Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of great astrochemical and astrobiological interest due to their potential to form prebiotic molecules. We analyse the 7.7 and 8.6 ${\mu}$m PAH bands in 126 predominantly starburst-dominated galaxies extracted from the Spitzer/IRS ATLAS project. Based on the peak positions of these bands, we classify them into the different A, B, and C Peeters' classes, which allows us to address the potential characteristics of the PAH emitting population. We compare this analysis with previous work focused on the 6.2 ${\mu}$m PAH band for the same sample. For the first time in the literature, this statistical analysis is performed on a sample of galaxies. In our sample, the 7.7 ${\mu}$m complex is equally distributed in A and B object's class while the 8.6 ${\mu}$m band presents more B class sources. Moreover, 39 per cent of the galaxies were distributed into A class objects for both 6.2 and 7.7 ${\mu}$m bands and only 18 per cent received the same A classification for the three bands. The "A A A" galaxies presented higher temperatures and less dust in their interstellar medium. Considering the redshift range covered by our sample, the distribution of the three bands into the different Peeters' classes reveals a potential cosmological evolution in the molecular nature of the PAHs that dominate the interstellar medium in these galaxies, where B class objects seem to be more frequent at higher redshifts and, therefore, further studies have to be addressed., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

The infrared signatures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are observed in a variety of astrophysical objects, including the circumnuclear medium of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These are sources of highly energetic photons (0.2 to 10 keV), exposing the PAHs to a harsh environment. In this work, we examined experimentally the photoionization and photostability of naphthalene (C$_{10}$H$_{8}$), anthracene (C$_{14}$H$_{10}$), 2-methyl-anthracene (C$_{14}$H$_{9}$CH$_{3}$) and pyrene (C$_{16}$H$_{10}$) upon interaction with photons of 275, 310 and 2500 eV. The measurements were performed at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory using time-of-flight mass-spectrometry (TOF-MS). We determined the absolute photoionization and photodissociation cross sections as a function of the incident photon energy; the production rates of singly, doubly and triply charged ions; and the molecular half-lives in regions surrounding AGNs. Even considering moderate X-ray optical depth values ($\tau = 4.45$) due to attenuation by the dusty torus, the half-lives are not long enough to account for PAH detection. Our results suggest that a more sophisticated interplay between PAHs and dust grains should be present in order to circumvent molecular destruction. We could not see any significant difference in the half-life values by increasing the size of the PAH carbon backbone, N$_C$, from 10 to 16. However, we show that the multiple photoionization rates are significantly greater than the single ones, irrespective of the AGN source. The merger remnant NGC 34 is a local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) hosting a nuclear starburst and a hard X-ray source associated with a putative, obscured Seyfert~2 nucleus. In this work, we use adaptive optics assisted near infrared (NIR) integral field unit observations of this galaxy to map the distribution and kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in its inner $\mathrm{1.2\,kpc \times 1.2\,kpc}$, with a spatial resolution of 70~pc. The molecular and ionized gas kinematics is consistent with a disc with projected major axis along a mean PA~=~$\mathrm{-9^{\circ}.2 \pm 0^{\circ}.9}$. Our main findings are that NGC~34 hosts an AGN and that the nuclear starburst is distributed in a circumnuclear star-formation ring with inner and outer radii of $\approx$~60 and 180~pc, respectively, as revealed by maps of the $\mathrm{[Fe II] / Pa\beta}$ and $\mathrm{H_{2} / Br\gamma}$ emission-line ratios, and corroborated by PCA Tomography analysis. The spatially resolved NIR diagnostic diagram of NGC~34 also identifies a circumnuclear structure dominated by processes related to the stellar radiation field and a nuclear region where $[Fe II]$ and H$_2$ emissions are enhanced relative to the hydrogen recombination lines. We estimate that the nuclear X-ray source can account for the central H$_2$ enhancement and conclude that $[Fe II]$ and H$_2$ emissions are due to a combination of photo-ionization by young stars, excitation by X-rays produced by the AGN and shocks. These emission lines show nuclear, broad, blue-shifted components that can be interpreted as nuclear outflows driven by the AGN., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures. We mapped the stellar population and emission gas properties in the nuclear region of NGC 6868 using datacubes extracted with Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) in the Integral Field Unit (IFU) mode. To obtain the star-formation history of this galaxy we used the starlight code together with the new generation of MILES simple stellar population models. The stellar population dominating (95% in light fraction) the central region of NGC 6868 is old and metal rich (~10 Gyr, 2.2 Z⊙). We also derived the kinematics and emission line fluxes of ionized gas with the IFSCube package. A rotation disk is clearly detected in the nuclear region of the galaxy and no broad components were detected. Also, there is a region where the emission lines disappear almost completely, probably due to diffuse ionized gas component. Channel maps, diagnostic diagrams and stellar kinematics are still under analysis.

We used Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) in the Integral Field Unit mode to map the stellar population, emission line flux distributions and gas kinematics in the inner kpc of NGC 5044. From the stellar populations synthesis we found that the continuum emission is dominated by old high metallicity stars ($\sim$13 Gyr, 2.5Z$\odot$). Also, its nuclear emission is diluted by a non thermal emission, which we attribute to the presence of a weak active galactic nuclei (AGN). In addition, we report for the first time a broad component (FWHM$\sim$ 3000km$s^{-1}$) in the H$\alpha$ emission line in the nuclear region of NGC 5044. By using emission line ratio diagnostic diagrams we found that two dominant ionization processes coexist, while the nuclear region (inner 200 pc) is ionized by a low luminosity AGN, the filamentary structures are consistent with being excited by shocks. The H$\alpha$ velocity field shows evidence of a rotating disk, which has a velocity amplitude of $\sim$240kms$^{-1}$ at $\sim$ 136 pc from the nucleus. Assuming a Keplerian approach we estimated that the mass inside this radius is $1.9\times10^9$ $M_{\odot}$, which is in agreement with the value obtained through the M-$\sigma$ relation, $ M_{SMBH}=1.8\pm1.6\times10^{9}M_{\odot}$. Modelling the ionized gas velocity field by a rotating disk component plus inflows towards the nucleus along filamentary structures, we obtain a mass inflow rate of $\sim$0.4 M$_\odot$. We present an observational study of the impacts of the interactions on the stellar population in a sample of galaxy pairs. Long-slit spectra in the wavelength range 3440-7300 {\AA} obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) at Gemini South for fifteen galaxies in nine close pairs were used. The spatial distributions of the stellar population contributions were obtained using the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. Taking into account the different contributions to the emitted light, we found that most of the galaxies in our sample are dominated by the young/intermediate stellar populations. This result differs from the one derived for isolated galaxies where the old stellar population dominates the disc surface brightness. We interpreted such different behavior as being due to the effect of gas inflows along the disk of interacting galaxies on the star formation in a time scale of the order of about 2Gyr. We also found that, in general, the secondary galaxy of the pairs has a higher contribution of the young stellar population than the primary one. We compared the estimated values of the stellar and nebular extinctions derived from the synthesis method and the H{\alpha}/H\b{eta} emission-line ratio finding that the nebular extinctions are systematically higher than stellar ones by about a factor of 2. We did not find any correlation between nebular and stellar metallicities. We neither found a correlation between stellar metallicities and ages while a positive correlation between nebular metallicities and stellar ages was obtained, with the older regions being the most metal-rich., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Understanding the interplay between the phenomena of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and starbursts remains an open issue in studies of galaxy evolution. The galaxy NGC 34 is the remnant of the merger of two former gas-rich disc galaxies and it also hosts a strong nuclear starburst. In this work, we map the ionized and molecular gas present in the nuclear regions of the galaxy NGC 34 using adaptive optics (AO) assisted near infrared (NIR) integral field unity (IFU) observations. Our main goals are to better constrain the energy source of this object and to use NGC 34 as a laboratory to probe the AGN-starburst connection in the context of galaxy evolution and AGN feeding and feedback processes.

