In this work, we report on modelling results obtained with our recently developed simulation tool enabling nanoscopic description of electronic processes in X-ray irradiated ferromagnetic materials. With this tool, we have studied the response of Co/Pt multilayer system irradiated by an ultrafast extreme ultraviolet pulse at the M-edge of Co (photon energy $\sim$ 60 eV). It was previously investigated experimentally at the FERMI free-electron-laser facility, using the magnetic small-angle X-ray scattering technique. Our simulations show that the magnetic scattering signal from cobalt decreases on femtosecond timescales due to electronic excitation, relaxation and transport processes both in the cobalt and in the platinum layers, following the trend observed in the experimental data. The confirmation of the predominant role of electronic processes for X-ray induced demagnetization in the regime below the structural damage threshold is a step towards quantitative control and manipulation of X-ray induced magnetic processes on femtosecond timescales., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures; minor changes. Magnetic nanoparticles such as FePt in the L10-phase are the bedrock of our current data storage technology. As the grains become smaller to keep up with technological demands, the superparamagnetic limit calls for materials with higher magneto-crystalline anisotropy. This in turn reduces the magnetic exchange length to just a few nanometers enabling magnetic structures to be induced within the nanoparticles. Here we describe the existence of spin-wave solitons, dynamic localized bound states of spin-wave excitations, in FePt nanoparticles. We show with time-resolved X-ray diffraction and micromagnetic modeling that spin-wave solitons of sub-10 nm sizes form out of the demagnetized state following femtosecond laser excitation. We use time-resolved momentum microscopy at a free-electron laser (FEL) and extend orbital tomography into the time domain to image the electronic wave functions of excited molecular orbitals. This technique provides unprecedented insight into the ultrafast interplay between structural and electronic dynamics. In this work we prove general applicability and establish the experimental conditions at FEL sources to minimize space charge effects and radiation damage. We investigate a bilayer pentacene film on Ag(110) by optical laser pump and FEL probe experiments. From the momentum microscopy signal, we obtain time-dependent momentum maps of the excited-state dynamics of both pentacene layers separately. Combining experimental observations with a theoretical study, we interpret the observed signal for the bottom layer as resulting from the charge redistribution between the molecule and the substrate induced by excitation. We identify that the dynamics of the top pentacene layer resembles excited-state molecular dynamics., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The spin transition in LaCoO$_3$ has been investigated within the density-functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory formalism using continuous time quantum Monte Carlo. Calculations on the experimental rhombohedral atomic structure with two Co sites per unit cell show that an independent treatment of the Co atoms results in a ground state with strong charge fluctuations induced by electronic correlations. Each atom shows a contribution from either a $d^5$ or a $d^7$ state in addition to the main $d^6$ state. These states play a relevant role in the spin transition which can be understood as a low spin-high spin (LS-HS) transition with significant contributions ($\sim$ $10$ %) to the LS and HS states of $d^5$ and $d^7$ states respectively. A thermodynamic analysis reveals a significant kinetic energy gain through introduction of charge fluctuations, which in addition to the potential energy reduction lowers the total energy of the system., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

By studying quark ensembles with infinite correlation length we formulate the quantum field theory model that, as we show, is exactly integrable and develops an instability of its standard vacuum ensemble (the Dirac sea). We argue such an instability is rooted in high ground state degeneracy (for 'realistic' space-time dimensions) featuring a fairly specific form of energy distribution, and with the cutoff parameter going to infinity this inherent energy distribution becomes infinitely narrow and leads to large (unlimited) fluctuations. Analysing some possible vacuum ensembles such as the Dirac sea, neutral ensemble, color superconducting and BCS states we find out the strong arguments in favor of the BCS state as the ground state of color interacting quark ensemble., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, some corrections, minor improvements, with one new figure and some new references

