Oil spills from pipeline accidents can have long-lasting health effects on residents of polluted regions. Assessing the potential health risk of these accidents is crucial for effective environmental health management. This study analyzed the concentration of 2-OHNAP in urine and hair as biomarkers of PAHs exposure among the people living in a region with frequent oil pipeline incident in Iran. Fifty pairs of hair and urine samples were collected from residents along with demographic information and dietary habits via a questionnaire. The concentration of 2-OHNAP was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). 2-OHNAP was detected in 100% of urine and 88% of hair samples. The mean concentration of 2-OHNAP in urine was 16.65 ± 21.98 μg/g creatinine and in hair was 8.16±7.62 ng/g dry weight (dw). However, there was no significant correlations between the levels of 2-OHNAP in urine and hair. The mean values of HQ and CR were below 1 and 10-6, respectively. Moreover, some simulated health risk indices were near the threshold levels, and the carcinogenic risk above 70% of the simulated CRs was above 10-6 as well. Therefore, the health risk attributed to the exposure to the parent compound of 2-OHNAP in the study area is currently acceptable, but it is not negligible and may be worsened in the future. This study provides a valuable scientific information for regional decision makers and stakeholders about human health programs and identification of environmental health priorities.

Background and Objective: Agricultural lands around Tehran may become contaminated due to their proximity to pollution sources and such pollution should be investigated. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to determine the pollution levels of some trace elements in the agricultural soils around Tehran and to assess the attributed health risks. Materials and Methods: In this study, 43 soil samples were collected from agricultural lands around Tehran. The soil samples were prepared and acid-digested and the concentrations of Vanadium (V), Lithium (Li), Lanthanum (La), Molybdenum (Mo), and Antimony (Sb) were measured by ICP-OES. Based on the concentrations of the elements in soil, the pollution indices and non-carcinogenic risk (based on Monte Carlo simulation) were assessed. Results: Among the studied elements, V had the highest concentration (131 mg/kg) followed by La > Li > Sb > Mo. The values of the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and enrichment factor (EF) were in the ranges of -1.9 to 0.8 and 0.5 to 3.1, respectively. The Nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI) values were in the range of 1.3 to 2.0. The values of non-carcinogenic risk for Li, Mo, Sb, and V were negligible, but it exceeded the threshold limit for La. Conclusion: This study showed that the agricultural lands around Tehran are contaminated with studied trace elements to a low to moderate extent. However, an unacceptable non-carcinogenic risk attributed to La was estimated. Therefore, it is essential to pay special attention to the La pollution of agricultural soils around Tehran.

Plasmons in graphene present desirable electronic properties and unique opportunities to enhance light–matter interactions and control light at nanoscale dimensions. The combination of graphene with metal nanostructures is promising for optical science and plasmonic manipulations. We propose a graphene plasmonic system based on a resonant metal antenna for detection and counting of nanoparticles. The performance of the proposed system relies on the intrinsic properties of particles, including the refractive index, which can be used to modulate the transmitted power. Simulations show that, by a small change in the refractive index of the particle, the transmitted output power changes significantly. A local change of ±10% in the refractive index of a 50-nm dielectric particle around the nanopore results in a ∓2.3% variation in the transmitted power corresponding to a sensor sensitivity of 415 nm/RIU. Small particles with a diameter of 20 ​nm can be detected using this configuration. The placement of a nanopore and nanoparticle in front of the metal antenna can change the spatial near-filed distribution of graphene plasmons and control their propagation wavefronts. Furthermore, the proposed structure with its small footprint can be readily integrated into lab-on-a-chip devices for practical biosensing applications. This plasmonic device is promising for use in single-particle detection and biological applications.