We present a spatially resolved stellar population study of the inner ∼200 pc radius of NGC 4303 based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with SINFONI/VLT at a spatial resolution of 40–80 pc and using the STARLIGHT code. We found that the distribution of the stellar populations presents a spatial variation, suggesting an age stratification. Three main structures stand out. Two nuclear blobs, one composed by young stars (t ≤ 50 Myr) and one with intermediate-age stars (50 Myr < t ≤ 2 Gyr), both shifted from the centre. The third one is an internal intermediate-age spiral arm-like structure, surrounding the blob of young stars. Our results indicate that star formation has occurred through multiple bursts in this source. Furthermore, the youngest stellar populations (t 2 Gyr) are distributed along a circumnuclear star-forming ring with r ∼ 250 pc. The ring displays star formation rates (SFRs) in the range of 0.002–0.14 Myr, favouring the ‘pearls-on-a-string’ scenario. The old underlying bulge stellar population component (t > 2 Gyr) is distributed outside the two blob structures. For the nuclear region (inner ∼60 pc radius) we derived an SFR of 0.43 M yr and found no signatures of non-thermal featureless continuum and hot dust emission, supporting the scenario in which an LLAGN/LINER-like source is hidden in the centre of NGC 4303. We performed a near-infrared (NIR; ~1.0 -2.4 μm) stellar population study in a sample of early-type galaxies. The synthesis was performed using five different evolutionary population synthesis libraries of models. Our main results can be summarized as follows: low-spectral-resolution libraries are not able to produce reliable results when applied to the NIR alone, with each library finding a different dominant population. The two newest higher resolution models, on the other hand, perform considerably better, finding consistent results to each other and to literature values. We also found that optical results are consistent with each other even for lower resolution models. We also compared optical and NIR results and found out that lower resolution models tend to disagree in the optical and in the NIR, with higher fraction of young populations in the NIR and dust extinction ~1 mag higher than optical values. For higher resolution models, optical and NIR results tend to agree much better, suggesting that a higher spectral resolution is fundamental to improve the quality of the results.© 2018 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society., LGDH thanks CAPES and CNPq. Analyses of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature profiles, especially the 6.2 $\mu$m feature, could indicate the presence of nitrogen incorporated in their aromatic rings. In this work, 155 predominantly starburst-dominated galaxies (including HII regions and Seyferts, for example), extracted from the Spitzer/IRS ATLAS project (Hern\'an-Caballero & Hatziminaoglou 2011), have their 6.2 $\mu$m profiles fitted allowing their separation into the Peeters' A, B and C classes (Peeters et al. 2002). 67% of these galaxies were classified as class A, 31% were as class B and 2% as class C. Currently class A sources, corresponding to a central wavelength near 6.22 $\mu$m, seem only to be explained by polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANH, Hudgins et al. 2005), whereas class B may represent a mix between PAHs and PANHs emissions or different PANH structures or ionization states. Therefore, these spectra suggest a significant presence of PANHs in the interstellar medium (ISM) of these galaxies that could be related to their starburst-dominated emission. These results also suggest that PANHs constitute another reservoir of nitrogen in the Universe, in addition to the nitrogen in the gas phase and ices of the ISM.

We employ the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility's near-infrared spectrograph SpeX at 0.8-2.4$��$m to investigate the spatial distribution of the stellar populations (SPs) in four well known Starburst galaxies: NGC34, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714. We use the STARLIGHT code updated with the synthetic simple stellar populations models computed by Maraston (2005, M05). Our main results are that the NIR light in the nuclear surroundings of the galaxies is dominated by young/intermediate age SPs ($t \leq 2\times10^9$yr), summing from $\sim$40\% up to 100\% of the light contribution. In the nuclear aperture of two sources (NGC1614 and NGC3310) we detected a predominant old SP component ($t > 2\times10^9$yr), while for NGC34 and NGC7714 the younger component prevails. Furthermore, we found evidence of a circumnuclear star formation ring-like structure and a secondary nucleus in NGC1614, in agreement with previous studies. We also suggest that the merger/interaction experienced by three of the galaxies studied, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714 can explain the lower metallicity values derived for the young SP component of these sources. In this scenario the fresh unprocessed metal poorer gas from the destroyed/interacting companion galaxy is driven to the centre of the galaxies and mixed with the central region gas, before star formation takes place. In order to deepen our analysis, we performed the same procedure of SP synthesis using Maraston (2011, M11) EPS models. Our results show that the newer and higher resolution M11 models tend to enhance the old/intermediate age SP contribution over the younger ages.

Mid-infrared (MIR) spectra observed with Gemini/Michelle were used to study the nuclear region of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 (Sy 2) galaxy Mrk 3 at a spatial resolution of $\sim$200 pc. No polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission bands were detected in the N-band spectrum of Mrk 3. However, intense [Ar III] 8.99 $\mu$m, [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m and [Ne II] 12.8 $\mu$m ionic emission-lines, as well as silicate absorption feature at 9.7$\mu$m have been found in the nuclear extraction ($\sim$200 pc). We also present subarcsecond-resolution Michelle N-band image of Mrk 3 which resolves its circumnuclear region. This diffuse MIR emission shows up as a wings towards East-West direction closely aligned with the S-shaped of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) observed at optical [O III]$\lambda$5007\AA image with Hubble/FOC. The nuclear continuum spectrum can be well represented by a theoretical torus spectral energy distribution (SED), suggesting that the nucleus of Mrk 3 may host a dusty toroidal structure predicted by the unified model of active galactic nucleus (AGN). In addition, the hydrogen column density (N$_H\,=\,4.8^{+3.3}_{-3.1}\times\,10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) estimated with a torus model for Mrk 3 is consistent with the value derived from X-ray spectroscopy. The torus model geometry of Mrk 3 is similar to that of NGC 3281, both Compton-thick galaxies, confirmed through fitting the 9.7$\mu$m silicate band profile. This results might provide further evidence that the silicate-rich dust can be associated with the AGN torus and may also be responsible for the absorption observed at X-ray wavelengths in those galaxies.

We analyse a set of optical-to-near-infrared long-slit nuclear spectra of 16 infrared-luminous spiral galaxies. All of the studied sources present H2 emission, which reflects the star-forming nature of our sample, and they clearly display H I emission lines in the optical. Their continua contain many strong stellar absorption lines, with the most common features due to Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Na I, Mg I, in addition to prominent absorption bands of TiO, VO, ZrO, CN, and CO. We report a homogeneous set of equivalent width (EW) measurements for 45 indices, from optical to NIR species for the 16 star-forming galaxies as well as for 19 early-type galaxies where we collected the data from the literature. This selected set of emission and absorption-feature measurements can be used to test predictions of the forthcoming generations of stellar population models. We find correlations among the different absorption features and propose here correlations between optical and NIR indices, as well as among different NIR indices, and compare them with model predictions. Although for the optical absorption features the models consistently agree with the observations, the NIR indices are much harder to interpret. For early-type spirals the measurements agree roughly with the models, while for star-forming objects they fail to predict the strengths of these indices.

