The study aimed to explore whether neurophysiological measures of auditory processing in preschoolers can predict Chinese reading after going to school. Mismatch responses (MMRs) to auditory frequency, duration, and temporal pattern deviants were examined in 24 Chinese preschoolers (6.59 ± 0.25 years old). Reading abilities were tracked in Grades 2 (8.09 ± 0.29 years old) and 4 (9.65 ± 0.28 years old). We found that temporal pattern MMRs in preschoolers continuously contributed to Chinese reading fluency in Grades 2 and 4. However, MMRs to frequency or duration deviants did not predict their reading abilities in Grades 2 or 4. These findings suggest that MMRs of basic auditory temporal processing in preliterate children can serve as predictive biomarkers for future Chinese reading acquisition, thus holding promise for identifying Chinese children at risk of dyslexia before formal school education and further guiding early intervention to support their reading development. Adaptation refers to the decreased neural response that occurs after repeated exposure to a stimulus. While many electroencephalogram (EEG) studies have investigated adaptation by using either single or multiple repetitions, the adaptation patterns under controlled expectations manifested in the two main auditory components, N1 and P2, are still largely unknown. Additionally, although multiple repetitions are commonly used in mismatch negativity (MMN) experiments, it is unclear how adaptation at different time windows contributes to this phenomenon. In this study, we conducted an EEG experiment with 37 healthy adults using a random stimulus arrangement and extended tone sequences to control expectations. We tracked the amplitudes of the N1 and P2 components across the first 10 tones to examine adaptation patterns. Our findings revealed an L‐shaped adaptation pattern characterised by a significant decrease in N1 amplitude after the first repetition (N1 initial adaptation), followed by a continuous, linear increase in P2 amplitude after the first repetition (P2 subsequent adaptation), possibly indicating model adjustment. Regression analysis demonstrated that the peak amplitudes of both the N1 initial adaptation and the P2 subsequent adaptation significantly accounted for variance in MMN amplitude. These results suggest distinct adaptation patterns for multiple repetitions across different components and indicate that the MMN reflects a combination of two processes: the initial adaptation in the N1 and a continuous model adjustment effect in the P2. The cortical generators of the pure tone MMN and P300 have been thoroughly studied. Their nature and interaction with respect to phoneme perception, however, is poorly understood. Accordingly, the cortical sources and functional connections that underlie the MMN and P300 in relation to passive and active speech sound perception were identified. An inattentive and attentive phonemic oddball paradigm, eliciting a MMN and P300 respectively, were administered in 60 healthy adults during simultaneous high-density EEG recording. For both the MMN and P300, eLORETA source reconstruction was performed. The maximal cross-correlation was calculated between ROI-pairs to investigate inter-regional functional connectivity specific to passive and active deviant processing. MMN activation clusters were identified in the temporal (insula, superior temporal gyrus and temporal pole), frontal (rostral middle frontal and pars opercularis) and parietal (postcentral and supramarginal gyrus) cortex. Passive discrimination of deviant phonemes was aided by a network connecting right temporoparietal cortices to left frontal areas. For the P300, clusters with significantly higher activity were found in the frontal (caudal middle frontal and precentral), parietal (precuneus) and cingulate (posterior and isthmus) cortex. Significant intra- and interhemispheric connections between parietal, cingulate and occipital regions constituted the network governing active phonemic target detection. A predominantly bilateral network was found to underly both the MMN and P300. While passive phoneme discrimination is aided by a fronto-temporo-parietal network, active categorization calls on a network entailing fronto-parieto-cingulate cortices. In this study, we examined whether the MMN response is sensitive to the differences between L1, L2 and L3/Ln. Methods: We compared bioelectrical brain activity in response to changes in pairs of vowels produced in three different languages. Specifically, multilingual participants listened to selected vowel contrasts in their L1 Polish, L2 English and L3/Ln Norwegian presented within the passive-oddball paradigm. Results: Results revealed that the MMN was modulated by language: we observed significant differences between L2 English and L3/Ln Norwegian as well as between L1 Polish and L3/Ln Norwegian. For L3/Ln Norwegian, the MMN response had a lower amplitude when compared with L2 English and L1 Polish. Objective: To investigate whether alterations in the functional connectivity of networks underlying phoneme perception and semantic-categorical processing persist in adulthood following childhood acquired brain injury (cABI). Methods: EEG was recorded in seven adults with a cABI and seven matched controls during the administration of an inattentive and attentive phoneme-level oddball task and a categorical priming task. Functional connections underlying the mismatch negativity (MMN), P300 and N400 were compared between participant groups in five frequency bands by calculating the weighted phase lag index between 32 × 32 electrode pairs. Network modularity and path length were compared between the cABI and control group. Results: We observed a positive network for MMN deviant processing in the low gamma band and N400 related processing in the alpha band, but a negative network for P300 standard processing in the theta band in cABI compared to control adults. No differences in graph measures of functional networks were observed between participant groups. Conclusions: Alterations in the functional connectivity of speech perception and semantic-categorical processing networks persist in adulthood following cABI. Background: Although impaired auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) has consistently been found in individuals with schizophrenia, there are few and inconsistent reports on nonclinical individuals with schizotypy. To date, no studies have thoroughly assessed MMN with different degrees of deviant oddballs in nonclinical schizotypal samples. The aim of this study was to examine the extent of duration MMN (dMMN) amplitudes under two deviant duration conditions (large and small) in