The shape of the ocean floor (bathymetry) and the overlaying sediments provide the largest carbon sink throughout Earth's history, supporting ~one to two orders of magnitude more carbon storage than the oceans and atmosphere combined. While accumulation and erosion of these sediments are bathymetry dependent (e.g., due to pressure, temperature, salinity, ion concentration, and available productivity), no systemic study has quantified how global and basin scale bathymetry, controlled by the evolution of tectonics and mantle convection, affects the long-term carbon cycle. We reconstruct bathymetry spanning the last 80 Myr to describe steady-state changes in ocean chemistry within the Earth system model LOSCAR. We find that both bathymetry reconstructions and representative synthetic tests show that ocean alkalinity, calcite saturation state, and the carbonate compensation depth (CCD) are strongly dependent on changes in shallow bathymetry (ocean floor =600 m) and on the distribution of the deep marine regions (>1,000 m). Limiting Cenozoic evolution to bathymetry alone leads to predicted CCD variations spanning 500 m, 33 to 50% of the total observed variations in the paleoproxy records. Our results suggest that neglecting bathymetric changes leads to significant misattribution to uncertain carbon cycle parameters (e.g., atmospheric CO2 and water column temperature) and processes (e.g., biological pump efficiency and silicate-carbonate riverine flux). To illustrate this point, we use our updated bathymetry for an Early Paleogene C cycle case study. We obtain carbonate riverine flux estimates that suggest a reversal of the weathering trend with respect to present-day, contrasting with previous studies, but consistent with proxy records and tectonic reconstructions. Rock textures observed via thin section are skewed from their true 3D nature. This is due to various cut effects—artifacts introduced due to the lower dimensional nature of the thin section relative to the rock. These cut effects can be corrected, and several methods have been developed to invert crystal shape and crystal size, but with each process performed separately and sequentially. With the ongoing adoption of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) by petrologists, an additional data stream has now become available: the 3D orientation of 2D grain sections. For EBSD analysis, no stereological corrections are typically applied for interpreting the data. This study tests whether this orientational information is skewed due to a fabric cut effect. We test this by numerically generating synthetic crystal datasets representative of several crystal shapes and population sizes. We find that EBSD orientational data has a fabric cut effect since crystals oriented with long axes perpendicular to the thin section are more likely to be sampled compared to those with long axes oriented parallel to it. This effect must be accounted for to interpret the true 3D fabric accurately. Towards this end, we develop two new tools for working with EBSD-derived fabric: (1) a simple first-order test for determining if a measured fabric exceeds that of the fabric cut effect, and (2) a method of inverting cut fabrics that provides robust error estimations. We demonstrate the applicability and accuracy of these methods using a range of synthetic examples and a natural sample. With these newly developed tools, there is clear potential for a new textural toolkit framework, to further our ability to correct for the various cut effects while also providing accurate uncertainty estimates. Large igneous provinces (LIPs) represent some of the greatest volcanic events in Earth history with significant impacts on ecosystems, including mass extinctions. However, some fundamental questions related to the eruption rate, eruption style, and vent locations for LIP lava flows remain unanswered. In this review, we use the Cretaceous–Paleogene Deccan Traps as an archetype to address these questions because they are one of the best-preserved large continental flood basalt provinces. We describe the volcanological features of the Deccan flows and the potential temporal and regional variations as well as the spatial characteristics of potential feeder dikes. Along with estimates of mean long-term eruption rates for individual Deccan lavas from paleomagnetism and Hg proxy records of ∼50–250 km3/year (erupting for tens to hundreds of years), the Deccan volcanic characteristics suggest a unified conceptual model for eruption of voluminous (>1,000 km3) LIP lavas with large spatial extent (>40,000 km2). We conclude by highlighting a few key open questions and challenges that can help improve our understanding of how the Deccan flows, as well as LIP flows in general, erupted and the mechanisms by which the lavas may have flowed over distances up to 1,000 km. The Deccan Traps are an archetype for addressing fundamental volcanological questions related to eruption rate, eruption style, and vent locations for large igneous province lava flows. Deccan subprovinces likely evolved as separate volcanic systems; thus, long-distance/interprovince flow correlations must be carefully assessed. The earliest eruptions came through the Narmada-Tapi rift zone followed by the establishment of a separate magmatic plumbing system by mantle plume–associated magmas. Typical Deccan eruption rates were ∼50–250 km3/year of lava. Individual eruptions lasted for a few hundred to 1,000 years and were separated by hiatuses of 3,000–6,000 years. In this study, we examine the influence of the mantle and large-scale tectonics on the global mid-ocean ridge (MOR) system. Using solely seismically-inferred upper mantle temperatures below the melting zone (260-600 km) and an interpretable