We study the evolution of the low-temperature field-induced magnetic defects observed under an applied magnetic field in a series of frustrated amorphous ferromagnets (Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{75}$P$_{16}$B$_{3}$Al$_{3}$ (a-FeMn). Combining small-angle neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the morphology of these defects resemble that of quasi-bidimensional spin vortices. They are observed in the reentrant spin-glass (RSG) phase, up to the critical concentration $x_{\rm C} \approx 0.36$ which separates the RSG and "true" spin glass (SG) within the low temperature part of the magnetic phase diagram of a-FeMn. These vortices systematically decrease in size with increasing magnetic field or decreasing the average exchange interaction, and they finally disappear in the SG sample ($x = 0.41$), being replaced by field-induced correlations over finite length scales. We study the evolution of the magnetic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge alloys with concentration $x$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.3$) by small-angle neutron scattering. We unambiguously observe the absence of a skyrmion lattice (or A-phase) in bulk MnGe and its onset under a small Mn/Fe substitution. The A-phase is there endowed with an exceptional skyrmion density, and is stabilized within a very large temperature region and a field range which scales with the Fe concentration. Our findings highlight the possibility to fine-tune properties of skyrmion lattices by means of chemical doping.

Reentrant spin glasses are frustrated disordered ferromagnets developing vortex-like textures under an applied magnetic field. Our study of a Ni$_{0.81}$Mn$_{0.19}$ single crystal by small angle neutron scattering clarifies their internal structure and shows that these textures are randomly distributed. Spin components transverse to the magnetic field rotate over length scales of 3-15 nm in the explored field range, decreasing as field increases according to a scaling law. Monte-Carlo simulations reveal that the internal structure of the vortices is strongly distorted and differs from that assumed for "frustrated" skyrmions, built upon a competition between symmetric exchange interactions. Isolated vortices have small non-integer topological charge. The vortices keep an anisotropic shape on a 3 dimensional lattice, recalling "croutons" in a "ferromagnetic soup". Their size and number can be tuned independently by the magnetic field and concentration x (or heat treatment), respectively. We report on diffuse neutron scattering experiments providing evidence for the presence of random strains in the quantum spin ice candidate Pr2Zr2O7. Since Pr is a non-Kramers ion, the strain deeply modifies the picture of Ising magnetic moments governing the low temperature properties of this material. It is shown that the derived strain distribution accounts for the temperature dependence of the specific heat and of the spin excitation spectra. Taking advantage of mean field and spin dynamics simulations, we argue that the randomness in Pr2Zr2O7, promotes a new state of matter, which is disordered, yet characterized by short range antiferroquadrupolar correlations, and from which emerge spin-ice like excitations. This study thus opens an original research route in the field of quantum spin ice.

We study the evolution of helical magnetism in MnGe chiral magnet upon partial substitution of Mn for non magnetic 3d-Co and 4d-Rh ions. At high doping levels, we observe spin helices with very long periods -more than ten times larger than in the pure compound- and sizable ordered moments. This behavior calls for a change in the energy balance of interactions leading to the stabilization of the observed magnetic structures. Strikingly, neutron scattering unambiguously shows a double periodicity in the observed spectra at $x \gtrsim 0.45$ and $\gtrsim 0.25$ for Co- and Rh-doping, respectively. In analogy with observations made in cholesteric liquid crystals, we suggest that it reveals the presence of magnetic twist-grain-boundary phases, involving a dense short-range correlated network of screw dislocations. We explore the field-temperature phase diagram of the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, by means of magnetization and neutron diffraction experiments. Depending on the field strength and direction relative to the high symmetry cubic directions $[001], [1\bar{1}0]$ and $[111]$, the refined field induced magnetic structures are derived from the zero field $\psi_2$ and $\psi_3$ states of the $\Gamma_5$ irreducible representation which describes the ground state of XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets. At low field, domain selection effects are systematically at play. In addition, for $[001]$, a phase transition is reported towards a $\psi_3$ structure at a characteristic field $H_c^{001}=$ 43 mT. For $[1\bar{1}0]$ and $[111]$, the spins are continuously tilted by the field from the $\psi_2$ state, and no phase transition is found while domain selection gives rise to sharp anomalies in the field dependence of the Bragg peaks intensity. For $[1\bar{1}0]$, these results are confirmed by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering experiments, which in addition allow us to determine the field dependence of the spin gap. This study agrees qualitatively with the scenario proposed theoretically by Maryasin {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. We present an experimental study of the quantum spin ice candidate pyrochlore coumpound \przr\ by means of magnetization measurements, specific heat and neutron scattering up to 12 T and down to 60 mK. When the field is applied along the $[111]$ and $[1\bar{1}0]$ directions, ${\bf k}=0$ field induced structures settle in. We find that the ordered moment rises slowly, even at very low temperature, in agreement with macroscopic magnetization. Interestingly, for $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$, the ordered moment appears on the so called $\alpha$ chains only. The spin excitation spectrum is essentially {\it inelastic} and consists in a broad flat mode centered at about 0.4 meV with a magnetic structure factor which resembles the spin ice pattern. For $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$ (at least up to 2.5 T), we find that a well defined mode forms from this broad response, whose energy increases with $H$, in the same way as the temperature of the specific heat anomaly. We finally discuss these results in the light of mean field calculations and propose a new interpretation where quadrupolar interactions play a major role, overcoming the magnetic exchange. In this picture, the spin ice pattern appears shifted up to finite energy because of those new interactions. We then propose a range of acceptable parameters for \przr\, that allow to reproduce several experimental features observed under field. With these parameters, the actual ground state of this material would be an antiferroquadrupolar liquid with spin-ice like excitations.