It has been well established in the past decades that the central black hole masses of galaxies correlate with dynamical properties of their harbouring bulges. This notion begs the question of whether there are causal connections between the AGN and its immediate vicinity in the host galaxy. In this paper we analyse the presence of circumnuclear star formation in a sample of 15 AGN using mid-infrared observations. The data consist of a set of 11.3{\mm} PAH emission and reference continuum images, taken with ground based telescopes, with sub-arcsecond resolution. By comparing our star formation estimates with AGN accretion rates, derived from X-ray luminosities, we investigate the validity of theoretical predictions for the AGN-starburst connection. Our main results are: i) circumnuclear star formation is found, at distances as low as tens of parsecs from the nucleus, in nearly half of our sample (7/15); ii) star formation luminosities are correlated with the bolometric luminosity of the AGN ($L_{AGN}$) only for objects with $L_{AGN} \ge 10^{42}\,\,{\rm erg\,\,s^{-1}}$; iii) low luminosity AGNs ($L_{AGN} < 10^{42}\,\,{\rm erg\,\,s^{-1}}$) seem to have starburst luminosities far greater than their bolometric luminosities., 12 pages, 10 figures

We study the kinematics and excitation mechanisms of H 2 and [Fe ii] lines in a sample of 67 emission-line galaxies with Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX near-infrared (0.8–2.4 μm) spectroscopy together with new photoionization models. H 2 emission lines are systematically narrower than narrow-line region lines, suggesting that the two are, very likely, kinematically disconnected. The new models and emission-line ratios show that the thermal excitation plays an important role not only in active galactic nuclei but also in star-forming galaxies. The importance of the thermal excitation in star-forming galaxies may be associated with the presence of supernova remnants close to the region emitting H 2 lines. This hypothesis is further supported by the similarity between vibrational and rotational temperatures of H 2 . We confirm that the diagram involving the line ratios H 2 2.121 μm/Brγ and [Fe ii] 1.257 μm/Paβ is an efficient tool for separating emission-line objects according to their dominant types of activities. We suggest new limits to the line ratios in order to discriminate between the different types of nuclear activities.

We present new maps of emission-line flux distributions and kinematics in both ionized (traced by HI and [Fe II] lines) and molecular (H2) gas of the inner 0.7 × 0.7 kpc2 of the galaxy NGC 4303, with a spatial resolution 40-80 pc and velocity resolution 90-150 km s-1 obtained from near-IR integral field spectroscopy using the Very Large Telescope instrument SINFONI. The most prominent feature is a 200-250 pc ring of circumnuclear star-forming regions. The emission from ionized and molecular gas shows distinct flux distributions: while the strongest HI and [Fe II] emission comes from regions in the west side of the ring (ages ~ 4 Myr), the H2 emission is strongest at the nucleus and in the east side of the ring (ages > 10 Myr). We find that regions of enhanced hot H2 emission are anti-correlated with those of enhanced [Fe II] and HI emission, which can be attributed to post-starburst regions that do not have ionizing photons anymore but still are hot enough (~2000 K) to excite the H2 molecule. The line ratios are consistent with the presence of an active galactic nucleus at the nucleus. The youngest regions have stellar masses in the range 0.3-1.5 × 105 M and ionized and hot molecular gas masses of ~0.25-1.2 × 104 M and ~2.5-5M, respectively. The stellar and gas velocity fields show a rotation pattern, with the gas presenting larger velocity amplitudes than the stars, with a deviation observed for the H2 along the nuclear bar, where increased velocity dispersion is also observed, possibly associated with non-circular motions along the bar. We present photometric parameters of the galaxies in the direction of the galaxy cluster LCDCS-S001 and improved kinematic parameters from new spectroscopic observations. From GMOS multi-object spectroscopy, we have been able to confirm a new set of 10 cluster members, resulting in a total 22 objects from previous observations. With these data, a dispersion velocity of σ= 887 ± 249 km s−1, a virial radius R200= 0.98 ± 0.22 Mpc and a mass of M200= (5.4 ± 2.8) × 1014 M⊙ have been derived. From GMOS i′ and r′ images, we have extracted the individual sources and derived their magnitudes, relative positions and the bulge+disc brightness profile decomposition. We show that the cluster has an elongated morphology along the north–south direction, with ellipticity ɛ= 0.49 ± 0.14, well represented by a King model with a core radius RC= 283 ± 66 kpc, above the typical core radii of regular clusters. It shows at least one local overdensity, north-west from the cluster centre, very compact and with a very high central density. The i′ luminosity function of LCDCS-S001 has an almost flat faint-end, α=−1.16 ± 0.18. As for the constituent galaxies, we have found that a large fraction of the cluster galaxies are late-type systems. Extensive simulations were made in order to verify the validity of our conclusions. We discuss the implication of these results for the evolutionary status of LCDCS-S001 and conclude that this cluster is still dynamically young.

We present a description of the CL-based package XDSPRES, which aims at being a complete reducing facility for cross-dispersed spectra taken with the Ohio State Infrared Imager/Spectrometer, as installed at the SOAR telescope. This instrument provides spectra in the range between 1.2um and 2.35um in a single exposure, with resolving power of R ~ 1200. XDSPRES consists of two tasks, namely xdflat and doosiris. The former is a completely automated code for preparing normalized flat field images from raw flat field exposures. Doosiris was designed to be a complete reduction pipeline, requiring a minimum of user interaction. General steps towards a fully reduced spectrum are explained, as well as the approach adopted by our code. We present SOAR/OSIRIS cross-dispersed NIR integrated spectra of 12 Galactic globular clusters that are employed to test Maraston (2005, M05) NIR EPS models, and to provide spectral observational constraints to calibrate future models. We measured Ew of the most prominent NIR absorption features. Optical Ew were also measured. The globular clusters Ew were compared with model predictions with ages within 4-15 Gyr, and metallicities between 1/200 and 2 Zsun. Observed integrated colours were also compared with models. The NIR integrated spectra among our sample appear qualitatively similar in most the absorption features. The M05 models can properly predict the optical Ew observed in globular clusters. Regarding the NIR, they do underestimate the strength of Mg I 1.49mum, but they can reproduce the observed Ew of Fe I 1.58mum, Si I 1.59mum, and CO 2.29mum, in about half of our sample. The remaining objects require the inclusion of intermediate-age populations. Thus, we suggest that the presence of C- and O-rich stars in models is important to reproduce the observed strengths of metallic lines. Another possibility is the lack of alpha-enhancement in the models. In the case of the optical and NIR Fe I lines, standard models and those that include blue horizontal branch stars, produce similar results. A similar trend is observed for Na I 5895A, while in the case of the G-band, the models with blue horizontal branch do describe better the observations. For most of the sample the optical to NIR colours are well described by the M05 models. In general, M05 models can provide reliable information on the NIR stellar population of galaxies, but only when Ew and colours are taken together, in other words, Ew and continuum fluxes should be simultaneously fitted. However, the results should be taken with caution, since the models tend to predict results biased towards young ages.

