Search

Phonons, or vibrational quanta, are behind some of the most fundamental physical phenomena in solids, including superconductivity, Raman processes, and broken-symmetry phases. It is therefore of fundamental importance to find ways to harness phonons for controlling these phenomena and developing novel quantum technologies. However, the majority of current phonon control techniques rely on the use of intense external driving fields or strong anharmonicities, which restricts their range of applications. Here, we present a scheme for controlling the intensity fluctuations in phonon emission at room temperature based on multimode ultrastrong light--matter coupling. The multimode ultrastrong coupling regime is achieved by coupling two optical phonon modes in lead halide perovskites to an array of nanoslots, which operates as a single-mode cavity. The extremely small mode volume of the nanoslots enables unprecedented coupling strengths in a cavity phonon-polariton system. In the far-detuned, low-cavity-frequency regime, we demonstrate that the nanoslot resonator mediates an effective coupling between the phonon modes, resulting in superthermal phonon bunching in thermal equilibrium, both within the same mode and between different modes. Experimental results are in good agreement with a multimode Hopfield model. Our work paves the way for the tailoring of phonons to modify charge and energy transport in perovskite materials, with potential applications in light-collecting or emitting devices.

In 1964, Keldysh laid the groundwork for strong-field physics in atomic, molecular, and solid-state systems by delineating a ubiquitous transition from multiphoton absorption to quantum electron tunneling under intense AC driving forces. While both processes in semiconductors can generate carriers and result in photon emission through electron-hole recombination, the low quantum yields in most materials have hindered direct observation of the Keldysh crossover. Leveraging the large quantum yields of photoluminescence in lead halide perovskites, we show that we can not only induce bright light emission from extreme sub-bandgap light excitation but also distinguish between photon-induced and electric-field-induced processes. Our results are rationalized by the Landau-Dykhne formalism, providing insights into the non-equilibrium dynamics of strong-field light-matter interactions. These findings open new avenues for light upconversion and sub-bandgap photon detection, highlighting the potential of lead halide perovskites in advanced optoelectronic applications.

We report temperature-dependent spectroscopy on the layered (n=4) two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite (BA)(MA)PbI. Helicity-resolved steady-state photoluminescence (PL) reveals no optical degree of polarization. Time-resolved PL shows a photocarrier lifetime on the order of nanoseconds. From simultaneaously recorded time-resolved differential reflectivity (TR$\Delta$R) and time-resolved Kerr ellipticity (TRKE), a photocarrier lifetime of a few nanoseconds and a spin dephasing time on the order of picoseconds was found. This stark contrast in lifetimes clearly explains the lack of spin polarization in steady-state PL. While we observe clear temperature-dependent effects on the PL dynamics that can be related to structural dynamics, the spin dephasing is nearly T-independent. Our results highlight that spin dephasing in 2D (BA)(MA)PbI occurs at time scales faster than the exciton recombination time, which poses a bottleneck for applications aimingto utilize this degree of freedom.

We report that device architecture engineering has a substantial impact on the reverse bias instability that has been reported as a critical issue in commercializing perovskite solar cells. We demonstrate breakdown voltages exceeding -15 V in typical pin structured perovskite solar cells via two steps: i) using polymer hole transporting materials; ii) using a more electrochemically stable gold electrode. While device degradation can be exacerbated by higher reverse bias and prolonged exposure, our as-fabricated perovskite solar cells completely recover their performance even after stressing at -7 V for 9 hours both in the dark and under partial illumination. Following these observations, we systematically discuss and compare the reverse bias driven degradation pathways in perovskite solar cells with different device architectures. Our model highlights the role of electrochemical reaction rates and species in dictating the reverse bias stability of perovskite solar cells.

