Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are very-high-amplitude bursts of X-ray radiation recurring every few hours and originating near the central supermassive black holes of galactic nuclei1,2. It is currently unknown what triggers these events, how long they last and how they are connected to the physical properties of the inner accretion flows. Previously, only two such sources were known, found either serendipitously or in archival data1,2, with emission lines in their optical spectra classifying their nuclei as hosting an actively accreting supermassive black hole3,4. Here we report observations of QPEs in two further galaxies, obtained with a blind and systematic search of half of the X-ray sky. The optical spectra of these galaxies show no signature of black hole activity, indicating that a pre-existing accretion flow that is typical of active galactic nuclei is not required to trigger these events. Indeed, the periods, amplitudes and profiles of the QPEs reported here are inconsistent with current models that invoke radiation-pressure-driven instabilities in the accretion disk5–9. Instead, QPEs might be driven by an orbiting compact object. Furthermore, their observed properties require the mass of the secondary object to be much smaller than that of the main body10, and future X-ray observations may constrain possible changes in their period owing to orbital evolution. This model could make QPEs a viable candidate for the electromagnetic counterparts of so-called extreme-mass-ratio inspirals11–13, with considerable implications for multi-messenger astrophysics and cosmology14,15., X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions are detected from two previously inactive galaxies, with observations suggesting that the very-high-amplitude X-ray bursts may arise from an orbiting compact object.

4MOST is a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under construction for ESO's 4m-VISTA telescope at Paranal, Chile. Its key specifications are: a large field of view of 4.4 square degrees, a high multiplex fibre positioner based on the tilting spine principle that positions 2436 science fibres in the focal surface of which 1624 fibres go to two low-resolution optical spectrographs (R = lambda/Delta lambda similar to 6500) and 812 fibres transfer light to the high-resolution optical spectrograph (R similar to 20,000). Currently, almost all subsystems are completed and full testing in Europe will be finished in spring 2023, after which 4MOST will be shipped to Chile. An overview is given of instrument construction and capabilities, the planned science of the consortium and the recently selected community programmes, and the unique operational scheme of 4MOST.

We report the discovery and spectroscopic identification of the bright doubly lensed quasar eRASS1 J050129.5−073309 at redshift z = 2.47, selected from the first all-sky survey of the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) eROSITA telescope and the Gaia EDR3 catalog. We systematically searched for extragalactic sources with eROSITA X-ray positions that have multiple Gaia counterparts, and we have started spectroscopic follow-up of the most promising candidates using long-slit spectroscopy with NTT/EFOSC2 to confirm the lens nature. The two images are separated by 2.7″, and their average Gaia g-band magnitudes are 16.95 and 17.33. Legacy Survey DR10 imaging and image modeling reveal both the lensing galaxy and tentatively the lensed image of the quasar host galaxy. Archival optical light curves show evidence of a variability time delay, with the fainter component lagging the brighter by about 100 days. The brightness of the fainter image has also decreased by about one magnitude since 2019. This dimming was still obvious at the time of the spectroscopic observations and is probably caused by microlensing. The optical spectroscopic follow-up obtained from NTT/EFOSC2 and the evidence provided by the imaging and timing analysis allow us to confirm the lensed nature of eRASS1 J050129.5−073309.

[Context] The eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), observed with eROSITA ahead of its planned 4-yr all-sky survey, is the largest contiguous-field X-ray survey at present. It yielded a large sample of X-ray sources with very rich multiband photometric and spectroscopic coverage., [Aims] We present here the eFEDS active galactic nuclei (AGN) catalog and the eROSITA X-ray spectral properties of the eFEDS sources., [Methods] Using a Bayesian method, we performed a systematic X-ray spectral analysis for all the eFEDS sources. We adopted multiple spectral models, including single-component power-law or hot-plasma models and double-component models of a power law plus soft excess. We investigated the capacity of eROSITA X-ray spectra for constraining AGN spectral shapes through a detailed analysis of the posterior parameter probability distribution functions. Hierarchical Bayesian modeling was used to recover the spectral parameter distribution of the sample. The source fluxes and luminosities were measured from the posterior of the spectral fitting., [Results] The eFEDS AGN catalog (22 079 sources) comprises ~80% of the eFEDS point sources. Despite a large number of faint sources, our spectral fitting provides reasonable measurements of spectral shapes and intrinsic luminosities for a majority of the sources. Because of sample selection bias, this AGN catalog is dominated by X-ray unobscured sources, with an obscured (logNH > 21.5) fraction of 8%; the power-law emission of the hot corona is also relatively soft, with a typical slope of 2.0. For type-I AGN, the X-ray emission is well correlated with the UV emission with the usual anticorrelation between the X-ray to UV spectral slope αOX and the UV luminosity. [Abbreviated] Rest-frame UV emission lines probe physical parameters of the emitting star-forming galaxies and their environments. The strongest main UV line, Ly$\alpha$, has been instrumental in advancing the general knowledge of galaxy formation in the early universe. However, observing Ly$\alpha$ emission becomes increasingly challenging at $z \gtrsim 6$ when the neutral hydrogen fraction of the CGM and IGM increases. Secondary weaker UV emission lines provide important alternative methods for studying galaxy properties at high redshift. We present a large sample of rest-frame UV emission line sources at intermediate redshift for calibrating and exploring the connection between secondary UV lines and the emitting galaxies' physical properties and their Ly$\alpha$ emission. The sample of 2052 emission line sources with $1.5 < z < 6.4$ was selected through untargeted source detection in three-dimensional MUSE data cubes. We searched optimally extracted 1D spectra of the full sample for UV emission features via emission line template matching, resulting in a sample of more than 100 rest-frame UV emission line detections. We show that the detection efficiency of (non-Ly$\alpha$) UV emission lines increases with survey depth, and that the UV emission line strength often correlate with the strength of Ciii]. We measured the velocity offsets of resonant emission lines with respect to systemic tracers as well as the electron density and the gas-phase abundance. Lastly, using "PhotoIonization Model Probability Density Functions" we find that the UV line emitters generally have ionization parameter log10(U) $\approx$ -2.5 and metal mass fractions that scatter around Z $\approx$ 10$^{-2}$, that is Z $\approx$ 0.66Z$\odot$. We have conducted an extensive X-ray spectral variability study of a sample of 20 Compton-thin type II galaxies using broad band spectra from XMM-Newton, Chandra, and Suzaku. The aim is to study the variability of the neutral intrinsic X-ray obscuration along the line of sight and investigate the properties and location of the dominant component of the X-ray-obscuring gas. The observations are sensitive to absorption columns of $N_{\rm H} \sim 10^{20.5-24} {\rm cm^{-2}}$ of fully- and partially-covering neutral and/or lowly-ionized gas on timescales spanning days to well over a decade. We detected variability in the column density of the full-covering absorber in 7/20 sources, on timescales of months-years, indicating a component of compact-scale X-ray-obscuring gas lying along the line of sight of each of these objects. Our results imply that torus models incorporating clouds or overdense regions should account for line of sight column densities as low as $\sim$ a few $\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. However, 13/20 sources yielded no detection of significant variability in the full-covering obscurer, with upper limits to ${\Delta}N_{\rm H}$ spanning $10^{21-23}$ cm$^{-2}$. The dominant absorbing media in these systems could be distant, such as kpc-scale dusty structures associated with the host galaxy, or a homogeneous medium along the line of sight. Thus, we find that overall, strong variability in full-covering obscurers is not highly prevalent in Compton-thin type IIs, at least for our sample, in contrast to previous results in the literature. Finally, 11/20 sources required a partial-covering, obscuring component in all or some of their observations, consistent with clumpy near-Compton-thick compact-scale gas., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