machine learning model (Random Forest and Principal Component Analysis), we can predict a priori the location (ocean basin and ridge system) of global MOR with up to 90% accuracy. Two features provide > 50% of the discriminative power: the temperature difference between the mid-layer (340-500 km) and other depths, and the depth-averaged temperature of the upper mantle. We suggest long-term (100s Myr) tectonic and large-scale convective processes primarily driven by deep subduction left ample, distinct but hidden fingerprints in the mantle that allow us to separate regions at ∼1000 km scale. Continental flood basalts intruded and erupted millions of km3 of magma over ∼1–5 Ma. Previous work proposed the presence of large (>105 $ > {\mathrm{10}}^{5}$–106 km3) crustal magma reservoirs to feed these eruptions. However, in Paper I, we illustrated that this model is inconsistent with observations, by combining eruptive rate constraints with geochemical and geophysical observations from the Deccan Traps and other Continental flood basalt provinces (CFBs). Here, we use a new mechanical magma reservoir model to calculate the variation of eruptive fluxes (km3/year) and volumes for different magmatic architectures. We find that a single magma reservoir cannot explain the eruptive rate and duration constraints for CFBs. Using a 1D thermal model and characteristic timescales for magma reservoirs, we conclude that CFB eruptions were likely fed by a number of interconnected small‐medium (∼102–103 km3) magma reservoirs. It is unlikely that each individual magma reservoir participated in every eruption, thus permitting the occasional formation of large xenocrysts (e.g., megacrystic plagioclase). This magmatic architecture permits (a) large volume eruptive episodes with 10–100s of years duration, and (b) relatively short time‐periods separating eruptive episodes (1000s of years) since multiple mechanisms can trigger eruptions (via magma recharge or volatile exsolution, as opposed to long term (105–106 year) accumulation of buoyancy overpressure), and (c) lack of large upper‐crustal intrusive bodies in various geophysical datasets. Our new proposed magmatic architecture has significant implications for the tempo of CFB volatile release (CO2 and SO2), potentially helping explain the pre‐K‐Pg warming associated with Deccan Traps. Flood basalts are some of the largest magmatic events in Earth history, with intrusion and eruption of millions of km3 of basaltic magma over a short time period (∼1–5 Ma). A typical continental flood basalt (CFB) is emplaced in hundreds of individual eruptive episodes lasting decades to centuries with lava flow volumes of 103–104 km3. These large volumes have logically led to CFB models invoking large magma reservoirs (>104 $ > {\mathrm{10}}^{4}$–105 km3) within the crust or at Moho depth. Since there are currently no active CFB provinces, we must rely on observations of past CFBs with varying degrees of surface exposure to develop and test models. In the last few decades, significant improvements in geochronological, geochemical, paleomagnetic, volcanological, and paleo‐proxy measurements have provided high‐resolution constraints on CFB eruptive tempo ‐ the volume, duration, and frequency of individual eruptive episodes. Using the well‐studied Deccan Traps as an archetype for CFB systems, we compile multiple lines of evidence–geochronology, eruption tempo, dike spatial distribution, intrusive‐extrusive ratio, geochemical variations, and volcanological observations–to assess the viability of previous models. We find that the presence of just a few large crustal magma reservoirs is inconsistent with these constraints. Although observations from the Deccan Traps primarily motivate our model, we discuss constraints from other CFBs to illustrate that this conclusion may be broadly applicable for CFB magmatic systems in general. Its extraordinary level of geologic activity, its potential for habitability, and the prospects of returning samples from its plume of erupting water ice make Saturn's small (∼500 km diameter) moon Enceladus a high priority target for future exploration and a key to our developing understanding of icy ocean worlds. The structure of its outer ice shell is particularly important as it relates to the global heat budget, the global-scale response to tidal forces, and the nature of the ongoing eruptions. It is also diagnostic of how and where heat is dissipated internally. Here, using the most recent shape model and a new approach to modeling isostasy, we obtain a shell structure that simultaneously accommodates the shape, gravity, and libration observations and suggests that tidal dissipation near the base of the ice shell is likely an important mode of internal heating. Kinetic calcium isotope effects can be used as growth-rate proxies for volcanic and subvolcanic minerals. Here, we analyze Ca isotopic compositions in experimental and natural samples and confirm that large kinetic effects (>2?) can occur during magmatic plagioclase crystallization. Experiments confirm theoretical predictions that disequilibrium isotope effects depend mainly on the rates for crystal growth relative to liquid phase Ca diffusivity (R/D). Plagioclase phenocrysts from the 1915 Mount Lassen rhyodacite eruption, the ~650-y-old Deadman Creek Dome eruption, and several mafic subvolcanic orbicules and plagioclase comb layers from Northern California have disequilibrium Ca isotopic compositions that suggest rapid crystal growth rates (>1 cm/y to 15 cm/y). The Ca isotope results, combined with complementary crystal-size distribution analyses, suggest that magmatic rejuvenation (and eruption) events, as reflected in crystal growth times, can be as short as ~10-3 y. Although mafic systems