BACKGROUND: Patients with systolic heart failure and anemia have worse symptoms, functional capacity, and outcomes than those without anemia. We evaluated the effects of darbepoetin alfa on clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and anemia. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind trial, we assigned 2278 patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia (hemoglobin level, 9.0 to 12.0 g per deciliter) to receive either darbepoetin alfa (to achieve a hemoglobin target of 13 g per deciliter) or placebo. The primary outcome was a composite of death from any cause or hospitalization for worsening heart failure. RESULTS: The primary outcome occurred in 576 of 1136 patients (50.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 565 of 1142 patients (49.5%) in the placebo group (hazard ratio in the darbepoetin alfa group, 1.01; 95% confidence interval, 0.90 to 1.13; P=0.87). There was no significant between-group difference in any of the secondary outcomes. The neutral effect of darbepoetin alfa was consistent across all prespecified subgroups. Fatal or nonfatal stroke occurred in 42 patients (3.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 31 patients (2.7%) in the placebo group (P=0.23). Thromboembolic adverse events were reported in 153 patients (13.5%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 114 patients (10.0%) in the placebo group (P=0.01). Cancer-related adverse events were similar in the two study groups. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with darbepoetin alfa did not improve clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia. Our findings do not support the use of darbepoetin alfa in these patients. (Funded by Amgen; RED-HF ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00358215.). Fil: Swedberg, Karl. Low-thickness La0.66Sr0.34MnO3/BiFeO3 (BFO) thin film samples deposited on SrTiO3 were imaged by high resolution x-ray microscopy at different temperatures. The ultra-thin thickness of the top layer allows to image both the ferromagnetic domain structure of LSMO and the multiferroic domain structure of the buried BFO layer, opening a path to a direct observation of coupling at the interface on a microscopic level. By comparing the domain size and structure of the BFO and LSMO, we observed that, in contrast to LSMO single layers, LSMO/BFO multilayers show a strong temperature dependence of the ferromagnetic domain structure of the LSMO. Particularly, at 40 K, a similar domain size for BFO and LSMO is observed. This indicates a persistence of exchange coupling on the microscopic scale at a temperature, where the exchange bias as determined by magnetometer measurements is vanishing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disorders of mineral metabolism, including secondary hyperparathyroidism, are thought to contribute to extraskeletal (including vascular) calcification among patients with chronic kidney disease. It has been hypothesized that treatment with the calcimimetic agent cinacalcet might reduce the risk of death or nonfatal cardiovascular events in such patients. In this clinical trial, we randomly assigned 3883 patients with moderate-to-severe secondary hyperparathyroidism (median level of intact parathyroid hormone, 693 pg per milliliter [10th to 90th percentile, 363 to 1694]) who were undergoing hemodialysis to receive either cinacalcet or placebo. All patients were eligible to receive conventional therapy, including phosphate binders, vitamin D sterols, or both. The patients were followed for up to 64 months. The primary composite end point was the time until death, myocardial infarction, hospitalization for unstable angina, heart failure, or a peripheral vascular event. The primary analysis was performed on the basis of the intention-to-treat principle. The median duration of study-drug exposure was 21.2 months in the cinacalcet group, versus 17.5 months in the placebo group. The primary composite end point was reached in 938 of 1948 patients (48.2%) in the cinacalcet group and 952 of 1935 patients (49.2%) in the placebo group (relative hazard in the cinacalcet group vs. the placebo group, 0.93; 95% confidence interval, 0.85 to 1.02; P=0.11). Hypocalcemia and gastrointestinal adverse events were significantly more frequent in patients receiving cinacalcet. In an unadjusted intention-to-treat analysis, cinacalcet did not significantly reduce the risk of death or major cardiovascular events in patients with moderate-to-severe secondary hyperparathyroidism who were undergoing dialysis. - Abstract
The development of speech communication curricula in two diverse small colleges--one state supported and the other a private liberal arts school--is traced in this paper. Following a description of each college, the paper discusses the problems each faced in developing its speech communication curriculum, including opposition from members of other departments, lack of time and faculty to provide courses in all essential areas, the number of preparations necessary for each instructor, and the lack of exposure to several perspectives for the students. The paper also discusses five factors that contributed to the success of the programs: (1) student demand for the courses, (2) perseverance of the faculty, (3) clearly articulated goals, (4) reciprocity with other departments, and (5) faculty participation in state, regional, and national professional conferences. The paper concludes by offering possible strategies for use by other small colleges in similar situations. Appendixes contain course listings for the two colleges. (FL)