A prediction of the classic active galactic nuclei (AGN) unification model is the presence of ionisation cones with different orientations depending on the AGN type. Confirmations of this model exist for present times, but it is less clear in the early Universe. Here, we use the morphology of giant Ly$\alpha$ nebulae around AGNs at redshift z$\sim$3 to probe AGN emission and therefore the validity of the AGN unification model at this redshift. We compare the spatial morphology of 19 nebulae previously found around type I AGNs with a new sample of 4 Ly$\alpha$ nebulae detected around type II AGNs. Using two independent techniques, we find that nebulae around type II AGNs are more asymmetric than around type I, at least at radial distances $r>30$~physical kpc (pkpc) from the ionizing source. We conclude that the type I and type II AGNs in our sample show evidence of different surrounding ionising geometries. This suggests that the classical AGN unification model is also valid for high-redshift sources. Finally, we discuss how the lack of asymmetry in the inner parts (r$\lesssim$30 pkpc) and the associated high values of the HeII to Ly$\alpha$ ratios in these regions could indicate additional sources of (hard) ionizing radiation originating within or in proximity of the AGN host galaxies. This work demonstrates that the morphologies of giant Ly$\alpha$ nebulae can be used to understand and study the geometry of high redshift AGNs on circum-nuclear scales and it lays the foundation for future studies using much larger statistical samples., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The 140 square degree Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) field, observed with the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) aboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission, provides a first look at the variable eROSITA sky. We analyze the intrinsic X-ray variability of the eFEDS sources, provide X-ray light curves and tables with variability test results in the 0.2-2.3 keV (soft) and 2.3-5.0 keV (hard) bands. respectively. We perform variability tests using the normalized excess variance and maximum amplitude variability methods as performed for the 2RXS catalogue and add results from the Bayesian excess variance and the Bayesian block methods. In total 65 sources have been identified as being significantly variable in the soft band. In the hard band only one source is found to vary significantly. For the most variable sources fits to stellar flare events reveal extreme flare properties. A few highly variable AGN have also been detected. About half of the variable eFEDS sources have been detected at X-rays with eROSITA for the first time. We describe the survey design, calibration, commissioning, and emission-line detection algorithms for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). Large multi-object spectroscopic surveys require automated algorithms to optimise their observing strategy. One of the most ambitious upcoming spectroscopic surveys is the 4MOST survey. The 4MOST survey facility is a fibre-fed spectroscopic instrument on the VISTA telescope with a large enough field of view to survey a large fraction of the southern sky within a few years. Several Galactic and extragalactic surveys will be carried out simultaneously, so the combined target density will strongly vary. In this paper, we describe a new tiling algorithm that can naturally deal with the large target density variations on the sky and which automatically handles the different exposure times of targets. The tiling pattern is modelled as a marked point process, which is characterised by a probability density that integrates the requirements imposed by the 4MOST survey. The optimal tilling pattern with respect to the defined model is estimated by the tiles configuration that maximises the proposed probability density. In order to achieve this maximisation a simulated annealing algorithm is implemented. The algorithm automatically finds an optimal tiling pattern and assigns a tentative sky brightness condition and exposure time for each tile, while minimising the total execution time that is needed to observe the list of targets in the combined input catalogue of all surveys. Hence, the algorithm maximises the long-term observing efficiency and provides an optimal tiling solution for the survey. Galaxy-wide outflows driven by star formation and/or an active galactic nucleus (AGN) are thought to play a crucial rule in the evolution of galaxies and the metal enrichment of the inter-galactic medium. Direct measurements of these processes are still scarce and new observations are needed to reveal the nature of outflows in the majority of the galaxy population. Aims. We combine extensive, spatially-resolved, multi-wavelength observations, taken as part of the Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS), for the edge-on disc galaxy HE 1353-1917 in order to characterise the impact of the AGN on its host galaxy via outflows and radiation. Methods. Multi-color broad-band photometry was combined with spatially-resolved optical, near-infrared (NIR) and sub-mm and radio observations taken with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopy Explorer (MUSE), the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS), the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to map the physical properties and kinematics of the multi-phase interstellar medium. Results. We detect a biconical extended narrow-line region ionised by the luminous AGN orientated nearly parallel to the galaxy disc, extending out to at least 25 kpc. The extra-planar gas originates from galactic fountains initiated by star formation processes in the disc, rather than an AGN outflow, as shown by the kinematics and the metallicity of the gas. Nevertheless, a fast, multi-phase, AGN-driven outflow with speeds up to 1000 km s(-1) is detected close to the nucleus at 1 kpc distance. A radio jet, in connection with the AGN radiation field, is likely responsible for driving the outflow as confirmed by the energetics and the spatial alignment of the jet and multi-phase outflow. Evidence for negative AGN feedback suppressing the star formation rate (SFR) is mild and restricted to the central kpc. But while any SFR suppression must have happened recently, the outflow has the potential to greatly impact the future evolution of the galaxy disc due to its geometrical orientation. Conclusions.. Our observations reveal that low-power radio jets can play a major role in driving fast, multi-phase, galaxy-scale outflows even in radio-quiet AGN. Since the outflow energetics for HE 1353-1917 are consistent with literature, scaling relation of AGN-driven outflows the contribution of radio jets as the driving mechanisms still needs to be systematically explored.© B. We present an analysis of the spatial clustering of 695 Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (LAE) in the MUSE-Wide survey. All objects have spectroscopically confirmed redshifts in the range $3.3, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 22 pages, 20 figures, 4 tables