are predicted to have shorter magmatic rejuvenation periods, we find similarly short timescales in both mafic and silicic systems. These results are consistent with a growing body of evidence suggesting that dominantly crystalline volcanic magma reservoirs can be rapidly reactivated by the injection of fresh magma prior to eruption. By focusing on a commonmineral such as plagioclase, this approach can be applied across all major magmatic compositions, suggesting that Ca isotopes can be used as a tool for investigating the dynamics and timing of volcanic eruptions. The loss of volatiles from a magma reservoir affects the magmatic overpressure responsible for driving ground deformation and eruptions. Although the high‐temperature metamorphic aureole around a magma chamber is typically considered to have low permeability, recent theoretical, experimental, and field studies have highlighted the role of transient permeability in magmatic systems. Also, direct measurements suggest that passive degassing is a significant component of total volatile loss in both basaltic and silicic volcanoes. Consequently, the effective permeability of the crust when magma is present in the system can be many orders of magnitude larger than that of exhumed rock samples. We develop a fully coupled porothermoelastic framework to account for both the flow of volatiles as well as associated effects on the stress state of the crust and calculate an analytical solution for spherical geometry. We then combine a magma chamber box model with these solutions to analyze eruption dynamics in magmatic systems. We find that in addition to viscous relaxation, magma recharge, and cooling timescales, the pore pressure diffusion timescale exerts a first‐order control on volcanic eruptions with moderately high crustal permeabilities of order 10−17 to 10−19 m2. We describe a parameter space to identify which components dominate in different regimes for volcanic eruptions according to these different timescales. Abstract More than 85% of the Earth's volcanism and geothermal heat release occurs underwater at mid-ocean ridges, intra-plate hotspots, and oceanic island arcs. However, we lack a clear understanding of how a submarine eruption interacts with the overlying water column, the structure of the submarine eruptive plume, and the transport of volcanic products in the ocean by these plumes. We describe here the detection of eruption-derived temperature increase and salinity decrease from the 2012 Havre submarine caldera eruption by an existing array of temperature/salinity profiling floats, known as Argo. The Argo floats observed the signal, significant at >3 sigma level with respect to the background ocean variability (noise), at ocean depths of ∼1750–2000 m deeper than the eruptive vent itself. In order to understand this signal, we develop a new conceptual submarine plume model which suggests that the sub-vent level temperature and salinity anomalies are caused by large-scale ocean mixing induced by the eruptive plume, rather than heating directly from the eruption. Using results from scaling analysis and a modified numerical plume-gravity current model, we show that submarine eruptions can efficiently advect water masses from the deep ocean closer to the surface and form multiple subsurface intrusions during the process. Consequently, the submarine eruptive plumes can initiate significant ocean mixing, a process with significant implications for both long- and short-term influence of submarine volcanism on ocean chemistry, dynamics, and ecology. Finally, our model confirms that a detectable anomaly would persist out to 100s of km from the eruption location, comparable to Argo's spatial sampling. Given the global ocean coverage and a decadal baseline, the Argo floats (and other similar datasets), in concert with hydrophone and seismic arrays, can provide significant new constraints on subaqueous volcanism, eruption dynamics, and the impact on Earth systems through enhanced ocean mixing and nutrient supply, e.g. during submarine Large Igneous Provinces. Deformation of all materials necessitates the collective propagation of various microscopic defects. On Earth, fracturing gives way to crystal-plastic deformation with increasing depth resulting in a "brittle-to-ductile" transition (BDT) region that is key for estimating the integrated strength of tectonic plates, constraining the earthquake cycle, and utilizing deep geothermal resources. Here, we show that the crossing of a BDT in marble during deformation experiments in the laboratory is accompanied by systematic increase in the frequency of acoustic emissions suggesting a profound change in the mean size and propagation velocity of the active defects. We further identify dominant classes of emitted waveforms using unsupervised learning methods and show that their relative activity systematically changes as the rocks cross the brittle-ductile transition. As pressure increases, long-period signals are suppressed and short-period signals become dominant. At higher pressures, signals frequently come in avalanche-like patterns. We propose that these classes of waveforms correlate with individual dominant defect types. Complex mixed-mode events indicate that interactions between the defects are common over the whole pressure range, in agreement with postmortem microstructural observations. Our measurements provide unique, real-time data of microscale dynamics over a broad range of pressures (10 to 200 MPa) and can inform micromechanical models for semi-brittle deformation. Noise control treatment is essential to maintain a quiet and comfortable environment in buildings. In order to control noise, sound absorbing materials play a significant role. Nowadays, natural materials