Abstract Effluent reuse is a rapidly growing field of research where assessing the quality of effluent is one of the focus areas. This research examines the viability of using wastewater in agriculture by testing an integrated Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor with a trickling filter (TF) system during the dry season. Compliance monitoring was conducted for 30 days from May 11 to June 9 of 2021. Samples were collected, handled, and analyzed following standard wastewater analysis procedures for biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), volatile suspended solids (VSS), cations, anions, heavy metals, E. coli, and helminth egg. The UASB-TF system in Kality wastewater treatment performed well in removing COD, BOD5, and TSS with average removal rates of 80.5%, 82.9%, and 80.9%, respectively, compared well with similar treatment configurations. The effluent quality satisfied the national inland discharge limit with a residual concentration of 125.1 mg/L for COD, 61.7 mg/L for BOD5 and 85.8 mg/L for TSS. On the other hand, high concentrations of chromium, nitrate-nitrogen, and helminth egg count restricted effluent reuse for agricultural purposes due to high health risks and environmental contamination. We found out that discharging industrial sewage into the domestic sewer network could inhibit microbial growth and affect the biological treatment processes. Furthermore, adopting integrated treatment systems in developing countries might face operational challenges and monitoring nitrate, helminth egg, and heavy metals would help provide timely operational feedback. An appropriate tertiary treatment unit—constructed wetlands or polishing ponds—is therefore needed to be introduced to ensure effluent reuse for agricultural purposes.

Drought is a complex natural hazard that can cause damage to socio-economic and biophysical systems in any climatic region. The main objective of this paper was to analyze the spatiotemporal drought in the semi-arid Borana area of southern Ethiopia from 1981 to 2018. The climate data was obtained from the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute. Standardized precipitation index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at 3- and 12-month timescales were adopted to characterize drought during these periods and wet seasons in time and space. The results revealed that moderate to extreme drought conditions at various stations frequently hit months stretching from March to June and September to November. The years 1984, 1985, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2011 were known to be the driest years, among others. A total of 484, 563, 573 and 620 combined moderate, severe and extreme drought events were observed across all stations using SPI-3, SPEI-3, SPI-12 and SPEI-12, respectively. Internal variability among the stations was noticed regarding the frequency and magnitude of drought. Ganna (March to May), the season that was supposed to be the main rainy season in the region, was by far drier than Hagayya (September to November), the short rainy period. In general, this study found a high frequency and intense magnitude of drought that varies across the stations. Therefore, any localized adaptation and mitigation strategies intended to tackle or minimize drought-associated impacts should take into account this local variability.

This paper has examined the variability and trends of rainfall in the Borana zone, southern Ethiopia. Monthly rainfall data from 1981 to 2018 were obtained from the National Meteorological Agency (NMA) of Ethiopia. Mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation were employed to analyze temporal variability. Mann–Kendall (MK) test and Sen's slope estimator (SEE) were used to determine trend and its magnitude, respectively. The inverse weighting distance (IDW) interpolation technique was employed to generate surface data and produce spatial rainfall maps. April and Belg were the wettest month and season, respectively. On an annual basis, Arero (741 mm) followed by Teltele (629 mm) were the wettest stations, whereas the Dillo station (285 mm) was the driest. Abstract Background Understanding the climate variability at local scale could help suggest local adaptation responses to manage climate associated risks. This paper analyzed the variability and trend of climate in semi-arid Borana zone of southern Ethiopia over the period 1981–2018 using Mann–Kendall (MK) test, Sen’s Slope Estimator (SEE) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation technique. Gridded (4 km * 4 km) climate data (daily precipitation, daily maximum temperature (Tmax) and minimum temperature (Tmin)) were collected from National Meteorology Agency (NMA) of Ethiopia. Results The results revealed the study area received a mean monthly precipitation of 39.19 mm and a monthly mean Tmax and Tmin of 29.66 °C and 16.31 °C were observed respectively. Rainfall shows a significant increasing trend during August, October and November and extremely variable during December, January and February where CV > 100%. Tmax shows a significant warming trend during August but January, February, August and October exhibited similar trend for Tmin. Rainfall and Tmin shows a significant trend during Meher and no trend for the rest of the seasons. Mean annual rainfall shows a significant increase where no trend observed for both Tmax and Tmin at this timescale. Decadal rainfall and Tmin exhibited no trend but Tmax show significant warming trend during 2001–2010 decade. Better rainfall and cooler temperature were observed in the north central, northeastern and northwestern whereas the southeastern and southwestern regions were drier and warmer. Conclusion Rainfall is highly variable than temperature both at temporal and spatial scales in Borana. The intensity of rainfall decreases from the northeastern and northwestern parts towards the southwest while temperature increased from the north central parts towards the southwest for Tmax and the southeast for Tmin. The effect of topography is substantial for the local scale variability observed in the study area. Internal variability is observed at temporal and spatial scales and therefore any adaptation responses to local climate variability should consider the microscale climate.

In this paper, we analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation and its association with climate variables in the Borana rangelands of southern Ethiopia. Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data, namely, MODIS/TERRA, MOD09Q1 16-day L3 Global 250 m Version 6 from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) United States Geological Survey (USGS), and climate data from 2000 to 2018 obtained from the National Meteorological Agency (NMA) of Ethiopia are used to determine the vegetation dynamics both at annual and seasonal timescales. The results indicate that the NDVI varies between .31 and .41, and the study area is dominated by sparse vegetation, especially shrubs and grasslands. The Borana rangelands were previously dominated by open grasslands, perennial herbaceous and woody vegetations, and some encroaching woody vegetations. The NDVI revealed poorer vegetation growth than the vegetation condition index (VCI) between 2000 and 2018, although variations were observed spatiotemporally. Rainfall was more highly variable both at annual and seasonal scales than the temperature during the studied years. The climate variables significantly determined the condition of vegetation, particularly during the growing seasons compared to other periods. A significant strong positive correlation was observed between the NDVI, VCI, and climate variables during the main (Belg) and short (Meher) rainy seasons in the Borana rangelands. The results of this study are beneficial for the development of proper intervention policies and provide information for sustainable rangeland management.
