This article aims to identify and analyse the media information on migratory flows registered in the Mediterranean context and the treatment given to the migrant subject in the representations made of the people’s mobility between different countries of the region. An international and interdisciplinary group of researchers has analysed 3452 news related to the Mediterranean basin, and produced by the main newspapers and television public channels of Algeria, Egypt, Spain, France, Italy, Morocco, United Kingdom and Tunisia. In addition to the first State-level broadcasters, in the case of Spain were also considered four regional public channels (Spanish autonomous communities). The selection of the sample corresponds to two weeks of May 2013. The matrix of analysis included formal aspects of selection and hierarchization of subjects, the topics addressed, the main actors highlighted in the headlines and the designations used in regards to these subjects and actors.The results reveal a few differences in the thematic agenda of the media researched.On both shores of the Mediterranean, migration and migrants are presented as a problem or associated with a source of conflict rather than an idea of opportunity for migrants as well as for host countries., El presente artículo tiene como objetivo identificar y analizar la información difundida por los medios de comunicación sobre los flujos migratorios registrados en el contexto del Mediterráneo y el tratamiento dado al sujeto migrante en las representaciones en torno a la movilidad de personas entre países de la región. Un grupo internacional e interdisciplinar de investigadores ha analizado 3452 noticias relacionadas con la cuenca mediterránea, y producidas por los principales periódicos y canales públicos de televisión de Argelia, Egipto, España, Francia, Italia, Marruecos, Reino Unido y Túnez. Junto a los primeros canales de televisión de ámbito estatal, en el caso de España también se consideran cuatro canales públicos autonómicos. La selección de la muestra corresponde a dos semanas del mes de mayo de 2013. La matriz de análisis contempló aspectos formales de selección y jerarquización de contenidos, así como, los temas tratados, los actores destacados en la información y sus denominaciones. Los resultados revelan pocas diferencias en la agenda temática de los medios analizados. La migración y el migrante se presentan en la prensa y televisión de ambas orillas del Mediterráneo como un problema, asociado a fuente de conflictos más que a una idea de oportunidad para los migrantes y también para los países de acogida.

La presente investigación tiene como objeto de estudio analizar la representación de los jóvenes en la prensa de la región mediterránea. La investigación se centra, en concreto, en cuatro países del Mediterráneo, España e Italia como países de la orilla Norte, y Marruecos y Egipto, como países de la orilla Sur. El objetivo general de esta tesis doctoral será el de establecer la relación entre la representación que realiza la prensa de la región mediterránea sobre la juventud y la recepción de esa misma realidad por parte de los jóvenes. Con esta finalidad, se combinan tres líneas metodológicas. Por un lado, una metodología de corte documental que ponga en relación literatura referida al contexto, las características de los jóvenes y la prensa de la región mediterránea, así como de los fundamentos teóricos y antecedentes sobre la representación de los jóvenes en los medios, su consumo de medios de comunicación y la percepción por parte de los jóvenes del discurso mediático sobre el colectivo al que pertenecen. Se empleará una metodología de corte cuantitativo a través de un análisis de contenido aplicado a la muestra obtenida de 10 diarios de ámbito mediterráneo para determinar el tratamiento que realizan los diarios de la región mediterránea sobre los jóvenes. Este análisis se complementa en una segunda etapa con un análisis cualitativo en el que se aplica un análisis semiótico y discursivo a una parte de la muestra. Finalmente, como instrumento cuantitativo, se aplica un cuestionario dirigido a los jóvenes con el fin de evaluar sus hábitos de consumo de medios y actitudes en torno a la prensa y el discurso que difunden sobre los jóvenes. A partir de los resultados obtenidos en esta investigación, podemos concluir que persiste un desequilibrio informativo en cuanto a la presencia, contextos y temas con los que se les relaciona y el protagonismo de los jóvenes en la prensa. Una representación sesgada de la que, mayoritariamente, son conscientes los jóvenes. This research aims to analyse the representation of the young people in the press of the Mediterranean region. The research focuses, particularly, on four countries in the Mediterranean, Spain and Italy as countries on the North Bank, and Morocco and Egypt, as countries on the South Bank. The general objective of this doctoral thesis will be to establish the rapport between the representation of the youth made by the Mediterranean press and the view of this reality by the young people of this area. To this end, three research methods are combined. On the one hand, a documentary research method that relates literature link to the context, the characteristics of young people and the press of the Mediterranean region, as well as the theoretical foundations and background research on the representation of young people in the media, their media consumption habits and the young people view about the media discourse concerning youth. A quantitative method will be used through a content analysis applied to the sample obtained from 10 Mediterranean newspapers to determine the discourse made by newspapers in the Mediterranean region about young people. This analysis is complemented in a second stage with a qualitative analysis in which a semiotic and discursive analysis is applied to a part of the sample. Finally, as a quantitative instrument, a questionnaire is applied to young people in order to assess their media consumption habits and attitudes regarding the press and the press discourse about young people. Based on the results obtained in this research, we can conclude that an informative imbalance persists in terms of the presence, contexts and issues with which youth are related and the role of young people in the press. A biased representation of which, mostly, young people are aware.

Cuando hemos asumido que los diarios en papel se encaminan paulatinamente hacia el fin de sus días conviene fijar la mirada en quién, posiblemente, pueda transformar esta industria periodística: los jóvenes. Este trabajo hace un repaso de los motivos que explican el distanciamiento entre los jóvenes y la prensa y observa cómo son representados en este medio. Tras aplicar la técnica del análisis de contenido en 10 diarios de ámbito mediterráneo, los resultados demuestran que la representación de los jóvenes se caracteriza por su escasa visibilidad, una imagen desprovista de matices y el dominio de la figura institucional. At a time in which we have assumed that the print newspapers are gradually moving towards the end of their days, should we stare at who possibly can transform the newspaper industry: the youth. This paper makes a review of the reasons for the gap between youth and the press and observes how they are represented in this media. After applying the technique of content analysis to 10 newspapers of the Mediterranean, the findings show that the representation of young people is characterised by their poor visibility, an image divested of nuances and the supremacy of the institutional figure.