In the present study, a new sorbent was fabricated from Palm kernel (PK) by dry thermochemical activation with NaOH and characterized by FTIR, X-ray diffraction, FE-SEM and BET, which was used for the Amoxicillin (AMX) sorption from aqueous solution. The influence of effective parameters such as pH, reaction time, adsorbent dosage, AMX concentration and ionic strength on the sorption efficacy of AMX removal were evaluated. The main functional groups on the surface of the magnetic activated carbon of Palm Kernel (MA-PK) were C–C, C–O, CO and hydroxyl groups. The specific surface of char, activated carbon Palm Kernel (AC-PK) and MA-PK were 4.3, 1648.8 and 1852.4 m2/g, respectively. The highest sorption of AMX (400 mg/L) was obtained by using 1 g/L of sorbent at solution pH of 5 after 60 min contact time, which corresponding to 98.77%. Non-linear and linear models of isotherms and kinetics models were studied. The data fitted well with Hill isotherm (R2 = 0.987) and calculated maximum sorption capacity were 719.07 and 512.27 mg/g from Hill and Langmuir, respectively. A study of kinetics shows that the adsorption of AMX follows the Elovich model with R2 = 0.9998. Based on the artificial neural network (ANN) modeling, the MA-PK dosage and contact time showed the most important parameters in the removal of AMX with relative importance of 36.5 and 25.7%, respectively. Lastly, the fabricated MA-PK was successfully used to remove the AMX from hospital wastewater.

Rapid, accurate, and label-free detection of biomolecules and chemical substances remains a challenge in healthcare. Optical biosensors have been considered as biomedical diagnostic tools required in numerous areas including the detection of viruses, food monitoring, diagnosing pollutants in the environment, global personalized medicine, and molecular diagnostics. In particular, the broadly emerging and promising technique of surface plasmon resonance has established to provide real-time and label-free detection when used in biosensing applications in a highly sensitive, specific, and cost-effective manner with small footprint platform. In this study we propose a novel plasmonic biosensor based on biaxially crumpled graphene structures, wherein plasmon resonances in graphene are utilized to detect variations in the refractive index of the sample medium. Shifts in the resonance wavelength of the plasmon modes for a given change in the RI of the surrounding analyte are calculated by investigating the optical response of crumpled graphene structures on different substrates using theoretical computations based on the finite element method combined with the semiclassical Drude model. The results reveal a high sensitivity of 4990 nm/RIU, corresponding to a large figure-of-merit of 20 for biaxially crumpled graphene structures on polystyrene substrates. We demonstrate that biaxially crumpled graphene exhibits superior sensing performance compared with a uniaxial structure. According to the results, crumpled graphene structures on a titanium oxide substrate can improve the sensor sensitivity by avoiding the damping effects of polydimethylsiloxane substrates. The enhanced sensitivity and broadband mechanical tunability of the biaxially crumpled graphene render it a promising platform for biosensing applications.

Introduction: Heavy metals (HMs) accumulated in the road dust may be transferred to the surrounding land and water bodies and pose ecological risks. Hence, such pollution should be considered, especially in coastal roads. This study focuses on the HMs pollution of dust settled on the surface of coastal roads along the Persian Gulf in Bandar Abbas city. Materials and Methods: In this study, road dust samples were collected from 13 points in coastal roads and analyzed by ICP-OES for the measurement of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Pb. Based on the HMs contents of dust, pollution, and ecological risk indices, including contamination factor (CF), modified pollution index (MPI), and modified ecological risk index (MRI) were calculated. Results: Among the studied HMs, Cu (4.73) showed the highest CF value. The levels of MPI showed that the road dust was strongly polluted by HMs (4.02), but it was mainly contributed by a low toxic metal (Cu). Therefore, the mean value of MRI was 132.3, indicating the low ecological risk of such pollution. Note that the MRI value was > 150 in some sampling points, indicating moderate ecological risk. Conclusion: This study showed that the road dust along the Persian Gulf coastline is polluted to different levels of the studied HMs and may pose various levels of ecological risks. The current level of HMs pollution in the study area was not significantly high. However, high pollution levels in the west roads should not be overlooked.