have gained importance in noise control field. In this study, acoustical characterization of a natural material jute is performed using experimental and numerical techniques. Normal incidence sound absorption coefficient and sound transmission loss of building materials using jute are predicted using the transfer matrix method. Despite significant advancements in understanding crustal melt transport, determining the shallow magmatic architecture at any given volcanic system remains a significant challenge with geophysical methods alone. In this study, we present a new conceptual model combining previously studied models for geomechanical magma reservoirs and dyke-shaped conduits. Supplementary to previous work, we include a model for porous mush adjacent to a visco-elastic magma reservoir during the eruption. This addition enables physically consistent magma recharge into the elastic magma reservoir by porous flow instead of employing an arbitrary mantle magma recharge parameterization. We compare our conceptual model with an illustrative test case - the submarine 2018 Mayotte eruption in the Comoros Islands (∼6.55 km3 Bulk Rock Volume, ∼3.5 km water depth, ∼35 km estimated deep magma reservoir). We estimate a magma effusion rate history using a new continuous-time inversion of surface deformation data. A single magma reservoir cannot match the observed eruptive history for any reservoir geometry or crustal and magmatic material properties. However, the presence of a porous mush adjacent to the magma reservoir helps to reconcile the model with the observations. The additional magma flux from the mush region sustains the long eruption at a low effusion rate, as is observed off Mayotte, with a decreasing effusion rate after few months of eruptions and a low persistent effusion rate since then. The mush flow dynamics are a direct consequence of reduced pressure in the magma reservoir during the eruption. Thus, our model provides a parsimonious and physically motivated explanation of the Mayotte eruptive history. Since many historical basaltic eruptions worldwide, such as sometime observed at Piton de la Fournaise, Volcan Arenal, and Laki, have a similar effusion rate history shape as Mayotte, magmatic mushes may be a key component for explaining long-lived basaltic eruptions. Background: Sleep is an important factor affecting cognitive performance. Sleep deprivation results in fatigue, lack of concentration, confusion and sleepiness along with anxiety, depression and irritability. Sleep deprivation can have serious consequences in professions like armed forces and medicine where quick decisions and actions need to be taken. Color-Word Stroop task is one of the reliable tests to assess attention and it analyzes the processing of information in two dimensions i.e., reading of words and naming of colour. The evidence regarding the effect of sleep deprivation on Stroop interference is conflicting. The present study evaluated the effect of 24 hours of sleep deprivation on reaction time and interference in Stroop task. Materials and Methods: The present study was done on 30 healthy male medical student volunteers in the age group of 18-25 years after taking their consent and clearance from Institute Ethics Committee. Recordings of Stroop task were at three times: baseline (between 7-9 am), after 12 hours (7-9 pm) and after 24 hours (7-9 am, next day). The subjects were allowed to perform normal daily activities. Results: The study revealed a significant increase in reaction time after 24 hours of sleep deprivation in comparison to baseline and after 12 hours of sleep deprivation. There was no significant change in interference and facilitation after sleep deprivation in comparison to baseline. The number of errors also did not show any significant change after sleep deprivation. Conclusion: The study indicated that there was slowing of responses without change in executive functions after 24 hours of sleep deprivation. It is probable that 24 hours of sleep deprivation does not bring about change in areas of brain affecting executive functions in healthy individuals who have normal sleep cycle. The present study indicated that in professions like armed forces and medicine working 24 hours at a stretch can lead to decrease in motor responses without affecting information processing and judgment ability. During the Spitzer Space Telescope cryogenic mission, astronomers obtained Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of hundreds of debris disk candidates that have been compiled in the Spitzer IRS Debris Disk Catalog. We have discovered 10 and/or 20 µm silicate emission features toward 120 targets in the catalog and modeled the IRS spectra of these sources, consistent with MIPS 70 µm observations, assuming that the grains are composed of silicates (olivine, pyroxene, forsterite, and enstatite) and are located either in a continuous disk with power-law size and surface density distributions or thin rings that are well-characterized using two separate dust grain temperatures. For systems better fit by the continuous disk model, we find that (1) the dust size distribution power-law index is consistent with that expected from a collisional cascade, q = 3.5-4.0, with a large number of values outside this range, and (2) the minimum grain size, amin, increases with stellar luminosity, L*, but the dependence of amin on L* is weaker than expected from radiation pressure alone. In addition, we also find that (3) the crystalline fraction of dust in debris disks evolves as a function of time with a large dispersion in crystalline fractions for stars of any particular stellar age or mass, (4) the disk inner edge is correlated with host star mass, and (5) there exists substantial variation