Abstract Background The diagnosis of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is based on the existence of cochlear microphonics or otoacoustic emissions, as well as aberrant or nonexistent-evoked auditory brainstem responses. The outcomes of cochlear implantation (CI) are thought to be significantly influenced by genetic reasons in ANSD. Objective The purpose of this systematic review was to gather more information regarding the relationship between various genetic variants and the outcomes of cochlear implantation in adult and pediatric patients with ANSD (both syndromic and non-syndromic). Methods Electronic databases “Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Europe PMC, and Cochrane Library” were searched for this systematic review. For cohort studies, the Newcastle–Ottawa scale (NOS score) was used to assess the quality of the retrieved research. The standardized mean difference produced by the Cohen’s d or Hedges’ g tests was used to assess the effect size measure. Results This comprehensive study showed that OTOF, GJB2, ATPA3, and OPA1 were among the genetic variants with improved CI outcomes. On the other hand, other genetic mutations displayed variable results (TMPRSS3) or worse CI outcomes (PJVK). For OTOF mutations, CI had a moderate effect (Hedges’ g = 0.7), which led to good cochlear implant outcomes. The results of the GJB2 cochlear implant showed a significant effect size when pre- and post-implant assessments were compared. The results of CI for TMPRSS3 mutations were inconsistent, with one study demonstrating a negligible effect (Hedges’ g = 0.2), and another study found a negative impact (Hedges’ g = − 2.17). Poor CI results were indicated by PJVK mutations impacting CI outcomes. A significant impact was observed when comparing pre- and postimplantation outcomes (Cohen’s d > 1) in cases of ATP1A3 mutations (CAPOS syndrome) and OPA1 mutations. In addition, early implantation produced better results than late implantation in certain genetic variations. Conclusion Some genetic variants, such as OTOF, GJB2, ATPA3, and OPA1, had improved CI outcomes, according to data extraction and synthesis of the systematic review’s findings. Conversely, PJVK displayed worse CI results and inconsistent results for TMPRSS3 genetic mutations.

Purpose – This paper investigates the effect of state-society relations on the industrially-related growth paths of developed countries. Design/methodology/approach – It introduces a novel theoretical framework, the state-business-labor relations (SBLR) framework, where four main actors are identified: the state, big businesspersons or tycoons, owners and managers of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) or Entrepreneurs and labor. Different SBLR categories or modes are introduced depending on levels of coordination and power relations between the studied actors. The paper then investigates how these SBLR modes, through adopting various policies targeting the industrial sector, lead to different growth paths. Rather than focusing only on economic growth, this research regards a growth path as a matrix of the performance in long-run growth and equality of distribution. Findings – Using regression analysis and statistical data, the results suggest that the Co-Balanced mode, having higher levels of coordination and lower favoritism, leads to the best growth path among the four introduced modes, especially with its emphasis on high levels of venture capital availability and easiness of starting business. while the Lib-Capture mode, characterized by lower coordination and higher favoritism, seems to have the worst growth path and the best implemented policy for this mode is suggested to be high profit taxes that seem to counter the negative impact of the existing high levels of favoritism. Research limitations/implications – Despite the important findings that this research has reached, this paper is mainly meant to open a further investigation into this topic and open this dimension that the research on VoC and political economy have under-researched. A deeper investigation of SBLR typologies that could only be possible by having richer datasets with more data on coordination for the whole world, rather than only the advanced economies, would further our understanding of the dynamics that shape the growth paths of different countries of the world. Practical implications – To realize the best industrial growth path, fighting favoritism should be an important objective. The negative impact of favoritism on innovation could not be disregarded in the eve of the fourth industrial revolution, where innovation is increasingly pivotal to future industrial development. Actively engaging societal groups in the policymaking process is important in addressing their concerns and balancing them at the same time. This should lead to the double benefit of formulating better policies that should foster growth as well as provide better distribution of this growth. High levels of coordination should help in realizing this objective. Yet, this could only be possible if societal groups are free to associate and aggregate their power and when there are means of preventing one actor from gaining more favorite treatment and exclusive influence over policymakers. The presence of both powerful and broadly represented business associations and labor unions and the existence of a government interested in coordinating their efforts-rather than letting itself be controlled by one group at the expense of the others-should help in the realization of the best growth path. Thus, institutional reform that empowers societal groups and enables them to defend their interests as well as fights all forms of corruption should lead to the realization of a more prosperous and equitable industrial development, with the “re-industrialization” of the developed world being no exception. The technological and social challenges of intensive automation and digitalization accompanying the fourth industrial revolution make the envisaged institutional reform more urgent. Originality/value – This paper is introducing a novel theoretical framework for studying the effect of state-society relations, particularly SBLR, on the industrial growth paths of developed countries. It integrates three important bodies of literature in order to build a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of state-society relations and their economic consequences. These are the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC), State-Business Relations (SBR) and Industrial Relations. The SBLR framework differentiates between tycoons and entrepreneurs, an important distinction that often goes unnoticed. Different SBLR categories or modes are introduced, depending on levels of coordination and power relations between the actors. It is proposed in this research that the effect on growth paths goes beyond the simple dichotomy between CMEs and LMEs usually present in the literature of VoC and that power relations provide an essential complementary dimension in explaining this causality.

