We investigate the orientation dependence of Enhanced Ionization (EI) during strong-field-driven nuclear motion in acetylene (C$_2$H$_2$). Here, we both initiate and probe molecular dynamics in acetylene with intense 6-fs cross-polarized pulse pairs, separated by a variable delay. Following multiple ionization by the first pulse, acetylene undergoes simultaneous elongation of the carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds, enabling further ionization by the second pulse and the formation of a very highly charged state, [C$_2$H$_2]^{6+}$. At small inter-pulse delays ($<$20 fs), this enhancement occurs when the molecule is aligned to the probe pulse. Conversely, at large delays ($>$40 fs), formation of [C$_2$H$_2]^{6+}$ occurs when the molecule is aligned to the pump pulse. By analyzing the polarization and time dependence of sequentially ionized [C$_2$H$_2]^{6+}$, we resolve two distinct pathways that both contribute to a large increase in the multiple ionization yield. This cross-polarized pulse pair scheme uniquely enables selective probing of deeply bound orbitals, providing new insights on orientation-dependent EI in highly charged hydrocarbons.

Inpainting-based codecs store sparse selected pixel data and decode by reconstructing the discarded image parts by inpainting. Successful codecs (coders and decoders) traditionally use inpainting operators that solve partial differential equations. This requires some numerical expertise if efficient implementations are necessary. Our goal is to investigate variants of Shepard inpainting as simple alternatives for inpainting-based compression. They can be implemented efficiently when we localise their weighting function. To turn them into viable codecs, we have to introduce novel extensions of classical Shepard interpolation that adapt successful ideas from previous codecs: Anisotropy allows direction-dependent inpainting, which improves reconstruction quality. Additionally, we incorporate data selection by subdivision as an efficient way to tailor the stored information to the image structure. On the encoding side, we introduce the novel concept of joint inpainting and prediction for isotropic Shepard codecs, where storage cost can be reduced based on intermediate inpainting results. In an ablation study, we show the usefulness of these individual contributions and demonstrate that they offer synergies which elevate the performance of Shepard inpainting to surprising levels. Our resulting approaches offer a more favourable trade-off between simplicity and quality than traditional inpainting-based codecs. We present the largest optical photometry compilation of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with redshifts ($z$). We include 64813 observations of 535 events (including upper limits) from 28 February 1997 up to 18 August 2023. We also present a user-friendly web tool \textit{grbLC} which allows users the visualization of photometry, coordinates, redshift, host galaxy extinction, and spectral indices for each event in our database. Furthermore, we have added a Gamma Ray Coordinate Network (GCN) scraper that can be used to collect data by gathering magnitudes from the GCNs. The web tool also includes a package for uniformly investigating colour evolution. We compute the optical spectral indices for 138 GRBs for which we have at least 4 filters at the same epoch in our sample and craft a procedure to distinguish between GRBs with and without colour evolution. By providing a uniform format and repository for the optical catalogue, this web-based archive is the first step towards unifying several community efforts to gather the photometric information for all GRBs with known redshifts. This catalogue will enable population studies by providing light curves (LCs) with better coverage since we have gathered data from different ground-based locations. Consequently, these LCs can be used to train future LC reconstructions for an extended inference of the redshift. The data gathering also allows us to fill some of the orbital gaps from Swift in crucial points of the LCs, e.g., at the end of the plateau emission or where a jet break is identified., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables. The Streaming Engine (SE) is a Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array which provides programming flexibility and high-performance with energy efficiency. An application program to be executed on the SE is represented as a combination of Synchronous Data Flow (SDF) graphs, where every instruction is represented as a node. Each node needs to be mapped to the right slot and array in the SE to ensure the correct execution of the program. This creates an optimization problem with a vast and sparse search space for which finding a mapping manually is impractical because it requires expertise and knowledge of the SE micro-architecture. In this work we propose a Reinforcement Learning framework with Global Graph Attention (GGA) module and output masking of invalid placements to find and optimize instruction schedules. We use Proximal Policy Optimization in order to train a model which places operations into the SE tiles based on a reward function that models the SE device and its constraints. The GGA module consists of a graph neural network and an attention module. The graph neural network creates embeddings of the SDFs and the attention block is used to model sequential operation placement. We show results on how certain workloads are mapped to the SE and the factors affecting mapping quality. We find that the addition of GGA, on average, finds 10% better instruction schedules in terms of total clock cycles taken and masking improves reward obtained by 20%., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

