Abstract

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. Abstract

This paper investigated the synthesis of inorganic polymer composites for electromagnetic radiation absorption using potassium titanates. The selected polyamide 6 and potassium polytitanate materials contain TiО2, K2СО3, and KCl obtained by charge sintering. Results showed that modification of polyamide 6 with sintering products in the form of a fine powder of potassium polytitanate that contains different phases K2O × 2TiO2, K2O × 4TiO2, and K2O × 6TiO2 which increased their strength properties. With increased potassium titanates (PTT) synthesis, a gradual transition from di to potassium hexatitanates occurs K2O × 2TiO2 – K2O × 4TiO2 – K2O × 6TiO2. The optimal content of potassium polytitanate was over 20 % by mass. To fully ensure the reinforcing effect due to the filling of potassium polytitanate polyamide 6, it is necessary to use whiskers K2O × 6TiO2, which can be collected by the additional crystallization of the amorphous charge sintering product. By designing experimental-statistical mathematical models in equal regressions, mathematical optimization of inorganic polymer composites for electromagnetic radiation absorption using PTT was carried out.

Abstract

The study of spin effects in elastic proton–proton and antiproton–proton scattering in the SPASCHARM experiment at U-70 accelerator facility (Institute for High Energy Physics, National Research Centre Kurchatov Institute, Protvino, Moscow oblast) is discussed. Polarized beams or a polarized target of the experiment will be used to measure the analyzing power of elastic scattering of protons and antiprotons. The possibility of using two different types of the detectors to register recoil particles of elastic scattering of protons is analyzed. In the first case, it is proposed to use scintillation counters, the second option is a detector based on proportional chambers. A comparison of the registration efficiency of elastic scattering for two configurations of the experimental setup is carried out, and the required measurement time is determined. Abstract

First results on the polarization of hyperons inclusively produced on 26.5-GeV/c and beams are presented. The measurements were carried out using the SPASCHARM setup at the U-70 accelerator facility (Protvino, Russia) on nuclear targets in 2021 and 2022. The polarization of an hyperon on the beam does not exceed several percent in most of the studied kinematic region. The data obtained on the -meson beam exhibit a significant positive polarization at large values of the Feynman variable xF and transverse momentum pT measured for the first time on nuclei. Abstract

First results on -dependence measurements in inclusive meson production in interactions ( , Al, Cu, Sn, and W) are presented at GeV/c. The ratios of the differential cross sections of four of these nuclei to the differential cross section on aluminum were measured and the dependence of these cross sections on the atomic of the nucleus was studied. The measurements were carried out in the kinematic region of the Feynman variable and transverse momentum GeV/c. mesons were detected in the decay mode at the SPASCHARM experimental setup using negative charged beams at beamline 14 of the U-70 accelerator complex. Abstract

The operation and parameters of Bunch Shape Monitors using coherent transformation of time structure of an analyzed beam into a spatial one of low energy secondary electrons emitted from a wire target is influenced by the characteristics of a beam under study. The electromagnetic field of a bunch disturbs the trajectories of secondary electrons, thus resulting in a degradation of phase resolution and in errors of phase reading. Another effect is the perturbation of the target potential due to the current in the wire induced by a bunch as well as due to current compensating emission of the secondary electrons. Abstract

In this work the expanded models are studied for foaming apparatuses with gratings made of tubes for different diameters. The problem of intensification of foam devices using coarse-grating lattices is considered. The possibility of deep cleaning and practically complete cleaning of gases from ammonia and fluoride compounds with their separate absorption is noted. The series of experimental dependencies for the main parameters of the process are given. The possibility of effective mass-exchange processes in an intensive foam layer on counter-current coarse-grating lattices is confirmed. The controversial requirements for equipment have been given despite the large number of existing machines for mass transfer processes, as well as the development of new high-intensity and efficient equipment for environmental technologies in many industries is considered.