We study a sample of six X-ray-selected broad absorption line (BAL) quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) from the XMM-Newton Wide Angle Survey. All six objects are classified as BALQSOs using the classic balnicity index, and together they form the largest sample of X-ray-selected BALQSOs. We find evidence for absorption in the X-ray spectra of all six objects. An ionized absorption model applied to an X-ray spectral shape that would be typical for non-BAL QSOs (a power law with energy index ¿ = 0.98) provides acceptable fits to the X-ray spectra of all six objects. The optical to X-ray spectral indices, ¿OX, of the X-ray-selected BALQSOs, have a mean value of = 1.69 ± 0.05, which is similar to that found for X-ray-selected and optically selected non-BAL QSOs of a similar ultraviolet luminosity. In contrast, optically selected BALQSOs typically have much larger ¿OX and so are characterized as being X-ray weak. The results imply that X-ray selection yields intrinsically X-ray bright BALQSOs, but their X-ray spectra are absorbed by a similar degree to that seen in optically selected BALQSO samples; X-ray absorption appears to be ubiquitous in BALQSOs, but X-ray weakness is not. The ultra-soft narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0707-495 is a well-known and highly variable active galactic nucleus (AGN), with a complex, steep X-ray spectrum, and has been studied extensively with XMM-Newton. 1H 0707-495 was observed with the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) aboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission on October 11, 2019, for about 60,000 seconds as one of the first calibration and pointed verification phase (CalPV) observations. The eROSITA light curves show significant variability in the form of a flux decrease by a factor of 58 with a 1 sigma error confidence interval between 31 and 235. This variability is primarily in the soft band, and is much less extreme in the hard band. No strong ultraviolet variability has been detected in simultaneous XMM-Newton Optical Monitor observations. The UV emission is about 10^44 erg s^-1, close to the Eddington limit. 1H 0707-495 entered the lowest hard flux state seen in 20 years of XMM-Newton observations. In the eROSITA All-Sky Survey (eRASS) observations taken in April 2020, the X-ray light curve is still more variable in the ultra-soft band, but with increased soft and hard band count rates more similar to previously observed flux states. A model including relativistic reflection and a variable partial covering absorber is able to fit the spectra and provides a possible explanation for the extreme light-curve behaviour. The absorber is probably ionised and therefore more transparent to soft X-rays. In the context of the upcoming SRG/eROSITA survey, we present an N-body simulation-based mock catalogue for X-ray-selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) samples. The model reproduces the observed hard X-ray AGN luminosity function (XLF) and the soft X-ray logN-logS from redshift 0 to 6. The XLF is reproduced to within +/- 5 per cent and the logN-logS to within +/- 20 per cent. We develop a joint X-ray - optical extinction and classification model. We adopt a set of empirical spectral energy distributions to predict observed magnitudes in the UV, optical, and NIR. With the latest eROSITA all sky survey sensitivity model, we create a high-fidelity full-sky mock catalogue of X-ray AGN. It predicts their distributions in right ascension, declination, redshift, and fluxes. Using empirical medium resolution optical spectral templates and an exposure time calculator, we find that 1.1 x 10(6) (4 x 10(5)) fibre-hours are needed to follow-up spectroscopically from the ground the detected X-ray AGN with an optical magnitude 21 < r < 22.8 (22.8 < r < 25) with a 4-m (8-m) class multiobject spectroscopic facility. We find that future clustering studies will measure the AGN bias to the per cent level at redshift z < 1.2 and should discriminate possible scenarios of galaxy-AGN co-evolution. The absence of star formation in the bar region that has been reported for some galaxies can theoretically be explained by shear. However, it is not clear how star-forming (SF) bars fit into this picture and how the dynamical state of the bar is related to other properties of the host galaxy. We used integral-field spectroscopy from VLT/MUSE to investigate how star formation within bars is connected to structural properties of the bar and the host galaxy. We derived spatially resolved H$��$ fluxes from MUSE observations from the CARS survey to estimate star formation rates in the bars of 16 nearby ($0.01 < z < 0.06$) disc galaxies with stellar masses between $10^{10} M_\odot$ and $10^{11} M_\odot$. We further performed a detailed multicomponent photometric decomposition on images derived from the data cubes. We find that bars clearly divide into SF and non-star-forming (non-SF) types, of which eight are SF and eight are non-SF. Whatever the responsible quenching mechanism is, it is a quick process compared to the lifetime of the bar. The star formation of the bar appears to be linked to the flatness of the surface brightness profile in the sense that only the flattest bars $\left(n_\mathrm{bar} \leq 0.4\right)$ are actively SF $\left(\mathrm{SFR_{b}} > 0.5 M_\odot \mathrm{yr^{-1}}\right)$. Both parameters are uncorrelated with Hubble type. We find that star formation is 1.75 times stronger on the leading than on the trailing edge and is radially decreasing. The conditions to host non-SF bars might be connected to the presence of inner rings. Additionally, from testing an AGN feeding scenario, we report that the star formation rate of the bar is uncorrelated with AGN bolometric luminosity. We report spatially resolved [C ii] λ158 μm observations of HE 0433-1028, which is the first detection of a nearby luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN; redshift 0.0355) with the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI-LS) on board the airborne Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We compare the spatially resolved star formation tracers [C ii], as provided by our SOFIA observations, and Hα from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) optical integral-field spectroscopy. We find that the [C ii] emission is mainly matching the extended star formation as traced by the extinction-corrected Hα line emission but some additional flux is present. While a larger sample is needed to statistically confirm our findings and investigate possible dependencies on AGN luminosity and star formation rate, our study underlines the necessity of collecting a spatially resolved optical-far-infrared data set for nearby AGNs, and shows that it is technically feasible to collect such data sets with FIFI-LS on board SOFIA. © 2018. Aims. We probe the radiatively-efficient, hot wind feedback mode in two nearby luminous unobscured (type 1) AGN from the Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS), which show intriguing kpc-scale arc-like features of extended [O III]ionized gas as mapped with VLT-MUSE. We aimed to detect hot gas bubbles that would indicate the existence of powerful, galaxy-scale outflows in our targets, HE 0227-0931 and HE 0351+0240, from deep (200 ks) Chandra observations. Methods. By measuring the spatial and spectral properties of the extended X-ray emission and comparing with the sub kpc-scale IFU data, we are able to constrain feedback scenarios and directly test if the ionized gas is due to a shocked wind. Results. No extended hot gas emission on kpc-scales was detected. Unless the ambient medium density is low (n ∼ 1 cm at 100 pc), the inferred upper limits on the extended X-ray luminosities are well below what is expected from theoretical models at matching AGN luminosities. Conclusions. We conclude that the highly-ionized gas structures on kpc scales are not inflated by a hot outflow in either target, and instead are likely caused by photoionization of pre-existing gas streams of different origins. We present the clustering properties and halo occupation distribution (HOD) modelling of very low redshift, hard X-ray-detected active galactic nuclei (AGN) using cross-correlation function measurements with Two-Micron All Sky Survey galaxies. Spanning a redshift range of $0.007 < z < 0.037$, with a median $z=0.024$, we present a precise AGN clustering study of the most local AGN in the Universe. The AGN sample is drawn from the SWIFT/BAT 70-month and INTEGRAL/IBIS eight year all-sky X-ray surveys and contains both type I and type II AGN. We find a large-scale bias for the full AGN sample of $b=1.04^{+0.10}_{-0.11}$, which corresponds to a typical host dark matter halo mass of $M_{\rm h}^{\rm typ}=12.84^{+0.22}_{-0.30}\,h^{-1} M_{\odot}$. When split into low and high X-ray luminosity and type I and type II AGN subsamples, we detect no statistically significant differences in the large-scale bias parameters. However, there are differences in the small-scale clustering which are reflected in the full HOD model results. We find that low and high X-ray luminosity AGN, as well as type I and type II AGN, occupy dark matter haloes differently, with 3.4$\sigma$ and 4.0$\sigma$ differences in their mean halo masses, respectively, when split by luminosity and type. The latter finding contradicts a simple orientation-based AGN unification model. Which mechanism(s) are mainly driving nuclear activity in the centres of galaxies is a major unsettled question. In this study, we investigate the statistical relevance of galaxy mergers for fuelling gas onto the central few kpc of a galaxy, potentially resulting in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). To robustly address that, we employ large-scale cosmological hydrodynamic simulations from the Magneticum Pathfinder set, including models for BH accretion and AGN feedback. Our simulations predict that for luminous AGN ($L_{\rm AGN} > 10^{45} {\rm erg/s}$) at $z = 2$, more than 50 per cent of their host galaxies have experienced a merger in the last 0.5~Gyr. These high merger fractions, however, merely reflect the intrinsically high merger fractions of massive galaxies at $z=2$, in which luminous AGN preferentially occur. Apart from that, our simulations suggest that merger events are not the statistically dominant fuelling mechanism for nuclear activity over a redshift range $z=0-2$: irrespective of AGN luminosity, less than 20 per cent of AGN hosts have on average undergone a recent merger, in agreement with a number of observational studies. The central ISM conditions required for inducing AGN activity can be, but are not necessarily caused by a merger. Despite the statistically minor relevance of mergers, at a given AGN luminosity and stellar mass, the merger fractions of AGN hosts can be by up to three times higher than that of inactive galaxies. Aims. We report our finding of a high excitation emission line nebula associated with an Ultra Luminous X-ray source (ULX) at $z=$ 0.027, which we found in our Chandra observation of the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep Field. Methods. We present a Chandra X-ray and Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) optical spectral analysis of the ULX blob. We investigate the nature of the emission line nebula by using line ratio diagnostic diagrams, and its physical properties estimated from Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting. Results. The optical spectrum of this ULX blob shows emission line ratios that are located on the borderlines between star-formation and Seyfert regimes in [OIII]/H$\beta$-[OI]/H$\alpha$, [OIII]/H$\beta$-[SII]/H$\alpha$ and [OIII]/H$\beta$-[OIII]/[OII] diagnostic diagrams. These are in contrast with those of a nearby blob observed with the same slit, which occupy the HII regimes. This result suggests that the ionization of the emission line nebula associated with the ULX is significantly contributed by energy input from the accretion power of the ULX, in addition to the star formation activity in the blob, suggesting the existence of an accretion disk in the ULX emitting UV radiation, or exerting shock waves., Comment: preprint version, 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

