Indonesia memiliki potensi zakat yang sangat besar, selain memiliki jumlah umat Islam terbesar di dunia, Indonesia juga merupakan negara yang paling dermawan di dunia. Namun kenyataannya dalam bidang pengelolaan keuangan untuk sosial syariah khususnya zakat masih jauh dari harapan. Pada tahun 2019, Indonesia hanya mampu menghimpun 4.39% dari total potensi dana zakat dan 85% dari dana yang dihimpun dapat disalurkan. Penggunaan dana Zakat guna mencapai kesejahteraan sosial memiliki dampak yang sangat signifikan bagi masyarakat miskin dan membutuhkan. Dalam konteks yang lebih luas, hal ini akan berdampak tidak langsung pada masyarakat dan perekonomian Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian dilakukan untuk menguji dan membuktikan pengaruh zakat yang berhasil dihimpun terhadap kemiskinan, kesejahteraan, pendapatan dan pertumbuhan ekonomi di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif yaitu pendekatan analisis meta yang digunakan untuk menguji hipotesis dan menjelaskan hasil perhitungan yang telah dilakukan. Hasil meta analisis menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan signifikan negatif penyaluran zakat terhadap kemiskinan yaitu dengan nilai (r̅) sebesar -0.1510. Hubungan signifikan positif antara penyaluran zakat terhadap kesejahteraan dengan nilai (r̅) yaitu 0.6027, pendapatan dengan nilai (r̅) yaitu 0.3958, dan pertumbuhan ekonomi dengan nilai (r̅) yaitu 0.4318.

Siberut Island, Mt. Talamau, Rimbo Panti Nature Reserve, and intervening locations in West Sumatra Province were visited during two expeditions in 2018-2019 by ornithologists from the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB) - Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science (LSUMNS), and Andalas University. The main objective of these expeditions was to obtain data and tissue-subsample rich museum specimens for morphological and genetic studies of phylogeny and population genetics of Southeast Asian birds aimed at understanding the causes of avian diversification in the region. We also observed, photographed, and audio-recorded numerous bird species during the expeditions and archived these data. In total, 285 species were identified, and specimen material was collected from 13 species and 26 subspecies not previously represented in tissue resource collections. Here, we provide complete lists of birds found at each location, highlight distributional discoveries, and note cases of potential taxonomic, ecological, and conservation interest.

To help resolve phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships of Southeast Asian birds, we have collected specimens in Borneo, Sumatra, and Java for phylogenetic and morphological study. Here, we compare mitochondrial ND2 gene sequences from some of these new specimens to sequences obtained in previous studies to shed light on genealogical relationships in nine passerine clades: Erythropitta venusta/granatina/ussheri (pittas); Dicrurus hottentottus (drongos); Alophoixus bulbuls; Napothera, Turdinus and Pellorneum babblers; Anthipes flycatchers; Brachypteryx shortwings; and Myophonus whistling thrushes. These comparisons resolve or shed substantial light on taxonomic problems in pittas, Alophoixus, Napothera, Dicrurus, Brachypteryx, and Myophonus, and they confirm assumed (but previously unquantified) genetic relationships within Turdinus and Anthipes. The resulting trees also allow us to (1) suggest improved taxonomic arrangements in several groups, (2) confirm the rediscovery of a “lost” species within Napothera, and (3) provide the basis for the description of a new subspecies of Alophoixus.

