model. In addition, the optical properties can be tuned precisely using multicolloidal NP mixing. A Janus pillar comprising plasmonic NPs and biomolecules is showcased as a microactuator operating under chemical stimuli. It is expected that the proposed method paves the way for manufacturing numerous interesting structures in nanophotonics.

IntroductionThis study aimed to investigate the association of smoking and physical activity (PA) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adult men in Korea.MethodsThis study analyzed data of 7,229 adult men aged 19–64 years obtained from the 2014–2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Information on smoking habits was obtained using KNHANES data, while that on total PA (TPA), leisure-time PA (LTPA), and occupational PA (OPA) was collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Smoking status was classified into non-smokers and smokers, and PA was categorized into three groups (total, leisure time, and occupational) according to the time spent engaging in moderate or high-intensity PA areas. The diagnosis of MetS was based on the Adult Treatment Program III of the National Cholesterol Education Program and Koreans’ waist circumference criteria.ResultsLogistic regression revealed that the risk of MetS was significantly lower in non-smokers than in smokers, even after adjusting for all covariates. The risk of MetS was significantly lower in individuals who engaged in at least 150 min of moderate- and high-intensity TPA or LTPA per week than in those who did not engage in PA. Furthermore, smokers who engaged in at least 150 min of moderate- to high-intensity TPA and LTPA per week had a significantly lower risk of MetS than those who did not engage in PA. Meanwhile, OPA was not associated with MetS.ConclusionThe findings suggest that engaging in moderate- to high-intensity TPA or LTPA for at least 150 min per week attenuates the risk of MetS caused by smoking.

Several studies in computer vision have examined specular removal, which is crucial for object detection and recognition. This research has traditionally been divided into two tasks: specular highlight removal, which focuses on removing specular highlights on object surfaces, and reflection removal, which deals with specular reflections occurring on glass surfaces. In reality, however, both types of specular effects often coexist, making it a fundamental challenge that has not been adequately addressed. Recognizing the necessity of integrating specular components handled in both tasks, we constructed a specular-light (S-Light) DB for training single-image-based deep learning models. Moreover, considering the absence of benchmark datasets for quantitative evaluation, the multi-scale normalized cross correlation (MS-NCC) metric, which considers the correlation between specular and diffuse components, was introduced to assess the learning outcomes.

Bimodal optical-electrical data generated when a 20 nm diameter silica (SiO2) nanoparticle was trapped by a plasmonic nanopore sensor were simulated using Multiphysics COMSOL and compared with sensor measurements for closely matching experimental parameters. The nanosensor, employed self-induced back action (SIBA) to optically trap nanoparticles in the center of a double nanohole (DNH) structure on top a solid-state nanopores (ssNP). This SIBA actuated nanopore electrophoresis (SANE) sensor enables simultaneous capture of optical and electrical data generated by several underlying forces acting on the trapped SiO2 nanoparticle: plasmonic optical trapping, electroosmosis, electrophoresis, viscous drag, and heat conduction forces. The Multiphysics simulations enabled dissecting the relative contributions of those forces acting on the nanoparticle as a function of its location above and through the sensor's ssNP. Comparisons between simulations and experiments demonstrated qualitative similarities in the optical and electrical time-series data generated as the nanoparticle entered and exited from the SANE sensor. These experimental parameter-matched simulations indicated that the competition between optical and electrical forces shifted the trapping equilibrium position close to the top opening of the ssNP, relative to the optical trapping force maximum that was located several nm above. The experimentally estimated minimum for the optical force needed to trap a SiO2 nanoparticle was consistent with corresponding simulation predictions of optical-electrical force balance. The comparison of Multiphysics simulations with experiments improves our understanding of the interplay between optical and electrical forces as a function of nanoparticle position across this plasmonic nanopore sensor.