nonclinical participants with high schizotypal traits. Methods: An extreme-group design was utilized, in which 63 participants from the schizotypy and control groups were selected from a pool of 1519 young adults using the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ). MMN was measured using passive duration oddball paradigms. Basic demographic information and musical backgrounds were assessed and matched, while depression and anxiety were evaluated and controlled for. The repeated measures analysis of covariance was utilized to evaluate differences in dMMN between groups. The Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons. Partial correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to investigate the association between dMMN amplitudes and SPQ scores. Results: The amplitudes of dMMN at Cz were significantly increased under the large deviance condition in nonclinical schizotypal individuals (F = 4.36, p = .04). Large-deviance dMMN amplitudes at Fz were positively correlated with mild cognitive-perceptual symptoms in the control group (rp = .42, p = .03). However, as schizophrenia-like symptoms worsened and approached the clinical threshold for schizophrenia, small-deviance dMMN amplitudes at Cz showed negative associations with the cognitive-perceptual factor in the schizotypy group (rp = -.40, p = .04). Conclusion: These results suggest the importance of considering the degree of deviation in duration when implementing the auditory oddball paradigm among nonclinical participants with schizotypal traits. Background and Aims: Glioma growth in eloquent language areas induces adaptive activation changes in the language network. The present study aimed to (1) investigate the pre- to postoperative evolution of neural phoneme perception processes in glioma patients and (2) assess if event-related potentials (ERPs) reflecting phoneme perception can provide added value to the diagnostic approach in individuals undergoing awake surgery. Methods and Procedures: In five persons undergoing an awake craniotomy for the resection of a glioma, pre- and postoperative behavioural language assessment (Aachen Aphasia Test, Comprehensive Aphasia Test and Boston Naming Test) and electrophysiological investigation of phoneme perception was performed. For the latter, ERPs were obtained through the administration of an inattentive (Mismatch Negativity; MMN) and attentive (P300) oddball paradigm containing a phonemic articulation place contrast during EEG recording. Outcomes and Results: Aberrant phoneme categorization processing was evidenced in all five participants preoperatively based on the MMN and P300 amplitude and latency. Moreover, mild behavioural impairments were found in four participants at this time. Postoperatively, three out of five participants reached behavioural ceiling effects, while four individuals displayed normalization of electrophysiological measures. Conclusions: While neural processing of phoneme contrasts was preoperatively affected by glioma-induced disturbances, a high potential for postsurgical plasticity was shown. As four participants presented with a high grade glioma, tumour grade might partially account for this pattern. Addition of electrophysiological tests to the language assessment could provide benefits in both the preand postoperative clinical diagnostic approach in glioma patients. • A larger positive mismatch response (P-MMR) at birth is associated with better development of prereading skills. • A more mature pattern of neural auditory speech discrimination is associated with a better development of pre-reading skills. • Familial dyslexia risk affects the development of pre-reading skills and their associations with MMRs. We investigated how infant mismatch responses (MMRs), which have the potential for providing information on auditory discrimination abilities, could predict subsequent development of pre-reading skills and the risk for familial dyslexia. We recorded MMRs to vowel, duration, and frequency deviants in pseudo-words at birth and 28 months in a sample over-represented by infants with dyslexia risk. We examined MMRs' associations with pre-reading skills at 28 months and 4–5 years and compared the results in subgroups with vs. without dyslexia risk. Larger positive MMR (P-MMR) at birth was found to be associated with better serial naming. In addition, increased mismatch negativity (MMN) and late discriminative negativity (LDN), and decreased P-MMR at 28 months overall, were shown to be related to better pre-reading skills. The associations were influenced by dyslexia risk, which was also linked to poor pre-reading skills. Infant MMRs, providing information about the maturity of the auditory system, are associated with the development of pre-reading skills. Speech-processing deficits may contribute to deficits in language acquisition observed in dyslexia. Infant MMRs could work as predictive markers of atypical linguistic development during early childhood. This study adopts a cross-linguistic perspective and investigates how musical expertise affects the perception of duration and pitch in language. Native speakers of Chinese (N = 44) and Estonian (N = 46), each group subdivided into musicians and non-musicians, participated in a mismatch negativity (MMN) experiment where they passively listened to both Chinese and Estonian stimuli, followed by a behavioral experiment where they attentively discriminated the stimuli in the non-native language (i.e., Chinese to Estonian participants and Estonian to Chinese participants). In both experiments, stimuli of duration change, pitch change, and duration plus pitch change were discriminated. We found higher behavioral sensitivity among Chinese musicians than non-musicians in perceiving the duration change in Estonian and higher behavioral sensitivity among Estonian musicians than non-musicians in perceiving all types of changes in Chinese, but no corresponding effect was found in the MMN results, which suggests a more salient effect of musical expertise on foreign language processing when attention is required. Secondly, Chinese musicians did not outperform non-musicians in attentively discriminating the pitch-related stimuli in Estonian, suggesting that musical expertise can be overridden by tonal language experience when perceiving foreign linguistic pitch, especially when an attentive discrimination task is administered. Thirdly, we found larger MMN among Chinese and Estonian musicians than their non-musician counterparts in perceiving the largest deviant (i.e., duration plus pitch) in their native language. Taken together, our results demonstrate a positive effect of musical expertise on language processing.

