3. The effect of clays, salinity and saturation on the high-frequency electrical properties of shaly sandstones

Abstract

The effects of frequency, clay content, clay type, ionic concentration and saturation on the complex impedance of various shaly sandstone rocks have been investigated in a detailed and systematic manner. Synthetic samples have been used, so as to allow full control over clay content, clay type and clay distribution, hi addition, selected outcrop and reservoir samples with varying concentrations of clay were also used. Experimental measurements of complex impedance were made as a function of applied stress and saturation, for samples having differing amounts of clay, over a frequency range from 10 Hz to 2 MHz. In addition, the influence of ionic concentration (salinity) was also investigated. The modulus of impedance for the bulk sample response for fully saturated samples was frequency independent in the frequency range from approximately 10 kHz to 600 kHz. A strong linear correlation between the average complex impedance values and clay content was observed, with clay type influencing the magnitude of impedance. However, the reactance and dielectric constant were strongly frequency dependent. They both exhibited a power law dependency with frequency for the montmorillonite and illite synthetic shaly samples. It was possible to deduce correlations between the exponents from the reactance with clay content, and to a lesser extent clay type. The illite shaly samples usually showed the highest dielectric constant values, with the lowest belonging to the kaolinite samples. All samples showed strong relationships with salinity as the concentration was varied from 60,000 ppm to 15,000 ppm, with the modulus of impedance increasing as salinity decreased. The bulk sample response was frequency independent over all salinity concentrations. The dielectric constant showed increasing values as the salinity decreased, with a power law relationship best fitting the data. As the samples were desaturated, a frequency dependency developed for the modulus of impedance as a ftinction of saturation. As the samples were de-saturated the dielectric values decreased in magnitude. The concept of double layer thickness, and the variation in the cationic exchange capacity (CEC) with brine salinity and clay type, were used to explain the responses observed. Using this concept, the data was modelled using equivalent RC circuit models, and an impedance network model. It was found possible to model the data using combinations of capacitors and resistors.

Abstract

We develop a method based on concept of exergy-return on exergy-investment (ERoEI) to determine the energy efficiency and CO2 footprint of polymer and surfactant enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This integrated approach considers main surface and subsurface elements of the chemical EOR methods. The main energy investment in oil recovery by water injection is mainly related to circulation of water with respect to exergy of the oil produced. At large water cuts of >90%, more than 70% of the total invested energy is spent on pumping the fluids. Consequently, production of barrels of oil is associated with large amounts of CO2 emission for mature oil fields with large water cuts. Our analysis shows that injection of polymer increases the energy efficiency of the oil recovery system. Because of additional oil (exergy gain) and less water circulation (exergy investment), the project-time averaged energy invested (and consequently CO2 emitted) to produce one barrel of oil from polymer flooding is less than that of the water flooding at large water cuts. We conclude that polymer injection into reservoirs with high water cut can be a solution for two major challenges of the transition period: (1) meet the global energy demand via an increase in oil recovery and (2) reduce the CO2 footprint of oil production (more and cleaner oil). Abstract

A method based on the concept of exergy-return on exergy-investment is developed to determine the energy efficiency and CO2 intensity of polymer and surfactant enhanced oil recovery techniques. Exergy is the useful work obtained from a system at a given thermodynamics state. The main exergy investment in oil recovery by water injection is related to the circulation of water required to produce oil. At water cuts (water fraction in the total liquid produced) greater than 90%, more than 70% of the total invested energy is spent on injection and lift pumps, resulting in large CO2 intensity for the produced oil. It is shown that injection of polymer with or without surfactant can considerably reduce CO2 intensity of the mature waterflood projects by decreasing the volume of produced water and the exergy investment associated with its circulation. In the field examples considered in this paper, a barrel of oil produced by injection of polymer has 2–5 times less CO2 intensity compared to the baseline waterflood oil. Due to large manufacturing exergy of the synthetic polymers and surfactants, in some cases, the unit exergy investment for production of oil could be larger than that of the waterflooding. Abstract

Polymer injection in the south of Sultanate of Oman has been implemented in Marmul field for the last decade. Recently, alkaline surfactant polymer (ASP) technology has also been piloted in the field, which was technically successful owing to its significant incremental oil production. The current end-game strategy for the field is to follow polymer with ASP flood in order to produce the remaining oil after polymer flood and maximize the ultimate oil recovery factor. This has revealed the need for evaluation of the full-field performance of ASP flood using available tools. Full-field dynamic models are not always best tools for modeling the performance of chemical enhanced oil recovery, primarily due to under-representation of the reservoir heterogeneity, lack of the complementary data, complexity of the process itself, and large computation time. In this paper, we implement a conduit-model approach using field production data from the ASP pilot to assess the ultimate incremental oil recovery. This approach is compared to an analytical model that is based on the modified Koval's method with reservoir heterogeneity as an input parameter. The obtained results are used for preliminary assessment of the difference between polymer and ASP injection in the full field.