Excitons, bound electron-hole pairs, in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Organic Inorganic Perovskites (2D HOIPs) are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons (E-Ps) when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical cavity. In the case of 2D HOIPs, they can self-hybridize into E-Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the excitons. However, the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E-Ps in 2D HOIPs, including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces, remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that > 0.5 um thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E-P modes. These E-Ps have high Q factors (> 100) and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and emission. Through varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements, we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy upper E-Ps to lower energy, lower E-Ps. Finally, we also demonstrate that E-Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at interfaces. Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have emerged as semiconductor platforms for realizing efficient and durable optoelectronic devices. However, the reproducible synthesis of 2D perovskite crystals with desired layer thickness (or n value) greater than 2, has been an enduring challenge due to the lack of kinetic control (temperature, time, stoichiometry) for each layer thickness. Here, we demonstrate a novel method term as the kinetically controlled space confinement (KCSC) for the deterministic growth of phase pure Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and Dion-Jacobson (DJ) 2D perovskites. The phase-pure growth was achieved by progressively increasing the temperature (fixed time) or the crystallization time (fixed temperature), which allowed for an acute control of the crystallization kinetics. We also observe a systematic transformation from a lower n-value to n=3, 4, 5, 6 in 2D perovskites. In-situ photoluminescence spectroscopy and imaging suggest that the progressive transformation from lower to higher n-value occurs via intercalation of excess precursor ions. These experiments enabled the development of a machine learning assisted multi-parameter phase diagram, which predicts the growth of 2D phase with a specific n-value., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures

Direct visualization of ultrafast coupling between charge carriers and lattice degrees of freedom in photo-excited semiconductors has remained a long-standing challenge and is critical for understanding the light-induced physical behavior of materials under extreme non-equilibrium conditions. Here, by monitoring the evolution of the wave-vector resolved ultrafast electron diffraction intensity following above-bandgap photo-excitation, we obtain a direct visual of the structural dynamics in monocrystalline 2D perovskites. Analysis reveals a surprising, light-induced ultrafast lattice ordering resulting from a strong interaction between hot-carriers and the perovskite lattice, which induces an in-plane octahedra rotation, towards a more symmetric phase. Correlated ultrafast spectroscopy performed at the same carrier density as ultrafast electron diffraction reveals that the creation of a hot and dense electron-hole plasma triggers lattice ordering at short timescales by modulating the crystal cohesive energy. Finally, we show that the interaction between the carrier gas and the lattice can be altered by tailoring the rigidity of the 2D perovskite by choosing the appropriate organic spacer layer., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications due to their efficient light emission properties, and strong dielectric confinement effects. Raman spectroscopy is a versatile, non-contact and often non-destructive technique, widely used to characterize crystalline materials. However, the inherently weak phonon scattering, strong background, and complex nature of the Raman signals from HOIPs present challenges in obtaining reliable signals. Further, the fragile nature of the 2D HOIP crystals results in rapid degradation upon exposure to heat, light and moisture, which presents further difficulty in enhancing Raman scattered photon signals. Herein, we report a novel approach to enhance the weak Raman scattering signals in Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase HOIPs by introducing an open-cavity comprising HOIP crystals on a gold substrate. We observe 15x enhancement of the Raman signals due to the Purcell effect inside the high-index HOIP crystals. Light-matter coupling in excitonic materials has been the subject of intense investigation due to emergence of new excitonic materials. Two-dimensional layered hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites (2D HOIPs) support strongly bound excitons at room-temperatures with some of the highest oscillator strengths and electric loss tangents among the known excitonic materials. Here, we report strong light-matter coupling in Ruddlesden-Popper phase 2D-HOIPs crystals without the necessity of an external cavity. We report concurrent occurrence of multiple-orders of hybrid light-matter states via both reflectance and luminescence spectroscopy in thick (> 100 nm) crystals and near-unity absorption in thin (< 20 nm) crystals. We observe resonances with quality factors > 250 in hybridized exciton-polaritons and identify a linear correlation between exciton-polariton mode splitting and extinction coefficient of the various 2D-HOIPs. Our work opens the door to studying polariton dynamics in self-hybridized and open cavity systems with broad applications in optoelectronics and photochemistry.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic inorganic perovskite (HOIP) semiconductors have attracted widespread attention as a platform of next generation optoelectronic devices benefiting from their naturally occurring and tunable multiple quantum-well like (QW) structures, which enable a wide range of physical properties. Determining the intrinsic optical/electronic properties of 2D HOIPs is extremely important for further utility in photonic and optoelectronics devices. Here, we obtain the optical dielectric functions, complex refractive indices, and complex optical conductivities of both Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and Dion-Jacobsen (DJ) phases of 2D HOIPs as a function of the perovskite QW thickness via spectroscopic ellipsometry over a broad energy range of 0.73 - 3.34 eV. We identify a series of feature peaks in the dielectric functions, and explain the evolution of ground state exciton peak with unit cell thickness and changing excitonic confinement. We observe extraordinary values of optical extinction and electric loss tangents at the primary excitonic resonances and provide their detailed comparison with other known excitonic materials. Our study is expected to lay foundation for understanding optical properties of pure phase 2D HOIPs, which will be helpful for the accurate modelling of their photonics and optoelectronic devices.