Background: Cohort studies have shown that older adults with hearing impairment as assessed by self-report or behavioral measures are at higher risk of developing dementia many years later. A fine-grained examination of auditory processing holds promise for more effective screening of older adults at risk of cognitive decline. The auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) measure enables one to gain insights into the neurobiological substrate of central auditory processing. We hypothesized that older adults showing compromised indexes of MMN at baseline would exhibit cognitive decline at the one-year follow-up. Methods: We performed cognitive evaluations with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS; Form A and Form B) in 108 community-dwelling older adults and acquired EEG via the classic passive auditory oddball paradigm at baseline and 12-month follow-up. Results: The results showed that young-old adults with future cognitive decline showed a decrease in MMN peak amplitude, accompanied by a forward-shifting latency, whereas in older adults it showed a delay in MMN latency, and unchanged MMN peak amplitude at midline electrodes (Fz, FCz and Cz). Furthermore, the peak amplitude of the MMN decreases with age in older adults aged 70-80 years rather than 60-70 years or > 80 years. Conclusion: The altered MMN model exists in different aging stages and it's a promising electrophysiological predictor of cognitive decline in older adults. Background: Mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude is reduced in psychotic disorders and associated with symptoms and functioning. Due to these robust associations, it is often considered a biomarker for psychotic illness. The relationship between MMN and clinical outcomes has been examined well in early onset psychotic illness; however, its stability and predictive utility in chronic samples are not clear. Method: We examined the five-year stability of MMN amplitude over two timepoints in individuals with established psychotic disorders (cases; N = 132) and never-psychotic participants (NP; N = 170), as well as longitudinal associations with clinical symptoms and functioning. Results: MMN amplitude exhibited good temporal stability (cases, r = 0.53; never-psychotic, r = 0.52). In cases, structural equation models revealed MMN amplitude to be a significant predictor of worsening auditory hallucinations (β = 0.19), everyday functioning (β = −0.13), and illness severity (β = −0.12) at follow-up. Meanwhile, initial IQ (β = −0.24), negative symptoms (β = 0.23), and illness severity (β = −0.16) were significant predictors of worsening MMN amplitude five years later. Conclusions: These results imply that MMN measures a neural deficit that is reasonably stable up to five years. Results support disordered cognition and negative symptoms as preceding reduced MMN, which then may operate as a mechanism driving reductions in everyday functioning and the worsening of auditory hallucinations in chronic psychotic disorders. This pattern may inform models of illness course, clarifying the relationships amongst biological mechanisms of predictive processing and clinical deficits in chronic psychosis and allowing us to better understand the mechanisms driving such impairments over time. Word stress is demanding for non-native learners of English, partly because speakers from different backgrounds weight perceptual cues to stress like pitch, intensity, and duration differently. Slavic learners of English and particularly those with a fixed stress language background like Czech and Polish have been shown to be less sensitive to stress in their native and non-native languages. In contrast, German English learners are rarely discussed in a word stress context. A comparison of these varieties can reveal differences in the foreign language processing of speakers from two language families. We use electroencephalography (EEG) to explore group differences in word stress cue perception between Slavic and German learners of English. Slavic and German advanced English speakers were examined in passive multi-feature oddball experiments, where they were exposed to the word impact as an unstressed standard and as deviants stressed on the first or second syllable through higher pitch, intensity, or duration. The results revealed a robust Mismatch Negativity (MMN) component of the eventrelated potential (ERP) in both language groups in response to all conditions, demonstrating sensitivity to stress changes in a non-native language. While both groups showed higher MMN responses to stress changes to the second than the first syllable, this effect was more pronounced for German than for Slavic participants. Such group differences in non-native English word stress perception from the current and previous studies are argued to speak in favor of customizable language technologies and diversified English curricula compensating for nonnative perceptual variation. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common neurological diseases in North America and it is frequently associated with sensory processing difficulties, cognitive deficits, and psychiatric illness. While many studies have examined cognitive deficits in MS measured by behavioural responses and neuroimaging techniques, only a few studies have examined neurophysiological measures of auditory functioning in MS, such as the mismatch negativity (MMN). The MMN is an event-related potential that indicates automatic auditory change detection. This study examined whether MMN endpoints measured by electroencephalography (EEG) differ in individuals with relapsing–remitting MS compared to healthy controls and whether the symptomatology of MS, including symptoms of depression and fatigue, are related to MMN measures. A multi-feature MMN paradigm, which includes five distinct deviant tones, was used to assess auditory cortex function in MS. There were no significant differences in MMN amplitudes or latencies between the MS and control group (p < 0.05) and corresponding effect sizes were small. However, there was a correlation between reduced MMN amplitudes in response to an intensity deviant and physician-reported disability. The intensity MMN may be more sensitive to deterioration in this population. Ultimately, this study provides a comprehensive profile of early auditory processing abilities in MS and suggests that a reduction in the MMN response may be representative of disease severity in MS. Abstract The brain potential known as mismatch negativity (MMN) is one of the most studied indices of altered brain function in schizophrenia. This review looks at what has been learned about MMN in schizophrenia over the last three decades and why the level of interest and activity in this field of research remains strong. A diligent consideration of available evidence suggests that MMN can serve as a biomarker in schizophrenia, but perhaps not the kind of biomarker that early research supposed. This review concludes that MMN measurement is likely to be most useful as a monitoring and response biomarker enabling tracking of an underlying pathology and efficacy of interventions, respectively. The role of, and challenges presented by, pre‐clinical models is discussed as well as the merits of different methodologies that can be brought to bear in pursuing a deeper understanding of pathophysiology that might explain smaller MMN in schizophrenia.

Background: Predicting the consciousness recovery for comatose patients with acute brain injury is an important issue. Although some efforts have been made in the study of prognostic assessment methods, it is still unclear which factors can be used to establish model to directly predict the probability of consciousness recovery. Objectives: We aimed to establish a model using clinical and neuroelectrophysiological indicators to predict consciousness recovery of comatose patients after acute brain injury. Methods: The clinical data of patients with acute brain injury admitted to the neurosurgical intensive care unit of Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from May 2019 to May 2022, who underwent electroencephalogram (EEG) and auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) examinations within 28 days after coma onset, were collected. The prognosis was assessed by Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at 3 months after coma onset. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was applied to select the most relevant predictors. We combined Glasgow coma scale (GCS), EEG, and absolute amplitude of MMN at Fz to develop a predictive model using binary logistic regression and then presented by a nomogram. The predictive efficiency of the model was evaluated with AUC and verified by calibration curve. The decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate the clinical utility of the prediction model. Results: A total of 116 patients were enrolled for analysis, of which 60 had favorable prognosis (GOS ὅ 3). Five predictors, including GCS (OR = 13.400, P < 0.001), absolute amplitude of MMN at Fz site (FzMMNA, OR = 1.855, P = 0.038), EEG background activity (OR = 4.309, P = 0.023), EEG reactivity (OR = 4.154, P = 0.030), and sleep spindles (OR = 4.316, P = 0.031), were selected in the model by LASSO and binary logistic regression analysis. This model showed favorable predictive power, with an AUC of 0.939 (95% CI: 0.899-0.979), and calibration. The threshold probability of net benefit was between 5% and 92% in the DCA. Conclusion: This predictive model for consciousness recovery in patients with acute brain injury is based on a nomogram incorporating GCS, EEG background activity, EEG reactivity, sleep spindles, and FzMMNA, which can be conveniently obtained during hospitalization. The speaker's identity (who the speaker is) and linguistic information (what the speaker is saying) are essential to daily communication. However, it is unclear whether and how listeners process the two types of information differently in speech perception. The present study adopted a passive oddball paradigm to compare the identity and linguistic information processing concerning neural resource involvements and hemispheric lateralization patterns. We used two female native Mandarin speakers' real and pseudo-Mandarin words to differentiate the identity from linguistic (phonological and lexical) information. The results showed that, in real words, the phonological-lexical variation elicited larger MMN amplitudes than the identity variation. In contrast, there were no significant MMN amplitude differences between the identity and phonological variation in pseudo words. Regardless of real or pseudo words, the identity and linguistic variation did not elicit MMN amplitudes differences between the left and right hemispheres. Taken together, findings from the present study indicated that the identity information recruited similar neural resources to the phonological information but different neural resources from the lexical information. However, the identity and linguistic information processing did not show a particular hemispheric lateralization pattern at an early pre-attentive speech perception stage. This study investigated effective connectivity within and between the auditory regions during auditory odd-ball deviance tasks. The analyses were performed on two magnetoencephalography (MEG) datasets: one on duration MMN in a cohort with various diagnoses within the psychosis spectrum and neurotypical controls, and one on duration and pitch MMN in first-episode psychosis patients and matched neurotypical controls. We applied spectral Granger causality to MEG source-reconstructed signals to compute effective connectivity within and between the left and right auditory regions. Both experiments showed that duration-deviance detection was associated with early increases of effective connectivity in the beta band followed by increases in the alpha and theta bands, with the connectivity strength linked to the laterality of the MMN amplitude. Compared to controls, people with psychosis had overall smaller effective connectivity, particularly from left to right auditory regions, in the pathway where bilateral information converges toward lateralized processing, often rightward. Blunted MMN in psychosis might reflect a deficit in inter-hemispheric communication between auditory regions, highlighting a "dysconnection" already at preattentive stages of stimulus processing as a model system of widespread pathophysiology. • Reliability of the 5-stimulus version of mismatch negativity (MMN) was tested in healthy subjects. • MMN is primarily an area of interest for audiology, but it also has a place in multidisciplinary studies. • This innovative research effort was undertaken to identify a reliable short time of MMN recordings by comparing results obtained with ten and four MMN recordings. The aim of the study was to conduct multi-feature mismatch negativity (MMN) implementations and identify via a test–retest study the reliability of MMN responses obtained through a 5-stimulus version of the MMN paradigm. It was also aimed to identify a reliable MMN recording number by comparing the MMN responses obtained under conditions of ten and four recordings conditions while making the recording time shorter. Twenty-one healthy volunteers, aged between 18 and 36 years, were included in the study. A 5-stimulus version of the multi-feature MMN paradigm was presented to participants. Ten recordings were obtained for each participant under both test and retest conditions. The MATLAB program was utilized in the evaluation of MMN amplitude and latency. The Fz was chosen for the statistical analysis. Four of the ten recordings were chosen at random, and statistical analyses were performed again for those four recordings. There was no statistically significant difference in amplitudes obtained from test and retest conditions with ten recordings. With four recordings, for frequency, intensity, duration, and gap deviants, there were no statistically significant differences between amplitudes obtained under test and retest conditions. However, there was a statistically significant difference between amplitudes of the location deviant. No statistically significant difference was observed among latencies under test–retest conditions with both ten and four recordings. These findings demonstrate that MMN amplitudes could be used reliably as short-time evaluations with four recordings, but more recordings are required for MMN latencies. In terms of practicality, four recordings are more advantageous and comfortable for both clinicians and patients in MMN practice. When behavioral tests are required, MMN is regarded as an objective test that can be used reliably for adults, children, and infants who cannot be evaluated using behavioral methods. Mismatch negativity (MMN) has gained attention as a biomarker for psychosis and a translational intermediate phenotype in animal models of psychosis, including rodents and non-human primates. MMN has been linked to global functioning (Global Assessment of Functioning [GAF] score) and prognosis (psychosis onset or remission), suggesting that MMN reflects activities beyond auditory processing alone. This review examines the 45-year history of MMN from the perspective of psychiatric researchers and discusses current advances in computational and translational research on MMN, summarizing the current understanding of the MMN generation mechanism. We then address the essential question, "What do we observe through MMN?" Currently, we regard the relationship between global functioning in the real world and MMN as the key to answering this question. As a preliminary investigation, we analyzed the relationship between GAF as an objective variable and MMN, diagnosis, and basic epidemiological factors (age, sex, premorbid intelligence quotient) as explanatory variables (total n = 201, healthy controls: n = 41, patients with psychiatric disorders: n = 160) without assuming diagnostic categories. The relationship between functional outcomes and MMN was confirmed without a case-control design. Finally, we propose that new neurophysiological studies should acknowledge psychophysiological responses such as emotion, intention, and autonomic responses, as well as behavioral differences among participants beyond the dichotomy between healthy controls and patients. Measurements could be conducted in various settings from the participant's perspective. An early component of the auditory event-related potential (ERP), the mismatch negativity (MMN), has been shown to be sensitive to native phonemic sound contrasts. The potential changes to this neural sensitivity from foreign language learning have only been marginally studied. The existing research seems to suggest that the neural sensitivity as indexed by the MMN can adapt to foreign language sound contrasts with very target-specific training, but whether the effects are long-lasting or generalize to proper foreign language learning is yet to be investigated in a viable longitudinal study design. We therefore recorded electroencephalography (EEG) from two groups of language officer cadets (learning either Arabic (n = 8) or Dari (n = 12)) while they listened to speech sound contrasts from both languages. We recorded their EEG four times over the course of 19 months of intensive foreign language training (immediately before they started, after three weeks, after six months, and after 19 months).We did not find any language-specific effects of learning on the cadets’ MMNs to the speech sound contrasts. We did, however, elicit statistically reliable MMNs to both sound contrasts for both groups at most of the four times of measurement. Furthermore, we found that the Arabic learners’ MMNs to the Arabic stimuli diminished over time, and that the Dari learners’ P3a responses to the Arabic stimuli diminished over time. Correlating the participants’ MMNs with their behavioral responses to the language stimuli did not reveal any strong links between behavior and neurophysiology. However, those Dari learners whose MMNs to the Dari stimuli increased the most within the first three weeks, also received the highest grades on a listening task after 17 weeks.

ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to investigate speech processing development in children with normal hearing (NH) and cochlear implants (CI) groups using a multifeature event-related potential (ERP) paradigm. Singing is associated to enhanced attention and speech perception. Therefore, its connection to ERPs was investigated in the CI group.MethodsThe paradigm included five change types in a pseudoword: two easy- (duration, gap) and three difficult-to-detect (vowel, pitch, intensity) with CIs. The positive mismatch responses (pMMR), mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a and late differentiating negativity (LDN) responses of preschoolers (below 6 years 9 months) and schoolchildren (above 6 years 9 months) with NH or CIs at two time points (T1, T2) were investigated with Linear Mixed Modeling (LMM). For the CI group, the association of singing at home and ERP development was modeled with LMM.ResultsOverall, responses elicited by the easy- and difficult to detect changes differed between the CI and NH groups. Compared to the NH group, the CI group had smaller MMNs to vowel duration changes and gaps, larger P3a responses to gaps, and larger pMMRs and smaller LDNs to vowel identity changes. Preschoolers had smaller P3a responses and larger LDNs to gaps, and larger pMMRs to vowel identity changes than schoolchildren. In addition, the pMMRs to gaps increased from T1 to T2 in preschoolers. More parental singing in the CI group was associated with increasing pMMR and less parental singing with decreasing P3a amplitudes from T1 to T2.ConclusionThe multifeature paradigm is suitable for assessing cortical speech processing development in children. In children with CIs, cortical discrimination is often reflected in pMMR and P3a responses, and in MMN and LDN responses in children with NH. Moreover, the cortical speech discrimination of children with CIs develops late, and over time and age, their speech sound change processing changes as does the processing of children with NH. Importantly, multisensory activities such as parental singing can lead to improvement in the discrimination and attention shifting toward speech changes in children with CIs. These novel results should be taken into account in future research and rehabilitation.

The recent finding of predictive brain signals preceding anticipated perceptual and linguistic stimuli opens new questions for experimental research. Here, we address the possible brain basis of phonological predictions regarding the features of specific speech sounds and their relationship to phonological priming. To this end, we recorded EEG correlates of both pre- and post-stimulus brain responses in a phonological priming study. Redundant spoken sounds induced stimulus expectations, which manifested as a slow-wave anticipatory activity (the Prediction Potential, PP), whereas articulatory-congruent (e.g.,/bƏ/in the context of expected/pƏ/) pairs elicited weaker post-stimulus MMN-like responses as compared to the articulatory-incongruent (e.g.,/bƏ/in the context of expected/dƏ/) pairs, a pattern reminiscent of perceptual priming mediated by articulatory-motor areas. Source analysis reveal clusters of activation in lateral prefrontal, temporal and ventral motor areas, thus providing the proof of the relevance of multimodal representation units subserving predictive and perceptual phonemic processing. The human brain is highly responsive to (deviant) sounds violating an auditory regularity. Respective brain responses are usually investigated in situations when the sounds were produced by the experimenter. Acknowledging that humans also actively produce sounds, the present event-related potential study tested for differences in the brain responses to deviants that were produced by the listeners by pressing one of two buttons. In one condition, deviants were unpredictable with respect to the button-sound association. In another condition, deviants were predictable with high validity yielding correctly predicted deviants and incorrectly predicted (mispredicted) deviants. Temporal principal component analysis revealed deviant-specific N1 enhancement, mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a. N1 enhancements were highly similar for each deviant type, indicating that the underlying neural mechanism is not affected by intention-based expectation about the self-produced forthcoming sound. The MMN was abolished for predictable deviants, suggesting that the intention-based prediction for a deviant can overwrite the prediction derived from the auditory regularity (predicting a standard). The P3a was present for each deviant type but was largest for mispredicted deviants. It is argued that the processes underlying P3a not only evaluate the deviant with respect to the fact that it violates an auditory regularity but also with respect to the intended sensorial effect of an action. Overall, our results specify current theories of auditory predictive processing, as they reveal that intention-based predictions exert different effects on different deviance-specific brain responses. Sound localization in the front-back dimension is reported to be challenging, with individual differences. We investigated whether auditory discrimination processing in the brain differs based on front-back sound localization ability. This study conducted an auditory oddball task using speakers in front of and behind the participants. We used event-related brain potentials to examine the deviance detection process between groups that could and could not discriminate front-back sound localization. The results indicated that mismatch negativity (MMN) occurred during the deviance detection process, and P2 amplitude differed between standard and deviant locations in both groups. However, the latency of MMN was shorter in the group that could discriminate front-back sounds than in the group that could not. Additionally, N1 amplitude increased for deviant locations compared to standard ones only in the discriminating group. In conclusion, the sensory memories matching process based on traces of previously presented stimuli (MMN, P2) occurred regardless of discrimination ability. However, the response to changes in the physical properties of sounds (MMN latency, N1 amplitude) differed depending on the ability to discriminate front-back sounds. Chinese participants perceived duration in Estonian as meaningless acoustic information due to a lack of phonological use of duration in their native language; however, they demonstrated a better pitch discrimination ability than Estonian participants. On the other hand, Estonian participants outperformed Chinese participants in perceiving the non-speech pure tones that resembled the Estonian quantity (i.e., containing both duration and pitch information). Current ERP extraction systems are expensive, complex, and bulky. This study aims to overcome these limitations by developing and validating a bimodal auditory ERP extractor headband. An affordable, portable bimodal auditory ERP extractor was developed and validated for ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) and MMN (Mismatch Negativity) response interpretation. Auditory stimuli were created using Presentation software. Adaptive filtering-based extraction was performed in EEGLAB (MATLAB) to derive the neural inferences. Extracted responses from n = 5 young adults were validated against CE-certified acquisition systems used in clinical practice. Validation results showed the grand average responses of ABR and MMN for n = 5 subjects matched. Furthermore, with and without stimuli ERP analysis showed significant differences for identified features (p = 0.00794 for ABR wave-V amplitudes, p = 1.22 * 10−5, and p = 2.62 * 10−5 for MMN peak latencies and area under the curves), ensuring