The Dual Mesh Control Domain Method (DMCDM), developed by Reddy (J.N. Reddy. "A dual mesh finite domain method for the numerical solution of differential equations." Int J Comput Methods Eng Sci,20(3):212–228, 2019), is an alternative to the classical weak‐form Galerkin finite element method. An advantage of DMCDM is that it combines the interpolation capabilities of the finite element method with the direct use of an integral form of the balance laws. Furthermore, it is easily extensible to mixed formulations, resulting in simpler than traditional finite element formulations. In this work, we extend DMCDM to the fully finite strain case with plasticity. We introduce a new discretization algorithm for finite strain problems, which includes a mean‐dilatation technique to solve the volumetric locking problem. Assessment is supported by five linear and five finite strain benchmark problems, one of them being 3D. Finite strain solutions were found to be stable, exempt from hourglassing, and also locking‐free. This work focuses on panel flutter and active control in supersonic variable stiffness composite laminates, making progress on the analytical modeling and combined exploration of curvilinear fiber composites tailoring and piezoelectric sensors/actuators, as promising structural design technologies, for aeroelastic control. The Classical Laminated Plate Theory and the First-Order Piston Theory are used as structural and aerodynamic models, respectively. Flutter analyses are carried out for simply supported plates, either purely elastic laminates or piezoelectric composite laminates. The tailor-ability of curvilinear fiber composites and the effect of proportional control are discussed. Ultimately, the presented results provide a comprehensive benchmark for future assessments. In light of the limited number of available literature on Abaqus user-elements implementation, this work presents two layerwise electro-elastic user-elements for static and free vibration analysis of piezoelectric composite plates. Three discrete layers are considered, each one described by a first-order shear deformation displacement field along with a linear or quadratic z-expansion of the electric potential. The models predictive capabilities are assessed by a comparison with three-dimensional exact solutions for simply supported plates. Numerical results demonstrate an advantage of the electric potential quadratic z-expansion for static analysis, with negligible improvements on the evaluation of the first 12 natural frequencies. This article is devoted to the study of the optimal design of fibers orientation in a composite specimen with the objective to minimize the displacement. The composite specimen considered is within the scope of aerospace and mechanical applications. The objective function associated with the composite design is computed based on a static analysis of a finite element solid model, which allows one to define (or control) the fibers orientation. The recent global and local optimization using direct search methods (GLODS) is used for the optimization process. To validate and compare the numerical and optimized results, the specimens were manufactured and tested experimentally. The orientation of the layers that minimize the maximum displacement is achieved through the computational interaction of the optimization program, GLODS, in loop with the finite element program, ANSYS. It is shown that the optimized lamination schemes found by GLODS minimized about 60% of the displacement compared to the nonoptimized specimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
