The Second Vatican Council is generally considered as the Church's serious effort to engage the modern world, which at the turn of the twentieth century confronted the crisis brought by the two world wars, the Cold War, the increasing secularization of culture, and the challenges posed by the late industrial age and the new information society. One of the documents of Vatican II, the Decree on Social Communication, laid down the principles and means by which the Church will utilize the mass media in its work and in guiding the laity in its proper use. Behind the scenes, Marshall McLuhan, a Catholic communication and media theorist, was seen to have a huge influence on the shaping of the details of Inter Mirifica and subsequent documents on social media. This paper is an investigation into the interaction between the Vatican and McLuhan, and how the Church sought his ideas in subsequent development of the decree on social communication, and how McLuhan represented, interpreted and invoked the Catholic faith in his various writings. The festive report for the funeral of Feliciana de San Ignacio was published in 1733 by fr. Álvaro Gaspar Enríquez, whose central core is the prayer preached by Br. José del Castillo. The text is a defense of the virtues of the deceased using various symbols. In the approvals the speaker himself is praised with the same resource. This study argues that the bond between 'secularization' and 'de-legitimation' is not only borne out in debates over grand historical narratives relating to the status of modernity, as argued by Hans Blumenberg, but in debates over the appraisal of specific modern philosophical programs as well. It does this by examining how the category of 'secularization' is used to delegitimize Martin Heidegger's thought, from both theological and secular perspectives, by two of his former students, Hans Jonas and Karl Löwith. By analysing their interpretation of Heidegger and their understanding of secularization, legitimacy, and the philosophy-theology relationship, this study sheds light on the intellectual projects of these three thinkers – master and two students – and demonstrates the application of secularization as a hermeneutical category of de-legitimization on the basis of 'insufficiency' – either insufficiently secular or insufficiently religious. This research is based on an introduction, four chapters, and a conclusion. The first chapter deals with the linguistic and technical meaning of the term "vagrancy", and the second chapter deals with the origin of this term, its synonyms, meanings, and connotations. As for the third chapter, it includes the meanings and reasons for the term "vagrancy" in the four eras: pre-Islamic, Islamic, Umayyad, and Abbasid, and how this term differs from one era to another according to economic, social, and political changes, in addition to the use of poets in the modern era, those vagabonds, as symbols of revolution and rebellion against injustice and tyranny, which prevails in the world at all times and places. The conclusion, the research showed that the reasons that led to the existence of vagabondage in ancient times, from poverty, injustice, oppression, tyranny, and deprivation, are the same as what the oppressed and subjugated Arab peoples suffer today, and how much we need today the chivalry and generosity of yesterday's vagabonds such as "Urwa bin al-Ward" and "Tabat Sharran" to achieve social justice, and revolt against injustice and tyranny for the sake of freedom and a dignified life. This paper explores Arendt's and Foucault's thinking through the lens of the modern labor paradigm. Even if the question of labor is a less prominent path in both thinkers' research, it leads to the heart of the modern era as they both understand it. In their respective fields, Arendt and Foucault sketch a similar link between the beginning of the modern age and the transformation of the notion of labor. While Arendt directly examines the modern glorification of labor and the emergence of the labor society, Foucault provides numerous analyses of labor as an instrument and target of disciplinary society, along with an epistemic distinction of modernity deeply connected to the term, 'labor.' This joint reading contributes to what might be called their philosophies of labor, as well as to the ongoing debate about the nature and meaning of labor in contemporary society. As a tribute to the German theologian Jürgen Moltmann, who died on 3 June 2024 in Tübingen, Germany, this issue of The Ecumenical Review is publishing a chapter from his book Hope in These Troubled Times, launched during Moltmann's last visit to the World Council of Churches in 2019. This chapter offers a critique of a theological approach that puts the human being at the centre of the relationship toward nature, an approach that has become questionable because of the ecological crisis. Instead, this chapter argues for a paradigm shift from placing the human being at the centre of the world to a cosmic integration of humanity, from the arrogance of global dominion to cosmic humbleness, from a distinction between God and the world to a mutual participation of a "world in God" and "God in the world." In this work, and in line with the attention international researchers have devoted to Heidegger's major works to contribute to the elucidation of his teachings, we intend to establish a hypothesis based on Heidegger's secondary literature in his thought-following his speeches, presentations, lectures, letters, notes, interviews, etc. Thus, the hypothesis of this work aims to prove the foundation of Heidegger's teachings on the Metaphysical Foundations of the Modern Age-specifically, by posing questions on the Essence of Modern Age Science, the Essence of Action in the Modern Age, and the Essence of Technic in the Modern Age. In this context, this essay explores the main phenomena of modernity emphasized by Heidegger in his secondary works to demonstrate the Metaphysical Foundations of the Modern Age and thereby prove the Metaphysical Foundation of the Modern Age's essence of Modern Age science, the essence of action in the Modern Age, and the essence of technic in the Modern Age. The ultimate goal is to synthesize fragments from various Heideggerian works of secondary literature to point out, in one place, what Heidegger taught at a higher level in his major works: how the Modern Age, in all its fundamental phenomena and in the entirety of its richness/deficiencies, delivers its foundations within Modern Age Metaphysics.

