Abstract The presence of low-quality coarse aggregates and exposure to aggressive conditions are the two major problems with the durability of concrete. Therefore, an alternative concrete with enhanced properties to prevent fluid and ionic mobility compared to conventional concrete is needed. This study investigated the effects of main mix parameters on the transport characteristics and corrosion behavior of ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). A set of 27 UHPFRC mixtures with different combinations of w/b ratio, cement, and silica fume contents, based on a 33-factorial experiment design, were prepared and tested for water permeability, chloride penetrability, electrical resistivity, chloride profile, and corrosion current density. The results showed that UHPFRC mixtures exhibited excellent durability properties characterized by negligible water penetration ( 20 kΩ cm) and pH values were 12.41–13.01, indicating the implausible likelihood of corrosion in the UHPFRC mixtures. This was confirmed through the corrosion current density measurements of reinforced UHPFRC specimens after 450 days of chloride exposure, which were below the critical limit for the corrosion initiation of reinforcing steel. Finally, the experimental data were statistically analyzed and fitted for all the listed tests, and models were developed for them using the regression analysis such that regression coefficients were within 0.90–0.99.

Reinforced concrete structures face significant annual expenditures in combating rebar corrosion, with chloride penetration identified as a major contributor. This study employs laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to quantitatively predict the chloride-induced corrosion rate in such structures. Eighty samples, characterized by known chloride content (ranging from 0 % to 1.0 %), underwent controlled corrosion processes with predetermined degrees measured as bar weight loss. The investigation included two cement types, Type I and Type V, along with samples incorporating pozzolanic materials (FA, SF, and GGBFS,) in addition to plain OPC samples. LIBS was subsequently employed to detect chlorine presence in each concrete sample, recording the corresponding intensity of the chlorine line. After the initial data acquisition, peak analysis was performed to identify the dominant spectral peaks, ensuring that the most relevant signals were isolated. Following this, the intensity of the chloride emission line from the LIBS spectrum was recorded and correlated with its corresponding chloride signal, establishing a quantitative relationship between the LIBS output and chloride presence. A model was then developed to link the LIBS signal intensity to its corresponding chloride concentration in the sample. In parallel, the corrosion rate associated with each specific chloride concentration was measured and then linked to the LIBS-derived chloride concentrations, creating a framework that ties the LIBS output to the actual rebar degradation within the concrete. Comparisons with previous studies demonstrated superior conformity of the developed models. The study also presents optimized parameters for the LIBS setup. Notably, results indicated a high correlation between LIBS intensity and chloride concentration, with the developed model accurately predicting the degree of corrosion.

The waste generated during ceramic polishing is typically disposed of in landfills rather than being recycled within the production facility, potentially causing environmental harm. This study aims to enhance industrial waste utilization and reduce CO2 emissions in the cement industry by investigating the feasibility of incorporating ceramic sludge from polishing processes into an innovative binary blended cement. Different binders were prepared with varying amounts of ceramic polishing sludge (CPS), ranging from 10% to 50%, and tested against the ASTM C595 standards. The results were compared with those of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). This approach involves evaluating the pozzolanic activity and conducting an advanced characterization assessment of CPS and binary blended ceramic polishing sludge cement (CPSC) paste. This study employed a combination of physical, mechanical, and chemical tests, including setting time, particle size distribution (PSD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area, compressive strength, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), heat of hydration, and differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric analysis (DSC/TGA). The results indicated that CPS can be used as a pozzolanic material to create innovative binders with properties comparable to those of OPC. The Strength Activity Index (SAI) values affirmed the pozzolanic properties of CPS, exceeding 75% for up to 40% CPS replacement. Incorporating CPS in the blended cement resulted in a slower rate of cement hydration, leading to prolonged setting times and reduced early strength development. Although the compressive strength decreased with increasing CPS content, it remained within the acceptable ASTM C595 limits with up to 50% replacement. Nevertheless, the optimal replacement level of OPC with CPS was determined to be 50%. Furthermore, CPS substitution reduced the dry density and improved the water absorption and apparent porosity, reflecting microstructural changes. The SEM images revealed that the blended CPSC had a lower apparent porosity than the pure OPC. The DSC/TGA analysis demonstrated that the blended cement had a lower calcium hydroxide content and higher silica than pure OPC.