We compare three representative high performance PV materials: halide perovskite MAPbI3, CdTe, and GaAs, in terms of photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, PL lineshape, carrier diffusion, and surface recombination, over multiple orders of photo-excitation density. An analytic model is used to describe the excitation density dependence of PL intensity and extract the internal PL efficiency and multiple pertinent recombination parameters. A PL imaging technique is used to obtain carrier diffusion length without using a PL quencher, thus, free of unintended influence beyond pure diffusion. Our results show that perovskite samples tend to exhibit lower Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) recombination rate in both bulk and surface, thus higher PL efficiency than the inorganic counterparts, particularly under low excitation density, even with no or preliminary surface passivation. PL lineshape and diffusion analysis indicate that there is considerable structural disordering in the perovskite materials, and thus photo-generated carriers are not in global thermal equilibrium, which in turn suppresses the nonradiative recombination. This study suggests that relatively low point-defect density, less detrimental surface recombination, and moderate structural disordering contribute to the high PV efficiency in the perovskite. This comparative photovoltaics study provides more insights into the fundamental material science and the search for optimal device designs by learning from different technologies.

We study spatial photoluminescence characteristics of neutral and charged excitons across extended monolayer MoS$_2$ synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Using two-dimensional hyperspectral photoluminescence mapping at cryogenic temperatures we identify regions with increased emission from charged excitons associated with both spin-orbit split valence subbands. Such regions are attributed to unintentional doping at defect sites with excess charge that bind neutral excitons to form defect-pinned trions. Our findings imply comparable timescales for the formation, relaxation, and radiative decay of $B$ trions, and add defect-localized $A$ and $B$ trions to the realm of photoexcited quasiparticles in layered semiconductors.

Transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors represent elementary components of layered heterostructures for emergent technologies beyond conventional opto-electronics. In their monolayer form they host electrons with quantized circular motion and associated valley polarization and valley coherence as key elements of opto-valleytronic functionality. Here, we introduce two-dimensional polarimetry as means of direct imaging of the valley pseudospin degree of freedom in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. Using MoS$_2$ as a representative material with valley-selective optical transitions, we establish quantitative image analysis for polarimetric maps of extended crystals, and identify valley polarization and valley coherence as sensitive probes of crystalline disorder. Moreover, we find site-dependent thermal and non-thermal regimes of valley-polarized excitons in perpendicular magnetic fields. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of wide-field polarimetry for rapid inspection of opto-valleytronic devices based on atomically thin semiconductors and heterostructures.

Atomically thin crystals of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host excitons with strong binding energies and sizable light-matter interactions. Coupled to optical cavities, monolayer TMDs routinely reach the regime of strong light-matter coupling, where excitons and photons admix coherently to form quasiparticles known as polaritons up to room temperature. Here, we explore the two-dimensional nature of TMD polaritons with cavity-assisted hyperspectral imaging. Using extended WS$_2$ monolayers, we establish the regime of strong coupling with a scanning microcavity to map out polariton properties and correlate their spatial features with intrinsic and extrinsic effects. We find a high level of homogeneity, and show that polariton splitting variations are correlated with intrinsic exciton properties such as oscillator strength and linewidth. Moreover, we observe a deviation from thermal equilibrium in the resonant polariton population, which we ascribe to non-perturbative polariton-phonon coupling. Our measurements reveal a promisingly consistent polariton landscape, and highlight the importance of phonons for future polaritonic devices., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We report successful deposition of high quantum efficiency (QE) bialkali antimonide K2CsSb photocathodes on graphene films. The results pave a pathway towards an ultimate goal of encapsulating technologically-relevant photocathodes for accelerator technology with an atomically-thin protecting layer to enhance lifetime while minimizing QE losses. A QE of 17 % at ~3.1 eV (405 nm) is the highest value reported so far on graphene substrates and is comparable to that obtained on stainless steel and nickel reference substrates. The spectral responses of the photocathodes on graphene exhibit signature features of K2CsSb including the characteristic absorption at ~2.5 eV. Materials characterization based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that the composition and crystal quality of these photocathodes deposited on graphene is comparable to those deposited on a reference substrate. Quantitative agreement between optical calculations and QE measurements for the K2CsSb on free suspended graphene and a graphene coated metal substrate further confirms the high quality interface between the photocathodes and graphene. Finally, a correlation between the QE and graphene quality as characterized by Raman spectroscopy suggests that a lower density of atomistic defects in the graphene films leads to higher QE of the deposited K2CsSb photocathodes., Comment: accepted to Advanced Materials Interfaces

Monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) integrated in optical microcavities host exciton-polaritons as a hallmark of the strong light-matter coupling regime. Analogous concepts for hybrid light-matter systems employing spatially indirect excitons with a permanent electric dipole moment in heterobilayer (HBL) crystals promise realizations of exciton-polariton gases and condensates with immanent dipolar interactions. Here, we identify optical signatures of spatially indirect momentum-bright and momentum-dark interlayer excitons in vertical MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterostructures and implement cavity-control of both exciton manifolds. Our experiments quantify the strength of light-matter coupling for both zero and finite momentum excitons residing in Moir\'{e} superlattices of TMD HBLs and demonstrate that both exciton species are susceptible to Purcell enhancement in cavity-modified photonic environments. Our results form the basis for further developments of dipolar exciton-polariton gases and condensates in hybrid cavity -- van der Waals heterostructure systems.

The hexagonal structure of graphene gives rise to the property of gas impermeability, motivating its investigation for a new application: protection of semiconductor photocathodes in electron accelerators. These materials are extremely susceptible to degradation in efficiency through multiple mechanisms related to contamination from the local imperfect vacuum environment of the host photoinjector. Few-layer graphene has been predicted to permit a modified photoemission response of protected photocathode surfaces, and recent experiments of single-layer graphene on copper have begun to confirm these predictions for single crystal metallic photocathodes. Unlike metallic photoemitters, the integration of an ultra-thin graphene barrier film with conventional semiconductor photocathode growth processes is not straightforward. A first step toward addressing this challenge is the growth and characterization of technologically relevant, high quantum efficiency bialkali photocathodes grown on ultra-thin free-standing graphene substrates. Photocathode growth on free-standing graphene provides the opportunity to integrate these two materials and study their interaction. Specifically, spectral response features and photoemission stability of cathodes grown on graphene substrates are compared to those deposited on established substrates. In addition we observed an increase of work function for the graphene encapsulated bialkali photocathode surfaces, which is predicted by our calculations. The results provide a unique demonstration of bialkali photocathodes on free-standing substrates, and indicate promise towards our goal of fabricating high-performance graphene encapsulated photocathodes with enhanced lifetime for accelerator applications., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, accepted to npj 2D Materials and Applications

We report valence band electronic structure evolution of graphene oxide (GO) upon its thermal reduction. Degree of oxygen functionalization was controlled by annealing temperatures, and an electronic structure evolution was monitored using real-time ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. We observed a drastic increase in density of states around the Fermi level upon thermal annealing at ~600 oC. The result indicates that while there is an apparent band gap for GO prior to a thermal reduction, the gap closes after an annealing around that temperature. This trend of band gap closure was correlated with electrical, chemical, and structural properties to determine a set of GO material properties that is optimal for optoelectronics. The results revealed that annealing at a temperature of ~500 oC leads to the desired properties, demonstrated by a uniform and an order of magnitude enhanced photocurrent map of an individual GO sheet compared to as-synthesized counterpart., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures in physica status solidi (a) 2016

Perovskites are promising next-generation absorber materials for low-cost and high-efficiency solar cells. Although perovskite cells are configured similar to the classical solar cells, their operation is unique and requires development of a new physical model for characterization, optimization of the cells, and prediction of the panel performance. In this paper, we develop such a physics-based analytical model to describe the operation of different types of perovskite solar cells, explicitly accounting non-uniform generation, carrier selective transport layers, and voltage-dependent carrier collection. The model would allow experimentalists to characterize key parameters of existing cells, understand performance bottlenecks, and predict performance of perovskite-based solar panel - the obvious next step to the evolution of perovskite solar cell technology., Comment: in IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics, 2005

