In the face of increasing demand for zero-touch networks to automate network management and operations, two pivotal concepts have emerged: "Learn to Slice" (L2S) and "Slice to Learn" (S2L). L2S involves leveraging Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to optimize network slicing for general services, while S2L centers on tailoring network slices to meet the specific needs of various AI services. The complexity of optimizing and automating S2L surpasses that of L2S due to intricate AI services' requirements, such as handling uncontrollable parameters, learning in adversarial conditions, and achieving long-term performance goals. This paper aims to automate and optimize S2L by integrating the two concepts of L2S and S2L by using an intelligent slicing agent to solve S2L. Indeed, we choose two candidate slicing agents, namely the Exploration and Exploitation (EXP3) and Deep Q-Network (DQN) from the Online Convex Optimization (OCO) and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) frameworks, and compare them. This paper introduces a comprehensive framework for Post-Disaster Search and Rescue (PDSR), aiming to optimize search and rescue operations leveraging Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The primary goal is to improve the precision and availability of sensing capabilities, particularly in various catastrophic scenarios. Central to this concept is the rapid deployment of UAV swarms equipped with diverse sensing, communication, and intelligence capabilities, functioning as an integrated system that incorporates multiple technologies and approaches for efficient detection of individuals buried beneath rubble or debris following a disaster. Within this framework, we propose architectural solution and address associated challenges to ensure optimal performance in real-world disaster scenarios. The proposed framework aims to achieve complete coverage of damaged areas significantly faster than traditional methods using a multi-tier swarm architecture. The forthcoming 6G networks will embrace a new realm of AI-driven services that requires innovative network slicing strategies, namely slicing for AI, which involves the creation of customized network slices to meet Quality of service (QoS) requirements of diverse AI services. This poses challenges due to time-varying dynamics of users' behavior and mobile networks. Thus, this paper proposes an online learning framework to optimize the allocation of computational and communication resources to AI services, while considering their unique key performance indicators (KPIs), such as accuracy, latency, and cost. We define a problem of optimizing the total accuracy while balancing conflicting KPIs, prove its NP-hardness, and propose an online learning framework for solving it in dynamic environments. We present a basic online solution and two variations employing a pre-learning elimination method for reducing the decision space to expedite the learning. Furthermore, we propose a biased decision space subset selection by incorporating prior knowledge to enhance the learning speed without compromising performance and present two alternatives of handling the selected subset. Our results depict the efficiency of the proposed solutions in converging to the optimal decisions, while reducing decision space and improving time complexity.

We introduce Atlas-Chat, the first-ever collection of LLMs specifically developed for dialectal Arabic. Focusing on Moroccan Arabic, also known as Darija, we construct our instruction dataset by consolidating existing Darija language resources, creating novel datasets both manually and synthetically, and translating English instructions with stringent quality control. Atlas-Chat-2B, 9B, and 27B models, fine-tuned on the dataset, exhibit superior ability in following Darija instructions and performing standard NLP tasks. Notably, our models outperform both state-of-the-art and Arabic-specialized LLMs like LLaMa, Jais, and AceGPT, e.g., our 9B model gains a 13% performance boost over a larger 13B model on DarijaMMLU, in our newly introduced evaluation suite for Darija covering both discriminative and generative tasks. Furthermore, we perform an experimental analysis of various fine-tuning strategies and base model choices to determine optimal configurations. All our resources are publicly accessible, and we believe our work offers comprehensive design methodologies of instruction-tuning for low-resource languages, which are often neglected in favor of data-rich languages by contemporary LLMs.