that the response was due to the presented auditory stimuli. The results confirm the competency of the developed system to obtain MMN and ABR from young adults. A clear contrast between latency-amplitude scatter plots further ensures the competency of a developed system to acquire ABR and MMN. The novelty of the study is an easy-to-operate, affordable ERP extractor with adaptive filtering, wearable design, and configurable stimuli. Objective: Automatic detection of auditory stimuli, represented by the mismatch negativity (MMN), facilitates rapid processing of salient stimuli in the environment. The amplitude of MMN declines with ageing. However, whether automatic detection of auditory stimuli is affected by visually perceived negative emotions with normal ageing remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate how fearful facial expressions affect the MMN amplitude under ageing. Methods: We used a modified oddball paradigm to analyze the amplitude of N100 (N1) and MMN in 22 young adults and 21 middle-aged adults. Results: We found that the amplitude of N1 elicited by standard tones was smaller under fearful facial expressions than neutral facial expressions and was more negative for young adults than middle-aged adults. The MMN amplitude under fearful facial expressions was greater than neutral facial expressions, but the amplitude in middle-aged adults was smaller than in young adults. Conclusion: Visually perceived negative emotion promotes the extraction of auditory features. Additionally, it enhances the effect of auditory change detection in middle-aged adults but fails to compensate for this decline with normal ageing. Aims: The present study investigated whether bilinguals differing in L2 proficiency are different in their non-native phonetic perception mechanism. Methodology: An event-related potential (ERP) experiment was conducted, in which high and low L2 proficiency bilinguals were asked to focus their attention on a muted film while listening pre-attentively to phoneme contrasts arranged in the Oddball paradigm. Non-native and native phonetic conditions were investigated in two separate blocks. Data and analysis: The mean amplitudes of the ERP epochs time-locked to the onset of phonemes were analyzed within four consecutive time windows: 50–150 ms, 150–250 ms, 250–350 ms, and 350–600 ms. Repeated measures analyses were performed on the following factors: phonetic condition (non-native vs. native) × deviancy (standard vs. deviant) × brain region (frontal vs. parietal) × proficiency (high vs. low). Phonetic condition, deviancy, and brain region were within-subjects factors, whereas proficiency was a between-subjects factor. Findings: In the non-native phonetic condition, a deviancy effect in the form of mismatch negativity (MMN) and late discriminative negativity (LDN) ERP components was observed in bilinguals with high L2 proficiency, whereas the P3b and late positive component (LPC) were found in those with low L2 proficiency. In the native phonetic condition, the two proficiency groups were the same in the deviancy effect as manifested by their similar brain responses in the form of the MMN component. Originality: This was the first study to take native phonetic condition into consideration while investigating the relationship between L2 proficiency and non-native phonetic discrimination. Significance/implications: The current findings suggest that high L2 proficiency might be related to faster involuntary phonetic discrimination and efficient high-level phonetic evaluation, whereas low L2 proficiency bilinguals may need to rely on additional memory processing. TAAR1 is known as a neuromodulator of monoaminergic systems, providing the negative regulation of dopaminergic and serotonergic neuronal activity. The TAAR1 ability to regulate monoaminergic systems determines its prominent role in psychiatric and neurological disorders. The present study is aimed to provide further evidence for the role of TAAR1 in mismatch negativity (MMN) generation. The electroencephalogram was recorded in freely moving TAAR1 knockout and wild type mice. As the MMN response reflects a combination of stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) and deviance detection (DD) response, we compare standard and deviant stimuli to the multi-standard control. The difference observed between the high-adapted standard and low-adapted control stimuli together with the similar response to deviant and control stimuli suggest that the MMN-like response in wild type mice most likely reflects the SSA. On the other hand, TAAR1 knockout mice show no difference between standard, deviant, and control stimuli, probably indicating that the SSA to repetitive stimuli is impaired in TAAR-KO mice. We recorded MMRs to vowel, duration, and frequency deviants in pseudo-words at 0, 6, and 28 months and compared MMRs in subgroups with vs. without dyslexia risk, in a sample over-represented by risk infants. Neonatal MMN to the duration deviant became larger and earlier by 28 months; MMN was elicited by more deviants only at 28 months. The P-MMR was predominant in infancy; its amplitude increased by 6 and decreased by 28 months; latency decreased with increasing age. An LDN emerged by 6 months and became larger and later by 28 months. Dyslexia risk affected MMRs and their maturation. MMRs demonstrate an expected maturational pattern with 2–3 peaks by 28 months. The effects of dyslexia risk are prominent but not always as expected. This large-scale longitudinal study shows MMR maturation with three age groups and three deviants. Results illuminate MMR's relation to the adult responses, and hence their cognitive underpinnings, and help in identifying typical/atypical auditory development in early childhood. Rationale: Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a candidate endophenotype for schizophrenia subserved by N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) function and there is increasing evidence that prolonged cannabis use adversely affects MMN generation. Few human studies have investigated the acute effects of cannabinoids on brain-based biomarkers of NMDAR function and synaptic plasticity. Objectives: The current study investigated the acute effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) alone and in combination on the mismatch negativity (MMN). Methods: In a randomised, double-blind, crossover placebo-controlled study, 18 frequent and 18 less-frequent cannabis users underwent 5 randomised drug sessions administered via vaporiser: (1) placebo; (2) THC 8 mg; (3) CBD 400 mg; (4) THC 8 mg + CBD 4 mg [THC + CBDlow]; (5) THC 12 mg + CBD 400 mg [THC + CBDhigh]. Participants completed a multifeature MMN auditory oddball paradigm with duration, frequency and intensity deviants (6% each). Results: Relative to placebo, both THC and CBD were observed to increase duration and intensity MMN amplitude in less-frequent users, and THC also increased frequency MMN in this group. The addition of low-dose CBD added to THC attenuated the effect of THC on duration and intensity MMN amplitude in less-frequent users. The same pattern of effects was observed following high-dose CBD added to THC on duration and frequency MMN in frequent users. Conclusions: The pattern of effects following CBD combined with THC on MMN may be subserved by different underlying neurobiological interactions within the endocannabinoid system that vary as a function of prior cannabis exposure. These results highlight the complex interplay between the acute effects of exogenous cannabinoids and NMDAR function. Sensory prediction is considered an important element of mismatch negativity (MMN) whose reduction is well known in patients with schizophrenia. Omission MMN is a variant of the MMN which is elicited by the absence of a tone previously