Abstract Clay minerals in soils and rocks exhibit large volume change upon interaction with water and this behavior becomes even more complex when the strata are being stressed by the engineering and environmental loads. Therefore, a realistic prediction of the hydro-mechanical behavior of the clay-bearing strata is always a challenge due to their coupled swelling-mechanical response in the cases of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering problems, nuclear waste storage in clay-bearing rock repositories, shale gas extraction, and other uses of clay in the manufacturing industry. All the existing behavior models have restricted applications in the engineering and other fields of practice mainly due to the partial consideration of the structure and fabric of clay-bearing strata in the model formulation. In this study, a hydro-mechanical behavior model has been formulated using the parameters acquired from the molecular-level simulations and modeling of the volume change and stress–strain behavior of the clay-bearing structure. The Molecular Mechanics and Molecular Dynamic simulations were performed on the natural structure of the clay-bearing strata formulated using Monte Carlo technique. The mathematical model, developed from the simulation results, can predict the overall hydro-mechanical behavior of clay-bearing strata for all possible combinations of clay minerals, non-clay minerals, salts causing cementation of the soil/rock structure, confining pressures, and the induced strain levels. The developed model has successfully been validated through laboratory and field testing on the clay-bearing strata in both the elastic and elasto-plastic regions of the stress–strain behavior and also from the data of two (02) swelling clays (MX-80 and FEBEX Bentonite) from the existing literature, supporting the universal nature of the developed behavior model.

Expansive soil dual behavior (swell/shrink) exhibits high compressibility and volumetric instability against the frequent moisture imbalance, rendering premature failure of lightweight structures. The present research highlighted the geotechnical behavior of expansive soil treated with industrial waste pozzolanic fly ash (FA) materials. Fly ash, a leftover from coal burning in power plants is considered a problematic solid waste globally. The typical disposal technique for fly ash can lead to the degradation of flora and fauna and contamination of fertile land. However, numerous research studies reveal that fly ash can be used to effectively strengthen the geoengineering properties, including physical, chemical, and biological. This paper critically reviews past research on the efficiency of fly ash as a soil stabilizer in enhancing the mechanical behavior of expansive soils. The effect of varying dosages and types of fly ash in soil mixture on the Atterberg limits, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California Bearing Ratio (CBR), and swell potential is critically reviewed through a series of geotechnical and microstructural characterization tests. The addition of varying percentages of fly ash (25–40%) to expansive soil shows an improvement in plastic behavior (up to 30–33%), compressive shear strength (40–48%), penetration resistance (52–55%) with least swelling (42–48%), and compressibility (36–40%) of fly ash-soil. Furthermore, the volumetric stability (swell/shrink) of clayey soil is attributed to mineral alteration and chemical compositions due to active pozzolanic reactions. This study may prove to be very effective in devising an alternative stabilizer to address the dual nature problems associated with expansive soil.

Using calcined clays and limestone powder for clinker substitution to make a tertiary blend, known as limestone calcined clay cement (LC3), is a promising emerging technology. This study explored the viability of using local Saudi clays to prepare LC3 concrete. Two Saudi (white and yellow) and one Ukrainian (for comparison) clays were used for clinker substitution at three levels (i.e., 30%, 50% and 70%). The clay and LC3 samples were characterized using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analyses. Paste and concrete specimens were prepared to investigate the phase assemblage, fresh (water demand, setting time, and flowability), and hardened (compressive strength, shrinkage, and chloride ingress) properties. The results revealed that the clays contained about 53%, 30%, and 35% kaolinite, respectively. The incorporation of clays resulted in increased water demand to achieve normal consistency. The setting time of LC3 mixtures also increased, while the flowability decreased compared to the control mixture. The 28-day compressive strength was more than 28 MPa up to 50% clinker substitution. LC3 mixtures also exhibited relatively low shrinkage and high resistance to chloride ingress.

