Search

We have learnt in the last decades that the majority of galaxies belong to high density regions interconnected in a sponge-like fashion. This large-scale structure is characterised by clusters, filaments, walls, where most galaxies concentrate, but also under-dense regions, called voids. The void regions and the galaxies within represent an ideal place for the study of galaxy formation and evolution as they are largely unaffected by the complex physical processes that transform galaxies in high-density environments. These void galaxies can hold the key as well to answer current challenges to the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. The Calar Alto Void Integral-field Treasury surveY (CAVITY) is a Legacy project approved by the Calar Alto Observatory to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopic information of $\sim300$ void galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005 < z < 0.050) covering from -17.0 to -21.5 in $\rm r$ band absolute magnitude. It officially started in January 2021 and has been awarded 110 useful dark observing nights at the 3.5 m telescope using the PMAS spectrograph. Complementary follow-up projects including deep optical imaging, integrated, as well as resolved CO data, and integrated HI spectra, have joint the PMAS observations and naturally complete the scientific aim of characterising galaxies in cosmic voids. The extension data has been denominated CAVITY+. The data will be available to the whole community in different data releases, the first of which is planned for July 2024, and it will provide the community with PMAS data cubes for around 100 void galaxies through a user friendly, and well documented, database platform. We present here the survey, sample selection, data reduction, quality control schemes, science goals, and some examples of the scientific power of the CAVITY and CAVITY+ data., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. Context. The present study addresses a key question related to our understanding of the relation between void galaxies and their environment: the relationship between luminous and dark matter in and around voids. Aims. To explore the extent to which local Universe voids are empty of matter, we study the full (dark+luminous) matter content of seven nearby cosmic voids that are fully contained within the CosmicFlows-3 volume. Methods. We obtained the matter-density profiles of seven cosmic voids using two independent methods. These were built from the galaxy redshift space two-point correlation function in conjunction with peculiar velocity gradients from the CosmicFlows-3 dataset. Results. The results are striking, because when the redshift survey is used, all voids show a radial positive gradient of galaxies, while based on the dynamical analysis, only three of these voids display a clear underdensity of matter in their center. Conclusions. This work constitutes the most detailed observational analysis of voids conducted so far, and shows that void emptiness should be derived from dynamical information. We present ALMA CO(1-0) observations toward the dust lane of the nearest elliptical and radio galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), with high angular resolution ($\sim$ 1 arcsec, or 18 pc), including information from large to small spatial scales and total flux. We find a total molecular gas mass of 1.6$\times$10$^9$ $M_\odot$ and we reveal the presence of filamentary components more extended than previously seen, up to a radius of 4 kpc. We find that the global star formation rate is $\sim$1 \Msol yr$^{-1}$, which yields a star formation efficiency (SFE) of 0.6 Gyr$^{-1}$ (depletion time $\tau =$1.5 Gyr), similar to those in disk galaxies. We show the most detailed view to date (40\,pc resolution) of the relation between molecular gas and star formation within the stellar component of an elliptical galaxy, from several kpc scale to the circumnuclear region close to the powerful radio jet. Although on average the SFEs are similar to those of spiral galaxies, the circumnuclear disk (CND) presents SFEs of 0.3 Gyr$^{-1}$, lower by a factor of 4 than the outer disk. The low SFE in the CND is in contrast to the high SFEs found in the literature for the circumnuclear regions of some nearby disk galaxies with nuclear activity, probably as a result of larger shear motions and longer AGN feedback. The higher SFEs in the outer disk suggests that only central molecular gas or filaments with sufficient density and strong shear motions will remain in $\sim$1 Gyr, which will later result in the compact molecular distributions and low SFEs usually seen in other giant ellipticals with cold gas., Comment: Minor update. 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Mergers of galaxies are an important mode for galaxy evolution because they serve as an efficient trigger of powerful starbursts. However, observational studies of the molecular gas properties during their early stages are scarce. We present interferometric CO(2-1) maps of two luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), NGC 3110 and NGC 232, obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) with ~ 1 kpc resolution. While NGC 3110 is a spiral galaxy interacting with a minor (14:1 stellar mass) companion, NGC 232 is interacting with a similarly sized object. We find that such interactions have likely induced in these galaxies enhancements in the molecular gas content and central concentrations, partly at the expense of atomic gas. The obtained molecular gas surface densities in their circumnuclear regions are $\Sigma_{\rm mol}~\gtrsim10^{2.5}$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$, higher than in non-interacting objects by an order of magnitude. Gas depletion times of ~ 0.5 - 1 Gyr are found for the