in the properties of coeval disks in Sco-Cen, indicating that the observed variation is probably due to stochasticity and diversity in planet formation. Establishing individuality is an imperative aspect in any investigation procedure. At times, it becomes necessary to determine the sex of the individual to establish identity, and saliva stains found at the scene of crime are of major help in such cases. In the present study, we have determined the sex of the individual from buccal mucosal scrapings. Buccal smears prepared from 100 men and 100 women were stained by the Papanicolaou staining method. Cells were observed for Barr bodies under oil immersion with a compound microscope, and the percentage of Barr-body-positive cells was determined. It was observed that 1.14% of buccal mucosal cells in men (range = 0–4%) and 39.29% of buccal mucosal cells in women (range = 20–78%) showed Barr bodies. Inferences from the study show that the presence of Barr body in buccal mucosal cells can be demonstrated with a fair degree of accuracy using Papanicolaou staining. The sex of the individual can be determined accurately, as two non-overlapping ranges for the percentage of Barr-body-positive cells has been obtained for men and women. On 15 January 2022, Hunga volcano erupted, creating an extensive and high-reaching umbrella cloud over the open ocean, hindering traditional isopach mapping and fallout volume estimation. In MODIS satellite imagery, ocean surface water was discolored around Hunga following the eruption, which we attribute to ash fallout from the umbrella cloud. By relating intensity of ocean discoloration to fall deposit thicknesses in the Kingdom of Tonga, we develop a methodology for estimating airfall volume over the open ocean. Ash thickness measurements from 41 locations are used to fit a linear relationship between ash thickness and ocean reflectance. This produces a minimum airfall volume estimate of 1.8 - 0.4 + 0.3 km3. The whole eruption produced > 6.3 km3 of uncompacted pyroclastic material on the seafloor and a caldera volume change of 6 km3 DRE. Our fall estimates are consistent with the interpretation that most of the seafloor deposits were emplaced by gravity currents rather than fall deposits. Our proposed method does not account for the largest grain sizes, so is thus a minimum estimate. However, this new ocean-discoloration method provides an airfall volume estimate consistent with other independent measures of the plume and is thus effective for rapidly estimating fallout volumes in future volcanic eruptions over oceans. High‐temperature–low‐pressure metamorphism is commonly associated with intermediate to felsic magmatism in continental orogenic belts. The heat budgets and transfer mechanisms responsible for such elevated temperatures and partial melting of the upper crust are uncertain. The Trois Seigneurs massif, French Pyrenees, preserves a structurally continuous record of Variscan high‐temperature–low‐pressure metamorphism through a sequence of upper‐to‐mid‐crustal Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks. Conventional thermobarometry and phase equilibria calculations show that metamorphic conditions span ~2.5 kbar, 575°C to suprasolidus conditions of ~6 kbar, 700°C. Peak temperatures depend strongly on depth: temperature gradients of 50–60°C/km are present through the uppermost 12 km of the section; deeper portions (12–20 km) define restricted temperature conditions of ~650–700°C. The lowest‐grade metamorphic rocks preserve the largest spread in monazite 206Pb*/238U dates, from c. 325–285 Ma, while the spread in dates is restricted to c. 305–290 Ma in the highest‐grade rocks. Within this spread, each sample yields a well‐defined population of monazite 206Pb*/238U dates with peaks at c. 305 Ma in the andalusite schists, 295 Ma in the sillimanite schists, and 300 Ma in the migmatite sample. Monazite trace‐element compositions capture a systematic change with decreasing date and increasing metamorphic grade, including a more negative Eu‐anomaly and decreasing Sr concentrations, consistent with co‐crystallizing feldspar; increasing HREE and Y contents, consistent with xenotime breakdown; and decreasing Th/U, reflecting increasing U content during breakdown of inherited zircon. Zircon rims from a granite unit that formed via partial melting of the Paleozoic sedimentary package yields a 206Pb/238U‐207Pb/235U concordia age of 304.1 ± 3.73 Ma. These rims have trace‐element compositions reflecting cogenetic apatite and zircon growth during granite formation. Zircon from a calc‐alkaline granodiorite intrusion preserves a 40 Ma record of melt‐related activity in the lower crust that preceded the regional thermal climax. We interpret these petrochronological data to show that the Trois Seigneurs field gradient including andalusite schist and biotite granite samples represents a genuine geotherm through Variscan orogenic crust during the regional thermal climax at 305 Ma. When combined with constraints from other Pyrenean massifs, the form of the geotherm is consistent with a thermal scenario in which heat is advected to the upper crust by intermediate‐composition magmas generated in the lower crust. A simple thermal model for this process indicates that anatexis in the upper crust may plausibly occur within 10 Ma of the initiation of the lower‐crustal melting. Such a thermal scenario, however, requires focusing of melt through a fertile lower crust and an elevated Moho heat flux. We suggest that this process may have controlled the attainment of high‐temperature–low‐pressure metamorphic conditions along the Variscan belt and may currently be operating in zones of post‐orogenic continental extension. Earth has had a global magnetic field for at least 