6. Instructional Leadership for a 21st Century Learning Initiative: How Principals and Teacher Leaders Facilitate Organizational Learning

Abstract

This thesis describes how principals and teacher leaders facilitate organizational learning while implementing a 21st century learning initiative through instructional leadership practices. The inclusion of 21st century learning skillsets and initiatives in the classroom stems from educational research that recognizes that students need to be prepared with skills and experiences that will equip them for the modern workforce. The shift to 21st century learning requires schools and districts to utilize instructional leaders, including principals and teacher leaders, to redirect curriculum implementation, professional development, and evaluation and facilitate organizational learning processes within their school building. This study explored three elementary schools within a school district that had established a 21st century learning initiative program. These schools serve as current exemplars of 21st century learning within the district, given their depth of engagement with the district's initiatives and pilot programs. At each school site, principals and teacher leaders completed a semi-structured interview in order to share their experiences with 21st century learning implementation, instructional leadership of that initiative, and how their school has learned and grown through the process. The multi-case study research design allowed for themes and findings to be explored both within each case site as well as across case sites. This research exploration yielded findings that included: 1) the importance of positive communication and trust with staff and the community; 2) the need for formal implementation support structures as well as time and mentorship; 3) the potential utility of using evaluation as a tool to promote implementation; 4) the necessity of aligning district and school implementation expectations with existing goals; 5) the efficacy of individualizing solutions and implementation processes; and finally, 6) the inspirational effects of evaluating student growth from the implementation and reflecting on these changes. These findings have implications for practitioners within and outside of the school district who are embarking on 21st century learning initiatives. Additionally, there are implications for future research concerning instructional leadership and organizational learning within 21st century learning contexts. 8. Variation in Care of Well-Appearing Hypothermic Young Infants: A Multisite Study

Abstract

Numerous decision tools have emerged to guide management of febrile infants, but limited data exist to guide the care of young infants presenting with hypothermia. We evaluated the variation in care for well-appearing hypothermic young infants in the hospital and/or emergency department setting between participating sites.This is a retrospective cohort study of well-appearing infants ≤90 days old across 9 academic medical centers from September 1, 2016 to May 5, 2021. Infants were identified via billing codes for hypothermia or an initial temperature ≤36.0°C with manual chart review performed. Primary outcomes included assessment of variation in diagnostic evaluation, disposition, empirical antimicrobial therapy, and length of stay.Of 14 278 infants originally identified, 739 met inclusion criteria. Significant interhospital variation occurred across all primary outcomes. Across sites, a full serious bacterial illness evaluation was done in 12% to 76% of hypothermic infants. Empirical antibiotics were administered 20% to 87% of the time. Performance of herpes simplex viral testing ranged from 7% to 84%, and acyclovir was empirically started 8% to 82% of the time. Hospital admission rates ranged from 45% to 100% of patients.Considerable variation across multiple aspects of care exists for well-appearing young infants presenting with hypothermia. An improved understanding of hypothermic young infants and their risk of infection can lead to the development of clinical decision tools to guide appropriate evaluation and management.

Abstract

Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) is an important temperate legume for livestock production systems. Lucerne requires a recovery period after a defoliation event so that taproot energy and nutrient stores can be replenished. A field experiment examined the effects of recovery period management following defoliation, on lucerne herbage production and nutritive value at two contrasting sites in Victoria, Australia. Sites were established at Rutherglen and Hamilton, using established SARDI Seven lucerne stands. Treatments were short recovery (SR; plots cut at 21‐day intervals), long recovery (LR; plots cut at 42‐day intervals), new shoots (NS; plots cut when new shoots from the crown were at least 2 cm long) and new shoots + flowering (NSF; as for NS but plots were left to grow to reach late flowering from late summer to mid‐autumn). At each defoliation, measurements were made of phenology, dry matter production and herbage nutrient concentrations (neutral detergent fibre, crude protein, metabolisable energy and water‐soluble carbohydrate %). Persistence was measured at approximately 6‐month intervals. At both sites, lucerne persisted equally well in all treatments although SR showed some decline at Hamilton at the final measurement. LR led to a more productive pasture (in terms of cumulative dry matter, neutral detergent fibre, crude protein, metabolisable energy and water‐soluble carbohydrate %) than the three other treatments. The results indicate that phenological management systems that allow lucerne to replenish reserves through late summer and autumn are unnecessary in mild winter environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Despite native grasses occupying a large area of land in Australia, there has been limited work on the responses of these species to the addition of phosphorus (P). The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the addition of P to create a range of P contents in the soil on the productivity and morphology of two native grasses at two times of harvests. Two contrasting perennial native grasses, namely kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra Forssk. syn. T. australis R. Br. Stapf) and weeping grass [Microlaena stipoides var. stipoides (Labill.) R. Br.] were grown in a glasshouse with the addition of P to create five contents of P in the soil (7, 17, 32, 107 and 307mgkg-1 soil) using a completely randomised design with four replicates per treatment. Grasses were harvested to 5cm above the substrate surface, and the number of tillers and leaf area were recorded on Day 84 (harvest 1) and Day 112 (harvest 2) of the experiment. Dry matter production for kangaroo and weeping grass increased with P contents of the soil of 32mg and ≥107mgPkg-1 soil, respectively. Increased dry matter production for both species was the result of increased leaf area, tiller number and root growth. These results provide data that help to understand the disappearance sequence of kangaroo grass from more fertile soils and an increase in weeping grass, particularly in soils with greater fertility. Further research is required to determine if these results hold for other grass ecotypes.