We report the first two-dimensional stellar population synthesis in the near-infrared of the nuclear region of an active galaxy, namely Mrk1066. We have used integral field spectroscopy with adaptive optics at the Gemini North Telescope to map the to map the age distribution of the stellar population in the inner 300 pc at a spatial resolution of 35 pc. An old stellar population component (age >5Gyr) is dominant within the inner ~160pc, which we attribute to the galaxy bulge. Beyond this region, up to the borders of the observation field (~300 pc), intermediate age components (0.3-0.7Gyr) dominate. We find a spatial correlation between this intermediate age component and a partial ring of low stellar velocity dispersions (sigma). Low-sigma nuclear rings have been observed in other active galaxies and our result for Mrk1066 suggests that they are formed by intermediate age stars. This age is consistent with an origin for the low-sigma rings in a past event which triggered an inflow of gas and formed stars which still keep the colder kinematics (as compared to that of the bulge) of the gas from which they have formed. At the nucleus proper we detect, in addition, two unresolved components: a compact infrared source, consistent with an origin in hot dust with mass ~1.9x10^{-2} M_Sun, and a blue featureless power-law continuum, which contributes with only ~15% of the flux at 2.12 microns., 6 pages, 2 figs, accepted by ApJ

We employ IRTF SpeX NIR (0.8-2.4 microns) spectra to investigate the stellar population (SP), active galactic nuclei (AGN) featureless continuum (FC) and hot dust properties in 9 Sy 1 and 15 Sy 2 galaxies. Both the starlight code and the hot dust as an additional base element were used for the first time in this spectral range. We found evidence of correlation among the equivalent widths (W) Si I 1.59 microns x Mg I 1.58 microns, equally for both kinds of activity. Part of the W{Na I 2.21 microns} and W {CO 2.3 microns} strengths may be related to galaxy inclination. Our synthesis shows significant differences between Sy 1 and Sy 2 galaxies: the hot dust component is required to fit the K-band spectra of ~90% of the Sy 1 galaxies, and only of ~25% of the Sy 2; about 50 % of the Sy 2 galaxies require a $FC$ component contribution >20%, while this fraction increases to 60% in the Sy 1; also, in about 50 % of the Sy2, the combined FC and young components contribute with more than 20%, while this occurs in 90% of the Sy1, suggesting recent star formation in the central region. The central few hundred parsecs of our galaxy sample contain a substantial fraction of intermediate-age SPs with a mean metallicity near solar. Our SP synthesis confirms that the 1.1 micron CN band can be used as a tracer of intermediate-age SPs. The simultaneous fitting of SP, FC and hot dust components increased in ~150% the number of AGNs with hot dust detected and the mass estimated. The NIR emerges as an excellent window to study the stellar population of Sy 1 galaxies, as opposed to the usually heavily attenuated optical range. Our approach opens a new way to investigate and quantify the individual contribution of the three most important NIR continuum components observed in AGNs., The paper contains 14 figures and 5 tables. We present an observational study about the effects of the interactions in the kinematics, stellar population and abundances of the components of the galaxy pair AM2306-721. Rotation curves for the main and companion galaxies were obtained, showing a deprojected velocity amplitude of 175 km/s and 185 km/s, respectively. The interaction between the main and companion galaxies was modeled using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, with the result indicating that the current stage of the merger would be about 250 Myr after perigalacticum. The spatial variation in the distribution of the stellar population components in both galaxies was analysed by fitting combinations of stellar population models of different age groups. The central region of main galaxy is dominated by an old (5-10 Gyr) population, while significant contributions from a young (200 Myr) and intermediate (1 Gyr) components are found in the disk, being enhanced in the direction of the tidal features. The stellar population of the companion galaxy is overall much younger, being dominated by components with 1 Gyr or less, quite widely spread over the whole disk. Spatial profiles of the oxygen abundance were obtained from the a grid of photoionization models using the R23 line ratio. The disk of the main galaxy shows a clear radial gradient, while the companion galaxy presents an oxygen abundance relatively homogeneous across the disk. The absence of an abundance gradient in the secondary galaxy is interpreted in terms of mixing by gas flows from the outer parts to the center of the galaxy due to the gravitational interaction with the more massive primary.

We study the central (inner few hundred parsecs) stellar populations of four starburst galaxies (NGC34, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714) in the near-infrared (NIR), from 0.8 to 2.4microns, by fitting combinations of stellar population models of various ages and metallicities. The NIR spectra of these galaxies feature many absorption lines. For the first time, we fit simultaneously as much as 15 absorption features in the NIR. The observed spectra are best explained by stellar populations containing a sizable amount (20 to 56 % by mass) of ~1Gyr old stellar population with Thermally Pulsing-Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. We found that the metallicity of the stars which dominates the light is solar. Metallicities substantially different from solar give a worse fit. Though the ages and metallicities we estimate using the NIR spectroscopy are in agreement with values from the literature based on the UV/optical, we find older ages and a larger age spread. This may be due to the fact that the optical is mostly sensitive to the last episode of star formation, while the NIR better maintains the record of previous stellar generations. Another interesting result is that the reddening estimated from the whole NIR spectrum is considerably lower than that based on emission lines. Finally, we find a good agreement of the free emission line spectrum with photoionization models, using as input spectral energy distribution the synthetic composite template we derived as best-fit., 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

Context. Studies of interacting galaxies have shown that dwarf galaxies may be produced in tidal tails during collisions. Numerical simulations suggest that the total detachment of the tidal dwarf requires the companion's mass to be comparable to or higher than that of the parent galaxy. This would imply that minor mergers (interaction between unequal mass galaxies) might not form tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs). Aims. The objectives of the paper is to analyse the main properties of a sample of 116 HII regions previously selected from Ha images of 11 minor mergers of galaxies and discuss the nature of these regions comparing their properties with those observed in HII regions in normal and isolated galaxies and TDG candidates. Methods. Individual parameters such as: blue absolute magnitude, M B , Ha luminosity, £(Hα), star formation rate, SFR(Ha) and mass, M/M ⊙ of these regions were derived and compared with those of the HII regions in normal isolated galaxies, as well as in tidal dwarf candidates. Results. A full 62% of the HII regions are brighter than M B < -15 mag, which is an upper limit for giant HII complexes observed in the spiral arms of Sa and Sb galaxies. Five regions are as bright as the tidal dwarf candidates in the tidal tail of Arp 105. It was also found that 43 regions have Hα luminosities brighter than 10 40 erg s -1 , which is the upper luminosity limit for HII regions in normal Sc galaxies. The estimated stellar masses of 32 HII regions are 1 x 10 6 < M/M ⊙ < 3 x 10 7 . These values are comparable to those of young massive clusters (YMC). Conclusions. In our sample we have detected 9 HII regions presenting Ha luminosities which correspond to star formation rates higher than those found in normal HII regions in spiral galaxies. These regions are associated with very massive clusters (1 x 10 8 M ⊙ ) typical of TDGs.