The ability to synthesize high-quality samples over large areas and at low cost is one of the biggest challenges during the developmental stage of any novel material. While chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods provide a promising low-cost route for CMOS compatible, large-scale growth of materials, it often falls short of the high-quality demands in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. We present large-scale CVD synthesis of single- and few- layered MoS2 using direct vapor-phase sulfurization of MoO2, which enables us to obtain extremely high-quality single-crystal monolayer MoS2 samples with field-effect mobility exceeding 30 cm2/Vs in monolayers. These samples can be readily synthesized on a variety of substrates, and demonstrate a high-degree of optoelectronic uniformity in Raman and photoluminescence mapping over entire crystals with areas exceeding hundreds of square micrometers. Owing to their high crystalline quality, Raman spectroscopy on these samples reveal a range of multi-phonon processes through peaks with equal or better clarity compared to past reports on mechanically exfoliated samples. This enables us to investigate the layer thickness- and substrate-dependence of the extremely weak phonon processes at 285 cm-1 and 487 cm-1 in 2D MoS2. The ultra-high, optoelectronic-grade crystalline quality of these samples could be further established through photocurrent spectroscopy, which clearly reveal excitonic states at room temperature, a feat that has been previously demonstrated only on device fabricated with mechanically exfoliated that were artificially suspended across trenches. A fundamental understanding of the intrinsic optoelectronic properties of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is crucial for its integration into high performance semiconductor devices. Here, we investigate the transport properties of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) under photo-excitation using correlated scanning photocurrent microscopy and photoluminescence imaging. We examined the effect of local phase transformation underneath the metal electrodes on the generation of photocurrent across the channel length with diffraction-limited spatial resolution. While maximum photocurrent generation occurs at the Schottky contacts of semiconducting (2H-phase) MoS2, after the metallic phase transformation (1T-phase), the photocurrent peak is observed towards the center of the device channel, suggesting a strong reduction of native Schottky barriers. Analysis using the bias and position dependence of the photocurrent indicates that the Schottky barrier heights are few meV for 1T- and ~200 meV for 2H-contacted devices. We also demonstrate that a reduction of native Schottky barriers in a 1T device enhances the photo responsivity by more than one order of magnitude, a crucial parameter in achieving high performance optoelectronic devices. The effect of a magnetic field on the electroluminescence of organic light emitting devices originates from the hyperfine interaction between the electron/hole polarons and the hydrogen nuclei of the host molecules. In this paper, we present an analytical theory of magneto-electroluminescence for organic semiconductors. To be specific, we focus on bilayer heterostructure devices. In the case we are considering, light generation at the interface of the donor and acceptor layers results from the formation and recombination of exciplexes. The spin physics is described by a stochastic Liouville equation for the electron/hole spin density matrix. By finding the steady-state analytical solution using Bloch-Wangsness-Redfield theory, we explore how the singlet/triplet exciplex ratio is affected by the hyperfine interaction strength and by the external magnetic field. To validate the theory, spectrally-resolved electroluminescence experiments on BPhen/m-MTDATA devices are analyzed. With increasing emission wavelength, the width of the magnetic field modulation curve of the electroluminescence increases while its depth decreases. These observations are consistent with the model. Finally, the analytical theory is extended to account for an additional low-field structure due to the exchange interaction in the weakly bound polaron-pair states.

Encapsulation of electronic devices based on organic materials that are prone to degradation even under normal atmospheric conditions with hermetic barriers is crucial for increasing their lifetime. A challenge is to develop 'ultrabarriers' that are impermeable, flexible, and preferably transparent. Another important requirement is that they must be compatible with organic electronics fabrication schemes (i.e. must be solution processable, deposited at room temperature and be chemically inert). Here, we report lifetime increase of 1,300 hours for poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) films encapsulated by uniform and continuous thin (~10 nm) films of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). This level of protection against oxygen and water vapor diffusion is substantially better than conventional polymeric barriers such as CytopTM, which degrades after only 350 hours despite being 400 nm thick. Analysis using atomic force microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy suggest that the superior oxygen gas/moisture barrier property of rGO is due to the close interlayer distance packing and absence of pinholes within the impermeable sheets. These material properties can be correlated to the enhanced lag time of 500 hours. We observe a strong peak in the capacitive photocurrent of a MDMO-PPV / PCBM bulk heterojunction solar cell for excitation below the absorbance threshold energy. Illumination at the peak energy blocks charge capture at other wavelengths, and causes the photovoltage to drop dramatically. These results suggest that the new peak is due to a charge transfer state, which provides a pathway for charge separation and photocurrent generation in the solar cell., Comment: submitted to Physical Review Letters
