Marija Gimbutienė paskelbė tris fundamentalias monografijas, kuriose nagrinėjo neolito laikotarpio Europos religiją ir Didžiąją Deivę, kuri, jos nuomone, karaliavo neolito Europos gyventojų sakralinėje erdvėje. Archeologė manė, kad šiuolaikinės Europos civilizacijos ištakos yra ankstyvosiose neolitinėse žemdirbių visuomenėse, kurios egzistavo nuo VII iki III tūkstm. pr. Kr., ir tai ji pavadino terminu "Senoji Europa". M. Gimbutienės manymu, Didžioji Triasmenė deivė yra sietina su "gimimo, auklėjimo, augimo, mirties ir atgimimo" ciklu ir ji atliko dominuojantį ir visa apimantį vaidmenį Senosios Europos religijoje - "deivės religijoje". Kukutenio-Tripolės kultūros tapybinės tradicijos analizė leidžia teigti, kad, be moteriškų personažų, tikriausiai deivių, ypač svarbi buvo Mėnulio simbolika, mėnulio ciklai ir sakraliniai vaizdiniai, susiję su Mėnulio semantiniu lauku. Maria Gimbutas devoted three fundamental monographs to the study of the religion of prehistoric Europe and the Goddess who, in her opinion, reigned in the sacred space of the population of Neolithic Europe. She believed that modern European civilization has its origins in the early agricultural societies of the Neolithic period from the 7th to the 3rd millennia BC, which corresponds to the term "Old Europe". According to the researcher, the Great Triune Goddess, associated with the cycle of "birth, nurturing, growth, death, and regeneration", played a dominant and all-encompassing role in the religion of Old Europe, the "goddess religion". The analysis of the pictorial tradition of the Cucuteni-Trypillia cultural complex allows us to assert that, in addition to female characters, probably goddesses, the symbolism of the Moon, lunar cycles and sacred images related to the semantic field of the Moon were of particular importance during near 2000 years. Vartant XX a. antrosios pusės JAV lietuvių spaudą susidaro įspūdis, kad Marija Gimbutienė ir jos veikla – tiek mokslinė, tiek visuomeninė – buvo atidžiai stebima ir vertinama išeivijos lietuvių. To meto JAV lietuvių spaudoje randame užfiksuotus visus svarbiausius dr. M. Gimbutienės profesinės karjeros ir akademinės veiklos įvykius: nuo straipsnių apie dalyvavimą konferencijose, išleistas knygas, paskaitas vietos lietuviams iki išsamių mokslininkės plačiašakės veiklos apžvalgų. Neliko nepastebėti ir jos apsilankymai sovietų Lietuvoje XX a. 7 dešimtmetyje ir vėliau. Būtent šios kelionės JAV lietuvių spaudoje sukėlė tikrą audrą, kurioje špagas viešai sukryžiavo Bronys Raila, „Dirvoje“ gynęs M. Gimbutienę, ir Juozas Kojelis, žurnale „Į laisvę“, dienraštyje „Draugas“ ir kitur ironiškai komentavęs ne tik mokslininkės „vaisingą bendradarbiavimą su tarybiniais etnografais“, bet ir pro didinamąjį stiklą žvelgęs į jos iniciatyva 1964 m. Kalifornijos universitete Los Andžele suorganizuotą Kristijono Donelaičio 250-ųjų gimimo metinių minėjimą, 1966–1967 m. tame pačiame universitete jos surengtą lietuvių liaudies meno parodą, nuo 7 dešimtmečio dėstomą lietuvių kalbos kursą. Pati M. Gimbutienė šioje beveik trejus metus užsitęsusioje „diskusijoje“ nedalyvavo. Reakcingesnių vietos lietuvių neretai vadinta „komuniste“, mokslininkė buvo viena pirmųjų, atvirai nedeklaravusių, bet savo veiksmais drąsiai rėmusių XX a. antrojoje pusėje liberaliosios JAV lietuvių visuomenės dalies, kuriai atstovavo 1957 m. įkurta „Santaros-Šviesos“ federacija, žurnalas „Metmenys“ ir mėnraštis „Akiračiai“, propaguotą laikyseną „veidu į Lietuvą“. The American-Lithuanian press of the second half of the 20th century closely observed and discussed Marija Gimbutienė’s works and activities. It recorded almost all most important events in Dr. Gimbutienė’s professional career and academic life, from books she wrote, conferences she attended and lectures she delivered to detailed reviews of her extensive activities. Gimbutienė’s visits to Soviet Lithuania in the 1960s and beyond were also noticed. Her visits to the USSR caused a real storm in the American-Lithuanian press, where two main protagonists, Bronys Raila and Juozas Kojelis, fought on the opposite sides. Raila publicly defended Gimbutienė in newspaper “Dirva,” whereas Kojelis commented ironically on Gimbutienė’s “prolific cooperation with Soviet ethnographers” in the journal “Į laisvę” and elsewhere. The latter looked through a magnifying glass at the commemoration of the bicentenary of the death of Kristijonas Donelaitis, which Gimbutienė initiated in 1964, at the exhibition of Lithuanian folk art organized by her at the UCLA in 1966–1967, and at the Lithuanian language course she taught at the UCLA from the 1960s onwards. She herself did not take part in the “discussion,” which lasted for almost three years. Gimbutienė, often called a “communist” by the more reactive local Lithuanians, was among the first American-Lithuanians, who did not simply declare but showed her support for the program, which slogan at the time was “veidu į Lietuvą” [facing Lithuania]. Šiame straipsnyje siekiama išanalizuoti archyvinių ir skelbtų šaltinių duomenis apie archeologo, etnografo, tautosakininko, bibliografo profesoriaus Eduardo Volterio (1856–1941) indėlį į Aukštųjų kursų ir Lietuvos universiteto humanitarinių disciplinų studijų kultūrinio kryptingumo organizavimą jų steigties metais ir jo požiūrį į Lietuvos visuomenės ugdymą, išnagrinėti jo pastangas plėtoti universiteto bendruomenės tarptautinius kultūrinius ryšius. Straipsnyje pateikta informacija byloja, kad E. Volteris buvo iš tų Lietuvos universiteto profesorių, kurie stengėsi praplėsti akademinę raišką už jos institucinių ribų, tiesiogiai dalyvavo organizacinėje veikloje. Tarpukario nepriklausomos Lietuvos mokslininkų visuomeninio veikimo istorinė patirtis yra vertinga siekiant geriau suvokti humanitarikos ugdomąją ir visuomenės istorinės kultūros išsaugojimo paskirtį, tai aktualu šių dienų sparčiai kintančioje globalių pokyčių aplinkoje. The aim of the article is to analyse and evaluate the contribution of Professor Eduardas Volteris (1856–1941), an archaeologist, ethnographer, folklore writer, and bibliographer, in the development of cultural relations and cultural expression of the Lithuanian academic intelligentsia in independent Lithuania. The sources analysed in the article evidence the significance of Eduardas Volteris’s organisational and research work in the process of the establishment of higher education in independent Lithuania between 1920 and 1922. His ambition to prioritise the humanities in higher education in Lithuania, his initiative to promote academic relations of the evolving academic community, and his wish to support the cultural transnationalism greatly benefited the development of the cultural perspective in independent Lithuania. Eduardas Volteris sought that the studies of general global humanities at the newly-established Lithuanian University be linked with the nurturing of Lithuanian cultural heritage and its dissemination. It was thanks to the implementation of these attitudes voiced by Eduardas Volteris and other intellectuals that the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Lithuania became an important basis for the development of cultural identity in the society. Prof. Volteris attempted to involve the professors and students of Kaunas in heritage studies and public cultural life. Volteris’s experience in and contribution to the organisation of academic and cultural cooperation was extensive. The professor encouraged the establishment and activities of the Lithuanian-Latvian Unity Society, a cultural relations organisation. Although the organisation was not numerous, its activities helped to expand the cultural contacts of the academic community not only in the Baltic region; it also took part in international intellectual and cultural organisations and facilitated the dissemination of different cultures in Lithuania. Eduardas Volteris was interested not only in the culture of the city, the land, and the people, in the names of the mounds, the local language. His cultural research was also linked to the cultural policy of the modern state, the ambition to understand the characteristics of modernity through the people’s attitudes and culture. Volteris can be attributed to the elite of the creators of collective historical and cultural memory in the edification of the Lithuanian public. The participation of the academic intelligentsia in the development of the historical self-awareness of the society was crucial has been throughout the years of existence of independent Lithuania. The impact of scholars in the field of mass cultural expression has become particularly relevant in the current context of new geopolitical tensions, Russia’s growing imperial ideology, and its policy of direct aggression, which is based on its own constructed narrative of history. In this contemporary context, Eduardas Volteris’s aspirations and the work he started in modernising Lithuania between the two world wars remain a source of valuable experience.

Šio straipsnio tikslas – menotyriniu požiūriu išanalizuoti ir įvertinti grafo Konstantino Tyzenhauzo (1786–1853) dailės palikimą įvairiapusės jo veiklos ir tuometinio laikmečio kontekste. Grafo kūryba – įdomus ir dėmesio vertas palikimas, mėgėjiškos aristokratijos kūrybos liudijimas. Įvairiuose leidiniuose publikuoti ar minimi pavieniai K. Tyzenhauzo kūriniai, tačiau kaip į visumą iš menotyrinės perspektyvos į juos dar nebandyta pažvelgti, dalis darbų dar nepublikuota. Analizė atskleidžia, kad K. Tyzenhauzo negausiai išlikusių piešinių ir akvarelių grupę sudaro gan skirtingos stilistikos, meninio lygmens darbų pavyzdžiai, atskleidžiantys grafo meninius eksperimentus: dalyje darbų ryški mokytojų A. Orlovskio, J. P. Norblino įtaka. Kaip brandžiausia grupė išskiriami romantizmo tendencijas atsispindintys darbai, kuriuose fiksuoti istorinio paveldo objektai (Kuoknesės, Vilniaus Gedimino, Trakų pilys), tačiau originaliausią grupę, kurioje ryškiausiai atsispindi K. Tyzenhauzo braižas ir originalumas, sudaro Rokiškio ir apylinkių fiksuoti vaizdai, paukščių piešiniai. Tai romantizuoti, autentiški vizualiniai savojo laikmečio ir savosios aplinkos fragmentai. Dailė grafui, kaip ir daugeliui kitų to meto didikų, niekada nebuvo pagrindinė, profesionali veikla, tačiau jis buvo gana gabus, šis gebėjimas pasitarnavo ir jo moksliniams tikslams. K. Tyzenhauzo darbai, kuriuose užfiksuoti paukščiai, įvairūs architektūriniai objektai, taip pat turi mokslinę, istorinę ir ikonografinę vertę. The goal of this article is to analyse and evaluate from an art-historical perspective the artistic legacy of Count Konstanty Tyzenhauz (1786–1853) in view of his multifaceted activities and in the context of his time, by applying formal and iconographic methods of art criticism. The Count’s work is a captivating and noteworthy legacy, a testimony to the amateur creativity of aristocracy. Various publications have published or mentioned only single works by Tyzenhauz; no attempt, however, has been made to study them as a whole with regard to the art-historical approach, moreover, some of the works had not yet been published. The analysis revealed that a number of sparsely preserved works, be it drawings or watercolours, are at variance with the stylistic rendering and artistic expression, thus disclosing the Count’s creative experiments and a notable influence of his teachers Orłowski and Norblin. The views representing historical heritage objects (the Koknese, the Vilnius Gediminas, and the Trakai castles) reflect in the main the Romantic tendencies and constitute the group of the most mature Count’s artworks. However, taking account of his unique style and individual manner, images of Rokiškis and the surrounding areas, as well as drawings of birds, stand out for the distinctive interpretation and comprise the most original group. They are romanticised, authentic visual fragments of his time and familiar environment. Art was not the Count’s main and professional endeavour, likewise for a number of noblemen of the epoch, but his artistic inclination let him adapt his talent for scientific purposes. No doubt, Tyzenhauz’s works that feature birds and various architectural objects are of important scientific, historical and iconographic value. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Gintaro Aleknonio naujosios cenzūros koncepcija. Aptariamas mokslininko požiūris į naujosios cenzūros veikimo mechanizmus, ištakas ir jos įveikos galimybes. Taip pat kritiškai analizuojamos šį požiūrį grindžiančios teorinės prielaidos. Ypač didelės abejonės reiškiamos dėl trijų prielaidų: pirma, kad rengdami ir skleisdami informaciją, žurnalistai nesivadovauja kokybiniais turinio atrankos kriterijais; antra, kad informacijos vartotojai yra pasyvūs ir visiškai kontroliuojami žiniasklaidos; trečia, kad to, kas įvardijama naująja cenzūra, neįmanoma pašalinti pasitelkus finansinius sprendimus. Straipsnyje ginčijama ir visą Aleknonio koncepciją funduojanti prielaida, jog Nepriklausomybės laikotarpiu žiniasklaida iš informacijos laisvės saugotojos virto cenzūros instancija. The article is on a Lithuanian communication scientist Gintaras Aleknonis‘s conception of New Censorship. It looks into the scientist‘s approach towards New Censorship‘s mechanisms of functioning, origins and possibilities to overcome it. The underlying theoretical presuppositions of this approach are examined critically too. It is argued that three presuppositions are particularly questionable. The first states that journalists do not follow qualitative criteria of content selection while compiling and disseminating information. The second is related to characterization of information users as passive and controlled by media. The third assumption states that the so called New Censorship cannot be eliminated by financial means. The article also disputes the assumption grounding the whole conception of New Censorship that the media has become a censorship instance instead of a custodian of freedom of information during the period of Lithuanian Independence.