Abstract Monitoring heavy metal accumulation is essential for assessing the viability of aquatic ecosystems. Our methodology involved integrating analysis of immunological, stress, inflammatory, and growth-related gene expression in male and female Nile tilapia with on-site recordings of physicochemical parameters. Additionally, we assessed the effect of different physicochemical parameters on heavy metal bioavailability and residual concentration in fish and water. Samples of fish and water were gathered from three different localities: Lake Brullus, a brackish lake sited in northern Egypt; Lake Nasser, an artificial freshwater reservoir located in southern Egypt; and El-Qanater El-Khayria, a middle-freshwater location belonging to the Rashid branch of the river Nile. The assessment of heavy metal residues (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Ni) revealed that their concentrations were higher in fish specimens compared to their counterparts in water (except for Ni). In addition, Lake Brullus emerges as the most polluted area, exhibiting elevated levels of heavy metals concentrations in water and fish specimens. In contrast, Lake Nasser showed the least degree of heavy metals pollution. Gene expression analysis revealed gender-specific responses to heavy metal exposure at the three investigated water bodies. The expression of hepatic antioxidant genes (GST and MT) and inflammatory-related genes (CC-chemokine and TNFα) increased in males compared to females. In females, the immune and pro-inflammatory-related genes (IgM and CXC2-chemokine) transcripts were upregulated. Additionally, growth-related genes were downregulated in both Lake Brullus and El-Qanater; on the contrary, fish samples from Lake Nasser exhibited a normal expression pattern of growth-related genes. Stress-related genes (HSP70 and HSP27) showed significant downregulation in gills of both genders from Lake Brullus. The minimal presence of heavy metal contaminants in Lake Nasser seems to endorse the normal patterns of gene expression across all gene categories. A potential gender-specific gene expression response towards pollution was noticed in genes associated with inflammation and antioxidant activities. This highlights the importance of considering gender-related responses in future environmental assessments.

Abstract Introduction Bepirovirsen is a novel antisense oligonucleotide in development for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection therapy. Understanding the impact that clinical characteristics may have on bepirovirsen exposure is important for determining efficacious and well-tolerated dosing regimens. This analysis evaluated demographics and clinical characteristics associated with bepirovirsen exposure using a population pharmacokinetic (PK) analysis. Methods Population PK analyses were conducted using pooled data from three phase 1/2 clinical studies (NCT03020745/NCT02981602/NCT04449029) to construct a structural PK model for bepirovirsen that adequately described plasma concentration–time profiles and identify covariates that affect systemic exposure. The final population PK model was used to simulate bepirovirsen exposure measures to inform exposures at different dose levels and within different subpopulations. Results Bepirovirsen PK data were well-described by a linear, three-compartment model with first-order absorption and absorption delay. Chronic HBV infection status, body weight, and Asian versus non-Asian race were key covariates included in the final model. Visual inspection of correlation scatter plots confirmed general agreement between observed and predicted data from the studies. In simulations, bepirovirsen systemic exposure was dosed proportionally and predicted to be almost completely washed out by 12 weeks following the final 300-mg dose. Differences in body weight, Asian race, or disease status did not result in clinically relevant differences in exposure. Conclusions This analysis demonstrated that the linear three-compartmental model accurately described bepirovirsen PK data. The lack of clinically relevant differences seen in exposure indicate that dose adjustments are not recommended for bepirovirsen based on demographics or clinical characteristics.