We have studied by muon spin resonance ({\mu}SR) the helical ground state and fluctuating chiral phase recently observed in the MnGe chiral magnet. At low temperature, the muon polarization shows double period oscillations at short time scales. Their analysis, akin to that recently developed for MnSi [A. Amato et al., Phys. Rev. B 89, 184425 (2014)], provides an estimation of the field distribution induced by the Mn helical order at the muon site. The refined muon position agrees nicely with ab initio calculations. With increasing temperature, an inhomogeneous fluctuating chiral phase sets in, characterized by two well separated frequency ranges which coexist in the sample. Rapid and slow fluctuations, respectively associated with short range and long range ordered helices, coexist in a large temperature range below T$_{N}$ = 170 K. We discuss the results with respect to MnSi, taking the short helical period, metastable quenched state and peculiar band structure of MnGe into account., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

Itinerant magnets generally exhibit pressure induced transitions towards non magnetic states. Using synchrotron based X-ray diffraction and emission spectroscopy, the evolution of the lattice and spin moment in the chiral magnet MnGe was investigated in the paramagnetic state and under pressures up to 38 GPa. The collapse of spin-moment takes place in two steps. A first-order transition with a huge hysteresis around 7 GPa transforms the system from the high-spin at ambient pressure to a low-spin state. The coexistence of spin-states and observation of history-depending irreversibility is explained as effect of long-range elastic strains mediated by magnetovolume coupling. We have studied the spin correlations with $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) propagation vector which appear below 0.4\, K in \tbti\ spin liquid by combining powder neutron diffraction and specific heat on Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ samples with $x$=0, 0.01, -0.01. The $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order clearly appears on all neutron patterns by subtracting a pattern at 1.2(1)\,K. Refining the subtracted patterns at 0.07\,K yields two possible spin structures, with spin-ice-like and monopole-like correlations respectively. Mesoscopic correlations involve Tb moments of 1 to 2 \mub\ ordered on a length scale of about 20 \AA. In addition, long range order involving a small spin component of 0.1 to 0.2 \mub\ is detected for the $x$= 0 and 0.01 samples showing a peak in the specific heat. Comparison with previous single crystals data suggests that the ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order settles in through nanometric spin textures with dominant spin ice character and correlated orientations, analogous to nanomagnetic twins.

In this work, we show that the zero field excitation spectra in the quantum spin ice candidate pyrochlore compound \ybti\ is a continuum characterized by a very broad and almost flat dynamical response which extends up to $1-1.5$ meV, coexisting or not with a quasi-elastic response depending on the wave-vector. The spectra do not evolve between 50 mK and 2 K, indicating that the spin dynamics is only little affected by the temperature in both the short-range correlated and ordered regimes. Although classical spin dynamics simulations qualitatively capture some of the experimental observations, we show that they fail to reproduce this broad continuum. In particular, the simulations predict an energy scale twice smaller than the experimental observations. This analysis is based on a careful determination of the exchange couplings, able to reproduce both the zero field diffuse scattering and the spin wave spectrum rising in the field polarized state. According to this analysis, \ybti\ lies at the border between a ferro and an antiferromagnetic phase. These results suggest that the unconventional ground state of \ybti\ is governed by strong quantum fluctuations arising from the competition between those phases. The observed spectra may correspond to a continuum of deconfined spinons as expected in quantum spin liquids.