Autonomous robots use simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for efficient and safe navigation in various environments. LiDAR sensors are integral in these systems for object identification and localization. However, LiDAR systems though effective in detecting solid objects (e.g., trash bin, bottle, etc.), encounter limitations in identifying semitransparent or non-tangible objects (e.g., fire, smoke, steam, etc.) due to poor reflecting characteristics. Additionally, LiDAR also fails to detect features such as navigation signs and often struggles to detect certain hazardous materials that lack a distinct surface for effective laser reflection. In this paper, we propose a highly accurate stereo-vision approach to complement LiDAR in autonomous robots. The system employs advanced stereo vision-based object detection to detect both tangible and non-tangible objects and then uses simple machine learning to precisely estimate the depth and size of the object. The depth and size information is then integrated into the SLAM process to enhance the robot's navigation capabilities in complex environments. Our evaluation, conducted on an autonomous robot equipped with LiDAR and stereo-vision systems demonstrates high accuracy in the estimation of an object's depth and size. The metaverse, envisioned as the next digital frontier for avatar-based virtual interaction, involves high-performance models. In this dynamic environment, users' tasks frequently shift, requiring fast model personalization despite limited data. This evolution consumes extensive resources and requires vast data volumes. To address this, meta-learning emerges as an invaluable tool for metaverse users, with federated meta-learning (FML), offering even more tailored solutions owing to its adaptive capabilities. However, the metaverse is characterized by users heterogeneity with diverse data structures, varied tasks, and uneven sample sizes, potentially undermining global training outcomes due to statistical difference. Given this, an urgent need arises for smart coalition formation that accounts for these disparities. This paper introduces a dual game-theoretic framework for metaverse services involving meta-learners as workers to manage FML. A blockchain-based cooperative coalition formation game is crafted, grounded on a reputation metric, user similarity, and incentives. We also introduce a novel reputation system based on users' historical contributions and potential contributions to present tasks, leveraging correlations between past and new tasks. Finally, a Stackelberg game-based incentive mechanism is presented to attract reliable workers to participate in meta-learning, minimizing users' energy costs, increasing payoffs, boosting FML efficacy, and improving metaverse utility. Results show that our dual game framework outperforms best-effort, random, and non-uniform clustering schemes - improving training performance by up to 10%, cutting completion times by as much as 30%, enhancing metaverse utility by more than 25%, and offering up to 5% boost in training efficiency over non-blockchain systems, effectively countering misbehaving users., Comment: Accepted in IEEE Internet of Things Journal

We propose clustered federated multitask learning to address statistical challenges in non-independent and identically distributed data across clients. Our approach tackles complexities in hierarchical wireless networks by clustering clients based on data distribution similarities and assigning specialized models to each cluster. These complexities include slower convergence and mismatched model allocation due to hierarchical model aggregation and client selection. The proposed framework features a two-phase client selection and a two-level model aggregation scheme. It ensures fairness and effective participation using greedy and round-robin methods. This paper presents Haris, an advanced autonomous mobile robot system for tracking the location of vehicles in crowded car parks using license plate recognition. The system employs simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for autonomous navigation and precise mapping of the parking area, eliminating the need for GPS dependency. In addition, the system utilizes a sophisticated framework using computer vision techniques for object detection and automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) for reading and associating license plate numbers with location data. This information is subsequently synchronized with a back-end service and made accessible to users via a user-friendly mobile app, offering effortless vehicle location and alleviating congestion within the parking facility. The proposed system has the potential to improve the management of short-term large outdoor parking areas in crowded places such as sports stadiums. Today, wireless networks are becoming responsible for serving intelligent applications, such as extended reality and metaverse, holographic telepresence, autonomous transportation, and collaborative robots. Although current fifth-generation (5G) networks can provide high data rates in terms of Gigabytes/second, they cannot cope with the high demands of the aforementioned applications, especially in terms of the size of the high-quality live videos and images that need to be communicated in real-time. Therefore, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI)-based future sixth-generation (6G) networks, the semantic communication concept can provide the services demanded by these applications. Unlike Shannon's classical information theory, semantic communication urges the use of the semantics (meaningful contents) of the data in designing more efficient data communication schemes. Hence, in this paper, we model semantic communication as an energy minimization framework in heterogeneous wireless networks with respect to delay and quality-of-service constraints. Then, we propose a sub-optimal solution to the NP-hard combinatorial mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) by