After changing optical AGN type from 1.9 to 1 in 1984, the AGN Mrk 1018 recently reverted back to its type 1.9 state. Our ongoing monitoring now reveals that the AGN has halted its dramatic dimming, reaching a minimum around October 2016. The minimum was followed by an outburst rising with ~0.25 U-band mag/month. The rebrightening lasted at least until February 2017, as confirmed by joint Chandra and Hubble observations. Monitoring was resumed in July 2017 after the source emerged from sunblock, at which point the AGN was found only ~0.4 mag brighter than its minimum. The intermittent outburst was accompanied by the appearance of a red wing asymmetry in broad-line shape, indicative of an inhomogeneous broad-line region. The current flickering brightness of Mrk 1018 following its rapid fading either suggests that the source has reignited, remains variable at a low level, or may continue dimming over the next few years. We present the broadband X-ray properties of four of the most X-ray luminous (L{sub X} {>=} 10{sup 45} erg s{sup -1} in the 0.5-2 keV band) radio-quiet QSOs found in the ROSAT Bright Survey. This uniform sample class, which explores the extreme end of the QSO luminosity function, exhibits surprisingly homogenous X-ray spectral properties: a soft excess with an extremely smooth shape containing no obvious discrete features, a hard power law above 2 keV, and a weak narrow/barely resolved Fe K{alpha} fluorescence line for the three high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectra. The soft excess can be well fitted with only a soft power law. No signatures of warm or cold intrinsic absorbers are found. The Fe K{alpha} centroids and the line widths indicate emission from neutral Fe (E = 6.4 keV) originating from cold material from distances of only a few light days or further out. The well-constrained equivalent widths (EW) of the neutral Fe lines are higher than expected from the X-ray Baldwin effect which has been only poorly constrained at very high luminosities. Taking into account our individual EW measurements, we show that the X-ray Baldwin effect flattens above L{sub X} {approx} 10{sup 44} erg s{sup -1} (2-10more » keV band) where an almost constant (EW) of {approx}100 eV is found. We confirm the assumption of having very similar X-ray active galactic nucleus properties when interpreting stacked X-ray spectra. Our stacked spectrum serves as a superb reference for the interpretation of low S/N spectra of radio-quiet QSOs with similar luminosities at higher redshifts routinely detected by XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys.« less