Examples of materials where an "order by disorder" mechanism is at play to select a particular ground state are scarce. It has recently been proposed, however, that the antiferromagnetic XY pyrochlore Er2Ti2O7, reveals a most convincing case of this mechanism. Observation of a spin gap at zone centers has recently been interpreted as a corroboration of this physics. In this paper, we argue, however, that the anisotropy generated by the interaction-induced admixing between the crystal-field ground and excited levels provides for an alternative mechanism. It especially predicts the opening of a spin gap of about 15 micro-eV, which is of the same order of magnitude as the one observed experimentally. We present an interpretation of zero field diffuse neutron scattering and of high field magnetisation data at very low temperature in the frustrated pyrochlore system Tb2Ti2O7. This material has antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and it is expected to have Ising character at low temperature. Contrary to expectations, it shows no magnetic ordering down to 0.05\,K, being thus labelled a "spin liquid". However, the ground state in Tb2Ti2O7 is not a mere fluctuating moment paramagnet but, as demonstrated by very recent experiments, a state where the electronic degrees of freedom are hybridised with the phononic variables in an unconventional way. We show here that, by approximating this complex and still unraveled electron-phonon interaction by a dynamic Jahn-Teller coupling, one can account rather well for the diffuse neutron scattering and the low temperature isothermal magnetisation. We discuss the shortcomings of this picture which arise mainly from the fact that the singlet electronic mean field ground state of the model fails to reproduce the observed strong intensity of the elastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. We have studied the field-induced magnetic structures of Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore by single-crystal neutron diffraction under a field applied along the [111] local anisotropy axis, up to H=12T and down to T=40mK. We collected a hundred magnetic Bragg peaks for each field and temperature value and refined the magnetic structures with k=0 propagation vector by performing a symmetry analysis in the space group R-3m, reducing the number of free parameters to three only. We observe a gradual reorientation of the Tb magnetic moments towards the field direction, close to a "3-in, 1-out / 1-in, 3-out" spin structure in the whole field range 0.05-12T. We perform a quantitative comparison with mean-field calculations and we propose the presence of a low-temperature dynamic symmetry breaking of the local trigonal symmetry, akin to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, i.e. preserving the overall cubic symmetry. We discuss the possible origin of this off-diagonal mixing term in the crystal field hamiltonian in terms of quadrupole-quadrupole interaction or magneto-elastic effects., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, submitted for publication

We present a detailed low-temperature investigation of the statics and dynamics of the anions and methyl groups in the organic conductors (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$AsF$_6$ (TMTSF : tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalene). The 4 K neutron scattering structure refinement of the fully deuterated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-D12 salt allows locating precisely the methyl groups at 4 K. This structure is compared to the one of the fully hydrogenated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-H12 salt previously determined at the same temperature. Surprisingly it is found that deuteration corresponds to the application of a negative pressure of 5 x 10$^2$ MPa to the H12 salt. Accurate measurements of the Bragg intensity show anomalous thermal variations at low temperature both in the deuterated PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ salts. Two different thermal behaviors have been distinguished. Low-Bragg-angle measurements reflect the presence of low-frequency modes at characteristic energies {\theta}$_E$ = 8.3 K and {\theta}$_E$ = 6.7 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and AsF$_6$-D12 salts, respectively. These modes correspond to the low-temperature methyl group motion. Large-Bragg-angle measurements evidence an unexpected structural change around 55 K which probably corresponds to the linkage of the anions to the methyl groups via the formation of F...D-CD2 bonds observed in the 4 K structural refinement. Finally we show that the thermal expansion coefficient of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ is dominated by the librational motion of the PF$_6$ units. We quantitatively analyze the low-temperature variation of the lattice expansion via the contribution of Einstein oscillators, which allows us to determine for the first time the characteristic frequency of the PF6 librations: {\theta}$_E$ = 50 K and {\theta}$_E$ = 76 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and PF$_6$-H12 salts, respectively.