Here we publish a report by Mykolas Drunga on five globally recognized scholars closely associated with VMU. They are the archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, the linguist Alfred Senn, the historian Alfred Erich Senn, the semanticist Algirdas Julius Greimas, and the computer scientist Algirdas Avižienis, all whom made a substantial intellectual impact on their discipline, often changing the direction of a whole field of study. Straipsnyje aptariama trijų Apšvietos epochos redaktorių – Martyno Počobuto-Odlianickio, Józefo Epifanio Minasowicziaus ir Franciszeko Bohomolco – leidybinė veikla. Nors jie buvo skirtingos kilmės, skyrėsi ir vėliau jų įgytas išsilavinimas ir profesinė veikla (Počobutas-Odlianickis buvo Vilniaus akademijos astronomas ir rektorius, Minasowiczius – visų pirma rašytojas ir redaktorius, o Bohomolecas – pedagogas), juos sieja bendras bruožas, kuris, autorės teigimu, prisidėjo prie šio redakcinio kruopštumo: visi trys studijavo jėzuitų kolegijose, kurių mokymo programose daug dėmesio buvo skiriamas humanitariniams mokslams. Tyrimas paremtas pasirinktais minėtų redaktorių publikuotais leidiniais: Počobuto-Odlianickio "Pamiątka stoletnia zwycięstwa pod Wiedniem przez Jana III Króla polskiego nad Turkami otrzymanego roku 1683 z woli prześwietnej Komissyi Edukacyi Narodowej przez Szkołę Główną w. Šiuos leidinius kaip atspindinčius minėtų autorių leidybinę veiklą autorė pasirinko atsižvelgdama į jų skirtingą pobūdį: tekstų, taip pat kitų autorių, gausybę ir įvairovę, redakcinius paaiškinimus ir jiems būdingą taisyklingą kalbą. Šaltinių analizė leido išskirti bendrus leidinių bruožus ir padaryti prielaidą, kad būtent jėzuitų kolegijose įgytas išsilavinimas formavo bendrą minėtų leidėjų leidybinį tikslumumą ir kruopštumą. The research concerns the publishing activity of three editors of the Age of Enlightenment: Marcin Poczobut-Odlanicki, Józef Epifani Minasowicz, and Franciszek Bohomolec. All three of them were very diligent, thorough, philologicly-aware, and attentive not only to the language of their works, but also to their moral tenor. Despite differences in background, education and main profession (PoczobutOdlanicki was a renowned astronomer and a rector of the Principal School of Lithuania (later, Vilnius Academy); Minasowicz was mainly a writer and an editor (of Monitor, among other titles), and Bohomolec was a pedagogue and also a writer), all three possessed a common trait which, according to the author, contributed to their publishing diligence: they were educated in Jesuit colleges where much emphasis was put on the humanities, and students were taught both in Latin and in Polish. The research is based on selected publications they had edited: Pamiątka stoletnia zwycięstwa pod Wiedniem przez Jana III Króla polskiego nad Turkami otrzymanego roku 1683/ z woli prześwietnej Komissyi Edukacyi Narodowej przez Szkołę Główną w X. Lit. Uroczyście ochodzonej dnia 11. I 12. Października roku 1783 (A commemorative centenary of the victory at Vienna by Jan III, King of Poland, over the Turks achieved in 1683/ solemnly celebrated by the Principal School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania on 11 and 12 October 1783 by the will of the illustrious Commission of National Education ) edited by Poczobut-Odlanicki, Zbiór mniejszy poezji polskich drobniejszych (A Small Collection of Minor Polish Poetry) edited by J.E. Minasowicz, and Zabawki oratorskie (Oratorical Games) edited by Franciszek Bohomolec. The author chose these books as representative of the publishing activity of the above-mentioned editors and because of their diverse nature: they contain many different texts, also by other authors, editorial comments, and are coloured by the linguistic correctness characteristic of the three editors. An analysis of these sources made it possible to distinguish common characteristics of these publications and to make the assumption that it was the education at Jesuit colleges that had shaped the publishing thoroughness and diligence shared by all three editors.

Straipsnyje pristatomi Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekoje vykdomi darbai, skirti Martyno Počobuto-Odlianickio (1728–1810) epistoliniam palikimui aprašyti ir pristatyti elektroninėje erdvėje. Siekiant šio tikslo, įkvėpimo semtasi iš sėkmingų Europos bibliotekų ir tyrėjų įgyvendintų projektu, susijusių su vadinamosios „Laiškų respublikos“ (Republic of Letters) atkūrimu pasitelkiant skaitmenines technologijas. Vilniuje saugomi laiškai istorijos aplinkybių paveikti liko išblaškyti ne tik po skirtingus archyvus, bet ir skirtingose atminties institucijose. Naujai aprašant laiškus, iš kurių dauguma buvo adresuota Počobutui, vadovautasi semantiniais ir chronologiniais ryšiais, o ne istoriškai susiklosčiusiais fondais, todėl gretinant laiškus pavyko suvokti kai kuriuos anksčiau mažai suprantamus dalykus, susieti ir tokiu būdu identifikuoti anksčiau neatributuotus laiškus. Naujai aprašant laiškus planuojama greta detalių aprašymų pateikti skenuotus laiškų vaizdus (dalis minimų laiškų jau pateikta VUB tinklapyje, Skaitmeninių kolekcijų skyriuje). Darbo metu autorė paskelbė du straipsnius, kuriuose gvildenta šių laiškų lingvistinė ir istorinė reikšmė. Straipsnio priede pateiktoje lentelėje surašytos šiandien žinomos minėtų laiškų tekstų publikacijos įrodo, kad ši medžiaga domina istorikus, laiškuose pateikta informacija yra vertinga. Drawing inspiration from modern digital humanities research, and especially several projects related to recreating the ‘Republic of Letters’, Vilnius University Library intends to apply similar methods to the collection of letters of Marcin Poczobut (1728–1810). This article presents the process of describing, digitising, and creating a dedicated database of his letters. The initial stage of the work consists of creating descriptions of the letters. Next, the database should be made, including scanned images of the manuscripts and detailed search possibilities. It should provide better access to the manuscripts and enhance their search possibilities. On inspecting the material, we made some discoveries, attributed several letters and explored the multilingual phenomena of some of the texts, etc. The research carried out within the framework of the project will be useful for further studies in the field.

Martynas Počobutas-Odlianickis pasižymėjo profesinių veiklų įvairove. Jis buvo ne tik žinomas astronomas, matematikas, teologas, švietimo reformatorius, redaktorius, leidėjas, rektorius, bet ir poetas. Deja, ši Vilniaus jėzuito kūrybinė veikla nesulaukė tinkamo mokslininkų susidomėjimo, greičiausiai dėl to, kad jo poezija nebuvo aukšto meninio lygio. Tą patį galima pasakyti apie du proginius eilėraščius caro Aleksandro I garbei, parašytus paskutinį jo gyvenimo dešimtmetį, tačiau neabejotina, kad šiandien jie turi unikalią tos epochos dokumento vertę ir atspindi visuomenės nuotaikas, vyravusias Lietuvoje XIX a. pradžioje. Apsišvietęs Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės Vyriausiosios mokyklos rektorius labai tikėjosi iš naujojo Rusijos caro paramos jo vadovaujamos institucijos veiklai. Šiame straipsnyje taip pat bandoma pristatyti Počobuto panegirinius eilėraščius kitų to meto panašių tekstų, parašytų caro Aleksandro I garbei, kontekste. Marcin Poczobut-Odlanicki had a wide range of professional activities. He was not only a renowned astronomer, mathematician, theologian, educational reformer, editor, publisher, and rector, but also a poet. Unfortunately, the latter occupation of the Jesuit from Vilnius has not attracted scholars’ attention, probably because his poetry was not of a high artistic standard. The same can be said of the two occasional poems in honour of Tsar Alexander I. Although Poczobut wrote them in the last decade of his life, there is no doubt that today they have a unique value as a document of that epoch and reflect the public mood in Lithuania at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The educated rector of the Principal School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had high hopes for the new Russian tsar’s support for the activities of the institution under his leadership. This article also attempts to place Poczobut’s panegyric poems in the context of other texts of this type written in honour of Alexander I at that time.

Martynas Počobutas, Vilniaus akademijos rektorius, ir poetas Franciszekas Karpińskis 1787–1799 m. apsikeitė bent keliais laiškais. Susirašinėjimą papildydavo poezijos kūriniai, kuriuos rašė ir poetas mėgėjas Počobutas, ir visuotinai pripažintas bei gerbiamas poetas Karpińskis. Šiame susirašinėjime galima įžvelgti faktų iš abiejų autorių biografijų. Karpińskis kaip tik tuo metu apsigyveno Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės teritorijoje, nuomojo naujus kaimus ir įsigijo nuosavą kaimą, įgijo naujų pažinčių ir draugų. Počobutui tai suteikė galimybę pažinti poetą, įtraukti jį į Vilniaus akademijos darbuotojų ratą, užmegzti draugystę ir sužinoti poeto nuomonę apie savo paties literatūros kūrinius. Nepaisant kelių bandymų, jiems nepavyko užmegzti glaudesnio bendradarbiavimo ir šiandien apie jų kontaktus liudija tik laiškai. Marcin Poczobut, the rector of Vilnius Academy, and the poet Franciszek Karpiński exchanged at least a few letters between 1787 and 1799. Their correspondence was accompanied by poetry written by Poczobut, who was an amateur poet, and by Karpiński, a poet well known and respected. The biographies of both authors are discernible in the background of their correspondence. Karpiński had just settled in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and, after leasing several villages, bought one of his own; he gained new acquaintances and friends. For Poczobut, it was an opportunity to come to know the poet, to engage him into the circle of the staff of Vilnius Academy, to establish a friendship and learn the poet’s opinion on his own literary works. Despite several attempts, they failed to establish closer cooperation, and only these letters remain as an evidence of their contacts.

Tiriami archyvinių ir skelbtų šaltinių duomenys apie Lietuvos universitete formuojamą demokratišką sociokultūrinę aplinką, nagrinėjamas mokslo asmenybių kultūrinio liberalizmo idėjų poveikis organizuojant Kauno gyventojų švietimą ir kultūrinį ugdymą. The aim of the article is to study the impact of the ideas of modern liberalism put forward by the scholars and lecturers of the University of Lithuania, which was established in Kaunas in 1922, in developing the educational voice of the intelligentsia in the society. The study looks into archival and other published sources on the democratic sociocultural environment set up at the University of Lithuania, analyses the impact of the ideas of cultural liberalism expressed by scholars in organising the training and cultural education of the population. The article uses the documents related to the pedagogical and cultural performance of the university operating in Kaunas, personal collections, minutes of meetings of organisations established by intellectuals, official letters and other correspondence, and periodicals. The sources employed in this work tell about the significant organisational and scientific contribution of researchers not only to organising the studies in Kaunas but also to mobilising a qualified, socially active, and democratic academic community. The contribution of the university professors from different fields of science and their value-based approach were of great importance in the development of the sociocultural life of the university. Vaclovas Biržiška, Petras Leonas, Albinas Rimka, and other intellectuals based their theoretical ideas and public actions on democracy, social solidarity, tolerance, other principles of social progress, and the recognition of the value and rights of every person. The ideas of democracy, the development of an educated personality and a modern society were the spiritual basis of many intellectuals’ educational activities in society right from the founding of the University of Lithuania, even though only some of them consistently favoured the doctrines of modern liberalism. Professors from Kaunas University sought to apply scientific knowledge and disseminate their experience by organizing direct training for adults at different levels of education and from different social strata. They established public adult education institutions. The scholars of Kaunas did not limit themselves to the education of the residents of their city, promotion of their educational interests, and development of their cultural horizons. Together with other intellectuals, authors of literary and artistic works, publicists and educators who promoted democratic position, they took part in the work of the Lithuanian Cultural Union, which had been functioning since 1924. This union brought together several dozens of public organisations and companies and cooperated with publishers of liberal cultural magazines.