3.5 billion years, but if the iron-alloy in the core has high conductivity, it is difficult to explain this duration with energy from cooling and inner-core growth alone. Precipitation of light elements (e.g., magnesium, silicon, and oxygen) from Earth's core is a potential alternative energy source to power the dynamo. We develop a new framework of coupled thermo-chemical evolution of the Earth to consider precipitation of multiple light components from the core and their interaction with the overlying mantle layer. The precipitated material accumulates in a layer at the base of the mantle which is then continuously eroded by mantle convection. We allow the precipitation of three species (MgO, FeO, and SiO 2), including their interactions not considered by most previous studies. We find that MgO, SiO 2 , and FeO precipitation may each dominate entropy production depending on the choice of equilibrium constants and initial model states and that the three species together can explain the duration of Earth's magnetic field across a range of plausible scenarios. Over the Earth's history, we find that the core can lose ∼1–2 wt% silicon and oxygen suggesting that light precipitation is potentially an important process for the core compositional evolution and core-mantle chemical exchange. Additionally, our results show that precipitation does not, in most cases, have a systematic influence on the timing of inner-core nucleation or magnitude of the resulting paleomagnetic signal with inner-core nucleation typically around 550 Mya. Deccan Traps continental flood basalt eruptions spanned the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction, erupting over a million cubic kilometers of basalt over a total duration of approximately a million years. The environmental consequences of flood basalt eruptions depend on the timing and amount of volatile release; eruption rates are thus needed to evaluate their potential to cause climate change. Radioisotopic dates are not currently sufficient to resolve sub-ten thousand year eruptive tempos, necessary for constraining the effects of short-lifetime volatiles including sulfur dioxide. Recent studies have demonstrated that increases in mercury concentration in sedimentary records correlate with flood basalt eruptions under some circumstances. However, mercury concentrations have primarily been used to show the presence or absence of flood basalt eruptions. We show that this proxy can be used to quantitatively estimate eruptive rates using a mercury geochemical cycle framework. We illustrate this using new mercury chemostratigraphic records from terrestrial Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary sections in eastern Montana, USA, with multiple high-resolution chronologic constraints. We estimate that Deccan eruptions lasted on the order of centuries and released 500–3000 megagrams (Mg) of mercury per year, corresponding to ∼50–250 km3/a of lava. The box model framework highlights the importance of carefully accounting for differences in sedimentation rate and sampling resolution when comparing mercury records from different locations and depositional environments. While there are uncertainties in the box model estimates due to possible variation in flood basalt mercury emissions and sedimentation rates, they provide a useful framework to quantitatively evaluate the global mercury budget change indicated by changing concentration in sedimentary records. Eruptions of the estimated size would have released enough SO 2 , if it reached the stratosphere, to cause significant cooling for the duration of the eruption. Individual lava flows in flood basalt provinces are composed of sheet pāhoehoe lobes and the 10–100 m thick lobes are thought to form by inflation. Quantifying the emplacement history of these lobes can help infer the magnitude and temporal dynamics of prehistoric eruptions. Here we use a phase‐field model to describe solidification and remelting of sequentially emplaced lava lobes to explore additional processes that may lead to thick flows and lobes. We calibrate parameters using field measurements at Makaopuhi lava lake. We vary the lobe thicknesses and the time interval between eruptions to study the interplay between these factors and their impact on the thermal evolution of flows. Our analysis shows that if the time between emplacements is sufficiently short, remelting may merge sequentially emplaced lobes—making lava flows appear thicker than they actually were—which suggests that fused lobes could be another mechanism that creates apparently thick lava flows. We analyse two representative rubbly pāhoehoe lavas (F3 and F5) from drill cores at Tural-Rajwadi, southwest of Koyna, in the southern Deccan Traps. Low vesicle deformation (0.1 to 0.4) indicates that both lavas ultimately cooled under a low-stress regime. The crystal size distributions (CSDs) of most samples from F5 (especially those from within the core) are not linear but instead show kinks. These kinks are attributed to a rise in plagioclase nucleation due to degassing following the brecciation of the crust. Since it is difficult to constrain cooling time for ancient lava flows, we used the products of nucleation rates (Jt, 1.64 × 10–8 to 1.45 × 10–5 μm−3) and growth rates (Gt, 2.1 to 156 μm) with time. When compared with natural analogues as well as experimental results for basalt crystallisation, these values suggest a much faster lava cooling rate (~ 1 to 7℃/hr) than a conductive cooling model (≤ 0.1 ℃/hr). The CSDs for F3 fan with depth suggesting that the lava flow might represent local accumulation (ponding?) in a transitional lava flow field. CSDs for F5 show little variation with depth, with the exception of kinks for samples from the lower