This study deals with the translation of syntactic features in legal documents from Arabic into English. It aims to identify the syntactic features and to describe translatability of the syntactic features of Arabic and English Sharia divorce documents, accordingly, will help in assessing translators’ choices ad decisions. Being a qualitative descriptive study, samples of translated divorce contracts have been collected from Palestinian sworn translators and translation certified offices. Data is collected manually, and analysed using purposeful sampling, open-ended data collection, and personal interpretation. Analysis of the differences of syntactic features between Arabic and English divorce sharia court documents revealed that differences lie in the following aspects: the form of complex sentence structure, use of passive, use of nominal forms, binominals and triplets, modal verbs, conditional sentences, and the form of pronouns. The study concluded that the differences between Arabic and English syntactic features resulted in some problems of mother tongue influence, and using redundant synonyms and the literal translation of the successive dependent and parenthetical phrases which make the sentence long and complex, accordingly, not easy to be comprehended. Translation studies in the 1960s have evolved due to the concept of culture turn which embodies gender translation problems. Gender is a culture-specific problem because languages have different peculiarities of natural gender, grammatical gender, and dual gender, which need a semantic cultural approach. This paper is a comparative qualitative study on translators' manipulation of gender in translation. Being a product-oriented study, it examines and compares existing translations of the novels, "I am Malala" and "Things Fall Apart" from English into Malay, French and Spanish to construct a translation modelling. The source texts (STs) and target texts (TTs) are wholly read; data related to natural gender, grammatical gender, and dual gender are identified, collected, and analyzed. The analysis is done following Leech's (1974/1981) theory on meaning. The research reveals that natural gender is translated literally from English into Malay, French, and Spanish; grammatical gender is also translated literally from English into French and Spanish, whereas in Malay a generalization is used for grammatical gender owing to the Malay language peculiarities. The research reveals also that there are meaning losses and malpresentation of women in dual gender nouns translation in French and Spanish due to biased orthodox patriarchal manipulation preference, which makes the masculine represent the feminine in dual gender nouns. Ellipsis is a cohesive device that omits an element or elements in a sentence whose interpretation depends on presupposition in the context; it is about linguistic changes that occur in translation. This study aims to describe ellipsis, shift and their effect on meaning in French-English translation. The study is a qualitative research study carried out manually on Madame Bovary. The novel is wholly read, and passages of the novel which demonstrate cohesive devices of ellipsis and shift are selected and analysed. This study is supported by Halliday and Hasan's theory (1976) of textual cohesion and Catford's theory (1965) of translation shifts. The analysis reveals that English is more elliptical, whereas French is more demonstrative due to some language peculiarities and language norms. It specifies that some language peculiarities (concreteness and abstractness) and language norms (language usage options) are determinants of the translation procedures of ellipsis from French into English. Class shift and modulation are the translation procedures that are more functional than other shift categories and translation procedures in dealing with ellipses in French-English translation. Culture is about the mode of life and activity, way of thinking, and artifacts, which are associated with particular communities and the language which serves as a vehicle for meanings. This paper is aimed at describing cultural challenges and their translation procedures from English into Arabic; it also investigates choices of translation procedures that can be used to overcome cultural aspects problems. This study limits itself to cultural factors. It follows Newmark’s approach (1988) on culture translation. The corpus of this study is a play entitled A Dance of The Forests written by Wole Soyinka. The study is a qualitative study and cultural occurrences are analyzed and their translations are rated by raters who are native speakers of Arabic. The research reveals that translating a literary work like a play requires the use of strategies and procedures like domestication and oblique translation procedures, which are found to be vital in translating drama text from English into Arabic. Translating literary works is a challenging task, especially when attempting to integrate numerous linguistically, artistically, and culturally varied languages. The main objective of this research is to describe the initial norms that regulate the translation of Arabic cultural references translated in Basma Abdelaziz's Arabic novel, The Queue. This novel by Basma Abdelaziz was chosen for examination because it contains a lot of cultural references that reflect cultural values. To detect translation shifts and techniques used by the Queue's translator, the major principles and components of Toury's theory of norms, Newmark's classification of cultural items, and translation techniques proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) will be used. The techniques for translating Arabic cultural references reflect the translators' individual attitudes toward ST norms as well as their adherence to linguistic and cultural standards prevalent in the TL setting. Overall, there is some heterogeneity in the degree of leaning toward SL or TL norms. According to Toury's norms model, the general trend of translational norms appears to lean more towards the acceptability pole than the adequacy pole, implying that a TL-oriented strategy is preferred. The study reveals that when translating cultural references into English, the Queue's translator used four primary strategies: modulation, transposition, adaption, and deletion. To create a human community with a shared future, cultural exchanges between countries should be strengthened (Xi, 2020, p. 365). Classical Chinese poetry is an important part of the communication of Chinese culture. The most translated Li Bai's poems in Cathay not only promoted better reception of Li Bai's poems in a foreign context, but also injected powerful vitality into the Western literary world. This paper investigated Pound's translation practice of Li Bai's poems in Cathay and specifically interpreted Pound's internal and external motivations in the selection of source text, textual features formed through translation strategies and the reception of English translation of Li Bai's poems by drawing on three main concepts: "field", "capital", and "habitus" in Pierre Bourdieu's sociological theory. It was found that Pound's selection of Li Bai's poems was made under the influence of utilitarian American sinology field and flashy literary field. Pound's habitus with cosmopolitanism and historicism shaped by American sinology and literary fields initiated his translation idea of "translation as creation", which further formed his translation strategies. Finally, Pound, with great social, cultural, and symbolic capitals, promoted better reception of Cathay, especially Li Bai's poems. The findings of research revealed the powerful interpretation of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological theory in translation and communication of literary works, which provided great recommendations for Chinese researchers and policymakers on how to better translate and communicate Chinese literature abroad for international literary exchanges. The function of modality is to express the degree of the intrinsic and extrinsic assessment and judgement of a speaker or writer in terms of truth-value in propositions. One of the branches of translation studies is pure descriptive translation studies, which can be a product-oriented, function-oriented, or process-oriented. This study is product-oriented in that it examines descriptively an existing translation. This paper is a case study of Jacinto Benavente's drama, entitled "Los Intereses Creados". The study was done qualitatively and quantitatively to describe the relevance and translatability of modality markers from Spanish into English. The investigation was done in a hyponym of literary translation, drama. Both source text and target text were wholly read. The data related to modality were identified, collected, and analysed. The analyses were carried out, following Toolan's theory of modality. The analyses revealed that the English target text used more modality markers than the Spanish source text. The research revealed also that the frequency and infrequency of modality were more determined by language peculiarities and norms than by the translator; it indicates that the peculiarities and norms of both Spanish and English languages are the determinants of the translation procedures of modality.