Straipsnyje keliama mintis, kad dr. Jono Basanavičiaus sukurtą ir visą gyvenimą plėtotą lietuvių kilmės iš senovės trakų teoriją (hipotezę) galima traktuoti kaip mitinį lietuvių kilmės vaizdinį, kurio esminis tikslas buvo idealizuoti naujam laisvam valstybiniam gyvenimui besikeliančią tautą. Šiuo atveju svarbu, kad trakų idėjos pirmavaizdžiai atsispindi J. Basanavičiaus paliudytoje prigimtinėje patirtyje. Senovės trakus jis retrospektyviai pamini jau aprašydamas ir savo vaikystę. Taigi, šiame straipsnyje taip pat formuluojama prielaida, kad trakologija nuo J. Basanavičiaus jaunystės tampa reikšminga jo gyvenimo dalimi. J. Basanavičiui apsigyvenus Bulgarijoje ir ypač pradėjus leisti Aušrą (1883–1886) lietuvių kilmės iš senovės trakų hipotezė tapo svarbiausia jo moksline ir kartu gyvenimo idėja bei reikšmingu jo kultūrinės tapatybės sandu, turėjusiu didelę įtaką visam jo gyvenimui. Keldamas šią hipotezę J. Basanavičius atsiskleidžia kaip asmenybė, kurioje susilieja mokslininkas-antropologas, mitinio tautos kilmės vaizdinio kūrėjas ir žmogus, per šią teoriją tarsi kūręs savo asmeninę kultūrinę tapatybę. The theory (hypothesis) tracing Lithuanian origins from the ancient Thracians is perhaps the most romantical and most ideologically engaged part of the scholarly legacy by doctor Jonas Basanavičius (1851–1927). Shaped already in the period of publishing “Aušra” (1883– 1886), this theory was developed in the course of his entire life and could be regarded as the greatest reflection of Basanavičius’ romantical worldview and thinking. Having successfully performed important functions of fostering the Lithuanian national identity, awakening the national consciousness and national pride, and enhancing the national communication in the last decades of the 19th century, the “Thracology” – reasonably criticized already in the interwar period – is currently just a historiographic fact from the perspective of the modern science. Although being able to grasp certain tendencies, Basanavičius did err considerably in some of his interpretations. However, his “Thracology” was not just a scholarly study. While creating and developing his Thracian theory of Lithuanian origin, Basanavičius followed the mythological ideology tradition of the first half of the 19th century, in which the historical narrative used to start with a story of origins (according to Gintaras Beresnevičius, researcher in Lithuanian mythology). His Thracian hypothesis should be regarded as a mythical image of Lithuanian origin, which essential purpose was idealization of a nation that started a new free political life. In this context, culture and especially its continuity from the past to the present and future emerges as the main ideological value of “Thracology”. It enables appreciating people from the past and their unique culture as important participants of the national present and future. This theory supports the idea of Lithuanian adherence to the European culture. The Thracian theory is not just a scholarly study because Basanavičius viewed cultural history not only as a science that objectively examined historical facts, but also as an inherent part of the human life that could aid self-understanding and personal growth. Therefore, it is important to note that the world of ideas is clearly recognizable in the Basanavičius’ texts along with the scholarly and sensual worlds. The original forms of the Thracian theory are reflected in the earliest experiences as testified by its author. Basanavičius retrospectively mentioned Thracians already while recounting his childhood. Thus, the article supports an assumption that “Thracology” used to be an important part of Basanavičius’ life since his youth – starting from his studies at the Moscow University. After Basanavičius settled in Bulgaria, and particularly from the period of publishing “Aušra”, the Thracian hypothesis of the Lithuanian origin should be considered as the main idea of his studies and life; it strongly affected him for the rest of his life and comprised an important part of his cultural identity. In terms of this hypothesis, Basanavičius stands out as a person that merges a researcher in anthropology and creating of his own cultural identity.

Algirdas Julius Greimas – Prancūzijoje žinomas semiotikas, o lietuviams ne mažiau svarbus ir kaip aktyvus Lietuvos rezistencijos Vakaruose dalyvis. Antrojo pasaulinio karo pabaigoje pasitraukęs iš Lietuvos į Prancūziją, A. J. Greimas įsiliejo į Paryžiaus mokslo bendruomenę ir laipsniškai tapo gerbiamu semiotiku. Prancūzijos žiniasklaidoje jo, kaip mokslininko, vardas skamba diskusijose tarp intelektualų ir apie intelektualus. 1985 m. Lietuvoje prasidėjus perestroikai (politinėms ir ekonominėms reformoms), A. J. Greimas atvirai kalbėjo apie savo lietuviškas šaknis ir netiesiogiai palaikė Lietuvos žmonių nepriklausomybės siekį. Tikėtina, kad semiotikas sąmoningai naudojosi savo kaip mokslininko reputacija ir ryšiais, kurie jam suteikė galimybių viešai pasisakyti ne tik mokslo, bet ir nepriklausomos Lietuvos klausimais. Algirdas Julien Greimas – a renowned semiologist in France and a figure of the Lithuanian resistance. A double life and a character little known in its entirety. As soon as he arrived in France at the end of the Second World War, Greimas entered the academic world where he gradually became one of the most famous semiologists. This is reflected in the French media where his name is part of the discussions on and by intellectuals. In 1985, when the period of perestroika began, Greimas gave several interviews in which he spoke about his Lithuanian origins, indirectly inviting people to support the independence of his country. He openly expressed his position on Lithuanian freedom, but not as a nobody, but as a French academician with an impeccable reputation that he had built up over the years. Until his death, when he could no longer control his image, it is very likely that Greimas consciously used his knowledge of communication and notoriety to support the Lithuanian resistance through his media interventions.

Straipsnis skirtas astronomo, mokslininko, Vilniaus akademijos rektoriaus ir reformatoriaus, kunigo Martyno Počobuto-Odlianickio ir vieno svarbiausių kultūrinio gyvenimo veikėjų Stanislavo Augusto Poniatovskio valdymo laikais – vyskupo Adomo Naruševičiaus susirašinėjimui aptarti. Počobutas kreipėsi į Naruševičių, su kuriuo nuo jėzuitų laikų jį siejo draugystės ryšiai, prašydamas paramos savo mokslinių tyrimų iniciatyvoms. Be to, jis pristatė labai įdomius ir svarbius planus įsteigti Mokslo draugiją, kurios tikslas buvo skleisti žinias. Išsaugoti laiškai leidžia pamatyti Vilniaus astronomą kaip plataus akiračio žmogų, įdomų tyrinėtoją ir gerą mokslinio darbo organizatorių. Susirašinėjimas taip pat liudija apie draugiškus Naruševičiaus ir Počobuto santykius. The article presents the correspondence between Marcin Poczobut-Odlanicki, rector of Vilnius Academy, a Catholic priest, astronomer, scholar, and reformer, and Adam Naruszewicz, a poet and one of the most significant figures of the cultural life in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under the reign of King Stanisław August Poniatowski. Poczobut approached Naruszevicz, with whom he had been friends since his Jesuit days, to ask for support for his research initiatives. He presented very interesting and important plans of establishing the Scientific Society, the main goal of which would be the dissemination of knowledge. The preserved letters show the astronomer of Vilnius as a broad-minded person, a curious scholar, and a capable organiser of research. The correspondence also reveals the bonds of friendship between Naruszewicz and Poczobut. This epistolary legacy and its discussion enrich our knowledge of the culture of the Age of Enlightenment in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Tyrimas apima žymaus Abiejų Tautų Respublikos astronomo, Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės vyriausiosios mokyklos (nuo 1797 metų – Vilniaus vyriausioji mokykla) rektoriaus, matematikos ir astronomijos profesoriaus Martyno Počobuto-Odlianickio mokslinius ryšius su Vakarų Europos mokslo draugijomis, akademijomis ir mokslo žmonėmis XVIII a. antroje pusėje. Remiantis Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekos Rankraščių skyriuje saugomais šaltiniais – Počobuto korespondencija su vakarų Europos mokslininkais – analizuojami mokslo ryšiai ir jų plėtotė, raiškos būdai, nagrinėjama mokslo idėjų cirkuliacija ir jos nauda ne tik mokslininkui, bet ir aplinkai, kurioje formavosi jo mokslinės pažiūros, buvo vykdomi tyrinėjimai. Pažymėtina, kad Počobuto korespondencija yra itin gausi – ją sudaro keli tūkstančiai laiškų įvairiems asmenims, todėl šis straipsnis yra pirmas, nedidelis bandymas nežymiai apčiuopti tokios korespondencijos svarbą keliais aspektais: kaip naudą konkrečiam asmeniui (jo vardo ir mokslo populiarinimui) ir jo atstovaujamos institucijos ir net šalies garsinimui – juk Počobutas buvo karališkasis astronomas, vienintelis mokslininkas, priimtas į Paryžiaus mokslų akademijos narių gretas, kaip narys korespondentas, visos Abiejų Tautų Respublikos atstovas. The research covers scholarly relations of Marcin Poczobut-Odlanicki, the famous astronomer of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the head of the Principal School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (from 1797 – Vilnius Principal School), and a professor of mathematics and astronomy. Based on the sources stored in the Manuscript Department of the Vilnius University Library – Poczobut’s correspondence with Western European scientists – analysis of academic relations and their development, ways of expression, scientific ideas and their benefits both to the scientist and the environment where his scientific views were formed was carried out. It should be noted that Poczobut’s correspondence is very rich: it consists of several thousand letters to various persons. This article is the first attempt to grasp the importance of such correspondence in several aspects: as a benefit to a particular person (popularisation of his name and his branch of science), to the institution he represents, and even to the glory of the country: after all, Poczobut was not an ordinary scientist but a royal astronomer and the only scientist of the whole Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth admitted to the ranks of the members of the Paris Academy of Sciences as a corresponding member. In addition, the article considers the dissemination of scientific ideas (interest in the newly discovered constellation, publications on observations in the scientific press (journals, atlases, and encyclopaedias), and the earliest processes of modernization of the academic milieu of Vilnius in the general context of the world of science. In current Lithuanian and Polish historiography, research into the activities of scientific societies mainly covered the late nineteenth–the early twentieth century, but participation of the research environment of Vilnius University and its predecessors in foreign scientific societies of the earlier period has not been studied. The analysis of the scientific relations and development of science in the academic community of Vilnius shows the importance of the activities of scientific societies and their contribution to science not in the local but in the overall context of the world of science.

Straipsnyje pristatoma eksjėzuito Remigijaus Kosakovskio (1730–1780) veikla, kurią jis aprašo savo laiškuose Vilniaus astronomijos observatorijos vedėjui Vilniaus akademijos profesoriui Martynui Počobutui-Odlianickiui (1728–1810); laiškai rašyti daugiausia 1778 m. Kosakovskis, bendraudamas su Paryžiaus mokslininkais, Prancūzijos karališkosios akademijos nariais (membre correspondent de l’Académie des Sciences), dėjo pastangas, kad Martynas Počobutas būtų priimtas į Prancūzijos karališkosios akademijos narius korespondentus. Savo veiksmus ir padėtį prieš rinkimus Kosakovskis gana nuodugniai išdėstė būtent Počobutui skirtuose laiškuose. Jis pateikė ne tik savo pastangų apžvalgas, bet ir daugybę pastabų bei apmąstymų apie ano meto Paryžiaus mokslininkų bendruomenę ir apie Prancūzijoje leidžiamas publikacijas bei jų autorius. Kosakovskio susirašinėjime su Počobutu atskleidžiami ir eksjėzuito nuopelnai propaguojant Počobuto mokslo pasiekimus akademinėje aplinkoje ir Vilniaus astronomijos observatorijos veikloje. Be kita ko, Kosakovskis parengė apie Počobuto astronominių stebėjimų „memorialą“ ir išplatino jį tarp akademikų, lankydamas juos prieš rinkimus, pristatydamas Počobuto atliktų tyrimų rezultatus, surengdamas Prancūzijos mokslų akademijos nariams rinktinius pietus. Jis prisidėjo prie to, kad 1778 m. rugpjūtį išspausdintame Prancūzijos žurnale "Journal des Sçavants" buvo paskelbtas straipsnis apie karališkąjį žvaigždyną „Taurus Poniatovii“. Kosakovskio korespondencijoje gausu pastebėjimų ir pamąstymų apie Paryžiaus papročius, įžymių Apšvietos epochos rašytojų, tokių kaip Volteras ir Jean-Jacquess Rousseau, kritikos. Ši korespondencija taip pat liudija apie Vilniaus ir Paryžiaus keitimąsi Apšvietos epochos mokslo idėjomis ir Vilniaus akademinės bendruomenės gyvą ryšį su Prancūzijos mokslo bendruomene. Kosakovskio laiškai atskleidžia autorių ne tik kaip aktyvų Vilniaus observatorijos ir jos vedėjo mokslo veiklos populiarintoją, bet ir kaip talentingą pasakotoją, pasižymintį išskirtiniais retoriniais gebėjimais. This article concerns the activities of the ex-Jesuit Remigiusz Kossakowski (1730–1780) in the light of his correspondence, mainly in 1778, with Marcin Poczobut-Odlanicki (1728–1810), the administrator of the Vilnius Astronomical Observatory and a professor at Vilnius Academy. Kossakowski conducted a series of procedures aimed at electing Poczobut to the Academy’s corresponding members in the environment of Parisian scholars, members of the French Royal Academy of Sciences (membre correspondent de l’Académie des Sciences). He described his actions and the situation before the election in great detail in his letters to Poczobut. Not only did Kossakowski report on his efforts, but he also published numerous comments and reflections on the scientific community in Paris of that time, on the publications published in France, and their authors. Kossakowski’s correspondence with Poczobut also sheds light on his merits in promoting Poczobut’s scientific achievements in the academic community and in the activities of Vilnius Astronomical Observatory. Among other things, Kossakowski prepared a ‘memorial’ on Poczobut’s astronomical observations and disseminated it among the academicians; he welcomed scholars with a sumptuous dinner, visited academicians before the election, and presented the results of studies conducted by Poczobut. In August 1778, he contributed to the publication of an article about the royal constellation Taurus Poniatovii in the French journal Journal des Sçavants. Kossakowski’s correspondence contains many observations and reflections on Parisian customs, as well as criticism of the outstanding writers of the era, such as Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It also testifies to the exchange of scientific ideas between Vilnius and Paris in the era of the Enlightenment, the fact that the academic community of Vilnius had a lively contact with the French scientific community. In addition, Kossakowski’s letters reveal the author not only as an active participant in the activities for the benefit of the Vilnius Observatory and its administrator but also as a talented narrator with an outstanding rhetorical talent.

