2. An Actionable Guide to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Scholarly Communication

Abstract

Libraries strive to increase diversity in the workforce and foster equity and inclusion through the resources and services we provide. Recognizing the inequities and biases that exist within the scholarly publishing ecosystem, the authors created a publicly accessible online resource on the University of California Office of Scholarly Communication website to guide stakeholders to actions they could take to create more equitable scholarly communication environments. The resulting site offers distinct sections for peer reviewers, editorial boards, authors, scholarly publishers, and libraries, each summarizing research into the equity challenges for that group and suggesting actionable steps for addressing these challenges. We hope that, by interacting with this resource, scholarly communication stakeholders will gain a better understanding of the landscape and know how to take action. This poster will present our model for raising awareness of the inequities in the scholarly publishing ecosystem and encouraging participants to take concrete steps to reduce barriers and inequities in scholarly publishing. We will describe how we first identified the need for such a resource, engaged stakeholders in a review of the initial draft, modified that draft in response to feedback, and are currently implementing our recommendations in our library-based publishing setting. We will explore some of the challenges we face in ensuring that the resource remains up-to-date and relevant over time. Suggestions will also be provided for linking to this resource on library and publisher web pages and for contacting the group with suggestions and feedback.Presented at the American Library Association 2024 Conference.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Given that the success of vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) relies on herd immunity, identifying patients at risk for vaccine hesitancy is imperative-particularly for those at high risk for severe COVID-19 (i.e., minorities and patients with neurological disorders). METHODS: Among patients from a large neuroscience institute in Hawaii, vaccine hesitancy was investigated in relation to over 30 sociodemographic variables and medical comorbidities, via a telephone quality improvement survey conducted between 23 January 2021 and 13 February 2021. RESULTS: Vaccine willingness (n = 363) was 81.3%. Univariate analysis identified that the odds of vaccine acceptance reduced for patients who do not regard COVID-19 as a severe illness, are of younger age, have a lower Charlson Comorbidity Index, use illicit drugs, or carry Medicaid insurance. Multivariable logistic regression identified the best predictors of vaccine hesitancy to be: social media use to obtain COVID-19 information, concerns regarding vaccine safety, self-perception of a preexisting medical condition contraindicated with vaccination, not having received the annual influenza vaccine, having some high school education only, being a current smoker, and not having a prior cerebrovascular accident. Unique amongst males, a conservative political view strongly predicted vaccine hesitancy. Specifically for Asians, a higher body mass index, while for Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders (NHPI), a positive depression screen, both reduced the odds of vaccine acceptance. CONCLUSION: Upon identifying the variables associated with vaccine hesitancy amongst patients with neurological disorders, our clinic is now able to efficiently provide ancillary COVID-19 education to sub-populations at risk for vaccine hesitancy. While our results may be limited to the sub-population of patients with neurological disorders, the findings nonetheless provide valuable insight to understanding vaccine hesitancy.

Abstract

Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver (UESL) is an extremely rare and aggressive malignancy in adults.1 Adults with UESL have a worse prognosis compared to pediatric population.2 Due to the rarity of this disease in adults, there has been a lack of information that assists in treatment decisions within this group. Improved understanding of UESL in adults might assist in understanding biological differences compared to pediatric cohorts as well as tailor treatments to improve their overall outcome. We described the management and outcome of a young adult managed at our center with metastatic relapsed UESL. For comparison, a PubMed search for adolescent and young adult (AYA) and adults with UESL was performed with the aim to review and address any distinct clinical features, different aspects of management and survival outcomes within this population. A 21-year-old male underwent right hepatectomy for a large 16 cm localized UESL with clear surgical margin and did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy. Seven months postsurgery, he relapsed with both local and metastatic disease and underwent chemotherapy with vincristine, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide alternating with ifosfamide and etoposide achieving a complete metabolic response. This was followed by Stereotactic Ablative Radiation Therapy and surgical resection of residual disease. He remains free of disease 3 years since his diagnosis. We subsequently reviewed 42 AYA and adults (aged >15) with UESL (median age, 33 years) between 1991 and 2022. Most patients presented with localized UESL and for those treated with surgery alone, 67% developed recurrences. Those receiving multimodality treatment, better outcomes, and reduced relapse rate was achieved. Twenty-seven patients developed recurrences, 13 with local recurrences and 14 with metastatic relapse. The median time to relapse was 12 months. We reported a successful outcome in multimodality treatment which resulted in long remission in a young adult with relapsed UESL. Combination of perioperative chemotherapy with locoregional treatment is important to improve long-term survival in adults with metastatic UESL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Large scale renewables raise new challenges and provide new opportunities across electricity systems. This paper considers the barriers faced by large scale renewables in electricity systems in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. We review the current state of knowledge in relation to grid-connected renewables. This paper then explores key issues in electricity systemstructure, the main challenges to the uptake of renewables, and the various existing fiscal and policy approaches to encouraging renewables. We also highlight possible ways moving forward to ensure more widespread renewables deployment.