Abstract The lie-detection tests are traditionally carried out by well-trained experts using polygraph machines. However, it is time-consuming, invasive, and, overall, a cumbersome process, not admissible by the court of law. Trained individuals can easily flaunt these tests. On the other hand, facial thermal imaging could be more effective as it is noninvasive and could be a stealth method of tracking the facial blood flow patterns, which have been proven to detect deceit. This paper presents a method based on facial thermal imaging to detect deception in human subjects. The major issue in such research is the lack of proper real-life databases which emulate the crime scenes. In this paper, first, we have developed a database based on almost real-life theft incidents with due diligence using isolated subjects over a period of time at a government hospital under the plea of free health checkup. The experiment has been conducted at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal, India, with proper ethical committee approval. The participants are selected at the behest of the police department with habitual crime records. Most of them have been repeatedly charged with petty crimes of pick-pocketing and stealing. They are invited individually at different instances of time under the plea of medical checkup where they have been enticed to steal cash. It is followed by a two-stage process, a friendly interaction followed by a slightly tougher interrogation. Their forehead and periorbital region skin surface temperature are recorded by a hidden thermal camera. Upon analysis, conspicuous changes in the temperature profile and blood flow pattern have been observed in the individuals who stole money and those who did not.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based vectors are used clinically for gene transfer and persist as extrachromosomal episomes. A small fraction of vector genomes integrate into the host genome, but the theoretical risk of tumorigenesis depends on vector regulatory features. A mouse model was used to investigate integration profiles of an AAV serotype 5 (AAV5) vector produced using Sf and HEK293 cells that mimic key features of valoctocogene roxaparvovec (AAV5-hFVIII-SQ), a gene therapy for severe hemophilia A. The majority (95%) of vector genome reads were derived from episomes, and mean (± standard deviation) integration frequency was 2.70 ± 1.26 and 1.79 ± 0.86 integrations per 1,000 cells for Sf- and HEK293-produced vector. Longitudinal integration analysis suggested integrations occur primarily within 1 week, at low frequency, and their abundance was stable over time. Integration profiles were polyclonal and randomly distributed. No major differences in integration profiles were observed for either vector production platform, and no integrations were associated with clonal expansion. Integrations were enriched near transcription start sites of genes highly expressed in the liver (p = 1 × 10−4) and less enriched for genes of lower expression. We found no evidence of tumorigenesis or fibrosis caused by the vector integrations.

Abstract Background Workers in the field of radiation therapy are exposed to radiation hazards, and it is necessary to take precautions to limit the radiation dose to nursing staff and physicists. Objective To evaluate the external dose rate (EDR), effective whole-body dose (EHD) and hand equivalent dose (HED) for facilitating staff from radioiodine-131 (RAI-131) ablation therapy patients. Methods One hundred and eighty patients were selected from two radiotherapy centers in Cairo, Egypt in this study and divided into three groups, Group-A, Group-B and Group-C according to administered activities of (RAI-131) of 3700 MBq, 4440 MBq and 5550 MBq for ablation therapy patients respectively. The EDR, EHD and HED were measured using electronic dosimeters. Results The average EDR were 79.1 ± 12.1, 22.7 ± 8.5, 7.0 ± 4.0, 2.9 ± 1.3 and 1.9 ± .9.0 μSv h−1 for group-A, and about 87.8 ± 14.0, 25.6 ± 9.0, 8.1 ± 5.0, 3.4 ± 2.0 and 2.4 ± 1.0 μSv h−1 for group-B and were 93.5 ± 17.0, 31.6 ± 11.0, 10.1 ± 7.0, 4.7 ± 3.0 and 3.4 ± 1.5 μSv h−1 for group-C at 2 h, second, third, fourth and fifth days, respectively after administration of RAI-131. The average annual effective doses were 2.76 ± 0.09 and 1.55 ± 0.05 mSv at center 1, and were about 2.96 ± 0.09 and 1.71 ± 0.06 mSv at center 2 for physicists and nurses, respectively. Conclusion The EDR as well as the EHD and the HED received by radiation therapy workers up to the fifth day of administered activity RAI-131 were within the limits of values recommended by the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP).