utilizing efficient techniques such as discrete optimization variables' relaxation. In addition, AI-based autoencoder and classifier are trained and deployed to perform semantic extraction, reconstruction, and classification services. Telemedicine applications have recently received substantial potential and interest, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote experience will help people get their complex surgery done or transfer knowledge to local surgeons, without the need to travel abroad. Even with breakthrough improvements in internet speeds, the delay in video streaming is still a hurdle in telemedicine applications. This imposes using image compression and region of interest (ROI) techniques to reduce the data size and transmission needs. This paper proposes a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) model that intelligently adapts the ROI size and non-ROI quality depending on the estimated throughput. The delay and structural similarity index measure (SSIM) comparison are used to assess the DRL model. The comparison findings and the practical application reveal that DRL is capable of reducing the delay by 13% and keeping the overall quality in an acceptable range. The ongoing modernization of the power system, involving new equipment installations and upgrades, exposes the power system to the introduction of malware into its operation through supply chain attacks. Supply chain attacks present a significant threat to power systems, allowing cybercriminals to bypass network defenses and execute deliberate attacks at the physical layer. Given the exponential advancements in machine intelligence, cybercriminals will leverage this technology to create sophisticated and adaptable attacks that can be incorporated into supply chain attacks. The vision of the upcoming 6G technologies, characterized by ultra-dense network, low latency, and fast data rate is to support Pervasive AI (PAI) using zero-touch solutions enabling self-X (e.g., self-configuration, self-monitoring, and self-healing) services. However, the research on 6G is still in its infancy, and only the first steps have been taken to conceptualize its design, investigate its implementation, and plan for use cases. Toward this end, academia and industry communities have gradually shifted from theoretical studies of AI distribution to real-world deployment and standardization. Still, designing an end-to-end framework that systematizes the AI distribution by allowing easier access to the service using a third-party application assisted by a zero-touch service provisioning has not been well explored. In this context, we introduce a novel platform architecture to deploy a zero-touch PAI-as-a-Service (PAIaaS) in 6G networks supported by a blockchain-based smart system. This platform aims to standardize the pervasive AI at all levels of the architecture and unify the interfaces in order to facilitate the service deployment across application and infrastructure domains, relieve the users worries about cost, security, and resource allocation, and at the same time, respect the 6G stringent performance requirements. Remote monitoring systems analyze the environment dynamics in different smart industrial applications, such as occupational health and safety, and environmental monitoring. Specifically, in industrial Internet of Things (IoT) systems, the huge number of devices and the expected performance put pressure on resources, such as computational, network, and device energy. Distributed training of Machine and Deep Learning (ML/DL) models for intelligent industrial IoT applications is very challenging for resource limited devices over heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNets). Hierarchical Federated Learning (HFL) performs training at multiple layers offloading the tasks to nearby Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) units. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient HFL framework enabled by Wireless Energy Transfer (WET) and designed for heterogeneous networks with massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless backhaul. Our energy-efficiency approach is formulated as a Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) problem, where we optimize the HFL device association and manage the wireless transmitted energy. However due to its high complexity, we design a Heuristic Resource Management Algorithm, namely H2RMA, that respects energy, channel quality, and accuracy constraints, while presenting a low computational complexity. We also improve the energy consumption of the network using an efficient device scheduling scheme. Finally, we investigate device mobility and its impact on the HFL performance. Our extensive experiments confirm the high performance of the proposed resource management approach in HFL over HetNets, in terms of training loss and grid energy costs.

The electric grid is an attractive target for cyberattackers given its critical nature in society. With the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks, effective grid defense will benefit from proactively identifying vulnerabilities and attack strategies. We develop a deep reinforcement learning-based method that recognizes vulnerabilities in load frequency control, an essential process that maintains grid security and reliability. We demonstrate how our method can synthesize a variety of attacks involving false data injection and load switching, while specifying the attack and threat models - providing insight into potential attack strategies and impact. We discuss how our approach can be employed for testing electric grid vulnerabilities. Moreover our method can be employed to generate data to inform the design of defense strategies and develop attack detection methods. For this, we design and compare a (deep learning-based) supervised attack detector with an unsupervised anomaly detector to highlight the benefits of developing defense strategies based on identified attack strategies.

