1. micrOMEGAs 6.0: N-component dark matter

Abstract

micrOMEGAs is a numerical code to compute dark matter (DM) observables in generic extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. We present a new version of micrOMEGAs that includes a generalization of the Boltzmann equations governing the DM cosmic abundance evolution which can be solved to compute the relic density of N-component DM. The direct and indirect detection rates in such scenarios take into account the relative contribution of each component such that constraints on the combined signal of all DM components can be imposed. The co-scattering mechanism for DM production is also included, whereas the routines used to compute the relic density of feebly interacting particles have been improved in order to take into account the effect of thermal masses of t-channel particles. Finally, the tables for the DM self-annihilation - induced photon spectra have been extended down to DM masses of 110 MeV, and they now include annihilation channels into light mesons., Comment: 39 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

We consider multi-component dark matter in a model where one dark matter component is feebly interacting (FIMP) while the second is weakly interacting (WIMP). The model contains an inert scalar doublet and a complex scalar singlet and features a discrete $Z_4$ symmetry. We determine the parameter space that satisfies theoretical constraints, collider constraints, relic density as well as direct and indirect detection limits. We discuss the possibility to probe the model through collider and astrophysical searches. We find that it is possible that the FIMP forms the dominant DM component, in this case the astrophysical signatures of the WIMP are much suppressed. We also explore the case where the doublet can decay into pairs of singlets leaving only one DM component, the FIMP. Abstract

We consider a multi-component dark matter model where the dark sector contains a scalar doublet and a complex scalar singlet. We impose a discrete $Z_4$ symmetry to ensure such that the lightest component of the doublet, $\tilde{A}$, and the singlet, $\tilde{S}$, are both stable. Interactions between the dark sectors impact significantly dark matter observables, they allow in particular to significantly relax the direct detection constraints on the model. To determine the parameter space that satisfies relic density, theoretical and collider constraints as well as direct and indirect detection limits, we perform two separate scans, the first includes the full parameter space of the model while the second is dedicated to scenarios with a compressed inert doublet spectrum. In the first case we find that the singlet is generally the dominant dark matter component while in the compressed case the doublet is more likely to be the dominant dark matter component. In both cases we find that the two dark matter particles can have masses that ranges from around $m_h/2$ to over the TeV scale. We emphasize the interplay between cosmological astrophysical and collider constraints and show that a large fraction of the parameter space that escapes current constraints is within the sensitivity reach of future detectors such as XENON-nT, Darwin or CTA. Important collider signatures are mostly found in the compressed spectrum case with the possibility of probing the model with searches for heavy stable charged particles and disappearing tracks. We also show that semi-annihilation processes such as $\tilde{S}\tilde{S}\to \tilde{A}Z$ could give the dominant signature in indirect detection searches., Comment: 44 pages, 24 figures

Abstract

Direct detection experiments obtain 90% upper limits on the elastic scattering cross sections of dark matter with nucleons assuming point-like interactions and standard astrophysical and cosmological parameters. In this paper we provide a recasting of the limits from XENON1T, PICO-60, CRESST-III and DarkSide-50 and include them in micrOMEGAs. The code can then be used to directly impose constraints from these experiments on generic dark matter models under different assumptions about the DM velocity distribution or on the nucleus form factors. Abstract

The temperature of an electronic device is one of the most important parameters to deal with. Any increase above the temperature limits results in a failure in the device. Thus, to ensure good operation, an electronic device should be cooled. One promising technique is the use of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) for their well-known ability to absorb the heat dissipated by the device, thanks to their high latent heat of fusion. Arachidic acid is a fatty acid that, when mixed with sodium decanoate and potassium oleate salts, can be used as a promising PCM due to its high latent heat. This paper aims to shed light on the use such mixtures of Arachidic acid for cooling in a heat sink. An experimental setup was built for this purpose. The results show that the Arachidic acid mixtures are suitable for applications requiring intermediate heat dissipation.

Abstract

Existing passive cooling solutions limit the short-term thermal output of systems, thereby either limiting instantaneous performance or requiring active cooling solutions. As the temperature of the electronic devices increases, their failure rate increases. That’s why electrical devices should be cooled. Conventional electronic cooling systems usually consist of a metal heat sink coupled to a fan. This paper compares the heat distribution on a heat sink relative to different heat fluxes produced by electronic chips. The benefit of adding a fan is also investigated when high levels of heat generation are expected.

Abstract

As the temperature of electronic devices increases, their failure rate increases. That is why electrical devices should be cooled. One of the promising cooling techniques is using Phase Change Materials (PCMs). A new passive temperature management technique, that involves the direct placement of PCMs on the chip, has been explored and developed. PCMs are potential temperature regulators that can store thermal energy and release it during melting and freezing respectively. PCM-based heat sinks can efficiently store the heat dissipated from the electronic components to delay the peak temperature of the electronic devices as much as possible and then release the stored energy during the off period. This paper compares the temperature distribution on a heat sink with and without PCM with different magnitudes of heat flux. Also, two different PCMs with different densities, namely salt-hydrate and wax, have been investigated in cooling electronic devices.