Kai tik Edukacinė komisija pradėjo rūpintis švietimo reikalais, atitinkama kilmingųjų švietime dominavusi išskirtinių, mokamų kolegijų misija buvo apribota. Komisija įsteigė neturtingiems bajorams skirtus konviktus – institucijas, ypač svarbias Abiejų Tautų Respublikos švietimo demokratizavimui. Tokio tipo įstaigos lėmė, kad būsimai profesijai būtinų žinių įgijimas neturėjo būti siejamas su didiko mokinio tarnautojo ar studento funkcijos atlikimu. Smulkių, neturtingų bajorų išsilavinimas turėtų padaryti juos nepriklausomus nuo turtingesnių visuomenės atstovų, taip pat buvo siekiama parengti juos šaliai reikalingoms mokytojo, tarnautojo ar kario profesijoms. Vilniaus Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės vyriausiosios mokyklos „Didysis konviktas“, globojamas rektoriaus Martyno Počobuto, buvo didžiausias Komisijos finansuojamas konviktas. Jis turėjo „36.700 zlotų metinių pajamų iš Edukacinių fondų“, o šioje institucijoje „dėl didžiulio spaudimo beveik visada buvo išlaikomas 70 konviktorių su dešimčia direktorių skaičius“. Neturtingi bajorų jaunuoliai Komisijos sąskaita buvo rengiami vykdyti Abiejų Tautų Respublikos piliečio misiją, o laiškai su prašymais įkurdinti konvikte rodo aukštus neturtingų bajorų edukacinius siekius. From the moment the Committee of National Education had taken control of educational matters, the dominant role of the exclusive private colleges (Collegia Nobilium) in the education of the noble elite was reduced. The Commission opened boarding schools for the impoverished nobility, which were extremely important for the process of democratisation of education in the institutions of the Republic of the Two Nations. This type of institution meant that the acquisition of the knowledge necessary for a future profession did not necessitate becoming a student in the service of a magnate. The education of petty poor nobility was intended to make them independent of the wealthier members of society; the aim was to train them as teachers, civil servants, and soldiers, all of which were needed by the country. Headed by the royal astronomer and rector Marcin Poczobut-Odlanicki (Martin Poczobutt, 1721–1810), the ‘Great Boarding School’ of the Principal School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in Vilnius was the largest boarding school financed by the Committee of National Education funds, receiving 36,700 zloty annually. Usually, there would be 70 boarders and ten directors in the Vilnius school. Impoverished young nobles were prepared to fulfil their duty as citizens of the Republic of the Two Nations. Letters requesting acceptance to the boarding school illustrate high educational aspirations of the impoverished nobility. This phenomenon deserves further research into sources.

Straipsnyje pristatomi šeši Franciszeko Zabłockio laiškai Martynui Počobutui, rašyti 1789–1791 m., rasti Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių bibliotekoje. Iki šiol jie nebuvo publikuoti. Franciszekas Zabłockis, gerai žinomas kaip poetas ir komedijų autorius, taip pat buvo Edukacinės komisijos tarnautojas. Jis rašė Počobutui įvairiais klausimais, susijusiais su mokyklomis ir akademinės bendruomenės padėtimi Lietuvos Didžiojoje Kunigaikštystėje, nes remiantis Tautinės edukacinės komisijos nuostatais mokyklos buvo pavaldžios Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės vyriausiosios mokyklos rektoriui, o jis buvo įpareigotas teikti Komisijai ataskaitas apie jų veiklą. This article presents six previously unpublished letters from Franciszek Zabłocki to Marcin Poczobut written between 1789 and 1791 and found in the Wróblewski Library in Vilnius. Franciszek Zabłocki, better known as a poet and comedy writer, was also an official at the Commission of National Education. He wrote to Poczobut on various matters concerning schools and the situation of the academic community in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, because Poczobut was the rector of the Principal School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and, under the Law of the Commission of National Education, managed schools and was obliged to report to the Commission on their work.

Samuel Dickstein founded the journal Wiadomości Matematyczne in Warszaw, of which he edited and published 47 volumes in the years 1897–1939. One of them (volume XXV, 1921) presented the scientific work (thesis) of the famous 19th century scholar and teacher – Ignacy Domeyko (1802–1889). It was written in 1822 to obtain a master’s degree in philosophy at University of Vilna (Wilno, now Vilnius). The original manuscript of I. Domeyko is has not been preserved. This report reveals the circumstances and content of the master’s dissertation written by I. Domeyko.

The person of the Belarusian physician Francysk Skaryna unites the cultural-historical space of Western and Eastern Europe in the first half of the 16th century. He was the first publisher in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and records about his life and activities can be found in a number of archives in Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Russia etc. The focus of this study is to examine materials from Prague and Vienna, particularly looking at Skaryna’s horticultural activity (at the court of Ferdinand I in Prague) and at anthroponyms, which may help to make the search for new documents more effective.

Introduction: The search for solutions to the issue of leadership leads to hundreds of leadership studies, most of which are contradictory and inconclusive. The scientific literature on leadership in higher education is focused mainly on educational, academic, managerial or thought leadership. This literature provides the opinion that the intellectual leadership in higher education is directed towards building social and intellectual capital through a scholar’s involvement in decision-making and performance of leadership roles in ways that support the scholar’s collaborative decision-making and empowerment. Scholars see intellectual leadership as the scope of challenging processes, which incorporate ideas, values, understandings, solutions, beliefs, visions, knowledge, approaches, purpose and actions. These aspects must be accepted through collectively-shared understanding and generated contextually for organizational development in higher education. With growth in administrative demands, it becomes difficult for intellectual leaders to achieve an appropriate balance of leadership, teaching and research in higher education. Purpose: To explore and describe the conceptual contents of intellectual leadership and academic leadership by providing their similarities and differences. Methods: In the research, a descriptive literature review (Yang & Tate, 2012) was applied. The sample was mainly based on academic publications; the articles included are all refereed journal articles. Conclusions: The literature review covered wide range of aspects, which reveal that intellectual leadership consists of roles that have several orientations, but the intellectual leadership is not related to the formal administrational or managerial positions. The roles of a scholar in relation to the concept of “intellectual leadership” maybe seen through the following activity spheres: mentor represents educational sphere, guardian – moral sphere, enabler – managerial and administrative spheres, and ambassador – political and communication sphere (Zydziunaite, 2016). The importance of personal characteristics and academic achievements in the formation of intellectual leaders’ reputation is also highlighted in the article. Despite the limitations of definitions on intellectual leadership it is argued that this concept is related to the organic personality of an intellectual leader (scholar) who acts as organizer of ideas, carries responsibility for academic development and direction in higher education.

Po Lietuvos nepriklausomybės atkūrimo 1990 m. mokslinėje spaudoje jau pateikta nemažai istorinių duomenų ir Pirmosios Lietuvos Respublikos aukštųjų mokyklų intelektualų kultūrinės veiklos visuomenėje vertinimų, šios informacijos analizė sudaro galimybę nustatyti žymių mokslo asmenybių indėlio visuomenės kultūrinio ugdymo procese požymius. Šioje studijoje siekiama susisteminti istoriografijos žinias, atskleisti ir aktualizuoti šių dienų tyrimų požiūriu esminius tarpukario Lietuvos akademinės inteligentijos kultūrinės raiškos visuomenėje vertinimų ypatumus, mokslinio diskurso tendencijas. Nors naujoje mokslo ir kultūros istoriografijoje dar nėra pakankamai išsamiai ištirti visų žymiausių Lietuvos mokslininkų kultūrinio socialumo veiksniai, tačiau skelbti duomenys byloja, kad XX a. ketvirtojo dešimtmečio viduryje Vytauto Didžiojo universitete ypač ryškėjo pakilimas, kurį sąlygojo nauja Lietuvoje užaugusi ir užsienyje pasitobulinusi dėstytojų ir mokslininkų karta. Šie intelektualai aktyviau plėtojo mokslinę ir populiarią spaudą, skatino formalios ir neformalios kultūrinės veiklos visuomenėje aktyvėjimą, tarptautinius kultūrinius ryšius. The aim of this study is to analyse the interwar research of the scientific, societal and cultural interaction process in contemporary historiography, to examine and identify the trends in personal contribution to culture and public education. On the basis of the analysis it is stated that the historians of today attempt to analyse the ideological attitudes and the purposefulness of cultural expression of academic Lithuanian intelligentsia, which reflected the aspirations of the professorship to strengthen the Lithuanian national identity and national culture in the state, and linked the perspectives of self-consciousness of society members with the development of culture, which ought to have been based on the traditions of the Lithuanian nation, the perception of history, and on fostering of the Lithuanian language. As evidenced by research, some of the professorship was linking the ideological background of the formation of the Lithuanian cultural identity to Catholicism, while others – to the beginnings of the ancient pagan culture. Participation of researchers of higher educational institutions in the cultural life of the First Republic of Lithuania was partly analysed in the monographs of science and art researchers of the recent years, as well as in the academic works on the history of literature, which expand the knowledge and evaluations of historiography on the formation of the Lithuanian national cultural identity during the years of state independence. New research reveals the concerns of the university scientists about the issues of funding of cultural institutions, preservation of cultural heritage and its dissemination. The fact that historical significance of the cultural community attitude of scholars has gained little evaluation in synthetic or peer-reviewed university history publications, although that experience is relevant to today’s practice of culture development, is evaluated critically. Cultural activities have helped to unite the inter-war Lithuanian academic community, to build its social relations, however, there is no comprehensive and full analysis and evaluation of formal and informal peculiarities of consolidation possibilities of researchers, and of the role of cultural and public education activities.

Profesorius Aurelas Edmundas Fosas – vokiečių matematikas, šiandien labiausiai žinomas kaip geometrijos taikymo gamtos moksluose ir mechanikoje pradininkas. Prof. O. Folkui pasiūlius, Lietuvos universiteto Matematikos-gamtos fakultetas įsigijo prof. A.E. Foso knygų kolekciją, kuri daugelį metų buvo naudojama studijoms ir moksliniams darbams. 1940 metais sustabdžius Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto Matematikos-gamtos fakulteto veiklą, prof. A.E. Foso knygų kolekcija buvo perkelta į Vilniaus universitetą, o likusios prof. A.E Foso bibliotekos dalies likimas nežinomas. Šio darbo tikslas – atlikti prof. A.E. Foso bibliotekos paieškas Lietuvos bibliotekose ir pateikti tyrimų rezultatus plačiajai mokslo visuomenei. Atlikus mokslinius tyrimus Kauno technologijos ir Vilniaus universitetų bei Kauno apskrities bibliotekose, nedidelė dalis prof. A.E. Fosui priklausiusių knygų rasta Vilniaus universiteto Matematikos ir informatikos fakulteto bibliotekos fonduose. Professor Aurel Edmund Voss was a German mathematician, best known for his contributions to application of geometry in natural science and mechanics. The collection of books of professor A.E. Voss was bought and used by Faculty of Matematics and Nature of Univerity of Lithuania. In 1940’s the collection of books of prof. A.E. Voss was transfered to Vilnius University. The aim of the work was to investigate collections of books of libraries of Lithuania and to present books of prof. A.E. Voss to scientific society of Lithuania.

Algirdo Juliaus Greimo mokslinis ir intelektualinis palikimas iki šiol ne visas žinomas mokslininkams, juo labiau visuomenei. Nors praėjusiais metais buvo paskelbta daug Greimo rankraščių, jo laiškų (Sverdiolas 2017), tačiau vis dar aptinkama medžiagos, teikiančios naujų žinių apie mokslinę jo „virtuvę“. Šis straipsnis skirtas mitologijos tyrimų palikimui, tiksliau sakant, vienai jo daliai – mitologijos šaltinių išrašams. Juos Greimas vadino kortelėmis ir 1987 m. siuntė Broniui Savukynui kaip tekstų būsimam mitologijos žodynui pavyzdžius (Savukynas 2002: 81). Vėliau į Vilniaus universitetą su Greimo rankraščiais atkeliavo daugiau kortelių, tik jau ne su rašiniais, o su šaltinių išrašais (Greimas 2005: 750). Po semiotiko mirties stalčiuose liko nemažai mitologijos tyrimų medžiagos, iš kurios Kęstutis Nastopka paskelbė net keturias nebaigtas mitologijos apybraižas, pluoštelį enciklopedinio pobūdžio straipsnių apie lietuvių dievus (Greimas 2005: 618−637). The author suggests that many aspects of the legacy of Greimas is still unknown to scholars as well as general audience as new and new material in his archives is being found.

The publication presents the activity of Polish scientists and patrons of science on the example of two social scientifi c organizations: Society of Patrons of Sciences in Vilnius (1907-1939) and the Association of Poles Scientists of Lithuania, operating in Vilnius from April 14, 1989. Article present their merits in researching and spreading knowledge. Au thors has shown the history of the Polish intelligentsia in the Vilnius region aft er the tragic September of 1939. Research has shown that the Society of Patrons of Sciences in Vilnius contributed significantly to the study and dissemination of knowledge about the history and culture of the polish native, forming and strengthening Polish national consciousness on the Vilnius Land, as well as preservation of cultural heritage. Currently, his traditions are continued by the Association of Scientists of Poles of Lithuania, which since 1989, which, despite many difficulties, has developed activities and took a significant place in the life of the Polish community in Lithuania.