The tight coupling between communication and control in cyber-physical systems is necessary to enable the complex regulation required to operate these systems. Unfortunately, cyberattackers can exploit network vulnerabilities to compromise communication and force unsafe decision-making and dynamics. If a cyberattack is not detected and isolated in a timely manner, the control process must balance adhering to the received measurement signals to maintain system operation and ensuring that temporary compromise of the signals does not force unsafe dynamics. For this purpose, we present and employ a safety critical controller based on control barrier functions to mitigate attacks against load frequency control in smart power grids. Smart grids are critical cyber-physical systems that are vital to our energy future. Smart grids' fault resilience is dependent on the use of advanced protection systems that can reliably adapt to changing conditions within the grid. The vast amount of operational data generated and collected in smart grids can be used to develop these protection systems. However, given the safety-criticality of protection, the algorithms used to analyze this data must be stable, transparent, and easily interpretable to ensure the reliability of the protection decisions. Additionally, the protection decisions must be fast, selective, simple, and reliable. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a data-driven protection strategy, based on Gaussian Discriminant Analysis, for fault detection and isolation. This strategy minimizes the communication requirements for time-inverse relays, facilitates their coordination, and optimizes their settings. The interpretability of the protection decisions is a key focus of this paper. Although Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have become the backbone technology of several ubiquitous applications, their deployment in resource-constrained machines, e.g., Internet of Things (IoT) devices, is still challenging. To satisfy the resource requirements of such a paradigm, collaborative deep inference with IoT synergy was introduced. However, the distribution of DNN networks suffers from severe data leakage. Various threats have been presented, including black-box attacks, where malicious participants can recover arbitrary inputs fed into their devices. Although many countermeasures were designed to achieve privacy-preserving DNN, most of them result in additional computation and lower accuracy. In this paper, we present an approach that targets the security of collaborative deep inference via re-thinking the distribution strategy, without sacrificing the model performance. Particularly, we examine different DNN partitions that make the model susceptible to black-box threats and we derive the amount of data that should be allocated per device to hide proprieties of the original input. We formulate this methodology, as an optimization, where we establish a trade-off between the latency of co-inference and the privacy-level of data. Extreme edge computing (EEC) refers to the endmost part of edge computing wherein computational tasks and edge services are deployed only on extreme edge devices (EEDs). EEDs are consumer or user-owned devices that offer computational resources, which may consist of wearable devices, personal mobile devices, drones, etc. Such devices are opportunistically or naturally present within the proximity of other user devices. Hence, utilizing EEDs to deploy edge services or perform computational tasks fulfills the promise of edge computing of bringing the services and computation as close as possible to the end-users. However, the lack of knowledge and control over the EEDs computational resources raises a red flag, since executing the computational tasks successfully becomes doubtful. To this end, we aim to study the EEDs randomness from the computational perspective, and how reliable is an EED in terms of executing the tasks on time. Specifically, we provide a reliability model for the EEDs that takes into account the probabilistic nature of the availability of the EEDs' computational resources. Moreover, we study the reliability of executing different types of computational tasks in EEC systems that are distributed across the EEDs. Lastly, we carry out experimental results to analyze the EEDs and the EEC systems' reliability behavior in different scenarios.

The rapid production of mobile devices along with the wireless applications boom is continuing to evolve daily. This motivates the exploitation of wireless spectrum using multiple Radio Access Technologies (multi-RAT) and developing innovative network selection techniques to cope with such intensive demand while improving Quality of Service (QoS). Thus, we propose a distributed framework for dynamic network selection at the edge level, and resource allocation at the Radio Access Network (RAN) level, while taking into consideration diverse applications' characteristics. In particular, our framework employs a deep Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (DMARL) algorithm, that aims to maximize the edge nodes' quality of experience while extending the battery lifetime of the nodes and leveraging adaptive compression schemes. Indeed, our framework enables data transfer from the network's edge nodes, with multi-RAT capabilities, to the cloud in a cost and energy-efficient manner, while maintaining QoS requirements of different supported applications. Our results depict that our solution outperforms state-of-the-art techniques of network selection in terms of energy consumption, latency, and cost.