Analysing two models of four-quark interactions which are of intrinsic difference in the behaviours of their correlation lengths some issues of quark condensations are considered. It is demonstrated that the quark condensates substantially are not sensitive to the details of those interactions in the range of coupling constants interesting for applications., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Studying a model of four-quark interaction with large correlation length we find out both the features peculiar an unitary fermi gas and the specific anomalous properties of the fermi systems with a fermion condensate. It is argued that a possibility of phase transition originated by interface between the Fermi sphere and fermion condensate appears in such quark systems. A (nearly) perfect liquid discovered in the experements with ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated by studying the quark ensembles with four-fermion interection as a fundamental theoretical approach. The comparative analysis of several quantum liquid models is performed and it results in the conclusion that the presence of gas---liquid phase transition is their characteristic feature. The problem of instability of the quark droplets of small quark number is discussed and argued to be rooted in the chiral soliton formation. We study the dynamics of color fields as generated by simple configurations of relativistic particles with Abelian and non-Abelian (SU(2)) charges in the classical limit. We find that chromodynamic (non-Abelian) systems generally show Coulomb-like features by analogy with electrodynamics. A peculiar feature in the non-Abelian case is the additional strength of the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic fields caused by the contribution of changing the color charge. This change of color SU(2) charges results in a rotation of the color vector which is getting very fast at close partonic distances. The presence of this non-Abelian additional term in the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic fields creates a 'color charge glow', which is manifested as a distinct color wave disturbance arising due to the finite distance at which the color interaction becomes active. This situation may be relevant to the hadronization phase in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, where the partonic state is governed by strong local color fluctuations., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures; discussion improved according to referee's remarks, results and conclusions not changed

Many-body interactions in crystalline solids can be conveniently described in terms of quasiparticles with strongly renormalized masses as compared to those of non-interacting particles. Examples of extreme mass renormalization are on the one hand graphene, where the charge carriers obey the linear dispersion relation of massless Dirac fermions, and on the other hand heavy-fermion materials where the effective electron mass approaches the mass of a proton. Here we show that both extremes, Dirac fermions like they are found in graphene and extremely-heavy quasiparticles characteristic for Kondo materials, may not only coexist in a solid but can undergo strong mutual interactions. Using the example of EuRh2Si2 we explicitly demonstrate that these interactions can take place at the surface and in the bulk. The presence of the linear dispersion is imposed solely by the crystal symmetry while the existence of heavy quasiparticles is caused by the localized nature of the 4f states., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, supplemented by theoretical calculations has been applied to study the electronic structure of heavy-fermion material CeFePO, a homologue to the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, and CeFeAs_0.7P_0.3O, where the applied chemical pressure results in a ferromagnetic order of the 4f moments. A comparative analysis reveals characteristic differences in the Fe-derived band structure for these materials, implying a rather different hybridization of valence electrons to the localized 4f orbitals. In particular, our results suggest that the ferromagnetism of Ce moments in CeFeAs_0.7P_0.3O is mediated mainly by Fe 3d_xz/yz orbitals, while the Kondo screening in CeFePO is instead due to a strong interaction of Fe 3d_3z^2-r^2 orbitals., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We present a study of the evolution of magnetism from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2. Single crystals of Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 were grown for 0 < x < 1 and studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements, as well as photoemission spectroscopy. The results evidence a complex magnetic phase diagram, with a non-monotonic evolution of T_N and two successive transitions for some compositions resulting in two tricritical points. The strong similarity with the phase diagram of YbRh2Si2 under pressure indicates that Co substitution basically corresponds to the application of positive chemical pressure. Analysis of the data proves a strong reduction of the Kondo temperature T_K with increasing Co content, T_K becoming smaller than T_N for x ~ 0.5, implying a strong localization of the 4f electrons. Furthermore, low-temperature susceptibility data confirm a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange. The series Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 provides an excellent experimental opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the magnetism at the quantum critical point in the vicinity of YbRh2Si2 where the antiferromagnetic phase disappears (T_N=>0)., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Being homologue to the new, Fe-based type of high-temperature superconductors, CeFePO exhibits magnetism, Kondo and heavy-fermion phenomena. We experimentally studied the electronic structure of CeFePO by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In particular, contributions of the Ce 4f-derived states and their hybridization to the Fe 3d bands were explored using both symmetry selection rules for excitation and their photoionization cross-section variations as a function of photon energy. It was experimentally found - and later on confirmed by LDA as well as DMFT calculations - that the Ce 4f states hybridize to the Fe 3d states of d_{3z^2-r^2} symmetry near the Fermi level that discloses their participation in the occurring electron-correlation phenomena and provides insight into mechanism of superconductivity in oxopnictides., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The two-dimensional mapping of the phonon dispersions around the $K$ point of graphite by inelastic x-ray scattering is provided. The present work resolves the longstanding issue related to the correct assignment of transverse and longitudinal phonon branches at $K$. We observe an almost degeneracy of the three TO, LA and LO derived phonon branches and a strong phonon trigonal warping. Correlation effects renormalize the Kohn anomaly of the TO mode, which exhibits a trigonal warping effect opposite to that of the electronic band structure. We determined the electron--phonon coupling constant to be 166$\rm(eV/\AA)^2$ in excellent agreement to $GW$ calculations. These results are fundamental for understanding angle-resolved photoemission, double--resonance Raman and transport measurements of graphene based systems.