This paper aims to synthesize recent knowledge about the churches built between 1492 and 1918 in the Kaštela area and present its characteristics obtained by research in the doctoral thesis of the first author. The research covered 18 churches located in the coastal area. Fourteen churches have been preserved, two were pulled down, while the existence of two other churches was detected on old maps and in written documents. After a genealogical and catalogue study, a typological and stylistic analysis of the churches has been made. The longitudinal aisleless churches as a dominant shape vary in dimensions, type of construction, construction solutions and elements of architectural decoration.

Knowledge of hospital food in modern-age hospitals in Spain is based on documentation from very few centers, mostly in large cities, and new contributions are needed to expand the existing evidence. To this end, the documentation of the Santiago de Vitoria hospital has been analysed, a hospital and a city more representative of the peninsular median. An unequivocal economic focus has been found in the documentation on foodstuffs, and the record of their acquisition only includes extraordinary expenses, mainly foodstuffs destined for the apothecary's shop (80% of the entries). The basal diet is only known to us by its theoretical description, and its expenditure is recorded by number of portions or their fraction. There is evidence of triple supervision in its preparation and administration, as well as careful medical prescription of the food in the individualised diets. In conclusion, the expenditures do not show the actual consumption, nor do they represent the real diet, since the vast majority of the food items recorded were destined for the pharmacy and not for the feeding of the sick. It must be asked whether previous studies, which also use expenditure data, have not misinterpreted these data by wrongly extrapolating a magnificent diet when, in the case of Vitoria, it was made up of the working classes. This text investigates how certain exceptional actions carried out by women in the military sphere during the conquest of America in the 16th century were documented, interpreted, and narrated by witnesses and chroniclers. These accounts were influenced by gender archetypes and stereotypes shaped and influenced by the prevailing social, religious, moral, and cultural conventions of that period. The article analyzes some paradigmatic cases from the early Peruvian viceroyalty. This analysis is conducted from a gender perspective that enables the examination of aspects such as female models transferred to the New World and the consideration of the actions of some women in frontier territories, where various factors allowed for, and even demanded, roles far removed from the norms of Early Modern society. The broletto, the medieval building that housed the communal administration of the Lombard cities, has long been the subject of studies that examine it from ethical, political, stylistic, and formal points of view. In recent years, focus in medieval studies has shifted to areas of the 'margins of the communal world', territories that, although relevant to historical change, have been neglected by historiography. In this contribution, I consider the architecture of buildings in fringe areas from the valleys in the Rhaetian and Bergamasque Alps that date to the communal age and that were significantly transformed between the 15th century and the early contemporary period. I begin with general remarks about the context and then use the communal palace of Clusone in Bergamo and the Palazzo Pretorio di Chiavenna (Sondrio) as case studies, drawing on unpublished documents in the municipal archives of the two cities. The paper follows on from the theme of the conference Archaeological Research in Czech Silesia, thus presenting a summary of the methods and history of research on medieval and modern leather artefacts, especially in the Czech part of Silesia, and, in order to understand the entire issue, it also outlines the basic European literature, without which the principles of research cannot be properly grasped. The article is not about a synthesis of the finds published so far, but about presenting the entire issue based on them. Islamic civilization witnessed an extraordinary agricultural revolution that played an important role in shaping the socio-economic landscape. The aim of this abstract is to provide an overview of this revolution, exploring the main drivers, impacts, and changes that occurred. This research was carried out using qualitative method. This method involves a library study which is a comprehensive literature review about the agricultural revolution in Islamic civilization and its connection with modern times. The agricultural revolution in Islamic civilization emerged during the Islamic Golden