2. Fermi level tuning and atomic ordering induced giant anomalous Nernst effect in Co2MnAl1-xSix Heusler alloy

Abstract

Co2MnAl has been predicted to have Weyl points near Fermi level which is expected to give rise to exotic transverse transport properties such as large anomalous Hall(AHE) and Nernst effects(ANE) due to large Berry curvature. In this study, the effect of Fermi level position and atomic ordering on AHE and ANE in Co2MnAl1-xSix were studied systematically. The Co2MnAl film keeps B2-disordred structure regardless of annealing temperature, which results in much smaller anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_xy and transverse Peltier coefficient sigma_xy than those calculated for L21-ordered Co2MnAl. Our newly performed calculation of sigma_xy with taking B2 disordering into account well reproduces experimental result, thus it was concluded that Berry curvature originating from Weyl points is largely reduced by B2 disordering. It was also revealed Al substitution with Si shifts the position of Fermi level and improves the L21-atomic ordering largely, leading to strong enhancement of sigma_xy, which also agreed with our theoretical calculation. The highest thermopower of ANE of 6.1uV, which is comparable to the recent reports for Co2MnGa, was observed for Co2MnAl0.63Si0.37 because of dominant contribution of sigma_xy. Abstract

The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), a thermoelectric phenomenon in magnetic materials, has potential for novel energy harvesting applications because its orthogonal relationship between the temperature gradient and the electric field enables us to utilize the large area of non-flat heat sources. In this study, the required thermopower of ANE for practical energy harvesting applications is evaluated in simulations of electric power obtainable from ANE using a low-temperature heat source. A strategy for finding magnetic materials having large ANEs is proposed, which suggests that a large ANE originates from the constructive relationship between large Seebeck, anomalous Hall, and transverse Peltier effects. This strategy leads us to investigate the electric and thermoelectric properties in Co2MnAl1-xSix. As a result, it is found that Co2MnAl0.63Si0.37 has the largest ANE thermopower ever reported, 6.2 uV/K. A first principles calculation of the anomalous Hall conductivity and transverse Peltier coefficient in B2 and L21-ordered Co2MnAl0.63Si0.37 shows close agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the observed large ANE arises from the intrinsic Berry phase curvature of Co2MnAl1-xSix. Abstract

We present the SPICA Coronagraphic Instrument (SCI), which has been designed for a concentrated study of extra-solar planets (exoplanets). SPICA mission provides us with a unique opportunity to make high contrast observations because of its large telescope aperture, the simple pupil shape, and the capability for making infrared observations from space. The primary objectives for the SCI are the direct coronagraphic detection and spectroscopy of Jovian exoplanets in infrared, while the monitoring of transiting planets is another important target. The specification and an overview of the design of the instrument are shown. In the SCI, coronagraphic and non-coronagraphic modes are applicable for both an imaging and a spectroscopy. The core wavelength range and the goal contrast of the coronagraphic mode are 3.5--27$\mu$m, and 10$^{-6}$, respectively. Two complemental designs of binary shaped pupil mask coronagraph are presented. The SCI has capability of simultaneous observations of one target using two channels, a short channel with an InSb detector and a long wavelength channel with a Si:As detector. Abstract

The electron transport through an array of tunnel junctions consisting of an STM tip and a granular film is studied both theoretically and experimentally. When the tunnel resistance between the tip and a granule on the surface is much larger than those between granules, a bottleneck of the tunneling current is created in the array. It is shown that the period of the Coulomb staircase(CS) is given by the capacitance at the bottleneck. Our STM experiments on Co-Al-O granular films show the CS with a single period at room temperature. This provides a new possibility for single-electron-spin-electronic devices at room temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Heusler alloys are theoretically predicted to become half-metals at room temperature (RT). The advantages of using these alloys are good lattice matching with major substrates, high Curie temperature above RT and intermetallic controllability for spin density of states at the Fermi energy level. The alloys are categorised into half- and full-Heusler alloys depending upon the crystalline structures, each being discussed both experimentally and theoretically in Section 2. Fundamental properties of ferromagnetic Heusler alloys are described in Section 3. Both structural and magnetic characterisations on an atomic scale are typically carried out in order to prove the half-metallicity at RT as described in Section 4. Atomic ordering in the Heusler-alloy films is directly observed by X-ray diffraction and is also indirectly probed via the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity. Element specific magnetic moments and spin polarisation of the Heusler alloy films are directly measured using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and Andreev reflection, respectively. By employing these ferromagnetic alloy films in a spintronic device, efficient spin injection into a non-magnetic material and large magnetoresistance are discussed in Section 5. Fundamental properties of antiferromagnetic Heusler alloys are described in Section 6. Both structural and magnetic characterisations on an atomic scale are shown in Section 7. Atomic ordering in the Heusler-alloy films is indirectly measured by the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity. Antiferromagnetic configurations are directly imaged by X-ray magnetic linear dichroism and polarised neutron reflection. Section 8 explains applications of the antiferromagnetic Heusler-alloy films. The other non-magnetic Heusler alloys are listed in Section 9. A brief summary is provided at the end of this review.

Abstract

The magnetoresistance (MR) in Fe/Cr magnetic multilayers (MML) has been measured under high pressure up to 2.5 GPa. It is found that the spin-dependent scattering plays an important role in the pressure dependence of MR ratio. In the present work, for [[Fe(20 [Angstrom])/Cr(10 [Angstrom])].sub.20] MML with antiferromagnetic (AF) state, the pressure coefficient of saturation field [H.sub.s] is (1/[H.sub.s])([partial derivative][H.sub.s]/P[partial derivative]) = 3.3 x [10.sup.-2] [GPa.sup.-1] between 0.1 and 2.5 GPa. We found that the (1/|J|)([partial derivative]|J|/[partial derivative]P) for AF-Fe/Cr MML with polycrystalline structure is opposite in sign to that with epitaxial one. For [Fe(20 [[Angstrom])/Cr(22 [Angstrom])].sub.20] MML with ferromagnetic (F) state, anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) decreases with increasing pressure. It is suggested that the anisotropy constant decreases with weakening spin-orbit interaction at high pressure. At high field, the AMR is easily suppressed by applying pressure while the giant magnetoresistance around [H.sub.s] increases slightly with increasing pressure for polycrystalline Fe/Cr MML. A technique for viscosity measurement is developed based on the principle of laser-induced surface deformation. The technique is useful at high viscosities since the measurement takes only a few seconds even in the specimen with 10 to thee poser of 6 cSt, and the method has a great advantage of a noncontact feature and is appropriate for measuring the liquids that strongly dislike contamination.

A study was conducted on the microstructures of Co-Al-O granular thin films. The samples were prepared by the sputter-deposition method with various oxygen partial pressures. The results indicate that the giant magnetoresistance behavior seen in the Co-Al-O films is closely correlated with the width of the insulating channel and the grain size of the magnetic particles.
