13. Effect of bainitic transformation on bake hardening in TRIP assisted steel

Abstract

Bake hardening is a phenomenon where freshly generated dislocations get pinned down by the migrating carbon atoms under the influence of temperature employed in paint baking shop. Experimentally, a minimal 2% deformation is given to generate such new dislocations. On the other hand, after bainitic transformation, steel contains a large number of dislocations as well as excess carbon atoms in bainite, a combination of which is capable of producing bake hardening effect. In the current analysis, one grade of transformation induced plasticity aided steel was chosen to study the effect of isothermal bainitic transformation on subsequent bake hardening response, without giving any deformation assuming that the previous treatment would have generated sufficient dislocations which could be pinned down by the migrating carbon atoms under the influence of thermal treatment of the bake hardening process. The final microstructure was characterised by many techniques, using Thermo-Calc, optical microscopy, XRD analysis and 3-DAP. A good agreement was observed amongst all the techniques employed.

Abstract

Biaxial stretching behavior of a promising high-strength copper-alloyed interstitial-free (IF) steel has been investigated under various processing conditions using bulge tests. Hill theory and von Mises yield criterion have been used to analyze the results. It is revealed that copper-alloyed IF steel in continuous-annealed (CA) condition exhibits the highest equivalent strain at fracture and largest limiting dome height (LDH) among all the processing conditions. However, these values are lower in copper-alloyed interstitial steel than in traditional interstitial-free–high-strength (IF-HS) steels due to the presence of solute copper and copper precipitates in the former. Abstract

Crash resistance and formability relevant mechanical properties of a copper-alloyed interstitial-free (IF) steel processed under various conditions of batch annealing (BA), continuous annealing (CA), and postcontinuous annealing aging have been studied in a wide range of strain rate (3.33 × 10−4 to 200 s−1) and temperature (−100 °C to +20 °C). These properties have been compared with similarly processed traditional mild and high-strength IF steels. Assessment of various parameters such as strength, elongation, strain rate sensitivity of stress, strain-hardening capacity, temperature sensitivity of stress, activation volume, and specific energy absorption of all these steels implies that copper-alloyed IF steel is soft and formable in CA condition. It can be made stronger and more crash resistant than the conventional mild- or high-strength IF steels when aged to peak strength after CA. Room-temperature strain rate sensitivity of stress of the investigated steels exhibits a two-stage behavior. Copper in solution in ferrite causes solid solution softening at low temperatures (≤20 °C) and at high strain rates (200 s−1). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

40. Crystallization study of amorphous Fe40Ni40B20 by electrical resistivity measurement

Abstract

The crystallization in amorphous Fe40Ni40B20 alloy has been studied by electrical resistivity measurement. It shows a three stage compared to the more conventional two-stage crystallization behaviour in many metallic glasses. The Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation was found to be operative only for 40% transformed crystallized volume for the highest measured isotherm (740 K). The Avrami exponent and activation energy were found to be 1.75 and 53 kcal mol-1, respectively. The low activation energy in the amorphous alloy has been explained by the structural relaxation model.