The Casimir effect in graphene systems is reviewed with emphasis made on the large thermal correction to the Casimir force predicted at short separations between the test bodies. The computational results for the Casimir pressure and for the thermal correction are presented for both pristine graphene and real graphene sheets, which possess nonzero energy gap and chemical potential, obtained by means of exact polarization tensor. Two experiments on measuring the gradient of the Casimir force between an Au-coated sphere and graphene- coated substrates performed by using a modified atomic force microscope cantilever-based technique are described. It is shown that the measurement data of both experiments are in agreement with theoretical predictions of the Lifshitz theory using the polarization tensor. Additionally, several important improvements made in the second experiment, allowed to demonstrate the predicted large thermal effect in the Casimir interaction at short separations. Inpainting-based compression represents images in terms of a sparse subset of its pixel data. Storing the carefully optimised positions of known data creates a lossless compression problem on sparse and often scattered binary images. This central issue is crucial for the performance of such codecs. Since it has only received little attention in the literature, we conduct the first systematic investigation of this problem so far. To this end, we first review and compare a wide range of existing methods from image compression and general purpose coding in terms of their coding efficiency and runtime. Afterwards, an ablation study enables us to identify and isolate the most useful components of existing methods. With context mixing, we combine those ingredients into new codecs that offer either better compression ratios or a more favourable trade-off between speed and performance., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures

Inpainting-based codecs store sparse, quantised pixel data directly and decode by interpolating the discarded image parts. This interpolation can be used simultaneously for efficient coding by predicting pixel data to be stored. Such joint inpainting and prediction approaches yield good results with simple components such as regular grids and Shepard interpolation on grey value images, but they lack a dedicated mode for colour images. Therefore, we evaluate different approaches for inpainting-based colour compression. Inpainting operators are able to reconstruct a large range of colours from a small colour palette of the known pixels. We exploit this with a luma preference mode which uses higher sparsity in YCbCr colour channels than in the brightness channel. Furthermore, we propose the first full vector quantisation mode for an inpainting-based codec that stores only a small codebook of colours. Compression methods based on inpainting are an evolving alternative to classical transform-based codecs for still images. Attempts to apply these ideas to video compression are rare, since reaching real-time performance is very challenging. Therefore, current approaches focus on simplified frame-by-frame reconstructions that ignore temporal redundancies. As a remedy, we propose a highly efficient, real-time capable prediction and correction approach that fully relies on partial differential equations (PDEs) in all steps of the codec: Dense variational optic flow fields yield accurate motion-compensated predictions, while homogeneous diffusion inpainting is applied for intra prediction. To compress residuals, we introduce a new highly efficient block-based variant of pseudodifferential inpainting. Our novel architecture outperforms other inpainting-based video codecs in terms of both quality and speed. For the first time in inpainting-based video compression, we can decompress FullHD (1080p) videos in real-time with a fully CPU-based implementation, outperforming previous approaches by roughly one order of magnitude.

We present the results of an experiment on measuring the gradient of the Casimir force between an Au-coated hollow glass microsphere and graphene-coated fused silica plate by means of a modified atomic force microscope cantilever based technique operated in the dynamic regime. These measurements were performed in high vacuum at room temperature. The energy gap and the concentration of impurities in the graphene sample used have been measured utilizing scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The measurement results for the gradients of the Casimir force are found to be in a very good agreement with theory using the polarization tensor of graphene at nonzero temperature depending on the energy gap and chemical potential with no fitting parameters. The theoretical predictions of the same theory at zero temperature are experimentally excluded over the measurement region from 250 to 517 nm. We have also investigated a dependence of the thermal correction to the Casimir force gradient on the values of the energy gap, chemical potential, and on the presence of a substrate supporting the graphene sheet. It is shown that the observed thermal effect is consistent in size with that arising for pristine graphene sheets if the impact of real conditions such as nonzero values of the energy gap, chemical potential, and the presence of a substrate is included. Implications of the obtained results to the resolution of the long-standing problems in Casimir physics are discussed. In addition to the paper published previously [M. Liu {\it et al}., Phys. Rev. We report precision measurements of the gradient of the Casimir force between an Au-coated sphere and graphene sheet deposited on a silica plate. The measurement data are compared with exact theory using the polarization tensor found in the framework of the Dirac model including effects of the nonzero chemical potential and energy gap of the graphene sample with no fitting parameters. The very good agreement between experiment and theory demonstrates the unusually big thermal effect at separations below 1 mum which has never been observed for conventional 3D materials. We report precision measurements of the Casimir interaction at larger separation distances between the Au-coated surfaces of a sphere and a plate in ultrahigh vacuum using a much softer cantilever of the dynamic atomic force microscope-based setup and two-step cleaning procedure of the vacuum chamber and test body surfaces by means of UV light and Ar-ion bombardment. Compared to the previously performed experiment, two more measurement sets for the gradient of the Casimir force are provided which confirmed and slightly improved the results. Next, additional measurements have been performed with a factor of two larger oscillation amplitude of the cantilever. This allowed obtaining meaningful results at much larger separation distances. The comparison of the measurement data with theoretical predictions of the Lifshitz theory using the dissipative Drude model to describe the response of Au to the low-frequency electromagnetic field fluctuations shows that this theoretical approach is experimentally excluded over the distances from 250 to 1100nm (i.e., a major step forward has been made as compared to the previous work where it was excluded up to only 820nm). The theoretical approach using the dissipationless plasma model at low frequencies is shown to be consistent with the data over the entire measurement range from 250 to 1300nm. We performed measurements of the gradient of the Casimir force between Au-coated surfaces of a sphere and a plate by means of significantly upgraded dynamic atomic force microscope (AFM) based technique. By introducing combined cleaning procedure of interior surfaces of the vacuum chamber and the test bodies by means of UV light and Ar ions, we reached higher vacuum and eliminated the role of electrostatic patches. Furthermore, the use of much softer cantilever allowed a sixfold decrease of the systematic error in measuring the force gradient. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions of the Lifshitz theory taking into account corrections due to the inaccuracy of the proximity force approximation and that due to surface roughness. It is shown that the theoretical approach accounting for the relaxation properties of free electrons is excluded by the data up to a larger than previous sphere-plate separation of 820~nm, whereas an alternative approach is found in a very good agreement with the data. A simple and robust fiber optical interferometer was developed to non-invasively study the weak piezoelectric effect from thin samples. A biological sample from inter-molt dactyl clubs obtained from the mantis shrimp was used as the test sample. The non-contact technique can measure displacements better than 0.5 picometer for samples subjected to large electric fields. The approach utilizes the phase dependent detection of an oscillating cavity at different frequencies from 0.5 kHz to 2.0 kHz. The piezoelectric constant of the biological samples was calculated from the optical interference fringes and determined to be in the range of 0.3-0.5 pm/V. The noise of 20 fm/Hz^0.5 in the setup is primarily due to thermally associated strains from current flow to the sample electrodes during the measurement.