We present spectroscopic and photometric analysis for eight field galaxies in the direction of the galaxy cluster LCDCS-S001. The spectra were obtained with the GMOS instrument in the Gemini South Observatory. The objects were selected in an i' band image and the multi-object spectroscopic observations were centered at 7500 A. For the galaxies ID 440 and ID 461 we have determined redshifts of z=0.7464 and z=0.7465, respectively. For the other six galaxies we have confirmed the redshift calculated by Rembold & Pastoriza (2006). The redshifts of the field galaxies are in the range of 0.2201 < z < 0.7784. We determined the blue and visual luminosities and they are brighter than M_B=-18.64. The galaxies ID 180, ID 266, ID 461 follow the Faber-Jackson relation of the Coma and Virgo early-type galaxies, and therefore do not present a brightening of the B luminosity as observed in galaxies at higher redshifts. The stellar velocity dispersion was measured for five galaxies and estimated to be in the range of 200 < sigma < 346 km/s. Lick indices were measured and used to determine the stellar population properties of galaxies ID 120 and ID 146, by means of spectral synthesis. The first galaxy, ID 120, presents in its spectrum absorption and emission lines, and we have found that the main contribution in the flux at lambda 5870 A is of a 0.1 Gyr stellar population of solar metallicity. For ID 146, the dominant flux contribution at lambda 4200 A, is provided by a stellar population of 10 Gyr of subsolar metallicity. From stellar population synthesis we estimated reddening values of E(B-V)=0.90 and E(B-V)=0.82 for ID 120 and ID 146, respectively. Context: The spatial distribution of the stellar populations inside a spheroidal system and their kinematical properties supply important informations about the formation process. Aims: We have performed a detailed stellar population analysis using long slit spectroscopic observations up to almost one effective radius of two different early-type galaxies of low density regions of the local Universe: NGC 1052, a E4 Liner prototype of a loose group that has a stellar rotating disc, and NGC 7796, a E1 of the field which shows a kinematically distinct core. The mean luminosity-weighted stellar age, metallicity, and alpha/Fe ratio along both photometric axes of them have been obtained in order to reconstruct the star formation history in their kinematically distinct subsystems. Methods: We have measured Lick indices and computed their radial gradients. They were compared with the predicted ones of simple stellar population models. We have also applied a stellar population synthesis. Results: The star characteristics are associated with their kinematics: they are older and alpha-enhanced in the bulge of NGC 1052 and core of NGC 7796, while they show a strong spread of alpha/Fe and age along the disc of NGC 1052 and an outwards radial decreasing of them outside the core of NGC 7796. The age variation is possibly connected to the alpha/Fe one. Conclusions: Both galaxies were formed by processes in which the star formation occurred firstly at the bulge (NGC 1052) and nucleus (NGC 7796) 12-15 Gyr ago on short timescales (0.1-1 Gyr) providing an efficient chemical enrichment by SN-II. In the disc of NGC 1052, there is some spread of age and formation timescales around its stars. In NGC 7796, the star formation timescale had some outwards radial increasing along both axes.

We present kinematic parameters and stellar population properties of selected galaxies in the high-redshift (z = 0.7) galaxy cluster LCDCS-S001, determined by spectroscopic data obtained with the Gemini multi-object spectrograph instrument in the Gemini South Observatory. The objects were selected in an ('-band cluster field image, and multi-object spectroscopic observations centred at 7500 A were performed for 40 objects. Spectral features were successfully identified for 20 objects, and used to determine the redshift of the cluster. We found that 12 objects are cluster members and estimate a median redshift of 0.709 for this cluster. The relative velocities of the cluster members were used to estimate the projected cluster mass, which was found to be 3.54 x 10 14+2.33 -1.41 M ⊙ . Lick and D n (4000) indices were measured and used to determine the stellar population properties of the galaxies, by means of a spectral synthesis through Bruzual & Charlot evolutive models. We found that the bulk of stellar population for the cluster members has a spectrum compatible with solar metallicity and an age between 3.0 and 7.0 Gyr; with only one exception, the flux contribution of younger (t ≤ 1.0 Gyr) stars in the spectra does not exceed 25 per cent at 4200 A. Emission [OII] lines were detected for four galaxies, all of which showing a stronger contribution of young stars compared with other cluster galaxies. The equivalent width of the [OII]λ3727 emission line was compared with Magris, Binette & Bruzual models for H n regions. We found good correspondence between our values and the theoretical predictions for solar metallicity and with star formation time-scales 1.0 < r < 3.0 Gyr.

Aims: We present a near-infrared spectral atlas of 47 active galactic nuclei (AGN), of all degrees of activity, in the wavelength interval of 0.8-2.4 microns, including the fluxes of the observed emission lines. We analyze the spectroscopic properties of the continuum and emission line spectra of the sources Methods: In order to exclude aperture and seeing effects we use near-infrared spectroscopy in the short cross-dispersed mode (SXD, 0.8-2.4 microns), taking the JHK-bands spectra simultaneously. Results: We present the most extensive NIR spectral atlas of AGN to date. This atlas offers a suitable database for studying the continuum and line emission properties of these objects in a region full of interesting features. The shape of the continuum of QSOs and Seyfert 1's are similar, being essentially flat in H and K band, in the J band, a strong variation is found. In Seyfert 2 galaxies, the continuum in the F_lambda X lambda space smoothly decreases from 1.2 microns redwards in almost all sources. In J, it smoothly rises bluewards in some sources while in others a small decreased in flux is observed. The spectra are dominated by strong emission features of H I, He I, He II, [S III] and conspicuous forbidden lines of low and high ionization species. Molecular lines of H2 are common features to most objects. The absence of O I and Fe II lines in Seyfert 2 galaxies give observational support to the fact that these lines are formated in the outermost portion of the broad line region. [P II] and coronal lines are detected in all degrees of activity. The [Fe II] 12570A/16436A line ratio becomes a reliable reddening indicator for the narrow-line region of Seyfert galaxies.

The stellar population of the central region of the galaxy NGC 720 has been investigated through longslit optical spectroscopy. The velocity dispersion and 13 Lick indices were obtained as a function of the radius along the semimajor axis of the galaxy. The Mg 2 index presents a gradient of d Mg 2 / d log r = -0.079 which behaves similarly to the Fe I lines, indicating no enhancement of Mg 2 in relation to Fe I. The stellar population ages and metallicities were derived by a population synthesis method using available evolutive spectrophotometric models. The synthesis indicates a strong age gradient along the semimajor axis of NGC 720. In the central region a 13 Gyr and solar metallicity stellar population dominates the flux at 5870 A; the contribution of this component vanishes at a radius of 0.73 kpc, where the total flux is accounted for by a younger, 5 Gyr and solar metallicity stellar population. For distances larger than 1 kpc a 2.5 Gyr component becomes very important. Moreover, NGC 720 is probably overabundant in CN in the center with respect to the solar abundance. The estimated total mass (3.29x 10 11 M ○. ) and the Mg 2 gradient values suggest that this galaxy might have undergone a merger event. The correspondence between the J-band brightness profile decomposition and the result of the spectral synthesis shows that this galaxy is formed by an old (13-5 Gyr), bulge-like, small-scale and massive spheroid and a younger (5-2.5 Gyr), large-scale disk component. We discuss our results in comparison with available numerical simulations and propose that the merger event must have occurred about 4 Gyr ago.

