Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

2. Time-dependent, spherically symmetric background in Kaluza-Klein compactified Horndeski theory and the speed of gravity waves

Abstract: We revisit the models recently derived from a Kaluza-Klein compactification of higher dimensional Horndeski theory, where the resulting electromagnetic sector features non-trivial couplings to Horndeski scalar. In particular, this class of theories admits the electromagnetic waves propagating at non-unit speed, which in turn allows to relax the constraints on Horndeski theories following from multi-messenger speed test. In this work we prove that both gravitational wave and its electromagnetic counterpart propagate at the same, although non-unit, speed above an arbitrarily time-dependent, spherically symmetric background within the theories in question. Hence, we support the statement that several subclasses of Horndeski theories are not necessarily ruled out after the GW170817 event provided the photon-Galileon couplings are allowed. 3. Higher derivative SVT theories from Kaluza-Klein reductions of Horndeski theory

Abstract: It was recently pointed out that some precise Photon-Galileon couplings in four dimensions (4D) -- inspired by a higher dimensional reduction -- are enough to obtain a Horndeski theory that is less constrained by the stringent experimental bounds on the speed of Gravitational Waves. They imply the constancy of the ratio of speed of gravity to light throughout cosmic evolution. This holds without fine tuning, even if one includes the general $G_4 (\pi,X)$ and $G_5 (\pi)$ scalar potentials. In this paper we go into the details of this 4D Luminal extension of Horndeski theory including its scalar sector. We also present the complete action including the general $G_5(\pi,X),\, G_6(\pi,X)$ scalar potentials. Thus we show all the $U(1)$ gauge invariant vector Galileons in 4D that result from a Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction from 5D Galileons. They provide a consistent coupling of a higher derivative vector to scalar modifications of gravity - namely, without inducing Ostrogradsky ghosts and keeping gauge invariance- in the aim to explore more universal couplings of dark energy to other matter, such as vectors and in particular the Photon., Comment: 22 pages

4. Linear stability of a time-dependent, spherically symmetric background in beyond Horndeski theory and the speed of gravity waves

Abstract: We address a dynamical, spherically symmetric background in beyond Horndeski theory and formulate a set of linear stability conditions for high energy perturbation modes above an arbitrary solution. In this general setting we derive speeds of propagation in both radial and angular directions for gravity waves and compare them with the speed of light in the case of minimally coupled photon. In particular, we find that the class of beyond Horndeski theories, which satisfy the equality of gravity waves' speed to the speed of light over a cosmological background, feature gravity waves propagating at luminal speeds above a time-dependent inhomogeneous background as well., Comment: 8 pages

Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

6. Jointly cyclic polynomials and maximal domains

Abstract: For a (not necessarily locally convex) topological vector space $\mathcal{X}$ of holomorphic functions in one complex variable, we show that the shift invariant subspace generated by a set of polynomials is $\mathcal{X}$ if and only if their common vanishing set contains no point at which the evaluation functional is continuous. For two variables, we show that this problem can be reduced to determining the cyclicity of a single polynomial and obtain partial results for more than two variables. We proceed to examine the maximal domain, i.e., the set of all points for which the evaluation functional is continuous. When $\mathcal{X}$ is metrizable, we show that the maximal domain must be an $F_\sigma$ set, and then construct Hilbert function spaces on the unit disk whose maximal domain is the disk plus an arbitrary subset of the boundary that is both $F_\sigma$ and $G_\delta$., Comment: 16 pages

7. Model-based Policy Optimization using Symbolic World Model

Abstract: The application of learning-based control methods in robotics presents significant challenges. One is that model-free reinforcement learning algorithms use observation data with low sample efficiency. To address this challenge, a prevalent approach is model-based reinforcement learning, which involves employing an environment dynamics model. We suggest approximating transition dynamics with symbolic expressions, which are generated via symbolic regression. Approximation of a mechanical system with a symbolic model has fewer parameters than approximation with neural networks, which can potentially lead to higher accuracy and quality of extrapolation. We use a symbolic dynamics model to generate trajectories in model-based policy optimization to improve the sample efficiency of the learning algorithm. We evaluate our approach across various tasks within simulated environments. Our method demonstrates superior sample efficiency in these tasks compared to model-free and model-based baseline methods.

Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: We extend our consideration of commutative subalgebras (rays) in different representations of the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra to the elliptic Hall algebra (or, equivalently, to the Ding-Iohara-Miki (DIM) algebra $U_{q,t}(\widehat{\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}}_1)$). Its advantage is that it possesses the Miki automorphism, which makes all commutative rays equivalent. Integrable systems associated with these rays become finite-difference and, apart from the trigonometric Ruijsenaars system not too much familiar. We concentrate on the simplest many-body and Fock representations, and derive explicit formulas for all generators of the elliptic Hall algebra $e_{n,m}$. In the one-body representation, they differ just by normalization from $z^nq^{m\hat D}$ of the $W_{1+\infty}$ Lie algebra, and, in the $N$-body case, they are non-trivially generalized to monomials of the Cherednik operators with action restricted to symmetric polynomials. In the Fock representation, the resulting operators are expressed through auxiliary polynomials of $n$ variables, which define weights in the residues formulas. 10. Inverse spin galvanic effect in proximitized superconductor/paramagnet systems

Abstract: We show that the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the paramagnetic response of itinerant electrons in proximitized superconductor/paramagnet systems gives rise to the inverse spin galvanic effect, i.e. generation of magnetic moment under the influence of the charge current. Depending on the sign of the SOC constant and the system temperature, the corresponding contribution to the magnetic response of the superconductor can be either diamagnetic or paramagnetic. Abstract: Intense highly charged ion beam production is essential for high-power heavy ion accelerators. A novel movable Vlasov launcher for superconducting high charge state Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source has been devised that can affect the microwave power effectiveness by a factor of about 4 in terms of highly charged ion beam production. This approach based on a dedicated microwave launching system instead of the traditional coupling scheme has led to new insight on microwave-plasma interaction. With this new understanding, the world record highly charged xenon ion beam currents have been enhanced by up to a factor of 2, which could directly and significantly enhance the performance of heavy ion accelerators and provide many new research opportunities in nuclear physics, atomic physics and other disciplines.

12. Photogalvanic phenomena in superconductors supporting intrinsic diode effect

Abstract: In this work we suggest a phenomenological theory of photogalvanic phenomena in superconducting materials and structures revealing the diode effect. Starting from a generalized London model including the quadratic nonlinearity in the relation between the supercurrent and superfluid velocity we show that the electromagnetic wave incident on the superconductor can generate a nontrivial superconducting phase difference between the ends of the sample. Being enclosed in a superconducting loop such phase battery should generate a dc supercurrent circulating in the loop. 13. Primary and secondary source of energy in the superluminous supernova 2018ibb

Abstract: We examine the pair-instability origin of superluminous supernova 2018ibb. As the base model, we use a non-rotating stellar model with an initial mass of 250 Msun at about 1/15 solar metallicity. We consider three versions of the model as input for radiative transfer simulations done with the STELLA and ARTIS codes: with 25 Msun of 56Ni, 34 Msun of 56Ni, and a chemically mixed case with 34 Msun of 56Ni. We present light curves and spectra in comparison to the observed data of SN 2018ibb, and conclude that the pair-instability supernova model with 34 Msun of 56Ni explains broad-band light curves reasonably well between -100 and 250 days around the peak. Our synthetic spectra have many similarities with the observed spectra. The luminosity excess in the light curves and the blue-flux excess in the spectra can be explained by an additional energy source, which may be interaction of the SN ejecta with circumstellar matter. 14. Healthy Horndeski cosmologies with torsion