The effect of electron doping on the magnetic properties of the Brownmillerite-type bilayered compounds has been investigated by neutron powder diffraction in La substituted Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8 compounds (x = 0.05 and 0.1), in comparison with the undoped compound (x = 0). In all compounds, a long-range three dimensional collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure is found below the N\'eel temperature TN of respective compound, whereas, well above TN, three dimensional short-range magnetic ordering is observed. In the intermediate temperature range just above TN, a strong effect of electron doping (La substitution) on the magnetic correlations has been observed. Here, a short-range AFM correlation with possible dimensionality of three has been found for substituted compounds (x = 0.05 and 0.1) as compared to the reported two dimensional long-range AFM ordering in the parent compound. With increasing the electron doping, a decrease in TN is also observed. The short-range magnetic correlations set in over a large temperature range above TN. Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 spin ices exhibit elementary excitations akin to magnetic monopoles. Here we focus on Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid, where correlated magnetic moments keep fluctuating down to very low temperatures. Using a monopole picture, we have re-analyzed the field-induced magnetic structure previously determined by neutron diffraction in Tb2Ti2O7. We show that under a high field applied along a [110] direction, Tb2Ti2O7 orders as a three dimensional arrangement of monopole and antimonopole double layers. In contrast, Ho2Ti2O7 spin ice in the same conditions behaves as a monopole-free state. By symmetry analysis we derived the distortions compatible with the observed magnetic structure of Tb2Ti2O7 which can be related to the appearance of the double-layered monopolar order., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted for publication

InMnO$_3$ is a peculiar member of the hexagonal manganites h-RMnO$_3$ (where R is a rare earth metal element), showing crystalline, electronic and magnetic properties at variance with the other compounds of the family. We have studied high quality samples synthesized at high pressure and temperature by powder neutron diffraction. The position of the Mn ions is found to be close to the threshold $\it{x}=1/3$ where superexchange Mn-Mn interactions along the $\it{c}$ axis compensate. Magnetic long range order occurs below $T_{\rm N}$= 120(2) K with a magnetic unit cell doubled along $\it{c}$, whereas short range two dimensional dynamical spin correlations are observed above $T_{\rm N}$. We propose that pseudo-dipolar interactions are responsible for the long period magnetic structure., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The pyrochlore compound \tbti\ is known to remain in a spin-liquid state down to the lowest attainable temperature (0.05\,K), whereas current theories predict it should order into an antiferromagnetic structure. A number of models have been developed in order to resolve this discrepancy, but they could not obtain a spin-liquid ground state. We present here an explanation for the lack of magnetic order in \tbti\ based on the presence of a Jahn-Teller-like distortion from the local trigonal symmetry and on the physics of the two-singlet system coupled by exchange., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

The magnetic correlations in the quasi-two dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice system Zn2VO(PO4)2 have been investigated by neutron diffraction technique. A long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below 3.75 K (TN) has been observed with a reduced moment of 0.66(2) {\mu}B per V ion at 1.5 K. In a given ab plane, the AFM spin arrangement is N\'eel type and the AFM layers are coupled ferromagnetically along the c axis. Remarkably, we have observed a pure 2D short-range AFM ordering in the ab plane above TN. Interestingly, the coexistence of diffuse magnetic scattering and three dimensional antiferromagnetic Bragg peaks has been found below TN, indicating the presence of spin-waves as confirmed by our calculation using the linear spin-wave theory. We have measured neutron diffraction patterns in a single crystal sample of the pyrochlore compound Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in the antiferromagnetic phase (T=0.3\,K), as a function of the magnetic field, up to 6\,T, applied along the [110] direction. We determine all the characteristics of the magnetic structure throughout the quantum critical point at $H_c$=2\,T. As a main result, all Er moments align along the field at $H_c$ and their values reach a minimum. Using a four-sublattice self-consistent calculation, we show that the evolution of the magnetic structure and the value of the critical field are rather well reproduced using the same anisotropic exchange tensor as that accounting for the local paramagnetic susceptibility. In contrast, an isotropic exchange tensor does not match the moment variations through the critical point. The model also accounts semi-quantitatively for other experimental data previously measured, such as the field dependence of the heat capacity, energy of the dispersionless inelastic modes and transition temperature., Comment: 7 pages; 8 figures