We investigate the 2D excitation structure of the ISM in a sample of LIRGs and Seyferts using near-IR IFS. This study extends to the near-IR the well-known optical and mid-IR emission line diagnostics used to classify activity in galaxies. Based on the spatially resolved spectroscopy of prototypes, we identify in the [FeII]1.64/Br$\gamma$ - H_2 1-0S(1)/Br$\gamma$ plane regions dominated by the different heating sources, i.e. AGNs, young MS massive stars, and evolved stars i.e. supernovae. The ISM in LIRGs occupy a wide region in the near-IR diagnostic plane from -0.6 to +1.5 and from -1.2 to +0.8 (in log units) for the [FeII]/Br$\gamma$ and H_2/Br$\gamma$ line ratios, respectively. The corresponding median(mode) ratios are +0.18(0.16) and +0.02(-0.04). Seyferts show on average larger values by factors ~2.5 and ~1.4 for the [FeII]/Br$\gamma$ and H_2/Br$\gamma$ ratios, respectively. New areas and relations in the near-IR diagnostic plane are defined for the compact, high surface brightness regions dominated by AGN, young ionizing stars, and SNe explosions, respectively. In addition, the diffuse regions affected by the AGN radiation field cover an area similar to that of Seyferts, but with high values in [FeII]/Br$\gamma$ that are not as extreme. The extended, non-AGN diffuse regions cover a wide area in the diagnostic diagram that overlaps that of individual excitation mechanisms (i.e. AGN, young stars, and SNe), but with its mode value to that of the young SF clumps. This indicates that the excitation conditions of the diffuse ISM are likely due to a mixture of the different ionization sources. The integrated line ratios in LIRGs show higher excitation conditions i.e. towards AGNs, than those measured by the spatially resolved spectroscopy. If this behaviour is representative, it would have clear consequences when classifying high-z, SF galaxies based on their near-IR integrated spectra., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We investigate interaction effects on the dynamics and morphology of the galaxy pairs AM\,2058-381 and AM\,1228-260. This work is based on $r'$ images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. The luminosity ratio between the main (AM\,2058A) and secondary (AM\,2058B) components of the first pair is a factor of $\sim$ 5, while for the other pair, the main (AM\,1228A) component is 20 times more luminous than the secondary (AM\,1228B). The four galaxies have pseudo-bulges, with a S��rsic index $n, 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report spectroscopic observations in the wavelength region 0.8-2.4 microns aimed at detecting near-infrared coronal lines in a sample of 5 narrow-line and 1 broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. Our measurements show that [SiVI] 1.963mu, [SIX] 1.252mu and [SVIII] 0.991mu are present in most of the objects and are useful tracers of nuclear activity. Line ratios between coronal and low ionization forbidden lines are larger in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. A positive correlation between FHWM and ionization potential of the forbidden lines is observed. Some coronal lines have widths similar to that of lines emitted in the broad line region (BLR), indicating that part of their flux originates in gas close to the outer portions of the BLR. Most coronal lines are blueshifted relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy and this shift increases with the increase in line width. Assymetries towards the blue are observed in the profiles of high-ionization Fe lines, suggesting that the emitting gas is related to winds or outflows, most probably originating in material that is being evaporated from the torus. This scenario is supported by models that combine the effects of shock ionization and photoionization by a central continuum source in the gas clouds. The agreement between the coronal line emission predicted by the models and the observations is satisfactory; the models reproduced the whole range of coronal line intensities observed. We also report the detection of [FeXIII] 1.074,1.079mu in three of our objects and the first detection of [PII] 1.188mu and [NiII] 1.191mu in a Seyfert 1 galaxy, ARK 564. Using the ratio [PII]/[FeII] we deduced that most Fe present in the outer NLR of ARK 564 is locked up in grains, and the influence of shocks is negligible., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Optical spectra were used to study the stellar population and gas emission, when present, in the central parts of the elliptical galaxies NGC 6958, NGC 6851 and ESO 185-G54, and the spiral galaxies NGC 5757, NGC 7412 and IC 4214. Stellar population properties were derived by comparing the equivalent widths of the absorption lines with those of galaxy templates built from star clusters, as well as by applying a method of stellar population synthesis based on the same star clusters. For the galaxies with emission lines, the underlying stellar population was subtracted to obtain the pure emission spectrum, and the resulting emission line intensities were measured to determine the mechanism responsible for the gas excitation. From this analysis we concluded that the galaxies have solar metallicity except the elliptical ESO 185-G54 that reached metallicity slightly above solar. The three ellipticals and the Sa galaxy IC 4214 have their nuclei dominated by old stellar populations, although IC 4214 appears to have some contribution from the young generation stars. Recent star formation ( t< 500 Myr) is prominent in the nucleus of the SBb galaxy NGC 5757, and is also present to a lesser degree in the Sbc NGC 7412. In these two galaxies, the recent star formation is responsible for the observed H ii type emission lines, while IC 4214 has LINER emission. Among the ellipticals, only in NGC 6958 did we detect ionized gas, whose spectra is typical of LINERs.

In this paper we describe the spectroscopic and infrared properties of a sample of 25 merging galaxy pairs, selected from the catalog of Arp & Madore, and we compare them with those observed in a similar sample of interacting galaxies (Donzelli & Pastoriza). It is noted that mergers as well as interacting systems comprise a wide range of spectral types, going from those corresponding to well-evolved stellar populations (older than 200 Myr) to those that show clear signatures of H II regions with stellar populations younger than 8 Myr. However, merger galaxies show on average more excited spectra than interacting pairs, which could be attributed to lower gas metallicity. From the emission lines we also found that merging systems show on average higher (about a factor of 2) star formation rates than interacting galaxies. Classical diagnostic diagrams show that only three of 50 of the galaxies (6%) present some form of nuclear activity: two Seyfert galaxies and one LINER. However, through a detailed analysis of the pure emission-line spectra, we conclude that this fraction may raise up to 23% of the mergers if we consider that some galaxies host a low-luminosity active nucleus surrounded by strong star-forming regions. This latter assumption is also supported by the infrared colors of the galaxies. Regarding to the total infrared luminosities, the merging galaxies show on average an IR luminosity, log(Lir) = 10.7, lower than that of interacting systems, log(Lir) = 10.9. We find that only three mergers of the sample (12%) can be classified as luminous infrared galaxies, while this fraction increases to 24% in the interacting sample.

We present gaseous and stellar kinematics for 14 gas-rich early-type galaxies. Half of the sample exhibit irregular gaseous velocity profiles; gas/star counter-rotation is visible in five galaxies. We also find five counter-rotating stellar cores, while five more galaxies display inner components kinematically decoupled from the main stellar body. We interpret our results as an indication that the ionized gas is of external origin, is generally not in equilibrium, and may have been acquired recently. The merging or accretion events that brought the gas into the galaxy have also affected the stellar kinematics.

HST images of NGC 3379 show that the V and I luminosity profiles in the inner 13 arcsec of this E1 galaxy are represented by two different components: a stellar bulge following a Sersic Law with exponent n = 2.36, and a central core (r < 0.7 arcsec) with a characteristic "cuspy" profile. Subtraction of the underlying stellar component represented by the fitted Sersic profile revealed the presence of a small (r ~ 105 pc) dust disk of about 150 solar masses, oriented at PA = 125 degrees and inclined ~ 77 degrees with respect to the line of sight. The same absorption structure is detected in the color-index (V-I) image. The stellar rotation in the inner 20 arcsec is well represented by a parametric planar disk model, inclined ~ 26 degrees relative to the plane of the sky, and apparent major axis along PA ~ 67 degrees. The gas velocity curves in the inner 5 arcsec show a steep gradient, indicating that the gas rotates much faster than the stars, although in the same direction. The velocity field of the gaseous system, however, is not consistent with the simple model of Keplerian rotation sustained by the large (7 x 10E9 solar masses within a radius of ~ 90 pc) central mass implied by the maximum velocity observed, but the available data precludes a more detailed analysis.

This paper studies the continuum and emission-line properties of a sample composed of 16 normal Seyfert 1 and seven narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies using optical and near-IR CCD spectroscopy. The continuum emission of the galaxies can be described in terms of a combination of stellar population, a nonstellar continuum of power-law form, and Fe II emission. A significative difference in the optical spectral index between NLS1's and normal Seyfert 1's is observed; the latter is steeper. Most NLS1's show Fe II/Hβ ratios larger than those observed in the other Seyfert 1's. In the IRAS band, both groups of galaxies have very similar properties. We have searched for the presence of optically thin gas in the broad-line region (BLR) of the galaxies by comparing the broad O I λ8446 and Hα emission-line profiles. Our analysis show that in the NLS1's, both profiles are similar in shape and width. This result contradicts the hypothesis of thin gas emission in the high-velocity part of the BLR to explain the "narrowness" of broad optical permitted lines in these objects. Evidence of narrow O I λ8446 emission is found in six galaxies of our sample, implying that this line is not restricted to a pure BLR phenomenon. In the narrow-line region, we find similar luminosities in the permitted and high-ionization lines of NLS1's and normal Seyfert 1's. However, low-ionization lines such as [O I] λ6300, [O II] λ3727, and [S II] λλ6717, 6731 are intrinsically less luminous in NLS1's. Physical properties derived from density- and temperature-sensitive line ratios suggest that the [O II] and [S II] emitting zones are overlapping in normal Seyfert 1's and separated in NLS1's.