crust and core. The relatively higher number density of plagioclase microcrysts in our rubbly pāhoehoe (F5) and their CSD patterns are similar to those measured for transitional lavas from Hawaii. The vesicle data and CSDs indicate that brittle deformation was the primary mode of transition within these lavas. Identifying occurrence of thick ponded lavas within vertical stacks of rubbly pāhoehoe flows in the upper stratigraphic levels of the Deccan Traps are critically important as they demonstrate complex cooling styles, crystallisation histories, and emplacement dynamics. Transitional lavas such as rubbly pāhoehoe are important components of large CFB provinces such as the Deccan Traps and constitute nearly 46 to 85% of all lava types. Modelling of continental flood basalt provinces should therefore account for these diversities within lavas, and any oversimplified version using end-member morphotypes is unrealistic and untenable. The 12 August 2021 eruption of Fukutoku-Oka-no-Ba, a shallow submarine volcano in the Izu-Bonin arc of Japan, is one of few documented submarine eruptions to make a large aerial plume and floating pumice raft. Relative to past eruptions, this event was well-covered by multiple high resolution satellite remote sensors, raising the possibility of resolving important questions about the timing of raft and plume formation, and their relationship. Here we use satellite remote sensing to assess the eruption timeline, style, rates, and products. We use the Himawari-8 satellite to assess the plume volume flux and height through time. In addition, we use a combination of ultra-high resolution satellite imagery to assess the timing and mechanisms of raft formation. We find that the 16 km eruption plume was ice-rich and conclude that the 0.1 km3 raft and eruption plume were co-genetic. Finally, we suggest that pumice clasts were delivered to the raft by tephra jets, ballistics, and near-vent fallout from the plume. Frictional properties affect the propagation of high-amplitude seismic waves across rock fractures and faults. Laboratory evidence suggests that these properties can be measured in active seismic surveys, potentially offering a route to characterizing friction in situ. We present experimental results from a subresonance torsional modulus and attenuation apparatus that utilizes micron-scale sinusoidal oscillations to probe the nonlinear stress-strain relation at a range of strain amplitudes and rates. Nonlinear effects are further quantified using harmonic distortion; however, time series data best illuminate underlying physical processes. The low-frequency stress-strain hysteretic loops show stiffening at the sinusoid's static ends, but stiffening is reduced above a threshold frequency. This shape is determined by harmonic generation in the strain; the stress signal has no harmonics, confirming that the fractured sample is the source of the nonlinearity. These qualitative observations suggest the presence of rate-dependent friction and are consistent between fractures in three different rock types. We propose that static friction at the low strain rate part of the cycle, when given sufficient 'healing' time at low oscillation frequencies, causes this stiffening cusp shape in the hysteresis loop. While rate-and-state friction is commonly used to represent dynamic friction, it cannot capture static friction or negative slip velocities. So we implement another dynamic friction model, based on the work of Dahl, which describes this process and produces similar results. Since the two models have a similar form, parameterizations of field data could constraint fault model inputs, such as specific location velocity strengthening or weakening properties. While β Pic is known to host silicates in ring-like structures, whether the properties of these silicate dust vary with stellocentric distance remains an open question. We re-analyze the β Pictoris debris disk spectrum from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) and a new Infrared Telescope Facility Spectrograph and Imager spectrum to investigate trends in Fe/Mg ratio, shape, and crystallinity in grains as a function of wavelength, a proxy for stellocentric distance. By analyzing a re-calibrated and re-extracted spectrum, we identify a new 18 ÎĽ m forsterite emission feature and recover a 23 ÎĽ m forsterite emission feature with a substantially larger line-to-continuum ratio than previously reported. We find that these prominent spectral features are primarily produced by small submicron-sized grains, which are continuously generated and replenished from planetesimal collisions in the disk and can elucidate their parent bodies’ composition. We discover three trends about these small grains: as stellocentric distance increases, (1) small silicate grains become more crystalline (less amorphous), (2) they become more irregular in shape, and (3) for crystalline silicate grains, the Fe/Mg ratio decreases. Applying these trends to β Pic’s planetary architecture, we find that the dust population exterior to the orbits of β Pic b and c differs substantially in crystallinity and shape. We also find a tentative 3â€"5 ÎĽ m dust excess due to spatially unresolved hot dust emission close to the star. From our findings, we infer that the surfaces of large planetesimals are more Fe-rich and collisionally processed closer to the star but more Fe-poor and primordial farther from the star. On the 7 August 2019, a 195 km2 raft of andesitic pumice was produced at 200 m below sea level at an unnamed submarine volcano in the Tonga Islands (Southwest Pacific Ocean). Drifting chiefly westward, the raft reached the Fiji Islands on the 19 September. Yachts that crossed the raft as early as 2 days post‐eruption provided