Flavor is an important sensory trait of chicken meat. The free amino acid (FAA) and nucleotide (NT) components of meat are major factors affecting meat flavor during the cooking process. As a genetic approach to improve meat flavor, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify the potential candidate genes related to the FAA and NT components of chicken breast meat. Measurements of FAA and NT components were recorded at the age of 10 weeks from 764 and 767 birds, respectively, using a White leghorn and Yeonsan ogye crossbred F2 chicken population. For genotyping, we used 60K Illumina single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips. We found a total of nine significant SNPs for five FAA traits (arginine, glycine, lysine, threonine content, and the essential FAAs and one NT trait (inosine content), and six significant genomic regions were identified, including three regions shared among the essential FAAs, arginine, and inosine content traits. A list of potential candidate genes in significant genomic regions was detected, including the KCNRG, KCNIP4, HOXA3, THSD7B, and MMUT genes. The essential FAAs had significant gene regions the same as arginine. The genes related to arginine content were involved in nitric oxide metabolism, while the inosine content was possibly affected by insulin activity. Moreover, the threonine content could be related to methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. The genes and SNPs identified in this study might be useful markers in chicken selection and breeding for chicken meat flavor.

Background Cross-talk between mitogen-activated protein kinase and estrogen has been reported; however, the role of BRAFV600E in the estrogen responsiveness of thyroid cancer is unknown. We elucidated the effect of BRAFV600E on the estrogen-induced increase in metastatic potential in thyroid cancer. Methods Using a pair of cell lines, human thyroid cell lines which harbor wild type BRAF gene (Nthy/WT) and Nthy/BRAFV600E (Nthy/V600E), the expression of estrogen receptors (ERs) and estrogen-induced metastatic phenotypes were evaluated. Susceptibility to ERα- and ERβ-selective agents was evaluated to confirm differential ER expression. ESR expression was analyzed according to BRAFV600E status and age (≤50 years vs. >50 years) using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data. Results Estradiol increased the ERα/ERβ expression ratio in Nthy/V600E, whereas the decreased ERα/ERβ expression ratio was found in Nthy/WT. BRAFV600E-mutated cell lines showed a higher E2-induced increase in metastatic potential, including migration, invasion, and anchorage-independent growth compared with Nthy/WT. An ERα antagonist significantly inhibited migration in Nthy/V600E cells, whereas an ERβ agonist was more effective in Nthy/WT. In the BRAFV600E group, ESR1/ESR2 ratio was significantly higher in younger age group (≤50 years) compared with older age group (>50 years) by TCGA data analysis. Conclusion Our data show that BRAFV600E mutation plays a crucial role in the estrogen responsiveness of thyroid cancer by regulating ER expression. Therefore, BRAFV600E might be used as a biomarker when deciding future hormone therapies based on estrogen signaling in thyroid cancer patients.

Genetic analysis has great potential as a tool to differentiate between different species and breeds of livestock. In this study, the optimal combinations of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers for discriminating the Yeonsan Ogye chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) breed were identified using high-density 600K SNP array data. In 3,904 individuals from 198 chicken breeds, SNP markers specific to the target population were discovered through a case-control genome-wide association study (GWAS) and filtered out based on the linkage disequilibrium blocks. Significant SNP markers were selected by feature selection applying two machine learning algorithms: Random Forest (RF) and AdaBoost (AB). Using a machine learning approach, the 38 (RF) and 43 (AB) optimal SNP marker combinations for the Yeonsan Ogye chicken population demonstrated 100% accuracy. Hence, the GWAS and machine learning models used in this study can be efficiently utilized to identify the optimal combination of markers for discriminating target populations using multiple SNP markers.

Objectives This study examined the degradation potential of PS by yellow mealworm larvae (Tenebrio molitor). Methods PS degradation characteristics by mealworm larvae were investigated by supplying PS as a nutrient, and the intestinal microflora of mealworms were analyzed. Decomposition products of PS by mealworm larvae were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Results and Discussion The maximum amount of PS degradation by mealworm larvae (about 14.3 mg/mealworm) was measured at 30℃ and 80% relative humidity, but the maximum peak degradation rate (0.154 mg/d/mealworm) was observed at 30℃ and 70% relative humidity. Most of the intestinal microorganisms of mealworms were identified as Proteobacteria except for some Firmicute, and new colonies such as Acinetobacter, Exiguobacterium, and Pseudomonas were appeared. A carbonyl group presumed to be a conversion product of PS (C-O-C vibration, 1118 cm-1, O-C=O stretch, 1644 cm-1) was observed. Conclusion Maximum decomposition of PS by mealworm larvae was achieved at 30℃ and 80% relative humidity, and structural changes of PS were observed in the decomposition product. Isolation of the intestinal pure microorganisms contributing to PS degradation and stimulation of PS degradation by the microorganism should be conducted at a follow-up study.