To reveal the diversity of Indonesian bent-toed geckos, we pay attention to Kalimantan (Borneo)—an island which has received less attention than other Indonesian islands such as Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, the Moluccas, and the Lesser Sunda archipelagos. About 30 years after Hikida (1990) described three new Cyrtodactylus from Borneo, four more species were described, namely C. limajalur and C. muluensis in 2019, and C. hantu and C. miriensis in 2021, all by Davis et al. Through examination of the collection at MZB and three addition specimens collected from Tawau, we found several undescribed species, one of which we describe here. This new species is easily differentiated from all other congeners by the combination of the following characters: maximum SVL of at least 65.8 mm; no tubercles on dorsal surface of upper arm; tubercles present in the ventrolateral body folds; 28–30 paravertebral tubercles; 17–20 longitudinal dorsal tubercle rows; 39–46 ventral scale rows at midbody; 17–19 subdigital lamellae on fourth toe; precloacal pit with 5–7 pores in males arranged in a wide Λ-shape but absent in females; no enlarged transverse median subcaudals; paired dark brown semilunar-shaped markings on the upper nape. Further study is needed to reveal its molecular phylogenetic position and biogeographical history.

We here describe a new species of Myzomela honeyeater from the Lesser Sunda island of Alor (southeast Indonesia). The new species is phylogenetically most closely related to Myzomela kuehni from the adjacent island of Wetar and most closely resembles that species in plumage. However, it differs in important morphological, bioacoustic and ecological characteristics. The discovery of a new bird species on Alor is of great biogeographic importance and elevates this island to the status of an Endemic Bird Area. The new Alor Myzomela is restricted to montane eucalypt woodland mostly above 900 m elevation and is currently known from few sites across the island. Based on its occurrence records and human population trends in the highlands of Alor Island, we recommend classification under the IUCN threat status endangered.

Intraspecific polymorphism in birds, especially plumage colour polymorphism, and the mechanisms that control it are an area of active research in evolutionary biology. The black-headed bulbul (Brachypodius atriceps) is a polymorphic species with two distinct morphs, yellow and grey. This species inhabits the mainland and virtually all continental islands of Southeast Asia where yellow morphs predominate, but on two islands in the Sunda region, Bawean and Maratua, grey morphs are common or exclusive. Here, we generated a high-quality reference genome of a yellow individual and resequenced genomes of multiple individuals of both yellow and grey morphs to study the genetic basis of coloration and population history of the species. Using PCA and STRUCTURE analysis, we found the Maratua Island population (which is exclusively grey) to be distinct from all other B. atriceps populations, having been isolated c. 1.9 million years ago (Ma). In contrast, Bawean grey individuals (a subset of yellow and grey individuals on that island) are embedded within an almost panmictic Sundaic clade of yellow birds. Using FST and dxy to compare variable genomic segments between Maratua and yellow individuals, we located peaks of divergence and identified candidate loci involved in the colour polymorphism. Tests of selection among coding-proteins in high FST regions, however, did not indicate selection on the candidate genes. Overall, we report on some loci that are potentially responsible for the grey/yellow polymorphism in a species that otherwise shows little genetic diversification across most of its range.

Biodiversity knowledge is widely heterogeneous across the Earth's biomes. Some areas, due to their remoteness and difficult access, present large taxonomic knowledge gaps. Mostly located in the tropics, these areas have frequently experienced a fast development of anthropogenic activities during the last decades and are therefore of high conservation concerns. The biodiversity hotspots of Southeast Asia exemplify the stakes faced by tropical countries. While the hotspots of Sundaland (Java, Sumatra, Borneo) and Wallacea (Sulawesi, Moluccas) have long attracted the attention of biologists and conservationists alike, extensive parts of the Sahul area, in particular the island of New Guinea, have been much less explored biologically. Here, we describe the results of a DNA-based inventory of aquatic and terrestrial vertebratecommunities, which was the objective of a multidisciplinary expedition to the Bird's Head Peninsula (West Papua, Indonesia) conducted between 17 October and 20 November 2014. This expedition resulted in the assembly of 1005 vertebrate DNA barcodes. Based on the use of multiple species-delimitation methods (GMYC, PTP, RESL, ABGD), 264 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) were delineated, among which 75 were unidentified and an additional 48 were considered cryptic. Archipelagoes serve as important ‘natural laboratories’ which facilitate the study of island radiations and contribute to the understanding of evolutionary processes. The white-eye genus Zosterops is a classical example of a ‘great speciator’, comprising c. 100 species from across the Old World, most of them insular. We achieved an extensive geographic DNA sampling of Zosterops by using historical specimens and recently collected samples. Using over 700 genome-wide loci in conjunction with coalescent species tree methods and gene flow detection approaches, we untangled the reticulated evolutionary history of Zosterops, which comprises three main clades centered in Indo-Africa, Asia, and Australasia, respectively. Genetic introgression between species permeates the Zosterops phylogeny, regardless of how distantly related species are. Crucially, we identified the Indonesian archipelago, and specifically Borneo, as the major center of diversity and the only area where all three main clades overlap, attesting to the evolutionary importance of this region.