Abstract Background Hypertension may cause target organ damage (TOD). Target blood pressure (BP) management may not be appropriate in some conditions. Aim We aim to assess the impact of targeted BP management in severe hypertension on renal TOD. Patients & methods This is a prospective cohort study involving patients admitted due to severe hypertension (BP > 180/120) associated with any symptoms. The study involved patients referred to the ICU in our tertiary center during the period between August 2017 and February 2018. All patients underwent target BP treatment according to recent guidelines. Hs-Troponin T (hs-TNT) and serum creatinine (s.creat) were measured in all patients on admission and 24 h later. Patients were divided into Group A (with initial normal hs-TNT) and Group B (with initial high hs-TNT). The main outcome was in-hospital renal-related morbidity (including renal failure). Results Four hundred seventy consecutive patients with hypertensive crises were involved in the study. Group B had a significantly higher incidence of in-hospital mortality (4 patients) and renal TOD (acute renal dysfunction) than Group A (P value = 0.001 and 0.000 respectively). There was a significant difference between initial s.creat on admission and follow-up s.creat values in Group B with significant elevation of their s.creat on the following 24 h (P = 0.002), while this difference is insignificant in Group A (P = 0.34). There was a significant positive correlation between hs-TNT and the follow-up s.creat (P = 0.004). Conclusion In severe HTN, hs-TNT may be elevated due to marked afterload. Patients with severe HTN and high hs-TNT have higher s.creat values, which are associated with an increased risk of renal failure and in-hospital mortality if their BP decreases acutely to the guideline-target BP. Using biomarkers during the management of emergency HTN should be considered before following clinical guidelines. However, our findings do underscore the potential utility of hs-TNT as an indicator for risk stratification in patients with severe or emergency HTN.

Snakebite envenomation remains an important, yet a neglected public health issue in most tropical and subtropical countries. Underdeveloped medical infrastructure, suboptimal medical services, poor documentation and failure to make snake-related injury a mandatory notifiable disease are important contributing factors. The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is a medically significant species encountered in Malaysia however, there have been few publications from the clinical perspective. The objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of King Cobra related injuries, geographical distribution, clinical presentation, type and frequency of antivenom utilization and the management outcome. This is a cross-sectional study of confirmed King Cobra related injuries consulted to Remote Envenomation Consultation Services (RECS) from 2015 to 2020. Data were extracted from the RECS database and descriptively analyzed. A total of 32 cases of King Cobra bite were identified. Most cases were from Peninsular Malaysia with the most frequent from the state of Pahang (n = 9, 28.1%). Most patients got bitten while attempting to catch or play with the snake (68.8%). Signs and symptoms of envenomation were documented in 24 (75.0%) cases and the most frequent systemic manifestation was ptosis (n = 13, 40.6%). Tracheal intubation and ventilatory support were required in 13 (40.6%) patients. Antivenom was administered to 22 (68.8%) patients with most (25.0%) receiving 10 vials (1 dose). The commonest antivenom used was monospecific King Cobra antivenom (50.0%) from Thai Red Cross. There was one death documented due to complications from necrotizing fasciitis and septicemia. Public awareness of the dangers and proper handling of King Cobras needs to be emphasised. Timely administration of the appropriate antivenom is the definitive treatment and leads to favorable outcomes.

Abstract This study aims to evaluate the impact of utilization of self-service cash deposit machines (SSCDMs) on the financial performance of Tanzanian commercial banks, focusing on key parameters like capital adequacy, asset quality, management quality, earning ability, and liquidity. The research, conducted over six years (2017–2022), utilizes a CAMEL analysis and combines secondary data review with primary data collected through interviews. Four commercial banks' audited financial statements serve as the primary data source. The findings indicate a mixed impact of SSCDM utilization on bank performance, with some banks experiencing positive effects on capital adequacy and liquidity ratios, while others show performance fluctuations. Overall, SSCDMs are found to enhance operational efficiency and convenience, attracting more customers and increasing deposit volumes. However, potential liquidity management challenges are noted. This study contributes valuable insights to the evolving Tanzanian banking sector, aiding policymakers and bank management in informed decision-making regarding self-service banking technologies. Abstract This study investigates the role of financial literacy (FL), perceived access to finance (PAF), information communication technology (ICT) usage, and digitization in alleviating the level of credit constraint that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) face in an emerging market. We draw on the economic research theories of human capital, knowledge-based view, and lifecycle hypothesis to explain the relationship between the variables. Using survey data collected from 333 MSME importers in Qatar—a country with heavy reliance on foreign goods—we find strong evidence that FL, PAF, ICT usage, and digitization are key determinants of Qatari MSME access to credit. In particular, PAF and FL are significant and have their expected signs in almost all the Probit regressions. For ICT usage and digitization, although they are key determinants of credit constraints, the findings are more sensitive and dependent on the type of financing and the resulting type of credit constraint.