sequentially presented. Omission MMN can eliminate the effects of sound differences in typical oddball paradigms and affords the opportunity to identify prediction-related signals in the brain. Auditory predictions are thought to reflect bottom-up and top-down processing within hierarchically organized auditory areas. However, the communications between the various subregions of the auditory cortex and the prefrontal cortex that generate and communicate sensory prediction-related signals remain poorly understood. To explore how the frontal and temporal cortices communicate for the generation and propagation of such signals, we investigated the response in the omission paradigm using electrocorticogram (ECoG) electrodes implanted in the temporal, lateral prefrontal, and orbitofrontal cortices of macaque monkeys. We recorded ECoG data from three monkeys during the omission paradigm and examined the functional connectivity between the temporal and frontal cortices by calculating phase-locking values (PLVs). This revealed that theta- (4–8 Hz), alpha- (8–12 Hz), and low-beta- (12–25 Hz) band synchronization increased at tone onset between the higher auditory cortex and the frontal pole where an early omission response was observed in the event-related potential (ERP). These synchronizations were absent when the tone was omitted. Conversely, low-beta-band (12–25 Hz) oscillation then became stronger for tone omission than for tone presentation approximately 200 ms after tone onset. The results suggest that auditory input is propagated to the frontal pole via the higher auditory cortex and that a reciprocal network may be involved in the generation of auditory prediction and prediction error. As impairments of prediction may underlie MMN reduction in patients with schizophrenia, an aberrant hierarchical temporal-frontal network might be related to this pathological condition. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a devastating mental disorder in children. Currently, there is no effective treatment for ASD. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), which is a non-invasive brain stimulation neuromodulation technology, is a promising method for the treatment of ASD. However, the manner in which tDCS changes the electrophysiological process in the brain is still unclear. In this study, we used tDCS to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex area of children with ASD (one group received anode tDCS, and the other received sham tDCS) and investigated the changes in evoked EEG signals and behavioral abilities before and after anode and sham stimulations. In addition to tDCS, all patients received conventional rehabilitation treatment. Results show that although conventional treatment can effectively improve the behavioral ability of children with ASD, the use of anode tDCS with conventional rehabilitation can boost this improvement, thus leading to increased treatment efficacy. In this study, we investigated whether self‐relevant information can accelerate the processing of emotional information. Our experiment, based on a passive auditory oddball paradigm, involved recording electroencephalography while participants listened to stimuli comprising their own names (ONs) and unfamiliar names (UNs) spoken with varying emotional prosody. At 220–300 ms, mismatch negativity (MMN) was more negative for ONs and angry prosody than for UNs and neutral prosody, respectively. These results suggest that attention is involuntarily attracted by ONs and emotional prosody, and that both types of information are given priority processing, even under pre‐attentive conditions. Importantly, ONs with angry prosody induced more negative MMN than did similar UNs and ONs with neutral prosody, which indicates that the motivational significance embedded in angry prosody promotes the self‐reference effect and, thus, involves more attention resources. At 300–500 ms, ONs triggered smaller P3a than did UNs, suggesting that less cognitive resources are required to process self‐relevant information. These results suggest that self‐relevant and emotional information of preferential processing interact with each other during the pre‐attentive stage, with self‐reference enhancing the processing of emotional information. Patients with schizophrenia show widespread impairments in clinical, cognitive and psychosocial functioning. Mismatch negativity (MMN) and gamma-band auditory steady-state response (ASSR) are two neurophysiological biomarkers widely used to inform diagnosis, guide treatments and track response to interventions in schizophrenia. However, evidence for the test-retest reliability of these indices across multiple sessions in schizophrenia patients remains scarce. In the present study, we included 34 schizophrenia patients (17 females) and obtained duration MMN (dMMN), frequency MMN (fMMN) and 40-Hz ASSR data across three sessions with intervals of 2 days. Event-related spectrum perturbation (ERSP) and inter-trial coherence (ITC) were calculated following Morlet wavelet time-frequency decomposition of ASSR data. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to quantify the reliability of MMN and ASSR measures among the three sessions. We found fair to good reliability for dMMN amplitudes but poor reliability for fMMN amplitudes. For the ASSR measures, ERSP showed good to excellent test-retest reliability while ITC had poor to fair test-retest reliability. In addition, the average of dMMN amplitudes was significantly correlated with that of ERSP across the three sessions. In summary, we established for the first time the short-term test-retest reliability of MMN and ASSR measures in schizophrenia patients. Sensory prediction is considered an important element of mismatch negativity (MMN) whose reduction is well known in patients with schizophrenia. Omission MMN is a variant of the MMN which is elicited by the absence of a tone previously sequentially presented. Omission MMN can eliminate the effects of sound differences in typical oddball paradigms and affords the opportunity to identify prediction-related signals in the brain. Auditory predictions are thought to reflect bottom-up and top-down processing within hierarchically organized auditory areas. However, the communications between the various subregions of the auditory cortex and the prefrontal cortex that generate and communicate sensory prediction-related signals remain poorly understood. To explore how the frontal and temporal cortices communicate for the generation and propagation of such signals, we investigated the response in the omission paradigm using electrocorticogram (ECoG) electrodes implanted in the temporal, lateral prefrontal, and orbitofrontal cortices of macaque monkeys. We recorded ECoG data from three monkeys during the omission paradigm and examined the functional connectivity between the temporal and frontal cortices by calculating phase-locking values (PLVs). This revealed that theta- (4–8 Hz), alpha- (8–12 Hz), and low-beta- (12–25 Hz) band synchronization increased at tone onset between the higher auditory cortex and the frontal pole where an early omission response was observed in the event-related potential (ERP). These synchronizations were absent when the tone was omitted. Conversely, low-beta-band (12–25 Hz) oscillation then became stronger for tone omission than for tone presentation approximately 200 ms after tone onset. The results suggest that auditory input is propagated to the frontal pole via the higher auditory cortex and that a reciprocal network may be involved in the generation of auditory prediction and prediction error. As impairments of prediction may underlie MMN reduction in patients with schizophrenia, an aberrant hierarchical temporal-frontal network might be related to this pathological condition.