Thus, with torsion, the usual No-Go theorem that holds in a curved spacetime is avoided. In particular, it is essential to include the nonminimal derivative couplings of the $\mathcal{L}_{5}$ part of the Horndeski action ($G^{\mu\nu}\,\nabla_\mu \nabla_\nu \phi,$ and $(\nabla^2 \phi)^3$). 16. Reviving Horndeski after GW170817 by Kaluza-Klein compactifications

Abstract: The application of Horndeski theory/ Galileons for late time cosmology is heavily constrained by the strict coincidence in the speed of propagation of gravitational and electromagnetic waves. These constraints presuppose that the minimally coupled photon is not modified, not even at the scales where General Relativity (GR) may need modification. We find that the 4D Galileon obtained from a Kaluza-Klein compactification of its higher dimensional version is a natural simultaneous modification of GR and electromagnetism with automatically "luminal" gravitational waves. This property follows without any fine tuning of Galileon potentials for a larger class of theories than previously thought. In particular, the $G_4$ potential is not constrained by the speed test and $G_5$ may also be present. In other words, some Galileon models that have been ruled out since the event GW170817 are, in fact, not necessarily constrained if they arise in 4D from compactifications of their higher dimensional Galileon counterparts. Besides their compelling luminality, the resulting vector Galileons are naturally $U(1)$ gauge invariant. We also argue that the Vainshtein screening that allows to recover GR predictions for solar system tests is also at work for electrodynamics in the dense region of laboratory tests., Comment: 5 pages. Abstract: We propose a new technique to generate reasonable systems of partial differential equations (PDE) that could be potential candidates for depicting models in natural sciences related to quasi-linear equations. Such systems appear within typical constructions of the Homological Algebra as complexes of differential operators describing compatibility conditions for overdetermined systems of PDE's. The related models can be both steady and evolutionary. Additional assumptions on the ellipticity of the differential complex provide a wide class of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic operators that could be generated in this way. In particular, it appears that an essentially large amount of equations related to the modern Mathematical Physics is generated by the de Rham complex of differentials on the exterior differential forms. These includes the elliptic Laplace and Lam\'e type operators; the parabolic heat transfer equation; the Euler type and Navier-Stokes type equations in Hydrodynamics; the hyperbolic wave equation and the Maxwell equations in Electrodynamics; the Klein-Gordon equation in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics; and so on. Our model generation method covers a broad class of generating systems, especially in higher spatial dimensions, due to different basic algebraic structures at play.

Abstract: We consider a general static, spherically symmetric background in the quadratic beyond Horndeski theory and analyse the behaviour of linear perturbations in both parity odd and parity even sectors. 21. ac Hall Effect and Photon Drag of Superconducting Condensate

Abstract: We suggest a theoretical description of the photogalvanic phenomena arising in superconducting condensates in the field of electromagnetic wave. The ac Hall effect and photon drag are shown to originate from the second-order nonlinear response of superconducting carriers caused by the suppression of their concentration due to the combined influence of the electron - hole asymmetry and charge imbalance generated by the incident electromagnetic wave. Starting from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory with the complex relaxation constant we develop a phenomenological description of these phenomena and investigate the resulting behavior of the dc supercurrent and second harmonic induced by microwave radiation incident on a superconductor surface., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

22. Two $\beta$-ensemble realization of $\beta$-deformed WLZZ models

Abstract: We consider a two $\beta$-ensemble realization of the series of $\beta$-deformed WLZZ matrix models. We demonstrate that such a realization involves $\beta$-deformed Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integrals, one of them providing a coupling to the external field. We also construct Ward identities in the corresponding two $\beta$-ensemble model, which requires a set of identities for partition function of the one $\beta$-ensemble in the external field, and a set of identities for the $\beta$-deformed Itzykson-Zuber integral. These both sets of identities are formulated in terms of the Dunkl operators., Comment: 18 pages

Abstract: The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements, and provide comparisons to detector simulations., Comment: 47 pages, 41 figures