We present the clustering measurement of hard X-ray selected AGN in the local Universe. We used a sample of 199 sources spectroscopically confirmed detected by Swift-BAT in its 15-55 keV all-sky survey. We measured the real space projected auto-correlation function and detected a signal significant on projected scales lower than 200 Mpc/h. We measured a correlation length of r0=5.56+0.49-0.43 Mpc/h and a slope {\gamma}=1.64-0.08 -0.07. We also measured the auto-correlation function of Type I and Type II AGN and found higher correlation length for Type I AGN. We have a marginal evidence of luminosity dependent clustering of AGN, as we detected a larger correlation length of luminous AGN than that of low luminosity sources. The corresponding typical host DM halo masses of Swift-BAT are log(MDMH) 12-14 h^-1 M/M_sun, depending on the subsample. For the whole sample we measured log(MDMH)\sim 13.15 h-1 M/M_sun which is the typical mass of a galaxy group. We estimated that the local AGN population has a typical lifetime tau_AGN \sim 0.7 Gyr, it is powered by SMBH with mass MBH \sim 1-10x10^8 M_\odot and accreting with very low efficiency, log(epsilon)-2.0. We also conclude that local AGN host galaxies are typically red-massive galaxies with stellar mass of the order 2-80x10^10 h^-1 M_sun. We compared our results with clustering predictions of merger-driven AGN triggering models and found a good agreement.

The cataclysmic binary V405 Peg, originally discovered as ROSAT Bright Source (RBS) 1955 (= 1 RXS J230949.6 + 213523), shows a strong contribution from a late-type secondary star in its optical spectrum. This led Schwope et al. to suggest that it is among the nearest cataclysmic binaries. Here we present extensive optical observations of V405 Peg. Time-series spectroscopy shows the orbital period, Porb, to be 0.1776469(7) days (= 4.2635 hr), or 5.629 cycles day-1. We classify the secondary star as M3-M4.5, and estimate its contribution to the light. Astrometry with the MDM 2.4 m telescope gives a parallax πabs = 7.2 ± 1.1 mas, and a relative proper motion of 58 ± 1 mas yr-1. We employ a Bayesian technique to form a best estimate of the distance from the parallax and other indicators; this yields d = 149(+26,-20) pc. The semiamplitude of the secondary stars's radial velocity is K2 = 92 ± 3 km s-1, indicating a fairly low orbital inclination if the masses are typical. Extensive time-series observations in the I band show the system varying between a minimum brightness level of I = 14.14 mag and states of enhanced activity about 0.2 mag brighter. During the low state, the light curve is dominated by ellipsoidal modulation of the secondary star at a period consistent with the spectroscopic value. In the high state, we detect an additional photometric modulation with ~0.1 mag mag amplitude, which occurs in the range 220-280 minutes. The frequency of this modulation appears to be stable for a month or so, but no single period was consistently detected from one observing season to the next. The occurrence of low states can be reconciled with a magnetic cataclysmic variable. While the additional signal could point to an asynchronously rotating white dwarf, our data do not show this signal to be truly coherent. We estimate the system luminosity by combining optical measurements with the archival X-ray spectrum. The implied mass accretion rate is orders of magnitudes below the predictions for the standard angular momentum loss above the period gap. The system may possibly belong to a largely undiscovered population of hibernating cataclysmic variable stars.