Long-slit medium-resolution spectra are used to study the continuum and ionization properties of the gas in the Seyfert 1 galaxies F10.01 and A08.12. We find that the nuclear underlying continuum can be described by a power law. In addition to this component, Balmer continuum (Bac) and high-order Balmer lines can fit the apparent excess of emission extending from 3900 A to the blue end of the spectra. The observed Bac flux in A08.12 is about 9 times as strong as Hβ, stronger than that predicted by most photoionization models. From the analysis of the Fe II emission, we found Fe II λ4570/Hβ ~ 1 in F10.01, leading us to consider this object as a strong Fe II emitter. Broad and symmetrical Balmer lines are observed in A08.12, while strongly asymmetrical ones are observed in F10.01, with the full width at zero intensity (FWZI) around 15,000 km s-1. We interpret the above results as evidence for broad-line region (BLR) gas exposed to the anisotropic UV radiation emitted by a thin disk combined with an isotropic X-ray source. Such a model could explain observational differences like strong Fe II and weak Bac and He I λ5875 emission in F10.01, and strong Bac and He I λ5875 and weak Fe II in A08.12, as due to an angular dependence of emission-line intensities. The narrow-line region (NLR) of both objects shows strong high-ionization lines and T[OIII] temperatures that cannot be reproduced simultaneously using single-component ionization-bounded photoionization models. We explore here the possibility of a NLR composed of a combination of matter-bounded (MB) and ionization-bounded (IB) clouds. In this scheme, the MB component is responsible for most of the high-excitation lines, including the [O III] emission, while the IB clouds, photoionized by the radiation leaking the MB component, are located 140 times more distant from the central source than the MB clouds and show a much lower excitation. Using this scheme, we can successfully solve the "temperature problem" and obtain much stronger excitation lines, in accordance with our observations.

We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions on the electron density of HII regions located in seven systems of interacting galaxies. The data consist of long-slit spectra in the range 4400-7300 Å, obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at Gemini South (GMOS-S). The electron density was determined using the ratio of emission lines [S II] λ6716/λ6731. Our results indicate that the electron density estimates obtained of HII regions from our sample of interacting galaxies are systematically higher than those derived for isolated galaxies. The mean electron density values of interacting galaxies are in the range of Ne = 24-532 cm-3, while those obtained for isolated galaxies are in the range of Ne =40-137 cm-3.Comparing the observed emission lines with predictions of photoionization models, we verified that almost all the HII regions of the galaxies AM 1054A, AM 2058B and AM 2306B have emission lines excited by shock gas. For the remaining galaxies, only few H II regions have emission lines excited by shocks, such as in AM 2322B (one point) and AM 2322A (four points). No correlation is obtained between the presence of shocks and electron densities. Indeed, the highest electron density values found in our sample do not belong to the objects with gas shock excitation. New Gemini mid-infrared spectroscopic observations together with Spitzer Space telescope archival data, are used to study the properties of the dusty torus and circumnuclear star formation in the active galaxies NGC 7213 and NGC 1386. Our main conclusions can be summarised as follows. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission is absent in the T-ReCS nuclear spectra but is ubiquitous in the data from Spitzer at distances above 100 pc. Star formation rates surface densities are estimated from the 12.8 $\mu m$ [Ne{\sc ii}] line strengths leading to values close to 0.1M$_\odot\,\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$. Analogous estimates based on photometric fluxes of IRAC's 8 $\mu m$ images are higher by a factor of almost 15, which could be linked to excitation of PAH molecules by older stellar populations. T-ReCS high spatial resolution data reveal silicate absorption at $\lambda$ 9.7 $\mu m$ in the central tens of parsecs of the Seyfert 2 NGC 1386, and silicate emission in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7213. In the case of NGC 1386 this feature is confined to the inner 20 pc, implying that the silicate might be linked to the putative dusty torus. Finally, by fitting CLUMPY models to the T-ReCS nuclear spectra we estimate the torus physical properties for both galaxies, finding line of sight inclinations consistent with the AGN unified model., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

This paper presents an analysis of moderately large samples of type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies through optical observations and far-infrared IRAS data, also taking into account theoretical color indices derived from dust emission models. The galaxies in the samples cover a rather large interval in far-infrared luminosity, i.e., 7.6 ? log (LIR/L?) ? 12.6. We show that both types of Seyferts have approximately the same distribution of number of objects with a given LIR. Galaxies with similar far-infrared color indices ?(100, 60) are grouped together, and the corresponding average color indices are interpreted in terms of a simple model in which the observed colors result from the combination of dust directly heated by the active galactic nucleus with a component from the host galaxy represented by the emission of cool dust. On the basis of the average IRAS colors of the derived groups, we show that type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies are undistinguishable from each other. From the luminosity ratios LIR/LH? and LIR/L[O III], we show that basically the same model can be applied to both types of Seyfert, only allowing for the variation of model conditions: type 2 Seyferts would be like type 1 Seyferts but with the Seyfert nucleus and broad line region more effectively hidden by dust.

We present results of a CCD optical imaging survey of the ionized gas in 73 luminous elliptical and lenticular galaxies, selected from the RC3 catalog to represent a broad variety of X-ray, radio, infrared and kinematical properties. For each galaxy we have used broad-band R images and narrow-band images centered at the and emission lines to derive the luminosity and distribution of the ionized gas. We found that a large fraction of E (72%) and S0 (85%) galaxies in our sample contain ionized gas. The gas morphology appears to be rather smooth for most galaxies; however of the sample galaxies show a very extended filamentary structure. According to the morphology and size of the gas distribution, the galaxies have been classified into three broad groups, named small disk (SD), regular extended (RE) and filamentary structure (F). The mean diameter of the emitting region ranges between 1 and 10 kpc; the derived mass of the ionized gas ranges between 103 and 105 solar masses. A significant correlation between and X-ray luminosities is found for those galaxies (27% of the sample) for which we have detected ionized gas and are also listed as X-ray sources. However, there are relatively strong X-ray emitting galaxies for which we have not detected emission and objects which show emission-lines but are not listed either in the EINSTEIN or in the ROSAT databases. The distribution of datapoint and upper limits in this diagram suggests that galaxies with warm gas are also X-ray emitters, while there are X-ray emitters without measurable emission. Similar characteristics are present in the correlation between the infrared luminosity in the 12 band and ; correlations with other infrared wavelengths are weaker. A strong correlation was also found between the luminosity and the luminosity in the B band inside the region occupied by the line-emitting gas. We use these correlations to discuss the possible mechanisms responsible for the gas ionization and excitation, analyzing in particular the role of the post-AGB stars and the thermal conduction from the X-ray halo in providing the necessary source of ionization.