Objectives: Polystyrene is a plastic that leads to environmental pollution. In particular, expanded polystyrene is very light and takes up much space, causing additional environmental problems. The aim of this study was to isolate new symbiotic bacteria which degraded polystyrene from mealworms. Methods: The population of polystyrene degrading bacteria was increased by enrichment culture of intestinal bacteria from mealworms with polystyrene as a sole carbon source. The degradation activity of isolated bacteria was evaluated by morphological change of micro-polystyrene particles and the surface change of polystyrene films. Results: Eight isolated species (Acinetobacter septicus, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Klebsiella grimontii, Pseudomonas multiresinivorans, Pseudomonas nitroreducens, Pseudomonas plecoglossicida, Serratia marcescens, and Yokenella regensburgei) were identified that degrade polystyrene. Conclusion: Bacterial identification shows that a broad spectrum of bacteria decomposing polystyrene coexists in the intestinal tract of mealworms.

The in-vivo profiling of iron and myelin across cortical depths and underlying white matter has important implications for advancing knowledge about their roles in brain development and degeneration. Here, we utilize χ-separation, a recently-proposed advanced susceptibility mapping that creates positive (χpos) and negative (χneg) susceptibility maps, to generate the depth-wise profiles of χpos and χneg as surrogate biomarkers for iron and myelin, respectively. Two regional sulcal fundi of precentral and middle frontal areas are profiled and compared with findings from previous studies. The results show that the χpos profiles peak at superificial white matter (SWM), which is an area beneath cortical gray matter known to have the highest accumulation of iron within the cortex and white matter. On the other hand, the χneg profiles increase in SWM toward deeper white matter. These characteristics in the two profiles are in agreement with histological findings of iron and myelin. Furthermore, the χneg profiles report regional differences that agree with well-known distributions of myelin concentration. When the two profiles are compared with those of QSM and R2*, different shapes and peak locations are observed. This preliminary study offers an insight into one of the possible applications of χ-separation for exploring microstructural information of the human brain, as well as clinical applications in monitoring changes of iron and myelin in related diseases.

Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal skin bacterium and a causative agent of infectious diseases. Biofilm formation in S. aureus is a mechanism that facilitates the emergence of resistant strains. This study proposes a mechanism for the regulation of biofilm formation in S. aureus through strain-specific physiological changes induced by the plant steroid diosgenin. A comparison of diosgenin-induced changes in the expression of regulatory genes associated with physiological changes revealed the intracellular regulatory mechanisms involved in biofilm formation. Diosgenin reduced biofilm formation in S. aureus ATCC 6538 and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) CCARM 3090 by 39% and 61%, respectively. Conversely, it increased biofilm formation in S. aureus ATCC 29213 and MRSA CCARM 3820 by 186% and 582%, respectively. Cell surface hydrophobicity and extracellular protein and carbohydrate contents changed in a strain-specific manner in response to biofilm formation. An assessment of the changes in gene expression associated with biofilm formation revealed that diosgenin treatment decreased the expression of icaA and spa and increased the expression of RNAIII, agrA, sarA, and sigB in S. aureus ATCC 6538 and MRSA CCARM 3090; however, contrasting gene expression changes were noted in S. aureus ATCC 29213 and MRSA CCARM 3820. These results suggest that a regulatory mechanism of biofilm formation is that activated sigB expression sequentially increases the expression of sarA, agrA, and RNAIII. This increased RNAIII expression decreases the expression of spa, a surface-associated adhesion factor. An additional regulatory mechanism of biofilm formation is that activated sigB expression decreases the expression of an unknown regulator that increases the expression of icaA. This in turn decreases the expression of icaA, which decreases the synthesis of polysaccharide intercellular adhesins and ultimately inhibits biofilm formation. By assessing strain-specific contrasting regulatory signals induced by diosgenin in S. aureus without gene mutation, this study elucidated the signal transduction mechanisms that regulate biofilm formation based on physiological and gene expression changes.