Indonesia’s many islands, large and small, make it an important center of avian diversity and endemism. Current biogeographic understanding, however, is limited by the lack of modern genetic samples for comparative analyses from most of these islands, and conservation efforts are hampered by the paucity of recent information from small islands peripheral to major, more commonly visited islands. In November and December 2016, we visited Maratua, an oceanic coral atoll 50 km east of Borneo, and Bawean, a volcanic island on the Sunda continental shelf 150 km north of Java, to survey birds and collect specimens for morphological and genetic analysis. We detected many of the birds on Maratua’s historical lists and added several new resident and migratory species. Notably, we did not detect the Maratua White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus barbouri). On Bawean, we found the forests to be nearly silent and detected remarkably few resident land-bird species overall. The severe population reduction of C. m. barbouri on Maratua and the drastic reduction of forest birds on Bawean probably result from overexploitation by the cage-bird trade in the first case and a combination of the cage-bird trade and pellet-gun hunting in the second.

White-eyes (Zosterops spp.) are a group of small passerines distributed across the Eastern Hemisphere that have become a textbook example of rapid speciation. However, traditional taxonomy has relied heavily on conservative plumage features to delimit white-eye species boundaries, resulting in several recent demonstrations of misclassification. Resolution of confused taxonomy is important in order to correctly delimit species and identify taxa which may require conservation, particularly in Asia where the songbird trade is decimating wild populations. In this study, we aim to untangle multiple instances of confused taxonomic treatment in three large, widespread Asian wastebasket species complexes of white-eye (Oriental White-eye Zosterops palpebrosus, Japanese White-eye Zosterops japonicus and Mountain White-eye Zosterops montanus) renowned for their conservative morphology. Using mitochondrial DNA from 173 individuals spanning 42 taxa, we uncovered extensive polyphyly in Z. palpebrosus and Z. japonicus and propose some radically revised species limits under which former members of Z. palpebrosus and Z. japonicus would be reassigned into four and two different species, respectively. The revised taxonomy results in a net loss of two previously recognized species and a net gain of two newly recognized species, leading to significant taxonomic change but a lack of additional species-level diversity. One of the newly elevated species, Zosterops melanurus from Java and Bali, is also the world’s most heavily traded songbird and requires urgent conservation attention.

Helmeted Hornbill(Rhinolax vigil)is the only hornbill that equipped with solid casque made from keratin for both males and females. The demand for casque in the black market was huge and resulted in IUCN status leaped up from vulnerable to critically endangered. We received a total of 68 confiscated helmeted hornbill casques. As part of the casework and the objectives of the study, we determined to reveal the sex status of those casques and the best methods to work with keratinous material. Molecular methods to determining sex in birds rely on the CHD gene located on male and female chromosomes ZZ and ZW, respectively. We optimized laboratory protocols for genetic sexing using three independent sets of primers P2/P8, 2550F/2718R, and CHD1F/CHD1R to amplify regions of the sexlinked CHD-Z and CHD-W genes. The CHD1F/CHD1R determined sex 80.88% of samples. The 2550F/2718R were quite successful, sexing 51.47% of samples. In contrast, the P2/P8 only identified the sex around 20.58% of samples. These results showed that CHD1F/CHD1R works the most effective for sexing the casques with 52.9% females, 27.9% males, and 19.1% unidentified. Therefore, the most accurate and suitable primers are CHD1F/CHD1R, 2550F/2718R, and P2/P8, respectively for keratinous samples.