Abstract In order to increase the efficiency of the structures to resist seismic excitation, combinations of inerter, negative stiffness, and tuned mass damper are used. In the present work, the optimum tuning frequency ratio and damping of the tuned mass negative stiffness damper-inerter (TMNSDI) for the base-isolated structure were determined by employing the numerical searching technique under filtered white-noise earthquake excitation and stationary white noise. The energy dissipation index, the absolute acceleration, and the relative displacement of the isolated structure were considered as the optimum parameters, obtained by their maximization. Evaluations of base-isolated structures with and without TMNSDI under non-stationary seismic excitations were investigated. The efficiency of the optimally designed TMNSDI for isolated flexible structures in controlling seismic responses (pulse-type, and real earthquakes) were evaluated in terms of acceleration and displacement. A dynamic system was used for deriving the tuning frequency and tuned mass negative stiffness damper inerter (TMNSDI) for white noise excitation by using explicit formulae of the curve fitting method. The proposed empirical expressions, for design of base-isolated structures with supplementary TMNSDI, showed lesser error. Fragility curve results and story drift ratio indicate reduction in seismic response by 40% and 70% in base-isolated structure using TMNSDI.

In this paper, we consider a coupled system of Laplacian and bi-Laplacian equations with nonlinear dampings and source terms of variable-exponents nonlinearities. This system is supplemented with initial and mixed boundary conditions. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness results of a weak solution, under suitable assumptions on the variable exponents. Second, we show that the solutions with positive-initial energy blow-up in a finite time. Finally, we establish the global existence as well as the energy decay results of the solutions, using the stable-set and the multiplier methods, under appropriate conditions on the variable exponents and the initial data.

Strengthening existing unreinforced masonry (URM) structures with plaster is a common technique used to improve the structural integrity and durability of buildings. However, using a thin layer of plaster alone may not provide sufficient reinforcement to adequately enhance the URM wall’s resistance to lateral or other types of loading. Therefore, incorporating additional materials, such as steel fibers and nano-silica, into the plaster mix has been explored in this study to further improve the URM wall’s resilience performance. The effect of nano-silica modified steel fibers reinforced (NS-SFR) mortar plastering on the axial and lateral load capacity of concrete masonry walls was experimentally investigated. The investigated URM walls were constructed with a dimension of 830 × 810 × 100 mm (length × width × thickness) using hollow concrete masonry blocks. These walls were categorized as a reference wall, plastered on one side only wall, and plastered on both sides wall. During the experimental testing, each sample was exposed to a combination of precompression and cyclic in-plane loading to assess its shear capacity. The tests also involved closely observing and identifying any cracks or types of failures that occurred. The results of the tests indicated that the walls that were strengthened with NS-SFR mortar exhibited a significant improvement in their compressive strength, shear strength capacity, and stiffness, in comparison to the walls that were not strengthened. Applying NS-SFR mortar as a plaster on the URM wall resulted in significant improvements in both compressive strength and shear capacity. Specifically, for the one-side plastered wall, the use of NS-SFR mortar increased compressive strength and shear capacity by 18.5 % and 40 %, respectively, while for the two sides plastered wall, the increase was even more significant, with improvements of 86.5 % and 132 % in compressive strength and shear capacity, respectively.