24. Multiplicity of electron- and photon-seeded electromagnetic showers at multi-petawatt laser facilities

Abstract: Electromagnetic showers developing from the collision of an ultra-intense laser pulse with a beam of high-energy electrons or photons are investigated under conditions relevant to future experiments on multi-petawatt laser facilities. A semi-analytical model is derived that predicts the shower multiplicity, i.e. the number of pairs produced per incident seed particle (electron or gamma photon). The model is benchmarked against particle-in-cell simulations and shown to be accurate over a wide range of seed particle energies (100 MeV - 40 GeV), laser relativistic field strengths ($10 < a_0 < 1000$), and quantum parameter $\chi_0$ (ranging from 1 to 40). It is shown that, for experiments expected in the next decade, only the first generations of pairs contribute to the shower while multiplicities larger than unity are predicted. Guidelines for forthcoming experiments are discussed considering laser facilities such as Apollon and ELI Beamlines. 25. Growth rate of self-sustained QED cascades induced by intense lasers

Abstract: It was suggested [A. R. Bell & J. G. Kirk, PRL 101, 200403 (2008)] that an avalanche of electron-positron pairs can be triggered in the laboratory by a standing wave generated by intense laser fields. Here, we present a general solution to the long-standing problem of the avalanche growth rate calculation. We provide a simple formula that accounts for the damping of the growth rate due to pair and photon migration from the region of prolific generation. We apply our model to a variety of 3D field configurations including focused laser beams and show that i) the particle yield for the full range of intensity able to generate an avalanche can be predicted, ii) a critical intensity threshold due to migration is identified, iii) the effect of migration is negligible at a higher intensity and the local growth rate dominates. Excellent agreement with Monte Carlo and self-consistent PIC simulations is shown. The growth rate calculation allows us to predict when abundant pair production will induce a back-reaction on the generating field due to plasma collective effects and screening. Our model can be applied to study the generation of electron-positron pair avalanches in realistic fields to plan future experiments at ultra-high-intensity laser facilities., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: Doping of liquid argon TPCs (LArTPCs) with a small concentration of xenon is a technique for light-shifting and facilitates the detection of the liquid argon scintillation light. In this paper, we present the results of the first doping test ever performed in a kiloton-scale LArTPC. From February to May 2020, we carried out this special run in the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype (ProtoDUNE-SP) at CERN, featuring 720 t of total liquid argon mass with 410 t of fiducial mass. A 5.4 ppm nitrogen contamination was present during the xenon doping campaign. The goal of the run was to measure the light and charge response of the detector to the addition of xenon, up to a concentration of 18.8 ppm. The main purpose was to test the possibility for reduction of non-uniformities in light collection, caused by deployment of photon detectors only within the anode planes. Light collection was analysed as a function of the xenon concentration, by using the pre-existing photon detection system (PDS) of ProtoDUNE-SP and an additional smaller set-up installed specifically for this run. In this paper we first summarize our current understanding of the argon-xenon energy transfer process and the impact of the presence of nitrogen in argon with and without xenon dopant. We then describe the key elements of ProtoDUNE-SP and the injection method deployed. Two dedicated photon detectors were able to collect the light produced by xenon and the total light. The ratio of these components was measured to be about 0.65 as 18.8 ppm of xenon were injected. We performed studies of the collection efficiency as a function of the distance between tracks and light detectors, demonstrating enhanced uniformity of response for the anode-mounted PDS. 27. Deformation of superintegrability in the Miwa-deformed Gaussian matrix model

Abstract: We consider an arbitrary deformation of the Gaussian matrix model parameterized by Miwa variables $z_a$. One can look at it as a mixture of the Gaussian and logarithmic (Selberg) potentials, which are both superintegrable. The mixture is not, still one can find an explicit expression for an arbitrary Schur average as a linear transform of a {\it finite degree} polynomial made from the values of skew Schur functions at the Gaussian locus $p_k=\delta_{k,2}$. This linear operation includes multiplication with an exponential $ e^{z_a^2/2}$ and a kind of Borel transform of the resulting product, which we call multiple and enhanced. The existence of such remarkable formulas appears intimately related to the theory of auxiliary $K$-polynomials, which appeared in {\it bilinear} superintegrable correlators at the Gaussian point (strict superintegrability). We also consider in the very detail the generating function of correlators $<(\Tr X)^k>$ in this model, and discuss its integrable determinant representation. 28. Summing up perturbation series around superintegrable point