Alfonsas Šešplaukis-Tyruolis buvo poetas, vertėjas, literatūros mokslininkas, nagrinėjęs Lietuvos ir lietuvių literatūros ryšius su kitų tautų literatūra, pasaulinių enciklopedijų bendradarbis, antologijų redaktorius, eseistas, kritikas, recenzentas. Anot poeto Kazio Bradūno: Tai retas šviesuolis, kuris taip viso savo gyvenimo darbuotę yra pašventęs vien literatūrai. Alfonsas Šešplaukis-Tyruolis was a poet, translator and scientist who studied connection of the Lithuanian literature to the literature of other countries; he was also a collaborator of global encyclopedias, editor of anthologies, essayist, critic and reviewer. According to poet Kazys Bradūnas, he was a rare enlightened man who dedicated his whole life to literature.

Straipsnyje akademinių-socialinių ryšių kontekste nagrinėjama Pirmosios Lietuvos Respublikos aukštųjų mokyklų mokslininkų istorinė šviečiamoji raiška visuomenėje nuo universiteto įsteigimo Kaune 1922 m. iki sovietinimo ir aukštojo mokslo pertvarkymų pradžios 1940 metais. Atliekant tyrimą, panaudoti skelbti ir archyviniai šaltiniai, publikuoti biografiniai darbai, kurie padėjo atskleisti mokslininkų šviečiamosios veiklos ypatumus, istorinio tarpukario visuomenės švietimo funkcijas ir formas.

Commercialization of university research activities relevant to the recent worldwide. Although all scientific knowledge generated has an impact on intellectual property development, a new generation of discoveries and inventions, but the commercial application of research to develop new technologies and innovation, contributing to the high value-added development and strengthen the country's economy. It is the commercialization of research activity support research ideas become products that find new ways of solving problems, destroys existing transforms old or create new markets. There are new models based on fundamental research commercialization activities, and promote education, business and public sector cooperation. Therefore, this research paper compared various authors opinion, the commercialization of research activity and the role of concepts in the context of the country's economy, compared to Lithuania and various foreign universities, research activity commercialization processes, identified the most significant research applications, to improve the overall level of the country, the possibilities. Scientists reach high results allow to state that the Lithuanian universities with the most qualified, educated, with excellent local knowledge experts. This creates good preconditions to commercially exploit the invention and to improve the lot of the country's economic development internationally. However, the commercialization of scientific results, universities face a number of challenges: innovation in design and development are not the right conditions, the country's leaders do not pay enough attention to the commercialization of innovative technologies, and new technologies in the country's industry is slow. The decline in value of the results of scientific activities, limited only scientific publications, and prevents a strong economy, a stable financial system, and a high level of new technology, innovation viable development opportunities for improvement. While experts recognize the business and science cooperation benefits in Lithuania there is a great divide between businesses and education institutions. So it is necessary to distinguish the process of commercialization of research activity and its importance to other stages of the implementation of the context in which technology path from basic research to application value is long enough.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama, kokie įvaizdžiai apie moterį mokslininkę (fizinių ir technologinių mokslų srityse) vyrauja tarp paauglių, ar tokias nuostatas lemia lyčių stereotipai. Tyrimas atskleidė šiuos vyraujančius moters mokslininkės įvaizdžius: patrauklios ir kompetentingos mokslininkės, nepatrauklios darboholikės, seksualios mokslininkės, neutraliai atrodančios mokslininkės. Paaiškėjo, kad paaugliams, ypač vaikinams, būdingi stereotipiniai ir pakankamai negatyvūs tradiciškai vyriškoje srityje dirbančios moters mokslininkės vertinimai, o merginos daugiau teigiamai ir neutraliai įsivaizduoja tokią moterį, pabrėždamos komunikacinę bei profesinę jos kompetencijas. Sector of technological and physical sciences is exceptionally male professional area and it is rather difficult for women to become professionals in this field. Professional gender stereotypes is one of the main reasons that impact attitudes towards women in this male area. This paper aims to identify images of female scientist in the field of technological and physical sciences among Lithuanian teenagers. The sample consisted of 1398 respondents (58 % females and 42 % males). Qualitative content analysis was used in this study. The study showed that four images of the female scientist are dominating among teenagers: attractive and competent scientist, unattractive scientist, sexually looking scientist and neutrally looking scientist. The results of the empirical analysis indicated that stereotypical evaluations and even discriminating attitudes are more characteristic for the male respondents while female respondents use to evaluate the female scientist neutrally or even idealized.

Professor Adolfas Damusis (16 June 1908–27 February 2003) was a world-famous chemist, inventor (obtained 24 patents for his inventions in the field of polymer chemistry in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom and France), statesman and public activist. Dr Damusis name was inseparable from the resistance fighters for Lithuania’s independence. He was one of the organizers and leaders of the June revolt in 1941 and the minister of the Provisional Government of Lithuania. Dr A. Damusis was an academician of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science (1964), a professor of Detroit University (1973), a winner of Stasys Salkauskis Prize (1981) and an Honorary Doctor of Vytautas Magnus University (1997). A. Damusis was honoured with the award of the Order of St. Silvester (1984) by Pope John Paul II. On 27 September 1994, the Republic of Lithuania decorated him with the Second Class Vytis Cross Order (the first award of this kind in Lithuania after restoring its independence). A. Damusis did research into limestone in the Jiesia valley near Kaunas, around Skirsnemunė and in the fields of Menciai, Karpėnai and Vegeriai (next to present day Naujoji Akmenė). The construction of the first cement works in Lithuania was started on the basis of his project, yet it was interrupted by the war and Soviet occupation. Keeping to A. Damusis schemes, cement works were built in another locality later developed into the town of Naujoji Akmenė which became the realization of A. Damusis ideas. His deserts to Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) for saving its existence are considerable as he managed to preserve the laboratory of war chemistry throughout the Soviet and Nazi occupations. It was shifted from the administrative subordination to the Ministry of Defence to the sub-ordination of the Ministry of Education and, eventually, to VMU. Moreover, Dr Adolfas Damusis, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, expressed his resolute opposition to the delegate of the German government against the intent to merge VMU into the University of Germany. On 16 June 1944, Dr A. Damusis was arrested and charged with treason for his anti-Nazi underground activities (one of the chief leaders who was actively involved in organizing the chief body of resistance forces, VLIK, represented the Lithuanian Front and was the vice-president of VLIK in 1943–1944). Like all other detainees, he was to appear before the court. Owing to the adverse development of the war for Germany, the prisoners were transferred from prison to prison until they were freed on 14 April 1945. However, A. Damusis became a forced emigrant. After two years of work in Germany, he emigrated to the United States and worked for the Shcerwin Williams company (1947–1957), the Basf Wyandotte company (1957–1973) and was the Vice-rector of the Institute of polymers of Detroit University (1973–1983). His major works in chemistry were accomplished in the diaspora: he obtained 24 patents for his inventions, wrote important research projects on industry and the companies he worked for, presented papers in symposiums, workshops, conferences and congresses and published articles. His study on binding agents (1967) was conferred the status of the degree of the international expert. Like many other Lithuanian technicians, engineers and architects he made a weighty contribution to the science of the USA. By propagating new achievements in the science of chemistry, he contributed to disseminating information about Lithuania suffering from the brutalities of the Soviet occupation at that time and was being drowned in the joint family of the nations of the Soviet Union. Mokslo komunikacija, išryškinanti mokslo idėjų, tyrimo rezultatų sklaidą, mokslininkų bendravimą ir bendradarbiavimą, tampa aktualia ir vis dažniau diskutuojama tema Lietuvoje. Pastaraisiais metais Lietuvoje buvo atliki keli tyrimai, atskleidžiantys formaliosios mokslo komunikacijos padėtį, raišką, atsakomybę Lietuvoje. Tačiau tiek Lietuvoje, tiek užsienyje menkai tiriama mokslininkų tinklų raiškos problematika, kuri sietina su keliais tyrimo aspektais: visų pirma mokslininkų tinklų analizė leidžia nustatyti esminius, kritinius mokslinių idėjų atitinkamose srityse sankaupos taškus (mokslo leidinius, mokslines konferencijas, mokslininkų organizacijas, pan.); kita vertus, mokslininkų tinklų analizė leidžia nustatyti mokslo raidą, atitinkamos mokslo srities raidos tendencijas. In recent years, in Lithuania there were developed several researches for analysis of the position and conditions, expression and manifestation of formal documentary science communication. In the Lithuanian and foreign scientific tradition, the problems of scientific networks (networks of scientists) were investigated only in the context of scientific communication, but the network question was not raised.The aim of the investigation (carried 2008) could be named as, first, analysis of the networks of scientists allows to show the main points of collections of scientific ideas in particular scientific spheres (scientific journals, scientific conferences, scientific organizations, etc.); second, analysis of scientific network to show the development of the scientific sphere, the evolution of scientific ideas and main tendencies.Analysis of the network of scientists allows to investigate not only formal and informal scientific network, but also to exhibit tendencies of the development and change of interdisciplinary scientific researches, as well as to involve scientists and other interested parties into discussion.The research deals with attitudes of Lithuanian scientists working in the field of humanities toward science communication, analysis of the development of scientific publications, relations among scientists through the scientific journals that are selected for publication of scientific articles.

Remiantis moksliniais Lietuvos ir užsienio autorių tyrimais, straipsnyje analizuojama profesinės socializacijos moksle samprata, taip pat siekiama išryškinti socializacijos proceso specifi ką technologijos mokslų srityje. Profesinės socializacijos moksle laikotarpis – tai laikotarpis nuo tapimo studentu, t. y. doktorantu, iki tapimo mokslininku, t. y. apgynus daktaro disertaciją ir savarankiškai pradėjus vykdyti mokslinę veiklą. Straipsnyje trumpai aptariami profesinės socializacijos moksle procesui įtaką turintys veikėjai, atstovaujantys skirtingus socialinius (tarptautinį, nacionalinį, organizacinį, individo (galūnės) lygmenis. Pabrėžiama, jog profesinės socializacijos procesas technologijos moksluose turėtų būti nukreiptas dviem kryptimis: mokslo bendruomenės viduje ir santykyje su visuomene. In science of professional socialization, the process is inseparable from researcher’s professional development, which is expressed as a structured approach to the continuous development of scientific knowledge, expertise in all stages of scientific career, i.e., a period covering the time period from becoming a doctoral student to becoming a scientist. This article analyses the concept of professional socialization in science on basis of scientific literature’s analysis and factors influencing this process. In the first part of the article, the general concept of professional socialization and basic principles of this process are discussed. The second part analyses the concept of professional socialization in science, the main stages of this process and factors influencing this process. The third part of the article briefly discusses actors affecting the process of professional socialization. The fourth part is devoted to factors that influence the process of professional socialization in technological science. According to different scientific approaches, the process of professional socialization in doctoral education depends on the chosen field of science, formal and informal standards existing in that field of science, institutional culture and personal provisions of the future scientist. The process of doctoral student’s professional socialization can be exposed by various levels of actors: education policy makers (in the international and national levels) and implementers of this policy (universities, research institutes, individual units). The process of professional socialization in technology sciences should be directed in two directions: within the scientific community, where the doctoral students socialize in order to become competent members of this community and they seek professionalism, second direction is focused on external factors, i.e., scientific dissemination to the public, the creation of favourable scientist’s prestige and image.