This research was developed to use recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and recycled crushed glass (RCG) to produce self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixtures. Natural coarse aggregate (NCA) was replaced by RCA from 0% to 100%, and natural fine aggregate (NFA) was replaced by RCG from 0% to 20%. Slump flow with T500 time, L-box, and V-funnel tests were done to ascertain the workability properties of SCC mixtures. The mechanical properties studied were compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength at 28 and 56 days. Ultrasonic pulse velocities (UPV) were also measured for the SCC mixtures at 28 and 56 days. Ten shear-critical beams with different shear span-to-depth (a/d) ratios were also cast and tested under 4-point bending. Cracking load, failure load, load-midspan deflection curves, and deflection corresponding to ultimate load were observed. The recommendations of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318–14 and ACI 318–19), Eurocode (EC2), and Japanese Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) for shear design were also evaluated on a database of 222 beams cast with SCC and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) along with the beams tested in the presented study. Results indicate that the workability and mechanical properties were reduced when the replacement level of RCA was increased. The use of RCG as a replacement for NFA enhanced the workability properties and mechanical properties at the age of 56 days. The replacement of NCA with RCA slightly reduced the shear capacity and stiffness of the RC beams. However, the shear capacity and stiffness of RC beams improved when NFA was replaced with RCG. The design provisions of ACI 318–19 yielded accurate estimates of shear capacity compared to JCSE, EC 2, and ACI 318–14.

Waste materials are harmful to the environment when incinerated, dumped in open water, or landfilled. Present-day society faces a serious challenge from the growing amount of waste materials and the need for a sustainable solution. Due to the limited amount of natural raw materials, there is a global need to minimize the amount of waste. Using suitable waste materials, such as waste plastic, as additives in asphalt mixtures is a viable strategy, offering an alternative to virgin materials like polymer-modified asphalt binders. This research studied the influence of waste fibers as a stabilizer and recycled Polyethylene waste as an asphalt modifier in the Stone Mastic Asphalt mix (SMA). Two categories of the SMA mixes were produced, base and modified mixes, with three different mixes under each category. The rheological properties of the Recycled Polyethylene Modified Asphalt (RPMA) have been assessed using different Recycled Polyethylene (RP) dosages at the upper-performance temperature. In addition, two Recycled Fibers (RF), cellulose and jute, were used as stabilizing materials for SMA mixes. The impact of RP and RF on the SMA mixes was investigated using three tests: Drain-down resistance, moisture sensitivity, and rutting performance. Statistical analysis was conducted to assess the effect of the additives on the measured SMA properties. The results showed that adding RP and RF improved the SMA mixes' ability to hold the asphalt and fine material inside the mix and solved the drain-down problem by 81.43%. In addition, adding RP as an asphalt modifier greatly enhanced the moisture and rutting resistance by 47.5% and 93%, respectively.

A new configuration of hollow concrete blocks was fabricated in the field. Three distinct types of hollow concrete blocks were produced to assess the effectiveness of such blocks in the market. In addition, the experimentally determined thermal resistance was used to calculate the expenses, oil consumption, and CO2 emissions. Blocks made with crumb rubber failed in the ASTM C129 tests for non-load bearing compressive strength, whereas those made with the control and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) met the standard requirements. It was shown that the inclusion of rubber particles lowered the strength by 56%. The control block with the new configuration used in this investigation has a thermal conductivity of 53.4% lower than the commercial hollow blocks. While the inclusion material had a smaller impact than the arrangement of holes, HDPE thermal conductivity decreased by 6.4% compared to the control block. Likewise, the control-block wall's layout can reduce the power consumption by 53%. Moreover, the HDPE and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blocks lowered the power consumption by 54 and 57%, respectively, saving roughly 4.26 ($/m2.year). Furthermore, the oil consumption and CO2 emissions were decreased by 56% when HDPE with 20% replacement was utilized. Reducing oil consumption as an energy source implies cleaner air and a lower carbon footprint. Therefore, it is recommended to incorporate these waste materials in the production of concrete blocks in order to reduce CO2 pollution in the world.