an outstanding data set of raft characteristics and pristine samples. Further, exceptional tracking of raft dispersal by satellite images allows us to contrast virtual particle tracking methods with ocean model currents to explore the relative influence of surface currents, wind, and wave action on pumice flotsam dispersal over up to 2 years. Attenuation of ocean waves by large and compact pumice rafts appears to reduce the effect of Stokes drift. The coupling of real‐time satellite observations with oceanographic Lagrangian simulations allows near‐real time forecasting for global maritime hazard mitigation. Plain Language Summary: Although 70% of volcanism occurs underwater, submarine eruptions are seldom witnessed owing to their remoteness and absence of technologies enabling their detection. On the 7 August 2019, a submarine volcanic eruption 200 m below sea level in the Tonga Islands formed a 195 km2 pumice raft. The raft was first encountered and sampled by yacht crews, and is visible on satellite images. Pumice rafts are dispersed by ocean currents, wind, and waves, and can cross entire oceans or get stranded on coasts. After 7 weeks of dispersal, the pumice raft reached the Fiji Islands, and a fraction continued its westward route toward Vanuatu and eastern Australia. Excellent imaging of the raft by satellites permitted reconstruction of daily raft dispersal for the first 8 weeks. Here we show that drift calculations, including components of ocean current, wind, and wave action, can usefully forecast raft dispersal. We tested and tuned these drift calculations by comparing the simulated drift with daily satellite images of the raft. Further, a combination of satellite images and drift calculations based on oceanographic models were used for maritime hazard mitigation in near‐real time. Calcium isotope data (δ 44 Ca , μ 42 / 44 Ca , and μ 48 / 44 Ca) are reported for high-temperature metamorphic rocks and minerals, and compared with density-functional theory (DFT) estimates of equilibrium Ca isotope fractionation factors for plagioclase, garnet, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, and apatite. The data and calculations are used to evaluate equilibrium and kinetic fractionation effects that apply to high-temperature metamorphism, where extended residence at high temperature should promote equilibration, but where centimeter-to-meter scale Ca transport could produce diffusive kinetic effects. At upper-granulite facies conditions (T ≥ ∼900 °C), DFT-predicted equilibrium fractionations between minerals are ≤0.8‰, decreasing to ca. 0.6‰ at 1100 °C. We find much larger δ 44 Ca variations in both whole-rock samples (range of ∼4‰) and individual minerals (range of ∼8‰), and large variations in the Ca isotope fractionation between mineral pairs (e.g. Δ 44 Ca grt-plag from −1.5 to +1.5‰). Deviations from equilibrium tend to be larger in concert with indications of higher temperature, such as increasing whole-rock Mg#, plagioclase anorthite content, orthopyroxene Ca/Mg, and garnet Mg#. These large variations are inferred to be due to intragranular or grain-boundary diffusion during metamorphism, as this is the only mechanism that can produce such large isotopic variations. We can confirm the kinetic origin of the variations using measurements of μ 48 / 44 Ca by MC-ICP-MS to distinguish kinetic from equilibrium fractionation processes using a triple-isotope approach. A new variable (Δ 48 Ca ′) quantifies deviations from the Ca-isotope equilibrium slope on a plot of 48Ca/44Ca vs. 42Ca/44Ca. Available geochronological constraints and numerical modeling indicate that observed kinetic isotope fractionations between adjacent high and low Ca rock layers require effective Ca diffusivities of 10−10 to 10−7 m2/yr, and a ratio of Ca isotope diffusivities of D 44 / D 40 ≈ 0.99. The diffusivities are consistent with Ca transport by volume- and grain-boundary diffusion. The apparent contrast in isotopic diffusivities is large and more consistent with silicate liquids than aqueous fluids. This study confirms that kinetic Ca isotope effects are abundant in nature and can overwrite small equilibrium effects, even at high temperatures and even when other techniques (such as Fe-Mg exchange and Ca-in-Opx thermometry) suggest the establishment of chemical equilibrium. Our results imply that kinetic fractionation effects may complicate the use of δ 44 Ca measurements for geothermometry or as a tracer of carbonate recycling into the mantle. • At high temperatures (>900 °C), equilibrium Δ 44 Ca fractionations do not exceed 0.8‰. • Lower-crustal rocks and minerals have δ 44 Ca ranges of 4‰ and 8‰, respectively. • A triple-isotope approach (Δ 48 Ca ′) can distinguish kinetic from equilibrium effects. • Grain boundary/volume diffusion lead to kinetic isotope effects in the lower crust. • Fluids attending granulite-facies metamorphism are likely to be silicate melts. Late Cretaceous records of environmental change suggest that Deccan Traps (DT) volcanism contributed to the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (KPB) ecosystem crisis. However, testing this hypothesis requires identification of the KPB in the DT. We constrain the location of the KPB with high-precision argon-40/argon-39 data to be coincident with changes in the magmatic plumbing system. We also found that the DT did not erupt in three discrete large pulses and that 90% of DT volume erupted in 1 million years, with ~75% emplaced post-KPB. Late Cretaceous records of climate change coincide temporally with the eruption of the smallest DT phases, suggesting that either the release of climate-modifying gases is not directly related to eruptive volume or DT volcanism was not the source of Late Cretaceous climate change.