Background and Objective: In some villages of Mazandaran, drinking water may be polluted with various pollutants, especially heavy metals (HMs), due to the shallow depth of drinking water sources and the proximity of these sources to farmlands. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the HM pollution level of drinking water in some villages of Mazandaran province and to assess the attributed health risks. Abstract A high-performance electro-optic Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) with outstanding characteristics is proposed. The MZM is in a push-pull configuration that is constructed using an ITO/graphene-based silicon waveguide. A novel idea for engineering of the plasma dispersion effect in an ITO/graphene-based waveguide is proposed so that the modulation characteristics of the MZM are highly improved. Plasma dispersion effects of ITO and graphene layers are tailored in such a way that a large difference between real parts of guided mode effective index of the two arms is achieved while their corresponding imaginary parts are equal. As a result, a very low $${{\mathrm {V}}}_{\pi }L_{\pi }$$ V π L π of $$10 \, \hbox {V} \upmu \hbox {m}$$ 10 V μ m is achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the lowest $${{\mathrm {V}}}_{\pi }L_{\pi }$$ V π L π reported for an electro-optic modulator. In addition, the proposed modulator exhibits a very high extinction ratio of more than 30 dB, low insertion loss of 2.8 dB and energy consumption of as low as 10 fJ/bit, which are all promising for optical communication and processing systems.

Life cycle assessment and machine learning were combined to find the best option for Tehran's waste management for future pandemics. The ReCipe results showed the waste's destructive effects after COVID-19 were greater than before due to waste composition changes. Plastic waste has changed from 7.5 to 11%. Environmental burdens of scenarios were Sc-1 (increase composting to 50%) > Sc-3 > Sc-4 > Sc-b2 > Sc-5 > Sc-2 (increase recycling from 9 to 20%). The artificial neural network and gradient-boosted regression tree could predict environmental impacts with high R2. Based on the results, the environmental burdens of solid waste after COVID-19 should be investigated.

Background and Objective: Among the emerging contaminants, microplastics threaten public health. This study aimed to determine microplastic and mesoplastics in soil of residential areas adjacent to Tehran Landfill and assess its ecological risk. Materials and Methods: The present descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 20 shallow and deep soil samples from residential areas near the Tehran landfill in July 2021. The microplastics were floated in NaCl and ZnCl2 solutions, and the mesoplastics were separated manually. The identification of physical and chemical properties of polymers was performed by stereomicroscope and FTIR analysis, respectively. Results: The average amount of micro-plastics in shallow and deep soils estimated 76±34.98 and 24.7±19.79 particles/kgsoil, respectively. The average amount of mesoplastics obtained 5.25±2.91 and 3.55±1.09 particles/kgsoil, in shallow and deep soils, respectively. Background: The patient's position during the recovery time after arthroplasty surgery can be a factor in reducing complications and improving patients’ condition. Therefore, this study was performed to compare the knee range of motion after soft tissue repair in both flexion and extension positions of total knee arthroplasty. Methods: This study is a double-blind clinical trial. The study population was all candidates for total knee arthroplasty surgery in Al-Zahra and Kashani hospitals in Isfahan from July 2011 to September 2012. The sample size was selected using the statistical formula of 88 patients and randomly divided into two groups of flexion and extension. In the first group during the knee soft tissue repair, the knee was in flexion and in the second group it was in extension and then it was repaired. Information such as age, sex, body mass index and surgical position were recorded in the checklist. The knee range of motion was measured at the end of the first, second, fourth, eighth and twelfth weeks and recorded in a checklist. In order to compare the pattern of changes in mean knee range of motion over time in the two groups, mixed linear models and conventional marginal models to generalized estimator equations were used by STATA software. Background and Objective: Changes in the quantity and quality of waste produced as a result of compliance with health protocols are the result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The present study aimed to determine the quantity of personal protection equipment produced in Tehran and people’s knowledge of its management. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study was carried out on 2560 participants in Tehran through an online survey in spring 2020. Based on the percentage of using masks and gloves, the amount of produced waste was calculated, and Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis statistical tests were run to explore the relationship between the variables. Results: The overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.94, and the rate of mask and glove use was 90.7% and 65.7%, respectively. 70.3% and 52% of the population used two masks and one pair of gloves on a daily basis. Background and Objective: Heavy metal (HM) pollution of settled dust on the interior surfaces of elementary schools may affect the health of young students; hence, the health risk of such pollution should be assessed. Therefore, the aims of this study were to measure the content of heavy metals in the settled dust in the indoor of elementary schools in Bandar Abbas and to assess the attributed health risks. Materials and Methods: In this study, dust samples were collected from the interior surfaces of elementary schools in Bandar Abbas. Settled dust samples were digested using aqua regia solution and then their metals contents were measured using ICP-OES. To assess the health risk attributed to this pollution, daily intake doses through ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption routes were estimated. Then, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were calculated considering the daily intake doses and toxicity factors. Results: The average concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, nickel and lead in settled dust were 5.45, 0.58, 11.44, 69.72, 83.95 and 66.72 mg/kg, respectively. The non-carcinogenic risk level for all metals was below threshold, while the carcinogenic risk level for arsenic (2.18×10-6) exceeded the threshold. Conclusion: This study showed that the settled dust in elementary schools of Bandar Abbas is polluted with various levels of heavy metals. Health risk assessment showed that the exposure to dust containing heavy metals in the elementary schools of Bandar Abbas does not pose significant non-carcinogenic risk, but the carcinogenic risk of As exceeded the threshold limit and should be considered.