Meson correlation functions are studied in the model with four-fermion interaction Lagrangian. We demonstrate that despite the singular character of system mean energy and corresponding quark condensate found out the meson observables are finite, quite well identified and compatible with experimental energy scale. Electrons in isolated graphene layers are a two-dimensional gas of massless Dirac Fermions. In realistic devices, however, the electronic properties are modified by elastic deformations, interlayer coupling and substrate interaction. Here we unravel the electronic structure of doped graphene, revisiting the stage one graphite intercalation compound KC$_8$ using angle--resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab--initio calculations. The full experimental dispersion is in excellent agreement to calculations of doped graphene once electron correlations are included on the $GW$ level. This highlights that KC$_8$ has negligible interlayer coupling. Therefore Dirac Fermion behaviour is preserved and we directly determine the full experimental Dirac cone of doped graphene. In addition we prove that superconductivity in KC$_8$ is mediated by electron--phonon coupling to an iTO phonon, yielding a strong kink in the quasiparticle dispersion at 166 meV. These results are key for understanding, both, the unique electronic properties of graphene and superconductivity in KC$_8$.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectra of a monolayer of Yb on W(110) reveal energy splittings and dispersion of the Yb 4f states that are obviously due to their hybridization with W-derived valence bands. These effects occur at well defined points of the surface Brillouin zone although a smearing over reciprocal space is expected from the structural incoherence of the Yb and W lattices. We conclude therefore that dispersion is not related to the periodic arrangement of the $4f$ states but reflects the k-dependent interaction of a single Yb 4f impurity with W bands., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We report an application of a simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) algorithm to filtering systematic noise (SN) with non-zero mean value in photoemission data. In our analysis we have used a series of 50 single-scan photoemission spectra of W(110) surface where randomly chosen SN was added. It was found that the SPSA-evaluated spectrum is in good agreement with the spectrum measured without SN. On the basis of our results a wide application of SPSA for evaluation of experimental data is anticipated., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The impact of filling up the Fermi sphere with the quarks, which dynamically generated their masses on the instanton liquid at finite temperature and baryonic/quark number density, is investigated. It is demonstrated, in particular, that the boundary of chiral symmetry restoration phase transition is shifted to the larger (about 100 MeV more) value of quark chemical potential compared to the magnitude inherent in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

The full three dimensional dispersion of the pi-bands, Fermi velocities and effective masses are measured with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and compared to first-principles calculations. The band structure by density-functional theory strongly underestimates the slope of the bands and the trigonal warping effect. Including electron-electron calculation on the level of the GW approximation, however, yields remarkable agreement in the vicinity of the Fermi level. This demonstrates the breakdown of the independent electron picture in semi-metallic graphite and points towards a pronounced role of electron correlation for the interpretation of transport experiments and double-resonant Raman scattering for a wide range of carbon based materials.

Spin- and angle-resolved resonant (Ce $4d\to4f$) photoemission spectra of a monolayer Ce on Fe(110) reveal spin-dependent changes of the Fermi-level peak intensities. That indicate a spin-dependence of $4f$ hybridization and, thus, of $4f$ occupancy and local moment. The phenomenon is described in the framework of the periodic Anderson model by $4f$ electron hopping into the exchange split Fe 3d derived bands that form a spin-gap at the Fermi energy around the $\bar{\Gamma}$ point of the surface Brillouin zone.

Instanton liquid in heated and strongly interacting matter is studied using the variational principle. The dependence of the instanton liquid density (gluon condensate) on the temperature and the quark chemical potential is determined under the assumption that, at finite temperatures, the dominant contribution is given by an ensemble of calorons. The thermal and quark/baryon chemical potential dependences of quark condensate and masses of $\pi$- and $\sigma$-mesons are studied in the instanton model of the QCD vacuum in precritical region. The origin of the lightest scalar mesons is studied in the framework of instanton liquid model (ILM) of the QCD vacuum. The impact of vacuum excitations on the sigma-meson features is analyzed in detail. In particular, it is noticed that the changes produced in the scalar sector may unexpectedly become quite considerable in spite of insignificant values of corrections to the dynamical quark masses and then the medley of sigma-meson and those excitations may reveal itself as broad resonance states of vitally different masses., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX

The effect of external colour field impact on the instanton liquid is studied. In the course of this study the corresponding effective Lagrangians are derived for both regimes of weak and strong external field and in long wave-length approximation. Strong angle-dependent intensity variations of the Fermi-level feature are observed in 4d - 4f resonant photoemission spectra of CePd$_3$(111), that reveal the periodicity of the lattice and largest intensity close to the Gamma points of the surface Brillouin zone. In the framework of a simplified periodic Anderson model the phenomena may quantitatively be described by a wave-vector dependence of the electron hopping matrix elements caused by Fermi-level crossings of non-4f-derived energy bands.