Each year, millions of tons of household and industrial waste, including plastic, are responsible for harming the environment through burning, landfilling, or going to dump in open water. Waste plastic disposal is a critical issue faced by municipalities in modern cities. In addition, the development of hundreds of kilometers of roads worldwide leads to the consumption of vast quantities of raw materials and the depletion of valuable natural resources. The high expense of virgin polymers and rising plastic waste have shifted the research focus toward green pavements that utilize waste plastics. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the use of recycled plastic waste as a binder modifier for Stone Mastic Asphalt mix (SMA). The high-temperature performance of the Recycled Polyethylene Modified Binder (RPMB) has been evaluated with various percentage dosages to satisfy the environment of the Gulf region. In addition, the impact of RPMB on the SMA mix was studied through three performance tests, drain down resistance, moisture damage resistance, and rutting performance. The results showed continuous improvement in rheological properties with increased recycled polyethylene (RP) content by up to 6%. The RP enhances the binder properties such as the rutting parameter, non-recoverable compliance, and viscosity to meet the high-temperature performance requirement for heavy traffic (UPG 76 H) of most roads in the gulf environment. However, the results showed that RPMB could not meet the recovery requirement set by AASHTO TP 70. That is due to RP's plastomer nature. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement some proportion of the RP with an elastomeric polymer. Further, the results of SMA mix properties with RPMB showed remarkable improvement over than control mixture in terms of resistance to drain down, moisture damage, and rutting by 55.1%, 52.6%, and 96.4, respectively.

Hydrated cement is one of the complex composite systems due to the presence of multi-scale phases with varying morphologies. Calcium silicate hydrate, which is the principal binder phase in the hydrated cement, is responsible for the stiffness, strength, and durability of Portland cement concrete. To understand the mechanical and durability behavior of concrete, it is important to investigate the interactions of hydrated cement phases with other materials at the nanoscale. In this regard, the molecular simulation of cement-based materials is an effective approach to study the properties and interactions of the cement system at the fundamental scale. Recently, many studies have been published regarding atomistic simulations to investigate the cement phases to define/explain the microscopic physical and chemical properties, thereby improving the macroscopic performance of hardened binders. The research in molecular simulation of cementitious systems involves researchers with multidisciplinary backgrounds, mainly in two areas: ① cement chemistry, where the hydration reactions govern most of the chemical and physical properties at the atomic scale; and ② computational materials science and engineering, where the bottom-up approach is required. The latter approach is still in its infancy, and as such, a study of the prevailing knowledge is useful, namely through an exhaustive literature review. This state-of-the-art report provides a comprehensive survey on studies that were conducted in this area and cites the important findings.

Modular construction is becoming famous for buildings because it allows a high degree of prefabrication, with individual modules easily transported and installed. Building envelope optimization is vital as it protects buildings from undesirable external environments by expressly preventing the incursion of outside elements. This research uses a systematic literature review to appraise the characteristics of modular envelope panels, focusing on hygrothermal and energy performance. A total of 265 articles were subjected to rigorous filtering and screening measures. The findings reveal notable inconsistencies in modular envelope terminologies and a lack of consistent performance measures, which present significant challenges for research and development efforts. Furthermore, the results indicate a predominant focus on hygrothermal and energy performance in existing studies, with limited attention to environmental impacts and other performance factors. Moreover, the existing literature primarily addresses modular envelope solutions in temperate climates, offering inadequate information for hot and hot–humid climate contexts. To address these gaps, this study proposes categorizing modular envelope panels into four distinct categories: active, passive, smart, and green/vegetated wall panels. These findings will benefit researchers, architects, building envelope designers, policymakers, and organizations developing building performance-related assessment ratings, standards, and codes. The study suggests adopting the categorization of modular envelope panels provided in this study and developing modular panels suitable for hot and humid climates to fill the existing knowledge gap.