Straipsnyje analizuojamos galimybės debesijos technologijas (angį. Cloud Computing) panaudoti bibliotekų veiklai organizuoti intemetinėje erdvėje. Siekiant vienodo minėtų technologijų esmės supratimo, straipsnyje aptariamos SaaS, IaaS ir PaaS debesijos technologijų paslaugos, kurios gali būti panaudotos bibliotekų veiklai perkelti j internetą. Pateikiamos apibendrintos bibliotekų veiklos gerinimo skaitmeniniame amžiuje galimybės, analizuojami tarptautinės patirties bibliotekų pertvarkos pavyzdžiai. Straipsnyje aptariami Lietuvos mokslo bendruomenės apklausos rezultatai, kurie patvirtina, kad dauguma Lietuvos mokslinės bendruomenės narių (apie 90 proc.) yra suinteresuota gauti visapusę prieigą prie elektroninių leidinių internetu. Daroma išvada, kad, mažėjant bibliotekų finansavimui, debesijos technologijų panaudojimas būtų ekonomiškai naudingas žingsnis, ne mažinant, o plečiant teikiamas bibliotekų paslaugas ir gerinant jų kokybę. The article analyses the possibility of how Cloud Computing can be used by libraries to organise activities online. In order to achieve a uniform understanding of the essence of technology SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS, the article discusses the Cloud Computing services, which can be used for the relocation of libraries to the Internet. The improvement of the general activity of libraries in the digital age, the analysis of the international experience in the libraries are examples. Also the article discusses the results of a survey of the Lithuanian scientific community that confirms that 90% of the scientific community is in the interest of getting full access to e-publications online. It is concluded that the decrease in funding for libraries, Cloud Computing can be an economically beneficial step, expanding the library services and improving their quality.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiamas Augustino Voldemaro biografijos tarpsnis. Voldemaras gimė 1883 m., 1913-1920 m. dėstytojavo Peterburge, 1920 m. tęsė mokslininko karjerą Kaune, nuo 1922 m. buvo Lietuvos universiteto visuotinės istorijos katedros profesorius. Visų pirma Voldemaras pasižymėjo kaip istorikas – 1911 m. parengė magistrinį darbą, už kurį gavo aukso medalį, 1914 m. paskelbė bene pirmą istorikos ir istorijos metodologijos straipsnį lietuvių kalba. Peterburge dėstė senovės Romos istoriografiją, Romos istoriją, senąsias graikų, lotynų kalbas ir anglų kalbą. Lietuvos universitete – Klasikinės senovės istoriją, Romos istoriją, Romos valstybės teisę, istorijos mokslo metodologiją ir kt. 1926 m. Voldemarui iškelta drausminė byla, kad šis Humanitarinių mokslų fakulteto leidinyje „Raštai“ išspausdino fakultetą ir visą universitetą įžeidžiančią pratarmę pavadinimu „Lecturis salutem“. Voldemaras kritikavo privilegijuotą profesūros padėtį, siūlė mažinti fakultetų, katedrų ir nekvalifikuotos profesūros skaičių. Dėl to buvo pašalintas iš universiteto. Remiantis paskaitų rankraščiais, pasisakymais dėl universiteto sąrangos, Voldemaras buvo gerai metodologiškai pasirengęs klasikinės senovės istorijos dėstytojas, o tokių daugiau Kauno universitete nebuvo. Tai patvirtina ir faktas, kad profesorių palaikė kiti universiteto specialistai, pavyzdžiui, Karsavinas. Ankstyvą akademinės karjeros baigtį lėmė politinė konjunktūra ir įtakingas varžovas akademiniame lauke Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius. The article reviews a part of Augustinas Voldemaras biography. Voldemaras was born in 1883, in 1913-1920 he was teaching in St. Petersburg, in 1920 he had continued his scholar career in Kaunas, and since 1922 was working as a professor of the Department of Global History at the University of Lithuania. First of all, Voldemaras was noted as a historian, i.e. in 1911 he had prepared his master's thesis, for which he received the gold medal, and in 1914 he published probably the first article on the historics and history methodology in the Lithuanian language. In St. Petersburg he was teaching ancient Roman historiography, Roman history, and ancient Greek, Latin and English languages. In the University of Lithuania he was teaching Classic ancient history, history of Rome, law of the Roman state, methodology of historical science, etc. In 1926 a disciplinary case was started against Voldemaras because in the edition of "Raštai" ("Writings") of the Faculty of Humanities he had published a preface named Lecturis salutem offending the faculty and an the whole university. Voldemaras had criticized the privileged position of the professorship and suggested reducing the number of faculties, departments and unqualified professors. As a result, he was removed from the university. Basing on the manuscripts of lectures, thoughts on university organization, it can be stated that Voldemaras was a methodologically well-trained lecturer of the classical history of history, and there were nobody else similar to him in Kaunas University. This is also confirmed by the fact that the professors was supported by other university specialists, for example, Karsavinas. The early finish in the academic career was determined by the political juncture and influential rival in the academic field Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius.

Dauguma, dabar egzistuojančių, akademinių sistemų ir struktūrų remiasi prieš šimtmetį sukurtais modeliais, kai vyrų vaidmuo šiose institucijose buvo dominuojantis. Šiuo metu vis dar egzistuoja daug skepticizmo galimų pokyčių atžvilgiu. Pastebimas akivaizdus atotrūkis tarp principų, retorikos ir realybės. 2010 m. moterys, daug aktyviau nei vyrai, siekė aukštojo mokslo bei aukštesniojo išsilavinimo, tačiau akivaizdu, jog moterų mokslininkių skaičius yra ryškiai mažesnis nei aukštą profesinę kvalifikaciją įgijusių vyrų mokslininkų. Galima daryti prielaidą, jog aukštojo mokslo institucijų kultūra bei sandara priešinasi moterų-mokslininkių integracijai į vyrų dominuojamą erdvę. Dažnai akademinės aplinka kelia aukštus reikalavimus moterims-mokslininkėms, bet retai gali konceptualiai tuos reikalavimus pagrįsti. Šio straipsnio tikslas yra ištirti kaip aukštojo mokslo institucinė struktūra skatina arba užkerta kelią vienai iš esminių ES iniciatyvų „Realizuoti struktūrinius pokyčius mokslinėse Lietuvos institucijose bei universitetuose“, kurie turėtų pagerinti vidinę institucijų kultūrą, nukreiptą į moterų vaidmens pokyčius mokslo, technologijos, inžinerijos bei matematikos srityse (MTIM). Šis mokslinis tyrimas buvo atliekamas dviem etapais. Pirmasis etapas apima tyrimo koncepcijos bei metodologijos parengimą kaip realizuoti institucijos kultūros pokyčius, siekiant darnios proporcijos tarp moterų ir vyrų mokslininkų MTIM struktūrose. Antroje tyrimo pakopoje bandyta parengti konceptualų institucijos pokyčių modelį, kuris įgalintų kaitą instituciniame, katedrų bei asmeniniame lygmenyse. Nors dauguma įvairialyčių mokslo institucijų deklaruoja, kad lyčių lygybės klausimai yra sprendžiami, vis dar išlieka dauguma vyrų ir moterų, atstovaujančius fakultetų tarybų veiklą, manančių, kad moterims mokslininkėms yra sunku derinti karjerą ir šeimą. Pasak Rees (1998) egzistuoja 3 lyčių lygybės modeliai: pirmasis modelis yra grindžiamas „panašumo“ tarp vyrų ir moterų principu, ypač tose srityse, kur dominuoja vyrai; antrasis modelis orientuojasi į vienodą vyrų ir moterų indėlio į mokslinę veiklą vertinimu lytis segreguojančioje visuomenėje; trečiasis modelis kelia naujus reikalavimus vyrams ir moterims, t.y. ragina transformuoti lyčių santykius. Straipsnyje taip pat atskleidžiami trys tradiciniai požiūriai į lytiškumą bei organizacinius pokyčius (R. J. Ely and D. E. Meyerson 2000). Pirmasis požiūris „Moterų įvardijimas/fiksacija“. Moterys ir vyrai skirtingi tiek biologinėje, tiek ir socialinėje plotmėse. Socialiniai skirtumai išprovokuoja nelygybę darbo sferoje. Remiantis šiuo požiūriu, moterys turi tobulinti savo socialinius įgūdžius, kad lygiomis teisėmis galėtų konkuruoti biznio, mokslo srityse su vyrais. Laikantis moterų „fiksacijos“ požiūrio, organizacinė struktūra lieka nepakitusi, tai reiškia, kad moterys pačios turi prisitaikyti, asimiliuotis prie nusistovėjusios institucijos tvarkos. Antrasis požiūris „Moteriškumas yra vertybė“ arba moterys skiriasi nuo vyrų. Šis požiūris kovoja su nuostata, jog moteris yra silpna, jos vieta namie. Priešingai, jai reikia suteikti žodžio laisvę, gerbti jos moteriškumą, leisti moterims reikštis ugdymo, auklėjimo srityse. Instituciniame lygmenyje šis požiūris menkai padidina lyčių lygybės galimybes, greičiau jas dar labiau paryškina. [...] Most academic systems and structures, as they exist today, are based on models which were designed centuries ago, at a time when men exclusively predominated in universities. There is certain scepticism towards what can be achieved, though. A continuing evident gap is apparent between principles, rhetoric and reality. In 2010, women were pursuing upper secondary and higher education more actively than men, but, evidently, women remain more strongly underrepresented among researchers than among highly qualified professionals in traditionally male dominated scientific and professional fields. This could point towards a situation where the organisational culture mounts resistance against the integration of women. Briefly, they require but often lack conceptual frameworks. The purpose of this study was to examine how institutional culture promoted or impeded the implementation of one of the EU flagship initiatives "Implementing structural change in research organizations / universities" in Lithuania, which should be designed to improve the institutional culture for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, a conceptual framework and methodology was developed for designing institutional transformational change at STEM faculties of University to sustain the practice of gender equality. In the second stage, the design of the Model Institutional Transformational Change was attempted to be conceptualized in order to achieve change on institutional, departmental and individual levels.

Universiteto dėstytojo, kaip mokslininko, lektoriaus, psichologo ir kitas funkcijas atliekančiojo, vaidmuo yra didelis. Pastaraisiais metais keičiantis mokslo paradigmai, t. y. labiau orientuojantis į studentų savarankišką mokymąsi, ypač vykdant svarbiausius Bolonijos proceso dokumentų nurodymus, dėstytojo vaidmuo nemąžta. Šiame straipsnyje, remiantis empirinio tyrimo duomenimis, aptariami studentų poreikiai universiteto dėstytojui kaip mokslininkui ir lektoriui. Pažinimo objekto strategija – fenomenologinė. Duomenų rinkimo metodas – grupinė diskusija. Taikyta tikslinė homogeniškų grupių atranka – pasirinktos 5 edukologijos krypties studentų grupės. Tyrimo imtis – 62 studentai. Diskusijų duomenų pagrindu suformuluotos kategorijos interpretuojamos teoriškai. Tyrimas atskleidė studentų poreikius dėstytojui kaip mokslininkui, autoritetingam žmogui, kuris savo profesionalumu, atsidavimu darbui didelę teigiamą įtaką daro studentui, uždega veiklai, rodo sektiną santykio su mokslu pavyzdį. Dėstytojui, kaip lektoriui, studentai taiko aukščiausius standartus The role of a university lecturer as a scientist, teacher and psychologist is enormous. During recent years the paradigm of science is changing, i.e. it is more orientated at students’ autonomous learning (especially fulfilling the documents of Bologna process). Nevertheless the role of a lecturer has not become less important. This article is based on data of empirical research and is about students’ requirements for a university lecturer as a scientist and a teacher. The strategy of cognition object is phenomenological. The method of collecting data is group discussion. Purposive homogeneous selection of groups has been applied and 5 different groups of students of educology have been chosen. On the basis of discussion data categories have been formulated and interpreted theoretically. The research revealed students’ needs and requirements for a lecturer as a scientist, a competent person, who is a professional, devoted to one’s job and makes a big influence on students, inspires and shows an example of relation to the science to be followed. Students measure a lecturer as a teacher according to the highest standards

Kai 1812 metų birželį Napoleonas įžengia į Vilnių, žymūs iš užsienio šalių suvažiavę universiteto dėstytojai palieka miestą. Kaip paaiškinti tokį kosmopolitinio elito elgesį: išvykti tada, kai Vilniaus universiteto šlovė šių rinktinių vyrų dėka plačiai pasklinda po Europą ir duoda teisę šiandieniniams Lietuvos tyrinėtojams apibrėžti jų veiklos etapą kaip „aukso amžių“? Kodėl Bojanus, kilęs iš tos pačios šalies, kaip Napoleonas, pasitraukia į Sankt Peterburgą? Atsakymą į klausimus gali duoti šio mokslininko gyvenimo kelias, kuris atspindi atskirų Prancūzijos provincijų situaciją XVIII-IX amžių sandūroje. Liudvigas Heinrichas Bojanus gimė 1776 m. Elzase, Buksvileryje (Bouxwiller), Hanau-Lichtenbergo grafystėje, kur praleido savo jaunystę. Elzasas, jau visą šimtmetį priklausydamas prancūzų kraštui, užima ypatingą padėtį Prancūzijos karalystėje. 1648 m. atplėštas nuo germanų tautų Šventosios Romos imperijos, Elzasas tampa labiausiai į Rytus nukrypusiu karalystės smaigaliu. Tai, kad ši pasienio provincija buvo atleista nuo muitų, sudarė palankias sąlygas palaikyti glaudžius prekybinius ryšius su likusiais Europos kraštais – nuo Reino iki Šiaurės ir Baltijos jūrų. Kitas įdomus faktas, kad skirtingai nei likusioje Prancūzijos dalyje trečdalį Elzaso gyventojų – šalia katalikų ir žydų – sudarė protestantai. Šią tikėjimų įvairovę – iki mūsų dienų išlikusį būdingą Elzaso bruožą – Bojanus atras ir Vilniuje. Šalia prancūzų vartojama vokiečių kalba bei alemaniškasis dialektas – tokia dvikultūrė Elzaso aplinka, gana dažna Europoje, Prancūzijos karalystėje sudarė išimtį. Be to, Elzasas garsėja itin puikia mokymo sistema. Strasbūras, antrasis pagal studentų skaičių akademinis Prancūzijos miestas, turi du Europoje žinomus universitetus – protestantiškąjį ir katalikiškąjį. Palyginti su kitais Prancūzijos universitetais, Strasbūro aukštosios mokyklos buvo ir labiau kosmopolitinės (70 proc. jose sudarė užsienio studentai), ir atviresnės Rytams (6 proc. – studentai iš Rusijos ir Baltijos provincijų). Nėra abejonės, kad ši ypatinga Elzaso situacija darė įtaką ir gimtajam Bojanaus miestui Buksvileriui, kur jo tėvas Johanas Jakobas Bojanus buvo grafystės valdininkas. Jaunasis Bojanus lankė Buksvilerio gimnaziją – tikrą valdininkų ir gydytojų lopšį, kuris ir turėjo jį atvesti prie Strasbūro universiteto durų. Didžioji prancūzų revoliucija smarkiai atsiliepė Bojanaus likimui: jam buvo 13 metų, kai 1789 m. prasidėję neramumai sukrėtė Buksvilerį. Vėliau kilo dar baisesnė panika, kai 1793 metais, prasidėjus karui su Austrija ir įsisiautėjus revoliucijos terorui, Elzaso šiaurės gyventojai, kaip ir Bojanaus šeima, ėmė ieškoti prieglobsčio Reino vokiškajame krante. Laikydama šiuos emigrantus tėvynės išdavikais, revoliucinė valdžia įrašė jų pavardes į sąrašus, kurie buvo skelbiami plakatuose ar spaudoje. Iš tais laikais Prancūzijoje buvusių 87 departamentų Žemutiniojo Reino (Elzaso šiaurės) departamentas sulaukė didžiausio emigrantų skaičiaus: iš 129 099 pavardžių, įtrauktų į visos Prancūzijos sąrašus, Elzaso šiaurės sritis netenka 20 510 (4,6 proc. gyventojų). Straipsnyje apibendrinama mokslininkų iš ne Europos Sąjungos šalių integracijos Lietuvos universitetuose patirtis, pateikiant šalies viešosios politikos institucijų ir atskirų universitetų atvirumo bei imlumo aukštos kvalifikacijos užsieniečiams tyrimo rezultatus. Aptariami įvairaus lygmens integracijos s÷kmei darantys įtaką veiksniai: valstyb÷s lygmens struktūriniai, instituciniai ir kultūriniai veiksniai; organizacin÷s sandaros ir kultūros, strateginių pl÷tojimo planų, universitetų lyderių ir personalo kompetencijų bei lūkesčių veiksniai; individo asmeninių savybių, profesin÷s patirties, konkrečiu atveju susiklosčiusių aplinkybių veiksniai. The paper analyzes integration experience of foreign researchers (non EU nationals) in Lithuanian universities. The paper assesses openness and engagement of Lithuanian public institutions and universities towards highly skilled foreign specialists. The analytical framework distinguishes three levels of factors which contribute to the success of integration: macro level (state) factors such as social structure, institutional design and regulations, cultural attitudes and traditions; mezzo level (university) factors such as infra-structure, competences, organizational visions and expectations of the leadership and the staff and micro level (individual) factors such as personality traits, professional experience and family circumstances of the immigrant scholars.