Abstract Drought stress is the most important limiting factor in crop plants including maize (Zea mays L.), which is the third important world crop after wheat and rice. To examine the quantity and quality of forage as well as energy and water productivity of two maize varieties to drought stress, a field experiment was carried out as a split plot based on a completely randomized block design with three replications in Isfahan, Iran, during 2017 and 2018 growing seasons. The main and sub-plots were three irrigation regimes (100%, 80, and 60% full irrigation) and two maize varieties (704 and Maxima), respectively. Data analysis showed that drought stress harmed wet and dry forage yield and energy productivity, while its effect was positive on some forage quality such as ash, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), hemicellulose free cell wall (ADF), and lignin (ADL). Based on results, drought stress of 60% full irrigation resulted in reduced wet and dry forage maize yields. In addition, drought stress affected relationships among measured traits. According to increasing dried fodder and decreasing output energy under stress conditions, early mature variety Maxima is more proper to be used under drought stress. Besides, the Maxima variety was shown to be a suitable variety due to increasing dry matter and crude protein as well as decrease ADF and ADL than the 704 variety. Article Highlights We submit an original research article entitled Effect of water stress on forage yield and quality and water and energy productivity in Maize (Zea mays L.). In this paper, we indicated regarding to impacts of climate change phenomenon throughout the world on crop production, especially in arid regions such as Iran, choosing proper variety can be one of the best candidates to provide for forage. The results of present paper have shown that the drought stress had no effect on water productivity of two maize varieties. The superiority of some forage quality traits in drought stress compared to the control in maize means that in drought conditions, maize forage can be used and increase the profitability of livestock products.

Satisfying indoor air quality in public environments has become essential in cities. In the present study, indoor PM2.5, CO2, NO2, SO2, nicotine, and BTEX have been assessed in 12 categories of public places. The highest average concentrations of PM2.5, NO2, and SO2 were observed in waterpipe cafés (233, 29.6, and 5.1 µg/m3), whereas the lowest concentrations were found in health clubs and hospitals, respectively. Moreover, indoor BTEX concentration varied from 69.5 µg/m3 (passenger terminals) to 1739.2 µg/m3 (elderly care centers). Given nicotine, the highest concentrations were found in waterpipe cafés, ranging from approximately 11.0 to 50 µg/m3. The mean hazard quotient (HQ) and Hazard Index (HI) for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene were calculated in all types of public environments, and results showed that the amount of HQ and HI in none of the places was more than 1. Furthermore, the lifetime cancer risk (LTCR) exceeded the guideline threshold in hospitals, restaurants, elderly care centers, passenger terminals, movie theaters, and beauty salons. The findings of our study indicate that the indoor air quality in most public settings within Tehran city is not acceptable and necessitates appropriate management. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring indoor air quality and implementing effective strategies to mitigate exposure to air pollutants.

