Abstract

INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are among the leading causes of death in most developed countries. (1-3) An increasing number of cohort studies, many of them from western countries, have reported [...], BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: There have been few studies on the association of fruit and vegetable (FV) intake with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in Asian populations where both dietary habits and disease structure are different from western countries. No study in Asia has found its significant association with stroke. We examined associations of FV intake with mortality risk from total CVD, stroke and coronary heart diseases (CHDs) in a representative Japanese sample. METHODS: A total of 9112 participants aged from 24-year follow-up data in the NIPPON DATA80, of which baseline data were obtained in the National Nutrition Survey Japan in 1980, were studied. Dietary data were obtained from 3-day weighing dietary records. Participants were divided into sex-specific quartiles of energy adjusted intake of FV. Multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated between strata of the total of FV intake, fruit intake and vegetable intake. The adjustment included age, sex, smoking, drinking habit and energy adjusted intakes of sodium and some other food groups. RESULTS: Participants with higher FV intake were older, ate more fish, milk and dairy products and soybeans and legumes and ate less meat. Multivariate-adjusted HR (95% confidence interval;P; P for trend) for the highest versus the lowest quartile of the total of FV intake was 0.74 (0.61-0.91;0.004;0.003) for total CVD, 0.80 (0.59-1.09;0.105;0.036) for stroke and 0.57 (0.37-0.87;0.010;0.109) for CHD. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that higher total intake of FVs was significantly associated with reduced risk of CVD mortality in Japan. Abstract

This population-based cross-sectional study investigated the influence of dietary patterns on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a Japanese population. The Tsuruoka Metabolomics Cohort Study enrolled a general population aged 35-74 years from among participants in annual health check-up programs in Tsuruoka City, Japan. Eating habits were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Principal component analysis was used to identify dietary patterns among food items. The association between quartiles of scores for each dietary pattern and intermediate AMD was assessed using multivariate logistic regression models. Of 3433 participants, 415 had intermediate AMD. We identified four principal components comprising the Vegetable-rich pattern, Varied staple food pattern, Animal-rich pattern, and Seafood-rich pattern. After adjusting for potential confounders, higher Varied staple food diet scores were associated with a lower prevalence of intermediate AMD (fourth vs. first quartile) (OR, 0.63; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.46-0.86). A significant trend of decreasing ORs for intermediate AMD associated with increasing Varied staple food diet scores was noted (p for trend = 0.002). There was no significant association between the other dietary patterns and intermediate AMD. In a Japanese population, individuals with a dietary pattern score high in the Varied staple food pattern had a lower prevalence of intermediate AMD.

Abstract

Summary. CD8+ T cells in FIV-infected cats inhibit feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) replication by producing a soluble factor(s). In the present study, four SPF cats were experimentally infected with FIV. The period during which the anti-FIV activity of CD8+ T cells became detectable was investigated, and the presence or absence of this activity in the lymph nodes and spleen was examined. Furthermore, we investigated which step(s) of the FIV replication cycle are affected by this antiviral activity. This antiviral activity became detectable five weeks after FIV infection in early cases, and it was simultaneous with or one week after the induction of humoral immunity. All cats having CD8+ T cells with anti-FIV activity in the peripheral blood also possessed CD8+ T cells with anti-FIV activity in the lymph nodes. In contrast, CD8+ T cells from the spleens of some, but not all cats showed anti-FIV activity. CD8+ T cell-depleted peripheral blood mononuclear cells were cultured and reconstituted with CD8+ T cells on day 12 of culture after confirming FIV replication. The number of FIV proviral DNA copies in the cells did not change, but the amount of FIV p24 antigen production in the culture supernatant and the number of FIV mRNA copies in the cells decreased. These findings suggested that CD8+ T cell anti-FIV activity acts at the level of FIV mRNA synthesis from the FIV proviral DNA, inhibiting FIV replication by a non-cytolytic mechanism. 37. Development of a Transportable Telescope for Galactic Survey at 500 GHz in Antarctica