Meat flavor is an important factor that influences the palatability of chicken meat. Inosine 5′-monophosphate (IMP), inosine, and hypoxanthine are nucleic acids that serve as taste-active compounds, mainly enhancing flavor in muscle tissue. For this study, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a mixed linear model to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are significantly associated with changes in the contents of the nucleotide-related compounds of breast meat in the Korean native chicken (KNC) population. The genomic region on chicken chromosome 5 containing an SNP (rs316338889) was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with all three traits. The trait-related candidate genes located in this significant genomic region were investigated through performing a functional enrichment analysis and protein–protein interaction (PPI) database search. We found six candidate genes related to the function that possibly affected the content of nucleotide-related compounds in the muscle, namely, the TNNT3 and TNNT2 genes that regulate muscle contractions; the INS, IGF2, and DUSP8 genes associated with insulin sensitivity; and the C5NT1AL gene that is presumably related to the nucleotide metabolism process. This study is the first of its kind to find candidate genes associated with the content of all three types of nucleotide-related compounds in chicken meat using GWAS. The candidate genes identified in this study can be used for genomic selection to breed better-quality chickens in the future.

Bacteriophages demonstrate a remarkable ability to adhere to host surfaces, thus improving their chances of reproduction. These viral entities demonstrate extreme interface properties through their highly specific and periodic peptide receptors, surpassing any manmade surface in terms of variability and adhesiveness. This intriguing quality has led to investigations into biohybrid nanostructures, wherein bacteriophages are combined with inorganic substances. Among them, cesium lead halide (CsPbI3) perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are promising emissive materials, with their optical characteristics being vital for the advancement of light-emitting and optoelectronic apparatuses. In this study, we explored the integration of M13 bacteriophages (phages) with CsPbI3 PQDs. Our observations indicated that the photoluminescence of CsPbI3 + M13 phage was amplified 7.7-fold compared to pure CsPbI3, the lifetime of the quantum dots extended from 40.47 ns to 53.32 ns and enhanced the stability. Simulations and experimental results both demonstrate the significant role of M13 bacteriophages in achieving enhanced optical properties for PQDs. These findings confirm the significant contribution of M13 phages to enhancing the optical attributes in PQDs, laying the groundwork for innovative optoelectronic applications.

Plasmonic molecules, which are geometrically well-defined plasmonic metal nanoparticle clusters, have attracted significant attention due to their enhancement of light–matter interactions owing to a stronger electric field enhancement than that by single particles. High-resolution lithography techniques provide precise positioning of plasmonic nanoparticles, but their fabrication costs are excessively high. In this study, we propose a lithography-free, self-assembly fabrication method, termed the dual-dewetting process, which allows the control of the size and density of gold nanoparticles. This process involves depositing a gold thin film on a substrate and inducing dewetting through thermal annealing, followed by a second deposition and annealing. The method achieves a uniform distribution of particle size and density, along with increased particle density, across a 6-inch wafer. The superiority of the method is confirmed by a 30-fold increase in the signal intensity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering following the additional dewetting with an 8 nm film, compared to single dewetting alone. Our findings indicate that the dual-dewetting method provides a simple and efficient approach to enable a variety of plasmonic applications through efficient plasmonic molecule large-area fabrication.

The major histocompatibility complex-B (MHC-B) region of chicken is crucially important in their immunogenesis and highly diverse among different breeds, lines, and even populations. Because it determines the resistance/susceptibility to numerous infectious diseases, it is important to analyze this genomic region, particularly classical class I and II genes, to determine the variation and diversity that ultimately affect antigen presentation. This study investigated five lines of indigenous Korean native chicken (KNC) and the Ogye breed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data with Geneious Prime-based assembly and variant calling with the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) best practices pipeline. The consensus sequences of MHC-B (BG1-BF2) were obtained for each chicken line/breed and their variants were analyzed. All of the Korean native chicken lines possessed an excessive number of variants, including an ample amount of high-impact variants that provided useful information regarding modified major histocompatibility complex molecules. The study confirmed that next-generation sequencing techniques can effectively be used to detect MHC variabilities and the KNC lines are highly diverse for the MHC-B region, suggesting a substantial divergence from red junglefowl.

