The schematic and analysis of a voltage-fed resonant inverter are presented in this paper. The topology of the inverter allows operation of the resonant tank at higher harmonics and multiples of the switching frequency. The resulting loss in voltage gain is compensated through the use of multiple commutation poles employing low-cost modestly rated MOSFETs. The proposed topology can control power throughput at a fixed frequency through pole phase-shift modulation. Zero voltage switching is maintained down to no load and within the entire input voltage range. Measurements from a multimegahertz 100-W inverter confirm the theoretical predictions, as well as the suggested design and control approach. The gate driver presented here allows the operation of a half-bridge resonant inverter at 13.56 MHz using standard package switching devices. Similar to other sinusoidal drivers, it inherently provides dead time between conduction of the power devices and consumes relatively low power with respect to square wave drivers. One advantage of the presented topology is that it exhibits high tolerance of the Miller effect of the driven devices and can therefore drive high capacitance, low-cost MOSFETs at radio frequencies. Another advantage of this driver is that it uses modestly rated devices. The concepts developed in this paper are demonstrated with two 13.56 MHz, 300 W/500 W prototype inverters with efficiencies above 85%. Index Terms--Driver, inverter, MOSFET, RF.

The powering of human implants via inductive coupling has been an object of interest for the past two decades. This paper discusses some of the issues concerning a distant energy link used for supplying artificial human implants, operating at the frequency of 13.56 MHz. A procedure for the design of an energy-receiving coil is given for general applications. A design procedure is also developed, with focus on coils used for supplying human implants. The correctness of the analysis of this later design procedure has been verified by experimental results. Measurements with a human tissue simulant also show little deviation from the predictions. Fundamental frequency techniques are used to analyze the series-parallel resonant converter under heavy load conditions, both with a continuous, but distorted parallel capacitor voltage waveform, and with a discontinuous capacitor voltage waveform. The analysis is validated with results from an experimental prototype. The application of the technique to the parallel-loaded L-C resonant converter is also considered. Fundamental frequency analysis is used to examine the LCC series-parallel loaded resonant converter with a capacitive output filter when operating as a high-power-factor rectifier. Optimum values are identified for the Q factor and voltage conversion ratio such that zero-voltage switching is just maintained, while minimizing the resonant circuit conduction losses. A simple resonant current control loop is shown to provide an effective mechanism of active control, achieving a high-quality input current waveform over a wide load range. A new 3-D power module dedicated to SiC mosfet is presented. It is based on printed circuit board embedded die technology and is compared with a standard power module. After considering the characteristics that contribute to optimal switching performances from the packaging point of view, both modules are characterized in terms of switching behavior and electromagnetic interference emissions. The results show better performances of the 3-D embedded die module with stray inductances below 2 nH and two times less common mode noise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multilevel flying-capacitor boost converter was analyzed for asymmetric voltage operation—this permits loss optimization that takes advantage of different voltage class MOSFETs. A cost-motivated design of a suitable zero-voltage zero-current switching snubber is then developed that permits a great reduction of the inductor size. With the proposed snubber, synchronous rectification operation is compared to that of diode boost, with a particular attention to the contribution of nonlinear MOSFET parasitics. Experimental results from a 2-kW/30-kHz prototype justify the effectiveness of this solution with a conversion efficiency around $99\% \pm 0.1\%$ for a wide load range. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article presents the design of a domestic, radiofrequency induction charger for implants toward compliance with the Federal Communications Commission safety and electromagnetic compatibility regulations. The suggested arrangement does not impose any patient compliance requirements other than the use of a designated bed for night sleep, and therefore can find a domestic use. The method can be applied to a number of applications; a rechargeable pacemaker is considered as a case study. The presented work has proven that it is possible to realize a fully compliant inductive charging system with minimal patient interaction, and has generated important information for consideration by the designers of inductive charging systems. Experimental results have verified the validity of the theoretical findings.