17. Performance of overwinter cover crops in coastal Lebanon

Abstract

The effect of the cover crops, narbon vetch (Vicia narbonensis), oat (Avena sativa), forage radish (Raphanus sativus), on weed suppressionandsoil nitrogenwas studied in field conditions overwinter. The impact of their residues on the productivity of a subsequent corn crop was followed in the summerof the same year. Between mid-November andMarch oat produced, on a dry weight basis,915 g m-2against 402 g m-2for narbon vetch and 292 g m-2for radish. Consequently, weeds were suppressed best in the presence of oat. Narbon vetchwas less effective than radishin controlling weeds, as it was slowerto get established. In terms of mineral nitrogen, soils occupied by radish (13.1 mg kg-1soil) presented smaller concentrations of ammonium-Nthanthose by vetch(18.7 mg kg-1soil)and the control(19.7 mg kg-1soil). Following the overwinter covercrops, plots were split intoone half whereroots only were incorporated,and another half receivingwhole plants. Residues of whole plants promoted higher production of corn in the booting and flowering stages, as compared to roots only. At the 50% doughstage, the highest dry matter yield was 7.6 Mgha-1afternarbon vetch. Cornyield was the smallest after oat, due to N immobilization. This was demonstrated, using the litter bag technique, when oat residues (15.6g N kg-1) lost 31% of their N against 66% for radishresidues(21.1g N kg-1).For an effective control of weeds and nutrient recycling a cover crop, such as oat, is most efficient. In this case, the succeeding summer crop needs to receive some extra nitrogen.

Abstract

The use of natural materials especially fatty acids as phase change materials (PCM) for different applications is considered as a current challenge for the scientific community. The main advantages of fatty acids are that they cover a wide range of melting temperatures and consume a good amount of latent heat while transiting from a state of aggregation to another. This work focuses on Arachidic acid, a fatty acid which presents some remarkable thermal properties that enable its use as PCM. Arachidic acid is mixed with different chemical salts in a cost-efficient manner, in order to alter its thermal characteristics. The main objective of the modifications is to maintain high latent heat, with a wider span of melting temperature and a smaller melting peak temperature to accommodate with the allowable electronic devices’ temperatures. Specific properties such a s the heat capacity, the new latent heat (J/g), and peak temperature (°C) were determined in order to analyze the reliability and stability of fatty acids as PCM. The results showed that Arachidic acid mixed with 10 mol% sodium decanoate exhibited the highest melting point depreciation, from 75.2 °C to 71.9 °C, while maintaining a high latent heat of fusion (222 J/g).

Abstract

International audience; Phase Change Materials (PCM) have been a emerging research topic for the last few years. However, the lack of detailed and precise information regarding their thermophysical properties is a major concern for researchers. The current paper presents a simple method to determine the specific heat (Cp), thermal conductivity (K) and melting temperature (Tm) of a PCM using a novel low cost device. Compared to the conventional existing methods such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), T-history, panel test and simple thermal analysis, this new method grants the following features: simplicity and ease of manufacturing and the ability to measure the thermophysical properties of heterogeneous PCMs samples without a reference material. Using this novel device, the thermophysical properties of the sodium sulfate decahydrate were measured and good agreement is obtained with values collected from the open literature using other devices.

Abstract

We study freeze-in scenarios in which the interactions of dark matter with the Standard Model are mediated by a heavy vector-like fermion with a mass that is higher than the reheating temperature of the Universe. In such scenarios freeze-in requires sizeable interactions between the two sectors which, in turn, implies that prompt LHC dark matter searches become relevant, unlike in conventional scenarios of freeze-in. We examine the interplay of long-lived and prompt searches and show that their role is highly complementary in constraining different regions of the parameter space.

Abstract

As the temperature of electronic devices increases, their failure rate increases. That's why electrical devices should be cooled. One of the promising cooling techniques is using Phase Change Materials (PCMs). PCMs are potential temperature regulators that store and release thermal energy during the process of melting and freezing respectively. PCM-based heat sinks can effectively store the heat dissipated from the electronic components to delay the peak temperature of the electronic devices as much as possible and then release the stored energy during the off period. This paper compares the temperature distribution on a heat sink with and without PCM with different heat flux.

Abstract

This report presents the activities of the `New Physics' working group for the `Physics at TeV Colliders' workshop (Les Houches, France, 10--28 June, 2019). These activities include studies of direct searches for new physics, approaches to exploit published data to constrain new physics, as well as the development of tools to further facilitate these investigations.