Birds keeping, especially songbirds, has been considered as one of the major drivers that lead to species extinction in Indonesia. The demand for songbirds either for songbird’s competition or to be enjoyed at home is considerably high, especially in Java. As the native Javan population has been depleted due to habitat conversion and excessive trapping, the supply of songbirds is provided by other islands in Indonesia such as Sumatera and Kalimantan. We conducted long term monitoring of songbird’s trade on Jambi. Data on bird’s trade was obtained by examining the transaction records from wholesalers from the period of 2016 – 2020. The results showed that there were shifting in species target especially after 2018 due to implementation of new regulation on protected species. However, the total number remains high. The trade comparison for the same period between trade records in 2016 and 2020 demonstrated the reduction in the number of species from around 32 species to 25 species, however, the total volume of traded birds is higher in 2020 which is 20.600 compare to 7.198 during the first sixth months. Considering the pandemic situation, the songbirds trade activities is seemingly not affected especially for the distribution chain from hunter to wholesalers.

Peat swamp forest is an important refuge for biodiversity in Southeast Asia and is now becoming a target of exploitation. The scarcity of information on avifauna and ecology of birds in peat swamp forests prevents understanding of the effects of land use change on avifauna. In this study, we describe the bird assemblages in habitats with different land uses by comparing species richness, community composition, and feeding guild patterns in Bukit Batu, Indonesia. Bird assemblages in natural peat swamp forests (NPF), high-maintenance industrial acacia plantations (planted acacia forest, PAF), low-maintenance rubber plantations (jungle rubber forest, JRF), and village areas (VIL) were studied using a fixed-radius point-count method. Of the 95 species observed, 45, 20, 35, and 48 species were observed in NPF, PAF, JRF, and VIL, respectively. Estimated species richness was the highest in NPF, followed by VIL, JRF, and PAF. NPF had the highest species diversity and β-diversity, more endangered species, and a distinctive species composition characterized by fly-catching insectivores. The relative conservation value of PAF was notably low, particularly compared with JRF. The avifauna in VIL was characterized by more generalists that favor open spaces and therefore is not considered an important habitat for forest-dependent birds that are of conservation concern. Our results indicate that NPF has irreplaceable value for bird diversity conservation, but low-maintenance rubber plantations were home to several forest-dependent species and partially supported bird diversity, particularly compared with high-maintenance acacia plantations.

Birds market survey has been proofed to be effective as a complementary method to evaluate the population of birds in the wild. We implemented this method to monitor the birds trade in Jambi. Rather than direct observation to the market, we examine the transaction records from three wholesalers to obtain data. Our results show that during the period of January-September 2017 the total birds traded is 11,660 specimens and transaction value is Rp 941,932,900.00. Number of generic species is 76 in which some names refer to same species. From those generic species, we can identify about 26 species and the rest of birds is grouped according to their genus or family by which consist of 11 kind of birds. There are 4 species (and group of species) that traded over 1000 specimens i.e Acridotheres javanicus (2,824), Chloropsis sp. (2,185), Garrulax mitratus (1,266), and Zosterops sp. (1,355). The expensive songbirds such as Pycnonotus zeylanicus and Kittacincla malabarica are absent but the least expensive species but favorable, Copsychus saularis, is only traded in small number (157 specimens). Combine field survey and market survey may give better picture of overall bird population that critical for setting up conversation strategy of Indonesian birds.