Abstract

We have developed a transportable 30-cm submillimeter-wave telescope to operate at the Dome Fuji station in the Antarctic plateau. Transportability is an important requirement in the design; the telescope can be divided into several subsystems by hands. The maximum weight of the subsystems is restricted to be below 60 kg, so that the telescope can be assembled without a lifting machine. A small 4 K mechanical cryocooler is used for cooling down a SIS mixer. Total power consumption was designed to be less than 2.5 kW. The optical system was designed to satisfy the frequency independent matching condition at the subreflector and the feed horn of the SIS mixer, so we could accommodate a higher frequency receiver without changing mirrors. A quasi-optical filter was employed for the single sideband operation in observations of the CO (J = 4-3) line at 461.04 GHz and the [CI] (3P1-3P0) line at 492.16 GHz. It was equipped with a 1 GHz width spectrometer that covers a velocity width of 600 km/s with a velocity resolution of 0.04 km/s at 461 GHz. We carried out test observations at a 4400-m altitude site in northern Chile during winters of 2010 and 2011. The typical system noise temperature, including atmospheric loss, was 3000 K (SSB) at 461 GHz, that is mainly limited by atmospheric opacity. The beam size of the 30-cm offset Cassegrain antenna at 0.65 mm of wavelength was measured to be 9'.4±0'.4 by cross scanning of the sun. This angular resolution of the 30-cm telescope is same as those of the Columbia-CfA-U. Chile CO (J = 1-0) surveys. We estimated the main beam efficiency to be 87±5% by observing the new moon. We succeeded in mapping Orion Molecular Cloud A and M17 SW in CO (J = 4-3) followed by test observations toward Orion KL in both CO (J = 4-3) and [CI] (3P1-3P0) .

A pair of separated pyrene groups attached to the carbohydrate component are placed side by side when it recognizes metal ions, affording excimer fluorescence. 44. Genetic risk factor for abdominal aortic aneurysm: HLA-DR2(15), A Japanese study

Abstract

Purpose: Autoimmunity has been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Several autoimmune diseases are associated with specific HLA DR alleles. These experiments were carried out to determine whether the same HLA DR types that have been reported to be associated with AAA in a mixed North American population are similarly associated with AAA in a more homogeneous group of patients in Japan. Method: HLA DR typing was performed by a serologic method on samples of peripheral blood of patients with nonspecific infrarenal AAA in Nagasaki University Hospital in Japan. The frequencies of HLA DR antigens were compared with those of volunteers approximately matched for age and sex from the same referral area. Results: HLA DR haplotypes were determined in 46 Japanese patients with AAA and in 50 patients in a control group. The HLA-DR2(15) antigen was observed in 27 (58.7%) patients (29 alleles 31.5%) with AAA and in 14 (28%) subjects (16 alleles 26.0%) in the control group (p < 0.005). Conclusions: The data suggest that HLA-DR2(15) has an important role as a genetic risk factor for AAA in Japanese patients, as previously reported in a mixed North American population. 48. [A case of acute spinal epidural hematoma in a patient with antiplatelet therapy]

Abstract

The authors report a case of acute spinal epidural hematoma occurring in a patient receiving antiplatelet drugs. A 76-year-old man with a history of cerebral infarction had been taking antiplatelet agents for one year. He suddenly developed severe back pain which woke him from sleep, and numbness of his lower extremities was then noted. He was hospitalized 15 hours later. Neurological examination revealed flaccid paralysis of both lower extremities with negative Babinski's reflex, and sensory disturbance below the level of L1. The bleeding time and prothrombin time were prolonged. Computed tomographic (CT) scan revealed a biconvex, relatively hyperdense mass in the posterior spinal canal at the level of T12. Metrizamide myelography disclosed an incomplete blockage caused by an epidural mass at the level of T11. Post-myelographic CT scan demonstrated a sharply demarcated extradural filling defect at the level of T11. Seventeen hours after the onset of symptoms, an emergency laminectomy was performed extending from T12 to L3, and the epidural clot was totally evacuated. Histological examination of the capsule of the hematoma revealed no vascular anomalies. The patient made a good postoperative recovery. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of spontaneous intraspinal hemorrhage in a patient taking antiplatelet drugs. Acute onset of persistent pain anywhere along the spinal axis and the development of spinal neurological deficits in a patient on antiplatelet therapy should raise the suspicion of a spinal epidural hematoma. It should be stressed that prompt neuroradiological diagnosis and rapid surgical decompression are essential to allow good recovery. The present case illustrates that neurological emergencies can occur in patients receiving antiplatelet therapy.