We have performed new neutron diffuse scattering measurements in Fe$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$ solid solutions, in a concentration range 0$<$x$<$0.15, where the atomic distribution shows an inversion of the short range order. By optimizing the signal-background ratio, we obtain an accurate determination of the concentration of inversion x$_0$ =0.110(5). We determine the near neighbor atomic short range order parameters and pair potentials, which change sign at x$_0$. We studied the field-induced magnetic structures of the Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore by single-crystal neutron diffraction with a magnetic field applied along a [110] axis, focusing on the influence of a small misalignment. Both induced magnetic structures with k=0 and k=(0,0,1) propagation vectors are found to be sensitive to the misalignment, which controls the magnitude and orientation of the Tb moments involved in the beta chains, with local [111] anisotropy axis perpendicular to the field. For k=0, spin-ice-like structures are observed for a misalignment of a few degrees, whereas other structures, where the Tb-beta moments flip by "melting" on the field axis, occur when the field is perfectly aligned. The field evolution of the k=0 structure is well reproduced by a molecular field model with anisotropic exchange. We have studied the Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ frustrated magnet by neutron diffraction under isotropic pressure of 4.6 GPa, combined with uniaxial pressure of 0.3 GPa, in the temperature range 0.06 K$<$T$<$100 K. Magnetic order persists under pressure but the ordered spin ice structure stabilized at ambient pressure below 1.3 K partly transforms into an antiferromagnetic one. The long range ordered moment at 0.06 K is reduced under pressure, which is interpreted by a pressure induced enhancement of the spin liquid fluctuations. Above the ordering transition, short range spin correlations are affected by pressure, and ferromagnetic correlations are suppressed. We have performed high resolution neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the frustrated multiferroic hexagonal compounds RMnO3 (R=Ho, Yb, Sc, Y), which provide evidence of a strong magneto-elastic coupling in the the whole family. We can correlate the atomic positions, the type of magnetic structure and the nature of the spin waves whatever the R ion and temperature. The key parameter is the position of the Mn ions in the unit cell with respect to a critical threshold of 1/3, which determines the sign of the coupling between Mn triangular planes., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We studied the field induced magnetic order in R$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_7$ pyrochlore compounds with either uniaxial (R=Ho, Tb) or planar (R=Er, Yb) anisotropy, by polarized neutron diffraction. The determination of the local susceptibility tensor \{$\chi_\parallel,\chi_\perp$\} provides a universal description of the field induced structures in the paramagnetic phase (2-270 K), whatever the field value (1-7 T) and direction. Comparison of the thermal variations of $\chi_\parallel$ and $\chi_\perp$ with calculations using the rare earth crystal field shows that exchange and dipolar interactions must be taken into account. By using polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we show that the spin-lattice quantum entanglement in mutliferroics results in hybrid elementary excitations, involving spin and lattice degrees of freedom. These excitations can be considered as multiferroic Godstone modes. We argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction could be at the origin of this hybridization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have studied the field induced magnetic structures in the spin liquid Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, in a wide temperature (0.3$<$$T$$<$270 K) and field (0$<$$H$$<$7 T) range, by single crystal neutron diffraction with $\bf{H}$ // [110] axis. We combined unpolarized neutron data with polarized ones, analyzed within the local susceptibility model. A ferromagnetic-like structure with $\bf{k}$ = 0 propagation vector is induced, whose local order at low field and low temperature is akin to spin ice. The four Tb ions separate in $\alpha$ and $\beta$ chains having different values of the magnetic moments, which is quantitatively explained by taking the crystal field anisotropy into account. Above 2 T and below 2 K, an antiferromagnetic-like structure with $\bf{k}$ = (0,0,1) is induced besides the $\bf{k}$ = 0 structure. It shows a reentrant behavior and extends over a finite length scale. It occurs together with a broadening of the nuclear peaks, which suggests a field induced distortion and magnetostriction effect., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have studied magnetically frustrated Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ by neutron diffraction and high resolution energy-resolved neutron scattering. At 0.1 K, we observe short range magnetic correlations with a typical scale of 4 \AA, close to the near neighbor distance between Tb$^{3+}$ ions. %(3.686 \AA), This short range order coexists with ferromagnetic correlations and long range spin ice order at the scales of 18 and 190 \AA, respectively. Spin dynamics was investigated at a time scale down to 10$^{-9}$s, by energy-resolved experiments on a backscattering spectrometer. We observe a freezing of the spin dynamics for all length-scales, with a strong slowing down of the spin fluctuations when long range order settles in. The magnetic ordering of the hexagonal multiferroic compound YbMnO$_3$ has been studied between 100 K and 1.5 K by combining neutron powder diffraction, $^{170}$Yb M\"ossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The Yb moments of the two crystallographic sites order at two different temperatures, the $4b$ site together with the Mn moments (at $T_N \simeq$85 K) and the $2a$ site well below (at 3.5 K). The temperature dependences of the Mn and Yb moments are explained within a molecular field model, showing that the $4b$ and $2a$ sites order via Yb-Mn and Yb-Yb interactions respectively. A simple picture taking into account the local Mn environment of the Rare earth R ($4b$) ion is proposed to couple R and Mn orders in hexagonal RMnO$_3$ manganites. Two geometrically frustrated pyrochlore stannates, undergoing long range magnetic order below 1K, were investigated at very low temperature. Anomalies in the behaviour of hyperfine quantities are found, by 155Gd Mossbauer spectroscopy in Gd2Sn2O7 and by low temperature specific heat measurements in Tb2Sn2O7. They are interpreted in terms of fluctuations of the correlated Gd or Tb spins, using a model two-level system (the nuclear spins) submitted to a randomly fluctuating (hyperfine) field., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