different regions, lying in between non-interacting disk galaxies and the starburst sequence. In the case of NGC 3110, the spiral arms show on average 0.5 dex shorter depletion times than in the circumnuclear regions if we assume a similar H$_2$-CO conversion factor. We show that even in the early stages of the interaction with a minor companion, a starburst is formed along the circumnuclear region and spiral arms, where a large population of SSCs is found (~350), and at the same time a large central gas concentration is building up which might be the fuel for an active galactic nucleus. The main morphological properties of the NGC 3110 system are reproduced by our numerical simulations and allow us to estimate that the current epoch of the interaction is at ~ 150 Myrs after closest approach., Comment: 30 pages. We use Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of H30$\alpha$ (231.90 GHz) emission from the low metallicity dwarf galaxy NGC 5253 to measure the star formation rate (SFR) within the galaxy and to test the reliability of SFRs derived from other commonly-used metrics. The H30$\alpha$ emission, which originates mainly from the central starburst, yields a photoionizing photon production rate of (1.9$\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{52}$ s$^{-1}$ and an SFR of 0.087$\pm$0.013 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ based on conversions that account for the low metallicity of the galaxy and for stellar rotation. Among the other star formation metrics we examined, the SFR calculated from the total infrared flux was statistically equivalent to the values from the H30$\alpha$ data. The SFR based on previously-published versions of the H$\alpha$ flux that were extinction corrected using Pa$\alpha$ and Pa$\beta$ lines were lower than but also statistically similar to the H30$\alpha$ value. The mid-infrared (22 $\mu$m) flux density and the composite star formation tracer based on H$\alpha$ and mid-infrared emission give SFRs that were significantly higher because the dust emission appears unusually hot compared to typical spiral galaxies. Conversely, the 70 and 160 $\mu$m flux densities yielded SFR lower than the H30$\alpha$ value, although the SFRs from the 70 $\mu$m and H30$\alpha$ data were within 1-2$\sigma$ of each other. While further analysis on a broader range of galaxies are needed, these results are instructive of the best and worst methods to use when measuring SFR in low metallicity dwarf galaxies like NGC 5253., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND, 400 pc x 200 pc) of Centaurus A with resolutions of ~5 pc (0.3 arcsec) and shed light onto the mechanism feeding the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) using CO(3-2), HCO+(4-3), HCN(4-3), and CO(6-5) observations obtained with ALMA. Multiple filaments or streamers of tens to a hundred parsec scale exist within the CND, which form a ring-like structure with an unprojected diameter of 9 x 6 arcsec (162pc x 108pc) and a position angle PA = 155deg. Inside the nuclear ring, there are two leading and straight filamentary structures with lengths of about 30-60pc at PA = 120deg on opposite sides of the AGN, with a rotational symmetry of 180deg and steeper position-velocity diagrams, which are interpreted as nuclear shocks due to non-circular motions. Along the filaments, and unlike other nearby AGNs, several dense molecular clumps present low HCN/HCO+(4-3) ratios (~0.5). The filaments abruptly end in the probed transitions at r = 20pc from the AGN, but previous near-IR H2 (J=1-0) S(1) maps show that they continue in an even ~1000 K), winding up in the form of nuclear spirals, and forming an inner ring structure with another set of symmetric filaments along the N-S direction and within r = 10pc. The molecular gas is governed primarily by non-circular motions, being the successive shock fronts at different scales where loss of angular momentum occurs, a mechanism which may feed efficiently powerful radio galaxies down to parsec scales., Comment: 46 pages. A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz. We investigate the use of guided modes bound to defects in photonic crystals for achieving double resonances. Photoluminescence enhancement by more than three orders of magnitude has been observed when the excitation and emission wavelengths are simultaneously in resonance with the localized guided mode and cavity mode, respectively. We find that the localized guided modes are relatively insensitive to the size of the defect for one of the polarizations, allowing for flexible control over the wavelength combinations. This double resonance technique is expected to enable enhancement of photoluminescence and nonlinear wavelength conversion efficiencies in a wide variety of systems., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

We report on high efficency coupling of individual air-suspended carbon nanotubes to silicon photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. Photoluminescence images of dielectric- and air-mode cavities reflect their distinctly different mode profiles and show that fields in the air are important for coupling. We find that the air-mode cavities couple more efficiently, and estimated spontaneous emission coupling factors reach a value as high as 0.85. Our results demonstrate advantages of ultralow mode-volumes in air-mode cavities for coupling to low-dimensional nanoscale emitters., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Single-walled carbon nanotubes have advantages as a nanoscale light source compatible with silicon photonics because they show room-temperature luminescence at telecom-wavelengths and can be directly synthesized on silicon substrates. Here we demonstrate integration of individual light-emitting carbon nanotubes with silicon