- Abstract
Recalling a program session at the 1981 annual meeting of the Speech Communication Association entitled "The Small College Speech Communication Instructor: Jacks and Jills of All Trades," this paper "revisits" that session by reviewing the comments and observations made then and offering reflections on the changes that have been observed in the intervening years by three of the four original panelists. In general, the panelists indicate that many of the concerns expressed in 1981 are equally valid in 1984, with the exception of two changes: a decline in formal intercollegiate debate opportunities, and a revitalization of activities for small college personnel that has been prompted by an increase in structured and organized participation of persons from small college programs in national and regional programs. - Abstract
Magnons are the elementary excitations of a magnetically ordered system. In ferromagnets, only a single band of low-energy magnons needs to be considered, but in ferrimagnets the situation is more complex owing to different magnetic sublattices involved. In this case, low lying optical modes exist that can affect the dynamical response. Here we show that the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) is sensitive to the complexities of the magnon spectrum. The SSE is caused by thermally excited spin dynamics that are converted to a voltage by the inverse spin Hall effect at the interface to a heavy metal contact. By investigating the temperature dependence of the SSE in the ferrimagnet gadolinium iron garnet, with a magnetic compensation point near room temperature, we demonstrate that higher-energy exchange magnons play a key role in the SSE., QN/Quantum Nanoscience, Applied Sciences

Aquatic Ecology - Abstract
Contains fulltext : 27556.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Habitat fragmentation has been recognized as one of the major threats to plant population persistence. Fragmented small and isolated populations are expected to be seriously affected by inbreeding and genetic drift. Gene flow through seed and pollen dispersal may counterbalance the negative population genetic effects by increasing the level of genetic variation. However, in fragmented landscapes gene flow may be interrupted as interpopulation distances become too large to be bridged. At the same time species' dispersal ability may reduced due to severe inbreeding. If populations are to persist in fragmented landscapes, and to avoid inbreeding, successful dispersal will be crucial for plant species. Therefore we hypothesize that species that are adapted to long-distance seed dispersal might have an advantage over short-distance dispersing species, although the relationship between seed dispersal and the genetic effects of habitat fragmentation are complex and poorly understood. The studies described in this thesis aimed to clarify the complexity of genetic effects of habitat fragmentation on two plant species differing in dispersal ability and longevity (Succisa pratensis and Hypochaeris radicata). Crossing experiments in the greenhouse to determine the effects of inbreeding on species' dispersal ability, but also reciprocal transplant experiments to investigate adaptation to home sites in the field, and molecular markers to measure gene flow and genetic variation of fragmented populations were used to investigate the initial hypothesis. Synthesizing the results for S. pratensis and H. radicata, we can confirm our hypothesis and conclude that the long-lived, short-distance dispersing S. pratensis is unfavourably affected by habitat fragmentation, while the short-lived, long-distance dispersing H. radicata is not, as long as suitable sites for establishment remain available. Thus, it seems that in fragmented landscapes, long-distance seed dispersal in combination with the necessary habitat quality is more beneficial than longevity, although it must be noted that being long-lived may prevent rapid extinction of a species. In addition, recommendations are offered to improve the viability of the populations of both species and prospects for future research are presented. Using microsatellites, we investigated population structure and gene flow of the short-lived, wind-dispersed plant species Hypochaeris radicata in a fragmented agricultural landscape where more than 99% of the nutrient-poor grasslands have disappeared over the last century. We sampled populations in the few remaining high density populations in conservation areas, as well as individuals that occurred, with lower densities, in linear landscape elements, at two spatial scales. In a re-inventory of the landscape, after 3 years, both extinctions and colonizations of populations were observed. Contrary to expectations, no differences in genetic diversity between high and low density populations were observed. Both types of populations had relatively high levels of diversity. Overall genetic differentiation (¿) was 0.04 and significantly different from zero (P

- Abstract
We developed five highly polymorphic dinucleotide microsatellite loci for the grassland species Hypochaeris radicata (Asteraceae). Polymorphism of these markers was examined in six populations in the Netherlands. All loci were polymorphic in all populations. The number of alleles per locus varied between 18 and 43. Expected heterozygosity was between 0.86 and 0.91. Cross-species amplification was tested in six Hypochaeris species and was successful for three different loci in four species. These microsatellites are a useful tool in population genetic, dispersal and metapopulation studies or in testing levels of inbreeding.