R$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ compounds show a ferromagnetic metal-insulator spin glass transition tuned by the radius of the rare earth ion R$^{3+}$. We have studied Gd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ located on the verge of the transition, by neutron diffraction on a $^{160}$Gd isotopic sample, $\mu$SR and X ray diffraction using the synchrotron radiation. All measurements were done both at ambient and under applied pressure. At ambient pressure, a ferromagnetic state is observed below the Curie temperature (T$_{\rm C}$ = 70 K). The ordered magnetic moments at 1.7 K are parallel and equal to 5.7(5) $\mu_{\rm B}$ and 0.8(2) $\mu_{\rm B}$ for Gd and Mo, respectively. The relaxation rate measured by $\mu$SR evidences strong spin fluctuations below T$_{\rm C}$ and down to the lowest temperature (6.6 K). A spin reorientation occurs in the range 20 K$<$T$<$T$_{\rm C}$. The ferromagnetic state is strongly unstable under pressure. T$_{\rm C}$ sharply decreases (down to 38 K at 1.3 GPa) and Bragg peaks start to coexist with mesoscopic ferromagnetic correlations. The ordered moments decrease under pressure. At 2.7 GPa long range magnetic order completely breaks down. In this spin glass state, Gd-Gd spin correlations remain ferromagnetic with a correlation length limited to the fourth neighbor, and Gd-Mo spin correlations turn to antiferromagnetic. We have studied (Tb$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores by neutron diffraction and $\mu$SR at ambient and under applied pressure. Substitution of Tb for La expands the lattice and induces a change from a spin-glass like state ({\itshape x}=0) to a non collinear ferromagnet ({\itshape x}=0.2). In the ferromagnetic structure, the Tb moments orient close to their local anisotropy axis as for an ordered spin ice, while the Mo moments orient close to the net moment. The $\mu$SR dynamical relaxation rate shows a cusp-like peak at the Curie temperature T$_C$ and a broad anomaly at T$^\star$$<$T$_C$, suggesting a second transition of local or dynamical nature. Under pressure, the long range order breaks down and a spin glass-like state is recovered. The whole set of data provide a microscopic picture of the spin correlations and fluctuations in the region of the ferromagnetic-spin glass threshold., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

In the pyrochlore compounds, Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, only the Tb$^{3+}$ ions are magnetic. They exhibit quite abnormal -- and, in view of their chemical similarity, strikingly different -- magnetic behaviour, as probed by neutron diffraction at ambient and applied pressure. Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is a cooperative paramagnet (`spin liquid'), without long range order at ambient pressure; however, it does become ordered under pressure. By contrast, Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ enters an "ordered spin ice" state already at ambient pressure. We analyse a simple model which already clearly exhibits some of the qualitative features observed experimentally. High resolution time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on Tb2Ti2O7 reveal a rich low temperature phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field applied along [110]. In zero field at T=0.4 K, terbium titanate is a highly correlated cooperative paramagnet with disordered spins residing on a pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Application of a small field condenses much of the magnetic diffuse scattering, characteristic of the disordered spins, into a new Bragg peak characteristic of a polarized paramagnet. Neutron diffraction studies of antiferromagnetic CoO confined to a vycor type porous glass demonstrate a continuous magnetic phase transition with a decreased N\'eel temperature and reduced magnetic moment as compared with the bulk., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