One of the most important parameters in the XRB (X-ray background) synthesis models is the average efficiency of accretion onto SMBH (super-massive black holes). This can be inferred from the shape of broad relativistic Fe lines seen in X-ray spectra of AGN (active galactic nuclei). Several studies have tried to measure the mean Fe emission properties of AGN at different depths with very different results. We compute the mean Fe emission from a large and representative sample of AGN X-ray spectra up to redshift ~ 3.5. We developed a method of computing the rest-frame X-ray average spectrum and applied it to a large sample (more than 600 objects) of type 1 AGN from two complementary medium sensitivity surveys based on XMM-Newton data, the AXIS and XWAS samples. This method makes use of medium-to-low quality spectra without needing to fit complex models to the individual spectra but with computing a mean spectrum for the whole sample. Extensive quality tests were performed by comparing real to simulated data, and a significance for the detection of any feature over an underlying continuum was derived. We detect with a 99.9% significance an unresolved Fe K-alpha emission line around 6.4 keV with an EW ~ 90 eV, but we find no compelling evidence of any significant broad relativistic emission line in the final average spectrum. Deviations from a power law around the narrow line are best represented by a reflection component arising from cold or low-ionization material. We estimate an upper limit for the EW of any relativistic line of 400 eV at a 3 sigma confidence level. We also marginally detect the so-called Iwasawa-Taniguchi effect on the EW for the unresolved emission line, which appears weaker for higher luminosity AGN.

We present the analysis and results of a 20 ks XMM-Newton observation of RBS1423. X-ray spectral analysis is used to establish a significantly broadened relativistic iron K-alpha line from a highly ionised disk. A QSO at z=2.262 was considered to be the optical counterpart of this ROSAT Bright Survey X-ray source. Based on the improved XMM-Newton source position we identified a z=0.208 QSO as optical counterpart to RBS1423. The 0.2-12 keV X-ray luminosity of this radio-quiet QSO is 6x10^{44} erg/s. The XMM-EPIC spectra are well described by a power law with a significantly broadened iron K-alpha line. Disk line models for both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes require hydrogen-like iron ions to fit the measured line profile. Significant ionisation of the reflection disk is confirmed by model fits with ionised disk models, resulting in an ionisation parameter xi~2000., 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (2 April 2007)

We argue that the `changing look' AGN recently reported by LaMassa et al. could be a luminous flare produced by the tidal disruption of a super-solar mass star passing just a few gravitational radii outside the event horizon of a $\sim 10^8 M_{\odot}$ nuclear black hole. This flare occurred in a massive, star forming galaxy at redshift $z=0.312$, robustly characterized thanks to repeated late-time photometric and spectroscopic observations. By taking difference-photometry of the well sampled multi-year SDSS Stripe-82 light-curve, we are able to probe the evolution of the nuclear spectrum over the course of the outburst. The tidal disruption event (TDE) interpretation is consistent with the very rapid rise and the decay time of the flare, which displays an evolution consistent with the well-known $t^{-5/3}$ behaviour (with a clear superimposed re-brightening flare). Our analysis places constraints on the physical properties of the TDE, such as the putative disrupted star's mass and orbital parameters, as well as the size and temperature of the emitting material. The properties of the broad and narrow emission lines observed in two epochs of SDSS spectra provide further constraints on the circum-nuclear structure, and could be indicative that the system hosted a moderate-luminosity AGN as recently as a few $10^4$ years ago, and is likely undergoing residual accretion as late as ten years after peak, as seen from the broad H$\alpha$ emission line. We discuss the complex interplay between tidal disruption events and gas accretion episodes in galactic nuclei, highlighting the implications for future TDE searches and for estimates of their intrinsic rates., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. 4MOST is a wide-field, high-multiplex spectroscopic survey facility under development for the VISTA telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Its main science drivers are in the fields of galactic archeology, high-energy physics, galaxy evolution and cosmology. 4MOST will in particular provide the spectroscopic complements to the large area surveys coming from space missions like Gaia, eROSITA, Euclid, and PLATO and from ground-based facilities like VISTA, VST, DES, LSST and SKA. The 4MOST baseline concept features a 2.5 degree diameter field-of-view with similar to 2400 fibres in the focal surface that are configured by a fibre positioner based on the tilting spine principle. The fibres feed two types of spectrographs; similar to 1600 fibres go to two spectrographs with resolution R> 5000 (lambda similar to 390-930 nm) and similar to 800 fibres to a spectrograph with R> 18,000 (lambda similar to 392-437 nm & 515-572 nm & 605-675 nm). Both types of spectrographs are fixed-configuration, three-channel spectrographs. 4MOST will have an unique operations concept in which 5 year public surveys from both the consortium and the ESO community will be combined and observed in parallel during each exposure, resulting in more than 25 million spectra of targets spread over a large fraction of the southern sky. The 4MOST Facility Simulator (4FS) was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of this observing concept. 4MOST has been accepted for implementation by ESO with operations expected to start by the end of 2020. This paper provides a top-level overview of the 4MOST facility, while other papers in these proceedings provide more detailed descriptions of the instrument concept[1], the instrument requirements development[2], the systems engineering implementation[3], the instrument model[4], the fibre positioner concepts[5], the fibre feed[6], and the spectrographs[7].