Coccidiosis caused by the Eimeria species is a highly problematic disease in the chicken industry. Here, we used RNA sequencing to observe the time-dependent host responses of Eimeria-infected chickens to examine the genes and biological functions associated with immunity to the parasite. Transcriptome analysis was performed at three time points: 4, 7, and 21 days post-infection (dpi). Based on the changes in gene expression patterns, we defined three groups of genes that showed differential expression. This enabled us to capture evidence of endoplasmic reticulum stress at the initial stage of Eimeria infection. Furthermore, we found that innate immune responses against the parasite were activated at the first exposure; they then showed gradual normalization. Although the cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathway was significantly operative at 4 dpi, its downregulation led to an anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally, the construction of gene co-expression networks enabled identification of immunoregulation hub genes and critical pattern recognition receptors after Eimeria infection. Our results provide a detailed understanding of the host-pathogen interaction between chicken and Eimeria. The clusters of genes defined in this study can be utilized to improve chickens for coccidiosis control.

This study proposes the use of genetic analysis as a complementary method for species identification in the genus Pinus, particularly in cases where anatomical identification is challenging. Pinus species were grouped based on anatomical similarities, and the efficacy of using ycf1b, which is the most variable for Pinus species identification, and rbcL, which is a suggested DNA barcode for land plants, was evaluated within each group. Sequences for each species were obtained from the National Center for Biotechnology Information database and were used to perform phylogenetic analysis. Among the species in Group 1 (P. echinata, P. elliottii, P. ponderosa, P. radiata, P. rigida, P. taeda, and P. virginiana), rbcL was only effective in identifying P. radiata and P. ponderosa, while ycf1b classified five species. An additional DNA barcode, trnH-psbA, was needed to identify P. radiata and P. taeda. In Group 2 (P. densiflora, P. sylvestris, and P. thunbergii), most species were identified using both rbcL and ycf1b, with the exception of possible hybrids of P. densiflora and P. sylvestris. In Group 3 (P. koraiensis and P. strobus), two species were identified using rbcL and ycf1b. Combining genetic species identification with anatomical identification can accurately identify species of the genus Pinus.

The recessive white (locus c) phenotype observed in chickens is associated with three alleles (recessive white c, albino ca, and red-eyed white cre) and causative mutations in the tyrosinase (TYR) gene. The recessive white mutation (c) inhibits the transcription of TYR exon 5 due to a retroviral sequence insertion in intron 4. In this study, we genotyped and sequenced the insertion in TYR intron 4 to identify the mutation causing the unusual white plumage of Yeonsan Ogye chickens, which normally have black plumage. The white chickens had a homozygous recessive white genotype that matched the sequence of the recessive white type, and the inserted sequence exhibited 98% identity with the avian leukosis virus ev-1 sequence. In comparison, brindle and normal chickens had the homozygous color genotype, and their sequences were the same as the wild-type sequence, indicating that this phenotype is derived from other mutation(s). In conclusion, white chickens have a recessive white mutation allele. Since the size of the sample used in this study was limited, further research through securing additional samples to perform validation studies is necessary. Therefore, after validation studies, a selection system for conserving the phenotypic characteristics and genetic diversity of the population could be established if additional studies to elucidate specific phenotype-related genes in Yeonsan Ogye are performed.

Unplanned and rapid urban growth requires the reckless expansion of infrastructure including water, sewage, energy, and transportation facilities, and thus causes environmental problems such as deterioration of old towns, reduction of open spaces, and air pollution. To alleviate and prevent such problems induced by urban growth, the accurate prediction and management of urban expansion is crucial. In this context, this study aims at modeling and predicting urban expansion in Seoul metropolitan area (SMA), Korea, using GIS and XAI techniques. To this end, we examined the effects of land-cover, socio-economic, and environmental features in 2007 and 2019, within the optimal radius from a certain raster cell. Then, this study combined the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model and Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) in analyzing urban expansion. The findings of this study suggest urban growth is dominantly affected by land-cover characteristics, followed by topographic attributes. In addition, the existence of water body and high ECVAM grades tend to significantly reduce the possibility of urban expansion. The findings of this study are expected to provide several policy implications in urban and environmental planning fields, particularly for effective and sustainable management of lands.