Waste materials may be used as raw materials for interlocking masonry products in order to contribute to sustainable development and environmental protection. Rubberized concrete Interlocking Brick (RCIB) was developed by volumetric replacement of 56% of the ordinary Portland cement with fly ash and 20% of the sand with crumb rubber (CR) to reduce the production cost of conventional concrete bricks (CCB) and restrict the depletion of natural resources and contributing to solving the environmental problems associated with the accumulation of scrap tires in landfills. The mechanical and sustainability evaluation of masonry prism made of the developed brick is the aim of this research. Consequently, compressive strength, failure mechanism, stress–strain behaviour, and energy absorption of grouted and ungrouted prisms made of RCIB were measured experimentally under axial compression load. The thermal resistance, fuel consumption, CO2 emission, and cost analysis of RCIBs were estimated. The findings reveal that grout had a significant impact on the compressive strength of rubberized concrete interlocking masonry prisms where the compressive strength of grouted and ungrouted prisms was 10.99 MPa and 5.83 MPa, respectively. Web splitting and vertical cracks were the common failure modes observed in both prisms. Moreover, the rubberized concrete interlocking masonry prisms revealed greater energy absorption as well as a gradual and ductile failure mechanism. The RCIB exhibited higher thermal resistance than CCB (increased from 0.106 to 0.171 m2 K/W) which could contribute to a 62% reduction in annual fuel consumption and CO2 emission. Further, more than 25% of the material cost could be saved.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a remarkable semiconductor catalyst that has attracted widespread attention as a visible light photo-responsive, metal-free, low-cost photocatalytic material. Pristine g-C3N4 suffers fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, low surface area, and insufficient visible light absorption, resulting in low photocatalytic efficiency. This review presents the recent progress, perspectives, and persistent challenges in the development of g-C3N4-based photocatalytic materials. Several approaches employed to improve the visible light absorption of the materials including metal and non-metal doping, co-doping, and heterojunction engineering have been extensively discussed. These approaches, in general, were found to decrease the material’s bandgap, increase the surface area, reduce charge carrier recombination, and promote visible light absorption, thereby enhancing the overall photocatalytic performance. The material has been widely used for different applications such as photocatalytic hydrogen production, water splitting, CO2 conversion, and water purification. The work has also identified various limitations and weaknesses associated with the material that hinders its maximum utilization under visible illumination and presented state-of-the-art solutions that have been reported recently. The summary presented in this review would add an invaluable contribution to photocatalysis research and facilitate the development of efficient visible light-responsive semiconducting materials.

This paper presents a study on evaluating the effect of two key factors, namely, the hybridization of straight and hooked steel fibers and curing methods, on the mechanical properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The UHPC specimens using the same proportions of the water, binder, and filler were prepared considering five different combinations of straight and hooked steel fibers. The UHPC specimens were subjected to normal water curing and steam curing. The mechanical properties studied included the compressive strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, flexural toughness, and steel-UHPC bond characteristics considering steel bars of two different strength grades (G60 and G230). The experimental data were used to discuss the effects of both the hybridization of steel fibers and curing methods on the mechanical properties of UHPC as well as to conduct an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and to obtain the empirical models correlating the variables with the mechanical properties. The test results exhibited a significant effect of the hybridization of the fibers on the studied properties of UHPC. The UHPC containing a higher amount of hooked fibers significantly enhanced the modulus of elasticity, flexural tensile strength, and flexural toughness. The performance of UHPC cured using steam was found better than that cured using water in all aspects.

Global carbon dioxide emissions can be attributed to Portland cement production; thus, an alternative cementitious system is essential to reduce cement demand. Ceramic waste powder (CWP), which contains high proportions of silica and alumina, has emerged as a promising alternative because of its chemical composition. This review discusses the potential of CWP as an alternative cementitious system and its effects on the physical, mechanical, and durability properties of cementitious systems. The findings revealed that the utilization of CWP in cementitious systems has positive effects on their physical, mechanical, and durability properties owing to the chemical composition of CWP, which can act as a filler material or contribute to the pozzolanic reaction. A pozzolanic reaction occurs between the silica and alumina in the CWP and calcium hydroxide in the cement, resulting in the production of additional cementitious materials such as calcium silicate hydrates and calcium aluminate hydrates. These additional materials can improve the strength and durability of cementitious systems. Various studies have demonstrated that CWP can be effectively used as a partial replacement for cement in cementitious systems. This can reduce the carbon footprint of construction activities by reducing the demand for Portland cement. However, the optimal amount and particle size of CWP have not been fully determined, and further research is required to optimize its use in cementitious systems. In addition, the technical and economic challenges associated with the use of CWP in construction must be further investigated to ensure its effective implementation.