Despite substantial effort, the precise physical processes that lead to the growth of super-massive black holes in the centers of galaxies are still not well understood. These phases of black hole growth are thought to be of key importance in understanding galaxy evolution. Forthcoming missions such as eROSITA, HETDEX, eBOSS, BigBOSS, LSST, and Pan-STARRS will compile by far the largest ever Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) catalogs which will allow us to measure the spatial distribution of AGNs in the universe with unprecedented accuracy. For the first time, AGN clustering measurements will reach a level of precision that will not only allow for an alternative approach to answering open questions in AGN/galaxy co-evolution but will open a new frontier, allowing us to precisely determine cosmological parameters. This paper reviews the large-scale clustering measurements of broad line AGNs. We summarize how clustering is measured and which constraints can be derived from AGN clustering measurements, we discuss recent developments, and we briefly describe future projects that will deliver extremely large AGN samples which will enable AGN clustering measurements of unprecedented accuracy. We present a clustering analysis of X-ray selected AGN by compiling X-ray samples from the literature and re-estimating the dark matter (DM) halo masses of AGN in a uniform manner. We find that moderate luminosity AGN (Lx(2-10 keV)=10^42-10^44 erg/sec) in the z=0-1.3 Universe are typically found in DM haloes with masses of ~10^13 Msun. We then compare our findings to the theoretical predictions of the coupled galaxy and black hole formation model GALFORM. We find good agreement when our calculation includes the hot-halo mode of accretion onto the central black hole. This type of accretion, which is additional to the common cold accretion during disk instabilities and galaxy mergers, is tightly coupled to the AGN feedback in the model. The hot-halo mode becomes prominent in DM haloes with masses greater than ~10^12.5 Msun, where AGN feedback typically operates, giving rise to a distinct class of moderate luminosity AGN that inhabit rich clusters and superclusters. Cold gas fuelling of the black hole cannot produce the observationally inferred DM halo masses of X-ray AGN. Switching off AGN feedback in the model results in a large population of luminous quasars (Lx(2-10 keV) > 10^44 erg/sec) in DM haloes with masses up to ~10^14 Msun, which is inconsistent with the observed clustering of quasars. The abundance of hot-halo AGN decreases significantly in the z~3-4 universe. At such high redshifts, the cold accretion mode is solely responsible for shaping the environment of moderate luminosity AGN. [Aims]: This programme is aimed at obtaining one of the largest X-ray selected samples of identified active galactic nuclei to date in order to characterise such a population at intermediate fluxes, where most of the Universe's accretion power originates.We present the XMM-NewtonWide Angle Survey (XWAS), a new catalogue of almost a thousand X-ray sources spectroscopically identified through optical observations. [Methods]: A sample of X-ray sources detected in 68 XMM-Newton pointed observations was selected for optical multi-fibre spectroscopy. Optical counterparts and corresponding photometry of the X-ray sources were obtained from the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey. Candidates for spectroscopy were initially selected with magnitudes down to R ~ 21, with preference for X-ray sources having a flux F0.5-4.5keV = 10-14 erg s-1 cm-2. Optical spectroscopic observations were made using the Two Degree Field of the Anglo Australian Telescope, and the resulting spectra were classified based on optical emission lines. [Results]: We have identified through optical spectroscopy 940 X-ray sources over O ~ 11.8 deg2 of the sky. Source populations in our sample can be summarised as 65% broad line active galactic nuclei (BLAGN), 16% narrow emission line galaxies (NELGs), 6% absorption line galaxies (ALGs) and 13% stars. An active nucleus is also likely to be present in the large majority of the X-ray sources spectroscopically classified as NELGs or ALGs. Sources lie in high-galactic latitude (|b| 20 deg) XMM-Newton fields mainly in the southern hemisphere. Owing to the large parameter space in redshift (0 = z = 4.25) and flux (10-15 = F0.5-4.5keV = 10-12 erg s-1 cm-2) covered by the XWAS this work provides an excellent resource for the further study of subsamples and particular cases. The overall properties of the extragalactic objects are presented in this paper. We recently discovered that the active galactic nucleus (AGN) of Mrk 1018 has changed optical type again after 30 years as a type 1 AGN. Here we combine Chandra, NuStar, Swift, Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based observations to explore the cause of this change. The 2-10keV flux declines by a factor of ~8 between 2010 and 2016. We show with our X-ray observation that this is not caused by varying neutral hydrogen absorption along the line-of-sight up to the Compton-thick level. The optical-UV spectral energy distributions are well fit with a standard geometrically thin optically thick accretion disc model that seems to obey the expected $L\sim T^4$ relation. It confirms that a decline in accretion disc luminosity is the primary origin for the type change. We detect a new narrow-line absorber in Lya blue-shifted by ~700km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. This new Lya absorber could be evidence for the onset of an outflow or a companion black hole with associated gas that could be related to the accretion rate change. However, the low column density of the absorber means that it is not the direct cause for Mrk 1018's changing-look nature., 4 pages, 4 figures, Published in A&A

The 4MOST consortium is currently halfway through a Conceptual Design study for ESO with the aim to develop a wide-field (>3 square degree, goal >5 square degree), high-multiplex (>1500 fibres, goal 3000 fibres) spectroscopic survey facility for an ESO 4m-class telescope (VISTA). 4MOST will run permanently on the telescope to perform a 5 year public survey yielding more than 20 million spectra at resolution R~5000 (��=390-1000 nm) and more than 2 million spectra at R~20,000 (395-456.5 nm & 587-673 nm). The 4MOST design is especially intended to complement three key all-sky, space-based observatories of prime European interest: Gaia, eROSITA and Euclid. Initial design and performance estimates for the wide-field corrector concepts are presented. We consider two fibre positioner concepts, a well-known Phi-Theta system and a new R-Theta concept with a large patrol area. The spectrographs are fixed configuration two-arm spectrographs, with dedicated spectrographs for the high- and low-resolution. A full facility simulator is being developed to guide trade-off decisions regarding the optimal field-of-view, number of fibres needed, and the relative fraction of high-to-low resolution fibres. Mock catalogues with template spectra from seven Design Reference Surveys are simulated to verify the science requirements of 4MOST. We investigate the clustering properties of ~1550 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at =0.25 detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) through their measured cross-correlation function with ~46,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By measuring the cross-correlation of our AGN sample with a larger tracer set of LRGs, we both minimize shot noise errors due to the relatively small AGN sample size and avoid systematic errors due to the spatially varying Galactic absorption that would affect direct measurements of the auto-correlation function (ACF) of the AGN sample. The measured ACF correlation length for the total RASS-AGN sample (=1.5 x 10^(44) erg/s) is r_0=4.3^{+0.4}_{-0.5} h^(-1) Mpc and the slope \gamma=1.7^{+0.1}_{-0.1}. Splitting the sample into low and high L_X samples at L_(0.5-10 keV)=10^(44) erg/s, we detect an X-ray luminosity dependence of the clustering amplitude at the ~2.5 \sigma level. The low L_X sample has r_0=3.3^{+0.6}_{-0.8} h^(-1) Mpc (\gamma=1.7^{+0.4}_{-0.3}), which is similar to the correlation length of blue star-forming galaxies at low redshift. The high L_X sample has r_0=5.4^{+0.7}_{-1.0} h^(-1) Mpc (\gamma=1.9^{+0.2}_{-0.2}), which is consistent with the clustering of red galaxies. From the observed clustering amplitude, we infer that the typical dark matter halo (DMH) mass harboring RASS-AGN with broad optical emission lines is log (M_DMH/(h^(-1) M_SUN)) =12.6^{+0.2}_{-0.3}, 11.8^{+0.6}_{-\infty}, 13.1^{+0.2}_{-0.4} for the total, low L_X, and high L_X RASS-AGN samples, respectively., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, 713, 558 (2010), 16 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

