8. Valorization of coal mine effluents - Challenges and economic opportunities

Abstract

Coal-mine effluent treatment has the potential to both reduce the environmental impact of the effluent and provide economic opportunities by recovering valuable minerals and clean water. In this study, we modeled a novel treatment process, which includes nanofiltration (NF), two-step crystallization, reverse osmosis (RO), electrodialysis (ED), multi-effect distillation (MED), and a NaCl crystallizer, and performed a techno-economic analysis of its full-scale implementation, using a circular economy approach. We estimated the thermal and electrical energy consumption to be 745.5 kWhth/tonNaCland 565.1 kWhel/tonNaCl(or 13.6 kWhthand 10.3 kWhelper m3of feed effluent), respectively. The levelized cost of the NaCl salt that accounts for the revenue from the plant's co-products (Mg(OH)2, CaSO4and, pure water) was estimated to be 203 USD/tonNaCl. The economic viability of the treatment chain can be improved by using renewable electricity sources, reducing the total expenditure on NF and RO, and integrating alternate technologies into the treatment plant, Energy & Industry

Abstract

The Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) sorption kinetics and equilibrium on hybrid material, composed of pectin and titanium dioxide nanopowder, were examined. Parameters, such as pH and adsorbent dose, were also investigated. The experimental data were better described by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities were 1.37, 0.68, 0.51, and 0.83 mmol/g for Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. The introduction of nano-TiO2improved the kinetics of the metal ion sorption. The titanium dioxide, despite its small content (6%), contributes to the removal of the examined metal ions and eventually to the adsorption capacity of hybrid beads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Production of chlorine and sodium hydroxide in the membrane electrolysis plants requires saturated brines, free of calcium, magnesium, and sulfates. On the other hand, desalination plants produce waste brines, which are considered as an environmental hazard. Electrodialysis with univalent permselective membranes can simultaneously preconcentrate the sodium chloride solution up to the level required by the chlor-alkali industry and decrease the salinity of the desalination plant brines. In order to assess the bivalent ions transport across univalent permselective membranes during the NaCl concentration process, a series of batch-scale experiments were performed in an electrodialyzer of 4.5 cm2effective membrane area and four membrane pairs. The tested membranes were Neosepta CMS/ACS and Aciplex K-192/A-192, the tested concentration range was 0.3–3.0 g/L in case of Ca2+, 0.6–6.0 g/L in case of Mg2+, 1–20 g/L in case of, and 35–300 g/L in case of NaCl. The results allowed the estimation of empirical mass transport coefficients in the membrane. Based on the estimated parameters and a hydrodynamic model of a single-pass electrodialyzer, an electrodialyzer was designed and the energy consumption of saturated brine production was estimated. Abstract

In this work, the possibility of using electrodialysis for the treatment of liquid low-level radioactive waste was investigated. The first aim of the research was to evaluate the influence of the process parameters on the treatment of model solutions with different compositions. Subsequent experimental tests were conducted using solutions containing selected radionuclides (60Co and 137Cs), which are potential contaminants of effluents from nuclear power plants, as well as components often found in waste generated from industrial and medical radioisotope applications. The results of the experiments performed on real radioactive waste confirmed that electrodialysis was a suitable method for the treatment of such effluents because it ensured high levels of desalination and rates of decontamination. The most important parameters impacting the process were the applied voltage and electrical current. Moreover, this research shows that the application of the ED process enables the separation of non-ionic organic contaminants of LLW, which are unfavorable in further stages of waste predisposal. Abstract

The purpose of this work was the elemental analysis of 12 heavy metals concentration in some part in femur capitulum smoking and non smoking women and men, living in Silesian Towns: Katowice, Siemianowice, Czeladź. Femoral capitulum were obtained at total hip replacement operations of 86 women and men with idiopathic osteroarthrosis which smoking in early time.
