1. Competing itinerant and local spin interactions in kagome metal FeGe

Abstract

Two-dimensional kagome metals consisting of corner-sharing triangles offer a unique platform for studying strong electron correlations and band topology due to its geometrically frustrated lattice structure. The similar energy scales between spin, lattice, and electronic degrees of freedom in these systems give rise to competing quantum phases such as charge density wave (CDW), magnetic order, and superconductivity. For example, kagome metal FeGe first exhibits A-type collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at T_N ~ 400 K, then establishes a CDW phase coupled with AFM ordered moment below T_CDW ~ 100 K, and finally forms a $c$-axis double cone AFM structure around T_Canting ~ 60 K. Here we use neutron scattering to demonstrate the presence of gapless incommensurate spin excitations associated with the double cone AFM structure at temperatures well above T_Canting and T_CDW that merge into gapped commensurate spin waves from the A-type AFM order. While commensurate spin waves follow the Bose population factor and can be well described by a local moment Heisenberg Hamiltonian, the incommensurate spin excitations first appear below T_N where AFM order is commensurate, start to deviate from the Bose population factor around T_CDW, and peaks at T_Canting, consistent with a critical scattering of a second order magnetic phase transition, as a function of decreasing temperature. By comparing these results with density functional theory calculations, we conclude that the incommensurate magnetic structure arises from the nested Fermi surfaces of itinerant electrons and the formation of a spin density wave order. The temperature dependence of the incommensurate spin excitations suggests a coupling between spin density wave and CDW order, likely due to flat electronic bands near the Fermi level around T_N and associated electron correlation effects., Comment: Submitted for publication in April 2023

Abstract

Bulk glasses exhibit extra vibrational modes at low energies, known as the boson peak. The microscopic dynamics in nanoscale alumina impact the performance of qubits and other superconducting devices, however the existence of the boson peak in these glasses has not been previously measured. Here we report neutron spectroscopy on Al/Al$_2$O$_{3-x}$ nanoparticles consisting of spherical metallic cores from 20 to 1000 nm surrounded by a 3.5 nm thick alumina glass. An intense low-energy peak is observed at $\omega_{BP}$ = 2.8 $\pm$ 0.6 meV for highly oxidised particles, concurrent with an excess in the density of states. The intensity of the peak scales inversely with particle size and oxide fraction indicating a surface origin, and is red-shifted by 3 meV with respect to the van-Hove singularity of $\gamma$-phase Al$_2$O$_{3-x}$ nanocrystals. Molecular dynamics simulations of $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_{3-x}$, $\gamma$-Al$_2$O$_{3-x}$ and a-Al$_2$O$_{3-x}$ show that the observed boson peak is a signature of the ultrathin glass surface, and the frequency is softened compared to that of the hypothetical bulk glass., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures [main manuscript] + supplemental

Abstract

The stability of charge ordered phases is doping dependent, with different materials having particularly stable ordered phases. In the half filled charge ordered phases of the cuprates this occurs at one eighth doping, whereas in charge-stripe ordered La2-xSrxNiO4+delta there is enhanced stability at one third doping. Abstract

Fedotovite K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$ is a candidate of new quantum spin systems, in which the edge-shared tetrahedral (EST) spin-clusters consisting of Cu$^{2+}$ are connected by weak inter-cluster couplings to from one-dimensional array. Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of an effective $S$ = 1 Haldane state below $T \cong 4$ K. Rigorous theoretical studies provide an insight into the magnetic state of K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$: an EST cluster makes a triplet in the ground state and one-dimensional chain of the EST induces a cluster-based Haldane state. We predict that the cluster-based Haldene state emerges whenever the number of tetrahedra in the EST is $even$.

Abstract

Here we present inelastic neutron scattering measurements from the frustrated, quantum spin-1/2 chain material linarite, PbCuSO_4(OH)_2. Time of flight data, taken at 0.5K and zero applied magnetic field reveals low-energy dispersive spin wave excitations below 1.5meV both parallel and perpendicular to the Cu-chain direction. From this we confirm that the interchain couplings within linarite are around 10% of the nearest neighbour intrachain interactions. We analyse the data within both linear spin-wave theory and density matrix renormalisation group theories and establish the main magnetic exchange interactions and the simplest realistic Hamiltonian for this material.