[Aims]: We discuss the broad band X-ray properties of one of the largest samples of X-ray selected type-1 AGN to date (487 objects in total), drawn from the XMM-Newton Wide Angle Survey (XWAS). The objects presented in this work cover 2-10 keV (rest-frame) luminosities from ~1042-1045 erg s-1 and are detected up to redshift ~4. We constrain the overall properties of the broad band continuum, soft excess and X-ray absorption, along with their dependence on the X-ray luminosity and redshift. We discuss the implications for models of AGN emission. [Methods]: We fitted the observed 0.2-12 keV broad band spectra with various models to search for X-ray absorption and soft excess. The F-test was used with a significance threshold of 99% to statistically accept the detection of additional spectral components. [Results]: We constrained the mean spectral index of the broad band X-ray continuum to (Γ) = 1.96 ± 0.02 with intrinsic dispersion (Γ) = 0.27 +o.01 -0.02. The continuum becomes harder at faint fluxes and at higher redshifts and hard (2-10 keV) luminosities. The dependence of Γ with flux is likely due to undetected absorption rather than to spectral variation. We found a strong dependence of the detection efficiency of objects on the spectral shape. We expect this effect to have an impact on the measured mean continuum shapes of sources at different redshifts and luminosities. We detected excess absorption in >~3% of our objects, with rest-frame column densities ~a few * 1022 cm-2. The apparent mismatch between the optical classification and X-ray properties of these objects is a challenge for the standard orientation-based AGN unification model. We found that the fraction of objects with detected soft excess is ~36%. Using a thermal model, we constrained the soft excess mean rest-frame temperature and intrinsic dispersion to kT ~ 100 eV and kT ~ 34 eV. The origin of the soft excess as thermal emission from the accretion disk or Compton scattered disk emission is ruled out on the basis of the temperatures detected and the lack of correlation of the soft excess temperature with the hard X-ray luminosity over more than 2 orders of magnitude in luminosity. Furthermore, the high luminosities of the soft excess rule out an origin in the host galaxy., SM, MW and JAT acknowledge support from the UK STFC research council. We investigate the clustering propertiesof ∼1550 low‐redshift broad‐line AGNs detected in the ROSAT All‐Sky Survey (RASS) through a cross‐correlation function (CCF) with ∼46000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using this approach, we avoid small‐number statistics and systematic errors caused by the variation of the Galactic absorption compared to a direct measurement of the AGN auto‐correlation function (ACF).We compute the ACF of low‐z RASS‐AGN based on the CCF for the total X‐ray sample ( = 0.25) and found a correlation length of r0 = 4.3−0.4+0.4 h−1 Mpc. Furthermore, we discovered an X‐ray luminosity dependence of the clustering signal, i.e. high luminosity AGN cluster stronger than low luminosity AGN. We have also applied a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model directly to our AGN‐LRG CCF.

We present the analysis of XMM‐Newton spectra of four of the most X‐ray luminous (LX≥1045 erg s−1) radio‐quiet QSOs found in the ROSAT Bright Survey (RBS). We show that objects exhibit surprisingly uniform properties in their X‐ray spectra. All objects show a soft excess and a weak narrow Fe Kα fluorescence line. A self‐consistent disk reflection model is applied to all objects so we can test the current theoretical understanding of complex multi‐component AGN X‐ray spectra.

From optical photometry we show that SDSSJ121258.25-012310.1 is a new eclipsing, post common-envelope binary with an orbital period of 8.06 hours and an eclipse length of 23 minutes. We observed the object over 11 nights in different bands and determined the ephemeris of the eclipse to HJD_mid = 2454104. 7086(2) + 0.3358706(5) x E, where numbers in parenthesis indicate the uncertainties in the last digit. The depth of the eclipse is 2.85 +/- 0.17 mag in the V band, 1.82 +/- 0.08 mag in the R band and 0.52 +/- 0.02 mag in the I band. From spectroscopic observations we measured the semi-amplitude of the radial velocity K_2 = 181 +/- 3 km/s for the secondary star. The stellar and binary parameters of the system were constrained from a) fitting the SDSS composite spectrum of the binary, b) using a K-band luminosty-mass relation for the secondary star, and c) from detailed analyses of the eclipse light curve. The white dwarf has an effective temperature of 17700 +/- 300 K, and its surface gravity is logg =7.53 +/- 0.2. We estimate that the spectral type of the red dwarf is M4 +/- 1 and the distance to the system is 230 +/- 20 parsec. The mass of the secondary star is estimated to be in the range Msec = 0.26-0.29 Msun, while the mass of the white dwarf is most likely Mwd = 0.46-0.48 Msun. From an empirical mass-radius relation we estimate the radius of the red dwarf to be in the range 0.28-0.31 Rsun, whereas we get Rwd = 0.016-0.018 Rsun from a theoretical mass-radius realation.
