Gender-based Violence (GBV) during the perinatal period is a serious concern as it is associated with many adverse outcomes for both the mother and the baby. It is well known that violence is under-reported. Thus, official statistics (both police reports and survey data) underestimate the prevalence of violence in general and during the perinatal period specifically. In this study conducted in Canada, we sought to explore the barriers to and facilitators of women disclosing their experiences of GBV within healthcare services to safely facilitate more disclosure in the future and reduce the harms that arise from GBV. We used thematic analysis to analyze in-depth interviews with 16 healthcare providers (nurses, midwives and physicians) and 12 survivors of GBV. The data reflect three main themes: 'raising awareness of gender-based violence', 'creating a shift in the healthcare system's approach toward gender-based violence' and 'providing support for survivors and care providers.' Our findings suggest that the healthcare system should increase its investments in raising awareness regarding GBV, training healthcare providers to respond appropriately, and building trust between survivors and healthcare providers. Healthcare providers need to be aware of their role and responsibility regarding identifying GBV as well as how to support survivors who talk about violence. The birth of preterm multiple new-borns, especially triplets or more, creates numerous psychological and clinical challenges for parents during the neonatal and infancy period. This study investigated parents' experiences of parenting preterm multiple-birth new-borns. A qualitative study was undertaken using an interpretive phenomenology study methodology. The study sample was created purposively yielding 15 parents who were parenting three or more premature new-borns with one or more of them admitted to the neonatal intensive care (NICU). Four main themes were constructed during data analysis. These included: 'being abandoned in an unknown endless path'; 'constant erosive concerns'; 'sacrificial self-forgetfulness'; and 'the manifestation of growth and maturity'. The parents of preterm multiple-birth neonates described how their experiences ranged along a continuum from bitter to sweet sifting and between these two emotional states was common. Optimizing their experiences, to be more sweet than bitter, can be realized through supportive and individualized family-centred care.

This study aimed to explore children's perspective of hope in living with leukemia through the utilization of drawing-based interview technique. This qualitative study was conducted at the Children's Medical Center in Tehran with the participation of children aged 6 to 12 diagnosed with leukemia. The children were asked to prepare a drawing about hope then interviews were conducted face-to-face with each child after completing the drawing. Data analysis was conducted using the qualitative content analysis. In the collection of a total of 20 drawings from school-age children with leukemia, each drawings has different metaphors symbolizing hope. Five themes emerged including positive thinking, embracing the sanctuary of maternal affection and collective caring, the ethereal glow of joy, the melody of resilient soul, and navigating the way back to home. Hope from the child's perspective can be achieved in simple, possible and accessible ways, making it easier for the family, community and healthcare system to inspire hope in their lives with Leukemia. Health providers in pediatric oncology can integrate hope-based care interventions related to the factors influencing children's perspectives. • Hope is an abstract concept that is perceived by school-age children with leukemia as a real component of their disease. • The concept of hope is demonstrated by positive thinking, happiness, care and compassion, resilience, recovery and return home. • Nurses' interventions can be improved according to dimensions of perceived hope among school-aged children with leukemia. Background. The proper implementation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is crucial in saving patients. Purpose. This study was aimed at evaluating the difference in educating nursing students on CPR when using the traditional simulation training with a mannequin versus a more novel serious game training on the smartphone platform. Methods. This randomized control trial was conducted in 2018-2019. Through purposive sampling, 56 nursing students were selected and randomly assigned to three groups: a simulation-based CPR training, CPR training using a serious game on the smartphone platform, and a control group that received no CPR training. Each student was evaluated pre- and posttraining on CPR knowledge and skill. Results. Both the simulation and serious game training groups increased CPR abilities two weeks after training. The control group did not show improvement in skill or knowledge of CPR. The simulation and serious game intervention groups demonstrated better scores on the knowledge questionnaire and on the CPR skill demonstration in comparison to the control group. However, the simulation group and the serious game group showed no significant difference in knowledge (9.55±2.81 vs. 7.77±2.46; p=0.065) or CPR skill demonstration (27.17±2.81 vs. 25.72±3.98; p=0.988). The overall scores for CPR knowledge did not meet minimum expectations (70% score) in either the simulation (47.75%) or serious game (38.85%) group. However, both groups demonstrated adequate CPR skill on demonstration (simulation 87.64% and serious game 83.06%). Conclusions. Both the simulation and serious game training groups were found to increase CPR skill. This qualitative study aimed to explore Iranian women's life stories living with compulsive sexual behaviour. Data were collected between 2014 and 2016 in two cities. Forty‐four semi‐structured interviews were conducted by using theoretical sampling and constant comparative analysis. Four thematic categories were constructed from the data, including "scars left on the spirit and mind,"; "bizarre beliefs regarding sexuality and gender,"; "compensation for emptiness and the loss,"; and "difficulty in emotional regulation." This paper shows how abusive patterns of relationships in childhood could lead to sexual compulsivity. Introduction: Endotracheal suctioning is one of the procedures that can cause pain and stress for infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Pain and stress can be manifested with physiological and behavioral responses. This study is a crossover randomized clinical trial design that aimed to investigate the effect of endotracheal suctioning, using four-handed care on the physiological criteria and behavioral responses of preterm infants. Methods: In this study, 40 infants were randomly divided into two groups of 20, one group was first suctioned by the routine method (two hands) and then with the four-handed method. The other group was first suctioned by the four-handed method and then with the routine one. The ALPS-Neo (Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital Pain Scale Neonates) was used to evaluate pain and stress in infants. One camera recorded facial expressions and body movements, and physiological data were recorded from the monitor simultaneously. Results: Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed no statistically significant difference in changes in arterial saturation, heart rate and behavioral response scores between the two methods, but there was a significant difference in the mean heart rate of infants during and two minutes after suctioning in four-handed method using independent t test. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 13. Conclusion: Four-handed suctioning method can prevent an increase in the heart rate during and two minutes after suctioning, but it does not seem to affect behavioral responses and oxygen saturation of the infants. Since one of the symptoms of pain and stress in infants is the change of vital signs, especially the heart rate, we recommend four-handed method for suctioning of endotracheal tube. Background: Examination for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the procedures that can be stressful for neonates admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. This study compared breast milk and sucrose in pain relief and coping with the stress of ROP examination using the Astrid Lindgren and Lund Children’s Hospital Pain and Stress Assessment Scale for Preterm and Sick Newborn Infants (ALPS-Neo). Methods: The present study was carried out on a total of 63 preterm infants (including breast milk group [n=21], sucrose group [n=21], and distilled water group [n=21]). The neonates were given 0.5 ml/kg of breast milk, sucrose, or distilled water 2 min before the examination. The ROP eye examinations were video recorded from 5 min before to 15 min after the examination, and infants’ pain and stress levels were assessed using the ALPS-Neo by two blinded evaluators 5 min before, during, and 5, 10, and 15 min after the examination. Results: No statistically significant differences were observed during the examinations in the mean scores of the ALPSNeo among the three groups (P>0.05). However, there were statistically significant differences among the three groups after the examinations (P<0.05) and in the mean duration of stress adaptation (P<0.05). The duration of stress adaptation in the breast milk group was 11.4 min on average which was lower than that reported for the other groups. Conclusion: Breast milk was more effective in the reduction of pain and stress after ROP examinations, compared to sucrose or distilled water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