Abstract

We study low energy excitations in the quantum breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$ by combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and thermodynamical properties measurements. The INS spectra are quantitatively explained by spin-1/2 single-tetrahedron model having $XXZ$ anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This model has a two-fold degeneracy of the lowest-energy state per tetrahedron and well reproduces the magnetization curve at 0.5 K and heat capacity above 1.5 K. At lower temperatures, however, we observe a broad maximum in the heat capacity around 63 mK, demonstrating that a unique quantum ground state is selected due to extra perturbations with energy scale smaller than the instrumental resolution of INS., Comment: 5 pages 3 figures, Phys. Abstract

The low energy magnetic excitation spectrum of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO4, x = 0.4 and x = 0.45 samples were studied by neutron scattering. Two excitation modes are observed in both materials, one from the ordered magnetic moments, and a second mode consistent with pseudo-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic excitations of the charge stripe electrons (q-1D). The dispersion of the q-1D excitation follows the same relation as in x = 1/3 composition, with even spectral weight in the two counter-propagating branches of the x = 0.4 sample, however in the $x = 0.45$ sample only one dispersion branch has any measurable spectral weight. Abstract

A neutron scattering investigation of the magnetoelectric coupling in PbFe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2}O_{3} (PFN) has been undertaken. Ferroelectric order occurs below 400 K, as evidenced by the softening with temperature and subsequent recovery of the zone center transverse optic phonon mode energy (\hbar \Omega_{0}). Over the same temperature range, magnetic correlations become resolution limited on a terahertz energy scale. In contrast to the behavior of nonmagnetic disordered ferroelectrics (namely Pb(Mg,Zn)_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_{3}), we report the observation of a strong deviation from linearity in the temperature dependence of (\hbar \Omega_{0})^{2}. This deviation is compensated by a corresponding change in the energy scale of the magnetic excitations, as probed through the first moment of the inelastic response. The coupling between the short-range ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic correlations is consistent with calculations showing that the ferroelectricity is driven by the displacement of the body centered iron site, illustrating the multiferroic nature of magnetic lead based relaxors in the dynamical regime., Comment: (8 pages, 5 figures, Physical Review B 88, 094105 (2013))

Abstract

The magnetic excitation spectrums of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 were studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We found the magnetic excitation spectrum of x = 0.45 from the ordered Ni^2+ S = 1 spins to match that of checkerboard charge ordered La(1.5)Sr(0.5)NiO(4). The distinctive asymmetry in the magnetic excitations above 40 meV was observed for both doping levels, but an additional ferromagnetic mode was observed in x = 0.45 and not in the x = 0.4. Abstract

There exists increasing evidence that the phase diagram of the high-transition temperature (Tc) cuprate superconductors is controlled by a quantum critical point. One distinct theoretical proposal is that, with decreasing hole-carrier concentration, a transition occurs to an ordered state with two circulating orbital currents per CuO2 square. Below the 'pseudogap' temperature T* (T* > Tc), the theory predicts a discrete order parameter and two weakly-dispersive magnetic excitations in structurally simple compounds that should be measurable by neutron scattering. Indeed, novel magnetic order and one such excitation were recently observed. Here, we demonstrate for tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+d the existence of a second excitation with local character, consistent with the theory. The excitations mix with conventional antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which points toward a unifying picture of magnetism in the cuprates that will likely require a multi-band description., Comment: Including supplementary information