Abstract

Autonomous underwater vehicles provide water column observations of phytoplankton biomass using chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorometers. However, under high incident light, phytoplankton fluorescence yield decreases in a process known as non‐photochemical quenching, resulting in a reduced Chl a fluorescence signal. Methods have been developed to identify and remove the quenched signal from observations by autonomous underwater vehicles. These existing methods rely on assumptions of the homogeneity of the system, both in terms of time (i.e., between day and night observations) and space (i.e., within the water column or between neighboring profiles). These assumptions are not valid in shallow shelf seas or when sampling across different water masses. Thus, we evaluate six new quenching correction methods based on an existing ocean‐based method, but adapted for a continental shelf sea environment where the water mass changes between night and day observations. We have included two main changes to the existing method. First, we interpolate the unquenched, nighttime signal across the daytime observations and use this as a reference for correcting the quenched, daytime signal. Second, we explore the inclusion of a fluorescence quenching depth limit. By interpolating nighttime observations across daytime periods, the diel changes in non‐photochemical quenching were separated from the phytoplankton population changes. The proposed methods all show improved performance compared to existing approach. The methods presented here, and the approach used to evaluate them, are applicable in other shelf sea environments, enabling studies using autonomous Chl a fluorescence data across shelf sea ecosystems. 45. Remote sensing of inherent and apparent optical properties in optically complex shelf seas

Abstract

Variability in the patterns of ocean colour is frequently observed in shelf seas, where a combination of phytoplankton cells, mineral particles and coloured dissolved organic matter are driving the optical properties of the water column. Understanding the contributions of each material to the total optical properties is essential for understanding and monitoring the processes which affect shelf sea ecosystems. Lee et al. (2002, 2005b, 2007, 2009, 2013) developed a method for the recovery of the absorption, backscattering and mean diffuse attenuation co-efficients and the euphotic depth from the remote sensing reflectance. Using the Irish Sea as a study site, the procedure of Lee et al. and two empirical methods for recovering the euphotic depth (Cunningham et al., 2013 and Zhao et al., 2013), were evaluated. The methods were initially adjusted based on a regional bio-optical model, then validated against field data with excellent recoveries of all parameters. By considering the backscattering to absorption ratios of phytoplankton and mineral particles, a new method for separating the total absorption coefficient recovered by the quasi-analytical algorithm into the phytoplankton and mineral components was developed. Application of this method to the bio-optical model created for the Irish Sea recovered phytoplankton and mineral absorption coefficients which were well correlated with the modelled values. The sensitivity of the absorption partitioning procedure to the assumption made about CDOM variability was evaluated, demonstrating the phytoplankton and mineral absorption coefficients could be recovered within the Irish Sea with root mean square errors of 0.02 m⁻¹ and 0.009⁻¹ respectively. The inversion methods developed and validated were applied to eight years of MODIS data. This showed both spatial and temporal variability for all parameters, which corresponded to different mixing regimes and were explained in terms of phytoplankton cells and mineral particles. The results obtained from the satellite imagery have demonstrated that optical remote sensing can be used to provide an insight into shelf sea ecosystems.