Abstract: We work out explicit formulas for correlators in the Gaussian matrix model perturbed by a logarithmic potential, i.e. by inserting Miwa variables. In this paper, we concentrate on the example of a single Miwa variable. The ordinary Gaussian model is superintegrable, i.e. the average of the Schur functions $S_Q$ is an explicit function of the Young diagram $Q$. The question is what happens to this property after perturbation. We show that the entire perturbation series can be nicely summed up into a kind of Borel transform of a universal exponential function, while the dependence on $R$ enters through a polynomial factor in front of this exponential. Moreover, these polynomials can be described explicitly through a single additional structure, which we call ``truncation'' of the Young diagram $Q$. It is unclear if one can call this an extended superintegrability, but at least it is a tremendously simple deformation of it. 29. Thermonuclear explosions as Type II supernovae

Abstract: We consider a binary stellar system, in which a low-mass, of 0.6 Msun, carbon-oxygen white dwarf (WD) mergers with a degenerate helium core of 0.4 Msun of a red giant. We analyse the outcome of a merger within a common envelope (CE). We predict the observational properties of the resulting transient. We find that the double detonation of the WD, being a pure thermonuclear explosion and embedded into the hydrogen-rich CE, has a light curve with the distinct plateau shape, i.e. looks like a supernova (SN) Type IIP, with a duration of about 40 days. We find five observed SNe IIP: SN 2004dy, SN 2005af, SN 2005hd, SN 2007aa, and SN 2008bu, that match the V-band light curve of our models. Hence, we show that a thermonuclear explosion within a CE might be mistakenly identified as a SN IIP, which are believed to be an outcome of a core-collapse neutrino-driven explosion of a massive star. Abstract: Many real systems exhibit the processes of growth and shrink. In this paper, we propose a network evolution model based on the simultaneous application of both node addition and deletion rules. To obtain a higher clustering that is present in real social networks, the model employs the triadic formation step at each iteration. The results show that the degree distribution in the networks generated based on this model follows a power law.

Abstract: DUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precision measurements of the PMNS matrix parameters, including the CP-violating phase. It will also stand ready to observe supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector implements liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, and combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with the sub-centimeter spatial resolution required to image those events with high precision. The addition of a photon detection system enhances physics capabilities for all DUNE physics drivers and opens prospects for further physics explorations. Given its size, the far detector will be implemented as a set of modules, with LArTPC designs that differ from one another as newer technologies arise. In the vertical drift LArTPC design, a horizontal cathode bisects the detector, creating two stacked drift volumes in which ionization charges drift towards anodes at either the top or bottom. The anodes are composed of perforated PCB layers with conductive strips, enabling reconstruction in 3D. Light-trap-style photon detection modules are placed both on the cryostat's side walls and on the central cathode where they are optically powered. Abstract: Matrix elements in different representations are connected by quadratic relations. If matrix elements are those of a $\textit{group element}$, i.e. satisfying the property $\Delta(X) = X\otimes X$, then their generating functions obey bilinear Hirota equations and hence are named $\tau$-functions. However, dealing with group elements is not always easy, especially for non-commutative algebras of functions, and this slows down the development of $\tau$-function theory and the study of integrability properties of non-perturbative functional integrals. A simple way out is to use arbitrary elements of the universal enveloping algebra, and not just the group elements. Then the Hirota equations appear to interrelate a whole system of generating functions, which one may call $\textit{generalized}$ $\tau$-functions. It was recently demonstrated that this idea can be applicable even to a somewhat sophisticated case of the quantum toroidal algebra. Abstract: It was demonstrated recently that the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra contains commutative subalgebras associated with all integer slope rays (including the vertical one). In this paper, we realize that every element of such a ray is associated with a generalized $\widetilde W$ algebra. In particular, the simplest commutative subalgebra associated with the rational Calogero Hamiltonians is associated with the $\widetilde W$ algebras studied earlier. We suggest a definition of the generalized $\widetilde W$ algebra as differential operators in variables $p_k$ basing on the matrix realization of the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra, and also suggest an unambiguous recursive definition, which, however, involves more elements of the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra than is contained in its commutative subalgebras. Abstract: We show that spin-orbit coupling at the interface between a superconducting film of the finite lateral size and the underlying ferromagnetic insulator with in-plane exchange field gives rise to a series of non-reciprocal effects provided the superconducting pairing is enhanced near the boundaries of the superconductor due to, e.g., variation of the film thickness or of the interlayer electron transparency. Specifically, the critical temperature and the critical depairing current are shown to depend on the relative orientation between the exchange field in the ferromagnet and the superconducting film boundaries. 46. Neural Potential Field for Obstacle-Aware Local Motion Planning