Resistant bacteria are emerging as a critical problem in the treatment of bacterial infections by neutralizing antibiotic activity. The development of new traditional mechanisms of antibiotics is not the optimal solution. A more reasonable approach may be to use relatively safe, plant-based compounds in combination with conventional antibiotics in an effort to increase their efficacy or restore their activity against resistant bacteria. We present our study of mixing Ricini Semen extract, or its constituent fatty acids, with oxacillin and testing the effects of each on the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Changes in the cell membrane fluidity of methicillin-resistant S. aureus were found to be a major component of the mechanism of synergistic antibiotic activity of Ricini Semen extract and its constituent fatty acids. In our model, changes in cellular membrane fluidity disrupted the normal function of bacterial signaling membrane proteins BlaR1 and MecR1, which are known to detect oxacillin, and resulted in the incomplete expression of penicillin-binding proteins 2a and β-lactamase. Utilizing the mechanism presented in this study presents the possibility of developing a method for treating antibiotic-resistant bacteria using traditional antibiotics with plant-based compounds.

The Yeonsan Ogye (YO) chicken is a natural heritage of Korea, characterized by black feathers, skin, bones, eyes, and comb. The purebred of YO population has been reared under the natural mating system with no systematic selection and breeding plan. The purpose of this study was to identify the genetic diversity and find the optimal number of population sub-division using 12 polymorphic microsatellite (MS) markers to construct a pedigree-based breeding plan for the YO population. A total of 509 YO birds were used for this study. Genetic diversity and population structure analysis were conducted based on the MS marker genotype information. The overall average polymorphic information content value and expected heterozygosity of the population were 0.586, and 0.642, respectively. The K-mean cluster analysis based on the genetic distance result confirmed that the current YO population can be divided into three ancestry groups. Individuals in each group were evaluated based on their genetic distance to identify the potential candidates for a future breeding plan. This study concludes that a future breeding plan with known pedigree information of selected founder animals, which holds high genetic diversity, could be the best strategy to ensure the conservation of the Korean YO chicken population.

The robust production of droplets by microfluidic T-junctions is a well-established technique. Um et al. demonstrate how the mutual interaction between droplets can be used to achieve additional control including the simultaneous release of droplets caused by synchronization phenomena.

This paper describes adaptive sliding mode control of a steer-by-wire (SBW) system to guarantee rack position tracking performance in various driving situations. The proposed control algorithm was developed using only motor position sensors (MPS) without information on tire/road friction. A stiffness parameter adaptation law was designed to compensate for disturbances in the SBW rack system. It is demonstrated that the proposed adaptation algorithm provides good tracking performance without using an additional gain tuning approach under various road conditions. Moreover, in the proposed algorithm, a dynamic stiffness model has been developed to improve rack position tracking performance under a zero vehicle speed scenario. In a dynamic stiffness model, the stiffness center is not fixed but changes depending on the actual rack position. In the event than an SBW vehicle is parking, it is important to ensure rack position tracking performance at low and zero vehicle speeds. Computer simulations and vehicle tests were performed under various driving situations to test the performance of the proposed control algorithm. The results demonstrate that the proposed control algorithm ensures tracking performance on dry asphalt and wet road conditions, as well as at zero vehicle speed.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is an emerging technique dedicated to wireless vehicular communication to improve transportation safety by exchanging driving information between vehicles. For safety purposes, vehicles periodically broadcast a safety packet via Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication. Accordingly, VANET safety applications demand a reliable exchange of the safety packet with high Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), acceptable latency, and communication fairness. However, the communication performance significantly degrades due to numerous packet collisions when a large number of vehicles simultaneously access limited channel resources for the safety broadcast. In particular, the problem grows more severe in congested VANETs absent infrastructures since vehicles must control channel access using a self-adaptive scheme without external assistance. Thus, a robust and decentralized channel access protocol for VANETs is required to achieve road safety. In this paper, we propose an intelligent channel access algorithm empowered by cooperative Reinforcement Learning (RL), in which vehicles coordinate the channel access in a fully-decentralized manner. We also consider a proper interaction scheme between vehicles for enhancing the V2V safety broadcast in infrastructure-less congested VANETs. We provide evaluation results with extensive simulations according to various levels of traffic congestion. Simulations confirm the superior performance of the algorithm: the algorithm has a 20% increase in PDR compared to the latest RL-based channel access scheme. Furthermore, the algorithm satisfies the low latency requirement of VANET safety applications as well as both short-term and long-term communication fairness.