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a devastating mental disorder in children. Currently, there is no effective treatment for ASD. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), which is a non-invasive brain stimulation neuromodulation technology, is a promising method for the treatment of ASD. However, the manner in which tDCS changes the electrophysiological process in the brain is still unclear. In this study, we used tDCS to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex area of children with ASD (one group received anode tDCS, and the other received sham tDCS) and investigated the changes in evoked EEG signals and behavioral abilities before and after anode and sham stimulations. In addition to tDCS, all patients received conventional rehabilitation treatment. Results show that although conventional treatment can effectively improve the behavioral ability of children with ASD, the use of anode tDCS with conventional rehabilitation can boost this improvement, thus leading to increased treatment efficacy. Mismatch negativity (MMN) is widely considered a candidate diagnostic biomarker for schizophrenia (SCZ). Although blunted MMN responses have been reliably observed in psychosis, the evidence for MMN deficits in other disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD), is mixed. This study explores whether MMN alterations in amplitude or latency are unique to SCZ or extend to non-psychotic MDD patients. Seventeen patients diagnosed with a first MDD episode, 18 with recurrent MDD, 17 with first episode of SCZ spectrum disorder, and 18 with chronic SCZ, along with two groups of age- and sex-matched neurotypical controls (NC, 17 and 18), participated in a passive auditory MMN task during magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording. We examined the magnetic MMN (mMMN) amplitude and latency, exploring potential links between observed MMN alterations and psychotropic medication treatments. The mMMN amplitudes were significantly attenuated in SCZ compared to NC. Although, on average, mMMN amplitudes also appeared to be small in MDD, there was no significant difference between MDD and SCZ or NC. Notably, MDD patients had longer mMMN latencies compared to SCZ and NC, especially those with recurrent MDD. These results remained consistent after controlling for mood stabilizers, antidepressants, or benzodiazepines. These findings show that mMMN amplitude reductions may be more pronounced in psychotic disorders than in depressive disorders, whereas abnormal mMMN latencies may be more specific to MDD, suggesting differential mMMN alterations in SCZ and MDD. The mismatch negativity (MMN) is an event-related potential component that reflects pre-attentive change detection in the brain. As an electrophysiological index of processing that responds to differences in incoming consecutive stimuli, the MMN can be elicited through, for example, the presentation of two different categories of sounds in an oddball paradigm where sounds from the "standard" category occur frequently and sounds from the "deviant" category occur rarely. The specificity of what can elicit the MMN is yet to be fully defined. Here we test whether the MMN can be generated by an abstract linguistic contrast with no reliable acoustic cue. Previous studies have shown that the way in which an acoustic cue is used to elicit MMN is influenced by linguistic knowledge, but have not shown that a nonacoustic, abstract linguistic contrast can itself elicit MMN. In this study, we test the strongest interpretation of the claim that the MMN can be generated through a purely linguistic contrast by contrasting tenses in ablauting irregular English verbs (where there is no reliable acoustic cue for tense). We find that this contrast elicits a negativity, as do other linguistic contrasts previously shown to elicit MMN (a contrast between phonologically voiced and phonologically voiceless segments and a purely acoustic contrast between aspirated and unaspirated segments). Background: Although impaired auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) has consistently been found in individuals with schizophrenia, there are few and inconsistent reports on nonclinical individuals with schizotypy. To date, no studies have thoroughly assessed MMN with different degrees of deviant oddballs in nonclinical schizotypal samples. The aim of this study was to examine the extent of duration MMN (dMMN) amplitudes under two deviant duration conditions (large and small) in nonclinical participants with high schizotypal traits., Methods: An extreme-group design was utilized, in which 63 participants from the schizotypy and control groups were selected from a pool of 1519 young adults using the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ). MMN was measured using passive duration oddball paradigms. Basic demographic information and musical backgrounds were assessed and matched, while depression and anxiety were evaluated and controlled for. The repeated measures analysis of covariance was utilized to evaluate differences in dMMN between groups. The Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons. Partial correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to investigate the association between dMMN amplitudes and SPQ scores., Results: The amplitudes of dMMN at Cz were significantly increased under the large deviance condition in nonclinical schizotypal individuals ( F = 4.36, p = .04). Large-deviance dMMN amplitudes at Fz were positively correlated with mild cognitive-perceptual symptoms in the control group ( r p = .42, p = .03). However, as schizophrenia-like symptoms worsened and approached the clinical threshold for schizophrenia, small-deviance dMMN amplitudes at Cz showed negative associations with the cognitive-perceptual factor in the schizotypy group ( r p = -.40, p = .04)., Conclusion: These results suggest the importance of considering the degree of deviation in duration when implementing the auditory oddball paradigm among nonclinical participants with schizotypal traits. Mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude is reliably reduced in psychotic disorders. While several studies have examined this effect in first-degree relatives of individuals with schizophrenia, few have sought to quantify deficits in relatives of individuals with other psychotic disorders. While some conclude that, compared to healthy subjects, first-degree relatives of schizophrenia show reduced MMN, others contradict this finding. Furthermore, though MMN is often shown to be associated with cognitive impairments and clinical symptoms in psychotic disorders, to our knowledge no studies have sought to fully examine these relationships in studies of first-degree relatives. The present study sought to clarify the extent of MMN amplitude reductions in a large sample of siblings of individuals with diverse psychotic disorders (n = 67), compared to probands with psychosis (n = 221) and never psychotic comparison subjects (n = 251). We further examined associations of MMN amplitude with cognition and schizotypal symptoms across these groups. We found that MMN amplitude was intact in siblings compared to probands. MMN amplitude was associated with cognition and schizotypal symptoms dimensionally across levels of familial risk. The present results imply that MMN reductions do not reflect genetic risk for psychotic disorders per se, and instead emerge as a result of, or in conjunction with, clinical features associated with psychosis. Such findings carry important implications for the utility of MMN amplitude as an indicator of inherited risk, and suggest that this component may be best conceptualized as an endophenotype for clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments, rather than risk for psychosis per se.