microdisk resonators. Photons emitted from nanotubes are efficiently coupled to whispering gallery modes, circulating within the disks and lighting up their perimeters. Furthermore, we control such emission by tuning the excitation wavelength in and out of resonance with higher order modes in the same disk. Our results open up the possibilities of using nanotube emitters embedded in photonic circuits that are individually addressable through spectral double resonance., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The properties of tidally induced arms provide a means to study molecular cloud formation and the subsequent star formation under environmental conditions which in principle are different from quasi stationary spiral arms. We report the properties of a newly discovered molecular gas arm of likely tidal origin at the south of NGC 4039 and the overlap region in the Antennae galaxies, with a resolution of 1"68 x 0"85, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array science verification CO(2-1) data. The arm extends 3.4 kpc (34") and is characterized by widths of ~ 200 pc (2") and velocity widths of typically \DeltaV ~ 10-20 km/s . About 10 clumps are strung out along this structure, most of them unresolved, with average surface densities of \Sigma_gas ~ 10-100 Msun pc^{-2}, and masses of (1-8) x 10^6 Msun. These structures resemble the morphology of beads on a string, with an almost equidistant separation between the beads of about 350 pc, which may represent a characteristic separation scale for giant molecular associations. We find that the star formation efficiency at a resolution of 6" (600 pc) is in general a factor of 10 higher than in disk galaxies and other tidal arms and bridges. This arm is linked, based on the distribution and kinematics, to the base of the western spiral arm of NGC 4039, but its morphology is different to that predicted by high-resolution simulations of the Antennae galaxies., Comment: Accepted in ApJL, 8 pages, 5 figures

We present wide-field 1.1 mm continuum imaging of the nearby spiral galaxy M 33, conducted with the AzTEC bolometer camera on ASTE. We show that the 1.1 mm flux traces the distribution of dust with T ~20 K. Combined with far-infrared imaging at 160um, we derive the dust temperature distribution out to a galactic radius of ~7 kpc with a spatial resolution of ~100 parsecs. Although the 1.1 mm flux is observed predominantly near star forming regions, we find a smooth radial temperature gradient declining from ~20 K to ~13 K, consistent with recent results from the Herschel satellite. Further comparison of individual regions show a strong correlation between the cold dust temperature and the Ks band brightness, but not with the ionizing flux. The observed results imply that the dominant heating source of cold dust at few hundred parsec scales are due to the non-OB stars, even when associated with star forming regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ

We present CO(3-2) emission observations toward the 3'x3' (or 20x20kpc at a distance of 23Mpc) region of the southern barred spiral galaxy NGC 986 using the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). This effort is a part of our on-going extragalactic CO(3-2) imaging project ADIoS (ASTE Dense gas Imaging of Spiral galaxies). Our CO(3-2) image revealed the presence of a large (the major axis is 14 kpc in total length) gaseous bar filled with dense molecular medium along the dark lanes observed in optical images. This is the largest ``dense-gas rich bar'' known to date. The dense gas bar discovered in NGC 986 could be a huge reservoir of possible ``fuel'' for future starbursts in the central region, and we suggest that the star formation in the central region of NGC 986 could still be in a growing phase. We found a good spatial coincidence between the overall distributions of dense molecular gas traced by CO(3-2) and the massive star formation depicted by H$\alpha$. The global CO(3-2) luminosity $L'_{\rm CO(3-2)}$ of NGC 986 was determined to be $(5.4 \pm 1.1) \times 10^8$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$. The CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) integrated intensity ratio was found to be 0.60 +/- 0.13 at a spatial resolution of 44'' or 5 kpc, and a CO(3-2)/CO(2-1) ratio was 0.67 +/- 0.14 at a beam size of ~25'' or ~2.8 kpc. These line ratios suggest moderate excitation conditions of CO lines ($n_{\rm H_2} \sim 10^{3-4}$ cm$^{-3}$) in the central a few kpc region of NGC 986., Comment: PASJ, in press. We report the discovery of a high CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) ratio gas with an arc-like distribution (``high-ratio gas arc'') surrounding the central star cluster of the supergiant HII region NGC 604 in the nearby spiral galaxy M 33, based on multi-J CO observations of a 5' $\times$ 5' region of NGC 604 conducted using the ASTE 10-m and NRO 45-m telescopes. The discovered ``high-ratio gas arc'' extends to the south-east to north-west direction with a size of $\sim$ 200 pc. The western part of the high-ratio gas arc closely coincides well with the shells of the HII regions traced by H$\alpha$ and radio continuum peaks. The CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) ratio, R_{3-2/1-0}, ranges between 0.3 and 1.2 in the observed region, and the R_{3-2/1-0} values of the high-ratio gas arc are around or higher than unity, indicating very warm (T_kin > 60 K) and dense (n(H_2) > 10^{3-4} cm^{-3}) conditions of the high-ratio gas arc. We suggest that the dense gas formation and second-generation star formation occur in the surrounding gas compressed by the stellar wind and/or supernova of the first-generation stars of NGC 604, i.e., the central star cluster of NGC 604., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.