Aim We use parametric biogeographical reconstruction based on an extensive DNA sequence dataset to characterize the spatio‐temporal pattern of colonization of the Old World monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae). We then use this framework to examine the role of dispersal and colonization in their evolutionary diversification and to compare plumages between island and continental Terpsiphone species. Location Africa, Asia and the Indian Ocean. Methods We generate a DNA sequence dataset of 2300 bp comprising one nuclear and three mitochondrial markers for 89% (17/19) of the Old World Monarchidae species and 70% of the Terpsiphone subspecies. By applying maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic methods and implementing a Bayesian molecular clock to provide a temporal framework, we reveal the evolutionary history of the group. Furthermore, we employ both Lagrange and Bayes‐Lagrange analyses to assess ancestral areas at each node of the phylogeny. By combining the ancestral area reconstruction with information on plumage traits we are able to compare patterns of plumage evolution on islands and continents. Results We provide the first comprehensive molecular phylogenetic reconstruction for the Old World Monarchidae. Our phylogenetic results reveal a relatively recent diversification associated with several dispersal events within this group. Moreover, ancestral area analyses reveal an Asian origin of the Indian Ocean and African clades. Ancestral state reconstruction analyses of plumage characters provide an interpretation of the plumage differentiation on islands and continents. Ancestral plumage traits are inferred to be close to those of the Asian paradise‐flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi), and island species display a high degree of plumage autapomorphy compared with continental species. Main conclusions Terpsiphone paradisi is polyphyletic and comprises populations that have retained the ancestral plumage of the widespread Terpsiphone genus. The genus appears to have colonized south‐west Asia, the Indian Ocean and Africa from eastern Asia. The phylogeny and divergence time estimates indicate multiple simultaneous colonizations of the western Old World by Terpsiphone. These results reinforce a hypothesis of range expansions of a Terpsiphone paradisi‐like ancestor into eastern Asia and the western Old World.

Penelitian dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh metode pra-kultur yang efektif dalam meningkatkan efisiensi regenerasi in vitro terhadap eksplan buku kotiledon pada empat varietas kedelai. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Laboratorium Ilmu Tanaman Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Lampung, dimulai dari Maret sampai dengan Mei 2013. Rancangan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah rancangan acak kelompok. Perlakuan yang diterapkan merupakan kombinasi dari dua faktor yaitu varietas (Detam 1, Detam 2, Burangrang, Panderman) dan metode pra-kultur (kecambah 6 hari dan imbibisi 20 jam) yang merupakan perlakuan terhadap empat varietas benih kedelai tersebut sebelum ditanam pada media inisiasi tunas. Perlakuan disusun secara faktorial (4x2) dengan 5 ulangan. Setiap satuan percobaan terdiri dari empat eksplan buku kotiledon kedelai. Hasilpenelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata jumlah tunas adventif per eksplan (RJTAPE) tidak dipengaruhi oleh metode prakultur, varietas dan interaksi antara keduanya. Sedangkan, persentase eksplan yang membentuk tunas adventif (PEMTA) tidak dipengaruhi oleh metode pra-kultur namun dipengaruhi oleh varietas dan interaksi antara kedua faktor tersebut. PEMTA tertinggi didapatkan jika menggunakan varietas Detam 1 melalui perlakuan perkecambahan (70%) dan varietas Pandermanmelalui perlakuan imbibisi (50%). Media pengakaran ½ MS dan ½ MS + NAA 0,5 mg l-1 memiliki efektifitas yang sama terhadap persentase tunas adventif yang membentuk akar fungsional (PTMAF) pada minggu kedua setelah pengakaran. Dengan demikian, teknik regenerasi secara in vitro melalui organogenesis pada varietas Detam 1 dengan perlakuan perkecambahan dan varietas Panderman dengan perlakuan imbibisi lebih efisien digunakan untuk transformasi genetik kedelai.

We describe a new species of pygocephalomorph eumalacostracan from the Leitchfield Formation, Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous) of Kentucky, U.S.A. The fossils display a well-developed cephalothorax, pleon, and tail fan, and they show greatest affinity with other species within Tealliocarididae, especially to species of Pseudotealliocaris. The new species, Pseudotealliocaris holthuisi, is a second taxon of tealliocarid from the American Lower Carboniferous, the other being P. palinscari from the Mississippian of Pennsylvania. We compare the new species to other known species in the family and provide an overview of pygocephalomorph evolution.