Lietuvos TSR mokslų akademijos Etnologijos instituto įkūrimas 1941 m. straipsnyje pateiktas kaip sovietinės okupacinės valdžios inspiruotas jos mokslo politikos žingsnis siekiant daryti ideologinę įtaką Lietuvos visuomenei. Sugretinama etnologijos mokslo padėtis Sovietų Sąjungoje, kaimyninėse šalyse ir Lietuvoje Antrojo pasaulinio karo išvakarėse bei pirmosios sovietinės okupacijos metais. Straipsnio tikslas: naudojant naujus Lietuvos mokslų akademijos archyvo duomenis aptarti XX a. pirmojoje pusėje susiklosčiusią Lietuvoje tradicinę etnologijos sampratą, sugretinti ją su etnologijos mokslo padėtimi SSRS ir apžvelgti Etnologijos instituto įkūrimą ir veiklą bei jos aplinkybes pirmosios sovietinės okupacijos metais. Article analyses the problem of coexistence and opposition between the occupation authorities and scientific officers in the occupied country. The circumstances of establishing the Institute of Ethnology in Lithuania in 1941 and its activities are viewed as the attempt of the Soviet occupation authorities to ideologically influence the society via the politics of science and the efforts of the society to make use of the Soviet rhetoric in order to sustain the local scholarly tradition important to the nation's culture. The article is based on the unpublished historic sources from the archive of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and other data. The establishment of the Institute of Ethnology of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences and its short-term existence was related to the participants of World War II, the countries that occupied Lithuania – the Soviet Union and Germany. The Soviet period is still veiled in the historiography of ethnology. It was politically unacceptable to speak about the activities of the Institute in the Soviet times as a number of prominent scholars who worked there had emigrated. Besides, as of 1937 ethnology was no longer referred to as science in the USSR. Biographies of repatriated ethnologists contained records of their work in the institutions of independent Lithuania evading the fact that in the Soviet times those were incorporated into the Institute of Ethnology. The formation of ethnology in Lithuania up to the middle of the 20th century was strongly influenced by the development of the science in Western Europe. Lithuanian Scientific Society, founded in 1907, took the statutes of the Anthropological Society of Vienna and the Russian Imperial Geographical Society in St. Petersburg as the basis for its own statute and emphasized the necessity to foster ethnology, ethnography, archaeology, history and other sciences. Pranas Dovydaitis, from 1924 the editor of the journal of religious science Soter, published at the University of Lithuania (later renamed into Vytautas Magnus University), closely followed the news on ethnology from the Western world, extensively surveyed in the magazine the newest research and disputes regarding the methods and concepts of the science. On the eve of the first Soviet occupation, the differentiation of ethnological sciences which formed in the late 19th century was still in progress in Lithuania. It embraced theoretical ethnological studies and ethnology analogous to Polish ludoznawstwo and German Volkskunde. At times, overlapping branches of the study of national culture such as ethnological ethnography, folkloristics, art criticism, ethnomusicology and mythology analysed local ethno-cultural and social phenomena. Theoreticians Jonas Baldžius, Jonas Balys, Jonas Basanavičius and Pranas Dovydaitis sought wider cultural context and more extensive space for comparative analysis. In the Soviet Union the period of 1928-1938 was marked by ideological repressive struggle attempting to accommodate the fundamental scientific concepts related to ethnicity, ethnic particularity, cultural development, etc. to Marxism. The majority of prominent specialists in the humanities were arrested and penalized. [...]

Analysis of the factors that influenced the degree of popularity of Tadas Ivanauskas and Pranciškus Baltrus Šivickis, two famous Lithuanian biologists of the 20th century, was carried out. For the broader Lithuanian society, Ivanauskas is much better known, while biologists know that the scientific achievements of Šivickis are much greater. They both were very active organizers of educational processes in Lithuania, but the fields of activity of Ivanauskas were more visible and interesting for the broader public. Ivanauskas wrote much more items of popular scientific literature than Šivickis, which was another reason that made him remarkably popular. The most important factor was a political one: Šivickis resisted the ideologization of science, whereas Ivanauskas adjusted quite well to the new social system. Therefore, the mass media propagated his achievements and he was extremely popular during the whole Soviet period. Nearly fifty years of promoting Ivanauskas left marked prints in human memory: even today he is much better known than Šivickis by the general Lithuanian society. Our analysis showed that Ivanauskas was a great organizer, a great educationalist, but not a great scientist; his scientific achievements were exaggerated during the Soviet period. The life histories of the two famous biologists point to another common rule characteristic of all historical periods: fundamental researches are very often bound to remain unpopular as it takes a long time until they become understandable for the major part of society.

Diskusijos apie mokslo sričių prestižą vyksta renkantis būsimą specialybę, siekiant įsidarbinti baigus universitetą, vertinant mokslo pažangą, skiriant finansavimą atskiroms mokslo sritims, skirstant stipendijas, formuojant šalies mokslo prioritetines sritis. Šiame straipsnyje pristatomas tyrimas, kuriuo siekta atsakyti į probleminį klausimą: kaip edukologijos mokslininko įvaizdį vertina skirtingų mokslo sričių kolegos ir studentai? Image has an important role in choosing profession, that is, studies for professions. Also, image is an important factor for establishing practices and priorities of both regional and international research trends. Researcher's image is being discussed for some time, however, researcher's in education image is a new theme. Education science has been discussed as a separate field from pedagogy just during the last two decades, therefore, researcher's in education science image is still at focus. In this paper a part of study results are presented. Only qualitative data is presented here

Juozas Eretas (Joseph Ehret) (18 October 1896 – 13 March 1984) was an eminent scholar of Lithuania and Switzerland as well as a doctor of Philosophy. He arrived in Lithuania in autumn 1919 under an obligation to his dying Lithuanian friend Mykolas Asmys who had asked him to do something for him in Lithuania. In 1920, he initiated the establishment of the ELTA (the Lithuanian Agency of Telegrams of Eretas). Once he received the Lithuanian citizenship, he accomplished valuable work aimed at the strengthening of the state of Lithuania. J. Eretas voluntarily joined the Lithuanian military service (1920); This act encouraged Lithuanian intelligentsia to follow in his footsteps. The contribution of professor Eretas to the foundation of the University of Lithuania (named after Vytautas Magnus in 1930) is remarkable. He was appointed to a professorship of the university and performed his professorial duties during 1922–1940 (with an interval from 1931–1932 when he was dismissed from the office). Eretas was one of the founders of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science (LKMA). When the Catholic Academy was established in 1922, he became its active member. He presented papers at its conferences, edited the I-III volumes of the transactions of the LKMA Conferences. At the Second Conference of the LKMA (1936), he was elected academician and became honorary member while in emigration (1975). Eretas was a literary historian and an author of numerous important writings such as “Bethoven’s youth” (1927), “Henrich Seuse” (1929), “Meister Eckehart” (1930), “Jonas Tauleris” (1930). He was the first to offer a comprehensive and thorough presentation of German literature in Lithuanian: “The history of German literature” (1931, Vol. I), “Young Goethe” (1933) and others. He was known as a brilliant publicist for his prolific publications in the press and his editorials to the “XX amžius” (The 20th Century) weekly on the outbreak of the war in Spain, signed by the pen-name “Hispanus”. Eretas was a well-known founder and editor of newspapers (for temperance, sport and the Catholic rural youth). Back in Switzerland, he was elected honorary member of the Lithuanian writers’ Union (USA). The public activity of Eretas was just as outstanding. He headed the Catholic rural youth union “Pavasaris” (Spring) (1922–1928), in 1928, he was elected as its honorary president. He was one of the founders of the “Pavasaris” folk university (1925) and the patron of the literary association “Satrija” for the students of the ateitininkai movement. Much worthy work was done by him in the fields of temperance and sports. He was among the founders of the Gymnastics and Sports Federation of Lithuania (LGSF) (1922) and one of the organizers of the Sports League of Lithuania (1923). Owing to the initiative of Eretas as well as his talent as an organizer, massive public events of pavasarininkai were held for the first time in Lithuania (Siauliai, 1924; Kaunas, 1927). These events attracted thousands of young people. Eretas was eager to serve Lithuania even after he was forced to emigrate. He was concerned about the fate of the Lithuanian emigrants and tackled their problems in his book “A trilogy of exile”: (“Exile – a curse or a task” (1963), “A Lithuanian of exile in the vortex of ideas” (1965) and “Exile as a phenomenon of history” (1965) and also “Minor nations and states (Their importance to Europe)” (1966). Eretas tirelessly argued for Lithuania’s freedom in his public lectures or articles published in the Western European magazines in foreign languages. Of great importance was his study about the forgotten Balts (1968), about the Baltic nations and their fate (1970) and about the Lithuanian language and its archaic wealth (1971). Eretas did a great service to the ateitininkai organization by writing monographs about Stasys Salkauskis (1960) and Kazys Pakstas (1976). Straipsnyje aptariamos literatūros kanono formavimo pastangos pristatant vienos literatūrinės premijos – Lietuvių literatūros ir tautosakos instituto skelbiamos kūrybiškiausios metų knygos – skyrimo rezultatus. Nuomonių, kas yra gera literatūra ir kaip ją atskirti nuo blogos, kas tai gali ar privalo daryti, esama be galo daug. Kanono sudarymo principai plačiai diskutuojami teoriniu lygmeniu nuo XX amžiaus 9-ojo dešimtmečio, kaip suvokta, jog tiesos monopolis ir galios humanistikoje jau išslydo iš akademinio elito rankų. Vakarų pasaulio akademikai susiskirstė į tradicionalistus, teigiančius, kad kanonas formuojamas atsižvelgiant į vertę ir estetiką, semantinį vientisumą ir atvirumą interpretacijai, ir reliatyvistus, teigiančius, kad kanonas yra kultūrinis artefaktas, socialinio susitarimo reikalas ir paprastai įtakingesnės grupės jį primeta silpnesnėms, todėl kanonas nuolat perrašomas. Vis dėlto manytina, kad sąveika yra abipusė: tradicionalistai suvokia savo „absoliučių“ vertybių sąlyginumą, reliatyvistai sugeba įžvelgti pastovesnių vertybių būtinybę. Kūrybiškiausia knyga išrenkama iš kiekvienais metais instituto mokslininkų suformuojamo kūrybiškiausių knygų dvyliktuko. Nežiūrint kritiško požiūrio į detales, manytina, kad instituto sudaromas dvyliktukas (ne premija) yra pats reikšmingiausias metų literatūros, kaip proceso, įvertinimas. Tai kvalifikuoti ir kolektyviniai sprendimai, atlikti nepriklausomų ekspertų, kasmet perskaitančių šūsnis knygų ir susidarančių gana išsamų literatūros vaizdą. The article describes the literature canon formation efforts when presenting the results of one literature awards – The Most Creative Book of the Year announced by the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore. There is a great number of opinions on what is good literature and how it should be distinguished from bad literature, as well as who could be responsible for that. The principles of the canon formation have been widely discussed from the theoretical point of view from the 9th decade of the 20th century, when it was perceived that the monopoly of truth and power had no longer been the issue analysed exceptionally by the academic elite. Western scientists split into traditionalists claiming that canon is formed with regard to value and aesthetics, semantic coherence and openness for interpretation, and relativists claiming that canon is a cultural artefact – a matter of social agreement, and more prominent groups usually impose it on weaker groups, therefore, canons are usually rewritten. Still, it is presumed that the interaction is mutual: traditionalists perceive the relativity of their “absolute” virtues, and relativists see the necessity for more constant values. The most creative book is selected from 12 most creative books formed by scientists of the institute on the annual basis. Despite the critical attitude towards details, it is assumed that the 12 books selected by the institute (not the award) are the most significant annual evaluation of literature. These are qualified and collective decisions performed by independent experts, who read a great number of books every year and create a rather extensive vision of literature.