Background: Skin diseases are usually chronic in nature but not life-threatening. They affect the well-being and pose a threat to the general health of the affected animals. Aim: This study aimed to investigate epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of ectoparasitic infestations in dogs in a number of Egyptian governorates. Methods: Ninety dogs (58 males and 32 females) aged from one month to eleven years from six Egyptian governorates were clinically examined during the years 2022 and 2023. Skin scraping samples were taken from all examined dogs, and deep ear swab specimens from five dogs suspected to have ear mites were obtained and parasitologically examined. Different ectoparasites were classified according to their morphological features. Twenty dogs were treated in four different patterns of administration of local, systemic, and supportive medications. Results: The prevalence of ectoparasite infestation in examined dogs was 64% (58/90). The majority of ectoparasitic infestations (50/58) were single, while the rest (8/58) were mixed. Ninespecies of ectoparasites of fourtaxa were identified: a tick species (Rhipicephalus sanguineus); which had the highest prevalence among isolated ectoparasites from dogs (29%, 26/90), three flea species (Ctenocephalides canis, Ctenocephalides orientis and Ctenocephalides felis) isolated from 18 out of 90 cases (20%), two types of dog chewing louse species (Trichodectes canis and Heterodoxus spiniger) isolated from 2/90 (2.2%) and three mite species: Demodex canis (18/90, 20%), Sarcoptes scabei var. canis (5/90, 6%) and Otodectes cynotis (2/90, 2.2%). ABSTRACTBackground Preoperative poor nutrition greatly raises the risk of complications and increases length of stay (LOS). Glutamine deficiency may impair immune functions, reduce myocardial adenosine triphosphate–adenosine diphosphate (ATP-ADP) substrate and decrease myocardial glutathione level. We evaluated the effects of preoperative glutamine administration in patients undergoing mitral valve replacement surgery upon cardiac and renal outcomes or hospital/ICU LOS.Methods This prospective randomized double-blinded study included 60 patients above 18 up to 60 years undergoing mitral valve replacement. For 3 days preoperatively, Group N patients received glutamine intravenously 0.4 g/kg/day while Group C patients received intravenous normal saline as placebo. The primary outcome was to assess the effects of glutamine on cardiac function as reflected on proBNP (brain natriuretic peptide) during 4 postoperative days. Secondary outcomes included renal function, vasoactive inotropic score, duration of mechanical ventilation, and hospital/ICU stays.Results Postoperative proBNP was significantly lower in Group N during the entire period. It was significantly decreased on the first postoperative day in both groups in comparison to the preoperative values. No significant changes were recorded regarding renal functions, and duration of mechanical ventilation between groups. Also, there was signifiacant difference between the two studied groups regarding the vasoactive inotropic score at the 12th, 18th, 24th and 48th hours with lower scores in Group N. ICU and hospital stays were significantly lower in Group N than Group C.Conclusion Short term of preoperative intravenous glutamine 0.4 g/kg/day decreased the postoperative proBNP level and hospital/ICU stays in mitral valve replacement surgery. No significant implication was reported upon postoperative human NGAL level or kidney functions.

Abstract The aim of this research was to produce Rayeb milk, a bio-fermented milk product that has important benefits for health and nutrition. The Rayeb milk was divided into five different treatments: T1 from cow milk, T2 from quinoa milk, T3 from a mixture of cow and quinoa milk (50%:50%), T4 from a mixture of cow and quinoa milk (75%:25%), and T5 from a mixture of cow and quinoa milk (25%:75%). As a starting culture, ABT-5 culture was used. The results demonstrated that blending quinoa milk with cow milk increased the total solids, fat, total protein, pH, acetaldehyde, and diacetyl values of the resulting Rayeb milk. Additionally, the total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, minerals, and amino acids—particularly important amino acids—in Rayeb milk with quinoa milk were higher. In Rayeb milk prepared from a cow and quinoa milk mixture, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum were highly stimulated. All Rayeb milk samples, particularly those that contained quinoa milk, possessed more bifidobacteria than the recommended count of 106 cfu g−1 for use as a probiotic. Based on the sensory evaluation results, it is possible to manufacture a bio-Rayeb milk acceptable to the consumer and has a high nutritional and health values using a mixture of cow milk and quinoa milk (75%:25% or 50%:50%) and ABT-5 culture.

