The paper presents observational data of depression extent among general patients. Psychosomatic disorders are considered in the article. The authors analyzed the mental disorders incidence among different groups of somatic patients, a problem of using the various treatment techniques in these groups. Authors propose the treatment of depression observed among general patients; it is based on literature data and their own observations.

Different views are presented on the issue of delivering psychiatric services under present-day conditions. The necessity is substantiated to develop medical and social services to be provided to mental patients. The author submits data on the prevalence of mental disturbances, degree of disability, efficiency of biologic methods of therapy. Described in the paper are problems of organization of psychiatric services intended for patients with affective disorders, with objectives and tasks of medical and social rehabilitative services on a town/city scale being substantiated.

Based on the study of 228 depressive patients presenting with various nosological entities of the disorder a detailed clinical and psychopathological characterization was done of depressive disorders. The authors makes out five clinical variants related to features of the pathological process and principal clinical manifestations of the disorder in question. The role of different social and psychological factors in genesis of present-day depression is analyzed.

A total of 200 persons victims of the Chernobyl accident presenting with different exogenous organic depressions were examined. Radiation exposure did not exceed medium levels. The pattern of depressive syndrome of exogenous organic genesis was studied as was the incidence of its varieties. The article contains a description of different varieties of depression and sums up studies on premorbid and neurological status and additional research methods together with studies on suicidal intentions and disposition to alcoholization in the studied groups.

Patterns of mental disturbances were studied in suicides as were features of their depressive states. There were 67 patients examined in a clinical setting in the time course of their mental state; besides, 112 outpatient medical records were analyzed by modes common in catamnestic methodology. Data are submitted on the incidence of attempted suicide together with that of completed suicide in each nosological group. Clinical features of mental state in depressed suicide-minded patients are described.