This study compares the performance according to a working fluid, the number of battery cooling block ports, and header width required for cooling according to the application of the direct contact single-phase battery cooling method in a 1S16P battery module and examines the battery cooling performance according to the flow rate under the standard and summer conditions based on an optimized model. The analysis result verified that R134a showed low-pressure drop and high cooling performance as the working fluid of the direct contact single-phase cooling system in the 1S16P battery module, and R134a showed the best cooling and stability when applied with three ports and a 5 mm header. In addition, under 25 °C outdoor conditions, the maximum temperature of the battery and the temperature difference between the batteries at 3 and 5 lpm excluding 1 lpm are 30.5 °C, 4.91 °C, and 28.7 °C, 3.28 °C, indicating that the flow rate of refrigerant was appropriate for battery safety. In contrast, in the summer condition of 35 °C, the maximum temperature of the battery and temperature difference between the batteries were 38.8 °C and 3.27 °C at the R134a flow rate of 5 lpm or more, which was verified as a stable flow condition for battery safety.

Over the past few decades, most cities worldwide have experienced a rapid expansion with unprecedented population growth and industrialization. Currently, half of the world’s population is living in urban areas, which only account for less than 1% of the Earth. A rapid and unplanned urban expansion, however, has also resulted in serious challenges to sustainable development of the cities, such as traffic congestion and loss of natural environment and open spaces. This study aims at modeling and predicting the expansion of urban areas in South Korea by utilizing an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) model. To this end, the study utilized the land-cover maps in 2007 and 2019, as well as several socioeconomic, physical, and environmental attributes. The findings of this study suggest that the urban expansion tends to be promoted when a certain area is close to economically developed area with gentle topography. In addition, the existence of mountainous area and legislative regulations on land use were found to significantly reduce the possibility of urban expansion. Compared to previous studies, this study is novel in that it captures the relative importance of various influencing factors in predicting the urban expansion by integrating the XGBoost model and SHAP values.

Phenolic acids, found in cereals, legumes, vegetables, and fruits, have various biological functions. We aimed to compare the antihypertensive potential of different phenolic acids by evaluating their ACE inhibitory activity and cytoprotective capacity in EA.hy 926 endothelial cells. In addition, we explored the mechanism underlying the antihypertensive activity of sinapic acid. Of all the phenolic acids studied, sinapic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, and ferulic acid significantly inhibited ACE activity. Moreover, gallic acid, sinapic acid, and ferulic acid significantly enhanced intracellular NO production. Based on the results of GSH depletion, ROS production, and MDA level analyses, sinapic acid was selected to study the mechanism underlying the antihypertensive effect. Sinapic acid decreases endothelial dysfunction by enhancing the expression of antioxidant-related proteins. Sinapic acid increased phosphorylation of eNOS and Akt in a dose-dependent manner. These findings indicate the potential of sinapic acid as a treatment for hypertension.