Abstract

We present an inelastic neutron scattering study of the structurally simple single-layer compound HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+\delta}$ close to optimal doping ($T_c \approx 96$ K). A well-defined antiferromagnetic resonance with energy $\omega_r = 56$ meV ($\approx 6.8 k_BT_c$) is observed below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. The resonance mode is energy-resolution limited and exhibits an intrinsic momentum width of about $0.2 \mathrm{\mathring{A}^{-1}}$, consistent with prior work on several other cuprates. However, the unusually large value of the mode energy implies a non-universal relationship between $\omega_r$ and $T_c$ across different families of cuprates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering for Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+\delta}$ near optimal doping ($x \approx 0.155$, $T_{c} = 25 \mathrm{K}$) reveals that the dynamic magnetic susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic zone center exhibits two characteristic energies in the superconducting state: $\omega_1 \approx 6.4 \mathrm{meV}$ and $\omega_2 \approx 4.5 \mathrm{meV}$. These two magnetic energies agree $quantitatively$ with the $B_{1g}$ / $B_{2g}$ and $A_{1g}$ features previously observed in electronic Raman scattering, where the former is believed to indicate the maximum electronic gap and the origin of the smaller $A_{1g}$ feature has remained unexplained. The susceptibility change upon cooling into the superconducting state is inconsistent with previous claims of the existence of a magnetic resonance mode near 10 meV, but consistent with a resonance at $\omega_2$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Purpose Therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer (PCa) have been evolving dramatically worldwide. The current article reports on the evolution of surgical management strategies for PCa in Italy. Methods The data from two independent Italian multicenter projects, the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA (started in 2007, holding data of 890 patients) and the Pros-IT-CNR project (started in 2014, with data of 692 patients), were compared. Differences in patients' characteristics were evaluated. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify characteristics associated with robot-assisted (RA) procedure, nerve sparing (NS) approach, and lymph node dissection (LND). Results The two cohorts did not differ in terms of age and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels at biopsy. Patients enrolled in the Pros-IT-CNR project more frequently were submitted to RA (58.8% vs 27.6%,p < 0.001) and NS prostatectomy (58.4% vs. 52.9%,p = 0.04), but received LND less frequently (47.7% vs. 76.7%,p < 0.001), as compared to the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA patients. At multivariate logistic models, Lower Gleason Scores (GS) and PSA levels were significantly associated with RA prostatectomy in both cohorts. As for the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA data, clinical T-stage was a predictor for NS (OR = 0.07 for T3, T4) and LND (OR = 2.41 for T2) procedures. As for Pros-IT CNR data, GS >= (4 + 3) and positive cancer cores >= 50% were decisive factors both for NS (OR 0.29 and 0.30) and LND (OR 7.53 and 2.31) strategies. Conclusions PCa management has changed over the last decade in Italian centers: RA and NS procedures without LND have become the methods of choice to treat newly medium-high risk diagnosed PCa.

Abstract

Background There are several treatments available to newly diagnosed prostate cancer (PCA) patients. Although surgery and radiotherapy (RT) with or without androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are widely adopted treatment options for localized PCA together with active surveillance (AS), there is no consensus nor randomised trials on treatment selection, prospective quality of life (QOL), along with toxicity outcomes and according to treatment modality in the Italian population. The current study aimed to describe clinical-therapeutic features and QOL at PCA diagnosis, according to different treatment patterns in a large prospective, Italian population, enrolled in the Pros-IT CNR study. Methods The Pros-IT CNR is an on-going national, multicenter, observational, prospective study on patients affected by PCA who have been referred by 97 Italian Urology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology facilities participating in the project. The possible relationships between the treatment patterns reported in the 6 month follow-up case report form and patients’ features at diagnosis were evaluated using exploratory multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and other data analysis method. Results At diagnosis, surgery and AS patients were significantly younger, had fewer comorbidities, lower PSA levels and Gleason Score (GS) values; they were also diagnosed at an earlier stage of disease with respect to the RT or ADT patients who showed significantly worse QoL scores at the time of diagnosis. Conclusions An analysis of the data collected at baseline and 6 months later uncovered substantial differences in ages, comorbidities, clinical and QOL features in the various treatment groups. These findings do not fully reflect the current PCA treatment guidelines and suggest the need for a multidisciplinary consensus guideline to ameliorate both the counselling and treatments of PCA patients.