Age (8th to 14th centuries), characterized by advances in various fields of knowledge, including agriculture. One of the main factors behind this agricultural revolution was the development and spread of new cultivation systems. This system not only increases agricultural productivity but also facilitates the expansion of cultivated areas in arid and semi-arid areas. Islamic agricultural practices also produced Islamic scientists such as Ibn al-Awwam who studied plants, soil fertility, and agronomy, which led to the introduction of new plant varieties and better planting techniques. Their scientific discoveries and experiments laid the foundation for modern agricultural science. In addition, the connection of the agricultural revolution in Islamic civilization with modern agriculture lies in its sustainable and efficient techniques. Emphasis on irrigation management, crop conservation, and the use of technology in line with approaches such as precision agriculture, conservation agriculture, and sustainable farming methods. In conclusion, the agricultural revolution in Islamic civilization has a great connection with modern agriculture. By taking the lessons of the Islamic agricultural revolution, we can strive to improve management in cultivation, technological innovation, and increase production in our efforts to create a resilient and productive agricultural system for the future. Introduction: although important, food in medieval and modern hospitals was far from the excellence and abundance suggested by some historians, probably due to an incorrect assessment of hospital documentation, considering all food expenditure to be for food when much of it was destined for the apothecary's shop. Aim/method: to identify the foodstuffs used for non-nutritional therapeutic purposes during the modern age at Hospital de Santiago in Vitoria (Alava, Spain), to describe the system of consignment, and to review the bibliography of the period in order to facilitate documentary assessment strategies for researchers. Results: between 1592 and 1813, 42 groups of foodstuffs acquired for non-nutritional therapeutic purposes were identified. The system of annotation in the expenditure books is neither systematic nor homogeneous, but highly variable and dependent on who made the entry. Twenty-seven terms were identified for the recognition that a given foodstuff was intended for the apothecary's shop and not the kitchen. Fourteen sanitary texts of the period were chosen as clarifying bibliography, finding the 17th century nursing manuals most useful for the proposed purposes. Conclusions: the variety and quantity of foodstuffs destined for the apothecary's shop shows the risk of confusion in unfamiliar researchers when analysing hospital diets from account books. A proposal of terms and strategies for discriminating the nutritional or non-nutritional use of the food acquired, together with bibliographical recommendations, is essential for an adequate assessment of historical hospital diets. This article takes a fresh look at islands from an historical perspective. It aims to study them through the lens of mobilities, which enables us to consider islands within the context of more global dynamics of which they are a part. The Mediterranean sea and its islands in the modern period are here used as a vantage point to investigate this question, and hence take a step back from what is perhaps a more common monographic approach.

La Clotilde overo la Francia convertita by Coli Lucchese (1686) and Clotilde by Piccioli (1688) represent the two extremes of the continuum of female musical education in late 17th-century Venice. The first is a prose piece intended for a convent of former prostitutes, while the second is written for the “putte di coro,” that is, the female musicians trained in the Ospedali of the city, which housed various categories of disadvantaged young girls. Primary sources reveal a contradictory narrative from the general public and visitors of that time, who were intrigued both by the ideal of purity represented by nuns and female pupils and by the possibility of breaking into their well-regulated lives. Nevertheless, the hermeneutics of the opera Le Amazoni nell’Isole Fortunate (Piccioli, 1679), organized by Marco Contarini in his villa in Terraferma, places the girls from the Ospedali within a framework perpetuating the patrician hegemony through control over representations. This study demonstrates the multiple educational implications of this framework: the construction of a Venetian national consciousness, the creation of the foreign myth of Italy as a land of music and mystery, the successful social integration of disadvantaged girls, the establishment of a pedagogical model and professionalization of musical talent, and finally, opportunities for the Maestri of the “cori” to experiment in their art.