Edukologijos tarpdiscipliniškumas ir pakitęs tyrimų pobūdis (glaudus teorijos ir praktikos ryšys) lemia, kad mokslininkai, teoriniu lygmeniu tyrinėjantys aukštojo mokslo problemas, dirba ir praktinį darbą – yra aukštųjų mokyklų dėstytojai, studijų proceso ir mokslinių tyrimų (tarpdisciplininių, tarpuniversitetinių ir tarptautinių) organizatoriai, moksliniai konsultantai, ekspertai. Doktorantūros studijų metu doktorantai atlieka įvairią veiklą: skaito paskaitas, organizuoja tyrimus, dalyvauja konferencijose, pristato tyrimų rezultatus moksliniuose straipsniuose. Šios veiklos metu įgyta patirtis padeda siekti doktorantūroje išsikeltų tikslų ir vykdyti mokslinės veiklos uždavinius. Mokslinė veikla – sudėtinga, susijusi su naujų idėjų generavimu Ir pristatymu, originalių tyrimų planavimu ir atlikimu, dalyvavimu projektuose. Asmuo, pasiekęs aštuntąjį lygmenį, t. y. įgijęs mokslų daktaro kvalifikaciją, geba savarankiškai atlikti veiklą, susijusią su mokymais, tyrimais, konsultavimu, švietimo reiškinių analize ir interpretavimu, projektų valdymu ir vykdymu. Tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad doktorantai geba analizuoti savo mokslinę veiklą, vertinti ir Interpretuoti pasirinktus švietimo reiškinius, taikyti kitų mokslų pasiekimus vykdydami švietimo tyrimus, vertinti švietimo reiškinius profesinės veiklos sistemos kontekste. Šiek tiek sunkiau doktorantams sekasi taikyti aprašomosios statistikos metodus ir statistiškai apdoroti duomenis The interdisciplinary nature and changes in research in the field of education (tight interaction between theory and practice) determines the fact that scientists theoretically studying issues of higher education perform practical work – they are teachers at higher schools, organisers, academic advisors and experts of study processes and scientific research (interdisciplinary, interuniversity and international). During their doctoral studies doctoral students perform various activities: deliver lectures, organise studies, participate in conferences, present study results in scientific articles. The experience obtained when performing these activities allows seeking goals of their doctoral studies and performing scientific objectives. Scientific activities are complex activities related to generation and presentation of new ideas, planning and implementation of original research, participation in projects. A person, having reached the eighth level. i.e. having obtained the degree of a doctor of sciences is able to perform independent activities related to teaching, research, counselling, analysis and interpretation of educational phenomena, project management and implementation. The results of the research indicate that doctoral students are able to analyse their scientific activities, evaluate and interpret educational phenomena, apply achievements of other scientists when performing educational studies, evaluate educational phenomena in the context of the system of professional activities. It is slightly more difficult for doctoral students to apply methods of descriptive statistics and to perform statistical data processing.

Straipsnyje pateikiami Lietuvos mokslininkų socialinių garantijų tyrimo rezultatai. Tyrimo tikslas - atskleisti pagrindines socialines garantijas, kurios svarbios mokslininkams dabartiniame mokslininko profesijos raidos etape. Naudojami tyrimo metodai - pakartotinė statistinių duomenų analizė ir mokslininkų apklausa. Tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad mokslininkams svarbiausios socialinės garantijos yra darbo užmokestis, mokslininko pensija, darbo sutarties trukmė. Viena aktualiausių problemų yra darbo užmokestis, kadangi, augant mokslininko patirčiai ir karjerai, jis adekvačiai nedidėja. Mokslininko pensija, finansuojama iš valstybės biudžeto, yra labiausiai vertinama mokslininkų socialinė garantija ir laikoma socialiai teisinga. Tuo tarpu terminuotos darbo sutartys penkerių metų kadencijai sukelia stresą ir nesaugumo jausmą ir yra vertinamos kaip vienas iš trukdžių siekti aukštesnės mokslo bei studijų kokybės. This paper is aimed to report the results of a research on social guarantees for academics in Lithuania. Two main approaches were used: secondary analysis of statistical data and the questioning of academics. Results of the research have shown that the most important social guarantees for Lithuanian academics are salaries, pensions and time hire labour contracts. The salary of Lithuanian academics is one of the lowest in the European Union, and its growth depending on experience and career is not sufficient. A special public pension for academics in Lithuania (financed from the state budget) is desirable and seems socially just to the researchers. However, time hire labour contracts are the obstacles for the quality of science and studies as well as the factors of stress and insecurity.

Straipsnyje aptariama Lietuvos socialinės ekonominės (visuomeninės) statistikos teorijos ir praktikos raida (1918-1940 m.). Mėginama pažvelgti į administracinę statistiką kaip atskirą instituciją, apibūdinti jos ištakas, intelektinį brendimą, išryškinti teorines žinias, kuriomis naudojosi statistikos tarnybų specialistai. Tarpukario Lietuvos statistikos institucijų veikla nagrinėjama ją siejant su šalies statistinės minties raida, ūkiniu ir ekonominiu gyvenimu. Straipsnyje susisteminti autoriaus anksčiau atliktų tyrinėjimų rezultatai ir išvados, pamėginta labiau išryškinti statistikos ir visuomenės sąveiką, gyventą laikmetį, apibūdinta Centralinio statistikos biuro veikla, jo darbo tikslai, institucijos kūrimosi etapai. Centralinis statistikos biuras buvo vienintelė institucija, pajėgi sistemingai ir reguliariai rinkti ir apdoroti informaciją apie kultūrą, ekonomiką, politiką; sisteminti duomenis tokiais visuomenei opiais klausimais, kaip gyventojų migracijos dėsningumai, pajamų ir turto pasiskirstymas šalyje. Pagrindinė statistinės veiklos plėtros kreivė buvo nuolatinis, bet negreitas statistinių tyrimų tobulėjimas, jų artėjimas prie tuometinių Vakarų Europos šalių stebėjimo, medžiagos apdorojimo ir įvedimo, statistinės analizės standartų. Greitesniam šalies statistinio darbo tobulėjimui trukdė silpnas finansavimas, silpna techninė įranga. Administracinis statistikos darbo organizavimas nuolat vystėsi centralizacijos linkme. Statistikos teorija mažai rėmėsi tikimybiniais skaičiavimais, matematinės analizės metodais, mažai buvo taikomi imčių metodai duomenims rinkti. The article discusses the development of Lithuanian social and economic (public) statics theory and practice in 1918–1940. The author endeavours to analyse administrative statistics as a separate institution, to define its origin, intellectual maturity, as well as to highlight theoretical knowledge used by specialists of statistical services. Activities of interwar Lithuanian statistic institutions are analysed by relating them to the development of national thought, economy and economic life. The article systemises results and conclusions of the research previously performed by the author and endeavours to highlight the interaction between statistics and society, the then period, and to define activities of the Central Bureau of Statistics, its objectives and establishment stages. The Central Bureau of Statistics was the only institution able to systemically and regularly collect and process information about culture, economy, politics; to systemise data on such relevant issues as population migration regularity, distribution of revenues and assets in the country. The main direction in the development of statistical activities was a constant yet slow improvement of statistical research and adjustment thereof to the then European standards of monitoring, material processing and introduction and statistical analysis. A more rapid development of statistical work in the country was impeded by poor financing and technical equipment. Administrational organisation of statistical work was constantly developed towards centralisation. The theory of statistics was barely grounded on probability calculations, methods of mathematical analysis, and sample methods were rarely applied for data collection.

Šiame straipsnyje analizuojama socialinės gerovės garantijų1 svarba mokslininko profesijos pasirinkimui, kadangi, remiantis gerovės kapitalizmo prieiga, socialinės gerovės garantijos gali būti traktuojamos kaip svarbi priemonė, užtikrinanti mokslo sferos aprūpinimą ar papildymą kvalifikuota darbo jėga. Empirinėje straipsnio dalyje remiamasi 2008 m. atlikta Lietuvos doktorantų anketine apklausa2, skirta išsiaiškinti doktorantų požiūrį į jiems teikiamas ar reikalingas socialines garantijas, duomenimis. In the welfare capitalism approach, social guarantees may be treated as a significant means of ensuring the supply of qualified working force. The empirical part of the study is based on the results of PhD students' survey performed in order to ascertain their opinion about the social guarantees that are currently being provided or needed. The results have shown that the PhD students are not satisfied with the current social financial support. The status of a PhD student does not provide social guarantees as the status of an employee does. Sickness and maternity (paternity) social insurance is central to PhD students. In their opinion, their scholarship is rather small and does not ensure proper living standards. Thus, the decreased attractiveness of PhD studies among young people and the resulting decline in the supply of qualified working force might be anticipated in the near future as the social guarantees are not sufficient and the prospects for new PhDs to be employed in the academic field remain rather vague.

Šiuolaikinis pasaulis, vadinamas vėlyvąja modernybe (Giddens, 2000), refleksyviąja modernybe bei postmodernumu, pasižymi nesaugumu, netikrumu, neprognozuojamumu, atskirtimi. Ekonomikoje netikrumą, nesaugumą sąlygoja nacionalinių ekonomikų tarpusavio priklausomybė ir politinės priemonės, kuriomis siekiama išlaikyti konkurencingumą ir taip išgyventi, todėl iššūkių švietimo sistemoms daugėja. Trečiosios pakopos (doktorantūros) studijoms taip pat keliami nauji reikalavimai. Nagrinėjant Europos dokumentus, teigiama, kad pagrindinis doktorantų programų elementas ir toliau išlieka tyrinėjimais pagrįsta mokslo pažanga, tačiau pabrėžiama, kad doktorantų rengimas turi atitikti rinkos poreikius, kurie yra platesni už universiteto, kadangi jaunajam mokslininkui reikalingos ne tik tyrimų kompetencijos, bet taip pat svarbu įgyti ir perkeliamųjų įgūdžių. Doktoranto, kaip mokslininko, kvalifikacija - tai aukščiausio (aštuntojo) lygmens kvalifikacija, atskleidžiama gebėjimu ne tik tinkamai panaudoti turimas žinias, bet ir varijuoti jomis sudėtingose situacijose, gebėti planuoti bei įgyvendinti sudėtingus projektus, įvertinant tai, kad žinios nuolatos kinta. Kaip įrodymą, kad šis lygmuo pasiektas, doktorantas privalo pademonstruoti plataus profilio gebėjimus, matomus doktorantūros studijų pabaigoje, pristatydamas tiriamojo darbo rezultatus - disertaciją; vertinant tiriamąjį darbą atsižvelgiama į gebėjimą atskleisti problemos sudėtingumą, parengti tyrimo projektą bei jį įgyvendinti pasirenkant tinkamus tyrimo metodus, interpretuoti tyrimo rezultatus, pateikti atitinkamas išvadas parengiant sklaidai gautus rezultatus. The contemporary world, also referred to as late modernity, reflexive modernity and post-modernity, is characterized by insecurity, falseness, unpredictability and marginalisation. In economics, falseness and insecurity are caused by interdependence of national economies and political measures that are being utilized in order to sustain competition and hence survive; and therefore systems of education face new challenges. Third level studies also are exposed to new requirements. The analysis of the European documents makes it evident that the major component of doctoral programmes has been research based advancement of science; however, it has been emphasised that preparation of doctoral students should meet market demands which are broader than university demands as a young researcher needs to acquire transferable skills together with research competencies. Doctoral student's as researcher's qualification is the highest level qualification, it manifests itself in the ability to use the acquired knowledge properly in various complex situations, to be able to plan and implement complicated projects taking into account the changing nature of knowledge. As the evidence of the achievement of the highest level, a doctoral student must demonstrate broad range skills at the end of the doctoral studies, presenting the outcomes of the research work, i.e. the dissertation; the assessment of the research work takes into account the doctoral student's ability to reveal the complexity of the research problem, to prepare research design and implement it, choosing appropriate research methods, to interpret the research findings and present proper research conclusions preparing the research findings for dissemination. The modern world, also referred to as the late modernity (Giddens, 2000), reflexive modernity and postmodernism characterizes with insecurity, instability, unpredictability and divide. The insecurity and instability in economics result from the interdependence of national economies and the political tools, used for safeguarding the competitive abilities in order to survive therefore the amount of challenges for educational systems has been increasing. New requirements are also raised for the third-degree (post-graduate) studies. The European documents state that the main element of post-graduate programmes remains the research based scientific progress however it is emphasized that post-graduates’ preparation should correspond to the market needs, which are broader than those of the university, since a young researcher needs both the researching competence and the transference skills. The qualification of a post-graduate as a researcher is one of the highest levels (the eight), revealed by his/her ability to not only appropriately use the available knowledge, but also to vary it in complicated situations and be able to plan and implement complex projects, taking into consideration that information is constantly changing. As proof that the level has been reached, a post-graduate, at the end of the post-graduate studies, must demonstrate broad abilities, by presenting the results of his/her research, i. e. a dissertation; when evaluating the research the ability to reveal the complexity of the problem, prepare and implement a researching project by selecting the appropriate studying methods, interpret the results of the research and present the corresponding conclusions by preparing the obtained results for dissemination are taken into consideration.