Abstract

Background: To report health-related quality of life outcomes as assessed by validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after radical prostatectomy (RP).-Methods: This study analyzed patients treated with RP within The PROState cancer monitoring in Italy, from the National Research Council (Pros-IT CNR). Italian versions of Short-Form Heath Survey and university of California los Angeles-prostate cancer index questionnaires were administered. PROMs were physical composite scores, mental composite scores and urinary, bowel, sexual functions and bothers (UF/B, BF/B, SF/B). Baseline unbalances were controlled with propensity scores and stabilized inverse weights; differences in PROMs between different RP approaches were estimated by mixed models. Results: Of 541 patients treated with RP, 115 (21%) received open RP (ORP), 90 (17%) laparoscopic RP (LRP) and 336 (61%) robot-assisted RP (RARP). At head-to-head-comparisons, RARP showed higher 12-month UF vs. LRP (interaction treatment ∗ time p = 0.03) and 6-month SF vs. ORP (p < 0.001). At 12-month from surgery, 67, 73 and 79% of patients used no pad for urinary loss in ORP, LRP and RARP respectively (no differences for each comparison). Conversely, 16, 27 and 40% of patients declared erections firm enough for sexual intercourse in ORP, LRP and RARP respectively (only significant difference for ORP vs. RARP, p = 0.0004). Conclusions: Different RP approaches lead to significant variations in urinary and sexual PROMs, with a general trend in favour of RARP. However, their clinical significance seems limited.

Abstract

Background There are several treatments available to newly diagnosed prostate cancer (PCA) patients. Although surgery and radiotherapy (RT) with or without androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are widely adopted treatment options for localized PCA together with active surveillance (AS), there is no consensus nor randomised trials on treatment selection, prospective quality of life (QOL), along with toxicity outcomes and according to treatment modality in the Italian population. The current study aimed to describe clinical-therapeutic features and QOL at PCA diagnosis, according to different treatment patterns in a large prospective, Italian population, enrolled in the Pros-IT CNR study. Methods The Pros-IT CNR is an on-going national, multicenter, observational, prospective study on patients affected by PCA who have been referred by 97 Italian Urology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology facilities participating in the project. The possible relationships between the treatment patterns reported in the 6 month follow-up case report form and patients' features at diagnosis were evaluated using exploratory multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and other data analysis method. Results At diagnosis, surgery and AS patients were significantly younger, had fewer comorbidities, lower PSA levels and Gleason Score (GS) values; they were also diagnosed at an earlier stage of disease with respect to the RT or ADT patients who showed significantly worse QoL scores at the time of diagnosis. Conclusions An analysis of the data collected at baseline and 6 months later uncovered substantial differences in ages, comorbidities, clinical and QOL features in the various treatment groups. These findings do not fully reflect the current PCA treatment guidelines and suggest the need for a multidisciplinary consensus guideline to ameliorate both the counselling and treatments of PCA patients.

Abstract

Radiotherapy (RT) represents an important therapeutic option for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. The aim of the current study is to examine trajectories in patients’ reported quality of life (QoL) aspects related to bowel function and bother, considering data from the PROState cancer monitoring in ITaly from the National Research Council (Pros-IT CNR) study, analyzed with growth mixture models. Data for patients who underwent RT, either associated or not associated with androgen deprivation therapy, were considered. QoL outcomes were assessed over a 2-year period from the diagnosis, using the Italian version of the University of California Los Angeles-Prostate Cancer Index (Italian-UCLA-PCI). Three trajectories were identified for the bowel function, having three or more comorbidities and the use of 3D-CRT technique for RT were associated with the worst trajectory (OR = 3.80, 95% CI 2.04–7.08, OR = 2.17, 95% CI 1.22–3.87, respectively). Two trajectories were identified for the bowel bother scores, diabetes and the non-Image guided RT method were associated with being in the worst bowel bother trajectory group (OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.06–2.67, OR = 2.57, 95% CI 1.70–3.86, respectively). The findings from this study suggest that the absence of comorbidities and the use of intensity modulated RT techniques with image guidance are related with a better tolerance to RT in terms of bowel side effects.