Cephalosporin is a group of β-lactam antibiotics that has a wide antibacterial ability, so its therapeutic use is high. Although much research has been conducted about the fate of antibiotics in an aquatic environment, little investigation has been done about the removal of cephalosporin. In this study, Cefepime, a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic was selected and different tests such as UV/TiO2, UV, TiO2 under darkness, and TiO2 under sunlight were applied to determine whether these methods are effective ways to remove Cefepime from aqueous solutions or not. Different amounts of catalyst and different pHs were used as effective parameters on degradation efficiency and were optimized. The Cefepime removal was measured by HPLC. The mobile phase was comprised of 10:90 Acetonitrile: water with a flow rate of 1 mL/min. The detected wavelength was 212 nm. Maximum removal efficiency (92.9%) for 20 mg/L Cefepime in neutral pH and catalyst dose of 70 mg/L after 120 min irradiation was observed. At the same conditions, the degradation efficiencies for UV, TiO2 under sunlight, and TiO2 under darkness were determined 77.65%, 53.24%, and 15.12% respectively. Also, the reaction rate constant was increased from 0.0054 to 0.0279 (1/min) for photolysis and photocatalysis, respectively. This work was economically compared with photolysis and the result showed that the EEO for the UV/TiO2 process was five times lower than UV processes.UV/TiO2 process could be an efficient method to successfully remove the Cefepime antibiotic from aqueous solutions.

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that is relatively common in the distal extremities. Primary SS of bone is an extremely rare finding. Here in this report, we present a 44-year-old male patient referred with bone and later bone fracture that was finally diagnosed with primary SS of thumerus. So far, 13 documented cases of primary SS of the bone have been reported. The current case is the second known case of primary SS of humerus. Our case was treated with both neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapies associated with surgical tumor removal and prosthesis implantation. Follow-up of the case demonstrated significant remission but with late metastasis and subsequent advanced chemotherapy regimens.

Aim and Background: Suicide as one of the leading causes of death worldwide is a major public health concern; however, few studies have examined the factors influencing it in families on the verge of divorce. To determine the prediction of tendency to suicide based on the difficulty of emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, family flexibility, and distress tolerance in adolescents and young families on the eve of divorce in Isfahan. Methods and Materials: The present study was a descriptive correlation that was performed in the statistical population of all adolescents and young families on the eve of divorce in Isfahan in the second six months of 2019-2020. According to the Cochran's formula, 373 people were selected and answered Beck scale for suicide ideation, difficulties in emotion regulation scale, cognitive flexibility inventory, family flexibility questionnaire and distress tolerance scale. Data collected by Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise regression were analyzed using SPSS-24 software. Background and Aims: There are various methods for the disinfection of infectious wastes which are of great importance due to their potential health and environmental risks and there are different insights about their management in Iran. Hence, the aim of this study was to survey the various aspects of disinfection methods of infectious waste on the basis of environmental health specialist insights. Material and Methods: For performing this study, a questionnaire was prepared and the opinions of the specialists were gathered about five disinfection and disposal methods of infectious wastes, and finally the data were analyzed. Moreover, the preferences of the specialists for selecting each method were also asked based on 9 various aspects. Results: It was found that health issues received the highest priority (with 26% of desirability) from the specialists in selecting the method, while the lowest priority was assigned for financial issues (with 8% of desirability) and political acceptability (with 6% of desirability). Environmental health specialists believed that autoclaving and waste incinerating with 77.8% and 44.1% of desirability, respectively, are the most favorable and undesirable methods for disinfecting the infectious wastes. The results showed that the disinfection is a top priority for the specialists, and, with respect to current situation, they did not make any significant difference between on-site and ex-situ disinfecting methods, which is reflected in the scores of 3.65 and 3.72 for these two scenarios. Conclusion: Overall, health aspects have the most important priority in the management of infectious wastes. Therefore, autoclaving and microwaving are the most appropriate methods for the disinfection of such wastes. Landfilling and incineration were not suggested for the disposal or treatment of infectious wastes.