Metformin is a widely used drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Antidiabetic drugs are also known to influence cancer progression, as high glucose levels affect both cancer and diabetes. Metformin induces cell cycle arrest in cancer cells, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear in cervical cancer system. Here, we examined how metformin affects cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. Western blot analysis showed that levels of O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) and O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) were increased in cervical cancer cells; these effects were reversed by metformin treatment. Immunoprecipitation analysis was used to examine the interplay between O-GlcNAcylation and phosphorylation in HeLa cells, revealing that metformin decreased O-GlcNAcylated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and increased levels of phospho-AMPK compared to untreated cells. These results were associated with decreased cell cycle arrest and apoptotic cell death in HeLa cells, as shown by flow cytometry. Moreover, 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (a glutamine fructose-6-phosphate aminotransferase inhibitor) or thiamet G (an O-GlcNAcase inhibitor) decreased or increased levels of O-GlcNAcylated AMPK, and increased or decreased levels of phosphorylated AMPK, respectively, suggesting that O-GlcNAc modification affects AMPK activation. Of note, we found that metformin treatment of HeLa cells increased the levels of p21 and p27 (which are AMPK-dependent cell cycle inhibitors), leading to increased cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HeLa cells compared to untreated cells. These findings suggest that metformin may serve as a useful antiproliferative drug in cervical cancer cells, with potential therapeutic benefit.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste was depolymerized into bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) through glycolysis with the aid of oyster shell-derived catalysts. The equilibrium yield of BHET was as high as 68.6% under the reaction conditions of mass ratios (EG to PET = 5, catalyst to PET = 0.01) at 195 °C for 1 h. Although biomass-derived Ca-based catalysts were used for PET glycolysis to obtain BHET monomers, no statistical analysis was performed to optimize the reaction conditions. Thus, in this study, we applied response surface methodology (RSM) based on three-factor Box–Behnken design (BBD) to investigate the optimal conditions for glycolysis by analyzing the independent and interactive effects of the factors, respectively. Three independent factors of interest include reaction time, temperature, and mass ratio of catalyst to PET under a fixed amount of ethylene glycol (mass ratio of EG to PET = 5) due to the saturation of the yield above the mass ratio. The quadratic regression equation was calculated for predicting the yield of BHET, which was in good agreement with the experimental data (R2 = 0.989). The contour and response surface plots showed the interaction effect between three variables and the BHET yield with the maximum average yield of monomer (64.98%) under reaction conditions of 1 wt% of mass ratio (catalyst to PET), 195 °C, and 45 min. Both the experimental results and the analyses of the response surfaces revealed that the interaction effects of reaction temperature vs. time and temperature vs. mass ratio of the catalyst to the PET were more prominent in comparison to reaction time vs. mass ratio of the catalyst to the PET.

Detecting and classifying the modulation scheme of the intercepted noisy low probability of intercept (LPI) radar signals in real time is a necessary survival technique required in the electronic warfare systems. Therefore, LPI radar waveform recognition technique (LWRT) has gained an increasing attention recently. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based LWRT, where the input and hyperparameters of the CNN, such as the input size, number of filters, filter size, and number of neurons are designed based on various signal conditions to guarantee the maximum classification performance. In addition, we propose a sample averaging technique to efficiently reduce the large computational cost required when the intercept receiver needs to process a large amount of signal samples to improve the detection sensitivity. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed LWRT with numerous Monte Carlo simulations based on the simulation conditions used in the recent LWRTs introduced in the literature. It is testified that the proposed LWRT offers significant improvement, such as robustness to noise and recognition accuracy, over the recent LWRTs.

Detecting trace amounts of explosives to ensure personal safety is important, and this is possible by using laser-based spectroscopy techniques. We performed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using plasmonic nanogap substrates for the solution phase detection of some nitro-based compounds, taking advantage of the hot spot at the nanogap. An excitation wavelength of 785 nm with an incident power of as low as ≈0.1 mW was used to excite the nanogap substrates. Since both RDX and PETN cannot be dissolved in water, acetone was used as a solvent. TNT was dissolved in water as well as in hexane. The main SERS peaks of TNT, RDX, and PETN were clearly observed down to the order of picomolar concentration. The variations in SERS spectra observed from different explosives can be useful in distinguishing and identifying different nitro-based compounds. This result indicates that our nanogap substrates offer an effective approach for explosives identification.

The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is a destructive pest of Solanaceous crops. This study investigated the effects of X-ray irradiation on development, DNA damage and recovery in P. operculella. Eggs, larvae (*3rd and 5th), pupae, and adults were irradiated with various doses of X-ray irradiation. Egg hatching was inhibited at 70 Gy, and the pupation and adult emergence of 3rd-instar larvae were inhibited at 150 Gy and 70 Gy, respectively. Some 5th-instar larvae pupated at 150 Gy but failed to emerge as adults at 150 Gy. The adult emergence of pupae that spawned at 150 Gy, but egg hatching of F1 generation was completely inhibited. In addition, the adult emergence of irradiated-pupae was completely inhibited at 200 Gy. Adults spawned at 150 Gy, but the hatching of the F1 generation was completely suppressed. The levels of DNA damage and repair in P. operculella adults were investigated using the alkaline comet assay. The results indicated that X-ray irradiation increased DNA damage in a dose-dependent manner and showed that DNA damage was repaired in a time-dependent manner. However, damage from a high radiation doses was not completely repaired. This result suggests that at least 150 Gy radiation should be used for the control P. operculella.