The electronic structure and selected zone-center phonons in Yb graphite intercalation compound (YbC6) are investigated {theoretically} using density functional calculations and LDA+U approximation for Coulomb correlations in the f shell, and experimentally using angle-resolved photoemission. We find that both in LDA and LDA+U approach the Yb f states are fully occupied providing no evidence for mixed-valent behavior. The obtained theoretical results are in good agreement with photoemission experiments. The 4f states are considerably hybridized both with the Yb 5d and C 2p states resulting in a substantial admixture of Yb f at the Fermi level. Soft Yb phonons, given a noticeable presence of the Yb states at the Fermi level, are probably responsible for the superconductivity recently reported in YbC6., Comment: For consistency, we post without any changes the manuscript as submitted to PRB on 3/17/2005; however, in meanwhile the key Ref.6 has been made available by the authors as cond-mat/0503570 and will be referred to as such in the future versions

{(Anti-)instanton behaviour in Euclidean non-abelian field of the point-like source is studied by analyzing the possible (anti-)instanton deformations as resulted from the variations of its characteristic parameters. The variational principle for searching such crumpled topological configurations is formulated and the problem is resolved then algebraically by the Ritz method (multipole expansion of the deformation fields). The region of (anti-)instanton parameters relevant to the instanton liquid model is investigated in detail. The approximate efficacious method to include such configurations contributing to the appropriate partition function is proposed and verified. Evaluating average energy of Euclidean non-abelian point-like source in the instanton environment (liquid) is performed within the superposition ansatz for the corresponding solutions of the Yang-Mills equations. For the colour singlet dipole this energy escalates linearly with the separation increasing and its tension coefficient develops the magnitude commensurate with that as inferred from lattice QCD., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures

Estimate of average energy of the non-abelian dipole in the instanton medium is calculated. This energy for the dipole in colour singlet state escalates linearly with the separation increasing for the point-like sources unscreened. And its 'tension' coefficient develops the magnitude pretty similar to one as inferred from the lattice QCD and other model approaches.

An appraisal of average energy of Euclidean non-abelian point-like source in the instanton liquid is calculated. It behaves linearly increasing at large distances while unscreened. For the dipole in colour singlet state this energy increases linearly again with the separation increasing and its "tension" coefficient develops the magnitude pretty similar to the lattice approach and other model estimates. The situation of sources arbitrary oriented in colour space is perturbatively considered., Comment: 8 pages

Angle-resolved photoemission (PE) was used to characterize the spin-density wave (SDW) state in thin films of Cr grown on W(110). The PE data were analysed using results of local spin density approximation layer-Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker calculations. It is shown that the incommensurate SDW can be monitored and important parameters of SDW-related interactions, such as coupling strength and energy of collective magnetic excitations, can be determined from the dispersion of the renormalized electronic bands close to the Fermi energy. The developed approach can readily be applied to other SDW systems including magnetic multilayer structures., Comment: 4 figures

The interaction of light quarks and instanton liquid is analyzed at finite density of quark/baryon matter and in the phase of nonzero values of diquark (colour) condensate. It is shown that instanton liquid perturbation produced by such an interaction results in an essential increase of the critical value of quark chemical potential $\mu_c$ which provokes the perceptible increase of quark matter density around the expected onset of the colour superconductivity phase., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study light quark interactions in the instanton liquid at finite quark/baryon number density analyzing chiral and diquark condensates and investigate the behaviors of quark dynamical mass and both condensates together with instanton liquid density as a function of quark chemical potential. We conclude the quark impact (estimated in the tadpole approximation) on the instanton liquid could shift color superconducting phase transition to higher values of the chemical potential bringing critical quark matter density to the values essentially higher than conventional nuclear one., Comment: Lattice 2001 (Non-zero temperature and density), 3 pages, 4 figures

We develop the theory of fermion induced phononlike excitations of the instanton liquid. It suggests a mechanism of current quark mass generation which is easily understandable by calculating the corresponding functional integral in the tadpole approximation. We systematically study the quark condensate excitations influenced by the phononlike modes and rederive the relation Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner with realistic pion mass. The picture of $\sigma$-meson as being mixed with the soft scalar glueball-like excitation is discussed., Comment: 21 pages

The selfconsistent approach to the quark interactions in the instanton liquid is developed within the tadpole approximation calculating the basic functional integral. The effective Lagrangian obtained includes colourless scalar field interacting with quarks.