We analyse the UV properties of early-type galaxies from their UV spectra in the IUE library, including both normal and active nuclei. We co-added the spectra, and hence the objects into groups of similar spectral properties in the UV, also taking into account their properties in the visible/near-infrared ranges. Although, owing to the presence of a residual xed pattern noise, IUE data cannot be improved by co-addition as expected for spectra containing only random noise, this procedure still provided spectra of higher signal/noise ratio than in previous studies, often based on individual spectra and therefrom derived colour indices. Thanks to the co-adding procedure, information on spectral features can now be assessed. The red stellar population groups exhibit a far-UV flux at dierent levels. The higher ones denote the presence of the UV turnup, which possibly exhibits absorption features, at least as detected through the IUE aperture. As to the blue stellar population groups and/or AGNs, we have carried out simple syntheses with UV star cluster templates and galaxy spectra in order to infer the properties such as burst ages and contamination by an active nucleus. It has been possible to derive information on the extinction law aecting some internally reddened galaxies; there are cases where the presence of the 2200 A absorption feature suggests a reddening law similar to the Galactic one, and others without the 2200 Af eature, suggesting that it is rather an SMC type law which applies, then.

We present an observational study of the interaction effect on the dynamics and morphology of the minor merger AM1219-430. This work is based on r' and g' images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. We detected a tidal tail in the main galaxy (AM1219A) and a bridge of material connecting the galaxies. In luminosity, AM1219A is about 3.8 times brighter than the secondary (AM1219B). The surface brightness profile of AM1219A was decomposed into bulge and disc components. The profile shows a light excess of ~ 53 % due to the contribution of star-forming regions, which is typical of starburst galaxies. On the other hand, the surface brightness profile of AM1219B shows a lens structure in addition to the bulge and disc. The scale lengths and central magnitudes of the disc structure of both galaxies agree with the average values derived for galaxies with no sign of ongoing interaction or disturbed morphology. We present mid infrared (MIR) spectra of the Seyfert 2 (Sy 2) galaxy NGC 1808, obtained with the Gemini's Thermal-Region Camera Spectrograph (T-ReCS) at a spatial resolution of 26 pc. The high spatial resolution allowed us to detect bright polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emissions at 8.6micron and 11.3micron in the galaxy centre (26 pc) up to a radius of 70 pc from the nucleus. The spectra also present [Ne ii]12.8micron ionic lines, and H2 S(2)12.27micron molecular gas line. We found that the PAHs profiles are similar to Peeters's A class, with the line peak shifted towards the blue. The differences in the PAH line profiles also suggests that the molecules in the region located 26 pc NE of the nucleus are more in the neutral than in the ionised state, while at 26 pc SW of the nucleus, the molecules are mainly in ionised state. After removal of the underlying galaxy contribution, the nuclear spectrum can be represented by a Nenkova's clumpy torus model, indicating that the nucleus of NGC 1808 hosts a dusty toroidal structure with an angular cloud distribution of sigma = 70degree, observer's view angle i = 90degree, and an outer radius of R0 = 0.55 pc. The derived column density along the line of sight is NH = 1.5 x 10^24 cm-2, which is sufficient to block the hard radiation from the active nucleus, and would explain the presence of PAH molecules near to the NGC 1808's active nucleus., Accepted by MNRAS 2012 December 3

We use near-infrared spectroscopic data from the inner few hundred parsecs of a sample of 47 active galaxies to investigate possible correlations between the stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_star), obtained from the fit of the K-band CO stellar absorption bands, and the gas velocity dispersion (sigma) obtained from the fit of the emission-line profiles of [SIII]0.953um, [Fe II]1.257um, [FeII]1.644um and H_2 2.122um. While no correlations with sigma_star were found for H_2 and [SIII], a good correlation was found for the two [Fe II] emission lines, expressed by the linear fit sigma_star = 95.4\pm16.1 + (0.25\pm0.08)sigma_[Fe II]. Excluding barred objects from the sample a better correlation is found between sigma_star and sigma_[FeII], with a correlation coefficient of R=0.80 and fitted by the following relation: sigma_\star = 57.9\pm23.5 + (0.42\pm0.10)sigma_[FeII]. This correlation can be used to estimate $\sigma_\star$ in cases it cannot be directly measured and the [FeII] emission lines are present in the spectra, allowing to obtain the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) from the M-\sigma_\star relation. The scatter from a one-to-one relationship between sigma_star and its value derived from sigma_[FeII] using the equation above for our sample is 0.07dex, which is smaller than that obtained in previous studies which use \sigma_[OIII] in the optical as a proxy for sigma_star. The use of sigma_[Fe\,II] in the near-IR instead of sigma_[OIII] in the optical is a valuable option for cases in which optical spectra are not available or are obscured, as is the case of many AGN., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions in the kinematics, stellar populations, and oxygen abundances of the components of the galaxy pair AM\,2322-821. A fairly symmetric rotation curve for the companion (AM\,2322B) galaxy with a deprojected velocity amplitude of 110 km s$^{-1}$ was obtained, and a dynamical mass of $ 1.1 - 1.3 \times 10^{10} M_{\sun}$ within a radius of 4 kpc was estimated using this deprojected velocity. Asymmetries in the radial velocity field were detected for the companion, very likely due the interaction between the galaxies. The interaction between the main and companion galaxies was modelled using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, with the result indicating that the current stage of the system would be about 90 Myr after perigalacticum. The spatial variation in the distribution of the stellar-population components in both galaxies was analysed using the stellar population synthesis code {\sc STARLIGHT}. The companion galaxy is dominated by a very young (t $ \leq 1\times10^{8}$ yr) population, with the fraction of this population to the total flux at $\lambda\, 5\,870\, \AA$, increasing outwards in the galaxy disc. On the other hand, the stellar population of AM\,2322A is heterogeneous along the slit positions observed. Spatial profiles of oxygen abundance in the gaseous phase were obtained using the diagnostic diagram R23 vs. [OIII]/[OII], where we compared the observed values with the ones obtained from photoionization models. Such gradients of oxygen abundance are significantly flatter for this pair of galaxies than in typical isolated spiral galaxies. This metallicity distribution is interpreted as the gradients having been destroyed by interaction-induced gas flows from the outer parts to the centre of the galaxy

We study the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) bands, ionic emission lines, and Mid-infrared continuum properties, in a sample of 171 emission line galaxies taken from literature plus 15 new active galactic nuclei (AGN) Spitzer spectra. The continuum shape steeply rises for longer wavelengths and can be fitted with a warm blackbody distribution of T=150-300K. The brightest PAH spectral bands (6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, and 12.7$\mu$m) and the forbidden emission lines of [Si II] 34.8$\mu$m, [Ar II] 6.9, [S III] 18.7 and 33.4 were detected in all the Starbursts and in ~80% of the Seyfert~2. Taking under consideration only the PAH bands at 7.7$\mu$m, 11.3$\mu$m, and 12.7$\mu$m we find they are present in ~80% of the Seyfert 1, while only half of this type of activity show the 6.2$\mu$m and 8.6 PAH bands. The observed intensities ratios for neutral and ionized PAHs (6.2/7.7 x 11.3/7.7) were compared to theoretical intensity ratios, showing that AGNs have higher ionization fraction and larger PAH (> 180 carbon atoms) than SB galaxies. The ratio between the ionized (7.7) and the neutral PAH bands (8.6 and 11.3) are distributed over different ranges for AGNs and SB galaxies, suggesting that these ratios could depend on the ionization fraction, as well as on the hardness of the radiation field. The ratio between the 7.7 and 11.3 bands is nearly constant with the increase of [Ne III]15.5/[Ne II], indicating that the fraction of ionized to neutral PAH bands does not depend on the hardness of the radiation field. The equivalent width of both PAH features show the same dependence with [Ne III]/[Ne II], suggesting that the PAH, emitting either ionized (7.7) or neutral (11.3) bands, may be destroyed with the increase of the hardness of the radiation field., Comment: Accepted by ApJ