Abstract: Model predictive control (MPC) may provide local motion planning for mobile robotic platforms. The challenging aspect is the analytic representation of collision cost for the case when both the obstacle map and robot footprint are arbitrary. We propose a Neural Potential Field: a neural network model that returns a differentiable collision cost based on robot pose, obstacle map, and robot footprint. The differentiability of our model allows its usage within the MPC solver. It is computationally hard to solve problems with a very high number of parameters. Therefore, our architecture includes neural image encoders, which transform obstacle maps and robot footprints into embeddings, which reduce problem dimensionality by two orders of magnitude. The reference data for network training are generated based on algorithmic calculation of a signed distance function. Comparative experiments showed that the proposed approach is comparable with existing local planners: it provides trajectories with outperforming smoothness, comparable path length, and safe distance from obstacles. Experiment on Husky UGV mobile robot showed that our approach allows real-time and safe local planning. Abstract: Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) are widely used in particle detection for their tracking and calorimetric capabilities. The particle physics community actively builds and improves high-quality simulators for such detectors in order to develop physics analyses in a realistic setting. The fidelity of these simulators relative to real, measured data is limited by the modeling of the physical detectors used for data collection. This modeling can be improved by performing dedicated calibration measurements. Conventional approaches calibrate individual detector parameters or processes one at a time. However, the impact of detector processes is entangled, making this a poor description of the underlying physics. We introduce a differentiable simulator that enables a gradient-based optimization, allowing for the first time a simultaneous calibration of all detector parameters. We describe the procedure of making a differentiable simulator, highlighting the challenges of retaining the physics quality of the standard, non-differentiable version while providing meaningful gradient information. We further discuss the advantages and drawbacks of using our differentiable simulator for calibration. Finally, we provide a starting point for extensions to our approach, including applications of the differentiable simulator to physics analysis pipelines.

Abstract: The emergence of van der Waals (vdW) materials resulted in the discovery of their giant optical, mechanical, and electronic anisotropic properties, immediately enabling countless novel phenomena and applications. Such success inspired an intensive search for the highest possible anisotropic properties among vdW materials. Furthermore, the identification of the most promising among the huge family of vdW materials is a challenging quest requiring innovative approaches. Here, we suggest an easy-to-use method for such a survey based on the crystallographic geometrical perspective of vdW materials followed by their optical characterization. Using our approach, we found As2S3 as a highly anisotropic vdW material. It demonstrates rare giant in-plane optical anisotropy, high refractive index and transparency in the visible range, overcoming the century-long record set by rutile. Given these benefits, As2S3 opens a pathway towards next-generation nanophotonics as demonstrated by an ultrathin true zero-order quarter-waveplate that combines classical and the Fabry-Perot optical phase accumulations.