Atomic Force Microscopy was utilized to study the morphology of Gag, {\Psi}RNA, and their binding complexes with lipids in a solution environment with 0.1{\AA} vertical and 1nm lateral resolution. TARpolyA RNA was used as a RNA control. The lipid used was phospha-tidylinositol-(4,5)-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2). The morphology of specific complexes Gag-{\Psi}RNA, Gag-TARpolyA RNA, Gag-PI(4,5)P2 and PI(4,5)P2-{\Psi}RNA-Gag were studied. They were imaged on either positively or negatively charged mica substrates depending on the net charges carried. Gag and its complexes consist of monomers, dimers and tetramers, which was confirmed by gel electrophoresis. The addition of specific {\Psi}RNA to Gag is found to increase Gag multimerization. Non-specific TARpolyA RNA was found not to lead to an increase in Gag multimerization. The addition PI(4,5)P2 to Gag increases Gag multimerization, but to a lesser extent than {\Psi}RNA. When both {\Psi}RNA and PI(4,5)P2 are present Gag undergoes comformational changes and an even higher degree of multimerization.

Feedback control theory has been extensively implemented to theoretically model human sensorimotor control. However, experimental platforms capable of manipulating important components of multiple feedback loops lack development. This paper describes the WheelCon, which is an open source platform aimed at resolving such insufficiencies. WheelCon enables safely simulation of the canonical sensorimotor task such as riding a mountain bike down a steep, twisting, bumpy trail etc., with provided only a computer, standard display, and an inexpensive gaming steering wheel with a force feedback motor. The platform provides flexibility, as will be demonstrated in the demos provided, so that researchers may manipulate the disturbances, delay, and quantization (data rate) in the layered feedback loops, including a high-level advanced plan layer and a low-level delayed reflex layer. In this paper, we illustrate WheelCon's graphical user interface (GUI), the input and output of existing demos, and how to design new games. In addition, we present the basic feedback model, and we show the testing results from our demo games which align well with prediction from the model. It is well known that residual electrostatic forces create significant difficulties to precise measurements of the Casimir force and to wide use of Casimir-operated microdevices. We experimentally demonstrate that with the help of Ar-ion cleaning of the surfaces it is possible to make electrostatic effects negligibly small as compared to the Casimir interaction. Our experimental setup consists of the dynamic atomic force microscope supplemented with an Ar-ion gun and argon reservoir. The residual potential difference between the Au-coated surfaces of a sphere and a plate was measured both before and after the in situ Ar-ion cleaning. It is shown that this cleaning decreases the magnitude of the residual potential by up to an order of magnitude and makes it almost independent on separation. The gradient of the Casimir force was measured using ordinary samples subjected to the Ar-ion cleaning. The obtained results are shown to be in good agreement with both previous precision measurements using the specially selected samples and with theoretical predictions of the Lifshitz theory. The conclusion is made that the suggested method of in situ Ar-ion cleaning is effective in reducing the electrostatic effects and therefore is a great resource for experiments on measuring the Casimir interaction and for Casimir-operated microdevices., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in Phys.