Schizencephaly, a rare congenital cerebral deformity that affects the cerebral mantle and is caused by both hereditary and acquired factors, is defined by a cleft that spans the entire cerebral hemisphere from the lateral ventricle to the cerebral cortex. Adult symptoms have only been described in a few cases in the literature. Hemiparesis, developmental delays, or seizures are manifestations of the clinical presentation, which is dependent on the size and location of the lesion. Neuroimaging investigations, particularly MRI, enable the diagnosis and rule out other causes. Usually discovered at birth, this entity begins to show up in the first several years. To prevent receiving the wrong treatment, the ailment must be correctly diagnosed. We report the observation of a 43-year-old patient with partial epileptic seizures but with an asymptomatic childhood, in relation to unilateral closed cleft schizencephaly associated with gray matter heterotopia. In this case, we highlight the importance of neuroimaging, in particular MRI on the diagnosis of this entity and to identify the associated anomalies.

A disco-rectangular volume-fraction-of-fluid (VOF) model tank of a prismatic size is considered here for investigating the severe effect of overhead baffles made of three different materials, nylon, polyamide, and polylactic acid. In this work, the overdamped, undamped, and nominal damped motion of baffles and their effect are studied. In this research, the behaviour of different material baffles based on the sloshing effect and natural frequency of each baffle excited in damped, undamped, and overdamped cases is studied. VOF modelling is carried out in moving Yeoh model mesh with fluid–structure interaction between the water models for various baffle plates. The results of the water volume distribution and baffle displacement operating between a sloshing time of 0 and 1 s are recorded. Also, a strong investigation is carried out for the water volume suspended on overhead baffles by three different material selections.

Abstract Hypertriglyceridemia‐induced acute pancreatitis (HTG‐AP) is the third most common cause of AP after gallstones and alcohol. Supportive measures, intravenous insulin, and plasmapheresis are possible treatment modalities for HTG‐AP; however, definitive guidelines evaluating the best therapeutic approach are not clearly established. We present a rare case of a 42‐year‐old male without known comorbidities who was found to have HTG‐AP. Despite early initiation of intravenous insulin and plasmapheresis and the initial decline in his triglycerides level, his condition was complicated by necrotizing pancreatitis and subsequent multi‐organ failure. Future studies are warranted to evaluate the role of plasmapheresis in HTG‐AP and its efficacy.

Background: Primary dysmenorrhea is associated with poorer quality of life; however, the causal mechanism remains unclear. A vast body of literature supports the use of oral probiotics for relief from the symptoms of endometriosis; however, to our knowledge, no study has prescribed probiotics for primary dysmenorrhea. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of 3-month supplementation with oral probiotics on quality of life and inflammatory markers in women with primary dysmenorrhea. Design: Randomized placebo-controlled trial. Methods: A total of 72 patients (36 patients in each arm) were randomized to receive either oral sachets containing 5 billion colony-forming units each of Lactobacillus acidophilus BCMC (BCrobes Microbial Cells) 12130, Lactobacillus casei subsp BCMC 12313, Lactobacillus lactis BCMC 12451, Bifidobacterium bifidum BCMC 02290, Bifidobacterium longum BCMC 02120, and Bifidobacterium infantis BCMC 02129 each or placebo twice daily for 3 months. Main outcome measures were visual analog scale, verbal rating scale, physical and mental health scores using Short-Form 12-Item version 2 questionnaire, frequency of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, and changes in inflammatory markers (interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and tumor necrosis factor alpha) before and after treatment. Results: There was no significant difference in the quality of life scores between the probiotic and placebo groups. Both groups showed significant improvement in pain (visual analog scale) and severity (verbal rating scale) scores but the probiotic group had much lower nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use (odds ratio: 0.69, 95% confidence interval: 0.26–1.83) and better mental health scores (mean change: 6.5, p = 0.03 versus 6.1, p = 0.08) than the placebo group. There was a significant confounding effect of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use on quality of life scores. No significant difference was found in inflammatory cytokines. Conclusion: Tested oral probiotics improved mental health and potentially reduced the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; however, there was no significant change in inflammatory markers. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to confirm the findings. Registration: This study is registered under ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04119011).

Diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis (DNH) is an infrequent condition characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of multiple cutaneous hemangiomas and the involvement of 3 or more organs. DNH is suspected when multiple hemangiomas are identified on the skin of the infant. Although it is benign in nature, DNH can lead to critical and life-threatening complications. Diagnosis primarily relies on clinical evaluation with a significant emphasis on imaging techniques. In this case report, we present an unusual pediatric case of diffuse infantile hemangioendothelioma, for which the investigative approach included ultrasound and CT scans. These imaging methods were instrumental in revealing the presence of lesions in the liver, thyroid, and brain, ultimately playing a pivotal role in making the diagnosis of DNH. A positive clinical and biological improvement was observed with corticosteroid treatment during a 3-month follow-up.