Abstract

When charge-stripe order was discovered in a non-superconducting La-based cuprate, it was compared to the charge-stripe order of insulating non-superconducting La2−xSrxNiO4+δ (LSNO)1. Since this discovery, the La-based cuprates have often been compared and contrasted to issostructural charge ordered materials in order to gain insights for our understanding of high temperature cuprate superconductivity. The striking discovery of the near universal hourglass shaped magnetic excitation spectrum of the hole doped cuprates however brought into question the relevance of understanding charge-stripe ordered LSNO, whose magnetic excitation spectrum are the typical spin wave cone shape of an antiferromagnet2–4. That was until the recent discovery of a highly similar hourglass shaped magnetic excitation spectrum in the insulating non-superconducting charge ordered cobaltite material La2−xSrxCoO4+δ (LSCoO)5. As LSNO has a single charge-stripe ordered phase below half doping, it is a simpler material to study than La2−xSrxCoO4+δ (LSCoO) which appears to phase separate into different charge ordered phases6–9. Recently, a striking observation was reported on the magnetism in La2CuO4+δ (LCO+O). On going towards zero energy transfer the magnetic excitations were observed to have a different wave vector centring compared to the magnetic Bragg reflections10, an offset. The magnetic excitations are not acting as Goldstone modes of a symmetry breaking magnetic order, which would have the same wave vector centring at lowest energy, that they were thought to be. As La-based cuprates are known not to fully magnetically order11,12, the offset of the magnetic excitations in LCO+O was attributed to the lowest energy magnetic excitations occurring in unordered magnetic volume of the material, instead of the magnetically ordered volume of the material10. Abstract

The low-energy magnetic excitation from the highly Ca-doped quasi-one-dimensional magnet SrCa13Cu24O41 was studied in the magnetic ordered state by using inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the gapless spin-wave excitation, dispersive along the a and c axes but nondispersive along the b axis. Such excitations are attributed to the spin wave from the spin-chain sublattice. Model fitting to the experimental data gives the nearest-neighbor interaction Jc as 5.4 meV and the interchain interaction Ja=4.4meV. Jc is antiferromagnetic and its value is close to the nearest-neighbor interactions of the similar edge-sharing spin-chain systems such as CuGeO3. Comparing with the hole-doped spin chains in Sr14Cu24O41, which shows a spin gap due to spin dimers formed around Zhang-Rice singlets, the chains in SrCa13Cu24O41 show a gapless excitation in this paper. We ascribe such a change from gapped to gapless excitations to holes transferring away from the chain sublattice into the ladder sublattice upon Ca doping.

Abstract

Background: The National Research Council (CNR) prostate cancer monitoring project in Italy (Pros-IT CNR) is an observational, prospective, ongoing, multicentre study aiming to monitor a sample of Italian males diagnosed as new cases of prostate cancer. The present study aims to present data on the quality of life at time prostate cancer is diagnosed. Methods: One thousand seven hundred five patients were enrolled. Quality of life is evaluated at the time cancer was diagnosed and at subsequent assessments via the Italian version of the University of California Los Angeles-Prostate Cancer Index (UCLA-PCI) and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). Results: At diagnosis, lower scores on the physical component of the SF-12 were associated to older ages, obesity and the presence of 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities. Lower scores on the mental component were associated to younger ages, the presence of 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities and a T-score higher than one. Urinary and bowel functions according to UCLA-PCI were generally good. Almost 5% of the sample reported using at least one safety pad daily to control urinary loss; less than 3% reported moderate/severe problems attributable to bowel functions, and sexual function was a moderate/severe problem for 26.7%. Diabetes, 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities, T2 or T3-T4 categories and a Gleason score of eight or more were significantly associated with lower sexual function scores at diagnosis. Conclusions: Data collected by the Pros-IT CNR study have clarified the baseline status of newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. A comprehensive assessment of quality of life will allow to objectively evaluate outcomes of different profile of care.