We have studied the spin liquid Tb$\_2$Sn$\_2$O$\_7$ by neutron diffraction and specific heat measurements. Below about 2 K, the magnetic correlations change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. Magnetic order settles in two steps, with a smeared transition at 1.3(1) K then an abrupt transition at 0.87(2) K. A new magnetic structure is observed, not predicted by current models, with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic character. It suggests that the spin liquid degeneracy is lifted by dipolar interactions combined with a finite anisotropy along $<111>$ axes. In the ground state, the Tb$^{3+}$ ordered moment is reduced with respect to the free ion moment (9 $\mu\_{\rm B}$). The moment value of 3.3(3) $\mu\_{\rm B}$ deduced from the specific heat is much smaller than derived from neutron diffraction of 5.9(1) $\mu\_{\rm B}$. This difference is interpreted by the persistence of slow collective magnetic fluctuations down to the lowest temperatures.

Neutron diffraction studies of antiferromagnetic MnO confined to MCM-41 type matrices with channel diameters 24-87 A demonstrate a continuous magnetic phase transition in contrast to a discontinuous first order transition in the bulk. The character of the magnetic transition transforms with decreasing channel diameter, showing the decreasing critical exponent and transition temperature, however the latter turns out to be above the N\'eel temperature for the bulk. X-ray diffraction experiments were performed on MnO confined in mesoporous silica SBA-15 and MCM-41 matrices with different channel diameters. The measured patterns were analyzed by profile analysis and compared to numerical simulations of the diffraction from confined nanoparticles. From the lineshape and the specific shift of the diffraction reflections it was shown that the embedded objects form ribbon-like structures in the SBA-15 matrices with channels diameters of 47-87 {\AA}, and nanowire-like structures in the MCM-41 matrices with channels diameters of 24-35 {\AA}. In the latter case the confined nanoparticles appear to be narrower than the channel diameters. Na$_x$CoO$_2$, the parent compound of the recently synthesized superconductor Na$_x$CoO$_2$:$y$H$_2$O, exhibits bulk antiferromagnetic order below $\sim20$ K for 0.75 $\leq x \leq$ 0.9. We have performed neutron scattering experiments in which we observed Bragg reflections corresponding to A-type antiferromagnetic order in a Na$_{0.82}$CoO$_2$ single crystal and characterized the corresponding spin-wave dispersions. The spin waves exhibit a strongly energy-dependent linewidth. The in-plane and out-of-plane exchange constants resulting from a fit to a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model are similar in magnitude, which is unexpected in view of the layered crystal structure of Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$. By neutron scattering, we have studied the spin correlations and spin fluctuations in frustrated Laves hydrides, where magnetic disorder sets in the topologically frustrated Mn lattice. Below the transition towards short range magnetic order, static spin clusters coexist with fluctuating and alsmost uncorrelated spins. The magnetic response shows a complexe lineshape, connected with the presence of the magnetic inhomogeneities. Its analysis shows the existence of two different processes, relaxation and local excitations, for the spin fluctuations below the transition. The paramagnetic fluctuations are discussed in comparison with classical spin glasses, cluster glasses, and non Fermi liquid itinerant magnets.

Using elastic neutron scattering, we evidence a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) order (AF) in the superconducting (SC) high-$\rm T_c$ cuprate $\rm YBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Co_y)_3O_{7+\delta}$ (y=0.013, $\rm T_c$=93 K). As in the Co-free system, the spin excitation spectrum is dominated by a magnetic resonance peak at 41 meV but with a reduced spectral weight. The substitution of Co thus leads to a state where AF and SC cohabit showing that the CuO$_2$ plane is a highly antiferromagnetically polarizable medium even for a sample where T$_c$ remains optimum., Comment: 3 figures

We performed high resolution diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Mn_{12}-acetate. Using a very high energy resolution, we could separate the energy levels corresponding to the splitting of the lowest S multiplet. Data were analyzed within a single spin model (S=10 ground state), using a spin Hamiltonian with parameters up to 4^{th} order. The non regular spacing of the transition energies unambiguously shows the presence of high order terms in the anisotropy (D= -0.457(2) cm^{-1}, B_4^0 = -2.33(4) 10^{-5}cm^{-1}). The relative intensity of the lowest energy peaks is very sensitive to the small transverse term, supposed to be mainly responsible for quantum tunneling. This allows an accurate determination of this term in zero magnetic field (B_4^4 = \pm 3.0(5) 10^{-5} cm^{-1}).