The incorporation of crumb rubber (CR) in concrete is associated with a negative effect on the mechanical properties of concrete due to the weak bond between CR and cement mortar. Consequently, there is a need to treat CR to improve its properties. This paper reports the effect of some CR treatment methods, such as NaOH, KMnO4, and cement coating in improving the mechanical properties of crumb rubber concrete (CRC). Up to 40% treated CR was used to replace fine aggregate in the preparation of CRC specimens. The effect of selected treatment methods on the surface texture and physical properties of CR was studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy and sedimentation measurements. The unit weight and compressive- and flexural-strength were measured to assess the mechanical properties of CRC. Further, statistical and cost analysis of the experimental data were carried out to identify the optimum treatment method. It was noted that the selected treatment methods cause crucial changes in the surface texture and shape of CR particles. The NaOH,- KMnO4,- and cement-treated CR exhibited a remarkable improvement in the sedimentation coefficient being 51.8%, 99.6% and 99.0%, respectively, compared to value of 37.2% for the untreated-CR. The NaOH- and KMnO4-treatment methods increased the compressive- and flexural-strength of CRC at low quantity of CR. But at higher quantities of CR, there was a degradation in the mechanical properties due to the agglomeration of CR particles. However, the agglomeration phenomenon was overcome by applying a cement coating that resulted in 64% and 33% increase in the compressive- and flexural-strength, respectively, in CRC with 40% replacement of CR with fine aggregate. The statistical analysis indicated that cement coating is the most effective treatment method as it significantly enhances the mechanical properties of CRC. In addition, there was a 22% decrease in the cost of CRC due to the cement-treatment of CR.

The corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete has been reported as one of the main durability problems of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to chloride, carbonation or both. To investigate the structural performances of RC structures subjected to corrosive exposure, the corrosion of rebars embedded in concrete is accelerated to induce a targeted degree of reinforcement corrosion in a short time duration. Several earlier researchers have attempted to develop a setup to induce the accelerated corrosion of steel bars in concrete structures. However, the induced corrosion has not been simulative of the naturally occurring corrosion of steel in concrete, causing a lack of accuracy in the test results. In this study, an attempt was made to develop a novel approach that could be utilized to induce required degrees of reinforcement corrosion following a natural pattern. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed setup and procedure of introducing uniform reinforcement corrosion, RC beam specimens were designed, cast, and corroded to three different corrosion levels. After inducing reinforcement corrosion, the beams were tested under flexural stress, and then the corroded bars were extracted to measure the mass loss due to corrosion. The visual inspection and gravimetric and flexural test results showed the capability of the proposed corrosion setup and procedure to induce the targeted uniform corrosion of steel bars, simulating a real-life scenario and facilitating the evaluation of the effect of reinforcement corrosion on the flexural performances of RC beams with very high accuracy.

The repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete members are very important due to several factors, including unexpected increases in load levels and/or the damaging impact of aggressive environmental conditions on structural concrete members. Many researchers have turned to using materials for the repair and strengthening of damaged structures or the construction of new concrete structural members. Ultrahigh-performance fibre-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC), characterized by superior structural and durability performance in aggressive environmental conditions, is one of the materials that have been considered for the repair and strengthening of concrete structural members. The repair or strengthening of concrete structures using UHPFRC needs a thorough knowledge of the behaviour of both the strengthening material and the strengthened concrete structure at service load conditions, in addition to an understanding of the design guidelines governing the use of such materials for effective repair and strengthening. In this study, the recent issues and findings regarding the use of UHPFRC as a repair or strengthening material for concrete structural members are reviewed, analysed, and discussed. In addition, recommendations were made concerning areas where future attention and research on the use of UHPFRC as a strengthening material needs to be focused if the material is to be applied in practice.
